Software technologies are used by programmers with diverse backgrounds. To fulfill programmers' need for information, enthusiasts contribute numerous learning resources that vary in style and content, which act as documentation for the corresponding technology. We interviewed 26 volunteer documentation contributors, i.e. documentors, to understand why and how they create such documentation. From a qualitative analysis of our interviews, we identified a total of sixteen considerations that documentors have during the documentation contribution process, along three dimensions, namely motivations, topic selection techniques, and styling objectives. We grouped related considerations based on common underlying themes, to elicit five software documentor mindsets that occur during documentation contribution activities. We propose a structure of mindsets, and their associated considerations across the three dimensions, as a framework for reasoning about the documentation contribution process. This framework can inform information seeking as well as documentation creation tools about the context in which documentation was contributed.

We provide the first ab-initio calculation of the Euclidean long-distance window of the isospin symmetric light-quark connected contribution to the hadronic vacuum polarization for the muon $g-2$ and find $a_\mu^{\rm LD,iso,conn,ud} = 411.4(4.3)(2.4) \times 10^{-10}$. We also provide the currently most precise calculation of the total isospin symmetric light-quark connected contribution, $a_\mu^{\rm iso,conn,ud} = 666.2(4.3)(2.5) \times 10^{-10}$, which is more than 4$\sigma$ larger compared to the data-driven estimates of Boito et al. 2022 and 1.7$\sigma$ larger compared to the lattice QCD result of BMW20., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures

Traceability, the ability to trace relevant software artifacts to support reasoning about the quality of the software and its development process, plays a crucial role in requirements and software engineering, particularly for safety-critical systems. In this chapter, we provide a comprehensive overview of the representative tasks in requirement traceability for which natural language processing (NLP) and related techniques have made considerable progress in the past decade. We first present the definition of traceability in the context of requirements and the overall engineering process, as well as other important concepts related to traceability tasks. Then, we discuss two tasks in detail, including trace link recovery and trace link maintenance. We also introduce two other related tasks concerning when trace links are used in practical contexts. For each task, we explain the characteristics of the task, how it can be approached through NLP techniques, and how to design and conduct the experiment to demonstrate the performance of the NLP techniques. We further discuss practical considerations on how to effectively apply NLP techniques and assess their effectiveness regarding the data set collection, the metrics selection, and the role of humans when evaluating the NLP approaches. In modern technology environments, raising users' privacy awareness is crucial. Existing efforts largely focused on privacy policy presentation and failed to systematically address a radical challenge of user motivation for initiating privacy awareness. Leveraging the Protection Motivation Theory (PMT), we proposed design ideas and categories dedicated to motivating users to engage with privacy-related information. Using these design ideas, we created a conceptual prototype, enhancing the current App Store product page. Results from an online experiment and follow-up interviews showed that our design effectively motivated participants to attend to privacy issues, raising both the threat appraisal and coping appraisal, two main factors in PMT. Our work indicated that effective design should consider combining PMT components, calibrating information content, and integrating other design elements, such as visual cues and user familiarity. A coherent perfect absorber is capable of completely absorbing input waves. However, the coherent perfect absorption severely depends on the superposition of the input waves, and the perfect absorption is sensitive to the disorder of the absorber. Thus, a robust incoherent perfect absorption, being insensitive to the superposition of input waves and the system disorder, is desirable for practical applications. Here, we demonstrate that the linearly independent destructive interference at the port connections removes the constraint on the coherent input. We propose an approach using the interplay between the loss and localization to form the incoherent perfect absorption. The resonant incidence from either port is completely absorbed. Furthermore, we utilize the lattice configuration supporting the flat band to demonstrate the disorder-immune incoherent perfect absorption. In our era of rapid technological advancement, the research landscape for writing assistants has become increasingly fragmented across various research communities. We seek to address this challenge by proposing a design space as a structured way to examine and explore the multidimensional space of intelligent and interactive writing assistants. Through a large community collaboration, we explore five aspects of writing assistants: task, user, technology, interaction, and ecosystem. Within each aspect, we define dimensions (i.e., fundamental components of an aspect) and codes (i.e., potential options for each dimension) by systematically reviewing 115 papers. Scientific open-source software (OSS) has greatly benefited research communities through its transparent and collaborative nature. Given its critical role in scientific research, ensuring the sustainability of such software has become vital. Earlier studies have proposed sustainability strategies for conventional scientific software and open-source communities. However, it remains unclear whether these solutions can be easily adapted to the integrated framework of scientific OSS and its larger ecosystem. This study examines the challenges and opportunities to enhance the sustainability of scientific OSS in the context of interdisciplinary collaboration, open-source community, and multi-project ecosystem. We conducted a case study on a widely-used software ecosystem in the astrophysics domain, the Astropy Project, using a mixed-methods design approach. This approach includes an interview with core contributors regarding their participation in an interdisciplinary team, a survey of disengaged contributors about their motivations for contribution, reasons for disengagement, and suggestions for sustaining the communities, and finally, an analysis of cross-referenced issues and pull requests to understand best practices for collaboration on the ecosystem level. Our study reveals the implications of major challenges for sustaining scientific OSS and proposes concrete suggestions for tackling these challenges.

We predict novel topological phases with broken time-reversal symmetry supporting the coexistence of opposite chiral edge states, which are fundamentally different from the photonic spin-Hall, valley-Hall, and higher-order topological phases. We find a fine-grained categorization of Chern insulators, their band topologies characterized by identical Chern number are completely different. Furthermore, we prove that different topologies cause zeros in their Bloch wavefunction overlaps, which imprint the band gap closing and appear at the degenerate points of topological phase transition. The Bloch wavefunction overlaps predict the reflection and refraction at a topological time boundary, and the overlap zeros ensure the existence of vanishing revival amplitude at critical times even though different topologies before and after the time boundary have identical Chern number. Our findings create new opportunities for topological metamaterials, uncover the topological feature hidden in the time boundary effect as a probe of topology, and open a venue for the exploration of the rich physics originating from the long-range couplings., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

A three-dimensional non-Hermitian Hamiltonian with parity-time symmetry can exhibit a closed exceptional surface (EP surface) in momentum space, which is a non-Hermitian deformation of the degeneracy line (DL). Since the degeneracy line lacks an internal space, the distributions of Berry curvature inside the EP surface becomes particularly intriguing. This paper studies the distributions taking a torus-like EP surface as an example. In a meridian cross-section, the Berry connection exhibits a vortex-like field with only angular components, while the Berry curvature is perpendicular to this cross-section; in a equatorial cross-section, the Berry curvature forms a closed curve surrounding the central genus. Both Berry connection and curvature converge along the coplanar axis and diverge at the surface. We find the Berry flux depends on the radius of the integration region and is not quantized inside the EP torus. Approaching the surface, the Berry flux tends to infinity and the dynamical phase oscillates violently. We point that the streamlines of Berry curvature can be used to estimate the zero or non-zero Berry flux. We generalize the above patterns to the case of EP surfaces with complex shapes, and present a proposal of realizing the EP surface in an electrical circuit. Although low-frequency quasiperiodic oscillations (LFQPOs) are commonly detected in the X-ray light curves of accreting black hole X-ray binaries, their origin still remains elusive. In this study, we conduct phase-resolved spectroscopy in a broad energy band for LFQPOs in MAXI J1820+070 during its 2018 outburst, utilizing Insight-HXMT observations. By employing the Hilbert-Huang transform method, we extract the intrinsic quasiperiodic oscillation (QPO) variability, and obtain the corresponding instantaneous amplitude, phase, and frequency functions for each data point. With well-defined phases, we construct QPO waveforms and phase-resolved spectra. By comparing the phase-folded waveform with that obtained from the Fourier method, we find that phase folding on the phase of the QPO fundamental frequency leads to a slight reduction in the contribution of the harmonic component. This suggests that the phase difference between QPO harmonics exhibits time variability. Phase-resolved spectral analysis reveals strong concurrent modulations of the spectral index and flux across the bright hard state. The modulation of the spectral index could potentially be explained by both the corona and jet precession models, with the latter requiring efficient acceleration within the jet. Furthermore, significant modulations in the reflection fraction are detected exclusively during the later stages of the bright hard state. These findings provide support for the geometric origin of LFQPOs and offer valuable insights into the evolution of the accretion geometry during the outburst in MAXI J1820+070., Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

Symmetry plays a fundamentally important role in physics. In this work, we find a conservation law, $S^{\dagger}(H_{c}^{\dagger})S(H_{c})=I$, which is valid for any non-Hermitian scattering center $H_c$. As a result, the reflections and transmissions of a non-Hermitian system $\left\{ r,t\right\}$ and its Hermitian conjugation system $\left\{ \bar{r},\bar{t}\right\} $ satisfy the conservation law $\bar{r}^{\ast}r+\bar{t}^{\ast}t=1$, instead of the energy conservation law that applies to incoming and outgoing waves in a Hermitian system. Consequently, the pseudo-Hermiticity of a non-Hermitian system ensures an energy-difference conservation. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the energy-difference conservation is respectively valid and invalid in two prototypical anti-$\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric systems, where the energy-difference conservation is protected by the pseudo-Hermiticity. The Aharonov-Bohm (AB) cage enables localized confinement with nondiffractive propagation for arbitrary excitation. In this study, we introduce an anti-parity-time (anti-$\mathcal{PT}$) symmetric imaginary coupling in a generalized Creutz ladder to construct a non-Hermitian AB cage with tunable flat-band energy. We investigate compact localized states and complete localization dynamics, and show that non-Hermiticity affects the localization probability distributions and increases the oscillation period of the AB cage dynamics. Non-Hermitian engineering of the decoupled core of the AB cage is the essential point in our proposal. Our approach is widely applicable to a more general situation and can facilitate the manipulation of localization in physics.

Fundamental neutron physics, combining precision measurements and theory, probes particle physics at short range with reach well beyond the highest energies probed by the LHC. Significant US efforts are underway that will probe BSM CP violation with orders of magnitude more sensitivity, provide new data on the Cabibbo anomaly, more precisely measure the neutron lifetime and decay, and explore hadronic parity violation. World-leading results from the US Fundamental Neutron Physics community since the last Long Range Plan, include the world's most precise measurement of the neutron lifetime from UCN$\tau$, the final results on the beta-asymmetry from UCNA and new results on hadronic parity violation from the NPDGamma and n-${^3}$He runs at the FNPB (Fundamental Neutron Physics Beamline), precision measurement of the radiative neutron decay mode and n-${}^4$He at NIST. US leadership and discovery potential are ensured by the development of new high-impact experiments including BL3, Nab, LANL nEDM and nEDM@SNS. On the theory side, the last few years have seen results for the neutron EDM from the QCD $\theta$ term, a factor of two reduction in the uncertainty for inner radiative corrections in beta-decay which impacts CKM unitarity, and progress on {\it ab initio} calculations of nuclear structure for medium-mass and heavy nuclei which can eventually improve the connection between nuclear and nucleon EDMs. In order to maintain this exciting program and capitalize on past investments while also pursuing new ideas and building US leadership in new areas, the Fundamental Neutron Physics community has identified a number of priorities and opportunities for our sub-field covering the time-frame of the last Long Range Plan (LRP) under development. For Open Source Software (OSS) projects, discussions in Issue Tracking Systems (ITS) serve as a crucial collaboration mechanism for diverse stakeholders. However, these discussions can become lengthy and entangled, making it hard to find relevant information and make further contributions. In this work, we study the use of summarization to aid users in collaboratively making sense of OSS issue discussion threads. We reveal a complex picture of how summarization is used by issue users in practice as a strategy to help develop and manage their discussions. Grounded on the different objectives served by the summaries and the outcome of our formative study with OSS stakeholders, we identified a set of guidelines to inform the design of collaborative summarization tools for OSS issue discussions. We then developed SUMMIT, a tool that allows issue users to collectively construct summaries of different types of information discussed, as well as a set of comments representing continuous conversations within the thread. To alleviate the manual effort involved, SUMMIT uses techniques that automatically detect information types and summarize texts to facilitate the generation of these summaries. A lab user study indicates that, as the users of SUMMIT, OSS stakeholders adopted different strategies to acquire information on issue threads. Furthermore, different features of SUMMIT effectively lowered the perceived difficulty of locating information from issue threads and enabled the users to prioritize their effort. Overall, our findings demonstrated the potential of SUMMIT, and the corresponding design guidelines, in supporting users to acquire information from lengthy discussions in ITSs. Comments within source code are essential for developers to comprehend the code's purpose and ensure its correct usage. However, as codebases evolve, maintaining an accurate alignment between the comments and the code becomes increasingly challenging. Recognizing the growing interest in automated solutions for detecting and correcting differences between code and its accompanying comments, current methods rely primarily on heuristic rules. In contrast, this paper presents DocChecker, a tool powered by deep learning. DocChecker is adept at identifying inconsistencies between code and comments, and it can also generate synthetic comments. This capability enables the tool to detect and correct instances where comments do not accurately reflect their corresponding code segments. We demonstrate the effectiveness of DocChecker using the Just-In-Time and CodeXGlue datasets in different settings. Particularly, DocChecker achieves a new State-of-the-art result of 72.3% accuracy on the Inconsistency Code-Comment Detection (ICCD) task and 33.64 BLEU-4 on the code summarization task against other Large Language Models (LLMs), even surpassing GPT 3.5 and CodeLlama. Exceptional point and spectral singularity are two types of singularity that are unique to non-Hermitian systems. Here, we report the high-order spectral singularity as a high-order pole of the scattering matrix for a non-Hermitian scattering system, and the high-order spectral singularity is a unification of the exceptional point and spectral singularity. At the high-order spectral singularity, the scattering coefficients have high-order divergence and the scattering system stimulates high-order lasing. The wave emission intensity is polynomially enhanced, and the order of the growth in the polynomial intensity linearly scales with the order of the spectral singularity. Furthermore, the coherent input controls and alters the order of the spectral singularity. The ability to resolve the dynamics of matter on its native temporal and spatial scales constitutes a key challenge and convergent theme across chemistry, biology, and materials science. The last couple of decades have witnessed ultrafast electron diffraction (UED) emerge as one of the forefront techniques with the sensitivity to resolve atomic motions. Increasingly sophisticated UED instruments are being developed that are aimed at increasing the beam brightness in order to observe structural signatures, but so far they have been limited to low average current beams. Here we present the technical design and capabilities of the HiRES (High Repetition Rate Electron Scattering) instrument, which blends relativistic electrons and high repetition rates to achieve orders of magnitude improvement in average beam current compared to the existing state-of-the-art UED instruments. The setup utilizes a novel electron source to deliver femtosecond duration electron pulses at up to MHz repetition rates for UED experiments. We provide example cases of diffraction measurements on solid-state and gas-phase samples, including both micro- and nanodiffraction modes, which showcase the potential of the instrument for novel UED experiments., Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures

Sketching out Graphical User Interface (GUI) layout is part of the pipeline of designing a GUI and a crucial task for the success of a software application. Arranging all components inside a GUI layout manually is a time-consuming task. In order to assist designers, we developed a method named GUILGET to automatically generate GUI layouts from positional constraints represented as GUI arrangement graphs (GUI-AGs). The goal is to support the initial step of GUI design by producing realistic and diverse GUI layouts. The existing image layout generation techniques often cannot incorporate GUI design constraints. Thus, GUILGET needs to adapt existing techniques to generate GUI layouts that obey to constraints specific to GUI designs. GUILGET is based on transformers in order to capture the semantic in relationships between elements from GUI-AG. Moreover, the model learns constraints through the minimization of losses responsible for placing each component inside its parent layout, for not letting components overlap if they are inside the same parent, and for component alignment. Our experiments, which are conducted on the CLAY dataset, reveal that our model has the best understanding of relationships from GUI-AG and has the best performances in most of evaluation metrics. Despite the potential of Large Language Models (LLMs) as writing assistants, they are plagued by issues like coherence and fluency of the model output, trustworthiness, ownership of the generated content, and predictability of model performance, thereby limiting their usability. In this position paper, we propose to adopt Norman's seven stages of action as a framework to approach the interaction design of intelligent writing assistants. We illustrate the framework's applicability to writing tasks by providing an example of software tutorial authoring. The paper also discusses the framework as a tool to synthesize research on the interaction design of LLM-based tools and presents examples of tools that support the stages of action. Topological edge states are the core of topological photonics. Here we introduce the antihelical edge states of time-reversal symmetric topological metals and propose a photonic realization in an anisotropic square lattice of coupled ring resonators, where the clockwise and counterclockwise modes play the role of pseudospins. The antihelical edge states robustly propagate across the corners toward the diagonal of the square lattice: The same (opposite) pseudospins copropagate in the same (opposite) direction on the parallel lattice boundaries; the different pseudospins separate and converge at the opposite corners. The antihelical edge states in the topological metallic phase alter to the helical edge states in the topological insulating phase under a metal-insulator phase transition. The antihelical edge states provide a unique manner of topologically-protected robust light transport applicable for topological purification. Maxwell fisheye lens was proposed to reach super-resolution with the addition of wave drain, and the interaction of multiple drains is theoretically predicted to improve subwavelength resolution further. We compute the standard Euclidean window of the hadronic vacuum polarization using multiple independent blinded analyses. We improve the continuum and infinite-volume extrapolations of the dominant quark-connected light-quark isospin-symmetric contribution and address additional sub-leading systematic effects from sea-charm quarks and residual chiral-symmetry breaking from first principles. We find $a_\mu^{\rm W} = 235.56(65)(50) \times 10^{-10}$, which is in $3.8\sigma$ tension with the recently published dispersive result of Colangelo et al., $a_\mu^{\rm W} = 229.4(1.4) \times 10^{-10}$, and in agreement with other recent lattice determinations. The reflectionless coherent light transport in the coupled resonator array is investigated in the presence of intra-resonator intermodal coupling between the clockwise and counterclockwise modes, which plays a constructive role for modulating the light flow rather than inducing the unwanted backscattering. The interplay between the intra-resonator intermodal coupling and the inter-resonator couplings enables the coherent resonant transmission (CRT) of the properly superposed injection constituted by the clockwise and counterclockwise modes. The superposition coefficients of the initial excitation determine the mode chirality of the resonant transmission. Sequentially experiencing the time-reversal process of CRT and the CRT realizes the perfect mode conversion that the mode chirality of the injection wave switches into the opposite after resonant transmission. Understanding the correct API usage sequences is one of the most important tasks for programmers when they work with unfamiliar libraries. However, programmers often encounter obstacles to finding the appropriate information due to either poor quality of API documentation or ineffective query-based searching strategy. To help solve this issue, researchers have proposed various methods to suggest the sequence of APIs given natural language queries representing the information needs from programmers. Among such efforts, Gu et al. adopted a deep learning method, in particular an RNN Encoder-Decoder architecture, to perform this task and obtained promising results on common APIs in Java. In this work, we aim to reproduce their results and apply the same methods for APIs in Python. Additionally, we compare the performance with a more recent Transformer-based method, i.e., CodeBERT, for the same task. Our experiment reveals a clear drop in performance measures when careful data cleaning is performed. Owing to the pretraining from a large number of source code files and effective encoding technique, CodeBERT outperforms the method by Gu et al., to a large extent., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures. The documentation practice for machine-learned (ML) models often falls short of established practices for traditional software, which impedes model accountability and inadvertently abets inappropriate or misuse of models. Recently, model cards, a proposal for model documentation, have attracted notable attention, but their impact on the actual practice is unclear. In this work, we systematically study the model documentation in the field and investigate how to encourage more responsible and accountable documentation practice. Our analysis of publicly available model cards reveals a substantial gap between the proposal and the practice. We then design a tool named DocML aiming to (1) nudge the data scientists to comply with the model cards proposal during the model development, especially the sections related to ethics, and (2) assess and manage the documentation quality. User forums of Open Source Software (OSS) enable end-users to collaboratively discuss problems concerning the OSS applications. Despite decades of research on OSS, we know very little about how end-users engage with OSS communities on these forums, in particular, the challenges that hinder their continuous and meaningful participation in the OSS community. Many previous works are developer-centric and overlook the importance of end-user forums. As a result, end-users' expectations are seldom reflected in OSS development. To better understand user behaviors in OSS user forums, we carried out an empirical study analyzing about 1.3 million posts from user forums of four popular OSS applications: Zotero, Audacity, VLC, and RStudio. Through analyzing the contribution patterns of three common user types (end-users, developers, and organizers), we observed that end-users not only initiated most of the threads (above 96% of threads in three projects, 86% in the other), but also acted as the significant contributors for responding to other users' posts, even though they tended to lack confidence in their activities as indicated by psycho-linguistic analyses. Moreover, we found end-users more open, reflecting a more positive emotion in communication than organizers and developers in the forums. Inspiration from design examples plays a crucial role in the creative process of user interface design. However, current tools and techniques that support inspiration usually only focus on example browsing with limited user control or similarity-based example retrieval, leading to undesirable design outcomes such as focus drift and design fixation. To address these issues, we propose the GANSpiration approach that suggests design examples for both targeted and serendipitous inspiration, leveraging a style-based Generative Adversarial Network. A quantitative evaluation revealed that the outputs of GANSpiration-based example suggestion approaches are relevant to the input design, and at the same time include diverse instances. A user study with professional UI/UX practitioners showed that the examples suggested by our approach serve as viable sources of inspiration for overall design concepts and specific design elements. Particle beam scattering is a conventional technique for detecting the nature of matter. We studied the scattering problem of a cluster connected to multiple leads. We established the connection between the eigenstate of the topological scattering center and the transmission and reflection amplitudes for the resonant scattering process. We discovered that as an application, this approach enables the detection of the edge state in the band gap for both Hermitian and non-Hermitian systems and the identification of the topology of a system. We investigated two types of Su-Schrieffer-Heeger chains as examples. In addition, we proposed a dynamic scheme through an evanescently coupled-waveguide array to detect the edge state on the basis of measured transmission intensity. The Hermitian systems possess unitary scattering; however, the Hermiticity is unnecessary for a unitary scattering although the scattering under the influence of non-Hermiticity is mostly non-unitary. Here we prove that the unitary scattering is protected by certain type of pseudo-Hermiticity and unaffected by the degree of non-Hermiticity. The energy conservation is violated in the scattering process and recovers after scattering. The subsystem of the pseudo-Hermitian scattering center including only the connection sites is Hermitian. These findings provide fundamental insights on the unitary scattering, pseudo-Hermiticity, and energy conservation; and are promising for the light propagation, mesoscopic electron transport, and quantum interference in the non-Hermitian systems., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures
