In this article, a diffusive predator-prey model with memory effect and predation-driven Allee effect is considered. Through eigenvalue analysis, the local asymptotic stability of positive constant steady-state solutions is analyzed, and it is found that memory delay affects the stability of positive constant steady-state solutions and induces Hopf bifurcation. The properties of Hopf bifurcating periodic solutions have also been analyzed through the central manifold theorem and the normal form method. Finally, our theoretical analysis results were validated through numerical simulations. It was found that both memory delay and predation-driven Allee effect would cause the positive constant steady-state solution of the model to become unstable, accompanied by the emergence of spatially inhomogeneous periodic solutions. Increasing the memory period will cause periodic oscillations in the spatial distribution of the population. In addition, there would also be high-dimensional bifurcation such as Hopf–Hopf bifurcation, making the spatiotemporal changes of the population more complex.

Abstract Background Environmental pollution seriously endangers people’s physical and mental health, especially the health of middle-aged and elderly people. Environmental pollution, trade openness, and population health are interconnected. Environmental pollution may have a nonlinear impact on health, and the impact of trade openness on the health effects of environmental pollution may not be a simple strengthening or weakening effect. However, few studies have used threshold effects model to explore the nonlinear mechanisms of environmental pollution’s impact on health in China. As a result, this study incorporates trade openness into the research framework on the health effects of environmental pollution, aiming to study the mechanism of environmental pollution on health. Methods Using the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) data from 2013 to 2020 and the data of 111 prefecture-level cities in China, we combine two-way fixed-effects models and threshold models to explore the effects of environmental pollution on the health of middle-aged and elderly people and the role of trade openness in the path of environmental pollution affecting health. Results Environmental pollution impairs the health of middle-aged and elderly people, and there is a single threshold effect and regional heterogeneity in this negative impact. Trade openness has the effect of first weakening and then strengthening in the inhibitory effect of environmental pollution on health. Conclusion The negative impact of environmental pollution on health has regional heterogeneity, and there is a nonlinear relationship between environmental pollution and the health of middle-aged and elderly people. The health effect of environmental pollution is mainly long-term effect, and trade openness has a threshold effect on the impact of environmental pollution on health. Therefore, instead of adopting a one-size-fits-all policy, environmental and economic policies should be customized according to the degree of environmental pollution, trade openness, and regional variations, so as to safeguard the health of middle-aged and elderly individuals through effective environmental governance.

Abstract Background With global climate change, the health threats of ambient high temperature have received widespread attention. However, latest spatio-temporal patterns of the non-communicable diseases (NCDs) burden attributable to high temperature have not been systematically reported. We aimed to analyze vulnerable areas and populations based on a detailed profile for the NCDs burden attributable to high temperature globally. Methods We obtained data from the Global Burden of Diseases (GBD) Study (2019) to describe the temporal and spatial patterns of NCDs burden attributable to high temperature globally from 1990–2019. Then we analyzed the differences by region, sex, and socio-demographic index (SDI). Finally, the age‑period‑cohort (APC) model was utilized to explore the age, period, and cohort effects of NCDs mortality caused by high temperature. Results In 2019, the number of deaths and Disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) from high-temperature-related NCDs was about 150,000 and 3.4 million globally, of which about 70% were in South Asia and North Africa and Middle East, and the burden was higher in men. Among 204 countries and territories, the highest age-standardized mortality rate (ASMR) and age-standardized DALY rate (ASDR) were observed in Oman and United Arab Emirates, respectively. The global burden showed an upward trend from 1990 to 2019, with an EAPC of 3.66 (95%CI: 3.14–4.18) for ASMR and 3.68 (95%CI: 3.16-4.21) for ASDR. Cardiovascular diseases were the main contributors to the global burden of high-temperature-related NCDs in 2019. The age and period effect in APC model showed an increasing trend globally. There was a significant negative correlation between SDI and both ASMR (r = -0.17) and ASDR (r = -0.20) from 1990 to 2019. Conclusion There was an increasing trend of the global burden of high-temperature-related NCDs. The burden was likely to be higher in males and the elderly, as well as in countries and regions with less economically and socially developed and in tropical climates. Surveillance and prevention measures should be implemented with a focus on these vulnerable areas and susceptible populations.

Objective Summarize the clinical and genetic characteristics of atypical Rett syndrome and developmental epileptic encephalopathy caused by IQSEC2 gene variation. Methods and Results From May 2020 to April 2022, Anhui Provincial Children's Hospital diagnosed and treated 4 children with atypical Rett syndrome and developmental epileptic encephalopathy caused by IQSEC2 gene variation, including 2 males and 2 females were a pair of identical twins. They all had comprehensive developmental delay before onset. At the age of 2 years, all cases gradually exhibited clinical manifestations of atypical Rett syndrome, such as frequent clapping, biting, sleep disorders (increased sleep or difficulty falling asleep), and grinding teeth, followed by developmental regression and seizures. The initial age of epilepsy was from 2 years and 2 months to 2 years and 10 months. All cases started with generalized tonic-clonic seizure, with epileptic spasm occurring between 2 and 11 months of course. Case 2, Case 3 and Case 4 were also accompanied by focal seizures. Four cases with VEEG background of 4-6 Hz θ wave, the VEEG during the interictal phase was a broad multifocal sharp slow complex wave. In Case 2, Case 3 and Case 4,MRI was abnormal, mainly with increased depth of cerebral hemispheric sulcus and gyrus. The whole exome sequencing suggested pathogenicity and possible pathogenic variations in the IQSEC2 gene, Case 1 and Case 2 were frameshift mutations of c. 608dup (p. Gln204Profs*35), while Case 3 and Case 4 were nonsense mutations of c.2231C > A (p.Ser744Ter) and c.2521C > T (p.Gln841Ter), respectively. The four mutation sites have not been reported domestically or internationally. All cases received treatment with multiple antiepileptic seizure medicine. The last follow-up age was from 4 years and 3 months to 6 years and 3 months. All cases were unable to walk alone and had no active language. There were no seizures in Case 1 for 3 years, occasional seizures in Case 2 and Case 4, and frequent seizures in Case 3. Conclusions IQSEC2 gene variation can manifest as atypical Rett syndrome, which can be accompanied by refractory epileptic spasms. Both males and females have severe phenotypes, and the severity of clinical phenotypes at the same mutation site varies. Our report enriches the variation spectrum and clinical phenotype spectrum of the IQSEC2 gene, expands the genetic spectrum of Rett syndrome and developmental epileptic encephalopathy, and provides value for the clinical diagnosis, treatment and subsequent research of this disease.

The long-term safety and effectiveness of once-daily tadalafil is crucial, but limited data are available in Chinese patients with erectile dysfunction (ED). In this post-marketing, multicenter, randomized, open-label trial with 2-year follow-up, 635 ED cases were randomized to receive daily oral tadalafil 2.5 mg or 5 mg for 3 months, of whom 580 continued once-daily tadalafil 5 mg for 21 months. Treatment-emergent adverse events in the 12-month and 24-month period were similar, with the most common being viral upper respiratory tract infection, upper respiratory tract infection, and headache. Significant improvement from baseline in the International Index of Erectile Function-Erectile Function (IIEF-EF) score was detected at month 12 (least squares mean [LSM] change: 7.9, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 7.5–8.4, P < 0.001) and was maintained to month 24 (LSM change: 8.6, 95% CI: 8.1–9.0, P < 0.001). The proportions of patients regaining normal erectile function (IIEF-EF score ≥26) were 43.7% and 48.0% at months 12 and 24, respectively. Global Assessment Questionnaire results showed improved erection function in 97.5% of patients and improved ability to engage in sexual activity in 95.9% of patients at month 12; these values were 96.1% and 95.0% at month 24, respectively. The quality of sexual life score based on the Sexual Life Quality Questionnaire (SLQQ) was increased by 52.2% at month 12 and by 55.3% at month 24 (both P < 0.001). The treatment satisfaction score determined by SLQQ (mean ± standard deviation) was 62.4 ± 21.0 at month 12 versus 65.9 ± 20.2 at month 24. Two-year daily application of tadalafil 5 mg in Chinese men with ED showed a favorable safety profile and durable improvement in sexual performance and satisfaction.

Although glycogen synthase kinase β (Gsk3β) has been shown to regulate tissue inflammation, whether and how it regulates inflammation resolution versus inflammation activation is unclear. In a murine liver, partial warm ischemia/reperfusion injury (IRI) model, we found that Gsk3β inhibitory phosphorylation increased at both the early-activation and late-resolution stages of the disease. Myeloid Gsk3β deficiency not only alleviated liver injuries, it also facilitated the restoration of liver homeostasis. Depletion of Kupffer cells prior to the onset of liver ischemia diminished the differences between the WT and Gsk3β-KO mice in the activation of liver IRI. However, the resolution of liver IRI remained accelerated in Gsk3β-KO mice. In CD11b-DTR mice, Gsk3β-deficient BM-derived macrophages (BMMs) facilitated the resolution of liver IRI as compared with WT cells. Furthermore, Gsk3β deficiency promoted the reparative phenotype differentiation in vivo in liver-infiltrating macrophages and in vitro in BMMs. Gsk3 pharmacological inhibition promoted the resolution of liver IRI in WT, but not myeloid MerTK-deficient, mice. Thus, Gsk3β regulates liver IRI at both activation and resolution stages of the disease. Gsk3 inactivation enhances the proresolving function of liver-infiltrating macrophages in an MerTK-dependent manner.

Background and aimsLiver ischemia reperfusion injury (IRI) remains an unresolved clinical problem. This study dissected roles of liver-resident macrophage Kupffer cells (KCs), with a functional focus on efferocytosis receptor T-cell immunoglobulin and mucin domain-containing protein-4 (TIM-4), in both the activation and resolution of IRI in a murine liver partial warm ischemia model.Approach and resultsFluorescence-activated cell sorting results showed that TIM-4 was expressed exclusively by KCs, but not infiltrating macrophages (iMФs), in IR livers. Anti-TIM-4 antibody depleted TIM-4+ macrophages in vivo, resulting in either alleviation or deterioration of liver IRI, which was determined by the repopulation kinetics of the KC niche with CD11b+ macrophages. To determine the KC-specific function of TIM-4, we reconstituted clodronate-liposome-treated mice with exogenous wild-type or TIM-4-deficient KCs at either 0 hour or 24 hours postreperfusion. TIM-4 deficiency in KCs resulted in not only increases in the severity of liver IRI (at 6 hours postreperfusion), but also impairment of the inflammation resolution (at 7 days postreperfusion). In vitro analysis revealed that TIM-4 promoted KC efferocytosis to regulate their Toll-like receptor response by up-regulating IL-10 and down-regulating TNF-α productions.ConclusionsTIM-4 is critical for KC homeostatic function in both the activation and resolution of liver IRI by efferocytosis.

Objective We hope to reveal the changing trends of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) burden attributable to particulate matter pollution (PM2.5) and its age, period and cohort effects in China, Japan and Korea.Design We analysed the trend of COPD disease burden attributable to PM2.5 from 1990 to 2019 based on the latest Global Burden of Disease Database (GBD 2019) using JoinPoint model and analysed the effect of age, period and cohort on COPD burden attributable to PM2.5 in China, Japan and Korea from 1990 to 2019 using age-period-cohort model (model).Setting GBD data from 1990 to 2019.Participants Data were publicly available and individuals were not involved.Main outcomes Outcomes included the age standardised mortality rate (ASMR), the age-standardised disability-adjusted life year (DALY), average annual per cent change (AAPC), net drift, local drift, longitudinal age curves, period (cohort) rate ratios, age (period, cohort) bias coefficient.Results From 1990 to 2019, the ASMR of COPD attributable to PM2.5 in China (AAPC=−5.862), Japan (AAPC=−1.715) and Korea (AAPC=−1.831) showed a downward trend. The age-standardised DALY of COPD attributable to PM2.5 in China (AAPC=−5.821), Japan (AAPC=−1.39) and Korea (AAPC=−1.239) showed a downward trend. Mortality of COPD attributable to PM2.5 increased slowly with age in Korea and Japan. Mortality of COPD attributable to PM2.5 in China decreased after rising (95% CI: 404.66 to 466.01). Mortality of COPD attributable to PM2.5 decreased over time in China and Korea, while it increased in Japan from 2015 to 2019. In China and Japan, mortality of COPD attributable to PM2.5 was approximately lower the later the birth, while in Korea it decreased after an increase (95% CI: 2.13 to 2.40) in the 1900–1910.Conclusions Most COPD burden attributable to PM2.5 is on the decline; COPD mortality attributable to PM2.5 both increased with age and decreased with time and cohort. Countries with high burden should develop targeted measures to control PM2.5.
