A novel β-cyclodextrin functionalized silica gel (SAM-Si-β-CD) was prepared with grafting β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) to silica gel (Si-β-CD) containing salicylamide. It was characterized using XPS, SEM and FT-IR techniques. Variables of batch experiments including pH, temperature, contact time, interfering ions were studied. Langmuir, Freundlich isotherm and kinetic models were suitable to describe the adsorption process. The results showed that the equilibrium adsorption capacity was found to be 6.45 mg g−1 respectively at pH 4.5, equilibrium time 60 min and initial uranium(VI) concentration 25 mg L−1. Additionally, SAM-Si-β-CD effectively adsorbed UO2 2+ in aqueous solution in the presence of interfering ions (Na+, Fe3+, Cu2+, Mg2+, La3+, Mn2+, Zn2+, Pb2+ and Hg2+).

The adsorption of thorium(IV) [Th(IV)] was studied using a novel 6-o-monotosyl-deoxy-β-cyclodextrin inclusion complex of dibenzoyl (inclusion complex), which was acquired by the reaction of dibenzoyl and 6-OTs-β-CD with the mole ratio of 1:2. The adsorption of Th(IV) onto inclusion complex were investigated as a function of pH value, contact time, temperature, interfering ions and Th(IV) concentration using batch adsorption technique. The maximum adsorption of Th(IV) and the equilibrium adsorption capacity were found to be 89 ± 1 % and 17.83 mg g−1 respectively at pH 3.0, equilibrium time 20 min and initial Th(IV) concentration 20 mg L−1. Adsorption kinetics, adsorption isotherm and thermodynamics were carried out.

The emission of sulfur dioxide (SO2) produced by the sinter machine takes up more than 50% of the total SO2 emission of the iron and steel industry in China. So it is necessary to take effective measures to strengthen the control of sintering gas desulphurization. A novel sintering gas desulphurization technology, the inner and outer circulating fluidized bed (IOCFB) which is suitable for retrofitting the existing metallurgical industry plants in China will be introduced in this paper. The novel composite internals which can improve the removal efficiency of SO2 is also described. Current research and development needs for IOCFB are to further increase desulphurization efficiency and improve the reliability of plant components. To solve these problems, a pilot plant emulating IOCFB desulfurization processes had been built.
