Bistability is a ubiquitous phenomenon in life sciences. In this paper, two kinds of bistable structures in two-dimensional dynamical systems are studied: one is two one-point attractors, another is a one-point attractor accompanied by a cycle attractor. By the Conley index theory, we prove that there exist other isolated invariant sets besides the two attractors, and also obtain the possible components and their configuration. Moreover, we find that there is always a separatrix or cycle separatrix, which separates the two attractors. Finally, the biological meanings and implications of these structures are given and discussed.

As a class of Lévy type Markov generators, nonlocal Waldenfels operators appear naturally in the context of investigating stochastic dynamics under Lévy fluctuations and constructing Markov processes with boundary conditions (in particular the construction with jumps). This work is devoted to prove the weak and strong maximum principles for ‘parabolic’ equations with nonlocal Waldenfels operators. Applications in stochastic differential equations with α-stable Lévy processes are presented to illustrate the maximum principles.

This work focuses on the dynamics of particles in a confined geometry with position-dependent diffusivity, where the confinement is modelled by a periodic channel consisting of unit cells connected by narrow passage ways. We consider three functional forms for the diffusivity, corresponding to the scenarios of a constant ( D _0 ), as well as a low ( D _m ) and a high ( D _d ) mobility diffusion in cell centre of the longitudinally symmetric cells. Due to the interaction among the diffusivity, channel shape and external force, the system exhibits complex and interesting phenomena. By calculating the probability density function, mean velocity and mean first exit time with the Itô calculus form, we find that in the absence of external forces the diffusivity D _d will redistribute particles near the channel wall, while the diffusivity D _m will trap them near the cell centre. The superposition of external forces will break their static distributions. Besides, our results demonstrate that for the diffusivity D _d , a high dependence on the x coordinate (parallel with the central channel line) will improve the mean velocity of the particles. In contrast, for the diffusivity D _m , a weak dependence on the x coordinate will dramatically accelerate the moving speed. In addition, it shows that a large external force can weaken the influences of different diffusivities; inversely, for a small external force, the types of diffusivity affect significantly the particle dynamics. In practice, one can apply these results to achieve a prominent enhancement of the particle transport in two- or three-dimensional channels by modulating the local tracer diffusivity via an engineered gel of varying porosity or by adding a cold tube to cool down the diffusivity along the central line, which may be a relevant effect in engineering applications. Effects of different stochastic calculi in the evaluation of the underlying multiplicative stochastic equation for different physical scenarios are discussed.

The authors investigate dynamical behavior of multi-dimensional dynamical systems. These are the systems with a multi-dimensional independent ``time" variable. Especially they consider the problem of concordance, in the sense of Shcherbakov, of limit points and heteroclinic or homoclinic points for multi-dimensional dynamical systems and solutions of the multi-dimensional non-autonomous differential equations.

This paper is devoted to the investigation of random dynamics of the stochastic Boussinesq equations driven by Lévy noise. Some fundamental properties of a subordinator Lévy process and the stochastic integral with respect to a Lévy process are discussed, and then the existence, uniqueness, regularity, and the random dynamical system generated by the stochastic Boussinesq equations are established. Finally, some discussions on the global weak solution of the stochastic Boussinesq equations driven by general Lévy noise are also presented.

This paper is devoted to the study of mild solutions for the initial and boundary value problem of stochastic viscous Cahn-Hilliard equation driven by white noise. Under reasonable assumptions we first prove the existence and uniqueness result. Then, we show that the existence of a stochastic global attractor which pullback attracts each bounded set in appropriate phase spaces.

Complex systems display variability over a broad range of spatial and temporal scales. Some scales are unresolved due to computational limitations. The impact of these unresolved scales on the resolved scales needs to be parameterized or taken into account. One stochastic parameterization scheme is devised to take the effects of unresolved scales into account, in the context of solving a nonlinear partial differential equation with memory (a time-integral term), via large eddy simulations. The obtained large eddy simulation model is a stochastic partial differential equation. Numerical experiments are performed to compare the solutions of the original system and of the stochastic large eddy simulation model.
