Since the outbreak of COVID-19, a variety of vaccine platforms have been developed. Amongst these, inactivated vaccines have been authorized for emergency use or conditional marketing in many countries. To further enhance the protective immune responses in populations that have completed vaccination regimen, we investigated the immunogenic characteristics of different vaccine platforms and tried homologous or heterologous boost strategy post two doses of inactivated vaccines in a mouse model. Our results showed that the humoral and cellular immune responses induced by different vaccines when administered individually differ significantly. In particular, inactivated vaccines showed relatively lower level of neutralizing antibody and T cell responses, but a higher IgG2a/IgG1 ratio compared with other vaccines. Boosting with either recombinant subunit, adenovirus vectored or mRNA vaccine after two-doses of inactivated vaccine further improved both neutralizing antibody and Spike-specific Th1-type T cell responses compared to boosting with a third dose of inactivated vaccine. Our results provide new ideas for prophylactic inoculation strategy of SARS-CoV-2 vaccines.

In the context of carbon neutral carbon peak, in order to cope with climate change caused by environmental pollution and energy shortage caused by excessive use of fossil energy, the vigorous development of clean, low-carbon, and efficient renewable energy has become a major strategic direction. The development and utilization of tidal energy in China is still a certain gap with the European powerhouse, the efficiency of tidal energy generation at a low flow rate is low and the scale of development and utilization is small. The feasibility of the proposed strategy is verified by simulation analysis, and the results show that the improved variable step climbing algorithm can quickly track the maximum power point and operate stably at this point.

A reference standard is needed for quality control of protein subunit SARS-CoV-2 vaccines to meet urgent domestic needs. The Chinese National Institutes for Food and Drug Control (NIFDC) launched a project to establish the first reference material for the protein subunit SARS-CoV-2 vaccine to be used for calibration of antigen testing. The potency and stability of the national candidate standard (CS) were determined by collaborative calibration, and accelerated and freeze-thaw degradation studies. Moreover, a suitability study of the CS was performed. Eight laboratories in mainland China were asked to detect antigen content of CS using a common validated enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kit established by NIFDC and in-house kits in the collaborative study. Six laboratories returned valid results, which established that the antigen content of the CS was 876,938 YU/mL, with good agreement across laboratories. In the suitability study, the CS exhibited excellent parallelism and a linear relationship with four samples produced by different expression systems and target proteins. In addition, good stability in the accelerated and freeze-thaw degradation study was observed. In conclusion, the CS was approved by the Biological Product Reference Standards Sub-Committee of the National Drug Reference Standards Committee as the first Chinese national standard for determining antigen content of protein subunit SARS-CoV-2 vaccines, with an assigned antigen content of 877,000 U/mL (Lot. 300050-202101). This standard will contribute to a standardized assessment of protein subunit SARS-CoV-2 vaccine in China and may provide experience for developing reference materials for antigen content detection of SARS-CoV-2 vaccine in other countries.

The construction of metallic nanostructures with strong near-field enhancement is becoming increasingly significant for the practical use of plasmonic devices, such as plasmonic sensors and light-energy conversion systems. Importantly, the near-field enhancement effect depends on the plasmon dephasing time. Here, we propose a method for controlling plasmon dephasing time by utilizing plasmonic coupling for stronger near-field enhancement. Ordered arrays of stacked nanogap gold (Au) structures composed of a metal/insulator/metal nanostructure were fabricated by electron beam lithography and dry etching processes on a niobium-doped titanium dioxide substrate. The dark plasmon mode was excited by the near-field coupling between the upper and lower Au nanostructures separated by an alumina layer with a thickness of 15 nm. A strong near-field enhancement effect was induced by the localization of the electromagnetic field between the upper and lower Au nanostructures and the longer plasmon dephasing time based on the excitation of the dark plasmon mode. It is noteworthy that the dephasing time of the dark plasmon mode measured by time-resolved photoemission electron microscopy was extended 3-fold compared with that of the plasmon mode of the Au nanoblock, which can be controlled by the structural design of the stacked nanogap Au structures.

It has recently been recognized that a subset of asthma patients suffer from glucocorticoid (GC) insensitivity, and glucocorticoid receptor-β (GR-β) is associated with corticosteroid resistance, but the underlying mechanisms remain unknown. Here we demonstrated that Interleukin-17A induced glucocorticoid sensitivity in human bronchial epithelial cells (16HBE) is enhanced, which is depend on E4 promoter-binding protein 4 (E4BP4) mediated GR-β expression. Our data show that the expression of E4BP4 is significantly up-regulated in 16HBE cells, and the depletion of E4BP4 dramatically decreased glucocorticoid sensitivity in IL-17A induced 16HBE cells. Mechanistic studies revealed that E4BP4 plays a crucial role in Interleukin-17A induced glucocorticoid sensitivity in 16HBE cells via down-regulating GR-β, which is probably mediated by PI3K/Akt activation. Collectively, we can draw the conclusion that E4BP4 contribute to enhance the GCs sensitivity, which may offer a new strategy for therapeutic intervention for GC-insensitive asthma.

Near-field spectrum measurement techniques, including near-field scanning optical microscopy, electron energy loss spectroscopy, and multiphoton photoemission electron microscopy, are powerful means to investigate near-field interactions directly on closely spaced metallic nanoparticles or a metallic nanostructure coupled with optical modes, such as whispering gallery mode and waveguide mode, which are called coupled plasmonic systems. In the present study, we have successfully measured the near-field spectra of coupled plasmonic systems using a simple photoelectrochemical measurement based on plasmon-induced water oxidation. Coupling was explored between the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) mode and waveguide mode of periodic gold nanogratings patterned on a thin titanium dioxide waveguide film. Multiple-image encryption techniques not only improve the encryption capacity but also facilitate the transmission and storage of the ciphertext. We present a new method of multiple-image encryption based on compressive holography with enhanced data security using a multiple-beam interferometer. By modifying the Mach–Zehnder interferometer, the interference of multiple object beams and unique reference beam is implemented for encrypting multiple images simultaneously into one hologram. The original images modulated with the random phase masks are put in different positions with different distance away from the CCD camera. Each image plays the role of secret key for other images to realize the mutual encryption. Four-step phase shifting technique is combined with the holographic recording. The holographic recording is treated as a compressive sensing process, thus the decryption process is inverted as a minimization problem and the two-step iterative shrinkage/thresholding algorithm (TwIST) is employed to solve this optimization problem. The simulated results about multiple binary and grayscale images encryption are demonstrated to verify the validity and robustness of our proposed method.

We realized all-optical tunable optical devices based on Fano Resonance in multilayer transition-metal-oxide metamaterials. Combined the plasmonic resonance and slow light effect, an enhanced third-harmonic generation (THG) was realized on strontium titanate composite material.

We present a new method of realizing the spatial-identification image encryption based on digital holography in order to improve the encryption degree and increase encryption freedom. Both the object beam and the reference beam are modulated with random phase respectively. The random phase displayed on the spatial light modulator (SLM) in the reference arm is being refreshed synchronously when the aperture is scanning over the original image. The original image is divided into many subareas by the scanning aperture, and the object beam from each subarea interferes with a reference beam with unique random phase. Therefore, many sub-holograms are captured and each sub-hologram is encrypted with its own sub-key. The spatial position of the aperture becomes additional secret key because it is necessary that each sub-key should match with each encrypted sub-hologram for obtaining a completely decrypted image. This method greatly improves the image encryption degree and guarantees the security of the information. The whole original image is retrieved by superposition of all decrypted subareas. The encryption and decryption are demonstrated by simulations.

We investigated the grating effect in complex gold dolmen structures, in which multiple plasmon modes are present due to plasmon hybridization, experimentally from both the far field and the near field. In particular, the near-field properties were investigated using photoemission electron microscopy, and it was demonstrated that two hybridized plasmon modes on the dolmen structures could be influenced by the grating effect. For comparison, we also investigated the grating effect in arrays of simple nanoblocks and heptamer structures, which were supposed to support a strong bright plasmon mode and a strong dark plasmon mode, respectively, in the near field. We found that the spectral responses of the two hybridized modes on the dolmen structures as the pitch size changed evolved in a manner similar to that of the bright dipole mode on the nanoblocks, whereas the dark mode on the heptamer structures is less sensitive to the pitch size.
