Abstract Background and objectives This study aimed to analyze and present updated trends in atrial fibrillation (AF) epidemiology within the Korean population, providing a foundation for planning and implementing appropriate management and treatment strategies for patients with AF. Patients and methods We used the Korean National Health Insurance Service database to evaluate the prevalence, incidence, comorbidities, and clinical adverse outcomes of patients with AF in Korea between 2013 and 2022. Results AF prevalence in Korean adults aged ≥ 20 years doubled (1.1 to 2.2%) between 2013 and 2022, with significant increases observed across various sex and age groups. Similarly, the number of newly diagnosed patients with AF per year increased steadily, with the incidence rising from 184 to 275 per 100,000 person-years, particularly among older populations. Over this period, the mean age of patients with AF increased from 67.7 to 70.3 years, and comorbidities prevalence and CHA2DS2-VASc score rose significantly, indicating a higher stroke risk. Compared with patients without AF, AF was associated with an increased risk of mortality (hazard ratio [HR]: 1.78), ischemic stroke (HR: 2.39), major bleeding (HR: 2.10), myocardial infarction (HR: 1.44), and heart failure admission (HR: 2.42). Conclusion AF prevalence and incidence have steadily increased between 2013 and 2022, with a more pronounced increase in older patients. Patients with AF are increasingly becoming a high-risk population and are at increased risk of clinical adverse outcomes compared to non-AF patients. Therefore, a sustained national effort to improve AF awareness and comprehensive care quality for patients with AF is required.

Oxide dispersion-strengthened (ODS) superalloys are usually manufactured by a hot isostatic pressing after mechanical alloying (MA-HIP). However, this process cannot produce complex-shaped parts. Here, we used an additive manufacturing product (powders produced by laser powder bed fusion, L-PBF) to address this issue. Modified ODS Ni-based superalloy powders with a similar composition to the mechanical alloy 6000 (MA6000) were manufactured using a gas atomization process. The obtained powders and L-PBF synthesized samples were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), LPSA, and EBSD analyses.

Powder materials strengthened by oxide dispersion are generally made by in-situ method; direct oxide dispersing in matrix powders during atomization. There is also ex-situ method; oxides dispersing by mixing with matrix powders. In this study powder mixtures (Inconel 738 matrix powder + SiO2 powder + Al2O3 powder) were mechanically manufactured by ex-situ process, a lowenergy ball milling method. Then, specimens of the as-mill powders were manufactured by laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) method and spark plasma sintering (SPS) process. The microstructures of each prepared specimen were compared according to process variables. SEM, EDS, XRD, and Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD) analyses were applied in this study.

Abstract The regenerative ability of skeletal muscle (SM) in response to damage, injury, or disease is a highly intricate process that involves the coordinated activities of multiple cell types and biomolecular factors. Of these, extracellular matrix (ECM) is considered a fundamental component of SM regenerative ability. This review briefly discusses SM myogenesis and regeneration, the roles played by muscle satellite cells (MSCs), other cells, and ECM components, and the effects of their dysregulations on these processes. In addition, we review the various types of ECM scaffolds and biomaterials used for SM regeneration, their applications, recent advances in ECM scaffold research, and their impacts on tissue engineering and SM regeneration, especially in the context of severe muscle injury, which frequently results in substantial muscle loss and impaired regenerative capacity. This review was undertaken to provide a comprehensive overview of SM myogenesis and regeneration, the stem cells used for muscle regeneration, the significance of ECM in SM regeneration, and to enhance understanding of the essential role of the ECM scaffold during SM regeneration.

Abstract Background and Aims It is demonstrated that lipid metabolism disorders are associated with the reproductive performances of assisted reproductive technology. However, it is little known whether hyperlipidemia is associated with the endometrial receptivity and pregnancy outcomes of patients undergoing frozen‐thawed embryo transfer (FET). Methods This was a retrospective analysis involving 554 infertile women undergoing FET. The patients were divided into the hyperlipidemia group (n = 224) and control group (n = 320) based on the levels of serum lipids. The clinical and laboratory indexes between the two groups were compared. Meanwhile, the stratified analysis based on body mass index (BMI) and endometrial preparation protocols was performed. The independent samples t‐test, Mann−Whitney U test, χ2 test and multiple logistic regression analysis were used to compare and analyze the data. Abstract Background The aim of this study was to explore the mechanism whereby LACC1 regulates the intestinal flora in a mouse model of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Methods C57BL/6 and Lacc1 −/− mice were used to establish a mouse model of IBD induced by dextran sodium sulfate (DSS). The effects of Lacc1 deletion in mice were evaluated. Changes in the body weight and stool blood were recorded daily. Abstract We explore the possibility of embedding thermal leptogenesis within a first-order phase transition (FOPT) such that RHNs remain massless until a FOPT arises. Their sudden and violent mass gain allows the neutrinos to become thermally decoupled, and the lepton asymmetry generated from their decay can be, in principle, free from the strong wash-out processes that conventional leptogenesis scenarios suffer from, albeit at the cost of new washout channels. To quantify the effect of this enhancement, we consider a simple setup of a classically scale-invariant B − L potential, which requires three RHNs with similar mass scales, in the “strong-washout” regime of thermal leptogenesis. Here we find that parameter space which requires M N ~ 1011 GeV without bubble assistance is now predicted at M N ~ 5 × 109 GeV suggesting a sizeable reduction from bubble effects. We numerically quantify to what extent such a framework can alleviate strong-washout effects and we find the lower bound on the RHN mass, M N ~ 107 GeV, below which bubble-assisted leptogenesis cannot provide an enhancement. We also study the signature possibly observable at GW terrestrial interferometers and conclude that bubble-assisted leptogenesis models with relatively light masses, M N ≲ 5 × 109 GeV may be probable.

Abstract This study aimed to assess the impact of a prolonged carbapenem use-focused antimicrobial stewardship program (ASP) on antimicrobial consumption and clinical outcomes and to analyze factors affecting adherence to interventions. Patients prescribed carbapenems for ≥ 2 weeks received intervention. Interrupted time-series analysis was performed to compare antimicrobial consumption before and after intervention. Factors associated with non-adherence to intervention were investigated. Of 273 patients who were eligible for intervention, discontinuation or de-escalation was recommended in 256 (94.1%) and intervention was accepted in 136 (53.1%) patients. Before intervention, carbapenem consumption significantly increased to 1.14 days of therapy (DOT)/1000 patient days (PD)/month (P = 0.018). Abstract In the Dynamical Scotogenic Model, the global B − L symmetry is supposed to be broken spontaneously resulting in a massless Goldstone boson called majoron, and massive right handed neutrinos which participate in the generation of light neutrino massses at one-loop. One of them being the lightest stable particle can be a thermal dark matter candidate. We discuss how the dark matter phenomenology differs from the original Scotogenic model, taking into account all the constraints coming from the observed neutrino masses and mixing, lepton flavor violations such as μ → eγ, μ → eJ, astrophysical and cosmological observations of stellar cooling and N eff, as well as collider signatures such as Higgs invisible decays. We find that the dark matter annihilation to majorons plays an important role to produce the right relic abundance.

A polystyrene phantom was developed following the guidance of the International Atomic Energy Association (IAEA) for gamma knife (GK) quality assurance. Its performance was assessed by measuring the absorbed dose rate to water and dose distributions. The phantom was made of polystyrene, which has an electron density (1.0156) similar to that of water. The phantom included one outer phantom and four inner phantoms. Two inner phantoms held PTW T31010 and Exradin A16 ion chambers. One inner phantom held a film in the XY plane of the Leksell coordinate system, and another inner phantom held a film in the YZ or ZX planes. The absorbed dose rate to water and beam profiles of the machine-specific reference (msr) field, namely, the 16 mm collimator field of a GK Perfexion™ or Icon™, were measured at seven GK sites. The measured results were compared to those of an IAEA-recommended solid water (SW) phantom. The radius of the polystyrene phantom was determined to be 7.88 cm by converting the electron density of the plastic, considering a water depth of 8 g/cm2. The absorbed dose rates to water measured in both phantoms differed from the treatment planning program by less than 1.1%. Before msr correction, the PTW T31010 dose rates (PTW Freiberg GmbH, New York, NY, USA) in the polystyrene phantom were 0.70 (0.29)% higher on average than those in the SW phantom. The Exradin A16 (Standard Imaging, Middleton, WI, USA) dose rates were 0.76 (0.32)% higher in the polystyrene phantom. After msr correction factors were applied, there were no statistically significant differences in the A16 dose rates measured in the two phantoms; however, the T31010 dose rates were 0.72 (0.29)% higher in the polystyrene phantom. When the full widths at half maximum and penumbras of the msr field were compared, no significant differences between the two phantoms were observed, except for the penumbra in the Y-axis. However, the difference in the penumbra was smaller than variations among different sites. A polystyrene phantom developed for gamma knife dosimetry showed dosimetric performance comparable to that of a commercial SW phantom. In addition to its cost effectiveness, the polystyrene phantom removes air space around the detector. Additional simulations of the msr correction factors of the polystyrene phantom should be performed.

X-ray images typically contain complex background information and abundant small objects, posing significant challenges for object detection in security tasks. Most existing object detection methods rely on complex networks and high computational costs, which poses a challenge to implement lightweight models. This article proposes Fine-YOLO to achieve rapid and accurate detection in the security domain. First, a low-parameter feature aggregation (LPFA) structure is designed for the backbone feature network of YOLOv7 to enhance its ability to learn more information with a lighter structure. Second, a high-density feature aggregation (HDFA) structure is proposed to solve the problem of loss of local details and deep location information caused by the necked feature fusion network in YOLOv7-Tiny-SiLU, connecting cross-level features through max-pooling. Third, the Normalized Wasserstein Distance (NWD) method is employed to alleviate the convergence complexity resulting from the extreme sensitivity of bounding box regression to small objects. The proposed Fine-YOLO model is evaluated on the EDS dataset, achieving a detection accuracy of 58.3% with only 16.1 M parameters. In addition, an auxiliary validation is performed on the NEU-DET dataset, the detection accuracy reaches 73.1%. Experimental results show that Fine-YOLO is not only suitable for security, but can also be extended to other inspection areas.

Cultured meat (CM) is an alternative protein food and is produced by cultivating muscle satellite (stem) cells (MSCs) derived from livestock animals (bovine, chickens, and porcine) through myogenesis leading to generate muscle mass. Myostatin (MSTN) is well well-known negative regulator of myogenesis, and in the present study, in silico screening of natural compounds was performed to identify MSTN inhibitors. Interestingly, quercetin was found to inhibit MSTN (binding energy −7.40 kcal/mol), and this was further validated by a 100 ns molecular dynamics simulation. Quercetin was added to culture media to boost myogenesis, and its potent antioxidant property helped maintain media pH. Furthermore, quercetin increased the myotube thickness and length, increased MSC differentiation, and upregulated the gene and protein expressions of myoblast determination protein 1 (MYOD), Myogenin (MYOG), and Myosin heavy chains (MYH) in vitro. In addition, quercetin inhibited the activities of MSTN, activin receptor type-2B (ACVR2B), and SMAD2 and 3, and thus significantly enhanced MSC differentiation and myotube formation. Overall, this study shows that quercetin might be useful for enhancing large-scale CM production. It is hoped that this study provides a starting point for research in the CM area aimed to enhancing product quality, nutritional values, and the efficacy of large-scale production.

Skeletal muscle (SM) plays a vital role in energy and glucose metabolism by regulating insulin sensitivity, glucose uptake, and blood glucose homeostasis. Impaired SM metabolism is strongly linked to several diseases, particularly type 2 diabetes (T2D). Insulin resistance in SM may result from the impaired activities of insulin receptor tyrosine kinase, insulin receptor substrate 1, phosphoinositide 3-kinase, and AKT pathways. This review briefly discusses SM myogenesis and the critical roles that SM plays in insulin resistance and T2D. The pharmacological targets of T2D which are associated with SM metabolism, such as DPP4, PTB1B, SGLT, PPARγ, and GLP-1R, and their potential modulators/inhibitors, especially natural compounds, are discussed in detail. This review highlights the significance of SM in metabolic disorders and the therapeutic potential of natural compounds in targeting SM-associated T2D targets. It may provide novel insights for the future development of anti-diabetic drug therapies. We believe that scientists working on T2D therapies will benefit from this review by enhancing their knowledge and updating their understanding of the subject.

IntroductionIt is little known whether hyperlipidemia alone has adverse effects on the outcome of in vitro fertilization (IVF) in patients with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS).MethodsThe PCOS patients with body mass index (BMI) < 30 kg/m2 were performed IVF or intracytoplasmic sperm injection treatment, including 208 fresh cycles and 127 frozen embryo transfer (FET) cycles. All the patients were divided into hyperlipidemia and control groups, and embryo quality and pregnancy outcomes between the two groups were compared.ResultsIn the fresh cycles, total gonadotropin dosage in the control group was significantly lower than that in the hyperlipidemia group, and serum estradiol levels on trigger day were reversed (P < 0.05). The embryo fragment score was positively correlated with serum low-density lipoprotein level (r = 0.06, P < 0.05) and negatively with serum high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and lipoprotein A levels (r = -0.489 and -0.085, P < 0.01). Logistic regression analysis found that HDL was beneficial for clinical pregnancy (OR = 0.355, 95% CI: 0.135-0.938, P < 0.05). In the FET cycles, there were no differences in pulse index, systolic/diastolic ratio and serum estradiol and progesterone levels between the two groups, but resistance index in the hyperlipidemia group was significantly higher than that in the control group (P < 0.05).ConclusionHyperlipidemia may increase the dosage of gonadotropin and have adverse effect on the embryo quality, endometrial receptivity, and clinical outcomes of lean PCOS patients. It is recommended that the non-obese patients with hyperlipidemia and PCOS perform lipid-lowering treatment before undergoing embryo transfer.

Abstract Small humanin-like peptide 2 (SHLP2) is a mitochondrial-derived peptide implicated in several biological processes such as aging and oxidative stress. However, its functional role in the regulation of energy homeostasis remains unclear, and its corresponding receptor is not identified. Hereby, we demonstrate that both systemic and intracerebroventricular (ICV) administrations of SHLP2 protected the male mice from high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obesity and improved insulin sensitivity. In addition, the activation of pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC) neurons by SHLP2 in the arcuate nucleus of the hypothalamus (ARC) is involved in the suppression of food intake and the promotion of thermogenesis. Through high-throughput structural complementation screening, we discovered that SHLP2 binds to and activates chemokine receptor 7 (CXCR7). Taken together, our study not only reveals the therapeutic potential of SHLP2 in metabolic disorders but also provides important mechanistic insights into how it exerts its effects on energy homeostasis.

Abstract Objective The drug‐refractory epilepsy (DRE) in children is commonly observed but the underlying mechanisms remain elusive. We examined whether fatty acids (FAs) and lipids are potentially associated with the pharmacoresistance to valproic acid (VPA) therapy. Methods This single‐center, retrospective cohort study was conducted using data from pediatric patients collected between May 2019 and December 2019 at the Children's Hospital of Nanjing Medical University. Ninety plasma samples from 53 responders with VPA monotherapy (RE group) and 37 non‐responders with VPA polytherapy (NR group) were collected. Non‐targeted metabolomics and lipidomics analysis for those plasma samples were performed to compare the potential differences of small metabolites and lipids between the two groups.
