This paper introduces a general approach for synthesizing procedural models of the state-transitions of a given discrete system. The approach is general in that it accepts different target languages for modeling the state-transitions of a discrete system; different model acquisition tasks with different target languages, such as the synthesis of STRIPS action models, or the update rule of a cellular automaton, fit as particular instances of our general approach. We follow an inductive approach to synthesis meaning that a set of examples of state-transitions, represented as (pre-state, action, post-state) tuples, are given as input. The goal is to synthesize a structured program that, when executed on a given pre-state, outputs its associated post-state. Our synthesis method implements a combinatorial search in the space of well-structured terminating programs that can be built using a Random-Access Machine (RAM), with a minimalist instruction set, and a finite amount of memory. Planning as heuristic search is one of the most successful approaches to classical planning but unfortunately, it does not extend trivially to Generalized Planning (GP). GP aims to compute algorithmic solutions that are valid for a set of classical planning instances from a given domain, even if these instances differ in the number of objects, the number of state variables, their domain size, or their initial and goal configuration. The generalization requirements of GP make it impractical to perform the state-space search that is usually implemented by heuristic planners. This paper adapts the planning as heuristic search paradigm to the generalization requirements of GP, and presents the first native heuristic search approach to GP. First, the paper introduces a new pointer-based solution space for GP that is independent of the number of classical planning instances in a GP problem and the size of those instances (i.e. the number of objects, state variables and their domain sizes). Second, the paper defines a set of evaluation and heuristic functions for guiding a combinatorial search in our new GP solution space. The computation of these evaluation and heuristic functions does not require grounding states or actions in advance. Therefore our GP as heuristic search approach can handle large sets of state variables with large numerical domains, e.g.~integers. The paper introduces a novel representation for Generalized Planning (GP) problems, and their solutions, as C++ programs. Our C++ representation allows to formally proving the termination of generalized plans, and to specifying their asymptotic complexity w.r.t. the number of world objects. Characterizing the complexity of C++ generalized plans enables the application of a combinatorial search that enumerates the space of possible GP solutions in order of complexity. Experimental results show that our implementation of this approach, which we call BFGP++, outperforms the previous GP as heuristic search approach for the computation of generalized plans represented as compiler-styled programs. Last but not least, the execution of a C++ program on a classical planning instance is a deterministic grounding-free and search-free process, so our C++ representation allows us to automatically validate the computed solutions on large test instances of thousands of objects, where off-the-shelf classical planners get stuck either in the pre-processing or in the search., Comment: Accepted at sixth workshop on Generalization in Planning at IJCAI-ECAI 2022

Landmarks are one of the most effective search heuristics for classical planning, but largely ignored in generalized planning. Generalized planning (GP) is usually addressed as a combinatorial search in a given space of algorithmic solutions, where candidate solutions are evaluated w.r.t.~the instances they solve. This type of solution evaluation ignores any sub-goal information that is not explicit in the representation of the planning instances, causing plateaus in the space of candidate generalized plans. Furthermore, node expansion in GP is a run-time bottleneck since it requires evaluating every child node over the entire batch of classical planning instances in a GP problem. In this paper we define a landmark counting heuristic for GP (that considers sub-goal information that is not explicitly represented in the planning instances), and a novel heuristic search algorithm for GP (that we call PGP) and that progressively processes subsets of the planning instances of a GP problem. Our two orthogonal contributions are analyzed in an ablation study, showing that both improve the state-of-the-art in GP as heuristic search, and that both benefit from each other when used in combination., Comment: Accepted at SoCS 2022 (extended version)

In social commerce, users dialogue with each other on the topics related to the providers' products. However, the language customers use may vary from the language vendors use on their e-commerce websites and product descriptions. This situation can lead to possible misunderstandings in the social dialogue between customers, and incidental costs in the dialogue between customers and vendors. One possible reason for this difference is that words used by customers may have different meanings compared to those used by product description writers. We present a novel approach to measure this potential lexical-semantic gap for various e-commerce domains using an information-theoretical approach based on a large corpus of user reviews and product descriptions. Additionally, we use neural word embeddings to identify words with the highest semantic drift between reviews and descriptions as a tool to construct a ground truth for the task. We found that low levels of lexical-semantic gap are related to better customer satisfaction. Besides, this work is a step towards a better understanding of the effect of the use of language in e-commerce and social commerce. Potential applications of this technology could lead to better communication between customers and improvements in customer satisfaction, services, and revenue. Furthermore, this study opens up perspectives for applications in other domains with relationships beyond client-vendor, such as citizen-government and patient-healthcare system.

Developments in Genome-Wide Association Studies have led to the increasing notion that future healthcare techniques will be personalized to the patient, by relying on genetic tests to determine the risk of developing a disease. To this end, the detection of gene interactions that cause complex diseases constitutes an important application. Similarly to many applications in this field, extensive data sets containing genetic information for a series of patients are used (such as Single-Nucleotide Polymorphisms), leading to high computational complexity and memory utilization, thus constituting a major challenge when targeting high-performance execution in modern computing systems. To close this gap, this work proposes several novel approaches for the detection of three-way gene interactions in modern CPUs and GPUs, making use of different optimizations to fully exploit the target architectures. Crucial insights from the Cache-Aware Roofline Model are used to ensure the suitability of the applications to the computing devices. An extensive study of the architectural features of 13 CPU and GPU devices from all main vendors is also presented, allowing to understand the features relevant to obtain high-performance in this bioinformatics domain. To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first to perform such evaluation for epistasis detection. The proposed approaches are able to surpass the performance of state-of-the-art works in the tested platforms, achieving an average speedup of 3.9$\times$ (7.3$\times$ on CPUs and 2.8$\times$ on GPUs) and maximum speedup of 10.6$\times$ on Intel UHD P630 GPU., Comment: To appear in 36th IEEE International Parallel & Distributed Processing Symposium (IPDPS 2022)

We present our systems and findings on unsupervised lexical semantic change for the Italian language in the DIACR-Ita shared-task at EVALITA 2020. The task is to determine whether a target word has evolved its meaning with time, only relying on raw-text from two time-specific datasets. We propose two models representing the target words across the periods to predict the changing words using threshold and voting schemes. Our first model solely relies on part-of-speech usage and an ensemble of distance measures. The second model uses word embedding representation to extract the neighbor's relative distances across spaces and propose "the average of absolute differences" to estimate lexical semantic change. Our models achieved competent results, ranking third in the DIACR-Ita competition. Furthermore, we experiment with the k_neighbor parameter of our second model to compare the impact of using "the average of absolute differences" versus the cosine distance used in Hamilton et al. Generalized planning aims at computing an algorithm-like structure (generalized plan) that solves a set of multiple planning instances. In this paper we define negative examples for generalized planning as planning instances that must not be solved by a generalized plan. With this regard the paper extends the notion of validation of a generalized plan as the problem of verifying that a given generalized plan solves the set of input positives instances while it fails to solve a given input set of negative examples. This notion of plan validation allows us to define quantitative metrics to asses the generalization capacity of generalized plans. The paper also shows how to incorporate this new notion of plan validation into a compilation for plan synthesis that takes both positive and negative instances as input. Experiments show that incorporating negative examples can accelerate plan synthesis in several domains and leverage quantitative metrics to evaluate the generalization capacity of the synthesized plans., Comment: Accepted at AAAI-20 (oral presentation)

Finite State Controllers (FSCs) are an effective way to represent sequential plans compactly. By imposing appropriate conditions on transitions, FSCs can also represent generalized plans that solve a range of planning problems from a given domain. In this paper we introduce the concept of {\it hierarchical FSCs} for planning by allowing controllers to call other controllers. We show that hierarchical FSCs can represent generalized plans more compactly than individual FSCs. Moreover, our call mechanism makes it possible to generate hierarchical FSCs in a modular fashion, or even to apply recursion. We also introduce a compilation that enables a classical planner to generate hierarchical FSCs that solve challenging generalized planning problems. Generalized planning is the task of generating a single solution that is valid for a set of planning problems. In this paper we show how to represent and compute generalized plans using procedural Domain Control Knowledge (DCK). We define a {\it divide and conquer} approach that first generates the procedural DCK solving a set of planning problems representative of certain subtasks and then compile it as callable procedures of the overall generalized planning problem. Our procedure calling mechanism allows nested and recursive procedure calls and is implemented in PDDL so that classical planners can compute and exploit procedural DCK. Experiments show that an off-the-shelf classical planner, using procedural DCK as callable procedures, can compute generalized plans in a wide range of domains including non-trivial ones, such as sorting variable-size lists or DFS traversal of binary trees with variable size., Comment: ICAPS 2016, 9 pages

Yask is an online social collaborative network for practicing languages in a framework that includes requests, answers, and votes. Since measuring linguistic competence using current approaches is difficult, expensive and in many cases imprecise, we present a new alternative approach based on social networks. Our method, called Proficiency Rank, extends the well-known Page Rank algorithm to measure the reputation of users in a collaborative social graph. First, we extended Page Rank so that it not only considers positive links (votes) but also negative links. Second, in addition to using explicit links, we also incorporate other 4 types of signals implicit in the social graph. These extensions allow Proficiency Rank to produce proficiency rankings for almost all users in the data set used, where only a minority contributes by answering, while the majority contributes only by voting. This overcomes the intrinsic limitation of Page Rank of only being able to rank the nodes that have incoming links. Our experimental validation showed that the reputation/importance of the users in Yask is significantly correlated with their language proficiency. In contrast, their written production was poorly correlated with the vocabulary profiles of the Common European Framework of Reference. In addition, we found that negative signals (votes) are considerably more informative than positive ones. We concluded that the use of this technology is a promising tool for measuring second language proficiency, even for relatively small groups of people.

This paper presents a novel approach for learning STRIPS action models from examples that compiles this inductive learning task into a classical planning task. Interestingly, the compilation approach is flexible to different amounts of available input knowledge; the learning examples can range from a set of plans (with their corresponding initial and final states) to just a pair of initial and final states (no intermediate action or state is given). Moreover, the compilation accepts partially specified action models and it can be used to validate whether the observation of a plan execution follows a given STRIPS action model, even if this model is not fully specified., Comment: 8+1 pages, 4 figures, 6 tables

Collaborative filtering based recommender systems have proven to be extremely successful in settings where user preference data on items is abundant. However, collaborative filtering algorithms are hindered by their weakness against the item cold-start problem and general lack of interpretability. Ontology-based recommender systems exploit hierarchical organizations of users and items to enhance browsing, recommendation, and profile construction. While ontology-based approaches address the shortcomings of their collaborative filtering counterparts, ontological organizations of items can be difficult to obtain for items that mostly belong to the same category (e.g., television series episodes). In this paper, we present an ontology-based recommender system that integrates the knowledge represented in a large ontology of literary themes to produce fiction content recommendations. The main novelty of this work is an ontology-based method for computing similarities between items and its integration with the classical Item-KNN (K-nearest neighbors) algorithm. As a study case, we evaluated the proposed method against other approaches by performing the classical rating prediction task on a collection of Star Trek television series episodes in an item cold-start scenario. This transverse evaluation provides insights into the utility of different information resources and methods for the initial stages of recommender system development. We found our proposed method to be a convenient alternative to collaborative filtering approaches for collections of mostly similar items, particularly when other content-based approaches are not applicable or otherwise unavailable. We calculate the wave-function renormalization in 2-dimensional O(3) sigma model, non- perturbatively. It is evaluated in a box with a finite spatial extent. We determine the anomalous dimension in the finite volume scheme through an analysis of the step scaling function.
