Abstract Polymer gels have been widely used in flexible electronics, soft machines and impact protection materials. Conventional gels usually suffer from the inherent conflict between stiffness and toughness, severely hampering their applications. This work proposes a facile yet versatile strategy to break through this trade-off via the synergistic effect of crystal-domain cross-linking and chelation cross-linking, without the need for specific structure design or adding other reinforcements. Both effects are proven to boost the mechanical performance of the originally weak gel, and result in a stiff and tough conductive gel, achieving significant enhancements in elastic modulus and toughness by up to 366-, and 104-folds, respectively. The resultant gel achieves coordinatively enhanced stiffness (110.26 MPa) and toughness (219.93 MJ m−3), reconciling the challenging trade-off between them. In addition, the presented strategy is found generalizable to a variety of metal ions and polymers, offering a promising way to expand the applicability of gels.

Soil datasets, including soil sample data and soil map products, often contain outliers that can lead to inaccurate modeling and analysis of various soil-related issues. Existing methods for identifying potential outliers in soil datasets rely on simple statistical approaches and tend to overlook the geographical characteristics of the soil. Local indicators of spatial association (LISA) can address this limitation by examining the local spatial structures inherent in soil data. However, distinguishing some outliers remains challenging because of the varying levels of heterogeneity across different soil regions. In this paper, we present a novel method for recognizing potential outliers through local heterogeneity enhancement, which is aimed at improving the quality of soil datasets. In this method, stratified soil variations are first balanced to mitigate the effects of spatial discrepancies in different soil regions. Second, local heterogeneity enhancement is conducted to modify the outlier scores associated with abnormal soils exhibiting low heterogeneity. Third, a frequency histogram of outlier scores is applied to determine a suitable threshold at which to recognize potential abnormal values in soil datasets. To validate the proposed method, it was compared with the LISA and box-plot methods. Simulation data and soil data were adopted in the experiment, incorporating two types of irregular points and spatially continuous surfaces. The comparative experiments demonstrated that the proposed method more effectively identifies potential outliers by analyzing and balancing the local spatial structure of the soil than traditional methods do. It can be concluded that local heterogeneity enhancement is beneficial for recognizing potential outliers in soil datasets.

Abstract Novel neoadjuvant immunotherapy combined with chemotherapy (neoICT) has improved outcomes for patients with esophageal squamous-cell carcinoma (ESCC), but challenges persist in low response rates and therapy resistance. Little is known about the intra-tumoral heterogeneity in the ESCC tumor microenvironment (TME) that underlies differential responses to neoadjuvant therapy. We applied single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) profiling and multiplexed immunofluorescence staining to thoroughly decipher the TME in ESCC specimens from a neoadjuvant anti-PD1 combination therapy clinical trial. The cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) population showed the significant alteration in abundance following neoadjuvant therapy. Specifically, IL6 + CCL2 + immunomodulatory CAFs and a novel CD248 + mechanoresponsive CAFs subset exhibited increasing infiltration. Mechanistically, CD248 + mechanoresponsive CAFs approached and lined the tumor nest to physically block the infiltration of CD8 + T cells and drug delivery, while IL6 + CCL2 + immunomodulatory CAFs induced therapeutic resistance with distinct IL-6 expression. Among patients treated with neoICT, we observed prominent CAF-T cell interactions. In particular, the NECTIN2-TIGIT ligand-receptor pair was enriched in treated samples, and TIGIT was identified as the major inhibitory checkpoint of T cells. Our findings demonstrate distinct alterations in TME constituent responses to neoadjuvant immunotherapy and identify functional phenotypes of CAFs associated with unfavorable therapeutic responses in patients. This provides potential targets to enhance responses to neoadjuvant therapy in ESCC.

With the standardization of NIST post-quantum cryptographic (PQC) schemes, optimizing these PQC schemes across various platforms presents significant research value. While most existing software implementation efforts have concentrated on ARM platforms, research on PQC implementations utilizing various RISC-V instruction set architectures (ISAs) remains limited. In light of this gap, this paper proposes comprehensive and efficient optimizations of Keccak, Kyber, and Dilithium on RV{32,64}IM{B}{V}. We thoroughly optimize these implementations for dual-issue CPUs, believing that our work on various RISC-V ISAs will provide valuable insights for future PQC deployments. Specifically, for Keccak, we revisit a range of optimization techniques, including bit interleaving, lane complementing, in-place processing, and hybrid vector/scalar implementations. We construct an optimal combination of methods aimed at achieving peak performance on dual-issue CPUs for various RISC-V ISAs. For the NTT implementations of Kyber and Dilithium, we deliver optimized solutions based on Plantard and Montgomery arithmetic for diverse RISC-V ISAs, incorporating extensive dual-issue enhancements. Additionally, we improve the signed Plantard multiplication algorithm proposed by Akoi et al. Ultimately, our testing demonstrates that our implementations of Keccak and NTT across various ISAs achieve new performance records. More importantly, they significantly enrich the PQC software ecosystem for RISC-V.

Abstract Background The efficacy of neoadjuvant chemo-immunotherapy (NAT) in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is challenged by the intricate interplay within the tumor microenvironment (TME). Unveiling the immune landscape of ESCC in the context of NAT could shed light on heterogeneity and optimize therapeutic strategies for patients. Methods We analyzed single cells from 22 baseline and 24 post-NAT treatment samples of stage II/III ESCC patients to explore the association between the immune landscape and pathological response to neoadjuvant anti-PD-1 combination therapy, including pathological complete response (pCR), major pathological response (MPR), and incomplete pathological response (IPR). Results Single-cell profiling identified 14 major cell subsets of cancer, immune, and stromal cells. Trajectory analysis unveiled an interesting link between cancer cell differentiation and pathological response to NAT. ESCC tumors enriched with less differentiated cancer cells exhibited a potentially favorable pathological response to NAT, while tumors enriched with clusters of more differentiated cancer cells may resist treatment. Deconvolution of transcriptomes in pre-treatment tumors identified gene signatures in response to NAT contributed by specific immune cell populations. Upregulated genes associated with better pathological responses in CD8 + effector T cells primarily involved interferon-gamma (IFNγ) signaling, neutrophil degranulation, and negative regulation of the T cell apoptotic process, whereas downregulated genes were dominated by those in the immune response-activating cell surface receptor signaling pathway. Natural killer cells in pre-treatment tumors from pCR patients showed a similar upregulation of gene expression in response to IFNγ but a downregulation of genes in the neutrophil-mediated immunity pathways. A decreased cellular contexture of regulatory T cells in ESCC TME indicated a potentially favorable pathological response to NAT. Cell–cell communication analysis revealed extensive interactions between CCL5 and its receptor CCR5 in various immune cells of baseline pCR tumors. Immune checkpoint interaction pairs, including CTLA4-CD86, TIGIT-PVR, LGALS9-HAVCR2, and TNFSF4-TNFRSF4, might serve as additional therapeutic targets for ICI therapy in ESCC. Conclusions This pioneering study unveiled an intriguing association between cancer cell differentiation and pathological response in esophageal cancer patients, revealing distinct subgroups of tumors for which neoadjuvant chemo-immunotherapy might be effective. We also delineated the immune landscape of ESCC tumors in the context of clinical response to NAT, which provides clinical insights for better understanding how patients respond to the treatment and further identifying novel therapeutic targets for ESCC patients in the future.

In change detection tasks, seasonal variations in spectral characteristics and surface cover can negatively impact performance when comparing image pairs from different seasons. Many existing change detection methods do not specifically address the performance degradation caused by seasonal errors. To tackle this issue, the Dual-Branch Seasonal Error Elimination Change Detection Framework using Target Image Feature Fusion Generator (DBSEE-CDF) is introduced. Specifically, the approach utilizes the Target Image Feature Fusion Generator (TIFFG), which incorporates spatial and channel attention mechanisms to extract features from target images and integrates them with deep features from input images using cross-attention. To avoid a severe loss of visual fidelity caused by the significant differences in texture and color features between snow-covered and snow-free images, as well as the different requirements for style transformation, different generators for snow-covered winter images and snow-free winter images are employed to produce intermediate images that eliminate seasonal errors before conducting change detection tasks. The experimental results demonstrate significant improvements in both quantitative and qualitative assessments of change detection tasks compared to directly performing change detection with various models, highlighting the effectiveness of the proposed DBSEE-CDF.

This paper presents an automated method for solving the initial structure of compact, high-zoom-ratio mid-wave infrared (MWIR) zoom lenses. Using differential analysis, the focal length variation process of zoom lenses under paraxial conditions is investigated, and a model for the focal power distribution and relative motion of three movable lens groups is established. The particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm is introduced into the zooming process analysis, and a program is developed in MATLAB to solve for the initial structure. This algorithm integrates physical constraints from lens analysis and evaluates candidate solutions based on key design parameters, such as total lens length, zoom ratio, Petzval field curvature, and focal length at tele end. The results demonstrate that the proposed method can efficiently and accurately determine the initial structure of compact MWIR zoom lenses. Using this method, a mid-wave infrared zoom lens with a zoom ratio of 50×, a total length of less than 530 mm, and the ratio of focal length to total length approximately 2:1 was successfully designed. The design validates the effectiveness and practicality of this method in solving the initial structure of zoom lenses that meet complex design requirements.

Introduction: Esophageal cancer is increasingly recognized as a significant global malignancy. The main pathological subtype of this cancer is esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC), which displays a higher degree of malignancy and a poorer prognosis. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) play a critical role in modulating the immune response to tumors, and understanding the regulation of ROS in ESCC could lead to novel and improved therapeutic strategies for ESCC patients. Methods: A consensus matrix derived from genes involved in the ROS pathway revealed two subtypes of ROS. These subtypes were categorized as ROS-active or ROS-suppressive based on their level of ROS activity. The heterogeneity among the different ROS subtypes was then explored from various perspectives, including gene function, immune response, genomic stability, and immunotherapy. In order to assess the prognosis and the potential benefits of immunotherapy, a ROS activity score (RAS) was developed using the identified ROS subtypes. In vitro experiments were performed to confirm the impact of core RAS genes on the proliferative activity of esophageal cancer cell lines. Results: Two distinctive subtypes of ROS were identified. The first subtype, referred to as ROS-active, exhibited elevated ROS activity, enhanced involvement in cancer-associated immune pathways, and increased infiltration of effector immune cells. The second subtype, named ROS-suppressive, demonstrated weaker ROS activity but displayed more pronounced dysregulation in the cell cycle and a denser extracellular matrix, indicating malignant characteristics. Genomic stability, particularly in terms of copy number variation (CNV) events, differed between the two ROS subtypes. By developing a RAS model, reliable risk assessment for overall survival (OS) in patients with ESCC was achieved, and the model demonstrated strong predictive capabilities in real-world immunotherapy cohorts. Moreover, the core gene LDLRAD1 within the RAS model was found to enhance proliferative activity in esophageal cancer cell lines. Conclusion: Based on the ROS pathway, we successfully identified two distinct subtypes in ESCC: the ROS-active subtype and the ROS-suppressive subtype. These subtypes were utilized to evaluate prognosis and the sensitivity to immunotherapy.

Abstract Audiovisual difficulty are especially common in older adults. Audiovisual difficulty seriously affect the quality of life of older adults in their later years. It is a top priority to find out the related factors, and to intervene and prevent them. The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between recreational physical activities and audiovisual difficulty in older adults. We hope that older adults can reduce the risk of hearing and visual difficulty through scientific physical activity. A total of 4,886 people were sampled from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2013 to 2018. Recreational physical activity was assessed through the Global Physical Activity Questionnaire (GPAQ); Hearing and visual difficulty were assessed using the Disability Questionnaire (DLQ). Due to the significance of carbon utilization and storage, CO2 huff and puff is increasingly receiving attention. However, the mechanisms and effects of CO2 huff and puff extraction in medium to deep saturated heavy oil reservoirs remain unclear. Therefore, in this study, by targeting the medium to deep saturated heavy oil reservoirs in the block Xia of the Xinjiang oil field, measurements of physical properties were conducted through PVT analysis and viscosity measurement to explore the dissolution and diffusion characteristics of CO2-degassed and CO2-saturated oil systems. Multiple sets of physical simulation of CO2 huff and puff in medium to deep saturated heavy oil reservoirs were conducted using a one-dimensional core holder to evaluate the EOR mechanism of CO2 huff and puff. The results demonstrate that the solubility of CO2 in degassed crude oil is linearly correlated with pressure. Higher pressure effectively increases the solubility of CO2, reaching 49.1 m3/m3 at a saturation pressure of 10.0 MPa, thus facilitating oil expansion and viscosity reduction. Meanwhile, crude oil saturated with CH4 still retains the capacity to further dissolve additional CO2, reaching 24.5 m3/m3 of incremental CO2 solubilization at 10.0 MPa, and the hybrid effect of CO2 and CH4 reduces oil viscosity to 1161 mPa·s, which is slightly lower than the pure CO2 dissolution case. Temperature increases suppress solubility but promote molecular diffusion, allowing CH4 and CO2 to maintain a certain solubility at high temperatures. In terms of dynamic dissolution and diffusion, the initial CO2 dissolution rate is high, reaching 0.009 m3/(m3·min), the mid-term dissolution rate stabilizes at approximately 0.002 m3/(m3·min), and the dissolution capability significantly decreases later on. CO2 exhibits high molecular diffusion capability in gas-saturated crude oil, with a diffusion coefficient of 8.62 × 10−7 m2/s. For CO2 huff and puff, oil production is positively correlated with the CO2 injection rate and the cycle injection volume; it initially increases with the extension of the soak time but eventually decreases. Therefore, the optimal injection speed, injection volume, and soak time should be determined in conjunction with reservoir characteristics. During the huff and puff process, the bottom hole pressure should be higher than the bubble point pressure of the crude oil to prevent gas escape. Moreover, as the huff and puff cycles increase, the content of saturates in the oil rises, while those of aromatic, resin, and asphaltene decrease, leading to a gradual deterioration of the huff and puff effect. This study provides a comprehensive reference method and conclusions for studying the fluid property changes and enhanced recovery mechanisms in medium to deep heavy oil reservoirs with CO2 huff and puff.

Abstract Background Smoking is harmful, which has become a major public health burden. Physical activity may be related to smoking. Physical activity is one of the current methods for smoking control and smoking cessation. Different types of physical activity may have different effect on smoking behavior. Objective The purpose of this study was to identify the direction and extent of the impact of different types of physical activity above moderate intensity (including work physical activity, recreational physical activity, commuter physical activity and sedentary behavior) on smoking behavior. Materials and methods In this study, a total of 2,015 individuals (1,233 males and 782 females, mean age 54.02±17.31 years) was selected from the representative population aged 20 and above in the National Health and Nutrition Survey of the United States from 2017 to 2018. Physical activity was assessed using the Global Physical Activity Questionnaire (GPAQ) ; the tobacco use questionnaire (SMQ) was used to determine whether the sample had smoking behavior at this stage. Binary Logistic regression analysis was performed with various physical activities as independent variables and smoking behavior as dependent variables. All data were analyzed through Statistical Product and Service Solutions (SPSS) 26.0. Results After adjusted for all confounding variables, physical activity at work was close to significantly associated with smoking behavior (P=0.053), odds ratio (OR) =1.135 (95%Cl: 0.999-1.289). Recreational physical activity was significantly associated with smoking behavior (P < 0.001), OR=0.729 (95%Cl: 0.639-0.832). Commuting physical activity was significantly associated with smoking behavior (P < 0.001), OR=1.214 (95%Cl:1.048-1.405). Sedentary behavior was significantly associated with smoking behavior (P < 0.001), OR=1.363 (95%Cl: 1.154-1.611). Conclusions Given that different types of physical activity have different associations with smoking behavior. Therefore, when physical activity is used as a tobacco control measurement, it is necessary to pay attention to the type and environment of physical activity. Recreational physical activities should be appropriately increased, sedentary behavior should be reduced, and smoking prohibit environment should be expanded as far as possible to achieve better clinical intervention effects.

Abstract Aqueous zinc batteries are ideal candidates for grid-scale energy storage because of their safety and low-cost aspects. However, the production of large-format aqueous Zn batteries is hindered by electrolyte consumption, hydrogen gas evolution and accumulation, and Zn dendrites growth. To circumvent these issues, here we propose an “open” pouch cell design for large-format production of aqueous Zn batteries, which can release hydrogen gas and allow the refilling of the electrolyte components consumed during cell cycling. The cell uses a gel electrolyte containing crosslinked kappa (k)-carrageenan and chitosan. It bonds water molecules and hinders their side reaction with Zn, preventing electrolyte leakage and fast evaporation. As a proof-of-concept, we report the assembly and testing of a Zn | |ZnxV2O5·nH2O multi-layer “open” pouch cell using the carrageenan/chitosan gel electrolyte, which delivers an initial discharge capacity of 0.9 Ah and 84% capacity retention after 200 cycles at 200 mA g‒1, 370 kPa and 25 °C.

Abstract Background Depression is an important public health burden, its risk of occurrence is associated with vitamin D deficiency and may also increase with age, while serum vitamin D levels are closely related to age. Objective The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether vitamin D and age are associated with depression after adjustment for each other. Materials and methods We extracted data from NHANES 2013–2018, including demographic characteristics, depression level, vitamin D level, physical activity, and body measures. A total of 15,156 adults aged 20 years or older (mean age 49.81 ± 17.67 years, 7301 males and 7855 females) were included. Depression was screened by PHQ-9. Keccak is widely used in lattice-based cryptography (LBC) and its impact to the overall running time in LBC scheme can be predominant on platforms lacking dedicated SHA-3 instructions. This holds true on embedded devices for Kyber and Dilithium, two LBC schemes selected by NIST to be standardized as quantumsafe cryptographic algorithms. While extensive work has been done to optimize the polynomial arithmetic in these schemes, it was generally assumed that Keccak implementations were already optimal and left little room for enhancement. In this paper, we revisit various optimization techniques for both Keccak and Dilithium on two ARMv7-M processors, i.e., Cortex-M3 and M4. For Keccak, we improve its efficiency using two architecture-specific optimizations, namely lazy rotation and memory access pipelining, on ARMv7-M processors. These optimizations yield performance gains of up to 24.78% and 21.4% for the largest Keccak permutation instance on Cortex-M3 and M4, respectively. As for Dilithium, we first apply the multi-moduli NTT for the small polynomial multiplication cti on Cortex-M3. Then, we thoroughly integrate the efficient Plantard arithmetic to the 16-bit NTTs for computing the small polynomial multiplications csi and cti on Cortex-M3 and M4. We show that the multi-moduli NTT combined with the efficient Plantard arithmetic could obtain significant speed-ups for the small polynomial multiplications of Dilithium on Cortex-M3. Combining all the aforementioned optimizations for both Keccak and Dilithium, we obtain 15.44% ∼ 23.75% and 13.94% ∼ 15.52% speed-ups for Dilithium on Cortex-M3 and M4, respectively. Furthermore, we also demonstrate that the Keccak optimizations yield 13.35% to 15.00% speed-ups for Kyber, and our Keccak optimizations decrease the proportion of time spent on hashing in Dilithium and Kyber by 2.46% ∼ 5.03% on Cortex-M4.

IntroductionThe SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant has become the dominant SARS-CoV-2 variant and exhibits immune escape to current COVID-19 vaccines, the further boosting strategies are required.MethodsWe have conducted a non-randomized, open-label and parallel-controlled phase 4 trial to evaluate the magnitude and longevity of immune responses to booster vaccination with intramuscular adenovirus vectored vaccine (Ad5-nCoV), aerosolized Ad5-nCoV, a recombinant protein subunit vaccine (ZF2001) or homologous inactivated vaccine (CoronaVac) in those who received two doses of inactivated COVID-19 vaccines. ResultsThe aerosolized Ad5-nCoV induced the most robust and long-lasting neutralizing activity against Omicron variant and IFNg T-cell response among all the boosters, with a distinct mucosal immune response. SARS-CoV-2-specific mucosal IgA response was substantially generated in subjects boosted with the aerosolized Ad5-nCoV at day 14 post-vaccination. At month 6, participants boosted with the aerosolized Ad5-nCoV had remarkably higher median titer and seroconversion of the Omicron BA.4/5-specific neutralizing antibody than those who received other boosters. DiscussionOur findings suggest that aerosolized Ad5-nCoV may provide an efficient alternative in response to the spread of the Omicron BA.4/5 variant.Clinical trial registrationhttps://www.chictr.org.cn/showproj.html?proj=152729, identifier ChiCTR2200057278.

With the deteriorating environment and excessive consumption of primary energy, solar energy has become used in buildings worldwide for renewable energy. Due to the fluctuations of solar radiation, a solar photovoltaic (PV) power system is often combined with a storage battery to improve the stability of a building’s energy supply. In addition, the real-time energy consumption pattern of the residual houses fluctuates; a larger size for a PV and battery integrated system can offer more solar energy but also bring a higher equipment cost, and a smaller size for the integrated system may achieve an energy-saving effect. The traditional methods to size a PV and battery integrated system for a detached house are based on the experience method or the traversal algorithm. However, the experience method cannot consider the real-time fluctuating energy demand of a detached house, and the traversal algorithm costs too much computation time. Therefore, this study applies Nondominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm-II (NSGA-II) to size a PV and battery integrated system by optimizing total electricity cost and usage of the grid electricity simultaneously. By setting these two indicators as objectives separately, single-objective genetic algorithms (GAs) are also deployed to find the optimal size specifications of the PV and battery integrated system. The optimal solutions from NSGA-II and single-objective GAs are mutually verified, showing the high accuracy of NSGA-II, and the rapid convergence process demonstrates the time-saving effect of all these deployed genetic algorithms. The robustness of the deployed NSGA-II to various grid electricity prices is also tested, and similar optimal solutions are obtained. Compared with the experience method, the final optimal solution from NSGA-II saves 68.3% of total electricity cost with slightly more grid electricity used. Compared with the traversal algorithm, NSGA-II saves 94% of the computation time and provides more accurate size specifications for the PV and battery integrated system. This study suggests that NSGA-II is suitable for sizing a PV and battery integrated system for a detached house.

Supercritical multi-source, multi-component thermal fluid is a heavy oil thermal recovery method independently developed by China National Offshore Oil Co., Ltd (Beijing, China). It uses waste liquid at the production end of the production well as the water source, the injection medium temperature exceeds 374 °C, 22.1 MPa, and all the produced flue gas is re-injected. Compared with steam huff and puff technology, supercritical technology has the advantages of high enthalpy value, high heat utilization rate, good oil displacement effect, and being green and pollution-free. In addition, its oil–water treatment cost is low, it can realize the reuse of organic matter, it has a good cost advantage of water treatment under the background of low carbon, and it is a thermal recovery method with great application potential for offshore heavy oil. Therefore, it is necessary to carry out research on the adaptability and application potential of supercritical multi-source, multi-heat flow thermal recovery technology in the sea. Based on the laboratory one-dimensional displacement experiment, this paper reveals the mechanism of heavy oil supercritical multi-source multi-component thermal fluid displacement and the contribution of supercritical components to the displacement effect, and establishes the supercritical multi-source, multi-component thermal fluid numerical simulation characterization method. Combined with the characteristics of offshore heavy oil reserves, the main control factors affecting supercritical multi-source, multi-component thermal fluid development were established by numerical simulation and orthogonal test methods, and the adaptive screening method of offshore supercritical technology was established. The application potential of 670 million tons of offshore heavy oil reserves was evaluated and sorted, and KL 10-2 oilfield was selected as the pilot test oilfield. The results show that supercritical technology has great advantages in oil displacement and water treatment cost reduction, and the results play an important guiding significance for the development of offshore heavy oil technology system and the iteration of new technology.

Highlights Hydrogel demonstrates superior merits of strain (1586%), self-adhesion (113 kPa for pigskin), high conductivity and transparency (92%). The wearable sensors with a gauge factor up to 18.54, wide pressure sensing range (0–600 kPa) enable the detecting, quantifying, and monitoring of human activities. The hydrogels were developed as electronic skin, high output stretchable CTA-TENGs and explored using as wearable keyboards for human-machine interaction.

This paper examines the lithology, pore throat, and fluid characteristics of the reservoir in Liaohe Oilfield Block 3624, using group V rocks as an example, combining a high-temperature and high-pressure reaction still with other equipment such as a rock mechanics tester and a scanning electron microscope. This study also designs and develops three controlled variable experiments, including the subcritical steam reservoir rock dissolution experiment, the subcritical steam reservoir rock mineral composition transformation experiment, and the subcritical steam reservoir rock mineral mechanical property experiment, also making clear the rule of change on the part of the rocks in the deep and heavy oil reservoirs after the injection of subcritical steam. Experimental results reveal the following: (1) Steam causes the dissolution of rocks, and when the steam temperature is in the subcritical region, dissolution is visible. After a 350 °C subcritical steam treatment, the relative melting temperatures of the components of rock materials are substantially greater than the melting point of the cement holding them together, causing the cement to significantly dissolve and a secondary crack network to emerge. (2) The mineral composition of the rocks changes as a result of elevated temperatures, with various mineral transformation trajectories being recorded after various steam treatments. Montmorillonite in reservoir rocks is converted into minerals like illite and chlorite in the subcritical steam temperature range. Another element influencing the creation of secondary cracks on rock surfaces is the reciprocal transformation of minerals, which alters the cohesiveness among mineral components. (3) Rocks suffer thermal damage and changes to their mechanical characteristics as a result of high-temperature steam dissolution and mineral transformations; the severity of these changes increases with the steam temperature.

With increasing consumption of primary energy and deterioration of the global environment, clean energy sources with large reserves, such as natural gas, have gradually gained a higher proportion of the global energy consumption structure. Monitoring and predicting consumption data play a crucial role in reducing energy waste and improving energy supply efficiency. However, owing to factors such as high monitoring device costs, safety risks associated with device installation, and low efficiency of manual meter reading, monitoring natural gas consumption data at the household level is challenging. Moreover, there is a lack of methods for predicting natural gas consumption at the household level in residential areas, which hinders the provision of accurate services to households and gas companies. Therefore, this study proposes a gas consumption monitoring method based on the K-nearest neighbours (KNN) algorithm. Using households in a residential area in Xi’an as research subjects, the feasibility of this monitoring method was validated, achieving a model recognition accuracy of 100%, indicating the applicability of the KNN algorithm for monitoring natural gas consumption data. In addition, this study proposes a framework for a natural gas consumption prediction system based on a backpropagation (BP) neural network.

Objective To establish gas chromatography for the determination of tributyl phosphate(TBP) residues in human prothrombin complex and then verify it. Methods Acid modified polyethylene glycol(PEG)(20M) capillary column was used with n-hexane as solvent. The chromatographic parameters were as follows: gasification chamber temperature at 220 ℃, column temperature at 155 ℃, detector temperature at 220 ℃, column flow rate at 2.0 mL/min, carrier gas as N2, detector as FID, and collection time for 10min. The accuracy, repeatability, linearity, specificity, intermediate precision, detection limit, quantitative limit, range and durability were verified. Results The verification results showed that the method had good specificity. The linear regression correlation coefficient of standard curve was 0.999 90. The recovery rate were 98.4%, 97.5% and 95.7% when the concentration at 50%, 100%(30μg/mL) and 150%, respectively, with an average recovery of 97.2% and a relative deviation of 2.15%. When the concentration was 100%, the repeatability was 2.08%, and the relative deviation of intermediate precision was 1.63%. The detection limit was 0.255 μg/mL, and the quantitative limit was 0.511 μg/mL. After changing capillary chromatographic columns with different batch numbers but the same types and manufacturer, the applicability test of the system met the requirements, and the method had good durability. Conclusion This method can be used for the determination of TBP residues of human prothrombin complex in laboratory.

Objective To establish and verify the vacuum decay method for the tightness inspection of blood products. Methods The method for inspecting the tightness of blood product was established, and the detection limit, linearity, range, accuracy, precision and durability were verified according to the requirements of methodological verification.The validated method was used to check the tightness of blood product packaging. Results The detection limit of this method was 2.5 μm, linear correlation coefficient was r=1, the differential pressure of positive sample was within the allowable range of accuracy, and the durability met the requirements.The RSD of results of 6 repeatability tests and 12 intermediate precision tests were both less than 10%, and all validation items met the verification standards. Conclusion Vacuum decay method can be used to check the tightness of blood products.

Introduction: Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease and the leading cause of blindness in developed countries. Current genome-wide association studies (GWAS) for late-stage age-related macular degeneration are mainly single-marker-based approaches, which investigate one Single-Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP) at a time and postpone the integration of inter-marker Linkage-disequilibrium (LD) information in the downstream fine mappings. Recent studies showed that directly incorporating inter-marker connection/correlation into variants detection can help discover novel marginally weak single-nucleotide polymorphisms, which are often missed in conventional genome-wide association studies, and can also help improve disease prediction accuracy.Methods: Single-marker analysis is performed first to detect marginally strong single-nucleotide polymorphisms. Then the whole-genome linkage-disequilibrium spectrum is explored and used to search for high-linkage-disequilibrium connected single-nucleotide polymorphism clusters for each strong single-nucleotide polymorphism detected. Marginally weak single-nucleotide polymorphisms are selected via a joint linear discriminant model with the detected single-nucleotide polymorphism clusters. Prediction is made based on the selected strong and weak single-nucleotide polymorphisms.Results: Several previously identified late-stage age-related macular degeneration susceptibility genes, for example, BTBD16, C3, CFH, CFHR3, HTARA1, are confirmed. Novel genes DENND1B, PLK5, ARHGAP45, and BAG6 are discovered as marginally weak signals. Overall prediction accuracy of 76.8% and 73.2% was achieved with and without the inclusion of the identified marginally weak signals, respectively.Conclusion: Marginally weak single-nucleotide polymorphisms, detected from integrating inter-marker linkage-disequilibrium information, may have strong predictive effects on age-related macular degeneration. Detecting and integrating such marginally weak signals can help with a better understanding of the underlying disease-development mechanisms for age-related macular degeneration and more accurate prognostics.

(1) Background: The imaging energy range of a typical Compton camera is limited due to the fact that scattered gamma photons are seldom fully absorbed when the incident energies are above 3 MeV. Further improving the upper energy limit of gamma-ray imaging has important application significance in the active interrogation of special nuclear materials and chemical warfare agents, as well as range verification of proton therapy. (2) Methods: To realize gamma-ray imaging in a wide energy range of 0.3~7 MeV, a principle prototype, named a portable three-layer Compton camera, is developed using the scintillation detector that consists of an silicon photomultiplier array coupled with a Gd3Al2Ga3O12:Ce pixelated scintillator array. Implemented in a list-mode maximum likelihood expectation maximization algorithm, a far-field energy-domain imaging method based on the two interaction events is applied to estimate the initial energy and spatial distribution of gamma-ray sources. The simulation model of the detectors is established based on the Monte Carlo simulation toolkit Geant4. The reconstructed images of a 133Ba, a 137Cs and a 60Co point-like sources have been successfully obtained with our prototype in laboratory tests and compared with simulation studies. (3) Results: The proportion of effective imaging events accounts for about 2%, which allows our prototype to realize the reconstruction of the distribution of a 0.05 μSv/h 137Cs source in 10 s. The angular resolution for resolving two 137Cs point-like sources is 15°. Additional simulated imaging of the 6.13 MeV gamma-rays from 14.1 MeV neutron scattering with water preliminarily demonstrates the imaging capability for high incident energy. (4) Conclusions: We conclude that the prototype has a good imaging performance in a wide energy range (0.3~7 MeV), which shows potential in several MeV gamma-ray imaging applications.

Both drought and high temperature can influence the antioxidant metabolism of crop reproductive organs in different ways, affecting the fertility of reproductive organs and yield formation. However, the combined effects of drought stress and high temperature on the crop reproductive physiology have not yet been widely considered. In order to broaden our understanding of this mechanism of influence, a pond experiment was conducted using a cotton variety Yuzaomian 9110 divided into four treatment groups: control (CK), drought stress (DS), high temperature (HT), and drought stress coupled with high temperature (DS+HT). Results showed a significant negative correlation between pollen viability and superoxide anion (O2−) content, as well as hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Compared with CK, DS did not alter O2− content in anthers, but HT treatment resulted in higher anther O2−. Compared with single-stress groups, DS+HT further promoted the formation of O2− in anthers, leading to more malondialdehyde in anthers. Moreover, a higher H2O2 content in anthers was found in DS and HT than in CK. DS+HT did not show altered H2O2 content relative to HT treatment, although its H2O2 was higher than in DS. Further analyses of the antioxidant enzyme system showed that DS had no significant effect on superoxide dismutase gene (GhCu/ZnSOD) expression, but HT and DS+HT significantly downregulated its expression. The expression of GhCu/ZnSOD was lower under DS+HT than HT, which might be why O2− content was not altered under DS treatment compared with CK and was higher in DS+HT than HT. DS and HT significantly downregulated the expression of the peroxidase gene (GhPOD) and catalase gene (GhCAT), which should be the main reason for the larger accumulation of H2O2 under drought stress and high-temperature conditions. Compared with single-stress groups, DS+HT had lower expression of GhCAT, resulting in a larger H2O2 content. Regarding the ascorbic acid–glutathione (AsA–GSH) cycle, DS and HT significantly downregulated the expression of monodehydroascorbate reductase gene (GhMDHAR) to hinder the production of AsA and upregulated the expression of ascorbate oxidase gene (GhAAO) to promote the oxidation of AsA, which was theoretically detrimental to AsA accumulation. However, HT downregulated the expression of the ascorbate peroxidase gene (GhAPX), hindering the reduction of H2O2 by AsA, which was the reason for AsA and H2O2 accumulation. Moreover, DS also significantly upregulated the expression of the dehydroascorbate reductase gene (GhDHAR2) to enhance the reduction of dehydroascorbate to form AsA, leading to a higher content of AsA under DS than HT. The combined stress significantly downregulated the expression of GhAAO to inhibit the oxidation of AsA but significantly upregulated the expression of GhMDHAR and GhDHAR2, promoting the AsA production, and downregulated the expression of GhAPX, hindering the reduction of H2O2 by AsA. All these resulted in increased AsA content under combined stresses. In addition, HT significantly downregulated the glutathione reductase gene (GhGR) expression, hindering the reduction of oxidized glutathione (GSSG), which led to the reduction of GSH. However, DS and DS+HT significantly downregulated the glutathione peroxidase gene (GhGPX) expression, resulting in the accumulation of GSH. Overall, compared with single-stress treatments, the effects of DS+HT on cotton pollen fertility and peroxide accumulation were more significant. The effects of DS+HT on the antioxidant enzyme system were mainly caused by high temperature, while the mechanism of abnormal accumulation of AsA and GSH caused by DS+HT was different from those of single-stress groups.

This work presents a novel stereo coded aperture gamma camera based on four detection modules placed within four quadrants. Each module includes 48 × 48 strips of Bi4Ge3O12 scintillators, 24 × 24 pieces of silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs), and a set of data acquisition circuits. All signals from the SiPMs are individually extracted and finally simplified into 144 outputs to calculate the positions and energies of gamma-rays. Two masks of modified uniformly redundant arrays are fixed in the front of the top-right and bottom-left modules and two anti-masks are fixed in the top-left and bottom-right modules to achieve simultaneous imaging without dual measure. Once the projections of radioactive sources are determined, their source-to-detector distances can be estimated by our new multocular ranging algorithm. A series of lab and field experiments, including flood histogram and energy spectrum testing, field-of-view and angular resolution testing, real-time imaging, long-distance imaging, and ranging ability testing, with different radioactive sources, such as 137Cs, 22Na, 241Am, 60Co, 133Ba, and 75Se, have been completed to evaluate the comprehensive ability of the stereo gamma camera. The results show that the stereo gamma camera has a strong ability for the three-dimensional localization of radioactive sources over long distances with a high image sensitivity. So far, the stereo gamma camera has been successfully used in practical nuclear security and safety tasks although the angular resolution and the ranging algorithm robustness should be more optimized in the future.

This paper presents an improved Plantard’s modular arithmetic (Plantard arithmetic) tailored for Lattice-Based Cryptography (LBC). Based on the improved Plantard arithmetic, we present faster implementations of two LBC schemes, Kyber and NTTRU, running on Cortex-M4. The intrinsic advantage of Plantard arithmetic is that one multiplication can be saved from the modular multiplication of a constant. However, the original Plantard arithmetic is not very practical in LBC schemes because of the limitation on the unsigned input range. In this paper, we improve the Plantard arithmetic and customize it for the existing LBC schemes with theoretical proof. The improved Plantard arithmetic not only inherits its aforementioned advantage but also accepts signed inputs, produces signed output, and enlarges its input range compared with the original design. Moreover, compared with the state-of-the-art Montgomery arithmetic, the improved Plantard arithmetic has a larger input range and smaller output range, which allows better lazy reduction strategies during the NTT/INTT implementation in current LBC schemes. All these merits make it possible to replace the Montgomery arithmetic with the improved Plantard arithmetic in LBC schemes on some platforms. After applying this novel method to Kyber and NTTRU schemes using 16-bit NTT on Cortex-M4 devices, we show that the proposed design outperforms the known fastest implementation that uses Montgomery and Barrett arithmetic. Specifically, compared with the state-of-the-art Kyber implementation, applying the improved Plantard arithmetic in Kyber results in a speedup of 25.02% and 18.56% for NTT and INTT, respectively. Compared with the reference implementation of NTTRU, our NTT and INTT achieve speedup by 83.21% and 78.64%, respectively. As for the LBC KEM schemes, we set new speed records for Kyber and NTTRU running on Cortex-M4.

Lung cancer is the widespread carcinogenesis in men and the third most familiar cancer in women. It is one of the mostly aggressive human cancers, which is responsible for around 1.4 million deaths per annum and has utmost mortality and incidence with 1.8 million new incidences and 1.6 million new deaths yearly. In this present study, we have evaluated the anticancer potential of zinc oxide nanopartices (ZnONPs) synthesized from a root extract of Euphorbia fischeriana (EF), through the apoptosis signaling markers in A549 lung cancer cells. The synthesized EF-ZnONPs were evaluated through the transmission electron microscope (TEM), Fourier transform infra red (FTIR), UV–visible spectroscopy and dynamic light scattering (DLS) techniques. The EF-ZnONPs were assessed for their cytotoxicity activity towards A549 cells by MTT test. The induction of apoptosis was analysed by the mitochondria membrane potential (MMP), reactive oxygen species (ROS), cell migration and dual staining. Furthermore, pro and anti-apoptotic signaling protein expression was evaluated by western blotting method. We found the bioformulated EF-ZnONPs has a spherical morphology and revealed the existence of diverse bioactive compounds. Also we found the cytotoxic effect of EF-ZnONPs. Apoptosis was activated by the EF-ZnONPs with improved ROS, decreased MMP, inhibited cell migration and altered dual staining was observed. Furthermore, the diminished expression of anti-apoptotic protein Bcl-2 was noted. In this study, we observed the formulation, characterization and anticancer potency of ZnONPs of EF plant extract (EF-ZnONPs) was useful for treatments of lung cancer.

In order to accurately predict geomechanical parameters of oil-bearing reservoirs and influencing factors of volumetric fracturing, a new method of geomechanical parameter prediction combining seismic inversion, well logging interpretation and production data is proposed in this paper. Herein, we present a structure model, petrophysical model and geomechanical model. Moreover, a three-dimensional geomechanical model of a typical reservoir was established and corrected using history matching. On this basis, a typical well model was established, 11 influencing factors of volume fracturing including formation parameters and fracturing parameters were analyzed and their impact were ranked, and the oil recovery rate and the accumulated oil production before and after optimal fracturing were compared. The results show that with respect to formation parameters, reservoir thickness is the main influencing factor; interlayer thickness and stress difference are the secondary influencing factors; and formation permeability, Young’s modulus and Poisson’s ratio are the weak influencing factors. For a pilot well of a typical reservoir, the optimized fracture increased production by 7 tons/day relative to traditional fracturing. After one year of production, the method increased production by 4 tons/day relative to traditional fracturing, showing great potential in similar oil reservoirs.

To resolve the issues of the high porous medium flow resistance, low oil production rate, high oil decline rate, and low oil recovery factor for the cyclic steam stimulation (CSS) of horizontal wells in heavy oil reservoirs, the CSS method assisted by the electric heating (E-CSS) of horizontal wells was proposed in this study. Combining the heat from electric heating and steam during E-CSS, the analytical model of formation temperature rise was established for the three phases of electric-assisted CSS (i.e., injection, soaking, production), and physical experiments were carried out to compare the performance of conventional CSS and E-CSS. The experimental results were used to validate the analytical model and reveal the impact of the key electric heating mechanism on the horizontal CSS performance. Meanwhile, the typical well model was used to forecast the E-CSS potential. The results indicate that electric heating can achieve uniform heating in the steam injection phase, maintain heating around the wellbore in the soak phase, and reduce flow resistance and enhance oil output in the production phase. Forecasts of the typical well model indicate that electric heating can enhance the oil recovery factor by 9.4% and the oil-steam ratio from 0.14 to 0.23, implying a significant application potential in heavy oil reservoirs developed by horizontal CSS.

In the process of waterflooding development of heavy oil, W/O emulsion has a strong ability to improve the mobility ratio and block the high-permeability layer, which can effectively improve the sweep coefficient and enhance oil recovery. In this paper, the stability and droplet size distribution of emulsions under different conditions were studied by taking heavy oil and formation water from Jimusar Oilfield in Xinjiang as samples. On this basis, double-pipe core flooding experiments were carried out to study the shut-off ability and oil displacement efficiency of W/O emulsion, and then a numerical simulation was carried out. The results show that oil and water can be completely emulsified when the stirring speed is higher than 4000 r/min. A stable emulsion can be formed when the experimental temperature is lower than 60 °C. A lower water cut results in a more stable emulsion. The emulsion is difficult to stabilize after the salinity exceeds 10,000 mg/L. When the pH value is about 7, the stability of the emulsion is the worst. With the increase in stirring speed, the increase in temperature, and the decrease in water content and salinity, the emulsion droplet size range is relatively concentrated, and the average particle size is smaller. In heterogeneous reservoirs, the permeability of different percolation channels is quite different, such that the displacement fluid only percolates along the high-permeability channel and cannot drive oil effectively. The results of displacement experiments show that the emulsion with a water cut of 60% has high viscosity and obvious sweep ability, but its stability is very poor; the effect is opposite when the water cut is less than 40%. The shut-off ability of W/O emulsion disappears gradually when the permeability contrast is more than 5.92. The research results are of great significance for improving oil recovery in heterogeneous heavy oil reservoirs.

It is necessary to establish effective communication between two horizontal wells during the preheating period of steam-assisted gravity-drainage (SAGD). However, the preheating time is usually very long, which results in high steam consumption and CO2 emissions. There is little research on the effects of different wellbore fluids during the preheating period. The heat transfer and heating characteristics of different wellbore fluids–water, heat-conduction oil, and air–were explored by using physical experiments and numerical simulations. In this study, the results indicated that the heat-transfer performance of heat-conduction oil is the best. The numerical simulation’s results indicated that compared with the wellbore saturated with water, the heat-conduction oil reduced the viscosity of crude oil, and energy consumption was not obvious during the preheating stage. The super-heavy oil flowed into the wellbore due to the solubility of the heat-conduction oil and its own gravity. As a result, the super-heavy oil content in the wellbore gradually accumulated, increasing the risk of coking. Those experiments showed that the use of electrical heating provides good potential to improve SAGD efficiency during the preheating period, and water is the best injection fluid for wellbores during the electrical heating process.

The production performance of waterflood reservoirs with years of production is severely challenged by high water cuts and extensive water channels. Among IOR/EOR methods, weak gel injection is particularly effective in improving the water displacement efficiency and oil recovery. The visualized microscopic oil displacement experiments were designed to comprehensively investigate the weak gel mechanisms in porous media and the numerical simulations coupling equations characterizing weak gel viscosity induced dynamics were implemented to understand its planar and vertical block and movement behaviors at the field scale. From experiments, the residual oil of initial water flooding mainly exists in the form of cluster, column, dead end, and membranous, and it mainly exists in the form of cluster and dead end in subsequent water flooding stage following weak gel injection. The porous flow mechanism of weak gel includes the preferential plugging of large channels, the integral and staged transport of weak gel, and the residual oil flow along pore walls in weak gel displacement. The profile-control mechanism of weak gel is as follows: weak gel selectively enters the large channels, weak gel blocks large channels and forces subsequent water flow to change direction, weak gel uses viscoelastic bulk motion to form negative pressure oil absorption, and the oil droplets converge to form an oil stream, respectively. The numerical simulation indicates that weak gel can effectively reduce the water-oil mobility ratio, preferentially block the high permeability layer and the large pore channels, divert the subsequent water to flood the low permeability layer, and improve the water injection swept efficiency. It is found numerically that a weak gel system is able to flow forward under high-pressure differences in the subsequent water flooding, which can further improve oil displacement efficiency. Unlike the conventional profile-control methods, weak gels make it possible to displace the bypassed oil in the deep inter-well regions with significant potential to enhance oil recovery.

Background: Poverty alleviation resettlement (PAR) program has become an important approach adopted by Chinese government to deal with rural poverty. Earlier programs were experimented for decades; we study a PAR program implemented by a local government in 1994. Objective: This research aims to study the effects of the PAR program on the long-run development of children from a life course perspective. Methods: We adopted a quasi-experimental design, by comparing the experimental group with a control group, using information of children's long-run outcomes from field survey and government archive. Results: We find that girls are worse off both in terms of education outcome and individual earnings in adulthood. Boys are less likely to be affected by the PAR experiment, but their earnings in adulthood are worse than those in the control group. Conclusions: Overall, the results of the PAR experiment are not positive, for which we provide some possible explanations. Easier job access might discourage long-term investment in education. The PAR program might have short-term economic benefits but the long-term impact could be negative because of constrained choice of employment and location-specific skill accumulation that later can become less beneficial. Contribution: The paper investigates the potential bad consequences of poverty alleviate resettlement on children's long-run development. From a policy perspective, in the program we studied, people in the treated group are simply resettled to a designated area. A "one to many" relocation with free destination choices might be better.

Recently, partially coherent beams with twist phases have attracted growing interest due to their nontrivial dynamic characteristics. In this work, the propagation characteristics of a twisted cosine-Gaussian correlated radially polarized beam such as the spectral intensity, the spectral degree of coherence, the degree of polarization, the state of polarization, and the spectral change are investigated in detail. Due to the presence of the twisted phase, the beam spot, the degree of coherence, and the state of polarization experience rotation during transmission, but the degree of polarization is not twisted. Meanwhile, although their rotation speeds closely depend on the value of the twist factor, they all undergo a rotation of π / 2 when they reach the focal plane. Furthermore, the effect of the twist phase on the spectral change is similar to the coherence, which is achieved by modulating the spectral density distribution during transmission. The twist phase opens up a useful guideline for manipulation of novel vector structure beams and enriches potential applications in the field of beam shaping, optical tweezers, optical imaging, and free space optical communications.
