Objective. We aimed to examine the benefits of catheter ablation on left heart structure and function in patients with persistent atrial fibrillation (AF) accompanied by heart failure (HF) with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF), in comparison with the benefits in patients with AF accompanied by HF with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) or patients with no HF. Methods. A total of 399 patients with nonvalvular persistent AF who underwent catheter ablation from 2015 to 2021 were retrospectively included sixty-seven patients with recurrence of AF within 1 year were excluded, as well as 53 patients who failed to be followed up at (12 ± 1) months after the procedure. 3. Uptake of HIV testing and its correlates among sexually experienced college students in Southwestern, China: a Web-Based online cross-sectional study

Abstract Background The prevalence of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is becoming more common among college students in China. However, latest data on the prevalence and correlates of HIV testing among sexually experienced college students is rarely. Methods An online survey was conducted among college students aged 18 years or older using multistage stratified cluster sampling from 16 colleges. Data on socio-demographic, HIV testing, HIV-related awareness, attitudes, sexual education and behaviors were collected. Propensity score matching (PSM) and logistic regression model were used to identify factors associated with HIV testing. Result A total of 108,987 students participated the survey, of which 13,201 sexually experienced college students were included in this study. 1,939 (14.69%) college students with sexual experience reported uptake of HIV testing in the preceding year. The uptake of HIV testing increased for college students with a rising HIV knowledge score and sexual health knowledge. Being awareness of HIV-related knowledge (aOR = 1.15, 95%CI: 1.01–1.30), accepting one-night stands (aOR = 1.16, 95%CI:1.03–1.32), obtaining satisfactory sexual interpretation from parent(s) (aOR = 1.24, 95%CI: 1.07–1.43), ever had unintended pregnancy (aOR = 1.78, 95%CI: 1.32–2.38), ever had received HIV-related preventive service(s) (aOR = 1.37, 95%CI: 1.10–1.70), ever had participated HIV-related preventive services (aOR = 3.76, 95%CI: 2.99–4.75) and ever had anal sex (aOR = 2.66, 95%CI: 2.11–3.34) were positively associated with uptake of HIV testing. However, accepting premarital sex (aOR = 0.76, 95%CI: 0.66–0.88), accepting cohabitation (aOR = 0.75, 95%CI: 0.61–0.92), occasionally discussing sex with parent(s) (aOR = 0.68, 95%CI: 0.50–0.91), and being with moderate satisfaction of school sex courses (aOR = 0.74, 95%CI: 0.58–0.95) were negatively associated with uptake of HIV testing. Conclusion The prevalence of HIV testing was relatively low. Participation in HIV-related services and high-risk sexual behaviors were important enablers for testing. Improving sex education for students, increasing HIV preventive services on campus, and improving family sex education are necessary to increase HIV testing among college sexually experienced students.

4. Clinical Results and Safety of Intracardiac Echocardiography Guidance for Combined Catheter Ablation and Left Atrial Appendage Occlusion

Background: The goal of this study was to compare the procedural safety and long-term outcome associated with a combined catheter ablation and left atrial appendage occlusion (LAAO) procedure utilizing intracardiac echocardiography (ICE) guidance versus transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) guidance. The study focuses on implementing LAmbre and Watchman devices in patients diagnosed with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation (AF). Methods: A total of 363 patients diagnosed with nonvalvular AF and who underwent a combined procedure were prospectively enrolled between November 2017 and May 2022. Following 1:1 propensity score matching, the TEE group (n = 132) and ICE group (n = 132) were systematically compared in terms of the combined procedure, imaging parameters, events related to the procedure, and subsequent outcomes during follow-up, including mortality, stroke, bleeding, device-related thrombus (DRT), and peri-device leaks (PDLs). Results: The ICE group exhibited a significant reduction in total procedural duration (153.71 ± 31.71 vs. 174.74 ± 18.79 min), fluoroscopy radiation dosage (207.24 ± 108.39 vs. 268.61 ± 122.88 mGy), left atrial appendage occlusion procedure time (34.69 ± 10.91 vs. 51.46 ± 15.84 min), and contrast agent exposure (108.71 ± 37.59 vs. 158.41 ± 45.00 mL) compared to the TEE group. Angiography and ICE demonstrated a substantial correlation between the left atrial appendage (LAA) orifice and landing zone/LAA ostium (Pearson’s correlation coefficient r = 0.808 and 0.536/0.697, two-tailed p < 0.001). No occurrences of device-related embolism, thromboembolism, significant bleeding, or unexpected fatalities were observed in either group. Comparable rates of all-cause death (0.76% vs. 0.76%), stroke or transient ischemic attack (2.27% vs. 1.52%), severe bleeding (1.52% vs. 0.76%), PDL (23.81% vs. 24.62%), and DRT (1.52% vs. 1.52%) were noted after an average follow-up of 18.46 ± 7.70 months in both groups, with no discernible differences. Multivariate logistic regression analysis identified a correlation between LAA velocity and the risk of PDL. Conclusions: The effectiveness and safety of ICE-guided combined treatment were demonstrated to be comparable to TEE guidance, accompanied by the additional advantages of decreased procedure time and fluoroscopy radiation exposure. The compound 1,5-pentanediamine (PDA) is prepared by biological methods using biomass as raw material. The salt of 1,5-pentanediamine oxalate (PDA-OXA) was used directly as the monomer for the preparation of a new bio-based nylon 52 material. High-performance polymer materials require initial high-quality monomers, and crystallization is an essential approach to preparing such a monomer. In this work, three crystal forms of PDA-OXA, the anhydrate, dihydrate and trihydrate, were found and the single crystals of two hydrates were obtained. Their crystal structures were determined using single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction. The thermal behaviors were characterized by thermodynamic analysis, and the lattice energy was calculated to further explore the relationship between the thermal stability and crystal structure. Detailed computational calculations, Hirshfeld analyses and lattice energy calculations were performed to quantify both the contribution of intra- and intermolecular interactions to the supramolecular assembly, as well as the influence on the stability of the structure. The structure–property relationship between the PDA-OXA crystal forms was established. Moreover, the phase transformation mechanism between the crystalline forms of PDA-OXA has been established, and the control strategy of specific crystal forms was developed from the water activity–temperature phase diagram and relevant thermodynamic data. Finally, the influence of the polymorphism of the monomer and the polymerization methods on the properties of the polymer was investigated. The nylon 52 product obtained showed good appearance, high hardness and thermal stability, the polymer made using the anhydrate as the monomer has better thermodynamic properties than that prepared from the dihydrate, indicating practical industrial application prospects.

Nylon 514 is one of the new long-chain bio-based nylon materials; its raw material, 1,5-pentanediamine (PDA), is prepared by biological techniques, using biomass as the raw material. The high-performance monomer of nylon 514, 1,5-pentanediamine-tetradecanedioate (PDA-TDA) salt, was obtained through efficient crystallization methods. Here, two crystal forms of PDA-TDA, anhydrous and dihydrate, were identified and studied in this paper. From the characterization data, their crystal structures and thermal behaviors were investigated. Lattice energy was calculated to gain further insight into the relationship between thermal stability and crystal structures. The contribution of hydrogen bonds and other intermolecular interactions to the crystal structure stability have been quantified according to detailed Hirshfeld and IRI analyses. Additionally, the transformation mechanism of the anhydrate and dihydrate was established through a series of well-designed stability experiments, in which the temperature and water activity play a significant role in the structural stability of crystalline forms. Eventually, we obtained nylon 514 products with good thermal stability and low absorption using stable dihydrate powders as monomers. The properties of nylon 514 products prepared by different polymerization methods were also compared.

7. Migrant Population's Experience of Using Essential Medical Services

Background The number of migrant population in China remains high, primarily driven by the developments in industrialisation and urbanisation. The health status and healthcare-seeking experience of this group has become a hot social issue, and promoting their access to equitable essential healthcare services is an important part of China's healthcare system reform. Objective To compare the experience of using essential medical services between migrant and permanent populations in Guangzhou, to provide evidence for improving the level of using essential medical services in migrant population and for promoting the healthcare equity. Methods From September to November 2019, we used a multistage random sampling method to select 1 568 cases (including migrant and permanent residents) treated by six general practitioner teams from six community health centers in Guangzhou. Their demographics and experiences of using essential medical services were collected by a questionnaire survey using a self-developed General Data Questionnaire and the simplified Primary Care Assessment Tool-Adult Edition (PCAT-AE) . We compared the total score of the PCAT-AE and its domains scores between the two groups. We used the generalized linear model to analyze the association between the residency status and the experience of using essential medical services. Results Altogether, 1 568 cases who handed in responsive questionnaires were included for final analysis, among whom 186 (11.86%) were migrant residents. The average total score of the PCAT-AE of all participants, permanent and migrant cases was 3.19 (1.22) , 3.24 (1.23) , and 2.93 (0.75) , respectively. Abstract Radiofrequency catheter ablation (RFCA) is widely used to treat atrial fibrillation (AF), but its effect on left atrial (LA) remodeling in patients with AF is not completely clarified. Few studies have reported the changes in structure and function of the left atrium in patients with different types of AF after RFCA. To analyze the effect of RFCA on the LA structure and function in patients with nonvalvular paroxysmal AF, persistent AF and long-standing persistent AF (LSPAF). RFCA was performed in 180 patients with paroxysmal AF, persistent AF and LSPAF. The changes of LA structure and function in echocardiogram and speckle-tracking echocardiography findings were compared before the procedure, and at 1, 2, 3, 4 weeks, and 2, 3, 6, and 9–12 months after the procedure. There were 60 patients in the paroxysmal AF group, 60 in the persistent AF group and 60 patients in LSPAF group. The pre-procedure LA diameter and volume were smaller in the paroxysmal AF group than persistent AF and LSPAF group. There was no significant change of in the LA structure and function in the paroxysmal AF group within 1 year. In the persistent AF and LSPAF groups, LA structure (anteroposterior diameter, LA volume) significantly decreased, but remained larger than that in paroxysmal AF group. In persistent and LSPAF, function (LA ejection fraction, strain, strain rate) increased significantly within 1 week, then gradually increased. RFCA improved the LA structure and function and resulted in heart reverse remodeling, especially for persistent AF and LSPAF.

Abstract Background Previous cluster-randomized controlled trials evaluating the impact of implementing evidence-based guidelines for nutrition therapy in critical illness do not consistently demonstrate patient benefits. A large-scale, sufficiently powered study is therefore warranted to ascertain the effects of guideline implementation on patient-centered outcomes. Methods We conducted a multicenter, cluster-randomized, parallel-controlled trial in intensive care units (ICUs) across China. We developed an evidence-based feeding guideline. ICUs randomly allocated to the guideline group formed a local "intervention team", which actively implemented the guideline using standardized educational materials, a graphical feeding protocol, and live online education outreach meetings conducted by members of the study management committee. ICUs assigned to the control group remained unaware of the guideline content. All ICUs enrolled patients who were expected to stay in the ICU longer than seven days. The primary outcome was all-cause mortality within 28 days of enrollment. Results Forty-eight ICUs were randomized to the guideline group and 49 to the control group. From March 2018 to July 2019, the guideline ICUs enrolled 1399 patients, and the control ICUs enrolled 1373 patients. Implementation of the guideline resulted in significantly earlier EN initiation (1.20 vs. 1.55 mean days to initiation of EN; difference − 0.40 [95% CI − 0.71 to − 0.09]; P = 0.01) and delayed PN initiation (1.29 vs. 0.80 mean days to start of PN; difference 1.06 [95% CI 0.44 to 1.67]; P = 0.001). There was no significant difference in 28-day mortality (14.2% vs. 15.2%; difference − 1.6% [95% CI − 4.3% to 1.2%]; P = 0.42) between groups. Conclusions In this large-scale, multicenter trial, active implementation of an evidence-based feeding guideline reduced the time to commencement of EN and overall PN use but did not translate to a reduction in mortality from critical illness. Abstract Background The goal of this paper was to assess the quality of primary healthcare services at community health centres (CHCs) from the demand (patient) and supplier (healthcare service institution) angles. Methods This study was conducted at six CHCs in the Greater Bay Area of China. Between August and October 2019, 1,568 patients were recruited (55.8% women and 44.2% men). We evaluated the service quality of CHCs using the National Committee for Quality Assurance Patient-Centred Medical Home (NCQA-PCMH) recognition questionnaire. We assessed patients’ experiences with medical and health services using the Primary Care Assessment Tools (PCAT). Results PCAT total and sub-domains scores were significantly difference at the six CHCs (P 60 years), female, lower education, and employee medical-insured individuals had better patient experiences. Conclusions Our results indicate that CHCs could improve their service quality by improving both institutional health service quality based on NCQA-PCMH assessment and patient experiences based on PCAT scales. These findings can help inform patient-centred primary healthcare policy and management.

12. Comparison of Adverse Events between Isolated Left Atrial Appendage Closure and Combined Catheter Ablation

(1) Background: This study aimed to investigate the effect of an additional catheter ablation (CA) procedure on the risk of post-procedure adverse events during CA combined with left atrial appendage closure (LAAC). (2) Methods: From July 2017 to February 2022, data from 361 patients with atrial fibrillation who underwent LAAC at our center were analyzed retrospectively. The adverse events were compared between CA + LAAC and LAAC-only groups. (3) Results: The incidence of device-related thrombus (DRT) and embolic events was significantly lower in the CA + LAAC group than in the LAAC-only group (p = 0.01 and 0.04, respectively). A logistic regression analysis revealed that the combined procedure served as a protective factor for DRT (OR = 0.09; 95% confidence interval: 0.01–0.89; p = 0.04). Based on a Cox regression analysis, the risk of embolism marginally increased in patients aged ≥65 years (HR = 7.49, 95% CI: 0.85–66.22 p = 0.07), whereas the combined procedure was found to be a protective factor (HR = 0.25, 95% CI: 0.07–0.87 p = 0.03). Further subgroup and interaction analyses revealed similar results. (4) Conclusions: The combined procedure may be associated with a lower rate of post-procedure DRT and embolization without a higher occurrence of other adverse events after LAAC. A risk-score-based prediction model was conducted, showing a good prediction performance.

Background. The combined procedure of left atrial appendage closure (LAAC) and catheter ablation (CA) is a safe and feasible therapy to treat patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). However, the effect of the combined procedure on cardiac function remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the changes in endocrine and mechanical function of the heart following the combined procedure. Methods. This retrospective study included 62 consecutive patients who underwent the combined procedure of AF ablation and WATCHMAN LAAC and 62 sex and age-matched patients who only received AF ablation. During follow-up, patients were examined for brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) levels to represent endocrine cardiac function. Mechanical cardiac function was assessed during echocardiographic examination by means of the LA ejection fraction, LA strain (Ƹ), and LA strain rate (SR). Results. (1) The BNP levels decreased acutely after the procedure, rose at day 3 postoperation, but trended downwards at 3 months postoperation in both groups. No significant difference was observed between the two groups. (2) LA ejection fraction, LA Ƹ, and SR exhibited a continuous upward trend over a 3-month follow-up in both groups. There was no significant difference in LA ejection fractions, SRe (the parameter of LA conduit function), and SRa (the parameter of LA booster pump function) between the two groups. However, the Ƹ and SRs (the parameters of LA reservoir function) improved in patients treated with CA alone. Conclusions. The combined procedure of LAAC and CA significantly improved the endocrine and mechanical function of the heart. Compared to simple CA, based on CA with LAAC intervention, it does not significantly change LA endocrine function but may lead to a decline in the LA reservoir function.

In this paper, we investigate the sparse group feature selection problem, in which covariates posses a grouping structure sparsity at the level of both features and groups simultaneously. We reformulate the feature sparsity constraint as an equivalent weighted l1 -norm constraint in the sparse group optimization problem. To solve the reformulated problem, we first propose a weighted thresholding method based on a dynamic programming algorithm. Then we improve the method to a weighted thresholding homotopy algorithm using homotopy technique. We prove that the algorithm converges to an L-stationary point of the original problem. Computational experiments on synthetic data show that the proposed algorithm is competitive with some state-of-the-art algorithms.

Background: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a single-stranded RNA virus that can weaken the body's cellular and humoral immunity and is a serious disease without specific drug management and vaccine. This study aimed to evaluate the epidemiologic characteristics and transmissibility of HIV.Methods: Data on HIV follow-up were collected in Nanning City, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous, China. An HIV transmission dynamics model was built to simulate the transmission of HIV and estimate its transmissibility by comparing the effective reproduction number (Reff) at different stages: the rapid growth period from January 2001 to March 2005, slow growth period from April 2005 to April 2011, and the plateau from May 2011 to December 2019 of HIV in Nanning City.Results: High-risk areas of HIV prevalence in Nanning City were mainly concentrated in suburbs. Furthermore, high-risk groups were those of older age, with lower income, and lower education levels. The Reff in each stage (rapid growth, slow growth, and plateau) were 2.74, 1.62, and 1.15, respectively, which suggests the transmissibility of HIV in Nanning City has declined and prevention and control measures have achieved significant results.Conclusion: Over the past 20 years, the HIV incidence in Nanning has remained at a relatively high level, but its development trend has been curbed. Transmissibility was reduced from 2.74 to 1.15. Therefore, the prevention and treatment measures in Nanning City have achieved significant improvement.

Background: A single procedure combining left atrial appendage closure (LAAC) plus catheter ablation (CA) has been proven to be safe and feasible for treating atrial fibrillation (AF). However, the influence of treatment modality on left atrial (LA) function is not thoroughly explained.Objective: We aimed to investigate the changes of LA function in persistent AF patients undergoing concomitant LAAC and CA.Methods: The study population comprised 65 patients who underwent combined AF ablation and Watchman LAAC (combined therapy group) in our center, and 65 participants of the AF simple ablation group who were matched based on sex, age, CHA2DS2-VASc score and HAS-BLED score using propensity score matching. During the 1-year follow-up period, two-dimensional echocardiography and speckle tracking echocardiography were performed to assess LA reservoir, conduit, and contractile function.Results: The combined therapy was associated with a significant improvement in the LA reservoir function with increased expansion index and strain indices, including strain and strain rate (SR) during ventricular systole. Conduit function with SR during early ventricular diastole was also improved, as was contractile function with active atrial emptying fraction and SR during atrial systole. Similarly, LA reservoir and contractile function indices all improved continuously during follow-up after catheter ablation alone. At 3 months follow-up LA reservoir and conduit function with strain indices had a tendency to improve only in the simple procedure group. At 1-year follow-up there was no significant difference in either LA volumes or strain indices between the two groups.Conclusion: Both the combined therapy group and the simple ablation group demonstrated significant improvement in LA function. Based upon the fact that LA function was improved in both groups it might be concluded that most of the effects appeared to result from ablation, not LAAC; furthermore the additional LAAC procedure did not affect the improvement of LA function after CA.

19. Influence of urban green open space on residents’ physical activity in China

Abstract Background Urban green open space is a valuable resource for physical activities of urban inhabitants and has the potential to reduce chronic illness and improve health. Research on the relationships between green open space and physical activity is incomplete and limited in China. Thus, the study examines how the urban green open space contributes to physical activity. Methods A questionnaire was designed based on the social ecology theory to investigate the physical activity of 513 residents in urban green open space. We use the time and frequency of residents exercising in urban green space to measure physical activity, and use the factor analysis to synthesize a large number of original factors (i.e., infrastructure, safety, accessibility, landscape quality, and space environment) into relatively few composite indicators. Based on the collected data of the cross-sectional population, the Order Probit regression model was constructed to analyze how urban green open space affects the residents’ physical activity from the perspective of social ecology. Results ① in community factors: accessibility is significantly positive correlation with residents’ physical activity, and there is no significant correlation between safety and physical activity; ②in natural factors: space environment and landscape quality are not significantly correlated with residents’ physical activity; ③ in built environmental factors: infrastructures, the area of green space, the size of open space, and entertainment facilities are significantly correlated to residents’ activity. Basketball courts, volleyball courts, swimming pools, and sports equipment will promote physical activity; ④ apart from the attributes of green open space, other factors are significantly correlated to physical activity in the green open space, e.g. having a companion. Conclusions Urban green open space plays an important role in promoting physical activity especially among the women and the old, and improving the attributes (such as accessibility, infrastructures, the area of green space, the size of open space and entertainment facilities) of the urban green open space and trying to set up group sports proper to play with companion (like “square dancing” and “Tai Chi”) can promote Chinese residents’ physical activity so as to improve public health. The results are significant to facilitate environment health.

Abstract Background Biofilms are cell communities wherein cells are embedded in a self-produced extracellular polymeric substances (EPS). The biofilm of Clostridium acetobutylicum confers the cells superior phenotypes and has been extensively exploited to produce a variety of liquid biofuels and bulk chemicals. However, little has been known about the physiology of C. acetobutylicum in biofilm as well as the composition and biosynthesis of the EPS. Thus, this study is focused on revealing the cell physiology and EPS composition of C. acetobutylicum biofilm. Results Here, we revealed a novel lifestyle of C. acetobutylicum in biofilm: elimination of sporulation and vegetative growth. Extracellular polymeric substances and wire-like structures were also observed in the biofilm. Furthermore, for the first time, the biofilm polysaccharides and proteins were isolated and characterized. The biofilm contained three heteropolysaccharides. The major fraction consisted of predominantly glucose, mannose and aminoglucose. Also, a great variety of proteins including many non-classically secreted proteins moonlighting as adhesins were found considerably present in the biofilm, with GroEL, a S-layer protein and rubrerythrin being the most abundant ones. Conclusions This study evidenced that vegetative C. acetobutylicum cells rather than commonly assumed spore-forming cells were essentially the solvent-forming cells. The abundant non-classically secreted moonlighting proteins might be important for the biofilm formation. This study provides the first physiological and molecular insights into C. acetobutylicum biofilm which should be valuable for understanding and development of the biofilm-based processes.

Abstract Background There is a lack of large-scale epidemiological data on the clinical practice of enteral nutrition (EN) feeding in China. This study aimed to provide such data on Chinese hospitals and to investigate factors associated with EN delivery. Methods This cross-sectional study was launched in 118 intensive care units (ICUs) of 116 mainland hospitals and conducted on April 26, 2017. At 00:00 on April 26, all patients in these ICUs were included. Demographic and clinical variables of patients on April 25 were obtained. The dates of hospitalization, ICU admission and nutrition initiation were reviewed. The outcome status 28 days after the day of investigation was obtained. Results A total of 1953 patients were included for analysis, including 1483 survivors and 312 nonsurvivors. The median study day was day 7 (IQR 2–19 days) after ICU entry. The proportions of subjects starting EN within 24, 48 and 72 h after ICU entry was 24.8% (84/352), 32.7% (150/459) and 40.0% (200/541), respectively. The proportion of subjects receiving > 80% estimated energy target within 24, 48, 72 h and 7 days after ICU entry was 10.5% (37/352), 10.9% (50/459), 11.8% (64/541) and 17.8% (162/910), respectively. Using acute gastrointestinal injury (AGI) 1 as the reference in a Cox model, patients with AGI 2–3 were associated with reduced likelihood of EN initiation (HR 0.46, 95% CI 0.353–0.599; p

25. Dual Routes of Chunking Social Interaction: Insights From Grouping Two Agent Actions in Working Memory.

Humans have evolved the sophisticated ability to extract social relations embedded in interactive entities. One typical demonstration is a social chunking phenomenon wherein the cognitive system chunks individual actions into a unified episode basing on perceived interactive actions. However, the mechanisms underlying social chunking remain to be elucidated. Most studies have adopted static images and manipulated interactions through agents' facingness (face-to-face vs. back-to-back). Connecting agents via directed contingent actions is crucial in forming real-life social interaction. Hence, we employed dynamic actions as stimuli, separated physical- and communicative-contingency interactive actions, and predicted that domain-general physical regularities and domain-specific social relationships are crucial in social interactions, respectively. We tested this prediction by using an involuntary chunking effect in working memory, wherein two individual actions are involuntarily chunked when containing task-irrelevant interactive information. We found that involuntary chunking occurred for both types of upright interactive actions (Experiments 1, 3, 5, and 6). Inverting actions erased the chunking of communicative-but not physical-contingency actions (Experiments 2, 4, and 5). The facingness of dyads did not participate in chunking physical-contingency actions but was a prerequisite for chunking communicative-contingency actions (Experiments 3 and 6). These results reveal the dual routes of chunking interactive actions. Moreover, they suggest that the chunking mechanisms of dynamic social interaction are distinct fromthose of static images, highlighting the importance of using dynamic stimuli to explore the mechanisms of social interaction in emerging people-watching interdisciplinarity. Working memory (WM) has been a major focus of cognitive science and neuroscience for the past 50 years. While most WM research has centered on the mechanisms of objects, there has been a lack of investigation into the cognitive and neural mechanisms of events, which are the building blocks of our experience. Employing confirmatory factor analysis and resting-state and task fMRI, our study demonstrated for the first time that events have an independent storage space within WM, known as the event cache, with distinct neural correlates compared to object storage in WM. The cerebellar network was found to be the most essential network for event cache, with the left cerebellum Crus I being particularly involved in encoding and maintaining events. Our findings shed critical light on the neuropsychological mechanism of WM by revealing event cache as an independent sub-component of WM and encourage the reconsideration of theoretical models for WM.

Working memory (WM) has a limited capacity; however, this limitation can be mitigated by selecting individual items from the set currently held in WM for prioritization. The selection mechanism underlying this prioritization ability is referred to as the focus of attention (FOA) in WM. Although impressive progress has been achieved in recent years, a fundamental question remains unclear: Do perception and WM share one FOA? In the current study, we investigated the hypothesis that only a perceptual task tapping object-based attention can divert the FOA in WM. We adopted a retro-cue WM paradigm and inserted a perceptual task after the offset of the cue. Critically, we manipulated the type of attention (object-based attention in Experiments 1-3, feature-based attention in Experiment 4, and spatial attention in Experiment 5) consumed by the perceptual task. We found that participants were able to prioritize a retro-cued representation in WM, and the retro-cue benefit on memory accuracy was intact regardless of the perceptual task. Critically, the retro-cue benefit on the response time of WM task was significantly reduced only after an object-based attention perceptual task (Experiments 1, 2, 3a, and 3b), while remaining constant after a feature-based attention (Experiment 4) or spatial attention (Experiment 5) perceptual task. These results suggest that WM and perception share an object-based FOA, and an object-based attention perceptual task can divert the FOA in WM. 34. Spontaneous Pancreatic Hemorrhage: Successful Conservative Management in Two Cases.

Objective: Rare disease Background: Spontaneous pancreatic and peripancreatic hemorrhage (SPH) is a rare subtype of spontaneous retroperitoneal hemorrhage. With diverse clinical manifestations and no specific presentations, early diagnosis of SPH becomes challenging. Patient-specific underlying causes and vital signs guide the SPH treatment approach. Case Reports: Case 1: A 39-year-old man reported unexplained hypogastralgia at the emergency department (ED). An abdominal MRI revealed a mixed hematoma and cystic lesions between the pancreatic head and descending duodenum, attributed to ruptured mucinous cystic neoplasms. Extensive hematoceles were identified around the liver and abdominal pelvis on an enhanced CT scan. After undergoing fasting, rehydration, proton pump inhibitor and somatostatin intravenous injections, and peritoneal puncture, his condition improved. He was discharged nine days post-admission. Case 2: A 44-year-old man arrived at the ED with back pain and right upper quadrant pain. Enhanced CT indicated peritoneal fluid and a hematoma between the pancreatic head and descending duodenum. He initially received conservative treatment. However, on the eighth day, he reported recurrent abdominal pain. Follow-up CT showed an enlarged hematoma and gastric content accumulation. The patient was fasted and put on parenteral nutrition, and by the 37th day of hospitalization, he had fully recovered and was discharged. Both patients, having stable hemodynamics, fully recovered following conservative management, with no surgical intervention required. Conclusions: Given its varied clinical presentations, SPH can easily be misdiagnosed. However, successful conservative management can lead to full recovery, as demonstrated in these case reports. To effectively immobilize an enzyme while maintaining its high activity and stability, the design of supports with controlled geometric structures and heterogeneous surface properties is desirable. Towards this goal, heterogeneous titanium dioxide (TiO2) surfaces with controlled pore sizes were synthesized in this study and used to efficiently immobilize lipase. The immobilized lipase activity increased by a factor of 1.31 with an increase in the TiO2 pore size from 11.46 to 21.14 nm. The highest protein loading of 15.52 mg/g was achieved in ethenyl triethoxy silane (ETS)-modified TiO2 (E-P25) after immobilizing the enzymes at 30 ℃, pH 7.33 for 3 h and using a protein concentration in solution of 0.176 mg/mL. Among the different surface functionalities, the highest activity yield of 428.04 % was accomplished by using TiO2 calcinated at 650 ℃ and modified by ETS as immobilization support. The immobilized enzymes showed excellent storage stability and retained almost 95 % of their activity after being stored at 4 ℃ for 8 weeks. This research provides experimental evidence that highlights the importance of studying of enzyme immobilization on the supports with synergistically designed geometric structures and surface chemical properties.

Industrially, lignin in pulp liquor not only obstructed the realization of value-added products, but also threatened the aquatic ecosystem. A magnetic composite Ca(OH)2/Fe3O4, combining the eco-friendliness of Ca-based flocculants with the convenience of magnetic flocculation, was simply compounded to efficiently flocculate lignin from papermaking black liquor. Morphologic and structural features of the flocculant before and after flocculation were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The flocculant Ca(OH)2/Fe3O4 presented mesoporous and core-shell structure, which acted directly in the sodium lignin aqueous solution without pH neutralization, maintaining high lignin removal between 91% and 95%. Ca(OH)2/Fe3O4 showed a wider salts (0–1 mol/L NaCl) and pH (9–12.5) tolerance. In actual pulp black liquor, Ca(OH)2/Fe3O4 exhibited high removal of 90.16% and 85.93% for lignin and chemical oxygen demand (COD), respectively. The flocculation performance of Ca(OH)2/Fe3O4 outdistanced that of the traditional flocculant polyacrylamide (PAM). It displayed magnetically separable with a good reusability. The removal of lignin could attain 90.54% even after 6 cycles. Charge neutralization, micro-bridging, destabilization and sedimentation were involved in the process of lignin flocculation. Consequently, Ca(OH)2/Fe3O4 presented huge potential in papermaking black liquor treatment.

There is a dearth of tuberculosis (TB) drug development activity as current therapeutic treatments are inadequate due to the appearance of drug-resistant TB. The enzyme UDP-galactopyranose mutase (UGM) is involved in the biosynthesis of galactan which is essential for cell wall integrity and bacterial viability. Its inhibition has thus been featured as profitable strategy for anti-TB drug discovery. In this study, we report on the synthesis of amides derived from rosmarinic acid, their inhibitory effect towards purified UGM using three distinct biochemical assays: FP, HPLC and SPR. The rosmarinic amides generally showed a significantly higher affinity for UGM than the corresponding rosmarinic ester. In particular, compound 5h displayed interesting binding affinity values (Kd = 58 ± 7, 63 ± 9 µM towards KpUGM and MtUGM respectively). Furthermore, a new UGM SPR assay was established and confirmed that 5h binds to UGM with a dissociation constant of 104.8 ± 6.5 μM. Collectively, this study validates the amide bioisosteric strategy which has been successfully implemented to develop UGM inhibitors from rosmarinic acid, providing a substantial basis for further design of novel UGM inhibitors and anti-mycobacterial agents.

Almost all salt forms of nucleotides exist as crystalline hydrates. In this study, the hydrates of adenosine-3′,5′-cyclic phosphate sodium (cAMPNa·nH2O, n = 2, 4, 5, including its methanol solvate of n = 3) were systematically investigated for the crystal structures, their humidity sensibility, the transformation behaviors mediated by humidity, and the relationship between crystal water behaviors and specific structures. It was found that there are some major differences in crystal morphologies, molecular conformation, bonding profiles, and crystal water distribution in the lattices of different hydrates. The difference in the desorption dynamics of crystal water for the different hydrates was mainly attributed to their steric effects in the crystal lattice despite the relation to the interaction of water molecules with sodium ions and cAMP anions. The reversible conversions between the hydrates and their corresponding low hydrates or even anhydrates occur along with desorption/uptake of crystal water mediated by humidity, yet the reversible transformation capability would be disabled once the host structures were destroyed due to excessive loss of crystal water.

Working memory (WM) is essential for cognition, but the underlying neural mechanisms remain elusive. From a hierarchical processing perspective, this paper proposed and tested a hypothesis that a domain-general network at the top of the WM hierarchy can interact with distinct domain-preferential intermediate circuits to support WM. Employing a novel N-back task, we first identified the posterior superior temporal gyrus (pSTG), middle temporal area (MT), and postcentral gyrus (PoCG) as intermediate regions for biological motion and shape motion processing, respectively. Using further psychophysiological interaction analyses, we delineated a frontal–parietal network (FPN) as the domain-general network. These results were further verified and extended by a delayed match to sample (DMS) task. Although the WM load-dependent and stimulus-free activations during the DMS delay phase confirm the role of FPN as a domain-general network to maintain information, the stimulus-dependent activations within this network during the DMS encoding phase suggest its involvement in the final stage of the hierarchical processing chains. In contrast, the load-dependent activations of intermediate regions in the N-back task highlight their further roles beyond perception in WM tasks. These results provide empirical evidence for a hierarchical processing model of WM and may have significant implications for WM training.

Nylon 5T is one of the bio-based nylons, its raw material 1,5-pentanediamine is derived from biomass resources and produced by biological methods. 1,5-pentanediamine-terephthalate (PDA-TPA) is the monomeric salt for nylon 5T polymerization, and its own product quality has a significant impact on the performance of nylon 5T. PDA-TPA was prepared by anti-solvent crystallization in this study. It exists in two solid forms, a monohydrate [form (I)] and an anhydrous phase [form (II)]. The transition temperature of the two phases was around 65°C in the given ethanol–water binary (7:1) mixture. The characterization of monohydrate and anhydrate phases regarding structures and stabilities was carefully carried out using powder X-ray diffraction, single crystal X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, hot-stage microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The relationship between the molecular interactions of monohydrate and anhydrate phases under different packing architectures and their thermal behaviours was analysed and established. In addition, the relationships between the structures and thermal behaviours for the two solid forms were analysed and established. In addition, the effect of solvent on phase conversion, the relationships between the temperature and water activity, as well as the relative stability of monohydrate and anhydrate phases under different thermodynamic conditions, were investigated by solid–solid transformation and solvent-mediated transformation experiments. It was obvious that the transition temperature of monohydrate and anhydrate phases of PDA-TPA was significantly influenced by water activity, and the larger the value of water activity is, the higher is the transition temperature. These studies give insight into the transformation of nylon 5T monomer salt and contribute to the control of target crystal preparation.

Nylon 5I is one of the new bio-based nylon materials. Its raw material 1,5-pentanediamine (PDA) is prepared by biological methods using biomass as the raw material. The high-performance polymer materials require the original high-quality monomers. 1,5-Pentanediamine-isophthalate (PDA-IPA) was taken as the direct monomer for the preparation of nylon 5I, and the crystallization was a valuable and essential approach to preparing the good-performance monomer salt. In this report, we found and obtained two crystal forms of PDA-IPA, monohydrate and an anhydrous form. Their crystal structures were determined and analyzed by single crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD), powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Hirshfeld surface maps were employed to capture the differences in the interactions present in the two forms. The thermal behaviors were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Moreover, the monohydrate and anhydrous phase can transform to each other through solid-solid transformation or solution-mediated phase transformation, and the critical values of the phase transformation were determined. Finally, the relative stability of the two forms under different thermodynamic conditions was discussed, especially the influence of temperature and water activity on the stability.

Bio-based polyamide 56 is a new type of bio-based polyamide that is regarded as a most promising material for the textile industry. High-quality polymer materials require first high-quality monomers. In this report, we investigated the solid–liquid equilibrium of polyamide 56 salt (an ionic solid compound used to prepare polyamide 56), thermodynamic parameters of the dissolution process, and the crystallization process, and screened out a favorable crystallization system to obtain a high-quality product. The dissolution was shown to be endothermic and not a spontaneous process; entropy was the overall driving force for the dissolution. The crystallization process and the effect of impurities were investigated. Cooling crystallization in pure water was beneficial to the nucleation and crystal growth of polyamide 56 salt, and is a good choice from the perspective of economy and the stability of the product. Additionally, the crystal structural characteristics and thermal behavior were systematically characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction (SSRD), powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). It was found that there were two crystal forms of polyamide 56 salt, dihydrate and anhydrate. The dihydrate was a stable crystal form, and the anhydrous form could be converted into the dihydrate by absorbing moisture. The temperature 183.7 °C was the onset of 1,5-pentanediamine cation deprotonation and adipic acid anion protonation rather than their degradation. These contributions provide a potential industrial preparation strategy for high-quality polyamide 56 salt, as well as laying a foundation for its polymerization.

BACKGROUND: 5‐aminovalerate (5‐AVA) is the precursor of valerolactam, a potential building block for producing nylon 5, and also regarded as a potential C5 chemical platform. Although 5‐AVA bioproduction has been developed, few studies have emphasized the separation of 5‐AVA from the bioconversion liquid. RESULTS: An effective and benign method for separation of 5‐AVA from its bioconversion liquid was proposed based on chromatography technology using macroporous adsorption resin AK‐1. This work focuses on explosion of the adsorption mechanism and optimization of the operating conditions. Freundlich model and thermodynamics results showed that the adsorption affinity of 5‐AVA to the AK‐1 resin was weaker than that of l‐lysine. Combination of the characterization results of AK‐1 resin with the physicochemical properties of 5‐AVA and l‐lysine, the adsorption mechanism was proposed as meso‐micropore diffusion, and hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic effects. In dynamic studies, a 5‐AVA purity of 99.3% and yield of 92% was obtained at an operating temperature of 353.15 K on a 40:1 chromatographic column eluted by deionized water. The residual 5‐AVA and l‐lysine were recovered by 1 mol L–¹ HCl, which can be used as a feed material in the 5‐AVA conversion process repeatedly. CONCLUSION: An innovative benign efficient environmentally process for recovery of 5‐AVA from the bioconversion liquid was developed based on a macroporous resin AK‐1. Compared with ion exchange resins, macroporous resins can efficiently adsorb 5‐AVA, whereas salt ions cannot be retained. This clean and efficient method provides a promising strategy for separating similar biochemical products. © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry

In order to solve the toxic and hazardous issues of the agents in the chemical reduction process of graphene oxide (GO), disodium guanosine 5′-monophosphate (GMP-2Na) was used as an ideal reducing agent for the synthesis of functionalized GO (FGO) for lipase immobilization. At the condition of low amount adsorption of GMP-2Na indicated by the N1s spectra of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), the C/O atomic ratio of the FGO increased from 2.09 to 3.12, indicating the reduction of GO. As the amount of GMP-2Na increased, the intensity of the characteristic peak of GO in the XRD pattern decreased, and the I D /I G peak intensity of Raman spectra increased during the functionalization process. It was found that when the concentration of GMP-2Na is 0.20 mg/mL, the degree of hydrophobicity of FGO is conducive to the formation of optimal conformation of lipase. After immobilization, the activity of the immobilized enzyme reaches twice the value of free enzyme. At the same time, the protein loading reaches to 600 mg/g. The immobilized enzyme showed enhanced durability since no obvious decrease was observed after incubation for 8 h at pH 6.0 and pH 7.0. After storage for 35 days, the activity of GO-G@ enzyme was 54.47% higher than that of free enzyme. GO reduced by GMP-2Na provides a possibility to obtain a highly efficient lipase immobilization carrier.
