Abstract

Research interests in two-dimensional (2D) materials have seen exponential growth owing to their unique and fascinating properties. The highly exposed lattice planes coupled with tunable electronic states of 2D materials have created manifold opportunities in the design of new platforms for energy conversion and sensing applications. Still, challenges in understanding the electrochemical (EC) characteristics of these materials arise from the complexity of both intrinsic and extrinsic heterogeneities that can obscure structure-activity correlations. Scanning EC probe microscopic investigations offer unique benefits in disclosing local EC reactivities at the nanoscale level that are otherwise inaccessible with macroscale methods. This review summarizes recent progress in applying techniques of scanning EC microscopy (SECM) and scanning EC cell microscopy (SECCM) to obtain distinctive insights into the fundamentals of 2D electrodes. We showcase the capabilities of EC microscopies in addressing the roles of defects, thickness, environments, strain, phase, stacking, and many other aspects in the heterogeneous electron transfer, ion transport, electrocatalysis, and photoelectrochemistry of representative 2D materials and their derivatives. Perspectives for the advantages, challenges, and future opportunities of scanning EC probe microscopy investigation of 2D structures are discussed.

3. SeizNet: An AI-enabled Implantable Sensor Network System for Seizure Prediction

Abstract

In this paper, we introduce SeizNet, a closed-loop system for predicting epileptic seizures through the use of Deep Learning (DL) method and implantable sensor networks. While pharmacological treatment is effective for some epilepsy patients (with ~65M people affected worldwide), one out of three suffer from drug-resistant epilepsy. To alleviate the impact of seizure, predictive systems have been developed that can notify such patients of an impending seizure, allowing them to take precautionary measures. SeizNet leverages DL techniques and combines data from multiple recordings, specifically intracranial electroencephalogram (iEEG) and electrocardiogram (ECG) sensors, that can significantly improve the specificity of seizure prediction while preserving very high levels of sensitivity. SeizNet DL algorithms are designed for efficient real-time execution at the edge, minimizing data privacy concerns, data transmission overhead, and power inefficiencies associated with cloud-based solutions. Our results indicate that SeizNet outperforms traditional single-modality and non-personalized prediction systems in all metrics, achieving up to 99% accuracy in predicting seizure, offering a promising new avenue in refractory epilepsy treatment., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, 1 table

4. Visualizing High-Dimensional Configuration Spaces: A Comprehensive Analytical Approach

Abstract

The representation of a Configuration Space C plays a vital role in accelerating the finding of a collision-free path for sampling-based motion planners where the majority of computation time is spent in collision checking of states. Traditionally, planners evaluate C's representations through limited evaluations of collision-free paths using the collision checker or by reducing the dimensionality of C for visualization. However, a collision checker may indicate high accuracy even when only a subset of the original C is represented; limiting the motion planner's ability to find paths comparable to those in the original C. Additionally, dealing with high-dimensional Cs is challenging, as qualitative evaluations become increasingly difficult in dimensions higher than three, where reduced-dimensional C evaluation may decrease accuracy in cluttered environments. In this paper, we present a novel approach for visualizing representations of high-dimensional Cs of manipulator robots in a 2D format. We provide a new tool for qualitative evaluation of high-dimensional Cs approximations without reducing the original dimension. This enhances our ability to compare the accuracy and coverage of two different high-dimensional Cs. Leveraging the kinematic chain of manipulator robots and human color perception, we show the efficacy of our method using a 7-degree-of-freedom CS of a manipulator robot. This visualization offers qualitative insights into the joint boundaries of the robot and the coverage of collision state combinations without reducing the dimensionality of the original data. 5. Widespread Pressure Pain Hyperalgesia Is Not Associated With Morphological Changes of the Wrist Extensor Tendon in Unilateral Lateral Epicondylalgia: A Case-Control Study

Abstract

Objective. The aims of the current study were to investigate the presence of widespread pressure hyperalgesia, the presence of structural changes in the wrist extensor tendon and muscle, and their association in people with lateral epicondylalgia (LE). Methods. Thirty-seven patients with LE (43% women; mean age = 45.5 [SD = 9.5] years) and 37 controls matched for age and sex and free of pain participated in this study. Pressure pain thresholds (PPTs) were assessed bilaterally over the symptomatic area (elbow), 2 segment-related areas (C5-C6 joint, second intermetacarpal space), and 1 remote area (tibialis anterior) in a blinded design. Ultrasound measurements (eg, cross-sectional area, thickness, and width) of the common wrist extensor tendon and extensor carpi radialis brevis muscle as well as the thickness of the supinator muscle were assessed. Results. Patients with LE exhibited lower PPTs bilaterally at all points and lower PPTs at the lateral epicondyle and second intermetacarpal space on the symptomatic side as compared to the nonsymptomatic side ([[eta].sup.2] from 0.123-0.369; large effects). Patients exhibited higher cross-sectional area and width of the common wrist extensor tendon ([[eta].sup.2] from 0.2680.311; large effects) than controls bilaterally, whereas tendon thickness was also higher ([[eta].sup.2] = 0.039; small effects) on the painful side than on the nonpainful side. Conclusions. This study reported bilateral widespread pressure pain hyperalgesia and morphological changes in the tendon, but not the muscle, in LE. Pressure pain sensitivity and morphological changes were not associated in individuals with LE. Impact. Management of LE should consider altered nociceptive pain processing and structural tendon changes as 2 different phenomena in patients with LE. Abstract

This paper addresses the challenges of optimally placing a finite number of sensors to detect Poisson-distributed targets in a bounded domain. We seek to rigorously account for uncertainty in the target arrival model throughout the problem. Sensor locations are selected to maximize the probability that no targets are missed. While this objective function is well-suited to applications where failure to detect targets is highly undesirable, it does not lead to a computationally efficient optimization problem. We propose an approximation of the objective function that is non-negative, submodular, and monotone and for which greedy selection of sensor locations works well. We also characterize the gap between the desired objective function and our approximation. 7. Improving Path Planning Performance through Multimodal Generative Models with Local Critics

Abstract

This paper presents a novel method for accelerating path planning tasks in unknown scenes with obstacles by utilizing Wasserstein Generative Adversarial Networks (WGANs) with Gradient Penalty (GP) to approximate the distribution of the free conditioned configuration space. Our proposed approach involves conditioning the WGAN-GP with a Variational Auto-Encoder in a continuous latent space to handle multimodal datasets. However, training a Variational Auto-Encoder with WGAN-GP can be challenging for image-to-configuration-space problems, as the Kullback-Leibler loss function often converges to a random distribution. To overcome this issue, we simplify the configuration space as a set of Gaussian distributions and divide the dataset into several local models. This enables us to not only learn the model but also speed up its convergence. We evaluate the reconstructed configuration space using the homology rank of manifolds for datasets with the geometry score. Furthermore, we propose a novel transformation of the robot's configuration space that enables us to measure how well collision-free regions are reconstructed, which could be used with other rank of homology metrics. Our experiments show promising results for accelerating path planning tasks in unknown scenes while generating quasi-optimal paths with our WGAN-GP. Abstract

The Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) is currently measuring the spectra of 40\,million galaxies and quasars, the largest such survey ever made to probe the nature of cosmological dark energy. The 4-meter Mayall telescope at Kitt Peak National Observatory has been adapted for DESI, including the construction of a 3.2-degree diameter prime focus corrector that focuses astronomical light onto a 0.8-meter diameter focal surface with excellent image quality over the DESI bandpass of 360-980nm. The wide-field corrector includes six lenses, as large as 1.1-meters in diameter and as heavy as 237\,kilograms, including two counter-rotating wedged lenses that correct for atmospheric dispersion over Zenith angles from 0 to 60 degrees. The lenses, cells, and barrel assembly all meet precise alignment tolerances on the order of tens of microns. The barrel alignment is maintained throughout a range of observing angles and temperature excursions in the Mayall dome by use of a hexapod, which is itself supported by a new cage, ring, and truss structure. In this paper we describe the design, fabrication, and performance of the new corrector and associated structure, focusing on how they meet DESI requirements. In particular we describe the prescription and specifications of the lenses, design choices and error budgeting of the barrel assembly, stray light mitigations, and integration and test at the Mayall telescope. We conclude with some validation highlights that demonstrate the successful corrector on-sky performance, and list some lessons learned during the multi-year fabrication phase., Comment: 68 pages, 56 figures, 22 tables. Abstract

A system of 5,020 robotic fiber positioners was installed in 2019 on the Mayall Telescope, at Kitt Peak National Observatory. The robots automatically re-target their optical fibers every 10 - 20 minutes, each to a precision of several microns, with a reconfiguration time less than 2 minutes. Over the next five years, they will enable the newly-constructed Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) to measure the spectra of 35 million galaxies and quasars. DESI will produce the largest 3D map of the universe to date and measure the expansion history of the cosmos. In addition to the 5,020 robotic positioners and optical fibers, DESI's Focal Plane System includes 6 guide cameras, 4 wavefront cameras, 123 fiducial point sources, and a metrology camera mounted at the primary mirror. The system also includes associated structural, thermal, and electrical systems. In all, it contains over 675,000 individual parts. We discuss the design, construction, quality control, and integration of all these components. Abstract

The PAU (Physics of the Accelerating Universe) Survey goal is to obtain photometric redshifts (photo-z) and Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) of astronomical objects with a resolution roughly one order of magnitude better than current broad band photometric surveys. To accomplish this, a new large field of view camera (PAUCam) has been designed, built, commissioned and is now operated at the William Herschel Telescope (WHT). With the current WHT Prime Focus corrector, the camera covers ~1-degree diameter Field of View (FoV), of which, only the inner ~40 arcmin diameter are unvignetted. The focal plane consists of a mosaic of 18 2k$x4k Hamamatsu fully depleted CCDs, with high quantum efficiency up to 1 micrometers in wavelength. To maximize the detector coverage within the FoV, filters are placed in front of the CCDs inside the camera cryostat (made out of carbon fiber) using a challenging movable tray system. The camera uses a set of 40 narrow band filters ranging from ~4500 to ~8500 Angstroms complemented with six standard broad-band filters, ugrizY. The PAU Survey aims to cover roughly 100 square degrees over fields with existing deep photometry and galaxy shapes to obtain accurate photometric redshifts for galaxies down to i_AB~22.5, detecting also galaxies down to i_AB~24 with less precision in redshift. With this data set we will be able to measure intrinsic alignments, galaxy clustering and perform galaxy evolution studies in a new range of densities and redshifts. Abstract

The distributions of migratory species in the ocean span local, national and international jurisdictions. Across these ecologically interconnected regions, migratory marine species interact with anthropogenic stressors throughout their lives. Migratory connectivity, the geographical linking of individuals and populations throughout their migratory cycles, influences how spatial and temporal dynamics of stressors affect migratory animals and scale up to influence population abundance, distribution and species persistence. Population declines of many migratory marine species have led to calls for connectivity knowledge, especially insights from animal tracking studies, to be more systematically and synthetically incorporated into decision-making. Inclusion of migratory connectivity in the design of conservation and management measures is critical to ensure they are appropriate for the level of risk associated with various degrees of connectivity. Three mechanisms exist to incorporate migratory connectivity into international marine policy which guides conservation implementation: site-selection criteria, network design criteria and policy recommendations. Here, we review the concept of migratory connectivity and its use in international policy, and describe the Migratory Connectivity in the Ocean system, a migratory connectivity evidence-base for the ocean. We propose that without such collaboration focused on migratory connectivity, efforts to effectively conserve these critical species across jurisdictions will have limited effect.

Abstract

The distributions of migratory species in the ocean span local, national and international jurisdictions. Across these ecologically interconnected regions, migratory marine species interact with anthropogenic stressors throughout their lives. Migratory connectivity, the geographical linking of individuals and populations throughout their migratory cycles, influences how spatial and temporal dynamics of stressors affect migratory animals and scale up to influence population abundance, distribution and species persistence. Population declines of many migratory marine species have led to calls for connectivity knowledge, especially insights from animal tracking studies, to be more systematically and synthetically incorporated into decision-making. Inclusion of migratory connectivity in the design of conservation and management measures is critical to ensure they are appropriate for the level of risk associated with various degrees of connectivity. Three mechanisms exist to incorporate migratory connectivity into international marine policy which guides conservation implementation: site-selection criteria, network design criteria and policy recommendations. Here, we review the concept of migratory connectivity and its use in international policy, and describe the Migratory Connectivity in the Ocean system, a migratory connectivity evidence-base for the ocean. We propose that without such collaboration focused on migratory connectivity, efforts to effectively conserve these critical species across jurisdictions will have limited effect.

Abstract

The Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) is under construction to measure the expansion history of the universe using the baryon acoustic oscillations technique. The spectra of 35 million galaxies and quasars over 14,000 square degrees will be measured during a 5-year survey. A new prime focus corrector for the Mayall telescope at Kitt Peak National Observatory will deliver light to 5,000 individually targeted fiber-fed robotic positioners. The fibers in turn feed ten broadband multi-object spectrographs. We describe the ProtoDESI experiment, that was installed and commissioned on the 4-m Mayall telescope from August 14 to September 30, 2016. ProtoDESI was an on-sky technology demonstration with the goal to reduce technical risks associated with aligning optical fibers with targets using robotic fiber positioners and maintaining the stability required to operate DESI. The ProtoDESI prime focus instrument, consisting of three fiber positioners, illuminated fiducials, and a guide camera, was installed behind the existing Mosaic corrector on the Mayall telescope. A Fiber View Camera was mounted in the Cassegrain cage of the telescope and provided feedback metrology for positioning the fibers. ProtoDESI also provided a platform for early integration of hardware with the DESI Instrument Control System that controls the subsystems, provides communication with the Telescope Control System, and collects instrument telemetry data. Lacking a spectrograph, ProtoDESI monitored the output of the fibers using a Fiber Photometry Camera mounted on the prime focus instrument. Abstract

DESI (Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument) is a Stage IV ground-based dark energy experiment that will study baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) and the growth of structure through redshift-space distortions with a wide-area galaxy and quasar redshift survey. To trace the underlying dark matter distribution, spectroscopic targets will be selected in four classes from imaging data. We will measure luminous red galaxies up to $z=1.0$. To probe the Universe out to even higher redshift, DESI will target bright [O II] emission line galaxies up to $z=1.7$. Quasars will be targeted both as direct tracers of the underlying dark matter distribution and, at higher redshifts ($ 2.1 < z < 3.5$), for the Ly-$\alpha$ forest absorption features in their spectra, which will be used to trace the distribution of neutral hydrogen. When moonlight prevents efficient observations of the faint targets of the baseline survey, DESI will conduct a magnitude-limited Bright Galaxy Survey comprising approximately 10 million galaxies with a median $z\approx 0.2$. In total, more than 30 million galaxy and quasar redshifts will be obtained to measure the BAO feature and determine the matter power spectrum, including redshift space distortions.

Abstract

DESI (Dark Energy Spectropic Instrument) is a Stage IV ground-based dark energy experiment that will study baryon acoustic oscillations and the growth of structure through redshift-space distortions with a wide-area galaxy and quasar redshift survey. The DESI instrument is a robotically-actuated, fiber-fed spectrograph capable of taking up to 5,000 simultaneous spectra over a wavelength range from 360 nm to 980 nm. The fibers feed ten three-arm spectrographs with resolution $R= \lambda/\Delta\lambda$ between 2000 and 5500, depending on wavelength. The DESI instrument will be used to conduct a five-year survey designed to cover 14,000 deg$^2$. This powerful instrument will be installed at prime focus on the 4-m Mayall telescope in Kitt Peak, Arizona, along with a new optical corrector, which will provide a three-degree diameter field of view. The DESI collaboration will also deliver a spectroscopic pipeline and data management system to reduce and archive all data for eventual public use.

Abstract

A photo-active luminescent rhenium carbonyl complex namely, [Re(CO)3(phen)(pyAl)](CF3SO3) was grafted on a biocompatible carboxymethyl chitosan (CMC) matrix through Schiff base condensation reaction. The light-induced CO delivery from ReCMC has been shown to eradicate human colorectal adenocarcinoma cells (HT-29) very efficiently in a dose-dependent fashion. The onset of CO-induced apoptosis was realized by caspase-3,-7 detection aided by fluorescence confocal microscopy. ReCMC represents a unique example of a biocompatible and biodegradable antineoplastic agent that could find its use in cancer photopharmacology.
