Research on the chiral magneto-optical properties of inorganic nanomaterials has enabled novel applications in advanced optical and electronic devices. However, the corresponding chiral magneto-optical responses have only been studied under strong magnetic fields of ≥1 T, which limits the wider application of these novel materials. In this paper, we report on the enhanced chiral magneto-optical activity of supra-assembled Fe3O4 magnetite nanoparticles in the visible range at weak magnetic fields of 1.5 mT. The spherical supra-assembled particles with a diameter of ∼90 nm prepared by solvothermal synthesis had single-crystal-like structures, which resulted from the oriented attachment of nanograins. They exhibited superparamagnetic behavior even with a relatively large supraparticle diameter that exceeded the size limit for superparamagnetism. This can be attributed to the small size of nanograins with a diameter of ∼12 nm that constitute the suprastructured particles. Magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) measurements at magnetic fields of 1.5 mT showed distinct chiral magneto-optical activity from charge transfer transitions of magnetite in the visible range. For the supraparticles with lower crystallinity, the MCD peaks in the 250-550 nm range assigned as the ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) and the inter-sublattice charge transfer (ISCT) show increased intensities in comparison to those with higher crystallinity samples. On the contrary, the higher crystallinity sample shows higher MCD intensities near 600-700 nm for the intervalence charge transfer (IVCT) transition. The differences in MCD responses can be attributed to the crystallinity determined by the reaction time, lattice distortion near grain boundaries of the constituent nanocrystals, and dipolar interactions in the supra-assembled structures.

Chiral-structured nanoscale materials exhibit chiroptical properties with preferential absorptions of circularly polarized light. The distinctive optical responses of chiral materials have great potential for advanced optical and biomedical applications. However, the fabrication of three-dimensional structures with mirrored nanoscale geometry is still challenging. This study introduces chiral plasmonic nanopatterns in wavy shapes based on the unidirectional alignment of block copolymer thin films and their tilted transfer, combined with buckling processes. The cylindrical nanodomains of polystyrene-iblock/i-poly(2-vinylpyridine) thin films were unidirectionally aligned over a large area by the shear-rolling process. The aligned block copolymer thin films were transferred onto uniaxially prestrained polydimethylsiloxane films at certain angles relative to the stretching directions. The strain was then released to induce buckling. The aligned nanopatterns across the axis of the formed microwrinkles were selectively infiltrated with gold ions. After reduction by plasma treatment, chiral plasmonic nanowave patterns were fabricated with the presence of mirror-reflected circular dichroism spectra. This fabrication method does not require any lithography processing or innately chiral biomaterials, which can be advantageous over other conventional fabrication methods for artificial nanoscale chiral materials.

Hydrogels have diverse chemical properties and can exhibit reversibly large mechanical deformations in response to external stimuli; these characteristics suggest that hydrogels are promising materials for soft robots. However, reported actuators based on hydrogels generally suffer from slow response speed and/or poor controllability due to intrinsic material limitations and electrode fabrication technologies. Here, we report a hydrogel actuator that operates at low voltages ( 50%, energy density > 7 × 10 5 joules per cubic meter, and power density > 3 × 10 4 watts per cubic meter), surpassing existing hydrogel actuators and other types of electroactive soft actuators. The enhanced performance of our actuator is due to the formation of wrinkled nanomembrane electrodes that exhibit high conductivity and excellent mechanical deformation through capillary-assisted assembly of metal nanoparticles and deswelling-induced wrinkled structures. By applying an electric potential through the wrinkled nanomembrane electrodes that sandwich the hydrogel, we were able to trigger a reversible and substantial electroosmotic water flow inside a hydrogel film, which drove the controlled swelling of the hydrogel. The high energy efficiency and power density of our wrinkled nanomembrane electrode–induced actuator enabled the fabrication of an untethered insect-scale aquabot integrated with an on-board control unit demonstrating maneuverability with fast locomotion speed (1.02 body length per second), which occupies only 2% of the total mass of the robot.

The growth of lithium (Li) dendrites reduces the lifespan of Li-metal batteries and causes safety issues. Herein, hierarchically porous aramid nanofiber separators capable of effectively suppressing the Li dendrite growth while maintaining highly stable cycle performances at high charge/discharge rates are reported. A two-step solvent exchange process combined with reprotonation-mediated self-assembly is utilized to control the bimodal porous structure of the separators. In particular, when ethanol and water are used sequentially, aramid nanofibers form hierarchical porous structures containing nanopores in macroporous polymer frameworks to yield a mechanically robust membrane with high porosity of 97% or more. When various optically and/or electronically active materials, such as conjugated polymers, perovskites, metals, and metal oxides, are confined at the nanoscale, they can exhibit unique nano-confined behavior that significantly differs from the behavior observed at the macroscale. Although controlled nano-confinement of functional materials can allow modulation of their electronic properties without the aid of any synthetic methodologies or additional chemical treatments, limited assembly approaches for nano-confinement and insufficient analytical tools for electronic characterization remain critical challenges in the development of novel optoelectronic materials and the investigation of their modulated properties. This review describes how the nano-confined features of organic and inorganic materials are related to the control and improvement of their optoelectronic properties. In particular, we focus on various assembly approaches for effective nano-confinement as well as methods for nano-electronic characterization. Then, we briefly present challenges and perspectives on the direction of nano-confinement in terms of the preparation of optoelectronic materials with desired functionalities. Furthermore, we believe that this review can provide a basis for developing and designing next-generation optoelectronics through nano-confinement.

Highly conductive and porous current collectors that can provide favorable interfacial interaction with sulfur components play a critical role in the performance of lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries. Although three-dimensional (3D) porous textiles have emerged as promising current collector materials, most reported approaches have reached a limit in producing textiles with metal-like conductivity and do not effectively utilize the large surface area of textiles. Here, we introduce a Li–S copolymer cathode with high areal/specific capacity and good rate capability using a metallic cotton textile (CT)-based current collector that exhibits strong interfacial interaction with sulfur. To fabricate the metallic current collector, CT was first carbonized and subsequently electroplated with nickel (Ni). When a sulfur copolymer-based hybrid slurry and layer-by-layer-assembled conductive capping layer were deposited onto the Ni-electroplated CT, the resulting Li–S copolymer cathode displayed significantly enhanced areal capacity, specific capacity, and rate capability. These improvements were realized due to the full utilization of the large conductive surface area of Ni-electroplated CT as well as the effective chemical confinement of soluble lithium polysulfides by a conductive capping layer. The Li–S copolymer cathode prepared in this study outperforms previously reported sulfur copolymer-based cathodes and provides a basis for the development and design of future high-performance electrodes.

Objective: To characterize the use of portal venous or delayed phase CT as an alternative to estimate washout for the non-invasive diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) on gadoxetic acid-enhanced MRI in combination with other features. Methods: This retrospective study included 226 observations (n = 162 patients) at high risk for HCC imaged with gadoxetic acid-enhanced MRI and enhanced liver CT between March 2015 and March 2018. Two radiologists independently evaluated two sets of images and assigned the final Liver Imaging Reporting and Data System (LI-RADS) categories by consensus using gadoxetic acid-enhanced MRI. LR-1, LR-2, LR-5, and LR-M were excluded from the study. The observations were divided using different criteria for washout: hypointensity on the portal venous phase (PVP) at MRI (criteria 1), hypointensity on PVP at MRI and/or hypoattenuation on the PVP/delayed phase at dynamic CT (criteria 2), and hypointensity on the PVP and/or hepatobiliary phase at MRI (criteria 3). The sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy for the diagnosis of HCC were analyzed for each criterion. Results: Using gadoxetic acid-enhanced, 226 lesions were diagnosed as LR-3 or LR-4 by LI-RADS. Among them, 98 and 152 had “washout” at criteria 1 and 2, respectively. For the diagnosis of HCC, criteria 2 and 3 showed significantly higher sensitivities (67.3 and 92.5%, respectively) compared with criteria 1 (35.5%) (p < 0.001). The specificity of criteria 3 (13%) was significantly lower than those of criteria 1 and 2 (40.7% and 38.4%, respectively, p < 0.001). The specificities between criteria 1 and 2 were not statistically different (p = 0.427). Conclusion: Although the LI-RADS lexicon does not permit the interchange of image features among various image modalities, the sensitivity of HCC diagnosis could be improved without any decrease in specificity by adding CT image washout features. Advances in knowledge: Although the LI-RADS lexicon does not permit the interchange of image features among various image modalities, complementary use of dynamic CT in LR-3 or LR-4 categories on the basis of gadoxetic acid-enhanced MRI may contribute to major imaging feature.

Development of soft actuators with higher performance and more versatile controllability has been strongly required for further innovative advancement of various soft applications. Among various soft actuators, electrochemical actuators have attracted much attention due to their lightweight, simple device configuration, and facile low-voltage control. However, the reported performances have not been satisfactory because their working mechanism depends on the limited electrode expansion by conventional electrochemical reactions. Herein, we report an electroosmosis-driven hydrogel actuator with a fully soft monolithic structure-based whole-body actuation mechanism using an amphiphilic interaction-induced layer-by-layer assembly. For this study, cracked electrodes with interconnected metal nanoparticles are prepared on hydrogels through layer-by-layer assembly and shape transformation of metal nanoparticles at hydrophobic/hydrophilic solvent interfaces. Electroosmotic pumping by cracked electrodes instantaneously induces hydrogel swelling through reversible and substantial hydraulic flow. The resultant actuator exhibits actuation strain of higher than 20% and energy density of 1.06 × 105 J m-3, allowing various geometries (e.g., curved-planar and square-pillared structures) and motions (e.g., slow-relaxation, spring-out, and two degree of freedom bending). In particular, the energy density of our actuators shows about 10-fold improvement than those of skeletal muscle, electrochemical actuators, and various stimuli-responsive hydrogel actuators reported to date.

A few critical issues in preparing transparent conductive electrodes (TCEs) based on solution-processable conductive nanomaterials are their low electrical conductivity and the unfavorable trade-off between electrical conductivity and optical transparency, which are closely related to the organic ligands bound to the nanomaterial surface. In particular, bulky/insulating organic ligands bound to the surface of conductive nanomaterials unavoidably act as high contact resistance sites at the interfaces between neighboring nanomaterials, which adversely affects the charge transfer kinetics of the resultant TCEs. This article reviews the latest research status of various interfacial control approaches for solution-processable TCEs. We describe how these approaches can be effectively applied to conductive nanomaterials and how interface-controlled conductive nanomaterials can be employed to improve the electrical and/or electrochemical performance of various transparent nanocomposite electrodes, including TCEs, energy storage electrodes, and electrochromic electrodes. Last, we provide perspectives on the development direction for next-generation transparent nanocomposite electrodes and breakthroughs for significantly mitigating the complex trade-off between their electrical/electrochemical performance and optical transparency.

Here, we report that metal nanoparticle (NP)-based paper/textile electrodes with bulk metallic conductivity can be prepared via organic linker-modulated ligand exchange reaction and in situ room-temperature metallic fusion without additional chemical or thermal treatments. For this study, amine-functionalized molecule linkers instead of bulky polymer linkers were layer-by-layer (LbL)-assembled with tetraoctylammonium bromide (TOABr)-stabilized Au NPs to form Au NP multilayered films. By conversion of the amine groups of the organic molecule linkers from -NH3+ to the -NH2 groups, as well as by a decrease in the size of the organic linkers, the LbL-assembled Au NPs became highly interconnected and fused during LbL deposition, resulting in Au NP multilayers with adjustable conductivity and transport behavior. These phenomena were also predicted by a density functional theory investigation for the model system. Particularly, LbL-assembled films composed of TOABr-Au NPs and diethylenetriamine ( Mw: ∼104) exhibited a remarkable electrical conductivity of 2.2 × 105 S·cm-1, which was higher than the electrical conductivity of the metal NP-based electrodes as well as the carbon material-based electrodes reported to date. Furthermore, based on our approach, a variety of insulating flexible papers and textiles were successfully converted into real metal-like paper and textile electrodes with high flexibility preserving their highly porous structure. This approach can provide a basis for further improving and controlling the electrical properties of flexible electrodes through the control of organic linkers.

Energy-harvesting devices such as piezoelectric and triboelectric nanogenerators (NGs), which can convert mechanical energy into electricity, are under development to be combined with various electronics. In particular, the rapid progress in microscale electronics such as nanorobotics or microelectromechanical devices has strongly increased the demand for ultrathin film devices. Therefore, the thickness, highly uniform structure, chemical composition, interfacial adhesion/interactions, and electrical performance of electrically active films should be carefully considered for high-performance ultrathin energy-harvesting devices. This review focuses on how layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly as a kind of thin film technology can be effectively applied to ultrathin piezoelectric and triboelectric films, and furthermore enhance device performance. First, we introduce the basics of various LbL assemblies using electrostatic, hydrogen-bonding, and covalent-bonding interactions. Then, the LbL-assembly-assisted piezoelectric and triboelectric NGs reported to date are reviewed. Finally, we briefly present perspectives on the direction of LbL assembly for the realization of various ultrathin piezoelectric and triboelectric NGs with high performance.

Biofuel cells, which can convert chemical energy into electricity have been considered as one of the most promising candidates for powering implantable and microscale biomedical devices. However, most biofuel cells generate a low power output, limiting their practical applications. Here, we introduce a high-performance biofuel cell based on gold nanoparticle-modified carbon nanotube hybrid fibers. These hybrid electrodes could be converted into anodes through additional enzyme deposition and used directly as cathodes, allowing notable oxygen reduction reaction activity as well as high electrical conductivity (∼6100 S cm−1). The formed hybrid biofuel cell, composed of an enzymatic anode and a gold nanoparticle-coated carbon fiber cathode, provides an outstanding stationary power output of 1.2 mW cm−2 under a fixed external resistance (cyclic voltammetry measurement ∼2.1 mW cm−2) at 300 mmol L−1 glucose. Furthermore, these one-dimensional hybrid electrodes with extremely high electrical conductivity can be widely applied in various wire-type electrochemical devices.

Biofuel cells, which convert chemical energy into electrical energy at mild temperature and over moderate pH ranges, have been considered some of the most promising candidates for powering biomedical devices. However, most biofuel cells provide low power output and short-term operational stability due to their poor electron transfer. To address these issues, we use a unique amphiphilic assembly method to generate hybrid biofuel cells with high power output and good operational stability. This approach can induce favorable interfacial interactions between electrocatalysts and significantly improve the electron transfer kinetics of electrodes. In this study, glucose oxidase (in aqueous media) is repeatedly assembled with hydrophobic metal nanoparticles (in nonpolar media) on a conductive textile. The formed biofuel cell exhibits remarkably high power output (7.3 mW cm−2) and good operational durability. We believe that our assembly approach can provide a basis for preparing a variety of high-performance bioelectrochemical devices, including biofuel cells.

Electrical conductivity, mechanical flexibility, and large electroactive surface areas are the most important factors in determining the performance of various flexible electrodes in energy storage devices. Herein, a layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly-induced metal electrodeposition approach is introduced to prepare a variety of highly porous 3D-current collectors with high flexibility, metallic conductivity, and large surface area. A luminescent solar concentrator-based photovoltaic system (LSC-PVs) is highly transparent because it harvests solar light via the LSC, a transparent panel containing only fluorophores, and is, therefore, promising as a PV window. However, for the practical use of LSC-PV, achieving high efficiency remains a challenge. Here, we demonstrate an LSC-PV, which is based on the combination of an upconversion (UC)-assisted dual band harvesting LSC and perovskite solar cells (PSCs). We prepare a dual LSC panel consisting of a downshift (DS) LSC that absorbs violet light and an LSC that upconverts the red light. We apply a highly efficient mixed halide PSC with an efficiency of 17.22%. We control the thickness of the LSC panel as well as the dye concentration to maximize the emission from dual LSCs. The dual LSCs coupled with a PSC exhibit a high average-visible-transmittance of 82% and achieve a maximum efficiency of 7.53% at 1 sun (AM 1.5G) illumination. The dual LSC–PSC exhibits a constant efficiency even under oblique solar light illumination and a stable operation with an efficiency retention of 80%.

Organic-ligand-based solution processes of metal and transition metal oxide (TMO) nanoparticles (NPs) have been widely studied for the preparation of electrode materials with desired electrical and electrochemical properties for various energy devices. However, the ligands adsorbed on NPs have a significant effect on the intrinsic properties of materials, thus influencing the performance of bulk electrodes assembled by NPs for energy devices. To resolve these critical drawbacks, numerous approaches have focused on developing unique surface chemistry that can exchange bulky ligands with small ligands or remove bulky ligands from NPs after NP deposition. In particular, recent studies have reported that the ligand-exchange-induced layer-by-layer (LE-LbL) assembly of NPs enables controlled assembly of NPs with the desired interparticle distance, and interfaces, dramatically improving the electrical/electrochemical performance of electrodes. This emerging approach also demonstrates that efficient surface ligand engineering can exploit the unique electrochemical properties of individual NPs and maximize the electrochemical performance of the resultant NP-assembled electrodes through improved charge transfer efficiency. This report focuses on how LE-LbL assembly can be effectively applied to NP-based energy storage/conversion electrodes. First, the basic principles of the LE-LbL approach are introduced and then recent progress on NP-based energy electrodes prepared via the LE-LbL approach is reviewed.

To assess image features for diagnosing LR-M in the Liver Imaging Reporting and Data System (LI-RADS) version 2018 on gadoxetic acid-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and evaluate inter-reader agreement and imaging-pathology correlation. A total of 65 patients diagnosed as LR-M who underwent preoperative gadoxetic acid-enhanced MRI between September 2016 and March 2019 were included retrospectively. All patients were pathologically confirmed and MR images were reviewed by two radiologists without any information of patient history. The intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and the Chi-square test were used to evaluate inter-reader agreement and imaging-pathology correlation, respectively. Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC, n = 23), intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (CCA, n = 18), metastasis (n = 10), chronic inflammation (n = 7), combined HCC–CCA (n = 5), sarcoma (n = 1), and neuroendocrine tumor (n = 1) were confirmed. Overall ICC values showed near-perfect to substantial agreement (ranges 0.690–0.887). An assessment of a potential imaging-pathology relationship revealed that HCC, CCA, and chronic inflammation were correlated with ‘not showing delayed central enhancement’ (p = 0.01), ‘other feature suggesting non-HCC malignancy (biliary dilatation and liver surface retraction)’ (p = 0.03), and ‘infiltrative appearance’ (p = 0.00). One or more LR-M image features observed together with biliary dilatation or liver surface retraction, suggested CCA as high specificity (89.4%) and diagnostic accuracy (83.1%). Most of the LR-M image features were not correlated with pathologic diagnosis. However, if one or more of the LR-M features were combined with other well-known image features, diagnostic performance of the LR-M could be improved.

Nanocomposites with aligned nanofillers have received significant attention because of their excellent mechanical properties. However, because of the difficulty in identifying interfacial interactions in mechanical responses, the anisotropic dynamic mechanical properties of aligned nanocomposites, especially those with high reinforcement contents, are not fully understood. In this study, aligned aramid nanofiber/poly(vinyl alcohol) (ANF/PVA) nanocomposites with a nanofiller volume fraction of 48% are fabricated by using the swelling-assisted stretching method. This method enabled high degree of alignment of the ANF nanofibers with a sheath of PVA matrix. Enhancement of mechanical strength and stiffness is attributed to improvements of interfacial interactions between aligned ANFs and PVA via effective stress transfer. The damping properties are varied by activation of different dissipation modes, such as the stick–slip and reversible matrix-tearing at the interfaces, that are dependent to the loading angle relative to the nanofiber alignment direction. Resultant viscoelastic properties evaluated by the weight-adjusted viscoelastic figure of merits, the combination of stiffness and damping properties, exceed the conventional limit line up to three folds in magnitude. Deepening the understanding of anisotropic dynamic mechanical responses is required for designing aligned nanocomposite materials for mechanical and electronic applications.

We investigate the operational instability of quantum dot (QD)-based light-emitting diodes (QLEDs). Spectroscopic analysis on the QD emissive layer within devices in chorus with the optoelectronic and electrical characteristics of devices discloses that the device efficiency of QLEDs under operation is indeed deteriorated by two main mechanisms. The first is the luminance efficiency drop of the QD emissive layer in the running devices owing to the accumulation of excess electrons in the QDs, which escalates the possibility of nonradiative Auger recombination processes in the QDs. The other is the electron leakage toward hole transport layers (HTLs) that accompanies irreversible physical damage to the HTL by creating nonradiative recombination centers. These processes are distinguishable in terms of the time scale and the reversibility, but both stem from a single origin, the discrepancy between electron versus hole injection rates into QDs. Based on experimental and calculation results, we propose mechanistic models for the operation of QLEDs in individual quantum dot levels and their degradation during operation and offer rational guidelines that promise the realization of high-performance QLEDs with proven operational stability.

We demonstrate a direct-write patternable water-based poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): poly (styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) composite ink which is capable of providing highly stretchable and washing-resistant electrodes on a fabric substrate for electronic textile applications. An aqueous composite ink consisting of PEDOT:PSS, graphene oxide nanosheets and anionic polyurethane does readily not permeated into hygroscopic fabric, which facilitate direct drawing of fine PEDOT electrode on the fabric without undesired blur effect. This limited permeation of aqueous PEDOT composite ink on the hygroscopic fabric is mainly originated from the intermolecular interactions of anionic polyurethane including hydrogen bonding with water molecules, and charge balancing interactions with PEDOT chains. Furthermore, addition of the graphene oxide nanosheets contributes to enhance the electrical conductivity of the composite by improving crystallization of PEDOT molecules. The PEDOT composite film shows unique structure of the PEDOT nanofibril network embedded by the polyurethane matrix, which resulted in an enough electrical pathway for charge carriers even though only 2.9 wt% of PEDOT:PSS existed in the composite film. The PEDOT composite film exhibited electrical conductivity of 4.6 S/cm, extremely high stretchability of 375% rupture strain, and high durability for repeated washing process with strong bleaching agent. Light emitting diode incorporated on the stretchable spandex with interconnects of the PEDOT composite pattern showed that LED light intensity was almost maintained even with stretching of PEDOT interconnects to 290%.

We introduce high-performance supercapacitor electrodes with ternary components prepared from consecutive amphiphilic ligand-exchange-based layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly among amine-functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (NH2-MWCNTs) in alcohol, oleic acid-stabilized Fe3O4 nanoparticles (OA-Fe3O4 NPs) in toluene, and semiconducting polymers (PEDOT:PSS) in water. The periodic insertion of semiconducting polymers within the (OA-Fe3O4 NP/NH2-MWCNT)n multilayer-coated indium tin oxide (ITO) electrode enhanced the volumetric and areal capacitances up to 408 ± 4 F cm−3 and 8.79 ± 0.06 mF cm−2 at 5 mV s−1, respectively, allowing excellent cycling stability (98.8% of the initial capacitance after 5000 cycles) and good rate capability. These values were higher than those of the OA-Fe3O4 NP/NH2-MWCNT multilayered electrode without semiconducting polymer linkers (volumetric capacitance ∼241 ± 4 F cm−3 and areal capacitance ∼1.95 ± 0.03 mF cm−2) at the same scan rate. Furthermore, when the asymmetric supercapacitor cells (ASCs) were prepared using OA-Fe3O4 NP- and OA-MnO NP-based ternary component electrodes, they displayed high volumetric energy (0.36 mW h cm−3) and power densities (820 mW cm−3).

In this study, we introduce hydrophobic and hydrophilic graphene oxide nanosheet (GON) catalysts prepared by consecutive ligand replacement of hydrophobically stabilized magnetic and catalytic nanoparticles (NPs); it exhibits high catalytic activity, fast magnetic response, and good dispersion in both nonpolar and aqueous media, allowing high loading amount of magnetic and catalytic NPs onto GON sheets. More specifically, these GON catalysts showed a high product yield of 66–99% and notable recyclability (93% of the initial product yield after 10 reaction cycles) in a Suzuki–Miyaura reaction in nonpolar media, outperforming the performance of the conventional hydrophilic GON catalysts. Additional coating of a hydrophilic layer onto GON catalysts also showed the notable performance (product yield ∼99%) in catalytic reactions performed in aqueous media. Given that ligand-controlled catalytic NPs adsorbed onto 2D nanosheets can be used as hydrophobic and hydrophilic stabilizers as well as catalysts, our approach can provide a tool for developing and designing 2D-nanosheet catalysts with high performance in nonpolar and polar media.

We introduce a layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly-induced triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) with a high and stable electric output under a wide range of humidity conditions. In this study, highly porous (cationic poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH)/anionic poly(acrylic acid) (PAA))n multilayer films were prepared via a pH-controlled electrostatic LbL assembly with a subsequent acid treatment and were used as a mold for the triboelectric poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) replica. The electrical output of the TENGs composed of a protuberant PDMS plate and Al electrodes significantly increased based on the evolution of the nano-/micro-structured PDMS bumps. Particularly, the protuberant PDMS film molded from the porous (1.5 mg mL−1 PAH/0.5 mg mL−1 PAA)20 multilayers displayed a high open-circuit voltage output of 242 V and a short-circuit current density of 16.2 μA cm−2 under a compressive force of 90 N in a relative humidity (RH) of 20%. When this hierarchical PDMS surface was additionally modified by fluorine self-assembled monolayer, the voltage output and current density of the resultant TENG at the same experimental conditions were increased up to approximately 288 V and 17 μA cm−2, respectively, exhibiting a remarkably high humidity-resistant electrical performance (16% loss of the initial voltage at 80% RH).

This study aimed to evaluate image quality and diagnostic performance of a recently developed navigated three-dimensional magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (3D-MRCP) with compressed sensing (CS) based on parallel imaging (PI) and conventional 3D-MRCP with PI only in patients with abnormal bile duct dilatation. This institutional review board-approved study included 45 consecutive patients [non-malignant common bile duct lesions (n = 21) and malignant common bile duct lesions (n = 24)] who underwent MRCP of the abdomen to evaluate bile duct dilatation. All patients were imaged at 3T (MR 750, GE Healthcare, Waukesha, WI) including two kinds of 3D-MRCP using 352 × 288 matrices with and without CS based on PI. Two radiologists independently and blindly assessed randomized images. CS acceleration reduced the acquisition time on average 5 min and 6 s to a total of 2 min and 56 s. The all CS cine image quality was significantly higher than standard cine MR image for all quantitative measurements. Diagnostic accuracy for benign and malignant lesions is statistically different between standard and CS 3D-MRCP. Total image quality and diagnostic accuracy at biliary obstruction evaluation demonstrates that CS-accelerated 3D-MRCP sequences can provide superior quality of diagnostic information in 42.5% less time. This has the potential to reduce motion-related artifacts and improve diagnostic efficacy.
