Objective: To better understand the wetland restoration, the physicochemical properties and microbial community in different compartments (rhizosphere and bulk soil) of the status of living and death T. chinensis covered soil zones were studied in a restored coastal tidal flat located on the Zhoushan island.Results: There were differences between growth conditions in the levels of soil pH, salinity, SOM, and nutrient. The living status of T. chinensis exhibited higher capacity of decreasing saline-alkali soil than the death condition of plants, and the living condition of T. chinensis showed higher uptake of N, P, and K as compared with the death samples. Proteobacteria, Bacteroidota, and Chloroflexi were the predominant bacterial communities as revealed via high-throughput sequencing. This study contributed to our understanding of halophyte growth on coastal phytoremediation, and guide theoretically for management of T. chinensis population.

Previous research has demonstrated that different cancer survivors with the same disease history or treatment may have different experiences of fatigue. This cross-sectional study aims to explore how demographic, oncological, sociological, psychological, and serum hormone levels interact to influence the distinct experiences of fatigue (Cancer-related fatigue occurrence and fatigue degree). General information, fatigue, psychological factors was evaluated by general information questionnaire, the Revised Piper's Fatigue Scale-Chinese Version, and the self-report Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. Serum hormones were measured with chemiluminescent enzyme immunoassay (Zhengzhou Antobio). 306 patients were included, 229 (74.8%) were diagnosed with CRF, including 94 (41.0%) with mild fatigue, 121 (52.8%) with moderate fatigue, and 14 (6.1%) with severe fatigue. Oxidation remediation is a commonly used technology for PAHs contaminated soil presently, but the overestimate of efficiency due to ongoing remediation by residual oxidants during extraction and testing has not been paid enough attention. In this study, persulfate was activated by Fe(II) to investigate the effects of residual oxidants on PAHs removal during detection process and the elimination effects of adding Na2SO3 and extending sampling time on residual oxidants. Results verified that the residual oxidants removed PAHs in extraction process, making the results lower than the actual values: the detection recovery rate η of ∑PAHs and 3-6 ring PAHs ranged from 24.3% (25% Na2S2O8 treatment) to 87.4% (5% Na2S2O8+4/4Fe2+ treatment), 20.1%-99.0%, 28.9%-87.9%, 20.8%-89.4%, and 18.6%-76.9%, respectively. After adding Na2SO3, the accuracy of detection results increased significantly: the η of ∑PAHs and 3-6 ring PAHs increased to 64.1%-96.5%, 58.8%-95.5%, 73.8%-114.4%, 60.6%-95.6%, and 45.4%-77.1%, respectively. After 49 days of adding oxidants, residual oxidants had no considerable effect on the detection of PAHs, indicating it was appropriate to start soil remediation verification sampling49 days after the remediation was completed. The observed results will help scientific evaluation of the remediation effects of chemical oxidation on organic contaminated soil.

At present, the cyanide gold extraction process is still the main technology for gold production. Generated cyanide tailings containing highly toxic substances exhibit potential environmental risks. These tailings are in urgent need of purification treatment, especially after being classified as hazardous waste. In this study, the impacts of elution methods, operating time, tailings/water ratios, reagent types on the elution rates of cyanide were investigated. Furthermore, the composite elution method developed in this research was extended for engineering. Results showed that the optimum elution conditions were determined to be: stirring elution, tailings/water ratio (M/V; 1:1) and operating time (10-20 min). Besides, 4 reagents (sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate, cyclodextrin, sodium silicate and calcium hydroxide) were selected from four categories of 21 reagents for further composite elution. The cyanide elution rate was the highest (90.7%±0.1%) while the molar ratio of these 4 reagents was 5:2:2:1. Moreover, the combination of reagent elution and positive pressure filtration improved the elution efficiency of cyanide (92.6%±0.8%). And the cyanide content in the toxic leaching solution was lower than the standard value (5.0 mg/L). Furthermore, the composite elution method developed in this study was also extended for engineering. The concentration of cyanide in the leachate was5.0 mg/L, and was stable during 189 days of detection. Notably, the effluent can be reused directly, or reused after further treatment. The zero discharge of effluents and solid wastes was realized in the processes. The above results provided supports for the engineering treatment of cyanide tailings.

Valproic acid is an anticonvulsant, which is also widely used for treating psychiatric disorders. Some clinical trials have demonstrated benefits of valproic acid augmentation therapy in schizophrenia. Interindividual variability in valproic acid dose and serum concentration may reflect functional consequences of genetic polymorphisms in genes encoding drug-metabolizing enzymes. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between serum concentrations of valproic acid and single nucleotide polymorphisms of the cytochrome P450 (CYP) 2C19 gene in patients with schizophrenia. All patients had been receiving fixed dose of valproic acid for at least 2 weeks. The daily doses were 0.5–1.5 g. No other drugs except olanzapine were coadministered. Serum concentrations of valproic acid were measured using the ultra-high performance liquid chromatography method with mass-spectrometric detection. The CYP2C19 (CYP2C19*2 G681A rs4244285 and CYP2C19*3 G636A rs4986893) genotypes were identified by real-time PCR analyses. The mean concentration/dose ratios of valproic acid were significantly higher in patients with CYP2C19 *1/*2 genotype (P CYP2C19 *2/*3 genotype (P CYP2C12 *1/*1 genotype. The mean concentration/dose ratios of valproic acid were significantly higher in patients with 1 (P P CYP2C19 than in those without mutated alleles. And the post hoc analysis revealed that the result has acceptable statistical (power (1 – β) = 0.8486 at type I level of 0.05) to support the observed significant associations for CYP2C19 SNPs and serum C/D ratios of valproic acid. The findings of this study suggest that the genetic polymorphisms of CYP2C19 significantly affect the steady-state serum concentrations of valproic acid in Chinese Han population. The determination of the CYP2C19 genotypes may be useful for dosing adjustment in schizophrenia patients on valproic acid therapy.

Purpose: Previous research has demonstrated that different cancer survivors with the same disease history or treatment may have different experiences of fatigue. This study aims to explore how demographic, oncological, sociological, psychological, and serum hormone levels interact to influence the distinct experiences of fatigue (CRF occurrence and fatigue degree). Methods: A cross-sectional study carried out at the oncology outpatient and ward department of Xiyuan Hospital of China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences recruited 306 cancer patients between January 2021 to December 2021. Differences between groups were examined using chi-square and nonparametric testing, and binary and ordered logistic regression were used to explore the factors related with the prevalence of CRF and the aggravation of fatigue, respectively. Results: Among the 306 patients, 229 (74.8%) were diagnosed with CRF, including 94 (41.0%) with mild fatigue, 121 (52.8%) with moderate fatigue, and 14 (6.1%) with severe fatigue. Multivariate regression analysis showed that higher depression scores, aldosterone levels may increase the risk of CRF. Patients who are obese (BMI ≥ 28 kg/m2) may help to reduce the risk of CRF. Other contributing factors for increased levels of fatigue (p < 0.05) include being female, having anxiety, depression and high aldosterone levels. Conclusion: CRF was a common symptom in cancer survivors. Gender, BMI, emotional state, aldosterone levels may be influential factors in the differential experience of fatigue. Implications for Cancer Survivors: Pay attention to these influencing factors may help to better identify patients susceptible to fatigue and provide long-term, targeted interventions.

Oxalic acid is the most abundant low molecular weight organic acid (LMWOA) in many environments and offers enormous prospects for treating Cr(VI) contamination. In this study, laboratory batch experiments were conducted to estimate the roles of oxalic acid in Cr(VI) removal by Penicillium oxalicum SL2. Oxalic acid changed the initial pH and provided a suitable condition for the growth of strain SL2 when the penicillium was applied to bioremediation of Cr(VI) contamination in alkaline soil. Gompertz model analysis indicated that initial pH affected the lag time of the growth curve of strain SL2. Scanning electron microscopy and scanning transmission X-ray microscopy analysis showed strain SL2 sufficiently contacted with contaminated soil and reduced Cr(VI) to Cr(III) in the hyphae. The results suggested that oxalic acid could enhance the bioremediation efficiency of strain SL2 though improving chromium bioleaching from the contaminated soil and strengthening Cr(VI) removal in the leaching solution. This study provided oxalic acid as a green reagent for stimulating Cr(VI) removal by strain SL2 and would expand knowledge on the roles of LMWOA in Cr(VI) bioremediation.

Cyanide tailings are the major hazardous wastes generated in the production process of the gold industry, which not only contain highly toxic cyanide, but also contain heavy metals with recycling value and other substances suitable for building materials or filling. These tailings are in urgent need of purification treatment and safe utilization. In this study, the impacts of treatment methods, types and combinations of reagents on decyanation effect were researched. Gold in cyanide tailings was recovered by flotation, and flotation tailings were used for filling after identifying the properties of solid waste. Results are as follows: (1) INCO method and 5 reagents (sodium sulfite, sodium persulfate, copper sulfate, ferrous sulfate and zinc sulfate) were selected for synergistic decyanation treatment, and cyanide concents in slurry and leaching solution were decreased to the minimum. (2) The gold recovery rate of the tailings through flotation was increased by 27.8% than without detoxification. (3) Flotation tailings were identified as general industrial solid wastes by leaching toxicity and toxic substance content analysis. (4) As filling aggregate, under the conditions of slurry concentration of 63% and cement-sand ratio of 1:6, the strength filling body of flotation tailings reached 1.32 Mpa after 28 days of maintenance. (5) This process and combined reagents were applied to engineering. The cyanide content in the leaching solution and the flotation recovery rate of gold were kept below 0.2 mg/L and above 60% respectively, and the strength of the filling body was stable to meet the requirements of underground filling.

Copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs) are widely used as fungicides in agriculture. Arsenic (As) is a ubiquitous contaminant in paddy soil. The present study was focused on the adsorption behavior of CuO NPs with regard to As as well as the characteristics of the microbial community changes in As-contaminated soil-rice systems in response to CuO NPs. The study found that CuO NPs could be a temporary sink of As in soil; a high dose of CuO NPs promoted the release of As from crystalline iron oxide, which increased the As content in the liquid phase. Excess chromium (Cr) and arsenic (As) coexist in soil such as chromated copper arsenate (CCA) contaminated sites, leading to high risks of pollution. Fe-biochar with adjustable redox activity offers the possibility of simultaneous stabilization of Cr and As. Here, a series of Fe-biochar with distinct Fe/C structure were rationally produced for the remediation of Cr and As contaminated soil (BCX-Fe, X represented the biomass/Fe ratio). Adsorption tests showed that maximal adsorption of BC5-Fe for Cr(VI) and As(III) reached 73.7 and 81.3 mg/g. A 90-day soil remediation experiment indicated that the introduction of 3 % (w/w) Fe-biochar reduced the leaching state of Cr(VI) by 93.8-99.7 % and As by 75.2-95.6 %. Under simulated groundwater erosion for 10 years and acid rain leaching for 7.5 years, the release levels of Cr(VI) and As in the BC5-Fe remediated soil could meet the groundwater class IV standard in China (Cr(VI) 0.1 mg/L, As0.05 mg/L). Accelerated aging tests demonstrated that BC5-Fe had long-term Cr and As stabilization ability. The quenching experiment, EPR, and XPS suggested that the corrosion products of Fe dominated the adsorption and redox reactions, while the O groups acted as electron transfer stations and constituted redox microcirculation in the synchronous uptake of Cr/As. Based on these insights, we believe that our study will provide meaningful information about the application potential of Fe-biochar for the heavy metal contaminated soil remediation.

Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) waste produced by chrome plating activities pollutes the surrounding environment and harms human health. However, information about the chromium (Cr) pollution characteristics of actual electroplating sites is still lacking. In this study, the concentration, leachability and speciation of Cr in soils from a typical chrome plating site were analyzed. Our results showed that this site was severely contaminated by Cr (7.2 to 7735.2 mg/kg) and Cr(VI) reached the mean concentration of 138.7 mg/kg. The spatial distribution of Cr(VI) was related to the plating processes. Chrome plating and sewage treatment areas could be considered as the hot spots of contaminated sites. The vertical distribution of Cr(VI) was mainly affected by soil properties, where the loam layer retained and reduced a large amount of Cr(VI) due to its high content of iron minerals and finer particle fractions. Additionally, the chemical extraction results showed that Cr was mainly in non-residual fractions and the existence of Cr(VI) led to a high leaching toxicity based on the toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) results. Moreover, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results revealed the speciation of Cr in the long-term contaminated soils. A large amount of Cr(VI) was reduced into Cr(III) and mainly existed as Cr(OH)3 and Cr2O3. Furthermore, Cr(VI) tended to precipitate as CaCrO4 and persisted in soils. Therefore, it is necessary to find appropriate strategies to remediate these contaminated soils. Overall, these findings strengthen our understanding of Cr(VI) behaviors and lay a foundation for the future pollution investigation, ecological remediation and risk assessment of sites contaminated by electroplating.

The remediation of soil contaminated with multiple heavy metals is a matter of great concern due to its serious threat to the ecosystem and human health. Batch and slurry reactor soil washing experiments were conducted to explore the removal of Cd, Cr, Pb and Zn using 7 agents. Citric acid (CA) and ferric chloride (FeCl3) exhibited an obvious synergistic effect on the removal of heavy metals. Furthermore, the concentration of heavy metals in different soil particle size fractions was closely related to the soil element concentrations. Fine sand (0.05–0.25 mm) had a strong adsorption capacity for Cr and Pb because of the high Mn concentration. Notably, heavy metals in smaller-size soil particles could be efficiently removed by CA and FeCl3. After remediation, the bioavailability of heavy metals in soil decreased. The potential ecological risk of heavy metals in soil reduced from an extremely high level to a low level. Moreover, some elements (e.g. Al, Mn and Fe) and organic matter in soil were dissolved by CA and FeCl3, which accelerated the desorption of heavy metals from the soil. In a slurry reactor experiment, the removal efficiencies of Cd, Cr, Pb and Zn were 94.8%, 79.5%, 92.7% and 97.2%, respectively. The combination of CA and FeCl3 is a feasible practice to remediate soil contaminated by multiple heavy metals.

Consecutive replanting significantly affects the yield and quality of Atractylodes macrocephala due to replant disease. To explore the changes in the rhizosphere soil when atractylodes get replant disease, we detect soil physicochemical properties and the microbial community. The results show higher level of pH and phosphatase activity in the rhizo-soil of diseased plants than that of healthy ones. Moreover, 42 species of bacteria in the phylum of Acidobacteria, Gemmatimonadetes, Nitrospirae, Elusimicrobia, and Chlorobi show higher diversity, while 8 species in the phylum of Actinobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes, and Fibrobacteres demonstrate lower diversity in that of diseased ones. In particular, decreased numbers of some beneficial bacteria including Sphingobium and Hyphomicrobium while increased numbers of pathogens such as Asticcacaulis, Rhizomicrobium in diseased ones may lead to replant disease. For fungi, there are 10 species with lower diversity in diseased ones, which belong to Ascomycota and Glomeromycota. In conclusion, microecological imbalance in Atractylodes rhizosphere caused by variation of the soil microbial community is considered the primary cause of replant disease. Some bacteria such as Sphingobium and some fungi including Alternaria alternate are closely related to the replant disease.

Due to the high migration capacity in agricultural soil-crop systems, cadmium (Cd) is accumulated in various crops and severely inhibits plant growth. In this study, we showed that, under Cd stress, the plant-symbiotic fungus Metarhizium robertsii reduced Cd accumulation in Arabidopsis thaliana shoots and roots by 21.8 % and 23.8 %, respectively. This is achieved by M. robertsii colonization-induced elevation of Cd efflux capacity via upregulation of three PCR genes, which is confirmed by the fact that the extent to which M. robertsii reduced Cd accumulation in the WT plants was greater than the inactivating mutants of the PCR genes. M. robertsii also alleviated Cd-induced leaf etiolation in A. thaliana by increasing the chlorophyll amount and modified plant physiological status to increase Cd stress tolerance via increasing production of catalase, peroxidase and glutathione and upregulating multiple HIPP proteins involved in sequestration of Cd. Notably, consistent with that in A. thaliana, the colonization of M. robertsii also reduced the Cd accumulation in Oryza sativa seedlings by upregulating the PCR gene OsPCR1, and increased chlorophyll amount and alleviated oxidative stress. Therefore, M. robertsii colonization reduced Cd accumulation in plants, and promoted plant growth and health by elevating Cd efflux capacity and modifying physiological status.

The aggregation of nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) particles and their limited transport ability in environmental media hinder their application in environmental remediation. In this study, the Cr(VI) removal efficiency, transport performance, and toxicity of nZVI and bentonite-modified nZVI (B-nZVI) were investigated. Compared with nZVI, B-nZVI improved the removal efficiency of Cr(VI) by 10%, and also significantly increased the transport in quartz sand and soil. Increasing the flow rate can enhance the transport of nZVI and B-nZVI in the quartz sand columns. The transport of the two materials in different soils was negatively correlated with the clay composition. Besides, modification of nZVI by bentonite could reduce toxicity to luminous bacteria (Photobacterium phosphereum T3) and ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.). Compared with Fe-EDTA, the transfer factors of nZVI and B-nZVI were 65.0% and 66.4% lower, respectively. This indicated that although iron nanoparticles accumulated in the roots of ryegrass, they were difficult to be transported to the shoots. The results of this study indicate that B-nZVI has a strong application potential in in situ environmental remediation.

Bisphenol A (BPA) has been widely used in the manufacture of polymeric materials. BPA is regarded as an endocrine disrupting chemical, posing a great threat to the public health. In this study, a bacterial strain LM-1, capable of utilizing BPA as the sole carbon and energy source under aerobic conditions, was originally isolated from an activated sludge sample. The isolate was identified as Pseudomonas sp. based on 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis. Strain LM-1 was able to completely degrade 25-100 mg/L BPA within 14-24 h, and it also exhibited high capacity for BPA degradation at a range of pH (6.0-8.0). (NH

Copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs) are widely used as a fungicide in agriculture. The application of CuO NPs in agriculture affects the growth of rice and metal accumulation in rice. However, the mechanism of CuO NPs on arsenic (As) accumulation in rice remains unclear. In this study, a hydroponic culture was produced to investigate the mechanism of the effect of 50 and 100 mg L−1 CuO NPs on As accumulation in rice. Our results showed that CuO NPs decreased As(III/V) accumulation in the roots and shoots by adsorbing As(III/V), oxidizing of As(III) on the surface, and thickening the root cell wall. The addition of CuO NPs regulated the expression of the OsNIP1, 1, OsHAC1, 1, and OsHAC4 genes, which decreased As(III) transport and promoted As(V) reduction in the roots. Moreover, when CuO NPs were co-exposed to As, a negative correlation between the concentration of Cu and As in rice was also found in our study. However, CuO NPs significantly increased Cu accumulation in rice and constrained the rice growth. In conclusion, CuO NPs might be a promising way to decrease As accumulation in rice, but the negative effects such as growth inhibition should be further considered. Therefore, the application of CuO NPs in rice plants should take a more restrained approach.

Mining activity is a growing environmental concern as it contributes to heavy metals (HMs) pollution in agricultural soils. Microbial communities play an important role in the biogeochemical cycling of HMs and have the potential to be used as bioindicators. Arsenic (As) and lead (Pb) are the most hazardous HMs and are mainly originated from mining activities. However, spatial variation in microbial community in response to As and Pb contamination in paddy soils remains overlooked. In this study, the biological and chemical properties of sixteen soil samples from four sites (N01, N02, N03, and N04) near a Pb-Zn mining site at different As and Pb levels were examined. The results showed that soil pH, total As and Pb, bioavailable As and Pb, nitrate-nitrogen (NO3−-N) and ammonia-nitrogen (NH4+-N) were the most important factors in shaping the bacterial community structure. In addition, significant correlations between various bacterial genera and As and Pb concentrations were observed, indicating their potential roles in As and Pb biogeochemical cycling. These findings provide insights into the variation of paddy soil bacterial community in soils co-contaminated with different levels of As and Pb.

Heavy metal contamination in agricultural soil and its associated risk of food safety are of great concern globally. It is therefore an urgent need to develop sustainable option to mitigate the accumulation of metals in crop plants. Here we investigated the potential of phosphorus-solubilizing fungus, Penicillium oxalicum SL2, on regulating the bioavailability of Pb in a lead (Pb) polluted soil-rice system. Our results showed that the content of Pb in rice grain was significantly decreased by ~80% with the application of P. oxalicum SL2. The competition between oxalate and phosphate for the complexation of Pb showed to be effective in mediating the bioavailability of Pb, and such impact varied with water fluctuation in paddy soil. The solubilization of phosphorus also played an important role in alleviating the dissolution of iron plaque caused by oxalic acid, which helped maintaining the biomass of iron plaque as a barrier to the uptake of Pb by root. The predominant indigenous microbial community was not affected by the inoculation with P. oxalicum SL2, suggesting it as an eco-friendly strain. Therefore, we suggest P. oxalicum SL2 as a promising fungus in enhancing the safe use of moderately Pb polluted paddy soil for safe rice.

Colloids are ubiquitous in soils, and it has been reported that colloids can act as carriers to increase the mobility of poorly soluble contaminants in subsurface environments. Addition of sulfur (S) fertilizer greatly influences on heavy metal behavior in paddy soil, while the influence of S fertilizer on Cu migration and transformation in colloids of soil pore water has not yet been studied. The influence of S fertilizer (S0 and Na2SO4) applied in paddy soils on Cu migration and transformation in colloids of soil pore water from the rice rhizosphere region was explored in this study. The speciation of Cu in colloids of soil pore water from the rice rhizosphere region was explored by advanced synchrotron-based X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy (XANES) techniques. The morphology of colloids was characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy coupled to energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX). At a depth of 20 cm, the concentration of Cu in colloids of the rhizosphere soil pore water in the control was 2.4- and 6.5- fold higher than that in treatments of S0 and Na2SO4, respectively. The colloids in soil pore water were all positively charged, ranging from 2.4 to 7.8 mV, and the size of colloids was 440–740 nm. The proportion of Fe in colloids in the rhizosphere region decreased with S fertilizer application, while the proportions of C and O increased. Sulfur fertilizer application, increased the proportion of Cu-Cysteine, while the proportion of Cu2S decreased in soil colloids. In conclusion, application of sulfur fertilizer in paddy soil decreased the Cu concentration in soil pore water and colloids of the rhizosphere region, thereby decreasing the vertical migration of Cu in soil pore water.

Particulate organic matter (POM) acts as a metals sink in soil, but only a few studies focused on the interaction of POM and heavy metals in paddy soil. The aim of this study is to investigate the interaction between POM and Copper (Cu)/Zinc (Zn). Two levels of Cu (100, 400 mg kg−1) and Zn (250, 500 mg kg−1) were used in a soil culture experiment. Our results showed that POM was porous structure and varied in size. Hydroxyl and carboxyl involved in POM adsorption of Cu and Zn. Rhizosphere effects roughen the surface of POM and enhanced the capacity of POM on heavy metals absorption. Cu-humic (26.2–33.9%) and Cu-citrate (38.5–42.4%) were dominated in POM, and Cu-goethite (41.7–57.7%), Cu-sulphide (6.6–27.6%) was dominated in soil. Rhizosphere effects decreased the proportion of organic-bond Cu along with the increasing the proportion of Cu-sulphide in POM. Addition of Cu and Zn inhibited the degradation of POM but rhizosphere effects promoted. Carbon content was increased in POM by heavy metal and rhizosphere effects. Our findings indicated that POM tended to retain the heavy metals in soil and heavy metals inhibited the degradation of POM, however, rhizosphere effects decreased the stability of POM-metals interactions.

The waterlogging environment generally results in the deposition of iron plaque on plant roots, which may impact the fate of metal-based nanoparticles. Here, we investigated the influence of iron plaque on the uptake, translocation, and transformation of copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs) in rice plants. The results show that the presence of iron plaque dramatically reduced the Cu contents in roots and shoots by 89% and 78% of those without iron plaque under 100 mg/L CuO NP treatment. Meanwhile, the Cu accumulation in plants was negatively related to the amount of iron plaque. X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) analysis demonstrated lower percentage of CuO but higher proportion of Cu(I) in shoots exposed to CuO NPs with the formation of iron plaque. Furthermore, micro X-ray fluorescence (μ-XRF) combined with μ-XANES revealed that the iron plaque in the root epidermis and exodermis consisted of goethite and ferrihydrite, which hindered the uptake of CuO NPs by roots. However, a few CuO NPs were still absorbed by roots via root hairs or lateral roots, and further translocated to shoots. But eventually, more than 90% of total Cu(II) was reduced to Cu(I)-cysteine and Cu2O in leaf veins of rice plants with iron plaque.
