Abstract This study constructed a comprehensive analysis of cell death modules in eliminating aberrant cells and remodeling tumor microenvironment (TME). Consensus analysis was performed in 490 lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) patients based on 4 types of cell death prognostic genes. Intersection method divided these LUAD samples into 5 cell death risk (CDR) clusters, and COX regression analysis were used to construct the CDR signature (CDRSig) with risk scores. Significant differences of TME phenotypes, clinical factors, genome variations, radiosensitivity and immunotherapy sensitivity were observed in different CDR clusters. Patients with higher risk scores in the CDRSig tended to be immune-excluded or immune-desert, and those with lower risk scores were more sensitive to radiotherapy and immunotherapy. The results from mouse model showed that intense expression of the high-risk gene PFKP was associated with low CD8+ T cell infiltration upon radiotherapy and anti-PD-L1 treatment. Deficient assays in vitro confirmed that PFKP downregulation enhanced cGAS/STING pathway activation and radiosensitivity in LUAD cells. In conclusion, our studies originally performed a comprehensive cell death analysis, suggesting the importance of CDR patterns in reprogramming TME and providing novel clues for LUAD personalized therapies.

The integration of AI-based chatbots in language education has garnered significant attention, yet the interplay between chatbots and positive psychology remains underexplored. Filling this gap through a critical analysis of existing theories, measurement scales, and empirical evidence, this paper evaluates the potential benefits and drawbacks of incorporating AI chatbots in language learning environments and how AI chatbots may positively or negatively impact emotional dimensions of language acquisition. The findings unravel that the primary advantages of the AI chatbots are personalized instruction with rapid feedback, a decrease in anxiety levels and a surge in motivation, greater learner independence and self-directed learning, and the fostering of metacognitive abilities. Conversely, the identified obstacles encompass restricted emotional awareness, a deficiency in genuine human interaction, ethical dilemmas and privacy issues, as well as the potential reinforcement of biases and stereotypes. By highlighting the importance of learner emotions in the language learning process, this conceptual analysis review underscores the need for a nuanced understanding of how AI chatbots can support or hinder emotional engagement and motivation. The paper discusses the impacting factors of AI-based chatbots in language education, and strategies for addressing challenges and optimizing chatbot-learner interactions, such as incorporating affective computing techniques and designing culturally-sensitive chatbots. Finally, the article outlines future research directions, emphasizing the need for validated emotion scales in chatbot assisted language learning contexts, longitudinal studies, mixed-methods research, comparative analyses, and investigations into the role of chatbots in fostering emotional intelligence and intercultural competence.

Background: Atherosclerotic renal artery stenosis (ARAS) is commonly associated with cardiovascular diseases(CVD). Patients with ARAS typically present with cardiac structural and functional abnormalities, and the differences in cardiac structure and function compared to hypertensive patients without ARAS remain to be explored. Methods: A total of 499 hypertensive patients were included, of whom 134 had ARAS and 365 had no renal artery stenosis (RAS). Parameters about cardiac function and structure detected by echocardiography and other clinical data are collected. Univariate and multivariate binary logistic regression and mediation analysis were performed on the collected data. Results: Compared to hypertensive patients without ARAS, those with ARAS had significantly increased left ventricular (LV) internal diameter (LVIDd), posterior wall thickness (PWTd), LV geometric abnormalities, diastolic dysfunction, and a higher prevalence of LV hypertrophy (LVH). After adjustment, ARAS was significantly associated with LV diastolic dysfunction (LVDF) (OR = 1.12, 95 %CI = 1.03–1.3), LVIDd (OR = 1.07, 95 %CI = 1.02–1.13), LV geometry (OR = 1.24, 95 %CI = 1.12–1.36), PWTd (OR = 1.2, 95 %CI = 1.09–1.31), and LV mass index (OR = 1.31, 95 %CI = 1.18–1.47). Mediation analysis identified hypersensitive C-reactive protein (Hs-CRP) and serum creatinine (Scr) as significant mediators, accounting for 10.80 % to 59.54 % of the ARAS impact on LV abnormalities. Conclusion: ARAS appears to be an independent risk factor for abnormalities in cardiac function and structure, potentially mediated by Hs-CRP and Scr. Hypertensive patients with ARAS demonstrate a higher prevalence of left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) and diastolic dysfunction, underscoring the importance of vigilant monitoring in this population.

Abstract The clinical appearances of Pyogenic granuloma (PG) in children are not as typical as in adults. Meanwhile, skin biopsy is hard to accept for parents in most of time. Therefore, data of PG in children has been deprived. To analyze the dermoscopic features of PG in children in order to improve the efficiency of diagnosis and treatment and to reduce the probability of invasive examination. A single‐center retrospective study conducted from 1 January 2022 to 30 August 2022 summarized and analyzed the clinical data and dermoscopic features of patients clinically diagnosed with PG. A total of 36 patients were involved, 61.11% were males, 72.22% occurred in the face. Over 50% patients had the following dermoscopic patterns: reddish homogeneous area (100%), white collarette (91.7%), yellow‐white scales (69.4%), vascular structures (52.8%), and white rail lines (55.6%). Regression analysis found that gender and courses of disease had a statistically significant impact on part of the dermoscopic patterns. The proportions of dermoscopic features with yellow‐white scales (69.4%), dark red scabs (27.8%), and bleeding (27.8%) in this study were higher than in previous studies (26.7%, 10%, and 10%, respectively). Dermoscope is a practical diagnostic tool for PG in children. It is necessary to consider gender, disease course and lesion locations when PG is diagnosed using dermoscope. The characteristics of yellow‐white scales, dark red scabs, and bleeding are the microscopic features that distinguish pediatric patients with PG from adult patients, which should be given special attention to in pediatric patients.

The forest experience is good for people’s physical and mental health. However, few studies on the effects of pure forest based on the duration and way of experience on people’s physical and mental recovery. In this study, we took 180 first-year college students as research objects and conducted experiments in Pinus sylvestris and Betula platyphylla and the control group of grass plot. The changes of physiological and psychological indexes of the subjects were compared by two perception methods (onsite perception, video perception) and three perception duration (10 min, 20 min, 30 min). The results indicated that: (1) Differences between the two pure forests were mainly reflected in short-term recovery of diastolic blood pressure (DBP) and long-term recovery of total mood disorder (TMD). (2) Video perception was more conducive to short-term recovery of systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP). (3) Viewing the Pinus sylvestris for 20 min in different ways was the best way to relieve stress. It is suggested that, Pinus sylvestris can be used as the rehabilitation perception material, and reasonable path length or perception time can be selected for landscape construction in future. These results can provide scientific reference for landscape design based on forest health and environmental perception.

Abstract Background Duodenal papilla carcinoma (DPC) is prone to relapse even after radical pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD) (including robotic, laparoscopic and open approach). This study aimed to develop web calculators to predict early recurrence (ER) (within two years after surgery) and long-term survival in patients with DPC after PD. Methods Patients with DPC after radical PD were included. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to identify independent risk factors. Two web calculators were developed based on independent risk factors in the training cohort and then tested in the validation cohort. Results Of the 251 patients who met the inclusion criteria, 180 and 71 patients were enrolled in the training and validation cohorts, respectively. Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that tumor size [Odds Ratio (OR) 1.386; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1070–1.797; P = 0.014]; number of lymph node metastasis (OR 2.535; 95% CI 1.114–5.769; P = 0.027), perineural invasion (OR 3.078; 95% CI 1.147–8.257; P = 0.026), and tumor differentiation (OR 3.552; 95% CI 1.132–11.152; P = 0.030) were independent risk factors for ER. Nomogram based on the above four factors achieved good C-statistics of 0.759 and 0.729 in predicting ER in the training and the validation cohorts, respectively. Time-dependent ROC analysis (timeROC) and decision curve analysis (DCA) revealed that the nomogram provided superior diagnostic capacity and net benefit compared with single variable. Conclusions This study developed and validated two web calculators that can predict ER and long-term survival in patients with DPC with high degree of stability and accuracy.

BackgroundPerfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) exposure may affect male reproductive health. There are regional differences in PFASs exposure levels among men of childbearing age in China, and current research results on associated influencing factors are inconsistent. ObjectiveTo investigate the levels of PFASs in serum and their determinants among men of childbearing age. MethodsThe participants (n=113, 22-45 years old) were from a cross-sectional study of exposure to environmental pollutants and male reproductive health damage in Hubei Province conducted from April to June 2013 at the Reproductive Medicine Center of Tongji Hospital, Wuhan, Hubei Province. Eleven kinds of PFASs were measured in serum by isotopic dilution-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. The included PFASs were prefluorohexanoic acid (PFHxA), perfluoroheptanoic acid (PFHpA), perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA), perfluorodecanoic acid (PFDA), perfluoroundecanoic acid (PFUdA), perfluorododecanoic acid (PFDoA), perfluorotridecanoic acid (PFTrDA), perfluorotetradecanoic acid (PFTeDA), perfluorohexane sulfonate (PFHxS), and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS). Information about participants' demographic characteristics, lifestyle, and habits was collected by a set of self-designed questionnaires. The associations of demographic characteristics, lifestyle, and habits with exposure to PFASs were analyzed by linear regression. ResultsThe major components of PFASs were PFOS and PFOA, and the concentrations expressed as M (P25, P75) were 8.31 (4.90, 17.79) ng·mL−1 and 2.77 (2.18, 3.46) ng·mL−1, respectively. The positive rates of six PFASs (PFOA, PFNA, PFDA, PFUdA, PFHxS, and PFOS) were 100%, followed by PFDoA and PFTrDA (87.61% and 88.59%, respectively). The linear regression results showed that age was positively associated with the levels of Σ8PFASs (sum of the concentrations of the eight PFASs with a positive rate greater than 80%) (P < 0.05). In the context of global warming, the frequency of severe weather occurrences, such as unexpected cold spells and heat waves, will grow, as well as the intensity of these natural disasters. Lizards, as a large group of reptiles, are ectothermic. Their body temperatures are predominantly regulated by their environment and temperature variations directly impact their behavior and physiological activities. Frequent cold periods and heat waves can affect their biochemistry and physiology, and often their ability to maintain their body temperature. Mitochondria, as the center of energy metabolism, are crucial for maintaining body temperature, regulating metabolic rate, and preventing cellular oxidative damage. Here, we used RT-qPCR technology to investigate the expression patterns and their differences for the 13 mitochondrial PCGs in Sphenomorphus incognitus (Squamata:Scincidae), also known as the brown forest skink, under extreme temperature stress at 4 °C, 8 °C, 34 °C, and 38 °C for 24 h, compared to the control group at 25 °C. In southern China, for lizards, 4 °C is close to lethal, and 8 °C induces hibernation, while 34/38 °C is considered hot and environmentally realistic. Results showed that at a low temperature of 4 °C for 24 h, transcript levels of ATP8, ND1, ND4, COI, and ND4L significantly decreased, to values of 0.52 ± 0.08, 0.65 ± 0.04, 0.68 ± 0.10, 0.28 ± 0.02, and 0.35 ± 0.02, respectively, compared with controls. By contrast, transcript levels of COIII exhibited a significant increase, with a mean value of 1.86 ± 0.21. However, exposure to 8 °C for 24 h did not lead to an increase in transcript levels. Indeed, transcript levels of ATP6, ATP8, ND1, ND3, and ND4 were significantly downregulated, to 0.48 ± 0.11, 0.68 ± 0.07, 0.41 ± 0.08, 0.54 ± 0.10, and 0.52 ± 0.07, respectively, as compared with controls. Exposure to a hot environment of 34 °C for 24 h led to an increase in transcript levels of COI, COII, COIII, ND3, ND5, CYTB, and ATP6, with values that were 3.3 ± 0.24, 2.0 ± 0.2, 2.70 ± 1.06, 1.57 ± 0,08, 1.47 ± 0.13, 1.39 ± 0.56, and 1.86 ± 0.12, respectively, over controls. By contrast, ND4L exhibited a significant decrease (to 0.31 ± 0.01) compared with controls. When exposed to 38 °C, the transcript levels of the 13 PCGs significantly increased, ranging from a 2.04 ± 0.23 increase in ND1 to a 6.30 ± 0.96 rise in ND6. Under two different levels of cold and heat stress, the expression patterns of mitochondrial genes in S. incognitus vary, possibly associated with different strategies employed by this species in response to low and high temperatures, allowing for rapid compensatory adjustments in mitochondrial electron transport chain proteins in response to temperature changes. Furthermore, this underscores once again the significant role of mitochondrial function in determining thermal plasticity in reptiles.

Abstract Ethyl carbamate (EC) is a kind of genotoxic and carcinogenic substance and potentially harmful to human health. In this study, simple and effective removal of EC from liquor samples by using the magnetic mesoporous adsorbent (Fe3O4@COFs) was investigated. Gas chromatography and triple quadrupole tandem mass spectrometry (GC‐MS/MS) was used to monitor the whole of adsorption process. The results showed that the adsorbent has high efficiency and fast adsorption capacity. Under the optimized adsorption parameters, pseudo‐first‐order and pseudo‐second‐order kinetic models were employed to reveal the underlying sorption mechanism. Results indicated that the adsorption of EC on Fe3O4@COFs is more consistent with the pseudo‐second‐order model. Furthermore, an effective method for the adsorption and detection of EC was successfully developed, which exhibited good linearity with R2 ranging from 0.9954 to 0.9998, satisfactory recoveries in the range of 86.9%–116.2%, and the relative standard deviations (RSD) was lower than 5.8%. Fe3O4@COFs showed good stability and excellent performance in removing EC from liquor samples. It is expected that the proposed magnetic COFs hold great promise for liquor sample pretreatment and be extended for application in other fields.

Tunneling nanotubes (TNTs) are actin-rich intercellular conduits that mediate distant cell-to-cell communication and enable the transfer of various cargos, including proteins, organelles, and virions. They play vital roles in both physiological and pathological processes. In this review, we focus on TNTs in different types of viruses, including retroviruses such as HIV, HTLV, influenza A, herpesvirus, paramyxovirus, alphavirus and SARS-CoV-2. We summarize the viral proteins responsible for inducing TNT formation and explore how these virus-induced TNTs facilitate intercellular communication, thereby promoting viral spread. Furthermore, we highlight other virus infections that can induce TNT-like structures, facilitating the dissemination of viruses. Moreover, TNTs promote intercellular spread of certain viruses even in the presence of neutralizing antibodies and antiviral drugs, posing significant challenges in combating viral infections. Understanding the mechanisms underlying viral spread via TNTs provides valuable insights into potential drug targets and contributes to the development of effective therapies for viral infections.

In the context of globalization, the demand for English academic writing instruction at the higher education level is experiencing exponential growth. Consequently, it is crucial to conduct research that transcends national, cultural, and disciplinary boundaries in order to address this pressing need. However, there is a scarcity of research examining the intricate and diverse nature of English academic writing instruction across a wide array of national, cultural, and disciplinary contexts, highlighting an area that calls for further investigation. In response to this gap, Anne Golden, Lars Anders Kulbrandstad, and Lawrence Jun Zhang have collaborated as editors on a comprehensive volume titled “Crossing Borders, Writing Texts, Being Evaluated: Cultural and Disciplinary Norms in Academic Writing.” This collection aims to inform educators and researchers about the challenges encountered in multilingual contexts of academic writing and propose empirically substantiated solutions and coping strategies. This article provides a summary of each chapter of the volume, highlights notable features, and offers constructive criticism by identifying areas for improvement. Overall, the authors’ adeptness in unraveling the complexity and diversity of English academic writing instruction permeates the entire book. Their utilization of empirical studies, insightful findings, practical recommendations, and consideration of diverse contexts all enable their contributions to the field of English academic writing instruction. Consequently, this book serves as an indispensable resource for researchers, educators, and graduate students who seek guidance in navigating the intricacies of teaching and learning academic writing in multilingual contexts.

Ecological factors related to climate extremes have a significant influence on the adaptability of organisms, especially for ectotherms such as reptiles that are sensitive to temperature change. Climate extremes can seriously affect the survival and internal physiology of lizards, sometimes even resulting in the loss of local populations or even complete extinction. Indeed, studies have shown that the expression levels of the nuclear genes and mitochondrial genomes of reptiles change under low-temperature stress. At present, the temperature adaptability of reptiles has rarely been studied at the mitochondrial genome level. In the present study, the mitochondrial genomes of three species of lizards, Calotes versicolor, Ateuchosaurus chinensis, and Hemidactylus bowringii, which live in regions of sympatry, were sequenced. We used RT-qPCR to explore the level of mitochondrial gene expression under low-temperature stress, as compared to a control temperature. Among the 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), the steady-state transcript levels of ND4L, ND1, ATP6, and COII were reduced to levels of 0.61 ± 0.06, 0.50 ± 0.08, 0.44 ± 0.16, and 0.41 ± 0.09 in C. versicolor, respectively, compared with controls. The transcript levels of the ND3 and ND6 genes fell to levels of just 0.72 ± 0.05 and 0.67 ± 0.05 in H. bowringii, compared with controls. However, the transcript levels of ND3, ND5, ND6, ATP6, ATP8, Cytb, and COIII genes increased to 1.97 ± 0.15, 2.94 ± 0.43, 1.66 ± 0.07, 1.59 ± 0.17, 1.46 ± 0.04, 1.70 ± 0.16, and 1.83 ± 0.07 in A. chinensis. Therefore, the differences in mitochondrial gene expression may be internally related to the adaptative strategy of the three species under low-temperature stress, indicating that low-temperature environments have a greater impact on A. chinensis, with a small distribution area. In extreme environments, the regulatory trend of mitochondrial gene expression in reptiles is associated with their ability to adapt to extreme climates, which means differential mitochondrial genome expression can be used to explore the response of different lizards in the same region to low temperatures. Our experiment aims to provide one new research method to evaluate the potential extinction of reptile species in warm winter climates.

In this paper, a new class of Cucker-Smale systems with distributed delays are developed from the measurement perspective. By combining dissipative differential inequalities with a continuity argument, some new sufficient criteria for the flocking dynamics of the proposed model with general communication rate, especially the non-normalized rate, are established. In order to achieve the prescribed pattern motion, the driving force term is incorporated into the delayed collective system. Lastly, some examples and simulations are provided to illustrate the validity of the theoretical results.

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of mitochondrial pyruvate carrier (MPC) blockade on the sensitivity of detection and radiotherapy of prostate cancer (PCa). Methods: We investigated glycolysis reprogramming and MPC changes in patients with PCa by using metabolic profiling, RNA-Seq, and tissue microarrays. Transient blockade of pyruvate influx into mitochondria was observed in cellular studies to detect its different effects on prostate carcinoma cells and benign prostate cells. Xenograft mouse models were injected with an MPC inhibitor to evaluate the sensitivity of 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography with computed tomography and radiotherapy of PCa. Furthermore, the molecular mechanism of this different effect of transient blockage towards benign prostate cells and prostate cancer cells was studied in vitro. Results: MPC was elevated in PCa tissue compared with benign prostate tissue, but decreased during cancer progression. The transient blockade increased PCa cell proliferation while decreasing benign prostate cell proliferation, thus increasing the sensitivity of PCa cells to 18F-PET/CT (SUVavg, P = 0.016; SUVmax, P = 0.03) and radiotherapy (P < 0.01). This differential effect of MPC on PCa and benign prostate cells was dependent on regulation by a VDAC1-MPC-mitochondrial homeostasis-glycolysis pathway. Conclusions: Blockade of pyruvate influx into mitochondria increased glycolysis levels in PCa but not in non-carcinoma prostate tissue. This transient blockage sensitized PCa to both detection and radiotherapy, thus indicating that glycolytic potential is a novel mechanism underlying PCa progression. The change in the mitochondrial pyruvate influx caused by transient MPC blockade provides a critical target for PCa diagnosis and treatment.

Highlights 1. Circulating exosomal RNA sequencing identified novel potential biomarkers of clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC). 2. The early diagnostic signature comprising KMT2D and PREX2 showed high accuracy in distinguishing ccRCCs from healthy individuals. 3. The differential diagnostic signature comprising CUL9, KMT2D, and PREX2 showed great performance in distinguishing ccRCCs from benign renal masses. 4. These signatures could be promising and noninvasive biomarkers for ccRCC detection.

ABSTRACT: This study aimed to assess the effect of inbreeding on production traits using a long-term closed-line population recorded for residual feed intake (RFI). The study first used data from a previously reported population to determine the appropriate period of divergent selection for RFI. The results showed that RFI had similar moderate heritability estimates (0.28–0.34) during the fast-growing period (7–12 wk), and RFI at 7 to 10 wk had the highest heritability (0.34). Therefore, divergent selection was performed in a Chinese broiler population for RFI at 7 to 10 wk; the total sample size from generations zero (G0) to 13 was 9050. The divergence between the 2 lines increased steadily throughout generations, resulting in G13 with average RFI values of 304.55 in high RFI (HRFI) males, −160.31 in low RFI (LRFI) males, 296.30 in HRFI females and −157.55 in LRFI females. The feed intake (FI) and feed conversion ratio were almost higher in HRFI broilers than in LRFI broilers, and the magnitude of the difference in FI increased from approximately 4% for both sexes in G1 to approximately 33% in G13. Body weight gain was irregular from G1 to G13 and higher in LRFI broilers than in HRFI broilers after G10. Indeed, the HRFI broilers consumed more food, but they were lighter than LRFI broilers. In G13, LRFI males had heavier slaughter weight, longer cecum length, more white blood cells (WBC), red blood cells (RBC) and hemoglobin (HGB), but triglycerides, lower dressed percentage, percentage of half eviscerated yield, and eviscerated yield than HRFI males. LRFI females had a higher percentage of breast muscle and gizzard yield, longer cecum length, and more WBCs, RBCs and HGB but less abdominal fat and serum total cholesterol than HRFI females. This study was the first to verify that long-term divergent selection for RFI in Chinese broiler chickens is positive and beneficial.

Sea surface temperature (SST) is an important parameter to measure the energy and heat balance of sea surface. The change of sea surface temperature has an important impact on the marine ecosystem, marine climate and marine environment. Therefore, sea surface temperature prediction has become an significant research direction in the field of ocean. This article proposes a DBULSTM-Adaboost model based on ensemble learning. The model is composed of Deep Bidirectional and Unidirectional Long Short Term Memory (DBULSTM) and Adaboost strong learner. DBULSTM can capture the forward and backward dependence of time series, and the DBULSTM model is integrated with Adaboost strong learner to reduce the variance and bias of prediction and realize the short and medium term prediction of SST at a single point scale. Experimental results show that the model can improve the accuracy and stability of SST prediction. Experiments on the East China Sea and South China Sea with different prediction lengths show that the model is almost superior to other classical models in different sea areas and at different prediction levels. Compared with full-connected LSTM (FC-LSTM) model, the root-mean-square error is reduced by about 0.1.

Introduction The perceived health benefits and effectiveness of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) in quitting smoking may affect e-cigarette usage, however, research on the use of e-cigarettes among the Chinese, especially among the rural Chinse, is scarce. This study examined factors associated with perceptions of e-cigarette related harms, benefits, and addictiveness, among smoker and non-smoker households with children in rural China, to support the design of populationbased interventions targeting rural Chinese households. Methods In a cross-sectional study design, using a structured questionnaire, we collected data from the household members of children in two selected rural communities in China. Descriptive analyses were used to characterize respondents; χ 2 test and Fisher’s exact probability test were used to compare the perceptions of e-cigarettes between different sociodemographic groups. Logistic regression was used to determine predictors for e-cigarette harms, benefits, and addictiveness, adjusting for demographic and other characteristics. Results The overall participation rate was 81% (1211/1498). Of the participants, 668 (55%) were smokers and 543 (45%) were non-smokers; 53% knew about e-cigarettes. Abstract The landscape and characteristics of circulating exosomal messenger RNAs (emRNAs) are poorly understood, which hampered the accurate detection of circulating emRNAs. Through comparing RNA sequencing data of circulating exosomes with the corresponding data in tissues, we illustrated the different characteristics of emRNAs compared to tissue mRNAs. We then developed an improved strategy for emRNA detection based on the features of circulating emRNAs. Using the optimized detection strategy, we further validated prostate cancer (PCa) associated emRNAs discovered by emRNA-seq in a large cohort of patients and identified emRNA signatures for PCa screening and diagnosis using logistic regression analysis. The receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) analysis showed that the circulating emRNA-based screening signature yielded an area under the ROC curve (AUC) of 0.948 in distinguishing PCa patients from healthy controls. The circulating emRNA-based diagnostic signature also showed a great performance in predicting prostate biopsy results (AUC: 0.851). In conclusion, our study developed an optimized emRNA detection strategy and identified novel emRNA signatures for the detection of PCa.

Abstract Background Asthma exacerbations in children often require medications, urgent care, and hospitalization. Multiple environmental triggers have been associated with asthma exacerbations, including particulate matter 2.5 (PM2.5) and ozone, which are primarily generated by motor vehicle exhaust. There is mixed evidence as to whether proximity to highways increases risk of asthma exacerbations. Methods To evaluate the impact of highway proximity, we assessed the association between asthma exacerbations and the distance of child’s primary residence to two types of roadways in Durham County, North Carolina, accounting for other patient-level factors. We abstracted data from the Duke University Health System electronic health record (EHR), identifying 6208 children with asthma between 2014 and 2019. We geocoded each child’s distance to roadways (both 35 MPH+ and 55 MPH+). We classified asthma exacerbation severity into four tiers and fitted a recurrent event survival model to account for multiple exacerbations. Results There was a no observed effect of residential distance from 55+ MPH highway (Hazard Ratio: 0.98 (95% confidence interval: 0.94, 1.01)) and distance to 35+ MPH roadway (Hazard Ratio: 0.98 (95% confidence interval: 0.83, 1.15)) and any asthma exacerbation. Even those children living closest to highways (less 0.25 miles) had no increased risk of exacerbation. These results were consistent across different demographic strata. Conclusions While the results were non-significant, the characteristics of the study sample – namely farther distance to roadways and generally good ambient environmental pollution may contribute to the lack of effect. Compared to previous studies, which often relied on self-reported measures, we were able to obtain a more objective assessment of outcomes. Overall, this work highlights the opportunity to use EHR data to study environmental impacts on disease.

BackgroundSince the outbreak of the respiratory infectious disease caused by the novel coronavirus in 2019, the COVID-19 epidemic has posed a serious threat to the life and safety of the public, and has also seriously affected the normal study and life of college students in China. Although a series of studies have been conducted on college students' knowledge, attitudes and practices of COVID-19, the results vary widely. This study aimed to evaluate the pooled estimated level of knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) about COVID-19 among college students in China.MethodsWe conducted a comprehensive search on Scopus, ProQuest, PubMed, EMbase, Web of Science, the Cochrane Library, Chinese Biomedical Literature Database (CBM), China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), VIP Database and Wanfang Database up to 13 February 2022. We then assessed the quality of included studies using a checklist developed by the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) for cross-sectional studies and analyzed using STATA.15 after two researchers independently extracted relevant data and entered them into Microsoft Excel. Funnel plots and Egger's regression tests were used to check for publication bias, and sensitivity analysis was performed to assess the robustness of the results. A random-effects model was used for the meta-analysis, on the basis of which subgroup analyses were performed by time of investigation (study period) and by gender and major of the subjects.ResultA total of 42 studies including 174,440 subjects were included in this review, and the quality of the included studies was mainly intermediate and advanced. The findings of the meta-analysis showed that the overall levels of Chinese college students' knowledge, positive and negative attitudes, and practice of preventive measures towards COVID-19 were 74% (95%CI: 69%-79%), 84% (95%CI: 80%-88%), 31% (95%CI: 23%-38%) and 82% (95%CI: 77%-86%), respectively. The results of subgroup analysis showed that female and medical college students had higher levels of knowledge and practice on COVID-19.ConclusionThe study findings showed that the overall KAP level of college students in China included in the study was relatively optimistic. Influenced by gender, major and time, there were differences in the KAP level of college students. In order to promote the effective prophylaxis and control of pandemic, we recommend implementing targeted measures to improve the awareness rate of COVID-19-related knowledge among this group and the implementation rate of COVID-19 preventive measures among male and non-medical college students.

The hydrodynamic damping characteristics of elastic rotating propeller blades are investigated theoretically and experimentally. Firstly, the modal hydrodynamic damping ratio of propeller blade rotating in water is theoretically predicted based on the cantilever plate theory. Then, a series of tests are designed to determine the mechanical, acoustic radiation and hydrodynamic damping of the first-order bending mode of the rotating blade. During the hydrodynamic damping test, the bending vibration of the blade is excited by the rotation-induced turbulence and measured by two strain gauges attached to the blade root. The results show that the theoretical prediction is in good agreement with the experimental results. The hydrodynamic damping increases linearly with the rotational speed of the propeller. Theoretical analysis also shows that the modal hydrodynamic damping ratio of the first-order bending mode is much larger than that of higher-order bending modes. The hydrodynamic damping decays exponentially with the increase of frequency ratio while increases slightly with the increase of propeller advance ratio which represents the ratio of free stream fluid speed to the propeller tip speed.

Ractopamine, as a feed additive, has attracted much attention due to its excessive use, leading to the damage of the human nervous system and physiological function. Therefore, it is of great practical significance to establish a rapid and effective method for the detection of ractopamine in food. Electrochemical sensors served as a promising technique for efficiently sensing food contaminants due to their low cost, sensitive response and simple operation. In this study, an electrochemical sensor for ractopamine detection based on Au nanoparticles functionalized covalent organic frameworks (AuNPs@COFs) was constructed. The AuNPs@COF nanocomposite was synthesized by in situ reduction and was characterized by FTIR spectroscopy, transmission electron microscope and electrochemical methods. The electrochemical sensing performance of AuNPs@COF-modified glassy carbon electrode for ractopamine was investigated using the electrochemical method. The proposed sensor exhibited excellent sensing abilities towards ractopamine and was used for the detection of ractopamine in meat samples. The results showed that this method has high sensitivity and good reliability for the detection of ractopamine. The linear range was 1.2–1600 μmol/L, and the limit of detection (LOD) was 0.12 μmol/L. It is expected that the proposed AuNPs@COF nanocomposites hold great promise for food safety sensing and should be extended for application in other related fields.

PurposeTo assess the impact of retinopathy and systemic vascular comorbidities on the all-cause mortality in a representative U.S. sample.MethodsA total of 5703 participants (≥40 years old) from the 2005-2008 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. The Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study grading scale was used to evaluate the retinopathy status. Systemic vascular comorbidities included diabetes mellitus (DM), high blood pressure (HBP), chronic kidney disease (CKD) and cardiovascular disease (CVD). Time to death was calculated as the time from baseline to either the date of death or censoring (December 31st, 2015), whichever came first. Risks of mortality were estimated using Cox proportional hazards models after adjusting for confounders and vascular comorbidities.ResultsAfter a median follow-up of 8.33 years (IQR: 7.50-9.67 years), there were 949 (11.8%) deaths from all causes. After adjusting for confounders, the presence of retinopathy predicted higher all-cause mortality (hazard ratio (HR), 1.41; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.08-1.83). The all-cause mortality among participants with both retinopathy and systemic vascular comorbidities including DM (HR, 1.72; 95% CI, 1.21-2.43), HBP (HR, 1.47; 95% CI, 1.03-2.10), CKD (HR, 1.73; 95% CI, 1.26-2.39) and CVD (HR, 1.92; 95% CI, 1.21-3.04) was significantly higher than that among those without either condition. When stratified by diabetic or hypertension status, the co-occurrence of retinopathy and CKD or CVD further increased the all-cause mortality compared to those without either condition.ConclusionsThe co-occurrence of retinopathy and systemic vascular conditions predicted a further increase in the risk of mortality. More extensive vascular risk factor assessment and management are needed to detect the burden of vascular pathologies and improve long-term survival in individuals with retinopathy.

Higher education has evolved in ways that may increase the challenges life science faculty face in providing accommodations for students with disabilities. Guided by Expectancy-Value Theory, we interviewed 34 life sciences faculty instructors from institutions nationwide to explore faculty motivation to create disability-inclusive educational experiences. We found that faculty in our sample perceive that providing most standard accommodations is a manageable but often challenging task. Further, faculty in our sample feel that improving accommodations necessitates additional support from their institutions. Most faculty had high attainment value for providing accommodations, in that they strongly believed that supporting students with disabilities is the fair and right thing to do. However, faculty did not perceive much utility value or intrinsic value in their task of providing accommodations, and most reported that providing accommodations can be a substantial burden on faculty. These findings imply that current approaches to providing inclusive educational experiences for students with disabilities rely primarily on the personal belief that providing accommodations is the right thing to do, which likely results in a flawed and inequitable system given that not all faculty equally share this conviction.

Concealable stigmatized identities (CSIs) are identities that can be kept hidden and carry negative stereotypes. To understand the potential influence instructors have as role models, we must first explore the identities instructors have and whether they disclose those identities to undergraduates. We surveyed national samples of science instructors (n = 1248) and undergraduates (n = 2428) at research institutions to assess the extent to which instructors hold CSIs, whether they reveal those identities to undergraduates, how the prevalence of CSIs among instructors compares to their prevalence among undergraduates, and the reasons instructors reveal or conceal their CSIs. The most common CSIs instructors reported were having anxiety (35%) and being a first-generation college student (29%). Relatively few instructors revealed CSIs to students. The largest mismatches of CSI prevalence were for struggling academically in college (-30%) and having anxiety (-25%); all mismatches grew when accounting for instructor CSI disclosure, highlighting that students perceive fewer role models of scientists with CSIs than actually exist.

Abstract Background Oxidative stress and neuroinflammation are considered the major central events in the process of Parkinson’s disease (PD). Nrf2 is a key regulator of endogenous defense systems. New finds have contacted activation of Nrf2 signaling with anti-inflammatory activities. Therefore, the outstanding inhibition of neuroinflammation or potent Nrf2 signaling activation holds a promising strategy for PD treatment. Icariin (ICA), a natural compound derived from Herba Epimedii, presents a number of pharmacological properties, including anti-oxidation, anti-aging and anti-inflammatory actions. Recent studies have confirmed ICA exerted neuroprotection against neurodegenerative disorders. However, the underlying mechanisms were not fully elucidated. Methods In the present study, mouse nigral stereotaxic injection of 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA)-induced PD model was performed to investigate ICA-conferred dopamine (DA) neuroprotection. In addition, adult Nrf2 knockout mice and primary rat midbrain neuron-glia co-culture was applied to elucidate whether ICA-exerted neuroprotection was through an Nrf2-dependent mechanism. Results Results indicated that ICA attenuated 6-OHDA-induced DA neurotoxicity and glial cells-mediated neuroinflammatory response. Furtherly, activation of Nrf2 signaling pathway in glial cells participated in ICA-produced neuroprotection, as revealed by the following observations. First, ICA enhanced Nrf2 signaling activation in 6-OHDA-induced mouse PD model. Second, ICA failed to generate DA neuroprotection and suppress glial cells-mediated pro-inflammatory factors production in Nrf2 knockout mice. Third, ICA exhibited neuroprotection in primary neuron-glia co-cultures but not in neuron-enriched cultures (without glial cells presence). Either, ICA-mediated neuroprotection was not discerned after Nrf2 siRNA treatment in neuron-glia co-cultures. Conclusions Our findings identify that ICA attenuated glial cells-mediated neuroinflammation and evoked DA neuroprotection via an Nrf2-dependent manner.

The fiWe have cloned two retrotransposons, one named SF-RT from Sogatella furcifera and another named NL-Rt from Nilaparvata lugens genome. Both SF-RT and NL-RT are members of the Daphne clade, and encode two open reading frames (ORFs) required for retrotransposition.We have gotten a methylated DNA fragments screened from S. furcifera genomes by methylation sensitive amplified fragment length polymorphism, and displayed higher cytosine methylation level in macropterous female adults than in brachypterous female adults. The methylated DNA fragment locate in the first ORF from 21bp to 319bp in SF-RT. Semiquantitative PCR analysis indicated that the detected gene fragments of SF-RT had higher expression in brachypterous female adult than in macropterous female adult, it means that the DNA methylationcan decline the gene expression in SF-RT.

Plenoptic imaging has emerged as a representative approach for recording richer visual information from the real world. With the insertion of a microlens array, plenoptic cameras can record both angular and spatial information of a scene on a plenoptic image. However, the large amount of data calls for efficient coding techniques for both transmission and storage. In this paper, we propose a convolutional neural network (CNN)-based macropixel-level up-sampling method for plenoptic image coding. First, a macropixel-based down-sampling method, which performs the down-sampling in the units of macropixels, is developed for reducing the block resolution. Then, an up-sampling CNN is carefully designed to achieve resolution recovery and quality enhancement for down-sampled blocks. The experimental results show that the proposed method achieves considerable bitrate reduction compared with the HEVC/H.265 format SCC extension profile.

ObjectivesTo identify and validate a biomarker panel by serum metabolic profiling for improvement of PCa diagnosis.Materials and MethodsTotally, 134 individuals were included in this study. Among them, 39 PCa patients and 45 control patients (negative prostate biopsy) were involved in the discovery phase and 50 healthy controls were enrolled for validation phase of metabolomics study. LC-MS Analysis was used for the identification of the serum metabolites of patients.ResultsLogistics regression analysis shows that 5 metabolites [dMePE(18:0/18:2), PC(16:0/20:2), PS(15:0/18:2), SM(d16:0/24:1], Carnitine C14:0) were significantly changed in PCa patients compared with control patients. Using a sample of 52 work teams (52 work team leaders and their 348 followers) in China, we investigated the influence mechanism of leaders' work engagement on their followers' work engagement and subjective career success. A multilevel structural equation model (MSEM) was applied to analyze the survey data. The results of this study indicated that leaders' work engagement positively influenced their followers' subjective career success, and this relationship was mediated by the followers' work engagement. Implications of these findings, limitations, and directions for future research are discussed in the final section of the paper.

Background Hypertension remains a leading global cause for premature death and disease. Most treatment guidelines emphasize the importance of risk factors, but not all are known, modifiable, or easily avoided. Population blood pressure correlates with latitude and is lower in summer than winter. Seasonal variations in sunlight exposure account for these differences, with temperature believed to be the main contributor. Recent research indicates that UV light enhances nitric oxide availability by mobilizing storage forms in the skin, suggesting incident solar UV radiation may lower blood pressure. We tested this hypothesis by exploring the association between environmental UV exposure and systolic blood pressure (SBP) in a large cohort of chronic hemodialysis patients in whom SBP is determined regularly. Methods and Results We studied 342 457 patients (36% black, 64% white) at 2178 US dialysis centers over 3 years. Incident UV radiation and temperature data for each clinic location were retrieved from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration database. Linear mixed effects models with adjustment for ambient temperature, sex/age, body mass index, serum Na+/K+ and other covariates were fitted to each location and combined estimates of associations calculated using the DerSimonian and Laird procedure. Pre‐dialysis SBP varied by season and was ≈4 mm Hg higher in black patients. Temperature, UVA and UVB were all linearly and inversely associated with SBP. This relationship remained statistically significant after correcting for temperature. Conclusions In hemodialysis patients, in addition to environmental temperature, incident solar UV radiation is associated with lower SBP. This raises the possibility that insufficient sunlight is a new risk factor for hypertension, perhaps even in the general population.

Marine surveying is an important part of marine environment monitoring systems. In order to improve the accuracy of marine surveying and reduce investment in artificial stations, it is necessary to use high-precision GNSS for shipborne navigation measurements. The basic measurement is based on the survey lines that are already planned by surveyors. In response to the needs of survey vessels sailing to the survey line, a method framework for the shortest route planning is proposed. Then an intelligent navigation system for survey vessels is established, which can be applied to online navigation of survey vessels. The essence of the framework is that the vessel can travel along the shortest route to the designated survey line under the limitation of its own minimum turning radius. Comparison and analysis of experiments show that the framework achieves better optimization. The experimental results show that our proposed method can enable the vessel to sail along a shorter path and reach the starting point of the survey line at the specified angle.

Introduction Although the use of mobile health (mHealth) to promote tobacco control and smoking cessation interventions has been available in developed countries, their use in low- and middle-income countries (i.e. in China) is lacking. This study examined the acceptance of text messaging and/or WeChat based tobacco control intervention among parents who smoke, in rural China. Methods Using a structured questionnaire, we surveyed smoker households (n=668) of children aged ≤5 years in two rural regions of southern China. Descriptive analyses were used to characterize respondents; multivariate regression analysis was used to test the associations between participants’ sociodemographic and other characteristics, and their acceptability of text messaging and/or WeChat intervention for tobacco control. Results After adjusting for other variables (i.e. region, ethnicity, age, education level, occupation, attitudes towards smoking, perception of cigarettes addictiveness, and quitting smoking), the overall knowledge about smoking and secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure significantly predicted a higher acceptance to text messaging/ WeChat intervention (OR=0.567; 95% CI: 0.457–0.704). Participants who thought smoking made people feel relaxed were less likely to accept text messaging/ WeChat intervention than those who did not think so (OR=1.403; 95% CI: 1.080– 1.822). Conclusions Our findings suggest that households in rural China that were more knowledgeable about the hazards of smoking and SHS exposure, and had negative feelings about the benefits of smoking, were more likely to accept text messaging/WeChat for tobacco control intervention. Understanding rural smokers’ preferences to receive intervention and related characteristics can help with the design of targeted tobacco control intervention programs in rural China.

Abstract Background Crocin (CRO), chlorogenic acid (CGA), geniposide (GEN), and quercetin (QUE) are all natural compounds with anti-obesity properties, in particular, hypolipidemic effects, which have been widely used for the treatment of obesity-related metabolic diseases. However, it is not yet known whether these compounds interact synergistically. Here, we investigated the effects and molecular mechanisms of CRO, CGA, GEN, QUE, and a combination of all four compounds (CCGQ), on lipid accumulation in human hepatoma (HepG2 cells). Methods The optimal concentration of CRO, CGA, GEN, QUE to stimulate HepG2 cells proliferation was determined using MTT assay. HepG2 cells were pretreated with 10 μmol/L simvastatin, 1 μmol/L CRO, 30 μmol/L CGA, 10 μmol/L GEN, 10 μmol/L QUE, and CCGQ (a combination of 1 μmol/L CRO, 30 μmol/L CGA, 10 μmol/L GEN, and 10 μmol/L QUE) for 24 or 48 h. Oil red O staining and extracellular TC and TG levels were detected. The RT-PCR was used to observe on cholesterol metabolism-related gene expression. Immunocytochemistry and western-blot assayed the 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme (HMGCR) protein expression in HepG2 cells. Results Compared to those of control, we demonstrated that treating HepG2 cells for 48 h with CCGQ resulted in a strong synergistic effect, causing a marked decrease in lipid deposition in comparison to individual treatments, in both triglyceride and total cholesterol (CRO, 5.74- and 1.49-folds; CGA, 3.38- and 1.12-folds; GEN, 4.04- and 1.44-folds; QUE, 3.36- and 1.24-folds; simvastatin, 5.49- and 1.83-folds; and CCGQ, 7.75- and 2.20-folds), and Oil red O staining assays. In addition, CCGQ treatment increased ATP-binding cassette transporter (ABCA1), cholesterol 7α-hydroxylase (CYP7A1), and AMP-activated protein kinase 2α (AMPKα2) mRNA expression, while decreasing sterol regulatory element binding protein 2 (SREBP2), and liver X receptor alpha (LXRα) mRNA expression. Notably, CCGQ was more effective in decreasing HMGCR expression than the individual treatments. Conclusion The CCGQ combination has potential, both as a complementary therapy for hyperlipemia, and in preventing further obesity-related complications.
