Abstract Background Influenza is a major cause of morbidity and mortality. Influenza A virus (IAV) is one of the most important pathogens causing influenza and often causes global pandemics due to its tendency to mutate. We aim to use epidemiology based on wastewater and respiratory specimens to understand the occurrence of influenza A virus infections in Taiyuan City. Methods A retrospective epidemiology surveillance was carried out at the First Hospital of Shanxi Medical University (FHSMU) and five wastewater treatment plants (WTPs) in Taiyuan city from 2023 to 2024. Reverse transcription real-time fluorescence quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) was used to detect influenza A viruses in wastewater and respiratory specimens. High-throughput whole genome sequencing was performed on 17 strains obtained in this study, and subsequent analyses included characterization, phylogenetic construction, amino acid mutation analysis, and antigenic structural variability assessment. Results 520 wastewater samples and 1,203 throat swab samples were collected. We detected RNA concentration from pH1N1 and H3N2 viruses in wastewater and got 17 genome sequences (5 of pH1N1 and 12 of H3N2) in respiratory specimens. Whole-genome sequencing showed co-prevalence of pH1N1 viruses in the branches of 6B.1 A.5a.2a.1 and H3N2 viruses in the branches of 3 C.2a1b.2a.2a.3a.a in Taiyuan from 2023 to 2024. Moreover, a HA mutation (N138D), predicted to be of high phenotypic consequence, was found in 8 Taiyuan H3N2 sequences. Conclusion This study highlights the predominant presence of pH1N1 and H3N2 strains in Taiyuan. The analysis also identified amino acid site variations in the HA antigenic epitopes in H3N2 strains, which may contribute to immune escape.

Abstract Adverse perinatal factors can interfere with the normal development of the brain, potentially resulting in long-term effects on the comprehensive development of children. Presently, the understanding of cognitive and neurodevelopmental processes under conditions of adverse perinatal factors is substantially limited. There is a critical need for an open resource that integrates various perinatal factors with the development of the brain and mental health to facilitate a deeper understanding of these developmental trajectories. In this Data Descriptor, we introduce a multicenter database containing information on perinatal factors that can potentially influence children’s brain-mind development, namely, periCBD, that combines neuroimaging and behavioural phenotypes with perinatal factors at county/region/central district hospitals. PeriCBD was designed to establish a platform for the investigation of individual differences in brain-mind development associated with perinatal factors among children aged 3–10 years. Ultimately, our goal is to help understand how different adverse perinatal factors specifically impact cognitive development and neurodevelopment. Herein, we provide a systematic overview of the data acquisition/cleaning/quality control/sharing, processes of periCBD.

Summary: Background: Whether hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection of women prior to pregnancy can influence risk of congenital malformations in offspring remains controversial. We assessed the association between them by considering congenital malformations in the aggregate as well as risk of organs systems using a large national sample of Chinese women. Methods: We performed a record-linkage cohort study of women who participated in National Free Preconception Health Examination Project, between January 1, 2010, and December 31, 2019 for whom data on congenital malformations in their offspring were available from the National Population-Based Birth Defects Surveillance Network. A total of 498,968 linked records were obtained, of which 127,371 were excluded because HBV status before pregnancy was unknown, the records involved multiple pregnancies, or pre-pregnancy examinations were conducted after conception. Based on pre-pregnancy status, mothers were assigned to two categories of HBsAg− or HBsAg+ and, in certain analyses, to three categories of HBsAg−, HBsAg+/HBeAg− or HBsAg+/HBeAg+. Potential associations of serological status with risk of congenital malformations, considered separately or in aggregate, were explored using multilevel logistic regression. Factors that might influence such associations were also explored. Findings: Among the 371,597 women analyzed, 21,482 (5.78%) were HBsAg+ before pregnancy, and 8333 (2.24%) had a fetus or child diagnosed with congenital malformations, composed of 7744 HBsAg− women and 589 HBsAg+ women. HBsAg+ status was associated with increased risk of congenital malformations in the aggregate (OR 1.14, 95% CI 1.03–1.25) and of cardiovascular malformations specifically (OR 1.18, 95% CI 1.03–1.35). HBsAg+/HBeAg− status was associated with significantly higher risk of cardiovascular malformations (OR 1.19, 95% CI 1.01–1.39) as well as reproductive malformations (OR 1.51, 95% CI 1.02–2.23). Associations between HBsAg+ status before pregnancy and risk of congenital malformations was modified by alanine aminotransferase activity (Pinteraction < 0.05). Interpretation: Prepregnancy HBV infection might be associated with fetal malformations. This association needs further investigation to confirm whether it is a causal association, and assess whether antiviral therapy of women with HBsAg+ planning to conceive might reduce the risk of fetal malformations. Abstract Objective Recent studies have found a high prevalence of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection in patients with non‐Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL), especially B‐cell non‐Hodgkin's lymphoma (B‐NHL). However, most studies did not classify it and analyze the correlation between HBV and its various subtypes. Methods The authors retrospectively analyzed 1424 patients with lymphoma. Differences in the prevalence of HBV infection in patients with different pathological types of lymphoma were analyzed. The clinical characteristics, progression‐free survival (PFS), and overall survival (OS) of HBV‐positive and negative B‐NHL subtypes were compared according to HBV infection. Objective: The purpose of this study is to investigate the correlation between elevated levels of CCAAT/enhancer-binding protein beta (CEBPB) gene expression and unfavorable outcomes in diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL). The goal is to elucidate potential therapeutic targets associated with this relationship. Methods: Differential expression and survival analyses were conducted using data from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database. The functions of CEBPB in DLBCL cells were investigated through cell culture, RNA extraction, quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR), and Western blot. In addition, a weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) was performed to pinpoint gene modules associated with CEBPB. Furthermore, experimental validation was carried out to explore the interaction between CEBPB and interleukin 1 beta (IL1B). Results: High levels of CEBPB expression are prominently observed in DLBCL, with its overabundance significantly linked to the diagnosis of DLBCL. Survival analysis reveals that patients exhibiting elevated CEBPB expression tend to experience a poorer prognosis. Further validation confirmed CEBPB's role in promoting DLBCL cell proliferation and cell cycle progression. WGCNA identified CEBPB-related gene modules, with IL1B identified as a potential regulatory gene of CEBPB. The presence of high levels of IL1B has been correlated with an unfavorable prognosis in individuals diagnosed with DLBCL. Experiments demonstrate that IL1B promotes DLBCL cell proliferation through CEBPB. Conclusions: This study reveals the significant roles of CEBPB and IL1B in DLBCL, providing new theoretical foundations and potential molecular targets for the treatment and prognosis of DLBCL.

The HIV-1 pandemic, spanning four decades, presents a significant challenge to global public health. This study aimed to understand the molecular transmission characteristics of newly reported HIV infections in Taiyuan, Shanxi Province, China, to analyze the characteristics of subtypes and the risk factors of the transmission network, providing a scientific basis for precise prevention and intervention measures. A total of 720 samples were collected from newly diagnosed HIV-1 patients residing in Taiyuan between 2021 and 2023. Sequencing of partial genes of the HIV-1 pol gene resulted in multiple sequence acquisitions and was conducted to analyze their subtypes and molecular transmission networks. Out of the samples, 584 pol sequences were obtained, revealing 17 HIV-1 subtypes, with CRF07_BC (48.29%), CRF01_AE (31.34%), and CRF79_0107 (7.19%) being the dominant subtypes. Using a genetic distance threshold of 1.5%, 49 molecular transmission clusters were generated from the 313 pol gene sequences. Univariate analysis showed significant differences in the HIV transmission molecular network in terms of HIV subtype and household registration (p < 0.05). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that CRF79_0107 subtype and its migrants were associated with higher proportions of sequences in the HIV transmission network. These findings provide a scientific foundation for the development of localized HIV-specific intervention strategies.

ABSTRACT Human adenovirus (HAdV) is the primary cause of acute conjunctivitis. To improve our understanding of the etiology of adenoviral conjunctivitis, ocular samples were collected from 160 conjunctivitis cases in the Shanxi province of northern China between 2016 and 2019. Through preliminary identification, virus isolation, and type identification, a total of 63 HAdV isolates were obtained from the samples. Three species and seven types (HAdV-3, HAdV-4, HAdV-8, HAdV-37, HAdV-53, HAdV-64, and HAdV-85) were detected, with HAdV-64, HAdV-3, and HAdV-8 being the predominant types in 2016, 2018, and 2019, respectively. Further phylogenetic analysis indicated the relative genomic stability of seven HAdV-type strains, except for 4 HAdV-3 strains in 2018 with a novel amino acid insertion site (Pro) between P19 and S20 in the penton base gene. It is worth noting that the genomes of two Shanxi HAdV-85 strains from 2016 were almost identical to those of previously reported HAdV-85 strains that circulated in Japan in 2014 to 2018. China was the second country to sample and isolate HAdV-85, suggesting that HAdV-85 might be underreported as an ocular pathogen. Data obtained in this study provide valuable information on the prevalence of acute conjunctivitis caused by HAdV. IMPORTANCE HAdV types in cases of conjunctivitis in Shanxi province, China, in 2016 to 2019 showed evident diversity, with seven types (HAdV-3, HAdV-4, HAdV-8, HAdV-37, HAdV-53, HAdV-64, and HAdV-85) being identified, and relative genome stability of these viruses was observed. In addition, China was the second country to sample and isolate HAdV-85, which suggests that HAdV-85 might be underreported as an important pathogen associated with ocular infections. These results enhance the understanding of the etiology of adenoviral conjunctivitis and may aid in the development of prevention and control strategies for HAdV-related ocular infections in China.

Plain language summary Preterm birth (PTB) is the leading cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality, as well as other system immaturity problem. But as one of important environmental tobacco smoking sources of maternal secondhand smoking in the family, paternal smoking is worthy for deep exploring of its potential impacts on PTB. Moreover, evidence on the independent role of preconception paternal smoking is still lacking. Thus, we conducted a population-based retrospective cohort study to evaluate the association between paternal smoking and risk of PTB among among 5,298,043 reproductive-aged couples who participated in the National Free Pre-Pregnancy Checkups Project (NFPCP), regarding outcome events that occurred in 2010–2016. We found a significant association between paternal smoking and PTB. Smoking reduction should not only be advised to pregnant women but also to their partners to reduce PTB in their fetal. In addition, supporting patients to continue smoking reduction will be crucial when considering the adverse health outcome of smoking. Intervention of tobacco use before and during pregnancy, are critical for prevention of PTB. Avoiding both maternal and paternal smoking during pregnancy will benefit the developing fetus.

Hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) is a common childhood infectious disease caused by human enteroviruses (EV). This study aimed to describe the epidemiological features of HFMD and the genetic characteristics of Coxsackievirus A16 (CVA16) in Taiyuan, Shanxi, China, from 2010 to 2021. Descriptive epidemiological methods were used to analyze the time and population distribution of HFMD and the genetic characteristics of CVA16. Except being affected by the COVID-19 epidemic in 2020, HFMD epidemics were sporadic from January to March each year, and began to increase in April, with a major epidemic peak from May to August, which declined in September, followed by a secondary peak from October to December. The prevalence of EV infection was the highest in children aged one to five years (84.42%), whereas its incidence was very low in children under one year of age (5.48%). Enterovirus nucleic acid was detected by real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction in 6641 clinical specimens collected from patients with HFMD from 2010 to 2021, and 4236 EV-positive specimens were detected, including 988 enterovirus A71 (EV-A71), 1488 CVA16, and 1760 other enteroviruses. CVA16 remains prevalent and has co-circulated with other EVs in Taiyuan from 2010 to 2021. A phylogenetic tree constructed based on the VP1 region showed that all CVA16 strains belonged to two different clades of the B1 genotype, B1a and B1b. They showed a nucleotide similarity of 86.5–100%, and an amino acid similarity of 96.9–100%. Overall, these findings add to the global genetic resources of CVA16, demonstrate the epidemiological characteristics of HFMD as well as the genetic features of CVA16 in Taiyuan City during 2010–2021, and provide supporting evidence for the prevention and control of HFMD.

Real-time online identification of spacecraft segment damage is of great significance for realizing spacecraft structural health monitoring and life prediction. In this paper, a damage response characteristic field inversion algorithm based on the differential reconstruction of strain response is proposed to solve the problem of not being able to recognize the small damages of spacecraft structure directly by the strain response alone. Four crack damage location identification methods based on vector norm computation are proposed, which realize online identification and precise location of structural damage events without external excitation by means of spacecraft structural working loads only. A spacecraft segment structural damage monitoring system based on fiber optic grating sensors was constructed, and the average error of damage localization based on the curvature vector 2 norm calculation was 2.58 mm, and the root-mean-square error was 1.98 mm. The results show that the method has superior engineering applicability for on-orbit service environments.

To determine the epidemiological status of influenza and understand the distribution of common respiratory viruses in adult patients with influenza-like illness (ILI) cases in Taiyuan City, Shanxi Province, China, epidemiological data between 2018 and 2019 were retrieved from the China Influenza Surveillance Information System, and two sentinel ILI surveillance hospitals were selected for sample collection. All specimens were screened for influenza virus (IFV) and the other 14 common respiratory viruses using real-time polymerase chain reaction. The results of the 2-year ILI surveillance showed that 26,205 (1.37%) of the 1,907,869 outpatients and emergency patients presented with ILI, with an average annual incidence of 297.75 per 100,000 individuals, and ILI cases were predominant in children

Abstract Background Global crises inevitably increase levels of anxiety in postpartum populations. Effective and efficient measurement is therefore essential. This study aimed to create a 12-item research short form of the 51-item Postpartum Specific Anxiety Scale [PSAS] and validate it for use in rapid response research at a time of global crises [PSAS-RSF-C]. We also present the same 12-items, in five other languages (Italian, French, Chinese, Spanish, Dutch) to increase global accessibility of a psychometric tool to assess maternal mental health. Methods Twelve items from the PSAS were selected on the basis of a review of their factor loadings. An on-line sample of UK mothers (N = 710) of infants up to 12 weeks old completed the PSAS-RSF-C during COVID-19 ‘lockdown’. Results Principal component analyses on a randomly split sample (n = 344) revealed four factors, identical in nature to the original PSAS, which in combination explained 75% of the total variance. Confirmatory factor analyses (n = 366) demonstrated the four-factor model fit the data well. Reliability of the overall scale and of the underlying factors in both samples proved excellent. Conclusions Findings suggest the PSAS-RSF-C may prove useful as a clinical screening tool and is the first postpartum-specific psychometric scale to be validated during the COVID-19 pandemic. This offers psychometrically sound assessment of postpartum anxiety. By increasing the accessibility of the PSAS, we aim to enable researchers the opportunity to measure maternal anxiety, rapidly, at times of global crisis.

Exposure to greenness may lead to a wide range of beneficial health outcomes. However, the effects of greenness on preterm birth (PTB) are inconsistent, and limited studies have focused on the subcategories of PTB. A total of 3,751,672 singleton births from a national birth cohort in mainland China were included in this study. Greenness was estimated using the satellite-based Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Enhanced Vegetation Index with 500-m and 1,000-m buffers around participants’ addresses. The subcategories of PTB (20–36 weeks) included extremely PTB (EPTB, 20–27 weeks), very PTB (VPTB, 28–31 week), and moderate-to-late PTB (MPTB, 32–36 weeks). Gestational age (GA) was included as another birth outcome. We used logistic regression models and multiple linear regression models to analyze these associations throughout the entire pregnancy. We found inverse associations between greenness and PTB and positive associations between greenness and GA. Specifically, an increase of 0.1 NDVI exposure within a 500-m buffer throughout the entire pregnancy was significantly associated with decreases in PTB (odds ratio [OR], 0.930; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.927–0.932), EPTB (OR, 0.820; 95% CI, 0.801–0.839), VPTB (OR, 0.913; 95% CI, 0.908–0.919), MPTB (OR, 0.934; 95% CI, 0.931–0.936), and an increase in GA (β = 0.050; 95% CI, 0.049–0.051 weeks). These results suggest the potential protective effects of greenness on PTB and its subcategories: MPTB, VPTB, and EPTB in China.

In recent years, the prevalence of hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) caused by enteroviruses other than enterovirus A71 (EV-A71) and coxsackievirus A16 (CVA16) has gradually increased. The throat swab specimens of 2701 HFMD cases were tested, the VP1 regions of CVA10 RNA were amplified using RT-PCR, and phylogenetic analysis of CVA10 was performed. Children aged 1–5 years accounted for the majority (81.65%) and boys were more than girls. The positivity rates of EV-A71, CVA16, and other EVs were 15.22% (219/1439), 28.77% (414/1439), and 56.01% (806/1439), respectively. CVA10 is one of the important viruses of other EVs. A total of 52 CVA10 strains were used for phylogenetic analysis based on the VP1 region, 31 were from this study, and 21 were downloaded from GenBank. All CVA10 sequences could be assigned to seven genotypes (A, B, C, D, E, F, and G), and genotype C was further divided into C1 and C2 subtypes, only one belonged to subtype C1 and the remaining 30 belonged to C2 in this study. This study emphasized the importance of strengthening the surveillance of HFMD to understand the mechanisms of pathogen variation and evolution, and to provide a scientific basis for HFMD prevention, control, and vaccine development.

Mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) therapy is a promising therapeutic approach based on its strong effect on pulmonary hypertension (PH) in rats. However, the detailed mechanism of MSC therapy remains unknown. Alterations in the gut microbiota were found in both type 1 pulmonary arterial hypertension patients and hypoxia/SU5416- or monocrotaline (MCT)-induced PH rats. However, whether the therapeutic mechanism of MSCs is associated with the gut microbiota is poorly understood. Here, we found that gut microbiota homeostasis was disrupted in hypoxia-induced PH mice due to the increased Firmicutes-to-Bacteroidetes (F/B) ratio; enhanced abundances of harmful Marinifilaceae, Helicobacteraceae, and Lactobacillaceae; and decreased abundances of beneficial Bacteroidaceae, Prevotellaceae, Tannerellaceae, and Lachnospiraceae. Unexpectedly, reverses of the increase in disease-associated microbiota and decrease in anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory functional microbiota were observed in the MSC-treated group. We also identified harmful Erysipelotrichaceae, Alphaproteobacteria, Christensenella timonensis, Coriobacteriales, and Rhodospirillales that may serve as gut microbiota biomarkers of hypoxia-induced PH mice. Micrococcaales, Nesterenkonia, Anaerotruncus, and Tyzzerella may serve as gut microbiota biomarkers of MSC-treated mice. In summary, MSC treatment suppresses hypoxia-induced pulmonary hypertension in mice, and alterated gut microbiota may play a role in the development and progression of PH. The mechanism of MSC therapy is associated with various metabolic pathways of the gut microbiota in hypoxia model PH mice.

This project implemented the Stroke1-2-0 stroke awareness programme across China and investigated its impact over a 2-year period. We initiated the Stroke1-2-0 educational campaign and Stroke1-2-0 special task forces (STF) across the nation. Massive media coverage, community-based educational sessions with videos and other related materials and induction of Stroke1-2-0 STF were the major means of promotion. We delivered a survey at the end of 2016 and 2018 to evaluate the impact of our effort. A total of 3066 participants responded to the first survey in 2016, and 15 207 participants responded in 2018 across China. The acceptance rate for Stroke1-2-0 versus FAST (an English-language stroke awareness tool) was 50.2% versus 19.1% in 2016, and changed significantly to 82.2% versus 8.0% in 2018 (p

Abstract Background A mountain of evidence has shown that people’s physical and mental health can be affected by various air pollutions. Poor pregnancy outcomes are associated with exposure to air pollution. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the association between air pollutions (PM2.5, PM10, SO2, NO2, CO, and O3) and preterm birth/low birth weight in Guangdong province, China. Method All maternal data and birth data from January 1, 2014 to December 31, 2015 were selected from a National Free Pre-pregnancy Check-ups system, and the daily air quality data of Guangdong Province was collected from China National Environmental Monitoring Center. 1784 women with either preterm birth information (n = 687) or low birth weight information (n = 1097) were used as experimental group. Control group included 1766 women with healthy birth information. Logistic regression models were employed to evaluate the effects of air pollutants on the risk of preterm birth and low birth weight. Results The pollution levels of PM2.5, PM10, SO2, NO2, CO, and O3 in Guangdong province were all lower than the national air pollution concentrations. The concentrations of PM2.5, PM10, SO2, NO2 and CO had obvious seasonal trends with the highest in winter and the lowest in summer. O3 concentrations in September (65.72 μg/m3) and October (84.18 μg/m3) were relatively higher. After controlling for the impact of confounding factors, the increases in the risk of preterm birth were associated with each 10 μg/m3 increase in PM2.5 (OR 1.043, 95% CI 1.01–1.09) and PM10 (OR 1.039, 95% CI 1.01~1.14) during the first trimester and in PM2.5 (OR 1.038, 95% CI 1.01~1.12), PM10 (OR 1.024, 95% CI 1.02~1.09), SO2 (OR 1.081, 95% CI 1.01~1.29), and O3 (OR 1.016, 95% CI 1.004~1.35) during the third trimester. The increase in the risk of low birth weight was associated with PM2.5, PM10, NO2, and O3 in the first month and the last month. Conclusion This study provides further evidence for the relationships between air pollutions and preterm birth/low birth weight. Pregnant women are recommended to reduce or avoid exposure to air pollutions during pregnancy, especially in the early and late stages of pregnancy.

Abstract Obesity has been increasing worldwide. Data on obesity status among men of reproductive age are scarce. This study aimed to assess the national prevalence and trend of overweight and obesity among reproductive-age men in rural China. In the nationwide population-based study, data were obtained from the National Free Preconception Health Examination Project in rural China from 2010 to 2014. Weight and height were measured in 16 161 982 men aged 15–49 years and their female partners (15 997 739 participants aged 15–49 years) before conception, and body mass index (BMI) was calculated. We found that the prevalence of combined overweight and obesity among men was 33.8% (33.7–33.9%) according to Chinese criteria (BMI ≥ 24.0 kg/m2), the corresponding rates of obesity were 6.3% (6.2–6.4%; BMI ≥ 28.0 kg/m2), respectively. The prevalence varied in different ethnic groups, geographic regions, age, education and GDP levels, and increasing trend was observed over the 5-year study period. In addition, 45.8% of couples had at least one of them as overweight or obesity. About one third of men aged 15–49 years before conception in rural China are overweight or obese. Overweight/obesity clusters in families, which highlights the importance of family involvement of early prevention of obesity in China.

BackgroundEpidemiological evidence on the association between long‐term exposure to ambient fine particulate matter (with an aerodynamic diameter ≤2.5 μm; PM2.5) and hypertension is mixed. We investigated the long‐term association between ambient fine particles and hypertension in reproductive‐age adults. Methods and ResultsThis analysis included 39 348 119 reproductive‐age (20–49 years) participants from the National Free Preconception Health Examination Project from April 22, 2010 to December 31, 2015 across China. The estimation of annual average ambient PM2.5 concentrations for each community was realized through using satellite‐based spatial statistical models. Linear mixed models and 2‐level logistic regressions adjusted for potential confounders with natural cubic splines were used to investigate the shape of PM2.5–blood pressure and PM2.5‐hypertension, respectively. The effect modification by sex, obesity, smoking status, age, diabetes mellitus, urbanity, race, and region was also taken into account. The concentration‐response relationship between PM2.5 and hypertension was nonlinear, with a threshold concentration of 47.9 μg/m3. The odds ratio of hypertension related to a 10‐μg/m3 increase in PM2.5 above threshold was 1.010 (95% confidence interval, 1.007–1.012). A 10‐μg/m3 increase in PM2.5 above threshold corresponded to a 0.569 (95% confidence interval, 0.564–0.573) mm Hg elevation in systolic blood pressure and a 0.384 (95% confidence interval, 0.381–0.388) mm Hg elevation in diastolic blood pressure. There were 2.3% (95% confidence interval, 2.2%–2.4%) of the hypertension cases that could be attributed to PM2.5 exposures in reproductive‐age adult populations. ConclusionsLong‐term exposures to PM2.5 above certain levels might increase population risk for hypertension and might be responsible for China's avoidable hypertension burden in reproductive‐age adults.

Previous studies indicated that parenting styles were important influencing factors for the development of children’s well-being. It is known that mass migration to the cities in China will affect family relations. However, few studies focused on the relationship between parenting styles and adolescents’ mental health in migrant families. Thus, this study aimed to investigate how parenting styles could affect adolescent’s social anxiety in migrant families. A total number of 1,345 adolescents in migrant families from four non-government-funded junior middle schools in Guangdong province formed the research sample. Parenting styles were measured using short-form of the Egna Minnen Beträffande Uppfostran, and social anxiety was evaluated using Social Anxiety Subscale of Self-Consciousness Scale. The results showed that emotional warmth, overprotection and rejection were significantly more often perceived from mothers than from fathers. Significant group differences between high social anxiety group and low social anxiety group were found in both father’s rearing styles and mother’s rearing styles. Furthermore, in migrant families, paternal emotional warmth could decrease adolescents’ social anxiety, whereas maternal overprotection could increase it.

Background The effect of second‐hand smoking, especially husband smoking, on wife's hypertension has not been well studied. The current study was aimed to assess the association of husband smoking with wife's hypertension among females aged 20 to 49 years. Methods and Results This study included 5 027 731 females along with their husbands from the National Free Pre‐pregnancy Checkup Projects conducted across 31 provinces in China in 2014. Smoking/passive smoking status was collected by a standard questionnaire and blood pressure was measured by an electronic device after 10 minutes rest. Odds ratios and their corresponding 95% CIs for female hypertension were estimated according to smoking status of husband and wife, husbands' smoking amount, and cumulative exposure to husband smoking. Compared with neither‐smoker group, the multivariable‐adjusted odds ratio for female hypertension was 1.28 (1.27–1.30), 1.53 (1.30–1.79), and 1.50 (1.36–1.67) in husband‐only, wife‐only, and mixed group, respectively. Furthermore, a higher risk of having hypertension was associated with amount and cumulative exposure of husband smoking.
