Abstract

Lead is a major component of Chinese ritual bronze vessels. Defining its sources and usage is thus highly significant to understanding the metal industries of the Chinese Bronze Age. A new, simplified method has been developed for examining data, thereby providing insight into diachronic change in the origins of lead sources used in artefacts. Application of this method to the existing corpus of lead isotope data from the Erlitou (c. 1600 BC) to the Western Zhou (c. 1045-771 BC) periods reveals changes in the isotope signal over this time frame. These changes clearly reflect shifts in the sourcing of ores and their use in metropolitan foundries. Further data are required to understand these complex developments. Abstract

The ritual institutionalization demonstrated in the bronze production at Erlitou and further developed during the Shang and Zhou periods that formed a distinctive feature of bronze civilizations. While exploring the path of the earliest state formation, we could consider why Erlitou was chosen from the unveiling of the Bronze Age in China. Much attention had been paid to archaeological, chronological, geographic, and climatic information in the existing studies, but the relationship between bronze metal resources and the formation of the Erlitou state needed more attention. Abstract

A first attempt to date the Kastrouli settlement at Desfina (Delphi Phokis) has been made by optical luminescence dating (OSL) on three ceramic and radiocarbon (C-14) of one bone sample. An initial archaeological reconnaissance of the partially looted site has produced some indication of use during late Helladic and later periods. Our four ages by luminescence and C-14 have shown that this site was used initially in Late Helladic period, and reused during the Middle Geometric, the Early Archaic and the Classical periods. Abstract

The earliest noodles have been dated to 4000 years ago, based on the discovery of remains at Lajia in north western China. The Lajia noodles were described as having been made by repeatedly stretching dough composed of millet flour with husks. In order to try to understand this manufacturing technique we carried out simulation experiments in noodle-making and documented morphological changes in noodle starches caused by cooking. Our research demonstrates that it is impossible to stretch pure millet dough into noodles. We conclude that the husk phytoliths and starch-like granules said to be from the Lajia noodle remains may actually not have been part of the noodles themselves. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
