Abstract Background Liver cancer has a high global incidence, particularly in East Asia. Early detection difficulties lead to poor prognosis. Single-cell sequencing precisely identifies gene expression differences in specific cell types, making it valuable in tumor microenvironment research and immune drug development. However, the characteristics of tumor cells themselves are equally important for patient prognosis and treatment. Methods We downloaded single-cell sequencing data from GSE189903, grouped cells by cluster markers, and classified epithelial cells into adjacent non-tumor, normal, and tumor cells. Differential gene and survival analyses identified significant differential genes. Using TCGA-LIHC data, we divided 370 patients into test and training sets. We constructed and validated a LASSO model based on these genes in both sets and two external datasets. Functional, immune infiltration, and mutation analyses were performed on high and low-risk groups. We also used RNA-seq and IC50 data of 15 liver cancer cell lines from GDSC, scoring them with our prognostic model to identify potential drugs for high-risk patients. Abstract Background Pathological scars (PS) are one of the most common complications in patients with trauma and burns, leading to functional impairments and aesthetic concerns. Mechanical tension at injury sites is a crucial factor in PS formation. However, the precise mechanisms remain unclear due to the lack of reliable animal models. Results We developed a novel mouse model, the Retroflex Scar Model (RSM), which induces PS by applying controlled tension to wounds in vivo. RNA sequencing identified significant transcriptome changes in RSM-induced scars. Elevated expression of E-Selectin (Sele) was observed in endothelial cells from both the RSM model and human PS (Keloid) samples. In vitro studies demonstrated that cyclic mechanical stretching (CMS) increased Sele expression, promoting monocyte adhesion and the release of pro-inflammatory factors. Single-cell sequencing analysis from the GEO database, complemented by Western blotting, immunofluorescence, and co-immunoprecipitation, confirmed the role of Sele-mediated monocyte adhesion in PS formation. Additionally, we developed Sele-targeted siRNA liposome nanoparticles (LNPs) to inhibit monocyte adhesion. Intradermal administration of these LNPs effectively reduced PS formation in both in vivo and in vitro studies. Conclusions This study successfully established a reliable mouse model for PS, highlighting the significant roles of mechanical tension and chronic inflammation in PS formation. We identified Sele as a key therapeutic target and developed Sele-targeted siRNA LNPs, which demonstrated potential as a preventive strategy for PS. Abstract Background Habenaria, a genus in the family Orchidaceae, are the nearly cosmopolitan orchids, and most species have significant medicinal and ornamental values. Despite the morphological and molecular data that have been studied in recent years, the phylogenetic relationship is still unclear. Results We sequenced, assembled, and annotated the chloroplast (cp) genomes of two species (Habenaria aitchisonii Rchb.f. and Habenaria tibetica Schltr.ex Limpricht) of Habenaria grown on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau (QTP), and compared them with seven previously published cp genomes which may aid in the genomic profiling of these species. The two genomes ranged from 155,259–155,269 bp in length and both included 132 genes, encoding 86 proteins, 38 tRNAs and 8 rRNAs. In the cp genomes, the tandem repeats (797), SSRs (2195) and diverse loci (3214) were identified. Comparative analyses of codon usage, amino frequency, microsatellite, oligo repeats and transition and transversion substitutions revealed similarities between the species. Moreover, we identified 16 highly polymorphic regions with a nucleotide diversity above 0.02, which may be suitable for robust authentic barcoding and inferring in the phylogeny of Habenaria species. Among the polymorphic regions, positive selection was significantly exerted on several genes, such as cemA, petA, and ycf1. This finding may suggest an important adaptation strategy for the two Habenaria species on the QTP. The phylogenetic relationship revealed that H. aitchisonii and H. tibetica were more closely related to each other than to the other species, and the other seven species were clustered in three groups. In addition, the estimated divergence time suggested that the two species separated from the others approximately 0.39 Mya in the Neogene period. Our findings also suggest that Habenaria can be divided into different sections. Conclusions The results of this study enriched the genomics resources of Habenaria, and SSR marker may aid in the conservation management of two endangered species.

Abstract Tuberculosis has been one of the most common communicable diseases raising global concerns. Accurately predicting the incidence of Tuberculosis remains challenging. Here we constructed a time-series analysis and fusion tool using multi-source data, and aimed to more accurately predict the incidence trend of tuberculosis of Anhui Province from 2013 to 2023. Random forest algorithm (RF), Feature Recursive Elimination (RFE) and Least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) were implemented to improve the derivation of features related to infectious diseases and feature work. Based on the characteristics of infectious disease data, a model of RF-RFE-LASSO integrated particle swarm optimization multiple inputs long short term memory recurrent neural network (RRL-PSO-MiLSTM) was created to perform more accurate prediction. Results showed that the PSO-MiLSTM achieved excellent prediction results compared with common single-input and multi-input time-series models (test set MSE:42.3555, MAE: 59.3333, RMSE: 146.7237, MAPE: 2.1133, R 2 : 0.8634). PSO-MiLSTM enriches and complements the methodological research content of calibrating the time-series predictive analysis of infectious diseases using multi-source data, and can be used as a brand-new benchmark for the analysis of influencing factors and trend prediction of infectious diseases at the public health level in the future, as well as providing a reference for incidence rate prediction of infectious diseases.

Abstract Background The leading cause of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) is diabetic nephropathy (DN). Podocyte damage is an early event in the development of DN. Currently, there is no effective treatment strategy that can slow the progression of DN or reverse its onset. The role of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) transplantation in diabetes and its complications has been extensively studied, and diabetic nephropathy has been a major focus. Irbesartan exerts reno-protective effects independent of lowering blood pressure, can reduce the incidence of proteinuria in rats, and is widely used clinically. However, it remains undetermined whether the combined utilization of the angiotensin II receptor antagonist irbesartan and MSCs could enhance efficacy in addressing DN. Methods A commonly used method for modeling type 2 diabetic nephropathy (T2DN) was established using a high-fat diet and a single low-dose injection of STZ (35 mg/kg). The animals were divided into the following 5 groups: (1) the control group (CON), (2) the diabetic nephropathy group (DN), (3) the mesenchymal stem cells treatment group (MSCs), (4) the irbesartan treatment group (Irb), and (5) the combined administration group (MSC + Irb). MSCs (2 × 106 cells/rat) were injected every 10 days through the tail vein for a total of three injections; irbesartan (30 mg/kg/d) was administered by gavage. Additionally, the safety and homing of mesenchymal stem cells were verified using positron emission tomography (PET) imaging. Results The combination treatment significantly reduced the UACR, kidney index, IGPTT, HOMA-IR, BUN, serum creatine, and related inflammatory factor levels and significantly improved renal function parameters and the expression of proteins related to glomerular podocyte injury in rats. Moreover, MSCs can homing target to damaged kidneys. Conclusions Compared to the administration of MSCs or irbesartan alone, the combination of MSCs and irbesartan exerted better protective effects on glomerular podocyte injury, providing new ideas for the clinical application of mesenchymal stem cells.

Abstract Background Associations between perceived and actual risk of HIV infection and HIV prevention services uptake are inconclusive. This study aimed to evaluate the discrepancy between the perceived and actual HIV risk, and quantify the associations between perceived and actual risk of HIV infection and three HIV prevention services utilization among men who have sex with men (MSM) in Shandong province, China. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted in Shandong province in June 2021. Participants were eligible if they were born biologically male, aged 18 years or older, had negative or unknown HIV status, and had sex with men in the past year. Participants were recruited online. The discrepancy between their perceived and actual risk of HIV infection was evaluated by calculating the Kappa value. Bayesian model averaging was used to assess the associations between perceived and actual risk of HIV infection and HIV prevention services uptake. Results A total of 1136 MSM were recruited, most of them were 30 years old or younger (59.9%), single (79.5%), with at least college education level (74.7%). Most participants (97.4%) perceived that they had low risk of HIV infection, and 14.1% were assessed with high actual risk. ObjectiveTo explore the intervention effects of different social media platforms on improving the knowledge of human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) diagnosis and treatment among HIV-positive men who have sex with men (MSM). MethodsA total of 288 HIV-positive MSM were recruited at the Shandong Provincial Public Health Clinical Center from October to December 2020, and according to their preference, the MSM were divided into three groups to receive information on the knowledge and practice of HIV/AIDS diagnosis and treatment via short message service (SMS), WeChat, and the combination of WeChat and QQ group in six months. The generalized estimating equation used to analyze and compare the intervention effects of the interventions via different social media on the overall knowledge score of HIV/AIDS diagnosis and treatment among the all and subgroups of the participants. ResultsThe mean age of the participants was 34.67 ± 9.22 years. Six-month follow-up showed that the total score of HIV/AIDS diagnosis and treatment knowledge in the WeChat intervention group was 0.38 points higher than that in the SMS intervention group (P = 0.01), and there was no significant difference between the results of the other intervention groups (P > 0.05); in the subgroup with high school education and below, WeChat intervention (P = 0.018), WeChat and QQ group intervention (P = 0.002) were better than SMS intervention in improving the total score of AIDS diagnosis and treatment knowledge. ConclusionCompared with SMS intervention, WeChat intervention significantly improved the HIV/AIDS diagnosis and treatment knowledge score of HIV-positive MSM, and WeChat can be used as the main media for HIV-positive MSM to popularize HIV/AIDS knowledge in the future.

Abstract Light-induced spin currents with the faster response is essential for the more efficient information transmission and processing. Herein, we systematically explore the effect of light illumination energy and direction on the light-induced spin currents in the W/Y3Fe5O12 heterojunction. Light-induced spin currents can be clearly categorized into two types. One is excited by the low light intensity, which mainly involves the photo-generated spin current from spin photovoltaic effect. The other is caused by the high light intensity, which is the light-thermally induced spin current and mainly excited by spin Seebeck effect. Under low light-intensity illumination, light-thermally induced temperature gradient is very small so that spin Seebeck effect can be neglected. Furthermore, the mechanism on spin photovoltaic effect is fully elucidated, where the photo-generated spin current in Y3Fe5O12 mainly originates from the process of spin precession induced by photons. These findings provide some deep insights into the origin of light-induced spin current.

Abstract Background Myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) promote tumor growth, metastasis, and lead to immunotherapy resistance. Studies revealed that miRNAs are also expressed in MDSCs and promote the immunosuppressive function of MDSCs. Currently, few studies have been reported on inducible cellular microvesicle delivery of nucleic acid drugs targeting miRNA in MDSCs for the treatment of malignant tumors. Results and conclusion In this study, we designed an artificial DNA named G-quadruplex-enhanced circular single-stranded DNA-9 (G4-CSSD9), that specifically adsorbs the miR-9 sequence. Its advanced DNA folding structure, rich in tandem repeat guanine (G-quadruplex), also provides good stability. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) were prepared into nanostructured vesicles by membrane extrusion. The MSC microvesicles-encapsulated G4-CSSD9 (MVs@G4-CSSD9) was delivered into MDSCs, which affected the downstream transcription and translation process, and reduced the immunosuppressive function of MDSCs, so as to achieve the purpose of treating melanoma. Abstract Cholesterol metabolism reprogramming is one of the significant characteristics of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Cholesterol increases the risk of epithelial–mesenchymal transition (EMT) in cancer. Sterol O-acyltransferases 1 (SOAT1) maintains the cholesterol homeostasis. However, the exact mechanistic contribution of SOAT1 to EMT in HCC remains unclear. Here we demonstrated that SOAT1 positively related to poor prognosis of HCC, EMT markers and promoted cell migration and invasion in vitro, which was mediated by the increased cholesterol in plasmalemma and cholesterol esters accumulation. Furthermore, we reported that SOAT1 disrupted cholesterol metabolism homeostasis to accelerate tumorigenesis and development in HCC xenograft and NAFLD-HCC. Also, we detected that nootkatone, a sesquiterpene ketone, inhibited EMT by targeting SOAT1 in vitro and in vivo. Collectively, our finding indicated that SOAT1 promotes EMT and contributes to hepatocarcinogenesis by increasing cholesterol esterification, which is suppressed efficiently by nootkatone. This study demonstrated that SOAT1 is a potential biomarker and therapeutic target in NAFLD-HCC and SOAT1-targeting inhibitors are expected to be the potential new therapeutic treatment for HCC.

Somatosensory abnormalities are commonly recognized as diagnostic criteria in autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and may also exist in individuals with autistic traits. The present research included two studies to explore the painful and non-painful sensation and their cognitive-neurological mechanisms of individuals with autistic traits. Study 1 included 358 participants to assess the relationship between autistic traits and pain/non-pain sensitivities using questionnaires: the Autism Spectrum Quotient (AQ), the Pain Sensitivity Questionnaire, and the Highly Sensitive Person Scale, respectively. Study 1 found that autistic traits were positively correlated with non-pain sensitivity, but not associated with pain sensitivity. Study 2 recruited 1,167 participants whose autistic traits were assessed using the AQ. Subsequently, thirty-three participants who scored within the top 10% and bottom 10% on the AQ were selected into High-AQ and Low-AQ groups, respectively, to explore the cognitive-neural responses of individuals with autistic traits to both painful and non-painful stimuli with event-related potential (ERP) technology. Results of Study 2 showed that the High-AQ group showed higher intensity ratings, more negative emotional reactions, and larger N1 amplitudes than the Low-AQ group to the non-painful stimuli, but no difference of response to the painful stimuli was found between High-AQ and Low-AQ groups. These findings suggest that individuals with autistic traits may experience enhanced non-painful sensation but intact painful sensation.

Abstract Background In HBV-associated HCC, T cells often exhibit a state of functional exhaustion, which prevents the immune response from rejecting the tumor and allows HCC to progress. Moreover, polymerase-specific T cells exhibit more severe T-cell exhaustion compared to core-specific T cells. However, whether HBV DNA polymerase drives HBV-specific CD8+ T cell exhaustion in HBV-related HCC remains unclear. Methods We constructed a Huh7 cell line stably expressing HA-HBV-DNA-Pol and applied co-culture systems to clarify its effect on immune cell function. We also examined how HBV-DNA-Pol modulated PD-L1 expression in HCC cells. In addition, HBV-DNA-Pol transgenic mice were used to elucidate the underlying mechanism of HBV-DNA-Pol/PD-L1 axis-induced T cell exhaustion. Results Biochemical analysis showed that Huh7 cells overexpressing HBV-DNA-Pol inhibited the proliferation, activation, and cytokine secretion of Jurkat cells and that this effect was dependent on their direct contact. A similar inhibitory effect was observed in an HCC mouse model. PD-L1 was brought to our attention during screening. Our results showed that the overexpression of HBV-DNA-Pol upregulated PD-L1 mRNA and protein expression. PD-L1 antibody blockade reversed the inhibitory effect of Huh7 cells overexpressing HBV-DNA-Pol on Jurkat cells. Mechanistically, HBV-DNA-Pol interacts with PARP1, thereby inhibiting the nuclear translocation of PARP1 and further upregulating PD-L1 expression. Conclusions Our findings suggest that HBV-DNA-Pol can act as a regulator of PD-L1 in HCC, thereby directing anti-cancer immune evasion, which further provides a new idea for the clinical treatment of liver cancer.

Abstract Background Panax notoginseng (Burk) F. H. Chen is one of the most famous Chinese traditional medicinal plants. The taproot is the main organ producing triterpenoid saponins, and its development is directly linked to the quality and yield of the harvested P. notoginseng. However, the mechanisms underlying the dynamic metabolic changes occurring during taproot development of P. notoginseng are unknown. Results We carried out metabolomic and transcriptomic analyses to investigate metabolites and gene expression during the development of P. notoginseng taproots. The differentially accumulated metabolites included amino acids and derivatives, nucleotides and derivatives, and lipids in 1-year-old taproots, flavonoids and terpenoids in 2- and 3-year-old taproots, and phenolic acids in 3-year-old taproots. The differentially expressed genes (DEGs) are related to phenylpropanoid biosynthesis, metabolic pathway and biosynthesis of secondary metabolites at all three developmental stages. Integrative analysis revealed that the phenylpropanoid biosynthesis pathway was involved in not only the development of but also metabolic changes in P. notoginseng taproots. Moreover, significant accumulation of triterpenoid saponins in 2- and 3-year-old taproots was highly correlated with the up-regulated expression of cytochrome P450s and uridine diphosphate-dependent glycosyltransferases genes. Additionally, a gene encoding RNase-like major storage protein was identified to play a dual role in the development of P. notoginseng taproots and their triterpenoid saponins synthesis. Conclusions These results elucidate the molecular mechanism underlying the accumulation of and change relationship between primary and secondary metabolites in P. notoginseng taproots, and provide a basis for the quality control and genetic improvement of P. notoginseng.

Abstract Objective To investigate the association between circulating secretoneurin (SN) and angiographic coronary collateralization in stable angina patients with chronic coronary total occlusion (CTO). Methods SN concentrations in serum were measured in 641 stable angina patients with CTO by radioimmunoassay. The status of coronary collaterals from the contra-lateral vessel was visually estimated using the Rentrop grading system, and was categorized into poor (grade 0 or 1) or good (grade 2 or 3) collateralization. Sorafenib resistance greatly restricts its clinical application in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Numerous studies have reported that ID1 exerts a crucial effect in cancer initiation and development. Our previous research revealed an inhibitory role of ID1 in sorafenib resistance. However, the upstream regulatory mechanism of ID1 expression is unclear. Here, we discovered that ID1 expression is negatively correlated with promoter methylation, which is regulated by DNMT3B. Knockdown of DNMT3B significantly inhibited ID1 methylation status and resulted in an increase of ID1 expression. The demethylating agent 5‐aza‐2′‐deoxycytidine (5‐aza) remarkably upregulated ID1 expression. The combination of 5‐aza with sorafenib showed a synergistic effect on the inhibition of cell viability.

Ion-selective separation, especially Na+/Ca2+ separation, is of significant importance in the realms of biomimetic research and the fabrication of biomimetic devices, underscoring the pivotal role that sodium and calcium ions play in cellular metabolism. However, the analogous ionic radii and charge densities shared by sodium and calcium ions significantly impede their effective discrimination, presenting formidable challenges for the precise engineering of ion separation materials, such as separation membranes. In this study, a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) separation membrane hybridized with zirconium-based metal–organic frameworks (UiO-66, UiO-66-NO2 and UiO-66-NH2) was constructed. Through the meticulous design of the MOF functional groups, the material’s affinity for specific ions was modulated, thereby achieving efficient Na+/Ca2+ separation. Notably, the PDMS integrated with amino-modified Zr-MOF exhibited an efficacious selective separation of Na+ and Ca2+ ions. The interaction between the amino group of UiO-66-NH2 and Ca2+ gave rise to the observed superior selectivity toward Ca2+ cations and enhanced separation efficiencies of up to 64% compared to pristine PDMS for UiO-66-NH2-embedded membranes.

Internal tides serve as essential intermediate steps in the cascading of oceanic energy, playing a crucial role in oceanic mixing. M2 internal tides are the dominant tidal constituent in many oceanic regions, significantly influencing ocean dynamics. The Madagascar–Mascarene Region has high-energy internal tides, but due to a lack of observational studies, their propagation remains underexplored and warrants further investigation. In this study, we used satellite altimetry data to capture the sea surface manifestation of the first-mode M2 internal tides in the region. The results show that the Mascarene Plateau plays a key role in shaping the region’s uneven internal tide distribution. The Mascarene Strait is the most intense generation area, with an east-west energy flux of 1.42 GW. Using the internal tidal energy concentration index, we decomposed the internal tidal beams, finding the primary beam oriented at 148°. These beams propagate outward for over 800 km, with a maximum distance exceeding 1000 km. Geostrophic currents intensify the northward refraction of westward-propagating internal tides in the Mascarene Basin, particularly between 15°S and 20°S.

The Lofoten Vortex (LV), which is identified as a quasi-permanent anticyclonic eddy, strengthens through continuous merging with external anticyclonic eddies. Our investigation used the Lagrangian method to monitor the LV on a daily basis. Utilizing satellite altimeter data, we conducted multi-year tracking and statistical analysis of merging events involving the LV. The results indicate a characteristic radius of approximately 42.72 km and a mean vorticity at the eddy center of approximately −2.23 × 10−5 s−1. The eddy exhibits oscillatory motion within the sea basin depression, centered at 70°N, 3°E, characterized by counterclockwise trajectories between 0.5°E and 6°E and between 69°N and 70.5°N. There are two types of merging events: fusion events (55%), in which eddies of similar strengths interact within a closed flow line and then merge to form a new eddy; and absorption events (45%), in which the stronger LV absorbs the weaker anticyclonic eddies without destroying the structure of the LV itself. The nodes where strong vorticity advection occurs correspond to the nodes where merging occurs, suggesting that their effect on merging can be well characterized by the vorticity advection time series. We also observe occasional fluctuations and substitution events involving the LV and external anticyclonic eddies, suggesting a dynamic succession rather than a single vortex entity.

Sweat is considered the most promising candidate to replace conventional blood samples for noninvasive sensing. There are many tools and optical and electrochemical methods that can be used for detecting sweat biomarkers. Electrochemical methods are known for their simplicity and cost-effectiveness. However, they need to be optimized in terms of selectivity and catalytic activity. Therefore, electrode modifiers such as nanostructures and metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) or combinations of them were examined for boosting the performance of the electrochemical sensors. The MOF structures can be prepared by hydrothermal/solvothermal, sonochemical, microwave synthesis, mechanochemical, and electrochemical methods. Additionally, MOF nanostructures can be prepared by controlling the synthesis conditions or mixing bulk MOFs with nanoparticles (NPs). In this review, we spotlight the previously examined MOF-based nanostructures as well as promising ones for the electrochemical determination of sweat biomarkers. The presence of NPs strongly improves the electrical conductivity of MOF structures, which are known for their poor conductivity. Specifically, Cu-MOF and Co-MOF nanostructures were used for detecting sweat biomarkers with the lowest detection limits. Different electrochemical methods, such as amperometric, voltammetric, and photoelectrochemical, were used for monitoring the signal of sweat biomarkers. Overall, these materials are brilliant electrode modifiers for the determination of sweat biomarkers.

Rhododendron resources are abundant in China, and hybridization breeding technology is the primary method for cultivating Rhododendron varieties. In order to optimize the utilization of wild Rhododendron resources for distant hybridization, this study took three horticultural varieties of Rhododendron subgenus Tsutsusi and the Rhododendron decorum Franch. of the subgenus Hymenanthes as the research objects, and the cross-compatibility between subgenera was analyzed from the aspects of pollen tube growth and ovary and seed development. At the same time, the statistics of ovary swelling rate and fruit bearing rate, numbers of capsule seeds, 1000 seed weight of hybrid seeds, germination rate, green seedling rate, and other indexes were analyzed to comprehensively evaluate hybrid fertility. The results showed that there was obvious pre-fertilization and post-fertilization barriers existing in the hybridization of Rhododendron × hybridum hort. and R. decorum. During the growth of pollen tubes, a large amount of callus appeared, which led to the entanglement, distortion, and abnormal development of the pollen tubes; only part of the pollen tubes entered into the ovary or ovule. The pre-fertilization barriers can be overcome by early pollination and delayed pollination. According to the observation of the ovary paraffin section, 45 d after pollination, the seed was shriveled and developed abnormally. The comprehensive evaluation of hybrid fertility showed that ‘Sima’ × R. decorum was fertile, ‘Yin Taohong’ × R. decorum was a weakly fertile, and ‘Little Taohong’ × R. decorum was sterile. This study provided a scientific basis for intergeneric hybridization breeding between the subgenus Tsutsusi and the subgenus Hymenanthes.

The unique advantage of optical-resolution photoacoustic microscopy (OR-PAM) is its ability to achieve high-resolution microvascular imaging without exogenous agents. This ability has excellent potential in the study of tissue microcirculation. However, tracing and monitoring microvascular morphology and hemodynamics in tissues is challenging because the segmentation of microvascular in OR-PAM images is complex due to the high density, structure complexity, and low contrast of vascular structures. Various microvasculature extraction techniques have been developed over the years but have many limitations: they cannot consider both thick and thin blood vessel segmentation simultaneously, they cannot address incompleteness and discontinuity in microvasculature, there is a lack of open-access datasets for DL-based algorithms. We have developed a novel segmentation approach to extract vascularity in OR-PAM images using a deep learning network incorporating a weak signal attention mechanism and multi-scale perception (WSA-MP-Net) model. The proposed WSA network focuses on weak and tiny vessels, while the MP module extracts features from different vessel sizes. In addition, Hessian-matrix enhancement is incorporated into the pre-and post-processing of the input and output data of the network to enhance vessel continuity. We constructed normal vessel (NV-ORPAM, 660 data pairs) and tumor vessel (TV-ORPAM, 1168 data pairs) datasets to verify the performance of the proposed method. We developed a semi-automatic annotation algorithm to obtain the ground truth for our network optimization. We applied our optimized model successfully to monitor glioma angiogenesis in mouse brains, thus demonstrating the feasibility and excellent generalization ability of our model. Compared to previous works, our proposed WSA-MP-Net extracts a significant number of microvascular while maintaining vessel continuity and signal fidelity. In quantitative analysis, the indicator values of our method improved by about 1.3% to 25.9%. We believe our proposed approach provides a promising way to extract a complete and continuous microvascular network of OR-PAM and enables its use in many microvascular-related biological studies and medical diagnoses.

Objective This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of instant versus text messaging intervention (TMI) on antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence among men who have sex with men (MSM) living with HIV. Methods This study was conducted in an infectious disease hospital of Jinan, China from October 2020 to June 2021, using non-randomized concurrent controlled design to compare the effectiveness of instant messaging intervention (IMI) versus TMI. The intervention strategies (health messaging, medication reminder, and peer education) and contents were consistent between the two groups, and the difference was service delivery method and type of information. The primary outcome was the proportion of achieving optimal ART adherence, defined as never missing any doses and delayed any doses more than 1 hour. Results A total of 217 participants (including 72 in TMI group and 145 in IMI group) were included in the study. The proportion of achieving optimal adherence was higher in IMI group than TMI group at the first follow-up (90.2% versus 77.6%, p = 0.021) and second follow-up (86.5% versus 76.6%, p = 0.083). The effect of IMI versus TMI on improving ART adherence was found not to be statistically significant (risk ratio (RR) = 1.93, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.95–3.94) in complete-case analysis. However, when excluding participants who did not adhere to the interventions, a significant improvement was observed (RR = 2.77, 95%CI: 1.21–6.38). More participants in IMI group expressed highly rated satisfaction to the intervention services than those in TMI group (67.3% versus 50.0%). Conclusions The IMI demonstrated superior efficacy over TMI in improving ART adherence and satisfaction with intervention services. It is suggested that future digital health interventions targeting ART adherence should prioritize instant messaging with multimedia information in areas with Internet access. Trial registration The study was registered at the Chinese Clinical Trial Register (ChiCTR), with number [ChiCTR2000041282].

Universities and colleges play a pivotal role in the pursuit of a future that is sustainable through their pedagogical efforts and the execution of state-of-the-art research endeavors aimed at mitigating the effects of climate change. Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) serve as crucial catalysts in advancing sustainable development. HEIs are increasingly embracing precise measures to reduce their carbon footprint (CF) while also educating students on global sustainability. These nano-methods provide a quantitative framework for assessing a campus's sustainability efforts in line with Green Campus (GC) initiatives to lower carbon emissions align with GC goals. This study employs K-means clustering to analyze the integration of green and low-carbon principles in higher education political and ideological studies. Its goal is to identify patterns, assess teaching effectiveness, and improve sustainability education, aligning with Green Campus initiatives to enhance institutional contributions to sustainable growth through informed pedagogical strategies. Input data includes curriculum content, teaching methods, student engagement, and institutional goals related to sustainability. Seeking to improve sustainability education align with Green Campus initiatives, higher education can strategically enhance their contributions to long-term sustainability and growth through effective pedagogical approaches. Cluster 3 has the lowest WCSS value of 1200, indicating tighter cohesion and less variability within this cluster compared to Cluster 1 (1500) and Cluster 2 (1800). Cluster 3 stands out with the highest silhouette score of 0.7, suggesting well-defined and distinct clusters, while Cluster 2 has the lowest score of 0.4, indicating some overlap or ambiguity in data points. Cluster 1 has the lowest Davies-Bouldin Index of 0.4, implying better separation between clusters compared to Cluster 2 (0.6) and Cluster 3 (0.5). Cluster 3 is well-defined and cohesive, showing strong integration of green practices. Cluster 1 displays good separation and cohesion, while Cluster 2 requires refinement due to potential overlap in sustainability integration.

ABSTRACTCodonopsis pilosula is a perennial herbaceous liana with medicinal value. It is critical to promote Codonopsis pilosula growth through effective and sustainable methods, and the use of plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) is a promising candidate. In this study, we isolated a PGPB, Klebsiella michiganensis LDS17, that produced a highly active 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate deaminase from the Codonopsis pilosula rhizosphere. The strain exhibited multiple plant growth-promoting properties. The antagonistic activity of strain LDS17 against eight phytopathogenic fungi was investigated, and the results showed that strain LDS17 had obvious antagonistic effects on Rhizoctonia solani, Colletotrichum camelliae, Cytospora chrysosperma, and Phomopsis macrospore with growth inhibition rates of 54.22%, 49.41%, 48.89%, and 41.11%, respectively. Inoculation of strain LDS17 not only significantly increased the growth of Codonopsis pilosula seedlings but also increased the invertase and urease activities, the number of culturable bacteria, actinomycetes, and fungi, as well as the functional diversity of microbial communities in the rhizosphere soil of the seedlings. Heavy metal (HM) resistance tests showed that LDS17 is resistant to copper, zinc, and nickel. Whole-genome analysis of strain LDS17 revealed the genes involved in IAA production, siderophore synthesis, nitrogen fixation, P solubilization, and HM resistance. We further identified a gene (koyR) encoding a plant-responsive LuxR solo in the LDS17 genome. Klebsiella michiganensis LDS17 may therefore be useful in microbial fertilizers for Codonopsis pilosula. The identification of genes related to plant growth and HM resistance provides an important foundation for future analyses of the molecular mechanisms underlying the plant growth promotion and HM resistance of LDS17.IMPORTANCEWe comprehensively evaluated the plant growth-promoting characteristics and heavy metal (HM) resistance ability of the LDS17 strain, as well as the effects of strain LDS17 inoculation on the Codonopsis pilosula seedling growth and the soil qualities in the Codonopsis pilosula rhizosphere. We conducted whole-genome analysis and identified lots of genes and gene clusters contributing to plant-beneficial functions and HM resistance, which is critical for further elucidating the plant growth-promoting mechanism of strain LDS17 and expanding its application in the development of plant growth-promoting agents used in the environment under HM stress.

Background: Renal fibrosis is the main cause of the development of diabetic kidney disease (DKD). ACSL1 plays an important role in colon cancer and liver fibrosis. Methods: We screened ACSL1 by proteomics analysis and then verified the expression of ACSL1 in the urine of diabetic nephropathy patients by WB and ELISA. Then, a total of 12 db/m and db/db mice were used to verify the association between renal fibrosis and ACSL1. Periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) staining, Masson staining, and immunostaining were performed for histological studies. The relationship between ACSL1 and renal fibrosis was studied by knocking down ACSL1 in cell experiments. Results: The expression of ACSL1 was significantly increased in the exfoliated urine cells and urine supernatant of diabetic nephropathy patients and was closely related to renal function. In addition, the expression of ACSL1 was significantly increased in the renal tissues of db/db mice with fibrosis. Knocking down ACSL1 in HK-2 cells was shown to reverse renal fibrosis induced by high glucose. Conclusions: We found a potential therapeutic target for preventing or ameliorating the progression of DKD fibrosis. Reducing ACSL1 expression may be a new strategy for the treatment of renal fibrosis caused by DKD, which provides an experimental theoretical basis for new drug research. Resumen: Antecedentes: La fibrosis renal es la causa principal de desarrollo de nefropatía diabética (ND). ACSL1 juega un papel importante en el cáncer de colon y la fibrosis hepática. Métodos: Cribamos ACSL1 mediante análisis proteómico, verificando seguidamente la expresión de ACSL1 en la orina de los pacientes con nefropatía diabética mediante WB y ELISA. A continuación, utilizamos un total de 12 ratones db/m y db/db para verificar la asociación entre fibrosis renal y ACSL1. Se realizaron tinciones PAS (Periodic acid-Schiff), de Masson e inmunotinción para los estudios histológicos. Estudiamos la relación entre ACSL1 y fibrosis renal aplicando la técnica de knockdown a ACSL1 en los experimentos celulares. Resultados: La expresión de ACSL1 se incrementó significativamente en las células de orina exfoliada y el sobrenadante de orina de los pacientes con nefropatía diabética y estuvo estrechamente relacionada con la función renal. Además, la expresión de ACSL1 se incrementó significativamente en los tejidos renales de los ratones db/db con fibrosis. La realización de knockdown a ACSL1 en las células HK-2 reflejó una reversión de la fibrosis renal inducida por la alta tasa de glucosa. Conclusiones: Encontramos un objetivo terapéutico potencial para prevenir o mejorar la progresión de la fibrosis en la ND. Reducir la expresión de ACSL1 puede suponer una nueva estrategia para el tratamiento de la fibrosis renal causada por la ND, lo cual aporta una base teórica experimental para la investigación de un nuevo fármaco.

Abstract Achieving low-carbon development of the cement industry in the developing countries is fundamental to global emissions abatement, considering the local construction industry’s rapid growth. However, there is currently a lack of systematic and accurate accounting and projection of cement emissions in developing countries, which are characterized with lower basic economic country condition. Here, we provide bottom-up quantifications of emissions from global cement production and reveal a regional shift in the main contributors to global cement CO2 emissions. The study further explores cement emissions over 2020-2050 that correspond to different housing and infrastructure conditions and emissions mitigation options for all developing countries except China. We find that cement emissions in developing countries except China will reach 1.4-3.8 Gt in 2050 (depending on different industrialization trajectories), compared to their annual emissions of 0.7 Gt in 2018. The optimal combination of low-carbon measures could contribute to reducing annual emissions by around 65% in 2050 and cumulative emissions by around 48% over 2020-2050. The efficient technological paths towards a low carbon future of cement industry vary among the countries and infrastructure scenarios. Our results are essential to understanding future emissions patterns of the cement industry in the developing countries and can inform policies in the cement sector that contribute to meeting the climate targets set out in the Paris Agreement.

Abstract Emerging economies, low- and middle-income countries experiencing rapid population and GDP growth, face the challenge of improving their living standards while stabilizing CO2 emissions to meet net-zero goals. In this study, we quantify the CO2 emissions required for achieving decent living standards (DLS) in emerging economies. The results show that, compared to other regions, achieving DLS in emerging Asian and African economies will result in more additional CO2 emissions, particularly in the DLS indicators of Mobility and Electricity. Achievement of DLS in emerging economies will result in 8.6 Gt of additional CO2 emissions, which should not jeopardize global climate targets. However, a concerning trend arises as more than half of the emerging economies (62 out of 121) will face substantial challenges in aligning their expected emission growth for achieving DLS with their national emission mitigation targets.

Abstract Background Pterygium is a common ocular surface disease. Pterygium combined with corneal perforation is rare. Case presentation A 28-year-old female patient visited our outpatient clinic due to sudden onset of blurred vision and increased tearing in her left eye. The visual acuity was 1.0 OD and intraocular pressure (IOP) of 19.5 mmHg for the right eye with no significant abnormalities found in the anterior and posterior segments. The visual acuity of her left eye was 0.06, and IOP was 6.2 mmHg. A triangular vascular membranous tissue was seen in her left eye below the nose growing into the cornea and the pupil area was not touched. Slit-lamp examination revealed a tiny round corneal perforation in 8 o’clock position of the lesion area. Hospital diagnosis was given as pterygium combined with corneal perforation. The patient was treated with levofloxacin eye drops and autologous serum-based eye drops. Conclusions We report a rare case of pterygium combined with corneal perforation. Perforation is a very rare complication of pterygium. This patient received proper treatment and good result was seen. This article aimed to improve clinicians’ understanding of pterygium.

Land subsidence has become a serious issue in Cangzhou for a long time. In order to make reasonable use of groundwater resources, it is necessary to establish a warning groundwater level under the premise of controlling the development of land subsidence. How to quantitatively determine the critical gorundwater level (CWL) for comprehensive control of land subsidence? In allusion to this scientific problem, this paper takes the soil samples of three typical settlement areas in Cangzhou as the research object, and analyzes the formation consolidation characteristics. By correlating the stratum thickness, we improve the method of calculating the CWL with the previous consolidation pressure. Based on the monitoring data of land subsidence and groundwater level in Cangzhou for many years, the comprehensive quantitative evaluation of the CWL in Cangzhou are carried out. The results show that the soil within a depth ranging from 0 to 150 m in Cangzhou is normally consolidated or under-consolidated, and the soil below the depth of 150 m is generally over-consolidated. The inelastic water release deformation is an important factor affecting the change of land subsidence rate in this area. Using the improved method, the CWL in Cangzhou, Suning and Dongguang is 66.8 m, 67.5 m and 67.8 m, respectively. Based on the data of the cumulative land subsidence and groundwater level change in the urban of Cangzhou, we obtain the exponential function relationship between the cumulative land subsidence and groundwater level. The subsidence rate is taken as the index, and the critical groundwater level in the urban of Cangzhou ranges from 65 to 70 m. On the basis of verifying the consistency of the calculation results of the two methods, we determined 65 m as the critical groundwater level for the prevention and control measures of land subsidence in Cangzhou. The results provide a reliable basis for the local government to formulate a reasonable groundwater exploitation plan.

IntroductionHepatitis E virus (HEV), with heightened virulence in immunocompromised individuals and pregnant women, is a pervasive threat in developing countries. A globaly available vaccine against HEV is currently lacking.MethodsWe designed a multi-epitope vaccine based on protein ORF2 and ORF3 of HEV using immunoinformatics.ResultsThe vaccine comprised 23 nontoxic, nonallergenic, soluble peptides. The stability of the docked peptide vaccine-TLR3 complex was validated by molecular dynamic simulations. The induction of effective cellular and humoral immune responses by the multi-peptide vaccine was verified by simulated immunization.DiscussionThese findings provide a foundation for future HEV vaccine studies.

Universal access to clean fuels in household use is one explicit indicator of sustainable development while currently still billions of people rely on solid fuels for daily cooking. Despite of the recognized clean transition trend in general, disparities in household energy mix in different activities (e.g. cooking and heating) and historical trends remain to be elucidated. In this study, we revealed the historical changing trend of the disparity in household cooking and heating activities and associated carbon emissions in rural China. The study found that the poor had higher total direct energy consumption but used less modern energy, especially in cooking activities, in which the poor consumed 60 % more energy than the rich. The disparity in modern household energy use decreased over time, but conversely the disparity in total residential energy consumption increased due to the different energy elasticities as income increases. Though per-capita household CO2 and Black Carbon (BC) emissions were decreasing under switching to modern energies, the disparity in household CO2 and BC deepened over time, and the low-income groups emitted ∼ 10 kg CO2 more compared to the high-income population. Relying solely on spontaneous clean cooking transition had limited impacts in reducing disparities in household energy and carbon emissions, whereas improving access to modern energy had substantial potential to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions and its disparity. Differentiated energy-related policies to promote high-efficiency modern heating energies affordable for the low-income population should be developed to reduce the disparity, and consequently benefit human health and climate change equally.

Background: Social isolation can be particularly challenging for individuals with high autistic traits who struggle with social interactions. The COVID-19 pandemic led to increased isolation, exacerbating stress for those who may have difficulty in connecting with others. This study aimed to explore the relationship between autistic traits and stress associated with social isolation. Methods: A sample of 1597 Chinese adults completed measures of autistic traits, the stress of social isolation, psychological inflexibility and core self-evaluation, during an epidemic prevention and control period of COVID-19 in Chongqing, China. Measures included the Autism-Spectrum Quotient, Coronavirus Stress Measure, Acceptance and Action Questionnaire-II, and Core Self-Evaluation Scale. Results: Autistic traits were positively correlated with the stress of social isolation, which was mediated by the chain effect of core self-evaluation and psychological inflexibility. individuals with high autistic traits reported significantly higher stress than individuals with low autistic traits. Limitations: This was a cross-sectional study, which limits causal inference. In addition, data were self-reported, which may cause methodological effects. Finally, this study was conducted during China's quarantine policy and external validation of the findings is required. Conclusions: Autistic traits are positively associated with the stress of social isolation. Autistic traits affected core self-evaluation first, and psychological inflexibility subsequently, leading to the stress of social isolation. individuals with high autistic traits tended to experience higher levels of stress during pandemic quarantines. The findings provide useful evidence for developing interventions and implementing preventive measures to reduce stress in individuals with high autistic traits and autism spectrum disorder.

With the gradual deepening of China’s aging population, the status quo of “getting old before getting rich” has brought great challenges to the problem of elderly care. In this paper, we take the supply chain management of elderly services as the core and optimize the service cost and service quality through a two-layer planning model to obtain the best decision-making scheme. A particle Swarm Algorithm (PSO) is proposed to solve the model with intelligent evolution, and an incentive mechanism is established on the basis of the senior care supply chain, which maximizes its revenue by relying on the contract. Finally, by improving the SCORE model, data analysis and dynamic simulation of the senior care service supply chain can be carried out. The results show that the supply chain of senior care service reaches the optimization when the ratio of the capital input of community, institution and home is 0.2:0.2:0.6, and its equilibrium ratio stabilizes at about 96.0%:4%, which effectively alleviates the current pressure of senior care service. This study realizes the coordination of information and interests in the supply chain of community senior care service, which is of great practical significance for the innovation of healthy senior care service.

Abstract International trade affects CO2 emissions by redistributing production activities to places where the emission intensities are different from the place of consumption. This study focuses on the net emission change as the result of the narrowing gap in emission intensities between the exporter and importer. Here we show that the relocation of production activities from the global North (developed countries) to the global South (developing countries) in the early 2000s leads to an increase in global emissions due to the higher emission intensities in China and India. The related net emissions are about one-third of the total emissions embodied in the South-North trade. However, the narrowing emission intensities between South-North and the changing trade patterns results in declining net emissions in trade in the past decade. The convergence of emission intensities in the global South alleviates concerns that increasing South-South trade would lead to increased carbon leakage and carbon emissions. The mitigation opportunity to green the supply chain lies in sectors such as electricity, mineral products and chemical products, but calls for a universal assessment of emission intensities and concerted effort.

The Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) is a national initiative aimed at building a world-class city cluster in China and whose trends, socioeconomic drivers of CO2 emissions, and mitigation pathways are of great significance to the high-quality regional economic development. This study compiled the CO2 emission inventories of the GBA from 2000 to 2019 and explored the key drivers of CO2 emissions using the logarithmic mean Divisia index method. The results showed that CO2 emissions in GBA slowed significantly after 2017 and have already been decoupled from gross domestic product (GDP) growth. Economic growth and energy intensity are the major factors driving and inhibiting the increase in GBA’s CO2 emissions, respectively. The energy production and heavy manufacturing sectors have reduced their roles in driving the growth of GBA’s CO2 emissions. GBA achieved remarkable results in low-carbon development through industrial restructuring and upgrading. Industrial upgrades in Shenzhen and Hong Kong and technological advances in Shenzhen, Guangzhou, and Foshan have significantly curbed the growth in the GBA’s CO2 emissions. The heterogeneity of cities in the GBA greatly increases the complexity of formalizing the allocation of emission reduction tasks and developing a roadmap for regional carbon neutrality. Graded emission reduction strategies and carbon peaking and neutrality policy recommendations for GBA cities are proposed. This study provides a scientific basis for the development of an action program for carbon peaking and neutrality in GBA cities and low-carbon development plans for other cities and regions.

Abstract Internal solitary waves (ISWs) in the South China Sea (SCS) are considerably modulated by the background currents. In this study, a three-dimensional high-resolution non-hydrostatic model is configured to investigate how the Kuroshio influences the generation and evolution of ISWs in the northern SCS. Three runs are conducted, including one control experiment without the Kuroshio and two sensitivity experiments with the Kuroshio in different paths. In the Luzon Strait (LS), the Kuroshio reduces the westward baroclinic energy flux radiated into the SCS, resulting in weakened ISWs. In the SCS basin, the background currents further refract the ISWs. With the leaping Kuroshio, the A-waves have longer crest lines but lower amplitudes compared with those in the control run. In contrast, the B-waves are less affected by the leaping Kuroshio. In the presence of looping Kuroshio, the wave refraction caused by the intrusion currents in the SCS basin results in the weakest amplitudes and energy but the widest crest lines of ISWs. Moreover, the energy of the A-waves exhibits double-peak structure along the crest lines. The crest lines of the B-waves extend to 19.5° N, which are more south than those in summer. These results highlight the importance of the Kuroshio on the 3D features of ISWs in the SCS.

Abstract The inversion of remote sensing signatures of internal solitary waves (ISWs) can retrieve dynamic characteristics in the ocean interior. However, the presence of ubiquitous large‐amplitude ISWs poses challenges to the commonly used weakly nonlinear methods for parameter retrieval. Through laboratory experiments, we establish a relationship between surface features and internal characteristics of ISWs by the remote sensing imaging mechanism. The results demonstrate that strong nonlinearity significantly influences the retrieval of ISWs, primarily manifested in the calculation of wave‐induced velocities and the applicability of ISW solutions. A fully nonlinear model Dubreil–Jacotin–Long equation is used in the retrieval and has been tested under different conditions. Mooring observations indicate that the determination of ISW parameters from satellite images is affected by the complexity of in situ stratification, but additional remote sensing information such as surface velocities enables us to perform retrievals even if the real‐time measurement of pycnocline depth is not available.

Abstract The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) makes headway in constructing railway projects invested by China, yet related environmental impacts are rarely discussed. Here we quantify the carbon footprint of railway project construction (RPC) under the BRI and identify the drivers behind their variations to find possible carbon reduction pathways. Our results show that China‐invested overseas RPC in BRI countries induced 2,095.2 Mt CO2 emissions through the global supply chains during 2008–2017. Specifically, 73% of the carbon footprint relies on supply chains in BRI countries, and 27% spills over to other regions serving as the suppliers of global resources. Upgrading key industries' technological levels in BRI countries to China's average level can mitigate the carbon footprint by 77%. Once all industries achieve China's average technological level, nearly 90% of the carbon footprint can be avoided. The findings potentially provide valuable insights into achieving sustainable project construction in cross‐regional cooperation and promoting green development of the BRI.

ABSTRACTObjectives Multiple myeloma (MM) is a malignant disease characterized by a single clonal proliferation of B cell-derived plasma cells in the bone marrow. It is the second most common haematologic malignancy in adults. The objective of this retrospective study is to evaluate the diagnostic and prognostic value of haematologic parameters in MM.Methods The difference of NLR/ALB ratio (NAR) and NLR/HDL-C ratio (NHR) between the 151 newly diagnosed MM patients and 153 healthy controls was compared. According to NAR and NHR cutoff values obtained from the ROC curve, MM patients were divided into low group and high group. The differences in hematological parameters and survival time between the two groups were compared. Background Glycine soja Sieb. & Zucc. is the wild ancestor from which the important crop plant soybean was bred. G. soja provides important germplasm resources for the breeding and improvement of cultivated soybean crops, however the species is threatened by habitat loss and fragmentation, and is experiencing population declines across its natural range. Understanding the patterns of genetic diversity in G. soja populations can help to inform conservation practices. Methods In this study, we analyzed the genetic diversity and differentiation of G. soja at different sites and investigated the gene flow within the species. We obtained 147 G. soja accessions collected from 16 locations across the natural range of the species from China, Korea and Japan. Samples were analyzed using SLAF-seq (Specific-Locus Amplified Fragment Sequencing). Results We obtained a total of 56,489 highly consistent SNPs. Our results suggested that G. soja harbors relatively high diversity and that populations of this species are highly differentiated. The populations harboring high genetic diversity, especially KR, should be considered first when devising conservation plans for the protection of G. soja, and in situ protection should be adopted in KR. G. soja populations from the Yangtze River, the Korean peninsula and northeastern China have a close relationship, although these areas are geographically disconnected. Other populations from north China clustered together. Analysis of gene flow suggested that historical migrations of G. soja may have occurred from the south northwards across the East-Asia land-bridge, but not across north China. All G. soja populations could be divided into one of two lineages, and these two lineages should be treated separately when formulating protection policies.

Abstract An increasing number of high school students are inflicted by different degrees of mental disorders in learning, such as moodiness, learning difficulties, test anxiety, difficulty coping with frustration, etc., which are one of the factors leading to the inferiority of students. In the present study, the initial scale of inferiority compensation for high school students was developed through literature searching, expert evaluation, interviews, and an open scale. 1187 high school students were tested in different periods, after deleting an invalid 83 scales, including 461 copies of valid scale of exploratory factor analysis in the first stage and 643 copies of valid scale of confirmatory factor analysis in the second stage. The results showed that the inferiority compensation scale for high school students consisted of two sub-scale: self-compensation and others-compensation, ach two were composed of five dimensions including academic performance, physical fitness, social communication, appearance, and self-esteem. Confirmatory factor analysis showed that the total scale and the two sub-scale all had good structural validity (RMSEA≤0.08; CFI&IFI ≥ 0.9), and the combined reliability and values (such as the correlation coefficient of each dimension) of the two sub-scale were within the ideal range. With good reliability and validity (Cronbacα&KMO ≥ 0.90), and meeting the requirements of psychometrics, the scale can be used in the relevant research and practice of inferiority compensation for high school students.

Abstract Background Research on the relationship between disclosure of HIV status to male sexual partners (HIV disclosure) and quality of life (QOL) revealed complex and even contradictory results. The impact of HIV disclosure on various domains of QOL and the mediation effect between them are unclear. The purposes of this study were to explore the impact of HIV disclosure on QOL among men who have sex with men (MSM), and whether HIV treatment self-efficacy mediated these relationships. Methods The data came from a baseline survey on the design of a randomized control trial conducted in Shandong, China. A total of 579 MSM patients were included. SPSS 24.0 was used to conduct independent samples t test, one-way analysis of variance and nonparametric tests and the PROCESS macro was used to conduct mediation analysis. Results Among 579 participants, 16.06% disclosed their HIV infection status to their male sexual partners. The effect of HIV disclosure on QOL was mediated by treatment self-efficacy. Self-efficacy played partial mediating role in social relationships, meaning that HIV disclosure had both direct and indirect effects on this factor. In the overall QOL and domains of physical, psychological, independence, and environment, HIV disclosure had an indirect effect only through self-efficacy and no significant effect on the spirituality domain. Conclusions The results emphasize the importance of HIV disclosure and self-efficacy on the QOL of MSM patients and suggest that health care providers should assist MSM patients in deciding whether to disclose their HIV status during daily medical services.

The enteroinvasive bacterium Shigella flexneri is known as a highly host-adapted human pathogen. There had been no known other reservoirs reported until recently. Here 34 isolates obtained from animals (yaks, dairy cows and beef cattle) from 2016 to 2017 and 268 human S. flexneri isolates from China were sequenced to determine the relationships between animal and human isolates and infer the evolutionary history of animal-associated S. flexneri. The 18 animal isolates (15 yak and 3 beef cattle isolates) in PG1 were separated into 4 lineages, and the 16 animal isolates (1 yak, 5 beef cattle and 10 dairy cow isolates) in PG3 were clustered in 8 lineages. The most recent human isolates from China belonged to PG3 whereas Chinese isolates from the 1950s–1960s belonged to PG1. PG1 S. flexneri may has been transmitted to the yaks during PG1 circulation in the human population in China and has remained in the yak population since, while PG3 S. flexneri in animals were likely recent transmissions from the human population. Increased stability of the large virulence plasmid and acquisition of abundant antimicrobial resistance determinants may have enabled PG3 to expand globally and replaced PG1 in China. Our study confirms that animals may act as a reservoir for S. flexneri. Genomic analysis revealed the evolutionary history of multiple S. flexneri lineages in animals and humans in China. However, further studies are required to determine the public health threat of S. flexneri from animals.

Abstract Background Consistent and complete adherence is considered an essential requirement for patients on antiretroviral therapy (ART). This study aimed to evaluate the impact of ART duration on ART adherence, identify the trend of complete adherence, and compare the factors associated with ART adherence between short-term and long-term ART group among men who have sex with men (MSM) living with HIV in Jinan of China. Methods MSM living with HIV aged 18 or above and currently on ART were recruited from October to December 2020 using convenience sampling. Univariate and multivariable logistic regressions were used to evaluate the impact of ART duration on adherence and compare factors associated with ART adherence between subgroups. The Mann–Kendall test was used to identify the trend of complete adherence. Results A total of 585 participants were included in analysis, consisting of 352 on short-term ART (ART initiation ≤ 3 years) and 233 on long-term ART (ART initiation > 3 years). Significant difference of complete ART adherence between short-term and long-term ART group was detected (79.8% vs. 69.1%, P = 0.003). Multivariable analysis showed that men with longer ART duration were less likely to report complete ART adherence (AOR = 0.88, 95% CI 0.81–0.95). A descending trend of complete adherence was identified (Z = 1.787, P = 0.037). Alcohol use and lack of medication reminders were barriers to complete adherence for both of the subgroups. Conclusions Sustained efforts to encourage maintaining adherence for a lifetime are necessary, especially for those on long-term ART. Future interventions should be tailored to subgroups with different ART duration and individuals with specific characteristics.

Abstract China has set Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and carbon neutrality targets without providing expected industry‐specific technological details. By focusing on the steel and cement industries in China, this study analyzes the energy consumption of different technology routes, decarbonization pathways of innovative technologies, and the synergistic impact of air pollutants. The study finds that the incumbent technology routes for steel and cement production have limited carbon reductions, and the deployment of innovative technologies (carbon capture, utilization, and storage [CCUS], electrolytic‐ and hydrogen‐based, and scrap‐based technologies) need to be accelerated to achieve carbon neutrality targets. We find that the net‐zero emissions pathway relying upon innovative technologies needs less investment than the NDCs scenario. Furthermore, electric arc furnace deployment will be mainly concentrated in Jiangsu, Guangdong, and Sichuan, while CCUS should be mainly in Hebei, Shandong, Liaoning, and Jiangsu provinces. The increased electrification of innovative technologies in steel and cement requires a shift in energy inputs from fossil energy to electricity. A combination of strict climate change mitigation and air pollution control will have higher synergistic effects.

As the third pole of the world and Asia's water tower, the Tibetan Plateau experiences daily release of pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) due to increasing human activity. This study aimed to explore the potential relationship between the concentration and composition of PPCPs and human activity, by assessing the occurrence of PPCPs in areas of typical human activity on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and evaluating their ecological risk. The results indicate that 28 out of 30 substances were detected in concentrations ranging from less than 1 ng/L to hundreds of ng/L, with the average concentration of most PPCPs in the Tibet Autonomous Region being higher than that in Qinghai Province. Among the detected substances, CAF, NOR, CTC, CIP, TCN, OTC, AZN, and DOX accounted for over 90% of the total concentration. The emission sources of PPCPs were identified by analyzing the correlation coefficients of soil and water samples, with excess PPCPs used by livestock breeding discharged directly into soil and then into surface water through leaching or runoff. By comparing the concentration and composition of PPCPs with those in other regions, this study found that CIP, ENR, LOM, NOR, CTC, DOX, OTC, and TCN were the most commonly used PPCPs in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. To assess the ecological risk of PPCPs, organisms at different trophic levels, including algae, crustaceans, fish, and insects, were selected. The prediction of the no effect concentration of each PPCP showed that NOR, CTC, TCN, CAF, and CBZ may have deleterious effects on water biota. This study can assist in identifying the emission characteristics of PPCPs from different types and intensities of human activities, as well as their occurrence and fate during the natural decay of aquatic systems.

Background: Gynecological malignancies, such as endometrial cancer (EC) and uterine cancer are prevalent. Increased Acyl-CoA synthetase long-chain family member 1 (ACSL1) activity may contribute to aberrant lipid metabolism, which is a potential factor that contributes to the pathogenesis of endometrial cancer. This study aimed to elucidate the potential molecular mechanisms by which ACSL1 is involved in lipid metabolism in endometrial cancer, providing valuable insights for targeted therapeutic strategies. Methods: Xenograft mouse models were used to assess the effect of ACSL1 on the regulation of endometrial cancer progression. ACSL1 protein levels were assessed via immunohistochemistry and immunoblotting analysis. To assess the migratory potential of Ishikawa cells, wound-healing and Transwell invasion assays were performed. Changes in lipids in serum samples from mice with endometrial cancer xenotransplants were examined in an untargeted lipidomic study that combined multivariate statistical methods with liquid chromatography‒mass spectrometry (LC/MS). Results: Patient sample and tissue microarray data suggested that higher ACSL1 expression is strongly associated with the malignant progression of EC. Overexpression of ACSL1 enhances fatty acid β-oxidation and 5′-adenylate triphosphate (ATP) generation in EC cells, promoting cell proliferation and migration. Lipidomic analysis revealed that significant changes were induced by ACSL1, including changes to 28 subclasses of lipids and a total of 24,332 distinct lipids that were detected in both positive and negative ion modes. Moreover, pathway analysis revealed the predominant association of these lipid modifications with the AMPK/CPT1C/ATP pathway and fatty acid β-oxidation. Conclusions: This study indicates that ACSL1 regulates the AMPK/CPT1C/ATP pathway, which induces fatty acid β-oxidation, promotes proliferation and migration, and then leads to the malignant progression of EC.

Microplastics (MPs) as emerging contaminants have become a major global concern, however, the distribution and origin of MPs in Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP) and their impacts on ecosystem are poorly known. Hence, we systematically evaluated the profile of MPs on the representative metropolitan locations of Lhasa and Huangshui Rivers and the scenic sites of Namco and Qinghai Lake. The average abundance of MPs in the water samples was 7020 items/m3, which was 34 and 52 times higher than those for the sediment (206.7 items/m3) and soil samples (134.7 items/m3), respectively. Huangshui River had the highest levels, followed by Qinghai Lake, Lhasa River and Namco. Human activities rather than altitude and salinity impacted the distribution of MPs in those areas. Besides the consumption of plastic products by locals and tourists, laundry wastewater and exogenous tributary inputs, the unique prayer flag culture also contributed to the MPs emission in QTP. Notably, the stability and fragment of MPs were crucial for their fate. Multiple assessment models were employed to evaluate the risk of MPs. PERI model took MP concentration, background value and toxicity into account, comprehensively describing the risk differences of each site. The large PVC proportion in Qinghai Lake posed the highest risk. Furthermore, concerns should be raised about PVC, PE and PET in Lhasa and Huangshui Rivers, and PC in Namco Lake. Risk quotient suggested that aged MPs in sediments slowly released biotoxic DEHP and should be cleaned up promptly. The findings offer baseline data of MPs in QTP and ecological risks, providing important support for the prioritization of future control measures.
