A mixed-spin (5/2, 3/2) Ising model is established to describe the antiferroelectric/ferroelectric (AFE/FE) BiFeO3/Co bilayer structure. We study the effects of the crystal field, exchange coupling and external longitudinal electric field on the dielectric properties of the bilayer based on Monte Carlo simulation. We illustrate the temperature dependence of polarization, susceptibility, internal energy and specific heat of the system in detail. As well, we depict the phase diagram and point out the rule of the blocking temperature with various parameters. In particular, we find rich and interesting multi-cycle electric hysteresis behaviors. The results show that these parameters play a crucial part in the physical properties of the AFE/FE BiFeO3/Co bilayer structure.

The direct, nonoxidative conversion of methane on a silica-confined single-atom iron catalyst is a landmark discovery in catalysis, but the proposed gas-phase reaction mechanism is still open to discussion. Here, we report a surface reaction mechanism by computational modeling and simulations. The activation of methane occurs at the single iron site, whereas the dissociated methyl disfavors desorption into gas phase under the reactive conditions. In contrast, the dissociated methyl prefers transferring to adjacent carbon sites of the active center (Fe1 ©SiC2 ), followed by C-C coupling and hydrogen transfer to produce the main product (ethylene) via a key -CH-CH2 intermediate. We find a quasi Mars-van Krevelen (quasi-MvK) surface reaction mechanism involving extracting and refilling the surface carbon atoms for the nonoxidative conversion of methane on Fe1 ©SiO2 and this surface process is identified to be more plausible than the alternative gas-phase reaction mechanism.

Synthesis of well-defined atomically mixed alloy nanoparticles on desired substrates is an ultimate goal for their practical application. Herein we report a general approach for preparing atomically mixed AuPt, AuPd, PtPd, AuPtPd NAs(nanoalloys) through single-atom level manipulation. By utilizing the ubiquitous tendency of aggregation of single atoms into nanoparticles at elevated temperatures, we have synthesized nanoalloys on a solid solvent with CeO2 as a carrier and transition-metal single atoms as an intermediate state. The supported nanoalloys/CeO2 with ultra-low noble metal content (containing 0.2 wt % Au and 0.2 wt % Pt) exhibit enhanced catalytic performance towards complete CO oxidation at room temperature and remarkable thermostability. This work provides a general strategy for facile and rapid synthesis of well-defined atomically mixed nanoalloys that can be applied for a range of emerging techniques.

We provide a molecular phylogeny of Asian pit vipers (the genus Gloydius) based on four mitochondrial genes (12S, 16S, ND4, and cytb). Sequences of Gloydius himalayanus, the only member of the genus that occurs south of the Himalayan range, are included for the first time. In addition, two new species of the genus Gloydius are described based on specimens collected from Zayu, Tibet, west of the Nujiang River and Heishui, Sichuan, east of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. The new species, Gloydius lipipengi sp. nov., can be differentiated from its congeners by the combination of the following characters: the third supralabial not reaching the orbit (separated from it by a suborbital scale); wide, black-bordered greyish postorbital stripe extending from the posterior margin of the orbit (not separated by the postoculars, covering most of the anterior temporal scale) to the ventral surface of the neck; irregular black annular crossbands on the mid-body; 23-21-15 dorsal scales; 165 ventral scales, and 46 subcaudal scales. Gloydius swildsp. nov. can be differentiated from its congeners by the narrower postorbital stripe (only half the width of the anterior temporal scale, the lower edge is approximately straight and bordered with white); a pair of arched stripes on the occiput; lateral body lakes black spots; a pair of round spots on the parietal scales; 21 rows of mid-body dorsal scales; zigzag dark brown stripes on the dorsum; 168–170 ventral scales, and 43–46 subcaudal scales. The molecular phylogeny in this study supports the sister relationship between G. lipipengisp. nov. and G. rubromaculatus, another recently described species from the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, more than 500 km away, and indicate the basal position of G. himalayanus within the genus and relatively distant relationship to its congeners.

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) and single-cluster catalysts (SCCs) are the new frontier of heterogeneous catalysis, which exhibit high activity, selectivity, stability, and atomic efficiency as well as precise tunability. However, the lack of efficient methods for producing high-loading and high-purity SACs and SCCs hinders their industrial applications. In this work, we propose a general and efficient strategy for the production of high-loading and high-purity SACs and SCCs anchored on suitable substrates. Our strategy relies on the existence of an electrochemical potential window (EcPW) we predict within which any aggregate forms of the target metal on the substrate are leached away by electrochemical oxidation, while the strongly bound single atoms or single clusters remain at the substrate. We demonstrate the applicability of this strategy with modeling the production of Pt, Pd, and Ni SACs anchored on N-doped graphene and Fe2O3 as well as Pt3 and Ni3 SCCs anchored on graphdiyne.

Our study was to understand the autophagy induce by different ratios and concentrations of LA/DHA on Raw264.7 cell, and then to investigate the effect of Raw264.7 autophagy on the clearance of Staphylococcus aureus. Raw264.7 cells was treated by LA/DHA in different concentrations (50/100 µmol/L) and ratios (4:1, 6:1, 8:1, 1:4, 1:6 and 1:8) for 6/12/24 h, cell viability assay was assessed by Cell Counting Kit-8, LC3B, p62, P-mTOR, P-Akt, P-PI3K and BECN 1 were detected by the Western blot. LA/DHA could induce autophagy of Raw264.7 cells through the PI3K-Akt-mTOR signaling pathway, the strong effect on autophagy by the concentration is 100 µmol/L, the ratio is 6:1 of LA/DHA, and the treatment time is 24 h. Compared with the images in the control group obtained by merging red and green fluorescence channels, the treatment of LA, DHA in a ratio of 6:1 at a concentration of 100 µmol/L for 24 h significantly lead to a substantial number of autophagosomes (yellow) as well as autolysosomes (red), enhancing autophagy flux. Autophagy induce by LA/DHA can devour and damage intracellular and extracellular Staphylococcus aureus. These results indicate that LA/DHA cloud induce autophagy and enhance the phagocytosis and killing ability of macrophages to intracellular parasitic bacteria.

Assembled from [Th48 Ni6 ] nanocages, the first transition-metal (TM)-thorium metal-organic framework (MOF, 1) has been synthesized and structurally characterized. 1 exhibits high solvent and acid/base stability, and resistance to 400 kGy β irradiation. Notably, 1 captures ReO4 - (an analogue of radioactive 99 TcO4 - , a key species in nuclear wastes) with a maximum capacity of 807 mg g-1 , falling among the largest values known to date. Furthermore, 1 can enrich methylene blue (MB) and can also serve as an effective and recyclable catalyst for CO2 fixation with epoxides; there is no significant loss of catalytic activity after 10 cycles. Theoretical studies with nucleus-independent chemical shifts and natural bond orbital analysis reveal that the [Th6 O8 ] clusters in 1 have a unique stable electronic structure with (d-p)π aromaticity, partially rationalising 1's stability.

In this paper, we have applied Monte Carlo method to investigate the magnetic behaviors of the antiferromagnetic/ferromagnetic mixed spin-5/2 and spin-3/2 Ising bilayer system in a time-dependent magnetic field. We have analyzed the magnetization, magnetic susceptibility, internal energy and hysteresis loops of the system in detail. We have clarified how the different physical parameters affect the critical temperature and observed the triple-loop hysteresis behavior.

Schisandrol A (SA), one of the most abundant bioactive lignans extracted from the Schisandra chinensis (Turcz.) Baill., has multiple pharmacological properties. However, the underlying mechanisms of SA in protection against myocardial ischemia/reperfusion (MI/R) injury remain obscure. The present experiment was performed to explore the cardioprotective effects of SA in MI/R injury and hypoxia/reoxygenation- (H/R-) induced cardiomyocyte injury and clarify the potential underlying mechanisms. SA treatment significantly improved MI/R injury as reflected by reduced myocardium infarct size, attenuated histological features, and ameliorated biochemical indicators. In the meantime, SA could profoundly ameliorate oxidative stress damage as evidenced by the higher glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) as well as lower malondialdehyde (MDA) and reactive oxygen species (ROS). Additionally, SA alleviated myocardial apoptosis as evidenced by a striking reduction of cleaved caspase-3 expression and increase of Bcl-2/Bax ratio. Further experiments demonstrated that SA had certain binding capability to the key functional protein 14-3-3θ. Mechanistically, SA prevented myocardial apoptosis through upregulating 14-3-3θ expression. Interestingly, siRNA against 14-3-3θ could promote apoptosis of cardiomyocytes, and H/R injury after knockdown of 14-3-3θ could further aggravate apoptosis, while overexpression of 14-3-3θ could significantly reduce apoptosis induced by H/R injury. Further, 14-3-3θ siRNA markedly weakened the antiapoptotic role of SA. Our results demonstrated that SA could exert apparent cardioprotection against MI/R injury and H/R injury, and potential mechanisms might be associated with inhibition of cardiomyocyte apoptosis at least partially through upregulation of 14-3-3θ.

Coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) is a new highly infectious disease caused by a novel coronavirus. Recently, the number of new cases infected pneumonia in the world continues to increase, which has aroused great concern from the international community. At present, there are no small-molecule specific anti-viral drugs for the treatment. The high mortality rate seriously threatens human health. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is a unique health resource in China. The combination of TCM and Western medicine has played a positive and important role in combating COVID-19 in China. In this review, through literature mining and analysis, it was found that TCM has the potential to prevent and treat the COVID-19. Then, the network pharmacological studies demonstrated that TCM played roles of anti-virus, anti-inflammation and immunoregulation in the management of COVID-19 via multiple components acting on multiple targets and multiple pathways. Finally, clinical researches also confirmed the beneficial effects of TCM on the treatment of patients. This review may provide meaningful and useful information on further drug development of COVID-19 and other viral infectious diseases.

Background This preclinical study in sheep sought to demonstrate the initial safety and feasibility of a novel transcatheter mitral valve system (Mi-thos valve) composed of a self-expanding frame and a bovine pericardial tissue bioprosthesis. Methods The valve was implanted in 26 sheep using a transapical approach for short- and long-term evaluation. The technical feasibility, safety, durability, and valve function were evaluated during and 6 months after the procedure using intracardiac and transthoracic echocardiography, multisliced computed tomography, histological analysis, and electron microscopy. Results The success rate of valve implantation was 100%, and the immediate survival rate after surgery was 84%. Five animals died within 90 min after the development of the prosthetic valve due to an acute left ventricular outflow tract obstruction (n = 2) and sudden intraoperative ventricular fibrillation (n = 3). Twelve animals died within 1 month due to acute left heart dysfunction. Mild (n = 5) and moderate (n = 2) paravalvular leakage occurred in seven animals, and two moderate PVL animals died of chronic heart failure within three months. Multimodality imaging studies of the remaining seven animals showed excellent function and alignment of the valves, with no coronary artery obstruction, no left ventricular outflow tract obstruction, no severe transvalvular gradients and no paravalvular leakage. Macroscopic evaluation demonstrated stable, secure positioning of the valve, with full endothelialization of the valve leaflets without injury to the ventricular or atrial walls. Histological and electron microscopic examinations at six months showed no obvious macro- or microcalcification in the leaflets. Conclusions Preclinical studies indicate that transcatheter implantation of the Mi-thos valve is technically safe and feasible. The durability, functionality, and lack of leaflet calcification were all verified in animal experiments. The information from these preclinical studies will be applied to patient selection criteria and the first-in-human studies.

The present quantum-mechanical and molecular-mechanics study reveals the crucial roles of H2 formation, of H2S shift and of N2 bond expansion in the nitrogenase process of the reduction of N2 to NH3. Proton and electron transfers to the Fe(C@Fe6S9)Mo unit of the FeMo-co complex weaken the Fe-S and Fe-H bonds and expose the Fe coordination sites, coupled with energy release due to H2 generation. Thereby the two sites Fe2 and Fe6 become prepared for stronger N2 adsorption, expanding and attenuating the ǀN≡Nǀ bond. After subsequent detachment of H2S from its Fe binding site into a holding site of the rearranged protein residue, the Fe6 site becomes completely unfolded, and the N2 triple bond becomes completely activated to an ‑N=N- double bond for easy subsequent hydrogenation to NH3. The reliable prediction of pedestrian-induced vibration is essential for vibration serviceability assessment and further vibration mitigation design of footbridges. The response of the footbridge is governed by not only the structure dynamic model but also the crowd-induced load, which naturally involves randomness and uncertainty. It is consequently significant to appropriately characterize the uncertainties during the numerical modelling of the crowd behaviour effects on crowd-induced load. This work proposes a comprehensive approach to quantify the uncertainty from both the structure dynamic model and the crowd behaviour, and subsequently, to propagate the multiple sources of uncertainties from the input parameters to the response of the footbridge. The crowd behaviour is simulated using the social force model and translated to the crowd-induced load by combining with a single pedestrian induced walking force model. By decoupling the continuous model into several single degrees of freedom systems according to relevant modes in the vibration serviceability evaluation, the structure dynamic model of the footbridge is developed where the structural responses are calculated. In this paper, all the uncertain parameters are investigated together in a double-loop framework to perform uncertainty quantification and propagation in the form of probability-box (shortly termed as P-box). The uncertainty space of the peak structural responses is finally obtained by the Monte Carlo sampling and optimization in the outer loop and inner loop, respectively. Feasibility and performance of the overall approach are demonstrated by considering a real scale footbridge, and the failure probability of each comfort class regarding the peak acceleration response is also evaluated. Results show that, special attention should be paid on both the epistemic and aleatory uncertainties from the crowd behaviour in the vibration serviceability assessments of footbridges. The proposed uncertainty quantification framework may provide significant insights and improve the reliability for future vibration serviceability evaluations of footbridges by incorporating the crowd behaviour effects.

Single noble metal atoms and ultrafine metal clusters catalysts tend to sinter into aggregated particles at elevated temperatures, driven by the decrease of metal surface free energy. Herein, we report an unexpected phenomenon that noble metal nanoparticles (Pd, Pt, Au-NPs) can be transformed to thermally stable single atoms (Pd, Pt, Au-SAs) above 900 °C in an inert atmosphere. The atomic dispersion of metal single atoms was confirmed by aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy and X-ray absorption fine structures. The dynamic process was recorded by in situ environmental transmission electron microscopy, which showed competing sintering and atomization processes during NP-to-SA conversion. Further, density functional theory calculations revealed that high-temperature NP-to-SA conversion was driven by the formation of the more thermodynamically stable Pd-N4 structure when mobile Pd atoms were captured on the defects of nitrogen-doped carbon. The thermally stable single atoms (Pd-SAs) exhibited even better activity and selectivity than nanoparticles (Pd-NPs) for semi-hydrogenation of acetylene.

The present study was designed to elucidate whether the mechanism by which osthole decreases collagenⅠ/ Ⅲ contents and their ratio is regulating the TGF-β/Smad signaling pathway in TGF-β1-overexpressed mouse cardiac fibroblasts (CFs). These CFs were cultured and treated with different concentrations of osthole. Our results showed that the TGF-β1 expression in the CFs transfected with that the recombinant expression plasmids pcDNA3.1(+)-TGF-β1 was significantly enhanced. After the CFs were treated with 1.25-5 μg·mL-1 of osthole for 24 h, the mRNA and protein expression levels of collagensⅠand Ⅲ were reduced. The collagen Ⅰ/Ⅲ ratio was also reduced. The mRNA and protein expression levels of TGF-β1, TβRⅠ, Smad2/3, P-Smad2/3, Smad4, and α-SMA were decreased, whereas the expression level of Smad7 was increased. These effects suggested that osthole could inhibit collagen Ⅰ and Ⅲ expression and reduce their ratio via the TGF-β/Smad signaling pathway in TGF-β1 overexpressed CFs. These effects of osthole may play beneficial roles in the prevention and treatment of myocardial fibrosis.
