Underwater exercise is becoming increasingly prevalent, during which brain function is necessary but is also at risk. However, no study has explored how prolonged exercise affect the brain in underwater environment. Previous studies have indicated that excessive exercise in common environment causes brain dysfunction but have failed to provide appropriate interventions. Numerous evidence has indicated the neuroprotective effect of hyperbaric oxygen preconditioning (HBO-PC). The objective of this study was to investigate the cognitive effect of prolonged underwater exercise (PUE) and to explore the potential neuroprotective effect of HBO-PC in underwater environment. Rats swimming for 3 h in a simulated hyperbaric chamber (2.0 ATA) was used to establish the PUE animal model and HBO-PC (2.5 ATA for 1, 3,5 times respectively) was administrated before PUE. The results demonstrated that PUE triggers anxiety-like behaviors, cognitive impairment accompanied by hippocampal dysfunction, microglia activation and neuroinflammation. Conversely, 3 HBO-PC rescued anxiety-like behaviors and cognitive impairment. Mechanistically, 3 HBO-PC reduced microglia activation and switched the activated microglia from a pro-inflammatory to neuroprotective phenotype. These findings illustrated that PUE induces anxiety-like behaviors and cognitive impairment and HBO-PC of proper frequency may provide an appropriate and less invasive intervention for protecting the brain in underwater exercise.

Abstract Background β-1,3-Galactosyltransferase-4 (B3GALT4), a member of the β-1,3-galactosyltransferase gene family, is essential to the development of many malignancies. However, its biological function in breast cancer is still unknown. Method Publically accessible datasets, as well as quantitative real-time PCR, western blot, and immunohistochemistry on our patient cohort were used to investigate the expression levels of B3GALT4 in breast cancer. The correlation of B3GALT4 expression with clinical histopathological data and mortality in breast cancer patients was investigated. The effects of B3GALT4 in breast cancer in vitro and in vivo were investigated. RNA-seq, western blot, autophagolysosomes, and the fluorescence intensity of LC3 were used to explore the effects of B3GALT4 on autophagy. Western blot and gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA) were used to identify the AKT/mTOR pathway. Results B3GALT4 was significantly overexpressed in breast cancer tissues and was positively correlated with some aspects of clinicopathological status and poor prognosis. B3GALT4 overexpression significantly promoted cell proliferation, migration, and invasion, both in vitro and in vivo. B3GALT4 inhibition suppressed breast cancer cell proliferation, migration, and invasion in vitro. Suppression of B3GALT4 triggered autophagy and hindered the AKT/mTOR signaling pathway. Conclusion According to the present research, B3GALT4 blocked autophagy via the AKT/mTOR pathway and accelerated the growth of breast cancer. B3GALT4 may be an effective target for patients with breast cancer.

ABSTRACT Objective The purpose of this study was to analyze the effectiveness of the Cancer Screening Program in Urban China (CanSPUC) in Hebei Province, 2016–2023. Methods A questionnaire for risk factors of lung, breast, upper gastrointestinal, liver, and colorectal cancers was administered to urban residents aged 40–74 years in five cities to assess their cancer risk. High‐risk participants were invited for screening and classified into five groups on the basis of the number of cancer types that were assessed to be high risk. The participation and positive outcome rates were analyzed. The incidence and the mortality of five types of cancer and all‐cause mortality of the screened and nonscreened participants were calculated via inverse probability weighting. Results A total of 237,975 eligible participants were enrolled in our study and 118,339 participants (49.94%) were assessed to be at high risk for one or more of the five cancer types. The number of screenings performed was 103,824, with a screening participation rate of 40.49%. Among the 57,315 screening participants, 9077 (15.84%) had positive cancer diagnoses and 871 (1.52%) were diagnosed with suspected cancer. Compared with the participants at high risk for a single cancer type, the participation and positive outcome rate increased by 45% and 71.5% in the participants at high risk for multiple cancer types. Compared with the non‐screened participants, the screened participants had a 27.0% decrease in mortality due to the five types of cancer and a 45.8% decrease in all‐cause mortality. Conclusion A combined screening program for multiple cancers could increase participation and positive outcome rates. It could also decrease the five types of cancer mortality and all‐cause mortality. Our findings highlight the effectiveness of combined screening for multiple cancers with limited health care resources, and may provide foundational evidence for the feasibility of conducting combined screening programs.

Abstract Risk assessment and categorization of terrorist attacks can assist enhance awareness of terrorism and give crucial information support for anti-terrorism efforts. This study utilizes quantitative approaches for the risk assessment and categorization of terrorist attacks. A total of 210,454 terrorist attacks that occurred worldwide from 1970 through 2020 were collected in the Global Terrorism Database, and 22 indicators related to the risk of terrorist attacks were selected. Then, the moment estimation theory and four comprehensive evaluation models were utilized to identify the top 10 riskiest terrorist attacks in the world. Furthermore, the five clustering analysis methods and three evaluation criteria were performed for the risk categorization of terrorist attacks, and the visual analysis was carried out using the kernel density estimation method. The research results have identified the top 10 riskiest global terrorist attacks, which were led by the September 11 terrorist attack event, along with their downward counterfactual events. The spatial distribution of global terrorist attack risk is primarily composed of four “turbulent cores” in the region of Central Asia, Middle East & North Africa, South Asia, and Central America & Caribbean. This study also provided insights and recommendations for anti-terrorism efforts. It has realized the risk assessment and categorization of terrorist attacks, aiding in the swift identification of its risk levels, and holds immense significance for safeguarding global national security and societal stability under new circumstances.

In recent years, reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is regarded as one of the promising technologies for 6G because of low power consumption, low cost and the ability to improve communication transmission rate. The progress in measurements for RIS-assisted wireless communication systems was reviewed, with the time-domain and frequency-domain measurement systems introduced. The prototype verification for large-scale fading models, small-scale fading models and channel reciprocity were summarized. Then, the advancements in measuring RIS hardware was reviewed, characteristics were concluded in power consumption, bit levels, polarization, and active RIS. Furthermore, the measurement on RIS coverage enhancement were summarized, introducing the impact of deployment locations, phase design, and effective rank on performance of coverage enhancement. Finally, future research directions and potential challenges faced by practical RIS measurements were discussed.

Abstract Rapid urbanization increases psychological stress among pedestrians, potentially heightening mental health disorders. This study examines the role of street walls' visual and textural characteristics in stress recovery, using Qingdao as a case study. Virtual reality is employed to simulate five distinct street walls: yellow mortar, brown stone, red brick, green plant, and white mortar. The stress recovery effectiveness of these walls was evaluated through psychological and physiological indicators from 48 young college students. Results indicated that street walls with warm tones, particularly brown stone, significantly aid stress recovery. Psychologically, Restorative Components Scale was highest for brown stone at 1.13. Physiologically, it was linked with notable reductions in diastolic and pulse pressure (decreases of 2.95 mmHg and 2.27 mmHg, respectively), and enhanced parasympathetic activity, as evidenced by the fastest decrease in low frequency/high frequency ratio (LF/HF), and increases in pNN50 and RR (0.14–2.01% and 1.57–11.81 ms, respectively). For urban design, the incorporation of warm-toned materials and natural elements like stone is recommended for their superior restorative benefits.

Carbonaceous materials in seismic fault zones may considerably influence seismic fault slip; however, the formation mechanism of carbonaceous materials remains unclear. In this study, we proposed a novel hypothesis for the formation of carbonaceous materials in fault gouge. Thus, we conducted a CO2 hydrogenation experiment in a high-temperature reactor at a co-seismic temperature, with fault gouge formed during the Wenchuan earthquake as the catalyst. Our experimental results demonstrate that carbonaceous materials in fault zones are formed on the fault gouge during the chemical reaction process, suggesting that the carbonaceous materials are possibly generated from the catalytic hydrogenation of CO2, followed by thermal cracking of its products. The results of this study provide a theoretical basis for understanding fault behavior and earthquake physics.

Gastric cancer is one of the most common malignant tumours, with limited treatment options and poor prognosis in its advanced stages. In recent years, breakthroughs in tumour immunotherapy have led to immune checkpoint inhibitors becoming a new class of clinical oncology drugs. Programmed death receptor-1 (PD-1) and programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) play significant roles in inhibiting T cell responses and tumour immune escape. PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitors can significantly improve the prognosis of patients with advanced gastric cancer. Moreover, the combination of administering PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitors along with chemotherapy, radiotherapy, targeted therapy, and other immunotherapies may further enhance therapeutic efficacy. However, some scientific issues need to be urgently resolved in the immunotherapy of gastric cancer, including the suboptimal efficacy of PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitor monotherapy, high incidence of immune-related adverse events, and the absence of definitive biomarkers for effectively screening treatment-sensitive populations. This article reviews the mechanism of action, therapeutic advances, adverse effects, and putative predictive biomarkers of PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitors in the treatment of advanced gastric cancer.

Abstract While Phorbol-12-myristate-13-acetate-induced protein 1 (Noxa/PMAIP1) assumes a pivotal role in numerous tumors, its clinical implications and underlying mechanisms of gastric cancer (GC) are yet enigmatic. In this investigation, our primary objective was to scrutinize the clinical relevance and potential mechanisms of Noxa in gastric cancer. Immunohistochemical analysis was conducted on tissue microarrays comprising samples from a meticulously characterized cohort of 84 gastric cancer patients, accompanied by follow-up data, to assess the expression of Noxa. Additionally, Noxa expression levels in gastric cancer clinical samples and cell lines were measured through quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) and Western blot analysis. The effect of Noxa expression on the prognosis of patients with gastric cancer was evaluated using Kaplan–Meier survival. Further insight into the role of Noxa in driving gastric cancer progression was gained through an array of experimental techniques, including cell viability assays (CCK8), plate cloning assays, transwell assays, scratch assays, and real-time cell analysis (RTCA). Potential upstream microRNAs (miRNAs) that might modulate Noxa were identified through rigorous bioinformatics analysis, substantiated by luciferase reporter assays and Western blot experiments. Additionally, we utilized RNA sequencing, qRT-PCR, and Western blot to identify proteins binding to Noxa and potential downstream target. Finally, we utilized BALB/c nude mice to explore the role of Noxa in vivo. Our investigation unveiled a marked downregulation of Noxa expression in gastric cancer and underscored its significance as a pivotal prognostic factor influencing overall survival (OS). Noxa overexpression exerted a substantial inhibitory effect on the proliferation, migration and invasion of GC cells. Bioinformatic analysis and dual luciferase reporter assays unveiled the capacity of hsa-miR-200b-3p to interact with the 3′-UTR of Noxa mRNA, thereby orchestrating a downregulation of Noxa expression in vitro, consequently promoting tumor progression in GC. Our transcriptome analysis, coupled with mechanistic validation, elucidated a role for Noxa in modulating the expression of ZNF519 in the Mitophagy-animal pathway. The depletion of ZNF519 effectively reversed the oncogenic attributes induced by Noxa. Upregulation of Noxa expression suppressed the tumorigenesis of GC in vivo. The current investigation sheds light on the pivotal role of the hsa-miR-200b-3p/Noxa/ZNF519 axis in elucidating the pathogenesis of gastric cancer, offering a promising avenue for targeted therapeutic interventions in the management of this challenging malignancy.

Land management strategies play a pivotal role in the sustainable development of a region. Integrating space syntax into the ecological–social perspective to assess habitat services and optimize multi-scenario simulations and evaluations is crucial for developing resilient strategies for the future. This study takes Lanzhou, a semi-arid region, as a case study, combining multi-model analysis to explore the relationship between habitat quality and spatial accessibility and to conduct habitat service zoning. The findings indicate that under four development scenarios, the ecological network generally shows a three-segment distribution. The factors that have the most significant impacts on cultivated land, forests, shrubs, construction land, and bare land are GDP, precipitation, temperature, population density, and NDVI, respectively. The ecological priority scenario features the most corridors, while the cultivated land protection scenario incurs the lowest construction costs. Across various analysis radii of space syntax, except for MED at a 6000 m radius, the ecological priority scenario exhibits excellent network accessibility. The coupling coordination degree of the four scenarios generally lies within a mild imbalance level, with a spatial distribution pattern characterized by “high in the west and low in the east”. Based on 10 types of habitat services, a priority management sequence for land and key governance towns was established, leading to the proposal of a “dual coordination” multi-center compact network layout model. This research not only enriches the theory of land ecology but also overcomes the shortcomings in land spatial planning, addresses the practical problems of land development transformation in Lanzhou, and offers new data support and ideas for the construction of ecological cities in semi-arid regions.

Existing deep learning-based hyperspectral anomaly detection methods typically perform anomaly detection by reconstructing a clean background. However, for the deep networks, there are many parameters that need to be adjusted. To reduce parameters of network and improve the performance of anomaly detection, a light CNN based on residual learning and background estimation was proposed. Different from traditional methods, the proposed method could directly learn anomaly features rather than background features. First, during the training stage, a background estimation method based on non-central convolution kernels was used to obtain the pseudo-background. Second, to purify the pseudo-background, a pair down-sampling method and a joint loss that combines cross-approximation background loss and consistency loss were proposed. Third, the anomaly matrix was obtained by the difference between the hyperspectral image (HSI) and the pseudo-background. Fourth, a light CNN with three layers was proposed to extract features of the anomaly matrix. Finally, during the prediction stage, anomaly detection results were calculated from the predicted anomaly matrix obtained by light CNN through the Mahalanobis distance. Experiments were conducted with multiple metrics on five real-world datasets. Compared with eight state-of-the-art methods, the proposed method achieved the superior performance in both qualitative and quantitative evaluations.

Post-thrombotic syndrome (PTS) is one of the most common long-term complications of lower extremity deep vein thrombosis (DVT). In order to study the long-term adverse prognosis of patients with DVT, explore the influencing factors for the prognosis of DVT, and provide a reliable reference for future research in the field of venous thrombosis, we collected and summarized information about the incidence of PTS, the PTS score and grading, the associated symptoms and drug-related adverse reactions in 501 patients with DVT. In our study, 54.1% of patients with DVT (271 of 501) experienced indications and manifestations of PTS, the male to female ratio was approximately 1:1. During the long-term follow up, the most common symptoms of PTS were anterior tibial edema and pain. Abstract Floral organ shape and size in cereal crops can affect grain size and yield, so genes that regulate their development are promising breeding targets. The lemma, which protects inner floral organs, can physically constrain grain growth; while the awn, a needle-like extension of the lemma, creates photosynthate to developing grain. Although several genes and modules controlling grain size and awn/lemma growth in rice have been characterized, these processes, and the relationships between them, are not well understood for barley and wheat. Here, we demonstrate that the barley E-class gene HvMADS1 positively regulates awn length and lemma width, affecting grain size and weight. Cytological data indicates that HvMADS1 promotes awn and lemma growth by promoting cell proliferation, while multi-omics data reveals that HvMADS1 target genes are associated with cell cycle, phytohormone signaling, and developmental processes. We define two potential targets of HvMADS1 regulation, HvSHI and HvDL, whose knockout mutants mimic awn and/or lemma phenotypes of mads1 mutants. Additionally, we demonstrate that HvMADS1 interacts with APETALA2 (A-class) to synergistically activate downstream genes in awn/lemma development in barley. Notably, we find that MADS1 function remains conserved in wheat, promoting cell proliferation to increase awn length. These findings extend our understanding of MADS1 function in floral organ development and provide insights for Triticeae crop improvement strategies.

In this paper, a dual-beam filtering patch antenna is proposed, wherein a symmetrical π-shaped metal vias-loaded dual-mode patch and a cross-shaped metal strip are utilized. The dual-mode patch resonator is realized through the loading of metal vias in the weak field region of mode TM21, which effectively moves mode TM01 closer to TM21. Using a cross-shaped metal strip to excite the dual-mode patch resonator not only provides a reflection zero and broadens the bandwidth, but also generates two radiation nulls through zero coupling, thus improving the frequency selectivity. Compared with reported dual-beam filtering patch antenna, the proposed design with the novel dual-mode patch resonator has a wide stopband, enhanced frequency selectivity, small size and a low profile. Measurements show that the antenna exhibits a 10-dB impedance matching bandwidth of 13% (3.23 GHz – 3.69 GHz), with two radiation nulls at 3.15 GHz and 3.88 GHz and a measured 15 dB stopband of 2.14 $f_{0}$ .

At present, most of the mature mechanical cavitation permeability improving devices in gas extraction need to use high-pressure water (gas), connecting rod or hydraulic cylinder as the power to drive the opening and closing of the knife arm, which requires higher power equipment in long boreholes. This paper develops a centrifugal mechanical knife which uses the centrifugal force generated by the rotation of the drill pipe as the opening power, and controls the opening angle of the tool arm by adjusting the rotation speed of the drill pipe. According to the preliminary test and mechanical numerical simulation analysis, the overall structure of the tool, internal rack, shaft pin, tool arm and other weak parts are optimized. The industrial test was carried out in the N1100 return air lane of a mine in Shanxi Province, and the construction time of mechanical cavitation and hydraulic cavitation and the pure amount of extraction were compared. The mechanical cavitation test hole achieved good cavitation and extraction effect, which verified the rationality and reliability of the centrifugal mechanical knife structure design. The equipment can reduce the dependence of cavitation reflection improvement on high pressure equipment, and the operation time of single hole is shortened by nearly 1/2, and the gas extraction amount is increased by 1.67 times compared with hydraulic cavitation.

There are some bottleneck problems in the pressure relief and antireflection technology of submerged water jet in a downward hole, such as weak impact force, low coal breaking efficiency, less coal cutting and poor adaptability. In this study, the idea and principle of coal breaking and antireflection of self-excited pulsed water jet in downward hole strengthened by the annular fluid were put forward in order to break the pressure holding effect at the bottom of the hole and the drag increase effect of water cushion, and improve the impact force and coal breaking efficiency of the submerged water jet. The high-efficiency modulation and coal-breaking characteristics of self-excited pulsed water jet enhanced by annular fluid were studied by using large eddy simulation, impact force test and impact kettle coal breaking experiment. Firstly, the physical model of an annular fluid-enhanced self-excited pulse nozzle suitable for the anti-reflection of downward holes in coal mines was established, and the nozzle structure parameters were optimized. Then a high-frequency impact force test system of a submerged pulsed jet and annular fluid-enhanced self-excited pulsed water jet nozzle was developed, and the impact force and flow field characteristics of the annular fluid-enhanced self-excited pulsed nozzle in the submerged environment were quantitatively analyzed. Finally, the coal breaking experiment system of submerged water jet was developed, and the coal breaking experiment of submerged water jet was carried out, which revealed the coal breaking characteristics of the annular fluid-enhanced self-excited pulsed water jet. The results show that under the engineering condition of a down-hole in the coal mines, the self-excited pulse water jet enhanced by annulus fluid can be effectively generated by the self-excited pulse nozzle with self-priming Helmholtz resonance cavity structure on both sides. The optimal nozzle structure parameters are as follows: the diameter of the upper nozzle d1=3 mm, the angle of collapse wall α=120°, the diameter of the lower nozzle d2=3.6 mm, the length of the oscillation cavity L=10.5 mm, the diameter of the oscillation cavity D=27 mm, the diameter of the inlet port d3 =4.2 mm. When the pump pressure is 10 MPa, the maximum amount of entrainment annulus water is 0.28 L/s, with an average of 0.19 L/s. When the pump pressure is the same, the dominant frequency of the annular fluid-enhanced self-excited pulsed water jet is close to that of the self-excited pulsed water jet. The dominant frequency range of the annular fluid-enhanced self-excited pulsed water jet is 253−285 Hz, while that of the self-excited pulsed water jet is 251−282 Hz. The peak impact force of the annular fluid-enhanced self-excited pulsed water jet is 1.05−1.08 times and 1.63−1.89 times higher than that of the self-excited pulsed water jet and the continuous jet, respectively. The average impact force is 1.09−1.16 times higher than that of the self-excited pulsed water jet, which reflects that the annular fluid-enhanced self-excited pulsed water jet can continuously generate a large impact force in the submerged state and has good pulsed jet characteristics. Under the condition of the same pump pressure and target distance, the damaging effect of annular fluid enhanced self-excited pulsed water jet is stronger than that of self-excited pulsed water jet and continuous water jet on coal samples. The annular fluid enhanced self-excited pulsed water jet has a good erosion effect on coal body, and about 88.65% of the coal slag particle size is below 8 mm. When the pump pressure is 10 MPa, the target distance is 10d1, and the erosion time is 10 s, the jet has the best erosion effect on coal samples, with an erosion depth of 47.32 mm and the erosion volume of 15.7 cm3. The research results can not only solve the bottleneck problem of a downward hole water jet in the coal mines, but also have the advantages of less excavation and cost saving. It is expected to replace and exceed the pressure relief and permeability enhancement of the upward hole water jet. It has broad application prospects in the gas disaster prevention and coalbed methane development of coal mines.

Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (iCCA) is a highly fatal malignancy with rapidly increasing incidence and mortality worldwide. Currently, gemcitabine-based systemic chemotherapy is the main clinical therapeutic regimen; however, its efficacy is poor, and its mechanism has not been elucidated. In this study, we use a Seahorse Extracellular Flux analyser to measure glycolysis capacity (extracellular acidification rate, ECAR) and oxygen consumption rate (OCR). The glucose uptake or lactic acid content is detected, and the effects of saikosaponin D, an active compound derived from Bupleuri Radix (a traditional Chinese medicine for soothing the liver and relieving depression), on gemcitabine cytotoxicity in norepinephrine-stimulated iCCA cells are analysed. We find that adrenergic signaling plays a fundamental role in chronic stress-induced therapeutic resistance in iCCA. Norepinephrine (NE) and epinephrine (E) enhance the proliferation of iCCA cells and interfere with the response to gemcitabine through activation of the β2-adrenergic receptor (ADRB2). Furthermore, we find that NE upregulates the expressions of several drug efflux-related genes (such as ABCG2 and MDR1) and promotes glycolysis in iCCA cells. In addition, saikosaponin D reverses the poor response of iCCA cells to gemcitabine by downregulating ADRB2 level. Furthermore, saikosaponin D inhibits drug efflux and glycolysis in iCCA cells by regulating the expressions of MDR1, ABCG2, HK2, and GLUT1. Collectively, saikosaponin D enhances the antitumor effect of gemcitabine by controlling glucose metabolism and drug efflux by inhibiting the ADRB2 signaling. Therefore, the combination of saikosaponin D and gemcitabine may be a potential therapeutic strategy for the treatment of iCCA.

Abstract Real-time monitoring of heart rate (HR), i.e., extraction of heart rate variability (HRV), plays an important role in diagnosis and prevention of cardiovascular diseases. Compared with traditional contact monitoring devices, the use of continuous wave (CW) Doppler radar to monitor HRV does not require contact and is not sensitive to light and temperature, which makes it more and more popular. To monitor the HRV based on CW Doppler radar, the time window must be shortened to less than 5 s, which will lead to the spectrum leakage and degrade the measurement accuracy of HRV. To solve this problem, a custom CW Doppler radar has been developed in an integrated fashion on a single PCB, whose transmitting frequency and power of the radar are 24 GHz and 3 dBm, respectively. Furthermore, four frequency interpolation algorithms are introduced to compare their extraction accuracy. Experiments are performed on three subjects, and results show that the Quinn algorithm can obtain best HRV extraction results compared with other algorithms. Specially, the average HRV extraction error is 3.61% using the Quinn algorithm.

In flowering plants, the inflorescence meristem (IM) provides founder cells to form successive floral meristems, which are precursors of fruits and seeds. The activity and developmental progression of IM are thus critical for yield production in seed crops. In some cereals, such as rice (Oryza sativa) and maize (Zea mays), the size of undifferentiated IM, which is located at the inflorescence apex, is positively associated with yield traits such as spikelet number. However, the relationship between IM size and yield-related spike traits remains unknown in the Triticeae tribe. Here we report that IM size has a negative correlation with yield traits in barley (Hordeum vulgare). Three FASCIATED EAR (FEA) orthologs, HvFEA2, HvFEA3, and HvFEA4, regulate IM size and spike morphogenesis and ultimately affect yield traits. Three HvFEAs genes are highly expressed in developing spikes, and all three loss-of-function mutants exhibit enlarged IM size, shortened spikes, and reduced spikelet number, which may lead to reduced grain yield. Natural variations identified in HvFEAs indicate selection events during barley domestication. We further reveal that HvFEA4, as a transcription factor, potentially targets multiple pathways during reproductive development, including transcriptional control, phytohormone signaling, and redox status. The roles of barley FEA genes in limiting IM size and promoting spikelet formation suggest the potential of increasing yield by manipulating IM activity.

A wideband dual-beam dielectric resonator antenna (DRA) with substrate integration capability was proposed for millimeter-wave (mm-wave) applications. The four rows of air vias along the x-direction and two extended rectangular patches could shift the undesirable radiation mode upward and move the conical-beam radiation mode downward, respectively. Thus, the TE211 mode and the TE411 mode of the patch-loaded perforated rectangular substrate integrated dielectric resonator (SIDR) supporting the dual-beam radiation can be retained in the operating band, and their radiation can be improved by the air vias along the y-direction. The T-shaped line coupled dual-slot structure could excite the above two modes, and a dual-slot mode supporting dual-beam radiation could also work. Then, a wideband DRA with a stable dual-beam radiation angle can be achieved, and its impedance matching can be improved by two air slots on two sides. Compared with the state-of-the-art dual-beam antennas, the proposed antenna shows a wider bandwidth, a higher radiation efficiency, and the substrate integration capability of DRA, making it more suitable for mm-wave applications. For demonstration, a 1 × 4 array was designed with the 10 dB impedance matching bandwidth of 41.2% and the directions of the dual beams between ±30° and ±35°.

A bidirectional quasi-endfire patch antenna with a low elevation angle has promising applications for wireless communication systems that are vehicle-based, airborne, and shipborne. In this paper, the shortened patch resonators and open patch resonator are integrated to form a bidirectional quasi-endfire patch antenna with low elevation angle. The open patch resonator operates with a TM20 mode to realize bidirectional radiation. The two shortened patch resonators operate with a TM01 mode coupled with a TM20 mode to control the phase difference between them at a suitable angle, so that the shortened patch resonators act as directors to tilt the dual beams toward the endfire direction and achieve low elevation angle. Compared with reported patch antennas with dual beams, the proposed antenna has the lowest elevation angle and a compact structure. For demonstration purposes, an antenna prototype operating at 3.5 GHz is fabricated and measured, exhibiting a low elevation angle of ±28°, a −10 dB impedance matching bandwidth from 3.44 GHz to 3.61 GHz, and a size of 1.36 λ0 × 0.57 λ0 with a profile of 0.036 λ0. A prototype with two pair of shortened patch directors further reduces the elevation angle to ±19° with the size of 2.3 λ0 × 0.57 λ0.

BackgroundCOVID-19 screening is an effective nonpharmaceutical intervention for identifying infected individuals and interrupting viral transmission. However, questions have been raised regarding its effectiveness in controlling the spread of novel variants and its high socioeconomic costs. Therefore, the optimization of COVID-19 screening strategies has attracted great attention. ObjectiveThis review aims to summarize the evidence and provide a reference basis for the optimization of screening strategies for the prevention and control of COVID-19. MethodsWe applied a methodological framework for scoping reviews and the PRISMA-ScR (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Extension for Scoping Reviews) checklist. We conducted a scoping review of the present publications on the optimization of COVID-19 screening strategies. We searched the PubMed, Web of Science, and Elsevier ScienceDirect databases for publications up to December 31, 2022. English publications related to screening and testing strategies for COVID-19 were included. A data-charting form, jointly developed by 2 reviewers, was used for data extraction according to the optimization directions of the screening strategies. ResultsA total of 2770 unique publications were retrieved from the database search, and 95 abstracts were retained for full-text review. There were 62 studies included in the final review. We summarized the results in 4 major aspects: the screening population (people at various risk conditions such as different regions and occupations; 12/62, 19%), the timing of screening (when the target population is tested before travel or during an outbreak; 12/62, 19%), the frequency of screening (appropriate frequencies for outbreak prevention, outbreak response, or community transmission control; 6/62, 10%), and the screening and detection procedure (the choice of individual or pooled detection and optimization of the pooling approach; 35/62, 56%). ConclusionsThis review reveals gaps in the optimization of COVID-19 screening strategies and suggests that a number of factors such as prevalence, screening accuracy, effective allocation of resources, and feasibility of strategies should be carefully considered in the development of future screening strategies.

BackgroundArtificial intelligence (AI), conceived in the 1950s, has permeated numerous industries, intensifying in tandem with advancements in computing power. Despite the widespread adoption of AI, its integration into medicine trails other sectors. However, medical AI research has experienced substantial growth, attracting considerable attention from researchers and practitioners. ObjectiveIn the absence of an existing framework, this study aims to outline the current landscape of medical AI research and provide insights into its future developments by examining all AI-related studies within PubMed over the past 2 decades. We also propose potential data acquisition and analysis methods, developed using Python (version 3.11) and to be executed in Spyder IDE (version 5.4.3), for future analogous research. MethodsOur dual-pronged approach involved (1) retrieving publication metadata related to AI from PubMed (spanning 2000-2022) via Python, including titles, abstracts, authors, journals, country, and publishing years, followed by keyword frequency analysis and (2) classifying relevant topics using latent Dirichlet allocation, an unsupervised machine learning approach, and defining the research scope of AI in medicine. In the absence of a universal medical AI taxonomy, we used an AI dictionary based on the European Commission Joint Research Centre AI Watch report, which emphasizes 8 domains: reasoning, planning, learning, perception, communication, integration and interaction, service, and AI ethics and philosophy. ResultsFrom 2000 to 2022, a comprehensive analysis of 307,701 AI-related publications from PubMed highlighted a 36-fold increase. The United States emerged as a clear frontrunner, producing 68,502 of these articles. Despite its substantial contribution in terms of volume, China lagged in terms of citation impact. Diving into specific AI domains, as the Joint Research Centre AI Watch report categorized, the learning domain emerged dominant. Our classification analysis meticulously traced the nuanced research trajectories across each domain, revealing the multifaceted and evolving nature of AI’s application in the realm of medicine. ConclusionsThe research topics have evolved as the volume of AI studies increases annually. Machine learning remains central to medical AI research, with deep learning expected to maintain its fundamental role. Empowered by predictive algorithms, pattern recognition, and imaging analysis capabilities, the future of AI research in medicine is anticipated to concentrate on medical diagnosis, robotic intervention, and disease management. Our topic modeling outcomes provide a clear insight into the focus of AI research in medicine over the past decades and lay the groundwork for predicting future directions. The domains that have attracted considerable research attention, primarily the learning domain, will continue to shape the trajectory of AI in medicine. Given the observed growing interest, the domain of AI ethics and philosophy also stands out as a prospective area of increased focus.

Abstract Background For North Chinese lung cancer patients, there is limited study on the distribution of air pollution and smoking related features based on analyses of large-scale, high-quality population datasets. The aim of the study was to fully analyze risk factors for 14604 Subjects. Methods Participants and controls were recruited in 11 cities of North China. Participants’ basic information (sex, age, marital status, occupation, height, and weight), blood type, smoking history, alcohol consumption, history of lung-related diseases and family history of cancer were collected. PM2.5 concentration data for each year in each city of the study area from 2005 to 2018 were extracted based on geocoding of each person's residential address at the time of diagnosis. Demographic variables and risk factors were compared between cases and matched controls using a univariate conditional logistic regression model. Multivariate conditional logistic regression models were applied to estimate the odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for risk factors in univariate analysis. The nomogram model and the calibration curve were developed to predict lung cancer probability for the probability of lung cancer. Results There was a total of 14604 subjects, comprising 7124 lung cancer cases and 7480 healthy controls included in the study. Marital status of unmarried persons, people with a history of lung-related disease, corporate personnel and production /service personnel were protective factors for lung cancer. People younger than 50 years old, people who were smoking and quit smoking, people who had been drinking consistently, people with family history of cancer and PM2.5 exposure were proven to be a risk factor for lung cancer. The risk of lung cancer varied with sex, smoking status and air pollution. Consistent alcohol consumption, persistent smoking and smoking quit were risk factors for lung cancer in men. By smoking status, male was risk factor for lung cancer in never smokers. Consistent alcohol consumption added risk for lung cancer in never smokers. The combined effects of PM2.5 pollution exposure and ever smoking aggravated the incidence of lung cancer. According to air pollution, lung cancer risk factors are completely different in lightly and heavily polluted areas. In lightly polluted areas, a history of lung-related disease was a risk factor for lung cancer. In heavily polluted areas, male, consistent alcohol consumption, a family history of cancer, ever smokers and smoking quit were all risk factors for lung cancer. A nomogram was plotted and the results showed that PM2.5 was the main factor affecting the occurrence of lung cancer. Conclusions The large-scale accurate analysis of multiple risk factors in different air quality environments and various populations, provide clear directions and guidance for lung cancer prevention and precise treatment.

Abstract Background Disease stage at diagnosis and molecular subtypes are the main determinants of breast cancer treatment strategies and prognosis. We aimed at examining the disparities and factors associated with the stage at diagnosis among the molecular subtypes in breast cancer patients in China. Methods We identified patients with first primary breast cancer diagnosed between January 1, 2016, and December 31, 2017, from 23 hospitals in 12 provinces in China. We analyzed the proportion of non‐early‐stage (stages II–IV) breast cancer cases based on the family history of breast cancer, body mass index (BMI), insurance status, and molecular subtypes. Multivariable analyses were used to estimate the factors associated with non‐early‐stage diagnosis among the molecular subtypes. We further compared these estimates with that in the United States using the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database. Results A total of 9398 Chinese were identified with first primary invasive breast cancer. Of the 8767 patients with known stages, the human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)‐enriched subtype had the highest proportion of stages II–IV (76.6%) patients, followed by triple‐negative breast cancer (73.2%), luminal B (69.9%), and luminal A (62.3%). The percentage of non‐early‐stage patients was higher in women with overweight or obesity than in those with a body mass index (BMI)

To present an analysis and application method of ship traffic flow considering navigation rules in narrowing channel, which can make a reasonable judgment for decision makers to improve navigation efficiency and ensure navigation safety. In this paper, the relationship model between narrowing channel and ships is analyzed from the perspective of navigation. Based on the constraint condition of navigation safety domain, the navigation rules are formulated for different positions of channel, and the mutual influence of ships at the narrowed position of channel is analyzed emphatically. The establishment scheme of traffic flow model of narrowing channel with navigation safety distance is put forward by using cellular automata algorithm. According to the measured data, the correctness of the ship traffic flow model of narrowing channel is verified. The experimental results show that the relative error rates are between −2.29% and 10.89%, which indicating that the method can better conform to the actual ship traffic flow characteristics of channel narrowing and has strong application value.

Abstract The shaped charge jet formation of a Zr-based amorphous alloy and the applicability of different numerical algorithms to describe the jet formed were experimentally and numerically investigated. X-ray experiments were performed to study jet characteristics. The numerical results for the Zr-based amorphous alloy jet formed via the Euler and smooth particle hydrodynamics (SPH) algorithms were compared and analyzed using the Autodyn hydrocode. Particle motion was examined based on material properties. The Zr-based amorphous alloy formed a noncohesive jet driven by an 8701 explosive. Both the Euler and SPH algorithms achieved high accuracy for the determination of jet velocity. When the improved Johnson-Holmquist constitutive model (JH-2) was used, numerical results confirmed the model’s suitability for the Zr-based amorphous alloy. The Euler algorithm effectively reflected jet shape within a short computing time, whereas the SPH algorithm was highly suitable for showing the shape of the jet tail within a long computing time. In the 3D Euler model, the flared jet mouth indicated radial particle dispersion; however, in the 2D model, particle dispersion in the head was directly observed by using the JH-2 material model. The brittle fracture of the material reduced the proportion of particles near the liner apex forming a jet. Furthermore, a new method in which stagnation pressure was used to predict jet formation and its coherence was proposed since the collapse angle was difficult to obtain.

Abstract To evaluate the implementations of Cancer Screening Program in Urban Hebei and to model the cost-effectiveness of a risk-based breast Cancer Screening Program. Women aged 40–74 years were invited to participate the Cancer Screening Program in Urban Hebei form 2016 to 2020 by completing questionnaires to collect information about breast cancer exposure. Clinical screening including ultrasound and mammography examination were performed. We developed a Markov model to estimate the lifetime costs and benefits, in terms of quality-adjusted life years (QALY), of a high-risk breast Cancer Screening Program. Nine screening strategies and no screening were included in the study. The age-specific incidence, transition probability data and lifetime treatment costs were derived and adopted from other researches. Average cost-effectiveness ratios (ACERs) were estimated as the ratios of the additional costs of the screening strategies to the QLYG compared to no screening. Incremental cost-effectiveness ratios (ICERs) were calculated based on the comparison of a lower cost strategies to the next more expensive and effective strategies after excluding dominated strategies and extendedly dominated strategies. ICERs were used to compare with a willingness-to-pay (WTP) threshold. Sensitivity analysis was explored the influence factors. A total of 84,029 women completed a risk assessment questionnaire, from which 20,655 high-risk breast cancer females were evaluated, with a high-risk rate of 24.58%. There were 13,392 high-risk females completed the screening program, with participation rate was 64.84%. Undergoing ultrasound, mammography and combined screening, the suspicious positive detection rates were 15.00%, 9.20% and 19.30%, and the positive detection rates were 2.11%, 2.76% and 3.83%, respectively. According to the results by Markov model, at the end of 45 cycle, the early diagnosis rates were 55.53%, 60.68% and 62.47% underwent the annual screening by ultrasound, mammography and combined, the proportion of advanced cancer were 17.20%, 15.85% and 15.36%, respectively. Different screening method and interval yield varied. In the exploration of various scenarios, annual ultrasound screening is the most cost-effective strategy with the ICER of ¥116,176.15/QALY. Sensitivity analyses demonstrated that the results are robust. Although it was not cost effective, combined ultrasound and mammography screening was an effective strategy for higher positive detection rate of breast cancer. High-risk population-based breast cancer screening by ultrasound annually was the most cost-effective strategy in Urban Hebei Province.

Abstract Background The Omicron variant of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) spreads rapidly and insidiously. Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) screening is an important means of blocking community transmission in China, but the costs associated with testing are high. Quarantine capacity and medical resources are also threatened. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate different screening strategies to balance outbreak control and consumption of resources. Methods A community network of 2000 people, considering the heterogeneities of household size and age structure, was generated to reflect real contact networks, and a stochastic individual-based dynamic model was used to simulate SARS-CoV-2 transmission and assess different whole-area nucleic acid screening strategies. We designed a total of 87 screening strategies with different sampling methods, frequencies of screening, and timings of screening. The performance of these strategies was comprehensively evaluated by comparing the cumulative infection rates, the number of tests, and the quarantine capacity and consumption of medical resource, which were expressed as medians (95% uncertainty intervals, 95% UIs). Results To implement COVID-19 nucleic acid testing for all people (Full Screening), if the screening frequency was four times/week, the cumulative infection rate could be reduced to 13% (95% UI: 1%, 51%), the miss rate decreased to 2% (95% UI: 0%, 22%), and the quarantine and medical resource consumption was lower than higher-frequency Full Screening or sampling screening. When the frequency of Full Screening increased from five to seven times/week (which resulted in a 2581 increase in the number of tests per positive case), the cumulative infection rate was only reduced by 2%. Screening all people weekly by splitting them equally into seven batches could reduce infection rates by 73% compared to once per week, which was similar to Full Screening four times/week. Full Screening had the highest number of tests per positive case, while the miss rate, number of tests per positive case, and hotel quarantine resource consumption in Household-based Sampling Screening scenarios were lower than Random Sampling Screening. The cumulative infection rate of Household-based Sampling Screening or Random Sampling Screening seven times/week was similar to that of Full Screening four times/week. Conclusions If hotel quarantine, hospital and shelter hospital capacity are seriously insufficient, to stop the spread of the virus as early as possible, high-frequency Full Screening would be necessary, but intermediate testing frequency may be more cost-effective in non-extreme situations. Screening in batches is recommended if the testing capacity is low. Household-based Sampling Screening is potentially a promising strategy to implement. Graphical Abstract

High-precision infrared maritime target detection plays an important role in early warning, monitoring, search, and rescue. The methods of decomposing the original image into low-rank background components and sparse target components show favorable detection performance. However, the strong edge interference is also sparse and may be mistakenly taken as target components, resulting in a large number of false alarms and reducing detection accuracy. To solve the problem, we propose an iterative corner and edge weights method based on tensor decomposition. The original image is decomposed into the background component, target component, and additional strong edge interference component. The corner strength is designed as the weight of the target component, and the edge strength is designed as the weight of the interference component in order to separate the target and interference more accurately. And the two weights are designed to be updated during each iteration of the model solution to reduce the impact of initial imprecise weights on detection results. Compared with 8 advanced baseline methods in 10 datasets, the proposed method demonstrates outstanding results and shows engineering application prospects.

Abstract Background This study aimed to evaluate bone response to micro-arc oxidation coated titanium alloy implants containing Ag. Methods 144 titanium alloy implants were prepared by machine grinding and divided into three treatment groups as following, SLA group: sand-blasting and acid-etched coating; MAO group: micro-arc oxidation without Ag coating; MAO + Ag group: micro-arc oxidation containing Ag coating. Surface characterization of three kind of implants were observed by X-ray diffraction, energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer, scanning electron microscopy, High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscope and roughness analysis. The implants were inserted into dog femurs. 4, 8 and 12 weeks after operation, the bone response to the implant to the bone was evaluated by push-out experiment, histological and fluorescent labeling analysis. Results MAO + Ag group consisted of a mixture of anatase and rutile. Ag was found in the form of Ag2O on the surface. The surface morphology of MAO + Ag group seemed more like a circular crater with upheaved edges and holes than the other two groups. The surface roughness of MAO and MAO + Ag groups were higher than SLA group, but no statistical difference between MAO and MAO + Ag groups. The contact angles in MAO + Ag group was smallest and the surface free energy was the highest among three groups. The maximum push-out strength of MAO and MAO + Ag groups were higher than SLA group at all time point, the value of MAO + Ag group was higher than MAO group at 4 and 8 weeks. Scanning electron microscopy examination for the surface and cross-section of the bone segments and fluorescent labeling analysis showed that the ability of bone formation and osseointegration in MAO + Ag group was higher than that of the other two groups. Conclusion The micro-arc oxidation combination with Ag coating is an excellent surface modification technique to posse porous surface structure and hydrophilicity on the titanium alloy implants surface and exhibits desirable ability of osseointegration.

Electrochemical reduction of CO2 to valuable products, powered by renewable energy, provides a promising strategy for reducing our dependence on fossil fuels. But up to now, no technology has been implemented for large-scale industrial applications. Without massive utilization of CO2, many vital practical problems, such as reducing CO2 emissions, storing renewable energy, and alleviating environmental pollution, cannot be resolved through this route. Herein, we propose a novel electrolyzer for CO2 electro-reduction, which is separated into three chambers by a bipolar membrane and a cation exchange membrane. In the cathodic chamber, CO2 is reduced to CO in organic electrolytes. In the anodic chamber, Cl- is oxidized to Cl2 in NaCl aqueous solution. In the central chamber, NaOH is obtained. The generated CO and Cl2 can be used as feedstock to produce phosgene (CO+Cl2 =COCl2). Through this route, phosgene can be produced from CO2 and NaCl, with NaOH generated as a byproduct. By substantially increasing the product value, we can promote CO2 electro-reduction technology to industrial applications.

Dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) have received a lot of attention as a regenerative medicine tool with strong immunomodulatory capabilities. The excessive inflammatory response involves a variety of immune cells, cytokines, and has a considerable impact on tissue regeneration. The use of DPSCs for controlling inflammation for the purpose of treating inflammation-related diseases and autoimmune disorders such as supraspinal nerve inflammation, inflammation of the pulmonary airways, systemic lupus erythematosus, and diabetes mellitus is likely to be safer and more regenerative than traditional medicines. The mechanism of the anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects of DPSCs is relatively complex, and it may be that they themselves or some of the substances they secrete regulate a variety of immune cells through inflammatory immune-related signaling pathways. Most of the current studies are still at the laboratory cellular level and animal model level, and it is believed that through the efforts of more researchers, DPSCs/SHED are expected to be transformed into excellent drugs for the clinical treatment of related diseases.

ABSTRACT The 2022 World Health Organization guidelines recommend use of two core anti-tuberculosis (TB) drugs, bedaquiline (BDQ) and clofazimine (CFZ), for treatment of drug-resistant (DR)-TB. However, several mutated Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) genes, conferring BDQ and CFZ resistance, have been reported that predominantly arose from sporadic mutations that have not been comprehensively characterized. Herein, MTB clinical isolates collected from drug-susceptible (DS)-, multidrug-resistant (MDR)-, and extensively drug-resistant (XDR)-TB patients were cultured in vitro with BDQ or CFZ to generate progeny strains with resistance to these drugs. Progeny strains exposed to CFZ exhibited increased CFZ minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) that exceeded MIC increases of BDQ-exposed progeny strains. Notably, mmpR and pepQ mutations accounted for 83% and 17% of BDQ-induced spontaneous gene mutations, respectively, and 86% and 14% of CFZ-induced spontaneous gene mutations, respectively. Analyses of predicted mutation-induced changes in amino acid sequences and structures of MmpR and PepQ mutants revealed several point mutations affected sequence conversation and functionality as an underlying mechanism for observed acquired BDQ/CFZ resistance. Moreover, our results revealed differences in patterns of BDQ- and CFZ-induced acquired spontaneous mutations that may enhance our understanding of MTB BDQ/CFZ-resistance mechanisms. IMPORTANCE This study of MTB drug resistance mechanisms revealed patterns of spontaneous MTB mutations associated with acquired BDQ and CFZ resistance that arose after clinical MTB isolates were cultured in vitro with BDQ or CFZ. Results of protein sequence and structural analyses provided insights into potential mechanisms underlying associations between MTB gene mutations and DR phenotypes. Taken together, these results revealed differences in acquired BDQ and CFZ resistance mechanisms as a new perspective that may enhance our understanding of BDQ/CFZ resistance mechanisms and facilitate the development of new methods for detecting MTB drug resistance genes.

Series superconducting Josephson junctions (JJs), as terahertz (THz) mixers, have attracted increasing attentions due to their advantages in solving the saturation problem of superconducting mixers, achieving higher mixing harmonics and higher sensitivity in THz band. However, the normal-state resistances of the series JJs are so low that there exists an impedance mismatch between the coupled antenna and the JJs. In this paper, a meander embedding travelling-wave bowtie antenna is proposed for a series of bicrystal JJs. With this antenna, not only the problem of impedance mismatch can be solved, but also more series JJs can be inserted into the antenna. Five and even seven series JJs in the meander match the proposed antenna well. Furthermore, combined current distribution, far-field radiation patterns and parameter study are investigated in the numerical simulation to analyze this antenna.

Abstract Background The continuous mutation of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 has made the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic complicated to predict and posed a severe challenge to the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics and Winter Paralympics held in February and March 2022. Methods During the preparations for the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, we established a dynamic model with pulse detection and isolation effect to evaluate the effect of epidemic prevention and control measures such as entry policies, contact reduction, nucleic acid testing, tracking, isolation, and health monitoring in a closed-loop management environment, by simulating the transmission dynamics in assumed scenarios. We also compared the importance of each parameter in the combination of intervention measures through sensitivity analysis. Results At the assumed baseline levels, the peak of the epidemic reached on the 57th day. During the simulation period (100 days), 13,382 people infected COVID-19. The mean and peak values of hospitalized cases were 2650 and 6746, respectively. The simulation and sensitivity analysis showed that: (1) the most important measures to stop COVID-19 transmission during the event were daily nucleic acid testing, reducing contact among people, and daily health monitoring, with cumulative infections at 0.04%, 0.14%, and 14.92% of baseline levels, respectively (2) strictly implementing the entry policy and reducing the number of cases entering the closed-loop system could delay the peak of the epidemic by 9 days and provide time for medical resources to be mobilized; (3) the risk of environmental transmission was low. Conclusions Comprehensive measures under certain scenarios such as reducing contact, nucleic acid testing, health monitoring, and timely tracking and isolation could effectively prevent virus transmission. Our research results provided an important reference for formulating prevention and control measures during the Winter Olympics, and no epidemic spread in the closed-loop during the games indirectly proved the rationality of our research results. ABSTRACT Importance Bacteremia tuberculosis (TB) is a severe form of extrapulmonary TB. Studies assessing bacteremia TB in children are limited, especially for HIV‐negative children. Objective To explore the detailed clinical features of the bacteremia TB in children under 18 years of age. Methods We reviewed the clinical records of the patients retrospectively and collected the strains isolated from their blood cultures. We used mycobacterial interspersed repetitive‐unit‐variable‐number tandem‐repeat (MIRU‐VNTR) to characterize the bacterial genotypes and alamarBlue to determine their drug susceptibility profiles. Polymerase chain reactions and DNA sequencing were used to identify drug‐resistant mutations. Results There were 13 pediatric bacteremia TB patients, 10 of whom were diagnosed with Bacillus Calmette–Guérin (BCG) bacteremia TB. Thirteen patients aged from 0.30 to 11.58 years were enrolled, of whom 76.92% were boys. All had fevers before hospitalization, and 76.92% had respiratory symptoms. All had received BCG vaccinations, and 46.15% had adverse post‐vaccination reactions. Compared with Mycobacterium tuberculosis, BCG bacteremia was more likely to appear in younger children. Patients with BCG bacteremia had primary immunodeficiency diseases, and lower CD4, IgA, and IgE levels. Interpretation Bacteremia TB was rapidly fatal in a large proportion of the immunodeficient children. Because classic findings may not be diagnostically specific, a high level of clinical suspicion is required, especially for patients with certain types of immunosuppression. Studies are needed to develop rapid diagnostic tests and to determine the value of empirical therapy in childhood bacteremia TB.

Few studies have considered the impacts of sample size and sample ratio of presence and absence points on the results of random forest (RF) testing. We applied this technique for the prediction of the spatial distribution of snail habitats based on a total of 15,000 sample points (5,000 presence samples and 10,000 control points). RF models were built using seven different sample ratios (1:1, 1:2, 1:3, 1:4, 2:1, 3:1, and 4:1) and the optimal ratio was identified via the Area Under the Curve (AUC) statistic. The impact of sample size was compared by RF models under the optimal ratio and the optimal sample size. When the sample size was small, the sampling ratios of 1:1, 1:2 and 1:3 were significantly better than the sample ratios of 4:1 and 3:1 at all four levels of sample sizes (p0.05). The sample ratio of 1:2 appeared to be optimal for a relatively large sample size with the lowest quartile deviation. In addition, increasing the sample size produced a higher AUC and a smaller slope and the most suitable sample size found in this study was 2400 (AUC=0.96). This study provides a feasible idea to select an appropriate sample size and sample ratio for ecological niche modelling (ENM) and also provides a scientific basis for the selection of samples to accurately identify and predict snail habitat distributions.

Influenza virus, with a global distribution, diverse animal host range and multiple virus subtypes, has caused several pandemics. To better prepare for the emergence of new subtypes and the possible threat of the next pandemic, the global status of animal influenza must be defined and documented. We created a global database of animal influenza events by searching scientific databases and the primary literature on animal influenza-related events up to and including 2016. The temporal, spatial and host distribution of animal influenza and the diversity of influenza subtypes in different regions were analyzed. A total of 70,472 records and 4712 events of animal influenza throughout the world were identified. Events involving subtypes H5N2, H7N7 and H7N9 were relatively constant, with a slow upward trend during the past decade. Asia was the region with the most clusters of events. Poultry was the main host reported in Asia and Africa, and wild birds in Europe and North America. We found that wild birds carried a very rich array of virus subtypes, a warning for the possible generation of reassortment viruses with pandemic potential. Influenza virus subtype diversity - a risk for virus reassortment - was greatest in Asia, North America and Europe. Our database provides a comprehensive overview of the historical and current status of animal influenza events throughout the world. Influenza surveillance needs to be strengthened in some countries and regions to prevent the emergence of new subtypes. Importantly, improvement of the global influenza surveillance system and structures to enable sharing of surveillance data is very much needed to prepare for the next pandemic.

Abstract Background The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) epidemic, considered as the worst global public health event in nearly a century, has severely affected more than 200 countries and regions around the world. To effectively prevent and control the epidemic, researchers have widely employed dynamic models to predict and simulate the epidemic’s development, understand the spread rule, evaluate the effects of intervention measures, inform vaccination strategies, and assist in the formulation of prevention and control measures. In this review, we aimed to sort out the compartmental structures used in COVID-19 dynamic models and provide reference for the dynamic modeling for COVID-19 and other infectious diseases in the future. Main text A scoping review on the compartmental structures used in modeling COVID-19 was conducted. In this scoping review, 241 research articles published before May 14, 2021 were analyzed to better understand the model types and compartmental structures used in modeling COVID-19. Three types of dynamics models were analyzed: compartment models expanded based on susceptible-exposed-infected-recovered (SEIR) model, meta-population models, and agent-based models. The expanded compartments based on SEIR model are mainly according to the COVID-19 transmission characteristics, public health interventions, and age structure. The meta-population models and the agent-based models, as a trade-off for more complex model structures, basic susceptible-exposed-infected-recovered or simply expanded compartmental structures were generally adopted. Conclusion There has been a great deal of models to understand the spread of COVID-19, and to help prevention and control strategies. Researchers build compartments according to actual situation, research objectives and complexity of models used. As the COVID-19 epidemic remains uncertain and poses a major challenge to humans, researchers still need dynamic models as the main tool to predict dynamics, evaluate intervention effects, and provide scientific evidence for the development of prevention and control strategies. The compartmental structures reviewed in this study provide guidance for future modeling for COVID-19, and also offer recommendations for the dynamic modeling of other infectious diseases. Objective: To explore the protective effects and mechanism of Zuogui Jiangtang Jieyu Formula (左归降糖解郁方, ZGJTJYF) on hippocampal neurons in rats of diabetes complicated with depression (DD) via the TRP/KYN metabolic pathway. Methods: (i) In vivo experiments: 60 specified pathogen free (SPF) grade male Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were randomly divided into six groups with 10 rats in each groups: control, DD model, positive (1.8 mg/kg fluoxetine + 0.18 g/kg metformin), high-dose ZGJTJYF (ZGJTJYF-H, 40.500 g/kg ZGJTJYF), middle-dose ZGJTJYF (ZGJTJYF-M, 20.250 g/kg ZGJTJYF), and low-dose ZGJTJYF (ZGJTJYF-L, 10.125 g/kg ZGJTJYF) groups. Except for the control group, other groups were established DD model by high-fat emulsion intake with single tail vein streptozotocin (STZ) and four weeks of chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS). All drug administration groups were treated by gavage during CUMS modeling, and the control and model groups were given equal amount of distilled water. After four weeks, the serum levels of blood glucose and glycosylated hemoglobin were measured to determine the hypoglycemic effect of ZGJTJYF. Moreover, the open field test and Morris water maze test were performed to evaluate the antidepressant effect of ZGJTJYF. Changes in 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) level were detected via high-performance liquid chromatography with electrochemical detection (HPLC-ECD); the levels of tryptophan (TRP), kynurenine (KYN), and indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase (IDO) in the hippocampus were detected using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA); the protein expression levels of synaptophysin (SYN) and postsynaptic density material-95 (PSD-95) were detected via immunohistochemistry (IHC); and the protein expression levels of N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NR) 2A and NR2B were detected using Western blot. (ii) In vitro experiments: five SPF grade SD pregnant rats (E16 – 18) were used to obtain primary hippocampal neurons (Ne), six SD new-born rats were used to collected primary astrocytes (As) and microglia (MG), and to establish a Ne-As-MG co-culture system. All co-culture systems were divided into six groups: control (PBS), model [150 mmol/L glucose + 200 μmol/L corticosterone (G&P) + PBS], blank (G&P + blank serum), positive (G&P + positive drug-containing serum), ZGJTJYF (G&P + ZGJTJYF serum), and 1-methyl-D-tryptophan (1-MT, IDO inhibitor) (G&P + 1-MT) groups. After 18 h of intervention by corresponding treatment, immunofluorescence was used to analyze the protein expression levels of SYN, PSD-95, NR2A, and NR2B; ELISA was performed to measure the levels of interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α , and TRP/KYN metabolic pathway-related factors [TRP, KYN, kynurenine acid (KYNA), quinolinic acid (QUIN)]. Results: (i) In vivo experimental results showed that ZGJTJYF-M and ZGJTJYF-L significantly improved the elevated blood glucose state of DD rats (P < 0.01 and P < 0.05, respectively); ZGJTJYF-H, ZGJTJYF-M, and ZGJTJYF-L increased their autonomous activity, learning, and memory ability (P < 0.01, P < 0.01, and P < 0.05, respectively). Moreover, the levels of 5-HT and TRP were significantly increased (P < 0.01), and the levels of KYN and IDO were significantly decreased in the hippocampus (P < 0.01) of rats after ZGJTJYF-M treatment. The protein expression levels of SYN and PSD-95 were significantly upregulated in hippocampal neurons (P < 0.01), while the abnormal activation of NR2A and NR2B was markedly inhibited in hippocampus (P < 0.05) of rats after ZGJTJYF-M treatment. (ii) In vitro experimental results showed that ZGJTJYF-containing serum significantly increased the protein expression levels of SYN and PSD-95 in hippocampal neurons (P < 0.01), decreased the levels of IL-1β (P < 0.01), IL-6 (P < 0.05), TNF-α (P < 0.01), IDO (P < 0.05), KYN (P < 0.05), and QUIN (P < 0.01), and increased the levels of TRP and KYNA (P < 0.01) in the simulated DD state. ZGJTJYF also had an significantly inhibitory effect on the abnormal activation of NR2A and NR2B in neurons (P < 0.05) in a stimulated DD state. Conclusion: ZGJTJYF can effectively improve 5-HT deficiency in the hippocampus of rats by inhibiting IDO expression and regulating the TRP/KYN metabolic pathway, and it has a favorable protective effect on hippocampal neuron injury caused by DD. Therefore, ZGJTJYF is an effective potential therapeutic drug for the prevention and treatment of DD.

In the standard Bell experiment, two parties perform local projective measurements on a shared pair of entangled qubits to generate nonlocal correlations. However, these measurements completely destroy the entanglement, rendering the post-measurement state unable for subsequent use. For a long time, it was believed that only unsharp measurements can be used to share quantum correlations. Remarkably, recent research has shown that classical randomness assisted projective measurements are sufficient for sharing nonlocality (Steffinlongo and Tavakoli 2022 Phys. Rev. Lett. 129 230402). Here, by stochastically combining no more than two different projective measurement strategies, we report an experimental observation of double Clauser–Horne–Shimony–Holt inequality violations with two measurements in a sequence made on each pair of maximally and partially entangled polarization photons. Our results reveal that the double violation achieved by partially entangled states can be 11 standard deviations larger than that achieved by maximally entangled ones. Our scheme eliminates the requirement for entanglement assistance in previous unsharp-measurement-based sharing schemes, making it experimentally easier. Our work provides possibilities for sharing other types of quantum correlations in various physical systems with projective measurements.

Abstract The purpose of our investigation is to explore the putative molecular mechanisms underpinning LINC00858 involvement in colon cancer. The expression of LINC00858 in TCGA data was identified using the GEPIA website. Colon cancer cancerous tissues were clinically collected. The expression of LINC00858, RAD21, and PCNP in colon tissues or cells was determined using RT-qPCR. The interactions among LINC00858, RAD21, and PCNP promoter region were determined by means of RNA pull down, RIP, and ChIP assays. Cell proliferative, apoptotic, invasive, and migrated capabilities were evaluated. Western blot was conducted to determine RAD21, PCNP, phosphorylated (p)-STAT3, STAT3, p-STAT5 and STAT5 and apoptosis related proteins. A nude mouse model of colon cancer was constructed and tumorigenesis of colon cancer cells was observed. LINC00858 was upregulated in cancerous tissues and cells. LINC00858 recruited the transcription factor RAD21. Overexpression of LINC00858 promoted the binding of RAD21 and PCNP promoter region, which increased the expression of PCNP. Silencing of RAD21 or PCNP reversed the promoting effect of LINC00858 on the disease initiation and development. PCNP silencing inhibited proliferative ability and promoted apoptotic ability of cancerous cells via STAT3/5 inhibition, which was reversed by colivelin-activated STAT3. In vivo experiments further verified that LINC00858 enhanced the tumorigenicity of colon cancer cells in vivo by regulating the RAD21/PCNP/STAT3/5 axis. It indicated the promoting role of LINC00858 in colon cancer progression though activating PCNP-mediated STAT3/5 pathway by recruiting RAD21.

Due to the strong ability of recognizing electromagnetic (EM) environment and adaptively control of EM waves, the intelligent metasurfaces have received great attention recently. However, the intelligent metasurface with frequency recognition for adaptive manipulation of the EM waves has not been studied. Here, we propose a frequency-recognition intelligent metasurface to precisely control the spatial EM waves under the agile frequencies with the help of a real-time radio-frequency sensor and an adaptive feedback control system. An active meta-atom is presented to reach 2 bit phase coding and 1 bit amplitude coding capacities to control the amplitude and phase independently. Experimental results demonstrate that the metasurface can recognize different frequency of the incoming wave with very high resolution, and can adaptively realize the self-defined multiple frequency agilities to manipulate the reflected EM waves without any human participation. As example, the intelligent metasurface with frequency recognition can adaptively operate wave absorption at 5.36 GHz, reflection to normal direction at 5.38 GHz, deflection to −30° at 5.40 GHz, random diffusion at 5.42 GHz, and deflection to +33° at 5.44 GHz by detecting the incoming frequency at the resolution of 0.02 GHz.

Abstract Background Propranolol, a nonselective beta‐adrenergic blocker, has long been used as one of the standard treatments for essential tremor (ET). Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) has also been used for a long time as a substitution therapy for ET patients. Objective The main aim of this study was to evaluate the antitremor effect of 1‐Hz (low‐frequency) cerebellar rTMS and compare it to the use of propranolol in ET patients. Methods In this single‐blinded, randomized, controlled pilot study, a total of 38 patients with ET were randomized into two groups. One group (n = 20) received 1200 pulses of 1‐Hz rTMS at an intensity of 90% of the resting motor threshold to the bilateral cerebellar region for 10 days. Another group (n = 18) received oral propranolol for 30 days. The initial dose was 30 mg/day, which was increased to 60 mg/day after 5 days, then to 90 mg/day on the 11th day, and continued thereafter for 20 days. The Fahn–Tolosa–Marin (FTM) clinical scale was assessed at baseline and at days 5, 10, and 30 to evaluate tremor severity, specific motor tasks, and functional disability. Results Low‐frequency rTMS of the cerebellum significantly improved tremor severity, specific motor tasks (writing, spiral drawing, and pouring), and FTM total scores on days 10 and 30. Nevertheless, we found no significant difference in functional disability at any point in time (p > .05). There were no statistically significant differences in FTM Part A, Part B, Part C scores and total scores of patients in propranolol group on days 5 and 10 compared with before treatment (p > .05). However, FTM total scores and FTM Part A, Part B, and Part C scores were significantly improved for patients when the dose of propranolol was 90 mg/day on day 30. Our study showed that there was no statistically significant difference in the total FTM scores and FTM Part A, Part B, and Part C scores between rTMS and propranolol on days 5, 10, and 30 (p > .05). Conclusion We conclude that both cerebellar low‐frequency rTMS and propranolol could be effective treatment options for patients with ET, but it is not clear which method is more effective.
