Many birds develop brood patches on their ventral apterium under hormonal regulation to effectively transmit body heat to eggs during incubation. The developed patch has several characteristics, including de-feathering, vascularization, and edema. However, little is known about whether avian brood parasites that do not incubate their eggs exhibit brood patch development during the breeding season. In this study, we measured the size of the ventral apterium in 114 Common Cuckoos (Cuculus canorus) captured in the field throughout the breeding season and examined the appearance of the ventral apterium to confirm the development of brood patches. We also examined whether morphological traits and various factors correlated with the size of the ventral apterium (sternal apterium and abdominal apterium) and how it changed during the breeding season. We found no clear signs of brood patch development in Common Cuckoos captured throughout the breeding season, indicating that they likely did not develop brood patches on the ventral apterium during this period. We also found that ventral apterium size was positively correlated with wing length and body weight. In addition, Common Cuckoos with newly growing feathers on the boundary of the ventral apterium with pteryla were frequently observed as seasons progressed to the end. In conclusion, Common Cuckoos exhibit neither brood patch development nor the vestigial characteristics of ancestral brood patches, except for the growth of feathers on boundary the ventral apterium. Further studies examining brood patches across different groups of avian brood parasites are valuable for enhancing our understanding of the developmental and physiological adaptations of avian brood parasites.

Abstract Non-operative treatment is the mainstay of colonic diverticulitis, but some patients require surgery due to non-operative treatment failure. This study aims to identify risk factors for the failure of non-operative treatment of colonic diverticulitis. From January 2011 to December 2020, we retrospectively reviewed 2362 patients with non-operative treatment for first-attack acute diverticulitis. Patients were categorized into non-operative treatment success or failure groups. Clinical characteristics and serum inflammatory markers were analyzed by multivariable logistic regression to determine risk factors for non-operative treatment failure of colonic diverticulitis. Overall, 2.2% (n = 50) of patients underwent delayed surgery within 30 days (median 4.0 [3.0; 8.0]) due to non-operative treatment failure. Summary: Avian brood parasites and their hosts display varied egg-puncture behaviors, exerting asymmetric co-evolutionary selection pressures on eggshells’ breaking strength. We investigated eggshell structural and textural characteristics that may improve its mechanical performance. Parasitic eggshell calcified layers showed complex ultra- and microstructural patterns. However, stronger parasitic eggshells are not due to lower textural severity (characterized by lower preferred crystallographic orientation, larger local grain misorientation and smaller Kearns factor), but rather to grain boundary (GB) microstructure characteristics within the eggshell outermost layer (palisade layer, PL). Accordingly, the thicker the PL and the more complex the GB pathways are, the tougher the parasitic eggshells will be. These characteristics, which we can identify as a “GB Engineering” driven co-evolutionary process, further improve eggshell breaking strength in those parasitic species that suffer relatively high frequencies of egg-puncturing by congeneric or hosts. Overall, plain textural patterns are not suitable predictors for comparing mechanical performance of bioceramic materials.

Abstract Despite advances in precision oncology, cancer remains a global public health issue. In this report, proof‐of‐principle evidence is presented that a cell‐penetrable peptide (ACP52C) dissociates transcription factor CP2c complexes and induces apoptosis in most CP2c oncogene‐addicted cancer cells through transcription activity‐independent mechanisms. CP2cs dissociated from complexes directly interact with and degrade YY1, leading to apoptosis via the MDM2‐p53 pathway. The liberated CP2cs also inhibit TDP2, causing intrinsic genome‐wide DNA strand breaks and subsequent catastrophic DNA damage responses. These two mechanisms are independent of cancer driver mutations but are hindered by high MDM2 p60 expression. However, resistance to ACP52C mediated by MDM2 p60 can be sensitized by CASP2 inhibition. Additionally, derivatives of ACP52C conjugated with fatty acid alone or with a CASP2 inhibiting peptide show improved pharmacokinetics and reduced cancer burden, even in ACP52C‐resistant cancers. This study enhances the understanding of ACP52C‐induced cancer‐specific apoptosis induction and supports the use of ACP52C in anticancer drug development.

Long-term changes in caregiver burden should be clarified considering that extended post-stroke disability can increase caregiver stress. We assessed long-term changes in caregiver burden severity and its predictors. This study was a retrospective analysis of the Korean Stroke Cohort for Functioning and Rehabilitation. Patients with an acute first-ever stroke were enrolled from August 2012 to May 2015. Data were collected at 6 months and 6 years after stroke onset. The caregiver burden was measured with a subjective caregiver burden questionnaire based on the Korean version of the Caregiver Burden Inventory. The caregivers’ characteristics and patients’ clinical and functional status were also examined at each follow-up. A high caregiver burden, which suggests a risk of burnout, was reported by 37.9% and 51.7% of caregivers at 6 months and 6 years post-stroke, respectively. Both the caregiver burden total score and proportion of caregivers at risk of burnout did not decrease between 6 months and 6 years. The patients’ disability (OR = 11.60; 95% CI 1.58–85.08; p = 0.016), caregivers’ self-rated stress (OR = 0.03; 95% CI 0.00–0.47; p = 0.013), and caregivers’ quality of life (OR = 0.76; 95% CI 0.59–0.99; p = 0.042) were burden predictors at 6 months. At 6 years, only the patients’ disability (OR = 5.88; 95% CI 2.19–15.82; p < 0.001) and caregivers’ psychosocial stress (OR = 1.26; 95% CI 1.10–1.44; p = 0.001) showed significance. Nearly half of the caregivers were at risk of burnout, which lasted for 6 years after stroke onset. The patients’ disability and caregivers’ stress were burden predictors in both subacute and chronic phases of stroke. The findings suggest that consistent interventions, such as emotional support or counseling on stress relief strategies for caregivers of stroke survivors, may reduce caregiver burden. Further research is needed to establish specific strategies appropriate for Korean caregivers to alleviate their burden in caring for stroke patients.

The common cuckoo Cuculus canorus is a generalist brood parasite at the species level, consisting of multiple groups of individuals specialized in the same host species (termed gens and gentes in plural). Ecological variation between different host species, including habitat type and breeding phenology often result in different behavioral, developmental and genetic profiles among cuckoo gentes. In this study, we report a long-distance migration performed by the Korean population of common cuckoos distributing allopatrically with different host specificity: the meadow bunting Emberiza cioides gens and the vinous-throated parrotbill Sinosuthora webbiana gens. Our satellite tracking of 10 common cuckoos (five of each gens) showed that Korean cuckoos performed around 22,000 km roundtrips to Southeast Africa with up to three sea-crossing, including 3000 km non-stop Arabian Sea-crossing. Cuckoos left South Korea between late August and mid-September, and arrived at the wintering area (e.g., Tanzania and Mozambique) around the end of November, staying there until March or April next year before returning to Korea in May. Their migration routes were very narrow, and similar between the outward and return journey. The major stopovers were usually located before and after sea-crossing, such as in Myanmar, India and Somalia, of which the conservation value need to be recognized. Despite these long and delicate journeys, different cuckoo gentes that we tracked exhibited very similar migration patterns, consequently being separated on the breeding ground but otherwise being mixed.

Abstract Metformin is associated with good tumor response in preoperative concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT) for rectal cancer. This study aims to demonstrate that the timing of metformin is related to the tumor response on preoperative CCRT for rectal cancer. From January 2010 to December 2017, 232 patients who underwent curative resection after preoperative CCRT were reviewed. Patients were divided into groups with or without diabetes or metformin. The timing of metformin administration was divided based on before and from initiation of CCRT. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to identify predictors for tumor response. Tumor downstaging (p = 0.02) and good response rates of tumor regression grade (TRG) (p = 0.008) were significantly higher in the group administered metformin before CCRT than other groups. In the multivariate analysis, metformin administration before CCRT was a significant factor in predicting tumor downstaging [odds ratio (OR) 10.31, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.76–102.08, p = 0.02] and good TRG (OR 12.55, 95% CI 2.38–80.24, p = 0.004). In patients with rectal cancer who underwent preoperative CCRT, neoadjuvant therapy of metformin before CCRT was significantly associated with good tumor response.

Sperm competition has been studied in numerous species as a representative example of postcopulatory sexual selection, where sampling sperm from male is the most basic and important step. Sperm collection can be tricky in birds, however, because unlike mammals, the genitals of birds are generally latent in the cloacal region and their characteristics vary among species. Various methods to collect sperm from different birds have been tested, such as cloacal massage, feces collection, and electro-stimulation, but their applicability varies depending on species. In this study, we introduced the urodeum stimulation method (UroS method) to collect sperm from Cuculus cuckoos, such as the Common Cuckoo (C. canorus). These species are expected to have interesting patterns of pair bonding and sperm competition because of their unique breeding strategy called brood parasitism; however, it remains unexplored. In this study, we described the application of our new method to expel semen from male common cuckoos, measured the volume of semen collected, checked the presence of sperm in the semen sample, and finally estimated its success rate among 82 males. Samples were successfully collected from 76 cuckoos (approximately 93%) and the colors and volumes of the samples were very diverse. Sperm was present in 43 of these samples (57%), showing a sperm observation rate approximately twice as high as that of the conventional cloacal massage method. We believe that this novel method will contribute to a better understanding of postcopulatory sexual selection in avian brood parasites and facilitate the process of sperm collection and artificial insemination in other medium-sized birds.

Abstract The role of matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) in tumor cell migration has been widely studied, however, the characteristics and effects of MMP-2 in clinical sample of metastatic colorectal cancer (CRC) remain poorly understood. Here, in order to unveil the perturbed proteomic signal during MMP-2 induced cancer progression, we analyzed plasma proteome of CRC patients according to disease progression, HCT116 cancer secretome upon MMP-2 knockdown, and publicly available CRC tissue proteome data. Collectively, the integrative analysis of multi-layered proteomes revealed that a protein cluster containing EMT (Epithelial-to-Mesenchymal Transition)-associated proteins such as CD9-integrin as well as MMP-2. The proteins of the cluster were regulated by MMP-2 perturbation and exhibited significantly increased expressions in tissue and plasma as disease progressed from TNM (Tumor, Node, and Metastasis) stage I to II. Furthermore, we also identified a plausible association between MMP-2 up-regulation and activation of focal adhesion kinase signaling in the proteogenomic analysis of CRC patient tissues. Based on these comparative and integrative analyses, we suggest that the high invasiveness in the metastatic CRC resulted from increased secretion of MMP-2 and CD9-integrin complex mediated by FAK signaling activation.

Identifying proper surrogate species or groups is a challenging but critical step in the application of surrogate species approaches in biodiversity conservation because their effectiveness can vary according to biological communities. Recently, the brood parasitic common cuckoo, Cuculus canorus, has been suggested as a surrogate for describing biodiversity, primarily based on its strong parasitic relationship with other host species. However, the efficiency of cuckoo surrogates has been challenged because of the potential limitations of the methodological approaches. Furthermore, its generality rarely has been explicitly tested in other parasitic species with local biodiversity data collected through conventional schemes such as grid-based sampling. Using bird survey data obtained from a grid-based sampling scheme in South Korea, we evaluated the surrogate efficiency of five cuckoo species for bird diversity (species richness and phylogenetic diversity) and generated surrogate species groups. We found that among the five parasitic cuckoo species breeding in South Korea, the common cuckoo and the Indian cuckoo C. micropterus were effective surrogate species. Among these, only the common cuckoo belonged to the best surrogate species group together with its major host species; the Indian cuckoo showed less effective surrogate efficiency than the common cuckoo. In conclusion, our study shows that the common cuckoo, as a single species and a member of a species assemblage, is an effective indicator species for bird diversity in grid-based survey data. However, the result that not all parasitic cuckoo species performed a surrogate role effectively implies that multiple functions may be associated with the surrogate efficiency of brood parasitic cuckoos, along with the importance of host-parasite relationships.

ABSTRACT Vancomycin and β-lactams are clinically important antibiotics that inhibit the formation of peptidoglycan cross-links, but their binding targets are different. The binding target of vancomycin is d-alanine-d-alanine (d-Ala-d-Ala), whereas that of β-lactam is penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs). In this study, we revealed the divergent effects of peptidoglycan (PG) carboxypeptidase DacA on vancomycin and β-lactam resistance in Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis. The deletion of DacA induced sensitivity to most β-lactams, whereas it induced strong resistance toward vancomycin. Notably, both phenotypes did not have a strong association with ld-transpeptidases, which are necessary for the formation of PG 3-3 cross-links and covalent bonds between PG and an Lpp outer membrane (OM) lipoprotein. Vancomycin resistance was induced by an increased amount of decoy d-Ala-d-Ala residues within PG, whereas β-lactam sensitivity was associated with physical interactions between DacA and PBPs. The presence of an OM permeability barrier strongly strengthened vancomycin resistance, but it significantly weakened β-lactam sensitivity. Collectively, our results revealed two distinct functions of DacA, which involved inverse modulation of bacterial resistance to clinically important antibiotics, β-lactams and vancomycin, and presented evidence for a link between DacA and PBPs. IMPORTANCE Bacterial PG hydrolases play important roles in various aspects of bacterial physiology, including cytokinesis, PG synthesis, quality control of PG, PG recycling, and stress adaptation. Of all the PG hydrolases, the role of PG carboxypeptidases is poorly understood, especially regarding their impacts on antibiotic resistance. We have revealed two distinct functions of PG carboxypeptidase DacA with respect to antibiotic resistance. The deletion of DacA led to sensitivity to most β-lactams, while it caused strong resistance to vancomycin. Our study provides novel insights into the roles of PG carboxypeptidases in the regulation of antibiotic resistance and a potential clue for the development of a drug to improve the clinical efficacy of β-lactam antibiotics.

Generalist avian brood parasites vary considerably in their degree of host specialization (e.g., number of hosts); some parasitize the nests of just a few host species, whereas others exploit more than 100 species. Several factors, including habitat range, habitat type, and geographic location, have been suggested to account for these variations. However, inter-specific differences in individual attributes, such as personality and plasticity, have rarely been considered as potential factors of such variation, despite their potential relationship to, for example, range expansion. Using cage experiments, we tested the hypothesis that parasitic species exploiting more host species may be more active and exploratory. To this end, we quantified behaviors exhibited by two Cuculus cuckoos (Common Cuckoo C. canorus and Oriental Cuckoo C. optatus) that vary greatly in their number of host species. Specifically, we evaluated exploratory behavior displayed by birds in the cage, such as the number of movements, head-turning, wing-flapping, and stepping. The Common Cuckoo, which has a higher number of host species, tended to exhibit higher levels of exploratory behaviors than the Oriental Cuckoo. Our study showed that the two cuckoo species exhibited different exploratory levels, as predicted by the differences in their number of hosts. Further studies regarding the causality between individual attributes and host specialization with improved experimental methodology would greatly enhance our understanding of the role of individual characteristics in the coevolution of avian brood parasites and their hosts.

A well-known visual signal, hawk-like features such as yellow eyes and feet, and barred underparts have been recognized as coevolutionary traits obtained against host defense in Cuculus cuckoos. However, the variation of these traits within and among species remains poorly understood because empirical studies quantifying these traits are limited in terms of the number of studies and the number of species concerned, and mostly depend on museum collections. In this study, we quantified and compared these traits as well as other new features (e.g., inner wing spot and underpart background color) in the four sympatric Cuculus cuckoos (Cuculus poliocephalus, Cuculus micropterus, Cuculus optatus, and Cuculus canorus) that were wild-captured in South Korea. We found that the yellow color of the eye ring and feet was fairly consistent across the four species. However, the iris color appeared to vary within a species (e.g., between sexes) and varied more substantially among species from nearly black in C. micropterus to bright yellow in C. canorus. In addition, there were significant differences among species with respect to the thickness of the underpart bars, from the thinnest in C. canorus to the thickest in C. micropterus. We also found that the underpart color (pure white versus yellowish brown) and the number of inner wing spots varied within and among species. These results indicate that although hawk-like traits are widely present in Cuculus cuckoos, detailed quantitative features of these traits vary across species. We discuss the potential reasons that generate such variations and suggest future directions to increase our understanding of visual signals in avian brood parasitism.

Avian brood parasites such as Cuculus cuckoos are recognized to be affected more severely by the adverse effect of climate change owing to close host-parasite relationships. However, the spatial effect of climate change has rarely been assessed in the avian brood parasite-host system. To test this effect, we predicted the distribution shift of an avian brood parasite, the lesser cuckoo Cuculus poliocephalus and its announced 12 host species according to climate change scenarios. Using species occurrence data (presence-only) and environmental variables obtained from publicly available databases, we developed species distribution models under the current and future climate conditions and then compared how much their ranges and the overlap between the cuckoo and hosts are predicted to change owing to climate change. The amount of suitable habitats for the lesser cuckoo and for most host species was predicted to decrease, all the while the ranges generally shifted northward. Climate change also decreased the amount of overlap between the lesser cuckoo and its hosts. This is a mechanism that may significantly shrink the realised range of the lesser cuckoo and should therefore be taken into account in range projections. These results provide evidence that climate change affects cuckoos not only through altered abiotic factors but also because cuckoos and hosts could react differently to such changes, jeopardizing the ability of parasites to track their climate envelope.

Transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) is a neuromodulation procedure that is currently studied for the purpose of improving cognitive function in various diseases. A few studies have shown positive effects of tACS in Alzheimer’s disease (AD). However, the mechanism underlying tACS has not been established. The purpose of this study was to investigate the mechanism of tACS in five familial AD mutation (5xFAD) mouse models. We prepared twenty 4-month-old mice and divided them into four groups: wild-type mice without stimulation (WT-NT group), wild-type mice with tACS (WT-T group), 5xFAD mice without stimulation (AD-NT group), and 5xFAD mice with tACS (AD-T group). The protocol implemented was as follows: gamma frequency 200 μA over the bilateral frontal lobe for 20 min over 2 weeks. The following tests were conducted: excitatory postsynaptic potential (EPSP) recording, Western blot analysis (cyclic AMP response element-binding (CREB) proteins, phosphorylated CREB proteins, brain-derived neurotrophic factor, and parvalbumin) to examine the synaptic plasticity. The EPSP was remarkably increased in the AD-T group compared with in the AD-NT group. In the Western blot analysis, the differences among the groups were not significant. Hence, tACS can affect the long-lasting enhancement of synaptic transmission in mice models of AD.

Abstract Background Avian brood parasitism is a breeding strategy in which brood parasites lay their eggs in the nest of other species. This behavior is closely related to aspects of the biological evolution of the parasitic species such as reduced female body size and plumage color polymorphism. However, not much is known whether it is associated with the evolution of vocalization. Methods We collected samples of the typical male calls of 67 species belonging to the sub-family Cuculinae. Using the calls, we measured five acoustic parameters for each samples to test the differences in vocal structures between parasitic and nonparasitic species. To control for potential phylogenetic effects, we also performed phylogenetic independent contrast analyses. Results We found that vocal structures were relatively similar among the parasitic species with a tendency to simple and low-frequency calls. In addition, harmonic structures were observed more frequently in the nonparasitic group. Conclusions Overall, these results support the idea that brood parasitic behavior with associated ecological conditions may play a role in vocal evolution, a better understanding of which may greatly improve our knowledge of vocal diversification in non-oscine birds.

Abstract Bilateral symmetry is assumed to contribute to the evolution of eye color, with the left and right eye being the same color in most vertebrates; yet, few studies tested this assumption. Here, we compared the amount of iris flecking (black spots presented on the iris) between the left and right eye of 76 adult common cuckoos Cuculus canorus. We found considerable variation in the total amount of iris flecking among individuals, with variation being associated with body size and sex. We also found that the amount of iris flecking differed between the left and right eye and that this left-right asymmetry was not random, with the left eye almost always being darker than the right eye. Furthermore, this asymmetry was negatively associated with wing length; however, this effect was limited to individuals with dark eyes. Overall, the asymmetric, but non-random, distribution of iris flecking between the left and right eye may indicate that selection pressures driving asymmetry (such as visual lateralization) act on the development of iris colors, even though this effect might be limited, due to the role of bilateral symmetry.

Accurate detection and sensing of bacteria are becoming increasingly important not only in microbiology but in a variety of fields including medicine, food, public health, and environmental science. However, even new rapid methods are not convenient enough. Here, we describe a simple and efficient label-free bacterial detection system using the polydiacetylene (PDA) liposomes immobilized on the 3D polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) micropillars. Our system utilizes the colorimetric response of amine functionalized PDA vesicles to surfactin, a bacterial cyclic lipopeptide commonly released by Gram-positive Bacillus species as an antibiotic. To improve the sensitivity of PDA vesicles to surfactin by increasing the number and surface area of immobilized vesicles, the PDA vesicles were immobilized on the micropillar structure to give a hierarchical 3D PDA vesicle structure. For the fabrication of the 3D micropillar structure, polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) was used to overcome the limitations imposed by silicon-based fabrication. In contrast to the 2D-PDA-PDMS system, which could only hardly detect the presence of 500 μM surfactin, the 3D-PDA-PDMS system could efficiently detect the presence of 5 μM surfactin and the initial presence of 4 × 101 cells/ml of Bacillus subtilis NCIB3610, which actively produces surfactin. Furthermore, bacterial strains that are known to produce no surfactin, such as Staphylococcus aureus Newman, Escherichia coli DH5α, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa PA14 were not detected by our system suggesting that the 3D-PDA-PDMS system is highly specific to surfactin but not to other chemicals produced by bacteria. Taken together, our results suggest that the 3D-PDA-PDMS system can sensitively and selectively be used for the high throughput detection and screening of biotechnologically important surfactin-producing bacterial strains.

We report a simple detection of protein kinase activity using Zn(II)-mediated fluorescent resonance energy transfer (FRET) between quantum dots (QDs) and dye-tethered peptides. With neither complex chemical ligands nor surface modification of QDs, Zn(II) was the only metal ion that enabled the phosphorylated peptides to be strongly attached on the carboxyl groups of the QD surface via metal coordination, thus leading to a significant FRET efficiency. As a result, protein kinase activity in intermixed solution was efficiently detected by QD-FRET via Zn(II) coordination, especially when the peptide substrate was combined with affinity-based purification. We also found that mono- and di-phosphorylation in the peptide substrate could be discriminated by the Zn(II)-mediated QD-FRET. Our approach is expected to find applications for studying physiological function and signal transduction with respect to protein kinase activity.

The ferric uptake regulator (Fur) family proteins include sensors of Fe (Fur), Zn (Zur), and peroxide (PerR). Among Fur family proteins, Fur and Zur are ubiquitous in most prokaryotic organisms, whereas PerR exists mainly in Gram positive bacteria as a functional homologue of OxyR. Gram positive bacteria such as Bacillus subtilis, Listeria monocytogenes and Staphylococcus aureus encode three Fur family proteins: Fur, Zur, and PerR. In this study, we identified five Fur family proteins from B. licheniformis: two novel PerR-like proteins (BL00690 and BL00950) in addition to Fur (BL05249), Zur (BL03703), and PerR (BL00075) homologues. Our data indicate that all of the five B. licheniformis Fur homologues contain a structural Zn2+ site composed of four cysteine residues like many other Fur family proteins. Furthermore, we provide evidence that the PerR-like proteins (BL00690 and BL00950) as well as PerRBL (BL00075), but not FurBL (BL05249) and ZurBL (BL03703), can sense H2O2 by histidine oxidation with different sensitivity. We also show that PerR2 (BL00690) has a PerR-like repressor activity for PerR-regulated genes in vivo. Taken together, our results suggest that B. licheniformis contains three PerR subfamily proteins which can sense H2O2 by histidine oxidation not by cysteine oxidation, in addition to Fur and Zur.

The presence of multiple host-specific races in the common cuckoo Cuculus canorus has long been recognized as an evolutionary enigma but how this genetic divergence could be maintained is still equivocal. Some recent studies supported biparental genetic contribution in maintaining the host-races, implying the necessity that they should recognize and mate assortatively with those who belong to the same host-race. One potential mechanism to accomplish this is that males may produce distinctive calls according to host-specific lineages. In order to test this hypothesis, we carried out a comparative study for male cuckoo calls recorded from three distant populations, where two populations share a same host species while the other parasitizes a different host species. Populations with similar habitat structures, maintaining comparable distance interval (ca. 150 km) between neighboring ones, were selected so as to minimize any other causes of vocal differentiation except the pattern of host use. By comparing the vocal characteristics of male cuckoos at the level of individual as well as population, we found that individual males indeed produced different calls in terms of spectral and temporal features. However, these differences disappeared when we compared the calls at the population level according to host species and geographic location. In conclusion, it seems unlikely for the cuckoos to identify the stepparent of male cuckoos based solely on the vocal characteristics, although they may be able to use this cue for individual recognition. Future studies including detailed morphological and genetic comparisons will be worthwhile to further elucidate this issue.

BACKGROUND: Theoretical modelling of biparental care suggests that it can be a stable strategy if parents partially compensate for changes in behaviour by their partners. In empirical studies, however, parents occasionally match rather than compensate for the actions of their partners. The recently proposed "information model" adds to the earlier theory by factoring in information on brood value and/or need into parental decision-making. This leads to a variety of predicted parental responses following a change in partner work-rate depending on the information available to parents. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We experimentally test predictions of the information model using a population of long-tailed tits. We show that parental information on brood need varies systematically through the nestling period and use this variation to predict parental responses to an experimental increase in partner work-rate via playback of extra chick begging calls. When parental information is relatively high, partial compensation is predicted, whereas when parental information is low, a matching response is predicted. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: We find that although some responses are consistent with predictions, parents match a change in their partner's work-rate more often than expected and we discuss possible explanations for our findings.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate perceptions of fatherhood among fathers of high-risk neonates and their confidence regarding neonatal care. Methods: A study was conducted of 100 fathers whose neonates had been admitted to a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) for at least 48 hours. Perceptions of fatherhood, neonatal characteristics, and fathers' confidence regarding neonatal care were measured using a self-reported questionnaire. The survey took approximately 10 minutes to complete and was completed anonymously. The factors that affected fathers' confidence regarding neonatal care were analyzed using multiple regression. Results: The scores for positive and negative perceptions of fatherhood were relatively high at 4.27 and 3.42 out of 5 points, respectively. A positive perception of fatherhood was found to influence fathers' confidence regarding neonatal care. Conclusion: NICU nurses should encourage fathers to effectively perform their parenting roles by implementing educational programs and interventions to promote positive perceptions of fatherhood and fathers' confidence regarding neonatal care after discharge.
