Abstract Endometriosis is a prevalent gynecological condition characterized by chronic pelvic pain, dysmenorrhea, and infertility, affecting ≈176 million women of reproductive age worldwide. Current treatments, including pharmacological and surgical interventions, are often associated with significant side effects and high recurrence rates. Consequently, there is an urgent need for innovative and safer therapeutic approaches. In this study, an injectable magnetic hydrogel nanosystem is developed designed for the dual‐purpose magnetothermal and anti‐inflammatory treatment of endometriosis. This hydrogel incorporates Fe3O4 nanoparticles alongside an anti‐inflammatory peptide. Upon magnetic activation, the Fe3O4 nanoparticles induce a localized hyperthermic response, raising the temperature of endometriotic lesions to 63.3 °C, effectively destroying endometriotic cells. Concurrently, the thermally responsive hydrogel facilitates the controlled release of the anti‐inflammatory peptide, thus modulating the inflammatory milieu. The biocompatibility and complete in vivo degradability of the hydrogel further enhance its therapeutic potential. The in vivo studies demonstrated that this injectable magnetic hydrogel system achieved a 90% reduction in the volume of endometriotic lesions and significantly decreased inflammatory markers, offering a promising non‐invasive treatment modality for endometriosis. By integrating precise lesion ablation with the modulation of the inflammatory microenvironment, this system represents a novel approach to the clinical management of endometriosis.

Background: Ovarian cancer (OC) is a major cause of gynecological cancer-related death in the world. Liquid biopsy has shown great potential in improving the ovarian cancer detection and treatment. The aim of this study is to explore the previous studies, current hotspots, and future trends of liquid biopsy for OC from a bibliometric perspective. Methods: Articles on liquid biopsy in the field of OC were collected from Web of Science (Clarivate Analytics). Subsequently, bibliometric and visual analyses was conducted using bibliometrix, VOSviewer, CiteSpace, and Microsoft Excel. Results: A total of 504 scientific papers were retrieved over a 25-year period, of which 285 papers were in the language of English. China has the highest number and other papers came from 41 countries or regions. The journal with the highest publication count was Cancers. There were 2013 authors in total, and Kasimir-Bauer S emerged as the most productive author. The key words that are still exploding are recurrence, predictive value and survival. Conclusion: Research on liquid biopsy is booming in the field of OC. This article comprehensively elucidates the subject matter over recent years, and points out emerging trends for in-depth exploration.

Key Clinical Message We present a rare case of a female pelvic solitary fibrous tumor unsuccessfully resected using single‐port laparoscopy, requiring conversion to laparotomy. Although the resection was successful, the surgical approach could have been improved. For large tumors, minimally invasive results are possible with flexible choices of equipment and incision position.

Cytoskeleton plays a significant role in the shape change, migration, movement, adhesion, cytokinesis, and phagocytosis of tumor cells. In clinical practice, some anti-cancer drugs achieve cytoskeletal therapeutic effects by acting on different cytoskeletal protein components. However, in the absence of cell-specific targeting, unnecessary cytoskeletal recombination in organisms would be disastrous, which would also bring about severe side effects during anticancer process. Nanomedicine have been proven to be superior to some small molecule drugs in cancer treatment due to better stability and targeting, and lower side effects. Therefore, this review summarized the recent developments of various nanomaterials disturbing cytoskeleton for enhanced cancer therapeutics, including carbon, noble metals, metal oxides, black phosphorus, calcium, silicon, polymers, peptides, and metal-organic frameworks, etc. A comprehensive analysis of the characteristics of cytoskeleton therapy as well as the future prospects and challenges towards clinical application were also discussed. We aim to drive on this emerging topic through refreshing perspectives based on our own work and what we have also learnt from others. This review will help researchers quickly understand relevant cytoskeletal therapeutic information to further advance the development of cancer nanomedicine.

Nanomaterials with excellent optical, electric, magnetic, and other physicochemical properties, are generally used in photodynamic therapy, chemodynamic therapy, and photothermal therapy of cancer. To enhance nanomaterials’ superior physicochemical properties and improve cancer theranostic efficiency, various strategies have been proposed. Among them, the introduction of sulfur vacancy defects is a promising strategy for enhanced cancer theranostics. In this review, the formation and action mechanism of sulfur vacancy nanomaterials, as well as their application in cancer theranostics are first summarized. Then, the principle and application of various sulfur vacancy based-nanomaterials such as molybdenum, bismuth, zinc, copper, iron, ruthenium, silver, cobalt, cadmium, and polythionine in enhancing cancer therapy are highlighted. Finally, the future development prospect and current challenges of sulfur vacancy nanomaterials are also discussed. This review will help researchers quickly understand the information related to various sulfur vacancy-based nanomaterials in cancer therapy, promoting the further development of anti-cancer nanomedicine.

Abstract Surgical resection is a widely used method for the treatment of solid tumor cancers. However, the inhibition of tumor recurrence and metastasis are the main challenges of postoperative tumor therapy. Traditional intravenous or oral administration have poor chemotherapeutics bioavailability and undesirable systemic toxicity. Polymeric hydrogels with a three-dimensional network structure enable on-site delivery and controlled release of therapeutic drugs with reduced systemic toxicity and have been widely developed for postoperative adjuvant tumor therapy. Among them, because of the simple synthesis, good biocompatibility, biodegradability, injectability, and multifunctionality, iron-based hydrogels have received extensive attention. This review has summarized the general synthesis methods and construction principles of iron-based hydrogels, highlighted the latest progress of iron-based hydrogels in postoperative tumor therapy, including chemotherapy, photothermal therapy, photodynamic therapy, chemo-dynamic therapy, and magnetothermal-chemical combined therapy, etc. In addition, the challenges towards clinical application of iron-based hydrogels have also been discussed. This review is expected to show researchers broad perspectives of novel postoperative tumor therapy strategy and provide new ideas in the design and application of novel iron-based hydrogels to advance this sub field in cancer nanomedicine.

Ferroptosis, as a recently discovered non-apoptotic programmed cell death with an iron-dependent form, has attracted great attention in the field of cancer nanomedicine. However, many ferroptosis-related nano-inducers encountered unexpected limitations such as immune exposure, low circulation time, and ineffective tumor targeting. Biomimetic nanomaterials possess some unique physicochemical properties which can achieve immune escape and effective tumor targeting. Especially, certain components of biomimetic nanomaterials can further enhance ferroptosis. Therefore, this review will provide a comprehensive overview on recent developments of biomimetic nanomaterials in ferroptosis-related cancer nanomedicine. First, the definition and character of ferroptosis and its current applications associated with chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and immunotherapy for enhancing cancer theranostics were briefly discussed. Subsequently, the advantages and limitations of some representative biomimetic nanomedicines, including biomembranes, proteins, amino acids, polyunsaturated fatty acids, and biomineralization-based ferroptosis nano-inducers, were further spotlighted. This review would therefore help the spectrum of advanced and novice researchers who are interested in this area to quickly zoom in the essential information and glean some provoking ideas to advance this subfield in cancer nanomedicine.

Photothermal therapy (PTT), as a noninvasive and local treatment, has emerged as a promising anti-tumor strategy with minimal damage to normal tissue under spatiotemporally controllable irradiation. However, the necrosis of cancer cells during PTT will induce an inflammatory reaction, which may motivate tumor regeneration and resistance to therapy. In this study, polyoxometalates and a chloroquine diphosphate (CQ) co-loaded metal–organic framework nanoplatform with hyaluronic acid coating was constructed for efficient ovarian cancer therapy and anti-inflammation. Our results demonstrated that this nanoplatform not only displayed considerable photothermal therapeutic capacity under 808 nm near-infrared laser, but also had an impressive anti-inflammatory capacity by scavenging reactive oxygen species in the tumor microenvironment. CQ with pH dependence was used for the deacidification of lysosomes and the inhibition of autophagy, cutting off a self-protection pathway induced by cell necrosis–autophagy, and achieving the synergistic treatment of tumors. Therefore, we combined the excellent properties of these materials to synthesize a nanoplatform and explored its therapeutic effects in various aspects. This work provides a promising novel prospect for PTT/anti-inflammation/anti-autophagy combinations for efficient ovarian cancer treatment through the fine tuning of material design.

Recent studies suggest that autophagy is highly involved in insulin resistance (IR). Inhibition of the PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling pathway induces autophagy activation. Additionally, depletion of LRP6 has been shown to increase insulin sensitivity but its mechanism is still not clear. We hypothesized that LRP6 contributes to IR by regulating mTOR mediated autophagy through GSK3β in hepatocytes. LO2 hepatocytes were treated with palmitate (PA) and insulin to induced IR. Levels of LRP6 mRNA and protein expression were measured by real time-PCR and western blot analysis. LRP6 knock down was achieved by adenovirus mediated Si-LRP6 expression and its roles in IR, glucose, GSK3β, mTOR signaling, and autophagy were explored. Finally, GSK3β was overexpressed and its involvement in autophagy and IR was examined. We found that PA treatment led to a reduced glucose uptake and IR in hepatocytes, which was accompanied by an upregulation of LRP6 expression. Knocking down of LRP6 enhanced glucose uptake and insulin sensitivity in PA treated cells, probably through increasing GSK3b activity. Overexpression of GSK3b mimicked LRP6 reduction by enhancing autophagy and ameliorating IR. Our study revealed a significant molecular mechanism connecting LRP6 to insulin sensitivity through GSK3β-mTOR mediated autophagy.

To improve the synthetic ability of E. coli L-isoleucine by combining λ-Red recombination with complex mutagenesis. Firstly, taking E. coli NXA as the original strain, λ-Red homologous recombination was used to knock out the coding gene brnQ of branched chain amino acid transport protein to obtain mutant strain E. coli NXA1. Secondly, E. coli NXA1 was subjected to multiple rounds of complex mutagenesis with atmospheric room temperature plasma (ARTP), ultraviolet (UV), and nitrosoguanidine (NTG), which was screened to obtain the mutant strain E. coli NXA2 with α-AB being structural analogue. The fermentation results showed that L-isoleucine titer of E. coli NXA1 was 2.76 g/L, which was 33.98% higher than E. coli NXA after fermentation for 40 hours at 37 ℃ and 200 r/min. The L-isoleucine titer of E. coli NXA2 was 3.22 g/L, which was 16.67% higher than E. coli NXA1 and 56.31% higher than E. coli NXA. After 20 continuous passages of E. coli NXA2, the good genetic stability could be reflected. The combination of λ-Red recombination and complex mutagenesis has a significant effect on improving the synthetic ability of E. coli L-isoleucine, laying a theoretical basis for the breeding of L-isoleucine high-producing strains.

Abstract Background Schistosomiasis is a disease primarily caused by eggs laid by pathogens called schistosomes. Among the schistosome species infecting humans, Schistosoma japonicum possesses the largest fecundity; each adult female produces an average of 3500 eggs per day. The lack of proper culture conditions supporting continuous oviposition in vitro has precluded detailed investigation of mechanisms regulating sexual maturation and egg production in Schistosoma japonicum. Methods We optimized in vitro culture conditions by replacing reagents that are part of the classical ABC169 medium. Fast Blue BB staining and 4′,6-diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI) labeling were applied to observe the sexual development status of the females. In vitro RNA interference (RNAi) technology was used to validate the capability of the modified medium. The detection of male β-alanyl-tryptamine (BATT) was conducted using liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC–MS). Results Both m-AB169 (1640) and AB169 (1640) media are capable of facilitating the sexual development of paired virgin female S. japonicum, as well as sustaining the mature reproductive organs and egg production of adult S. japonicum for at least 22 days in vitro. M-AB169 (1640) provided a more stable condition for supporting the sexual maturity of female S. japonicum, as evidenced by the consistent initiation of egg production compared with AB169 (1640). Through a comparative analysis of S. japonicum and S. mansoni in diverse media, we demonstrated that these closely related species display distinct demands for their sexual development and egg production, suggesting a potential influence of nutritional factors on the observed variations in host ranges among different schistosome species. Importantly, we successfully identified the presence of the pheromone β-alanyl-tryptamine (BATT) in S. japonicum, previously identified in S. mansoni, highlighting its conserved role in schistosome reproductive development. Through the employment of double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) treatment to silence two genes that are involved in either the male (gli1, glioma-associated oncogene homolog 1) or female (vf1, vitellogenic factor 1) side in male-induced female reproductive development of S. mansoni, we confirmed that the combination of m-AB169 (1640) and RNAi technology has the capacity to facilitate in vitro studies of S. japonicum’s reproductive and oviposition processes. Conclusions We developed a novel medium, m-AB169 (1640), that not only maintains the mature reproductive organs and continuous oviposition of adult female Schistosoma japonicum for up to 22 days but also supports the reproductive development and subsequent egg-laying of virgin females after pairing with male worms. This study provides a valuable in vitro platform for functional studies of the mechanisms underlying the fascinating biology of the female sexual development and egg production of S. japonicum, which may accelerate the development of new strategies targeting schistosome egg production. To explore the effects of crushing processes on the rheological properties and edible quality of minced meat, blunt cutting tool and sharp cutting tool on two devices of beating machine and chopping machine were used to prepare minced meat. The pH value, salt soluble protein content, protein secondary structure, particle size distribution, color, stability and cooking loss, water holding capacity, texture characteristics and microstructure of minced meat gel were investigated. The results showed that the four crushing processes had different degrees of muscle fiber fragmentation, resulting in different properties of the low-fat minced meat and the resulting gel. Compared with the beater, the low-fat minced meat treated by the chopper had a higher G′ value in the temperature scanning. The low-fat minced meat beaten with blunt knife had the lowest viscosity and showed poor stability in frequency scanning. The high intensity cutting action of the chopper resulted in a lower end temperature and smaller particle size of the broken low-fat minced meat, and higher water holding capacity of the low-fat minced meat gel. Compared with the other three processes, the blunt knife chopped low-fat minced meat had the highest redness value (15.95), pH value (6.66), salt-soluble protein content (77.05 mg/mL), relative content of β-fold (43.71%), and the low-fat minced meat gel had the lowest cooking loss (17.48%), the highest hardness (4147.72 g), gumminess (2883.72), chewiness (2496.02 g), sensory scores, which may be attributed to the tighter microstructure of low-fat minced meat gel formed by this treatment with moderate muscle fragmentation. Therefore, the blunt chopping is suitable for the crushing production of low-fat minced meat, which can improve its salt-soluble protein content, relative content of β-sheet, redness, water holding capacity and texture properties.

Stem cells offer new therapeutic avenues for the repair and replacement of damaged tissues and organs owing to their self-renewal and multipotent differentiation capabilities. In this paper, we conduct a systematic review of the characteristics of various types of stem cells and offer insights into their potential applications in both cellular and cell-free therapies. In addition, we provide a comprehensive summary of the technical routes of stem cell therapy and discuss in detail current challenges, including safety issues and differentiation control. Although some issues remain, stem cell therapy demonstrates excellent potential in the field of regenerative medicine and provides novel tactics and methodologies for managing a wider spectrum of illnesses and traumas.

Schistosomes are flatworm parasites that undergo a complex life cycle involving two hosts. The regulation of the parasite's developmental processes relies on both coding RNAs and non-coding RNAs. However, the roles of non-coding RNAs, including long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) in schistosomes remain largely unexplored. Here we conduct advanced RNA sequencing on male and female S. japonicum during their pairing and reproductive development, resulting in the identification of nearly 8,000 lncRNAs. This extensive dataset enables us to construct a comprehensive co-expression network of lncRNAs and mRNAs, shedding light on their interactions during the crucial reproductive stages within the mammalian host. Importantly, we have also revealed a specific lncRNA, LNC3385, which appears to play a critical role in the survival and reproduction of the parasite. These findings not only enhance our understanding of the dynamic nature of lncRNAs during the reproductive phase of schistosomes but also highlight LNC3385 as a potential therapeutic target for combating schistosomiasis.

Background. In order to prevent the recurrence and progression of intermediate- and high-risk non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) after transurethral resection of bladder tumor (TURBT), various bladder instillation therapies have been developed in recent years. Among these, device-assisted Hyperthermic Intravesical Chemotherapy (HIVEC) has received a great deal of attention. Objective. To identify the efficacy and safety of HIVEC, we conducted this meta-analysis. Methods. We identified relevant articles from PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases. All published randomized controlled trials (RCTs) describing the role of bladder instillation for the treatment of intermediate- and high-risk NMIBC were involved. Outcomes included 1–3 years Recurrence-Free Survival (RFS), 1–3 years Progression-Free Survival (PFS), 5 years Overall Survival (OS), Adverse Events (AEs), and relevant subgroup analyses. Result. Our study involved a total of 10 RCTs and 1360 patients. In subgroup analysis, we found that compared to MMC instillation, HIVEC decreased the 1–3 years RFS (OR = 0.51; p=0.009) while not increasing the incidence of AEs (OR = 0.86; p=0.30). Compared with BCG instillation, HIVEC reduced the incidence of serious AEs (OR = 0.21; p=0.04) while bringing the same efficacy (OR = 0.78; p=0.63). Conclusion. HIVEC combined the advantages of efficacy and safety compared with the two recommended instillation modalities. As a potential alternative therapy, its widespread clinical effect remains to be further evaluated.

With the increasing awareness of food safety among consumers, the visual judgment of food quality through packaging color change has become a new demand, therefore, smart packaging has become a common concern of academia and industry in recent years. pH-sensitive materials mixed with different polymers to obtain food packaging films that display different colors under different pH conditions have the real-time monitoring of the freshness of meat, shrimp, milk and other foods effect. This paper introduces two major pH-sensitive indicators, chemical chromophores and natural pigment chromophores, and classifies the color change mechanism of natural food pigments such as anthocyanin, curcumin, alizarin, cometin and betaine at different pH values, and summarizes the research progress, application status and research trends of pH-sensitive materials modified by blending with different polymers in the field of food packaging, in order to prepare a good performance, green and environmentally friendly. It provides a reference for the preparation of good performance and green food packaging.

Abstract Pulsed electrochemical micromachining accuracy predominantly depends on pulse duration. To obtain high accuracy, an expensive power source with ultra-short pulse duration is needed. An electrochemical micromachining method based on double feedback circuits is proposed in this work to achieve this aim. A positive feedback circuit plus a negative feedback circuit is used in the circuit of the pulsed electrochemical micromachining. Thus, the gains of the feedback circuits can control the pulse duration of the machining system. Experiments show that the machining resolution can be improved notably by an increase in the feedback gains. Using the method, one micro double cure beam is produced, and its accuracy gets to nanometer level under the condition of using an ordinary pulse duration power source.

Testicular fibrous pseudotumor is a rare benign disease that is often misdiagnosed as testicular malignancy before surgery. We present a case of a 38-year-old male who had painless palpable masses in the left scrotum. Testicular tumor marker levels were within normal limits, and ultrasound revealed paratesticular masses. Intraoperative rapid diagnosis indicated a fibrous pseudotumor without malignancy. We successfully removed all the masses, along with the testis and a portion of the spermatic cord sheath, avoiding unnecessary orchiectomy.

Sensorineural hearing loss is typically caused by damage to the cochlear hair cells (HCs) due to external stimuli or because of one’s genetic factors and the inability to convert sound mechanical energy into nerve impulses. Adult mammalian cochlear HCs cannot regenerate spontaneously; therefore, this type of deafness is usually considered irreversible. Studies on the developmental mechanisms of HC differentiation have revealed that nonsensory cells in the cochlea acquire the ability to differentiate into HCs after the overexpression of specific genes, such as Atoh1, which makes HC regeneration possible. Gene therapy, through in vitro selection and editing of target genes, transforms exogenous gene fragments into target cells and alters the expression of genes in target cells to activate the corresponding differentiation developmental program in target cells. This review summarizes the genes that have been associated with the growth and development of cochlear HCs in recent years and provides an overview of gene therapy approaches in the field of HC regeneration. It concludes with a discussion of the limitations of the current therapeutic approaches to facilitate the early implementation of this therapy in a clinical setting.

Objective: This study aims to examine the significance of utilizing three-dimensional (3D) image reconstruction technique in preoperative communication prior to partial nephrectomy (PN) and its impact on postoperative follow-up. Methods: A retrospective study was performed with 158 renal cancer patients treated with PN at our center from May 1, 2017 to April 30, 2019. 81 patients (group A) had preoperative communication using the 3D reconstruction technique, while 77 patients (group B) did not. The surgeon explained the anatomical structure, tumor characteristics, and surgical approach in detail to the two groups of patients. Each patient completed a questionnaire. The loss to follow-up rate over a 3-year period was counted for both groups, and non-cancer-related serious complications such as renal failure and cardio-cerebrovascular disease were observed. This research did not include patients who returned for follow-up care owing to associated complications such as postoperative chronic kidney disease. Comparisons between two groups were performed using the Mann–Whitney U test and chi-square test. Results: All patients showed no statistically significant differences in basic clinical parameters, such as age, gender, body mass index, tumor size, and R.E.N.A.L. score (P ​> ​0.05). In group A, patients were significantly more likely to experience understanding of renal anatomy (P ​= ​0.001), characteristics of renal cell carcinoma (P ​= ​0.003), surgical approach (P ​= ​0.007), and relief of preoperative anxiety (P ​= ​0.013). The follow-up adherence at 3 years postoperatively in group A and group B was 21 cases and 10 cases, respectively (P ​= ​0.041). In addition, glomerular filtration rate < 60 ​mL/min/1.73 ​m2 or serum creatinine > 186 ​μmol/L at 3 years after surgery occurred in 5 patients in group A and 13 in group B (P ​= ​0.034), and a systolic blood pressure rise greater than 20 ​mmHg occurred in 9 patients in group A and 18 in group B (P ​= ​0.041). Conclusions: The findings of this study suggest that the integration of 3D reconstruction techniques in preoperative communication effectively enhances patients’ understanding and perception of kidney tumors and PN. Moreover, the utilization of these techniques can contribute to the prevention of significant non-cancer-related complications during the postoperative phase.

Abstract Background This study aims to explore the efficacy and safety of mirabegron in treating irritative symptoms induced by intravesical immunotherapy with Bacillus Calmette–Guerin (BCG) after transurethral resection of bladder tumors (TURBT). Methods A total of 160 patients subjected to TURBT was randomly divided into the mirabegron group and placebo group with 80 patients in each group. Then, the patients were administered 25 mg mirabegron or placebo daily, starting the first day after BCG infusion. The first BCG perfusion was conducted at least 2 weeks after TURBT. The 3‐day bladder diaries were completed in all patients, 1 day before BCG perfusion, and on the 1st, 6th, and 13th days after the first BCG perfusion. Overactive bladder symptom scores were completed 1 day before BCG perfusion, and on the 6th and 13th days after the first BCG perfusion. Schistosomiasis is a zoonotic parasitic disease caused by schistosome infection that severely threatens human health. Therapy relies mainly on single drug treatment with praziquantel. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop alternative medicines. The glutamate neurotransmitter in helminths is involved in many physiological functions by interacting with various cell-surface receptors. However, the roles and detailed regulatory mechanisms of the metabotropic glutamate receptor (mGluR) in the growth and development of Schistosoma japonicum remain poorly understood. In this study, we identified two putative mGluRs in S. japonicum and named them SjGRM7 (Sjc_001309, similar to GRM7) and SjGRM (Sjc_001163, similar to mGluR). Further validation using a calcium mobilization assay showed that SjGRM7 and SjGRM are glutamate-specific. The results of in situ hybridization showed that SjGRM is mainly located in the nerves of both males and gonads of females, and SjGRM7 is principally found in the nerves and gonads of males and females. In a RNA interference experiment, the results showed that SjGRM7 knockdown by double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) in S. japonicum caused edema, chassis detachment, and separation of paired worms in vitro. Furthermore, dsRNA interference of SjGRM7 could significantly affect the development and egg production of male and female worms in vivo and alleviate the host liver granulomas and fibrosis. Finally, we examined the molecular mechanisms underlying the regulatory function of mGluR using RNA sequencing. The data suggest that SjGRM7 propagates its signals through the G protein-coupled receptor signaling pathway to promote nervous system development in S. japonicum. In conclusion, SjGRM7 is a potential target for anti-schistosomiasis. This study enables future research on the mechanisms of action of Schistosomiasis japonica drugs.

Biochar is considered as a universal conditioner to improve soil quality, but its effects of different addition rates on soil properties, bacterial community structure and plant growth are still unclear, particularly in the typical acid purple soil in the southwest of China. In this study, 110 days of rape growth pot experiment under the application rate of 0.0% rice husk biochar (CK), 0.8% (CT1), 2.0% (CT2) and 4.0% (CT3) to the acid purple soil. Results showed that all biochar additions improved soil pH, soil organic carbon (SOC), total phosphorus, available phosphorus, available potassium concentrations in the acid purple soil. The activity of both invertase and catalase, not urease, was significantly increased with the increasing of biochar addition rates. The 16s-gene sequencing results showed that the Chao1 index was increased only under CT3, and the Shannon index was increased after all biochar applications. Furthermore, biochar increased the relative abundance of bacteria that play important roles in soil carbon and nitrogen cycles, SOC decomposition, plant diseases control and growth. The plant height and biomass production of rapes were increased under the low biochar level (CT1), but not under the higher rates of CT2 and CT3. These results demonstrated that biochar, as a soil conditioner to the acid purple soil, could increase soil pH value, SOC, available phosphorus and potassium and affect carbon and nitrogen cycles related to bacterial communities for promoting plant performance under low application rate.

In wafer fabrication, it is imperative to minimize the transient process of cluster tools for the sake of on-demand and preventive maintenance. Due to the trend of multi-type and small-batch production, transient processes appear more and more frequently. Thus, the optimization problems of transient processes have gained increasing attention from both industry and academia. The requirement for wafer revisiting tend to complicate this problem significantly. However, only a few studies take such a challenge for cluster tools with wafer revisiting. This paper focuses on the schedule optimization of transient processes for dual-arm cluster tools with wafer revisiting. To accelerate transient processes, including both start-up and close-down ones, we adopt a program evaluation and review technique to analyze and harness a cluster tool’s state evolution. We then propose computationally efficient algorithms to speed up transient processes. Finally, we provide illustrative examples to show their applications and validate their effectiveness.

Summary: The evolution and adaptation of S. japonicum, a zoonotic parasite that causes human schistosomiasis, remain unclear because of the lack of whole-genome data. We construct a chromosome-level S. japonicum genome and analyze it together with 72 samples representing six populations of the entire endemic region. We observe a Taiwan zoophilic lineage splitting from zoonotic populations ∼45,000 years ago, consistent with the divergent history of their intermediate hosts. Interestingly, we detect a severe population bottleneck in S. japonicum, largely coinciding with human history in Asia during the last glacial maximum. We identify several genomic regions underlying natural selection, including GATAD2A and Lmln, both showing remarkable differentiation among different areas. RNAi knockdown suggests association of GATAD2A with parasite development and infection in definitive hosts, while Lmln relates to the specificity of the intermediate hosts. Our study provides insights into the evolution of S. japonicum and serves as a resource for further studies.

Schistosoma japonicum is prevalent in Asia with a wide mammalian host range, which leads to highly harmful zoonotic parasitic diseases. Most previous transcriptomic studies have been performed on this parasite, but mainly focus on stages inside the mammalian host. Moreover, few larval transcriptomic data are available in public databases. Here we mapped the detailed transcriptome profiles of four S. japonicum larval stages including eggs, miracidia, sporocysts and cercariae, providing a comprehensive development picture outside of the mammalian host. By analyzing the stage-specific/enriched genes, we identified functional genes associated with the biological characteristic at each stage: e.g. we observed enrichment of genes necessary for DNA replication only in sporocysts, while those involved in proteolysis were upregulated in sporocysts and/or cercariae. This data indicated that miracidia might use leishmanolysin and neprilysin to penetrate the snail, while elastase (SjCE2b) and leishmanolysin might contribute to the cercariae invasion. The expression profile of stem cell markers revealed potential germinal cell conversion during larval development. Additionally, our analysis indicated that tandem duplications had driven the expansion of the papain family in S. japonicum. Notably, all the duplicated cathepsin B-like proteases were highly expressed in cercariae. Utilizing our 3rd version of S. japonicum genome, we further characterized the alternative splicing profiles throughout these four stages. Taken together, the present study provides compressive gene expression profiles of S. japonicum larval stages and identifies a set of genes that might be involved in intermediate and definitive host invasion.

For the problem of traditional passive radar target detection, the cross-correlation method is a popular solution. By processing the reference signal and the target echo signal coherently, the method is able to extract the target parameters, such as distance, velocity, and azimuth. However, the estimation performance is limited by the low signal-to-noise ratio. Therefore, a new cross-correlation algorithm for passive radar target detection is proposed in this paper. The echo signal received by the echo antenna and the reference signal received by the reference antenna are processed by differential operations to transform the single signal into multiple signals. Then, the differential reference signal is used to eliminate the signal phase in the differential echo signal. With the two-dimensional Fourier transform, the coherent accumulation of multiple signals is realized based on matched filtering of the single signal. This makes the secondary accumulation of the target signal coherent, while the interference part can only obtain incoherent secondary accumulation. In this way, the signal-to-noise ratio for target detection can be greatly improved. The paper presents the theoretical derivation of the algorithm and the quantitative analysis of its performance. The results of both simulated and measured data show that the detection performance is greatly improved compared with the traditional method.

In order to solve the problem when the target detection of passive bistatic radar is seriously affected by direct signal and multi-path, a clutter cancellation algorithm based on frequency domain analysis is proposed in this paper. By analyzing and processing the frequency domain correlation between the reference signal and the echo signal, the time delay and the amplitude of the direct signal and multipath in the echo signal can be estimated for clutter cancellation. This method can not only reduce the computation greatly, but also eliminate the influence of clutter echo residue on target detection. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is verified by simulation and real data processing.

Abstract Background To evaluate the role of three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction technique in renal function protection and ipsilateral parenchymal mass preserved after laparoscopic partial nephrectomy (LPN) in patients with complex renal tumor (R.E.N.A.L.score ≥ 8). Methods A retrospective study enrolling 49 patients who suffered from RCC and underwent LPN at our center, from October 1, 2017, to October 31, 2018. Twenty-one patients (group A) underwent LPN with the 3D reconstruction technique before surgery, and the other 28 patients (group B) not. Preoperative and postoperative ipsilateral parenchymal mass volume and ipsilateral glomerular filtration rate (GFR) were analyzed 3–5 days prior and 3 months after PN. In order to compare the two groups, Mann-Whitney U test and chi-square tests were performed. The main limitation of this technique is that the volume calculations are partly performed manually. Results All patients’ median renal score was 10 with no difference between the two groups (P = 0.89), and the median tumor size of the two groups was 3.2 cm (group A) and 3.3 cm (group B) respectively (P = 0.14). In addition, the median warm ischemia time of the two groups was 21 min (group A) and 26 min (group B) (P = 0.003). In group A and group B, the rate of preserved global GFR was 88% and 86% (P = 0.06), preserved ipsilateral GFR was 80% and 77% (P = 0.01), and preserved ipsilateral parenchymal was 84% and 80% (P = 0.03) separately. Conclusion 3D reconstruction technique was a beneficial method for more renal function and more preserved renal parenchymal mass volume after LPN. Background: Erectile dysfunction (ED) is highly prevalent in aging men. Tadalafil daily and on-demand are widely used for the treatment of ED. Aim: We performed a meta-analysis to evaluate the efficacy and safety of tadalafil daily compared with tadalafil on-demand in treating men with ED after at least 24 weeks of long-term treatment. Methods: Randomized controlled trials of tadalafil daily vs on-demand in treating men with ED were searched using MEDLINE, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Controlled Trials Register. Systematic review was carried out using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses. The data was calculated by RevMan version 5.3.0. The references of related articles were also searched. Outcomes: International Index of Erectile Function-Erectile Function domain, sexual encounter profile question 2 (SEP2), SEP question 3 (SEP3), any treatment-emergent adverse event (AE), discontinuation due to AEs, myalgia, back pain, headache, dyspepsia, and nasopharyngitis. Results: 4 articles, including 1,035 participants were studied. The analysis found that tadalafil daily had a greater improvement than tadalafil on-demand in terms of International Index of Erectile Function-Erectile Function (mean difference (MD) 1.24; 95% CI 0.03−2.44; P = .04), SEP2 (MD 10.08; 95% CI 9.15−11.01; P < .00001) and SEP3 (MD 8.19; 95% CI 2.09−14.29; P = .009) in treating ED after at least 24 weeks treatment cycle. For safety, tadalafil on-demand had a higher incidence of any treatment-emergent AE (odds ratio 0.73; 95% CI 0.56−0.96; P = .02) compared with tadalafil daily, but for other aspects, including discontinuation due to AEs, myalgia, back pain, headache, dyspepsia, and nasopharyngitis, there were no significant difference between the 2 treatments. Clinical Implications: Tadalafil daily may offer a better effect for ED than on-demand for long-term treatment. Strengths and Limitations: From the perspective of evidence-based medicine, we evaluated the efficacy and safety of tadalafil daily compared with tadalafil on-demand in treating men with ED after a long-term treatment. The quality of these studies included is flawed, primarily in difference in tadalafil doses and severity of the ED. Conclusion: Tadalafil daily provides a preferable therapeutic effect for ED with a lower incidence of treatment-emergent side effects relative to tadalafil on-demand after at least 24 weeks of long-term treatment.Zhou Z, Chen H, Wu J, et al.
