Abstract Existing facial expression recognition (FER) methods are mainly devoted to learning discriminative features from normal-light images. However, their performance drops sharply when they are used for low-light images. In this paper, we propose a novel low-light FER framework (termed LL-FER) that can simultaneously enhance the images and recognition tasks of low-light facial expression images. Specifically, we first meticulously design a low-light enhancement network (LLENet) to recover expressions images’ rich detail information. Then, we design a joint loss to train the LLENet with FER network in a cascade manner, so that the FER network can guide the LLENet to gradually perceive and restore discriminative features which are useful for FER during the training process. Extensive experiments show that the LLENet not only achieves competitive results both quantitatively and qualitatively, but also in the LL-FER framework, which can produce results more suitable for FER tasks, further improving the performance of the FER methods.

AiiA can be targeted to quench N-acyl-homoserine lactones (AHLs) quorum sensing signaling molecules. In this paper, we extracted and purified AiiA protein by constructing recombinant engineering bacteria to analyze the effect of AiiA on the formation of Vibrio parahaemolyticus biofilm. The results suggest that AiiA has a particular potential in inhibiting the formation of biofilms and extracellular polymers. The ability of AiiA to inhibit biofilm increased and then decreased, with the lowest biofilm decomposition concentration of 8 μg/mL and the optimal inhibitor concentration of 85 μg/mL (86.9% biofilm inhibition). LC-MS results showed that when the concentration of C4-HSL in Vibrio parahaemolyticus ATCC33847 biofilm exceeded 3.70 μg/L, the content of quorum sensing signaling molecules reached a threshold and began to activate LuxR protein to regulate the expression of related genes. These results provide relevant experimental guidance for the clinical treatment of biofilm infections and the development of novel QS inhibitors.

Microbial infection can pose a great threat to health of farmed fish. This study aimed to investigate the probiotic characteristics of Bacillus cereus strain fkW8-1-2 isolated from intestine of WCC and its anti-biofilm activity against pathogenic bacteria. The strain fkW8-1-2 showed a high resistance to low pH, bile salt and lysozyme during long-term incubation. The strain fkW8-1-2 displayed a gradual increase of cell surface hydrophobicity with various forms of hydrocarbons. The strain fkW8-1-2 showed the remarkable autoaggregation and coaggregation activity with A. hydrophila L3-3 and E. tarda 1l-4. The culture medium (CM) and cell-free supernatants (CFS) of strain fkW8-1-2 at 48 h cultivation could attenuate biofilm formation of A. hydrophila and E. tarda with the maximum inhibition rates. In addition, the intact cells of strain fkW8-1-2 exhibited the strong antioxidant activity for DPPH removal and superoxide anion clearance. These results indicated that strain fkW8-1-2 possessing probiotic characteristics can pose a protective role in health of farmed fish.

Background: To explore the role of vaginal microbiota and metabolomics in the progression of cervical dysplasia. Methods: The patient group consists of female patients with low-grade, high-grade cervical dysplasia, and cervical cancer. Normal cervix samples from health volunteers were used as controls. The metabolic fingerprints of cervicovaginal lavage were analyzed using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, while the vaginal microbiota was examined through 16S rRNA sequencing. Bioinformatic analysis was adopted to investigate the interplay between hosts and microbes. The vaginal metabolic and microbiota profiles of 90 female patients with cervical dysplasia and 10 controls were analyzed to discover the biological characteristics underlying the progression of cervical cancer. Results: We found that Valyl-Glutamate, N, N′-Diacetylbenzidine, and Oxidized glutathione, which were involved in oxidative stress response, were discriminators to distinguish the normal cervix, invasive cervical carcinomas, and CIN3 from others. Cervical carcinoma was characterized by a large variety of vaginal microbes (dominated by non-Lactobacillus communities) compared to the control. These microbes affected amino acid and nucleotide metabolism, producing metabolites with cervical carcinoma and genital inflammation compared to the control group. Conclusions: This study revealed that cervicovaginal metabolic profiles were determined by cervical cancer, vaginal microbiota, and their interplays. ROS metabolism can be used to discriminate normal cervix, CIN3, and invasive cervical carcinoma.

Abstract Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) is extremely hepatotoxic, a causative agent of liver cancer, and can cause symptoms of acute or chronic liver damage. Chito-oligosaccharides (COS), obtained from the degradation of chitosan derived from shrimp and crab shells, is a natural antioxidant substance and its antitumor properties have been widely studied, but less research has been done on the prevention of AFB1-induced acute liver injury. In this study, rats were acutely exposed to 1 mg/kg BW AFB1 and simultaneously gavaged with different doses of COS for 8 days. The results showed that COS attenuated the hepatic histopathological changes and reduced serum biochemical indices (ALT, AST, ALP, and TBIL) in rats. It significantly inhibited MDA content and promoted SOD and GSH-Px activity production. Moreover, it also improved hepatocyte apoptosis. Furthermore, AFB1-vs-HCOS differential genes were enriched with 622 GO entries, and 380 were Biological Processes, 170 were Molecular Functions, 72 were Cellular Components. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) analyzed by KEGG enrichment were more enriched in pathways, such as metabolism, PPAR signaling pathway, and peroxisome. Q-PCR technique verified that Lama5, Egr1, Cyp2b1, and Gadd45g in DEGs were associated with oxidative stress damage and apoptosis. In conclusion, COS intervention reduces the effect of AFB1 on hepatic genes and thus reduces the changes in hepatic gene function. Graphical abstract

The excessive use of chemical fertilizers in the Guanxi honey pomelo production area has led to severe soil acidification and magnesium (Mg) deficiency, adversely affecting pomelo fruit quality. To address this issue, an integrated nutrient optimization model crucial for ensuring the sustainable and environmentally friendly development of the Guanxi honey pomelo industry has been explored. In a three-year experiment, two fertilizer treatments were implemented: a farmer fertilizer practice (FP) and an NPK reduction plus foliar Mg fertilizer (OPT + fMg). We investigated the impact of this integrated optimized fertilization measure on pomelo fruit quality from three aspects: flavor (sugars and organic acids), nutrition (vitamin C and mineral elements), and antioxidant properties (phenolics, flavonoids, and phytic acid). The results revealed that the OPT + fMg treatment improved fruit flavor by reducing acidity (titratable acid, citric acid, and quinine), while having a minimal impact on sugar components (sucrose, fructose, and glucose). Additionally, the OPT + fMg treatment increased the total phenolics, total flavonoids, and phytic acid in the fruit peel, enhancing its potential antioxidant quality. However, the OPT + fMg treatment reduced the mineral nutrient quality (excluding calcium) in the fruit. As for the fruit developmental period, the OPT + fMg treatment significantly increased the total flavonoid concentration in the peel from the mid-expansion fruit stage, followed by notable increases in phytic acid in the peel during the mid-to-late expansion fruit stage. The total phenolic concentration in the peel significantly rose only during the late fruit development stage. The most pronounced effect was observed on phytic acid in both peel and pulp. The influence of the OPT + fMg treatment on the mineral nutrients (excluding calcium) primarily occurred during the mid-to-late expansion fruit stage. Overall, the OPT + fMg treatment significantly improved the comprehensive nutritional quality of pomelo fruit, providing valuable insights for scientifically reducing fertilizer application while enhancing fruit quality.

TNFα belongs to superfamily of tumor necrosis factor that can exert the pleiotropic effort in a large quantity of biological processes, including immune homeostasis, intracellular modulation and etiopathogenesis, but its regulatory role in mucosal immune regulation of fish is unclear. Currently, this study aimed to evaluate the immunoregulatory function of TNFα1 on gut barrier in teleost fish. In this study, TNFα1 sequences were identified from red crucian carp (RCC, Carassius auratus red var). The high-level expression of RCC-TNFα1 mRNA was detected in gill among all the isolated samples. Then, RCC-TNFα1 expression increased dramatically in immune-related tissues after A. hydrophila infection and in cultured fish cells after lipopolysaccharide (LPS) treatment. RCC-TNFα1 fusion protein was generated and purified in vitro. RCC receiving RCC-TNFα1 perfusion showed an increased levels of villi fusion and edema in injured midgut with the fuzzy appearance. With the cutting-edge advancements in computer vision, facial expression recognition (FER) is an active research area due to its broad practical applications. It has been utilized in various fields, including education, advertising and marketing, entertainment and gaming, health, and transportation. The facial expression recognition-based systems are rapidly evolving due to new challenges, and significant research studies have been conducted on both basic and compound facial expressions of emotions; however, measuring emotions is challenging. Fueled by the recent advancements and challenges to the FER systems, in this article, we have discussed the basics of FER and architectural elements, FER applications and use-cases, FER-based global leading companies, interconnection between FER, Internet of Things (IoT) and Cloud computing, summarize open challenges in-depth to FER technologies, and future directions through utilizing Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta Analyses Method (PRISMA). In the end, the conclusion and future thoughts are discussed. By overcoming the identified challenges and future directions in this research study, researchers will revolutionize the discipline of facial expression recognition in the future.

MnSOD is a ubiquitous metalloenzyme that constitutes the first line of antioxidant defense against oxidative stress. In this study, full length sequence of MnSOD was identified from hybrid crucian carp (WR, Carassius cuvieri ♀ × Carassius auratus red var ♂). Tissue-specific analysis revealed that the highest expression of WR-MnSOD was detected in kidney. Aeromonas hydrophila challenge could dramatically enhance WR-MnSOD mRNA expression in tissues. In vivo administration of purified WR-MnSOD peptide could maintain gut mucosal barrier function, rescue redox balance as well as decrease apoptotic cell death in midgut upon bacterial infection, suggesting that WR-MnSOD is playing a crucial role in gut mucosal barrier function and could be used as feed additive to improve gut immunity in fish.

In order to explore the adsorption characteristics and influencing factors of bongkrekic acid by Lactobacillus plantarum X1. High performance liquid chromatography was used to determine the adsorption rate of bongkrekic acid. Factors that affect the ability of the strain to remove bongkrekic acid included time, temperature, pH, bacterial concentration, bongkrekic acid concentration and simulated gastrointestinal environment. Thermodynamic and kinetic equations were used to fit the analysis results. Results showed that the strain adsorbed bongkrekic acid quickly and efficiently and the adsorption reached saturation at 1 h. The increase of temperature, bacterial concentration and bongkrekic acid concentration enhanced the adsorption and desorption was difficult after adsorption. The optimum adsorption conditions were the temperature of 37 ℃, bacterial concentration of 6 g·L−1 and bongkrekic acid concentration of 10 mg·L−1, the adsorption rates were 52.70%, 54.12% and 48.53%, respectively. Acidic environment was favorable for BA adsorption, but the adsorption effect in simulated gastrointestinal environment was reduced due to the action of protease. The adsorption capacity reached the maximum at pH3. The adsorption process conformed to Langmuir equation and Lagergren pseudo-second order equation, and it was monolayer adsorption. The thermodynamic data were analyzed and it was found that both physical adsorption and chemical adsorption existed in the adsorption process. The whole process was spontaneous and exothermic. Therefore, Lactobacillus plantarum X1 should be potential candidates as a biological detoxification agent for the remove of bongkrekic acid via their physical binding.

Obesity is regarded to be correlated with disorders of lipid metabolism, bile acid metabolism and dysbiosis of the gut microbiota. Moringa-Fu brick tea (MFBT), a functional food, has a significant anti-obesity effect. However, the effectiveness and mechanisms of MFBT in preventing obesity require further investigation. Here, our results show that moringa-Fu brick tea extract (MFTE) displays anti-obesity effects by reducing high-fat diet-induced weight gain and adipose tissue accumulation in rats, and attenuating visceral adiposity index, oxidative stress and inflammation. In addition, MFTE could regulate gut microbiota diversity, reduce the relative abundance of microbioa associated with bile salt hydrolase (BSH) activity, such as Blautia, Ruminococcaceae, Coprococcus and Roseburia. Moreover, MFTE could improve the expression of the main rate-limiting enzymes CYP7A1 and CYP27A1 in the process of bile acid synthesis, downregulate the expression of intestinal FXR protein, promote the serum bile acid level, and reduce the accumulation of cholesterol in serum and liver. Taken together, these results suggested that MFBT could serve as a functional food for prevention of obesity and hyperlipidemia in association with regulating bile acid metabolism and gut microbiota.

Boreal and temperate forests, spanning cold mid- to high-latitude environments and encompassing about 43% of the global forest area, are highly vulnerable to warming. Understanding the response of soil carbon (C) dynamics in these forests to warming is of paramount importance, yet significant uncertainty remains. In this meta-analysis, data from 97 studies across 65 sites were synthesized to investigate the effects of warming on soil C inputs, pools, and outputs in boreal and temperate forests. Our results reveal that warming increased aboveground biomass (by 33%) and litterfall (by 15%), while decreasing litter mass remaining (by 7%), with no significant change observed in fine root biomass. Furthermore, warming led to a 9% increase in soil total respiration and a 15% increase in autotrophic respiration, yet had no discernible impact on soil organic carbon (SOC) content. The methods, magnitude, and duration of warming were found to regulate the responses of soil C dynamics. Buried heater warming elicited the most pronounced effects among warming methods. Additionally, soil total respiration exhibited an acclimation response to warming magnitude and duration, while litter decomposition rates increased and SOC content and microbial biomass C decreased with escalating warming magnitude. Moreover, greater soil respiration response occurred in temperate forests than in boreal forests. These findings underscore the nuanced and context-dependent nature of soil C dynamics in response to experimental warming, providing critical insights for understanding the role of boreal and temperate forests in future climate change mitigation strategies.

Vibrio parahaemolyticus biofilm poses a serious threat to food safety and human health. However, there is limited knowledge of transcriptional regulatory mechanism during the biofilm formation of this organism. Hence, the RNA sequencing technique was employed to compare the differences in transcriptome profiles between planktonic and biofilm state of V. parahaemolyticus ATCC33847 in this study. Collections of mRNA from planktonic and biofilm cells cultured at 25°C for 36 h were sequenced by studying their biological characteristics. The results showed that there were significant differences in the expression levels of 956 genes in biofilms compared with planktonic cells. These differences suggested that two-component regulatory system (TCS) and quorum sensing (QS) regulated V. parahaemolyticus biofilm formation by affecting important factors such as flagellar motility, Extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) secretion, tripartite ATP-independent (TRAP) transport system and ATP binding cassette (ABC) transport system. The present work in transcriptomics serves as a basis for future studies examining the complex network systems that regulate bacterial biofilm formation.

Abstract Background Uterine artery embolization (UAE) followed by suction and curettage is a common conservative treatment for caesarean scar pregnancy (CSP), but the advantages of suction and curettage alone are underestimated due to the lack of standards for selecting appropriate cases for which this approach would be applicable. We sought to identify indicators with which to assess the need for UAE during suction and curettage. Methods The prospective cohort consisted of 105 women diagnosed with CSP in Peking Union Medical College Hospital between January 2016 and September 2018 who were followed up until 60 days after surgery. Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) has mutagenesis, carcinogenesis and teratogenesis effects and mainly found in food crops and their processed foods. AFB1 exposure can cause acute or chronic liver poisoning, but there were few studies on the persistent effects of acute AFB1 exposure on the liver. In this study, rat liver injury models were established 2 and 7 days after single exposure to high and low doses of AFB1. The persistent effects of AFB1 single acute exposure (ASAE) on rat liver were analyzed from the phenotypic and genetic levels. The results showed that compared with the control group, liver function indexes, MDA content in liver and the number of apoptotic hepatocytes in model groups increased to the highest on the 2nd day after ASAE (p < 0.001). However, the changes of liver coefficient were most significant on the 7th day after ASAE (p < 0.01). The results of liver pathology showed that the liver injury was not alleviated and the activities of antioxidant enzymes GSH-Px and SOD were the lowest on the 7th day (p < 0.001). RNA-Seq results indicated that there were 236, 33, 679, and 78 significantly differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in the model groups (LA-2d, LA-7d, HA-2d, HA-7d) compared with the control group. Among them, the Gtse1 gene related to the proliferation, differentiation and metastasis of liver cancer cells, the Lama5 and Fabp4 gene related to the inflammatory response were significantly DEGs in the four model groups, and the differential expression of the immune system-related Bcl6 gene increased with the prolonged observation time after ASAE. In conclusion, ASAE can cause persistent liver damage in rats. The persistently affected genes Lama5, Gtse1, Fabp4, and Bcl6 possess the potential to be therapeutic targets for liver disease induced by AFB1.

This study was conducted to analyze the effects of sodium nitrite, nisin, potassium sorbate, and sodium lactate against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) growth and staphylococcal enterotoxins (SEs) production in cooked pork sausage by inoculating sausage samples containing preservative with an S. aureus strain producing staphylococcal enterotoxin A (SEA) and then storing them at 37 °C for 36 h. Samples were analyzed every 3 h to count the S. aureus colonies and to detect SEA. The modified Gompertz model was used to describe S. aureus growth in the samples under various conditions, and the preservatives with a significant antimicrobial effect were selected. In addition, the antimicrobial effects of the selected preservatives under various concentrations were tested. Results showed that sodium nitrite, nisin, and potassium sorbate had a weak effect against S. aureus growth and had no effect against SEA production, whereas sodium lactate could significantly inhibit S. aureus growth and SEA production. Background: Early embryonic developmental arrest is the most commonly understudied adverse outcome of pregnancy. The relevance of intrauterine infection to spontaneous embryonic death is rarely studied and remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between intrauterine bacterial infection and early embryonic developmental arrest. Methods: Embryonic chorion tissue and uterine swabs for bacterial detection were obtained from 33 patients who underwent artificial abortion (control group) and from 45 patients who displayed early embryonic developmental arrest (trial group). Results: Intrauterine bacterial infection was discovered in both groups. The infection rate was 24.44% (11/45) in the early embryonic developmental arrest group and 9.09% (3/33) in the artificial abortion group. Classification analysis revealed that the highest detection rate for Micrococcus luteus in the early embryonic developmental arrest group was 13.33% (6/45), and none was detected in the artificial abortion group. M. luteus infection was significantly different between the groups (P < 0.05 as shown by Fisher's exact test). In addition, no correlation was found between intrauterine bacterial infection and history of early embryonic developmental arrest. Conclusions: M. luteus infection is related to early embryonic developmental arrest and might be one of its causative factors.

Post-surgical pain is commonly experienced by patients, and traditional pain medication has limitations and side effects. Virtual reality (VR) is a computer-generated technology that simulates realistic environments, which distracts the patient's attention and emotions, reduces pain, and improves rehabilitation by creating an immersive experience. The increasing affordability and quality of portable VR headsets, as well as the increasing utility of pain management, bode well for the exciting future of using VR for analgesia. VR was found to be effective as a complementary adjunct or alternative nonpharmacological analgesic to a range of acute and chronic pain treatments. The application of VR to post-surgical pain management can significantly reduce patients' dependence on medications, as well as decrease the intensity and duration of pain. Abstract Objective The objective of this study was to investigate the efficacy and safety of tranexamic acid (TXA) in hepatectomy when administered as per the standardized protocol of controlled low central venous pressure (CLCVP). Methods This study was a randomized, double-blind, controlled study. Patients who fulfilled the inclusion criteria were randomly assigned to the TXA group (group T) or the placebo group (group N). The central venous pressure (CVP) was maintained at below 5 cmH2O before complete dissection of the liver parenchyma. Patients in group T received an intravenous infusion of 10 mg/kg of TXA 30 min before surgery, and it was continuously pumped intravenously at a rate of 1 mg/(kg.h) until the end of surgery. Patients in group N were infused with 1 mL/kg of normal saline 30 min before surgery, and it was continuously pumped intravenously at a rate of 0.1 mL/(kg.h) until the end of surgery. The primary outcome indicators were intraoperative blood loss, blood transfusion rate, intraperitoneal drainage at 24 h after surgery, and the occurrence of compound bleeding within 30 days. Results The baseline indicators were similar (P > 0.05), and there was no significant difference in intraoperative blood loss between the two groups, but the red blood cell transfusion rate was lower in the T group than in the N group (P 0.05).
