9. Cerium (III)‐MOF as a photocatalyst for hydrogen evolution from water splitting.

Abstract

Exploring the photocatalytic application of cerium‐based metal–organic frameworks (Ce‐MOFs) has attracted special interest due to the high abundance, low cost, and easy availability of Ce as well as the presence of low energy 4f orbitals and redox Ce (III)/(IV) couple. However, in contrast to the recent emerging study on the development of Ce (IV)‐MOFs as photocatalysts, there are few reports focusing on the photocatalytic performance of Ce (III)‐MOFs. Meanwhile, research on comparing the photocatalytic properties of rare‐earth lanthanide (Ln) ions has rarely been reported. Herein, a novel Ce (III)‐MOF with a formula of (Ce)6(BDC)9(DMF)6(H2O)3·(DMF)3, named CSUST‐4 (CSUST stands for Changsha University of Science and Technology), was successfully synthesized and characterized. The comprehensive analysis of the Ce‐O distance and Ce 3d spectra of CSUST‐4, mixed‐valence Ce (III/IV)‐MOF CSUST‐1, and Ce (IV)‐MOF CSUST‐3 demonstrated that the Ce‐O distance (O from the oxo bridge) can be used as an important reference to assign the valence state of Ce in Ce‐MOFs while the satellite peak around 916.0 eV attributed to Ce (IV) can be utilized to distinguish Ce (IV)‐containing Ce‐MOFs from Ce (III)‐MOFs. Furthermore, the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution (PHE) property of CSUST‐4 by water splitting was also studied, and by utilizing isostructural MOFs CSUST‐4‐Ln (Ln = La, Nd, Eu, Er, Yb) as platforms, the PHE performances of these Ln ions were compared, which evidenced that Ce is a suitable Ln ion to construct MOF materials for PHE in terms of cost and performance. This work contributes to the development of the Ce‐MOF field as well as sheds light on advancing Ce (III)‐MOFs toward potential photocatalytic application. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Cerium (IV)‐based metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs) are highly desirable due to their unique potential in fields such as redox catalysis and photocatalysis. However, due to the high reduction potential of CeIV species in solution, it is still a great challenge to synthesize CeIV‐MOFs with novel structures, which are extremely dominated by the hexanuclear Ce−O cluster inorganic building units (IBUs). Herein, a Ce−O IBU chain containing CeIV‐MOF, CSUST‐3 (CSUST: Changsha University of Science and Technology), was successfully prepared using the kinetic stabilization study of UiO‐66(Ce)‐NDC (H2NDC=2,6‐naphthalenedicarboxylic acid). Furthermore, owing to the superior redox activity, Lewis acidity and semiconductor‐like behavior owing to Ce4+, activated CSUST‐3 was demonstrated to be an excellent catalyst for CO2 chemical fixation. One‐pot synthesis of styrene carbonate from styrene and CO2 was achieved under mild conditions (1 atm CO2, 80 °C, and solvent free). Moreover, activated CSUST‐3 was shown to be a remarkable co‐catalyst‐free photocatalyst for overall water splitting (OWS), rendering 59 μmol g−1 h−1 of H2 and 22 μmol g−1 h−1 of O2 under simulated sunlight irradiation (Na2S‐Na2SO3 as sacrificial agent). Abstract

This article presents thermodynamic performance of a solar-power tower plant, DAHAN, which is constructed in Beijing as the first Chinese solar-power tower demonstration plant. Different from the existing solar-power tower plant, the DAHAN configuration includes a two-stage thermal-energy storage system consisting of a high-temperature oil accumulator and a low-temperature steam accumulator. The sensible heat and latent heat of steam are stored in the high- and low-temperature accumulators, respectively. The new plant is designed in such a way that during the operation the receiver can be connected to a steam turbine or energy-storage system. Software that simulates the performance of the plant has been developed and the thermodynamic performance of the plant was investigated. The results show that the annual thermal efficiency from solar to power of the plant can reach 8.35%. Abstract

An innovative system for the polygeneration of dimethyl ether (DME) and electricity was proposed in this paper. The system uses natural gas as the raw material. Polygeneration is sequential, with one-step and once-through DME synthesis. Syngas is made to react to synthesize DME first, and then the residual syngas is sent to the power generation unit as fuel. The exergy analysis from the view of cascade utilization was executed for individual generation and for polygeneration. The analysis results showed that both chemical energy and thermal energy in polygeneration were effectively utilized, and both chemical exergy destruction and thermal exergy destruction in polygeneration were decreased. The cause of the decrease in exergy destruction was revealed. The analysis showed that hydrogen-rich (natural gas-based) polygeneration was as desirable as carbon-rich (coal-based) polygeneration. The energy saving ratio of polygeneration was about 10.2%, which demonstrated that high efficiency natural gas-based polygeneration is attainable, and the cascade utilizations of both chemical energy and thermal energy are key contributors to the improvement of performance. Abstract

Focusing on the traditional principle of physical energy utilization, new integration concepts for combined cooling, heating and power (CCHP) system were identified, and corresponding systems were investigated. Furthermore, the principle of cascade utilization of both chemical and physical energy in energy systems with the integration of chemical processes and thermal cycles was introduced, along with a general equation describing the interrelationship among energy levels of substance, Gibbs free energy of chemical reaction and physical energy. On the basis of this principle, a polygeneration system for power and liquid fuel (methanol) production has been presented and investigated. This system innovatively integrates a fresh gas preparation subsystem without composition adjustment process (NA) and a methanol synthesis subsystem with partial-recycle scheme (PR). Meanwhile, a multi-functional energy system (MES) that consumes coal and natural gas as fuels simultaneously, and co-generates methanol and power, has been presented. In the MES, coal and natural gas are utilized synthetically based on the method of dual-fuel reforming, which integrates methane/steam reforming and coal combustion. Compared with conventional energy systems that do not consider cascade utilization of chemical energy, both of these systems provide superior performance, whose energy saving ratio can be as high as 10%–15%. With special attention paid to chemical energy utilization, the integration features of these two systems have been revealed, and the important role that the principle of cascade utilization of both chemical and physical energy plays in system integration has been identified.

Abstract

The indirect release of chemical energy of fuel is investigated, and a new machine is proposed to identify the cascade utilization of chemical energy of fuel more clearly. Based on the concept of energy level, the internal phenomenon of the indirect chemical energy release is disclosed, and the equations of energy level describing the utilization of chemical energy and thermal energy during the indirect chemical energy release process are obtained. From theoretical analysis, we find that the superiority of the indirect chemical energy release of fuel comes from the cascade utilization of the fuel's chemical energy. Moreover, the cascade utilization of chemical energy is verified by the investigation of CRGT(chemically recuperated gas turbine). As a result, the thermal exergy obtained from the chemical energy release of fuel increases by 2%-3%.
