Newton's centuries-old wisdom of standing on the shoulders of giants raises a crucial yet underexplored question: Out of all the prior works cited by a discovery, which one is its giant? Here, we develop a novel, discipline-independent method to identify the giant for any individual paper, allowing us to systematically examine the role and characteristics of giants in science. We find that across disciplines, about 95% of papers stand on the shoulders of giants, yet the weight of scientific progress rests on relatively few shoulders. Defining a new measure of giant index, we find that, while papers with high citations are more likely to be giants, for papers with the same citations, their giant index sharply predicts a paper's future impact and prize-winning probabilities. Giants tend to originate from both small and large teams, being either highly disruptive or highly developmental. And papers that did not have a giant but later became a giant tend to be home-run papers that are highly disruptive to science. Given the crucial importance of citation-based measures in science, the developed concept of giants may offer a useful new dimension in assessing scientific impact that goes beyond sheer citation counts.

We investigate co-sponsorship among lawmakers by applying the principal-component analysis to the bills introduced in the 20th National Assembly of Korea. The most relevant factor for co-sponsorship is their party membership, and we clearly observe a signal of a third-party system in action. To identify other factors than the party influence, we analyze how lawmakers are clustered inside each party, and the result shows significant similarity between their committee membership and co-sponsorship in case of the ruling party. In addition, by monitoring each lawmaker's similarity to the average behavior of his or her party, we have found that it begins to decrease approximately one month before the lawmaker actually changes the party membership., Comment: 19 pages, 6 figures

We propose a method for extracting hierarchical backbones from a bipartite network. Our method leverages the observation that a hierarchical relationship between two nodes in a bipartite network is often manifested as an asymmetry in the conditional probability of observing the connections to them from the other node set. Our method estimates both the importance and direction of the hierarchical relationship between a pair of nodes, thereby providing a flexible way to identify the essential part of the networks. Using semi-synthetic benchmarks, we show that our method outperforms existing methods at identifying planted hierarchy while offering more flexibility. Application of our method to empirical datasets---a bipartite network of skills and individuals as well as the network between gene products and Gene Ontology (GO) terms---demonstrates the possibility of automatically extracting or augmenting ontology from data., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

The gravity model (GM) analogous to Newton's law of universal gravitation has successfully described the flow between different spatial regions, such as human migration, traffic flows, international economic trades, etc. This simple but powerful approach relies only on the 'mass' factor represented by the scale of the regions and the 'geometrical' factor represented by the geographical distance. However, when the population has a subpopulation structure distinguished by different attributes, the estimation of the flow solely from the coarse-grained geographical factors in the GM causes the loss of differential geographical information for each attribute. To exploit the full information contained in the geographical information of subpopulation structure, we generalize the GM for population flow by explicitly harnessing the subpopulation properties characterized by both attributes and geography. As a concrete example, we examine the marriage patterns between the bride and the groom clans of Korea in the past. By exploiting more refined geographical and clan information, our generalized GM properly describes the real data, a part of which could not be explained by the conventional GM. Population dynamics with spatial information is applied to understand the spread of pests. We introduce a model describing how pests spread in discrete space. The number of pest descendants at each site is controlled by local information such as temperature, precipitation, and the density of pine trees. Our simulation leads to a pest spreading pattern comparable to the real data for pine needle gall midge in the past. We also simulate the model in two different climate conditions based on two different representative concentration pathways scenarios for the future. We observe that after an initial stage of a slow spread of pests, a sudden change in the spreading speed occurs, which is soon followed by a large-scale outbreak. We found that a future climate change causes the outbreak point to occur earlier and that the detailed spatio-temporal pattern of the spread depends on the source position from which the initial pest infection starts., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures

An individual's identity in a human society is specified by his or her name. Differently from family names, usually inherited from fathers, a given name for a child is often chosen at the parents' disposal. However, their decision cannot be made in a vacuum but affected by social conventions and trends. Furthermore, such social pressure changes in time, as new names gain popularity while some other names are gradually forgotten. In this paper, we investigate how popularity of given names has evolved over the last century by using datasets collected in Korea, the province of Quebec in Canada, and the United States. In each of these countries, the average popularity of given names exhibits typical patterns of rise and fall with a time scale of about one generation. After the Achlioptas process (AP), which yields the so-called explosive percolation, was introduced, the number of papers on percolation phenomena has been literally exploding. Most of the existing studies, however, have focused only on the nature of phase transitions, not paying proper attention to the structural properties of the resulting networks, which compose the main theme of the present paper. We compare the resulting network structure of the AP with random networks and find, through observations of the distributions of the shortest-path length and the betweenness centrality in the giant cluster, that the AP makes the network less clustered and more fragile. Such structural characteristics are more directly seen by using snapshots of the network structures and are explained by the fact that the AP suppresses the formation of large clusters more strongly than the random process does. The weighted and directed network of countries based on the number of overseas banks is analyzed in terms of its fragility to the banking crisis of one country. We use two different models to describe transmission of shocks, one local and the other global. Depending on the original source of the crisis, the overall size of crisis impacts is found to differ country by country. For the two-step local spreading model, it is revealed that the scale of the first impact is determined by the out-strength, the total number of overseas branches of the country at the origin of the crisis, while the second impact becomes more serious if the in-strength at the origin is increased. For the global spreading model, some countries named "triggers" are found to play important roles in shock transmission, and the importance of the feed-forward-loop mechanism is pointed out. We study the percolation transition in growing networks under an Achlioptas process (AP). At each time step, a node is added in the network and, with the probability $\delta$, a link is formed between two nodes chosen by an AP. We find that there occurs the percolation transition with varying $\delta$ and the critical point $\delta_c=0.5149(1)$ is determined from the power-law behavior of order parameter and the crossing of the fourth-order cumulant at the critical point, also confirmed by the movement of the peak positions of the second largest cluster size to the $\delta_c$. Using the finite-size scaling analysis, we get $\beta/\bar{\nu}=0.20(1)$ and $1/\bar{\nu}=0.40(1)$, which implies $\beta \approx 1/2$ and $\bar{\nu} \approx 5/2$. We numerically investigate the heterogeneity in cluster sizes in the two-dimensional Ising model and verify its scaling form recently proposed in the context of percolation problems [Phys. Rev. E 84, 010101(R) (2011)]. The scaling exponents obtained via the finite-size scaling analysis are shown to be consistent with theoretical values of the fractal dimension $d_f$ and the Fisher exponent $\tau$ for the cluster distribution.
