Abstract

Abstract Spastic paraplegia 47 (SPG47) is a neurological disorder caused by mutations in the adaptor protein complex 4 β1 subunit (AP4B1) gene leading to AP-4 complex deficiency. SPG47 is characterised by progressive spastic paraplegia, global developmental delay, intellectual disability and epilepsy. Gene therapy aimed at restoring functional AP4B1 protein levels is a rational therapeutic strategy to ameliorate the disease phenotype. Here we report that a single delivery of adeno-associated virus serotype 9 expressing hAP4B1 (AAV9/hAP4B1) into the cisterna magna leads to widespread gene transfer and restoration of various hallmarks of disease, including AP-4 cargo (ATG9A) mislocalisation, calbindin-positive spheroids in the deep cerebellar nuclei, anatomical brain defects and motor dysfunction, in an SPG47 mouse model. Furthermore, AAV9/hAP4B1-based gene therapy demonstrated a restoration of plasma neurofilament light (NfL) levels of treated mice. Encouraged by these preclinical proof-of-concept data, we conducted IND-enabling studies, including immunogenicity and GLP non-human primate (NHP) toxicology studies. Importantly, NHP safety and biodistribution study revealed no significant adverse events associated with the therapeutic intervention. These findings provide evidence of both therapeutic efficacy and safety, establishing a robust basis for the pursuit of an IND application for clinical trials targeting SPG47 patients.

Abstract

Abstract Background Aedes albopictus, commonly known as the Asian tiger mosquito, has become one of the most invasive mosquito species. Over the last 5 decades, it has been introduced and established in various tropical and temperate regions worldwide. First reported in Europe in 1979 in Albania and later in Italy in 1990, the species is now established in 13 European Union (EU)/European Economic Area (EEA) countries and 337 regions (2023). In Portugal, Ae. albopictus was first detected in the Algarve and Penafiel regions in 2017, followed by Alentejo in 2022 and Lisbon in 2023. This mosquito species poses a significant public health risk as a vector for numerous pathogenic viruses, including dengue, Zika, and chikungunya. Methods Aedes albopictus collected in Lisbon in 2023 were analyzed using cytochrome c oxidase I (COX) gene sequencing to understand their genetic relationships. Results Our data indicate that the Ae. albopictus mosquito populations detected in three locations in Lisbon in 2023 correspond to recent but distinct introduction events. Conclusions Although there has been no local transmission of Aedes-transmitted viruses in mainland Portugal to date, the spread of the mosquito and increased international travel increase the risk of Aedes-borne disease outbreaks. The ongoing spread of Ae. albopictus in the country and the confirmed multiple introductions in new locations raise awareness of the need to monitor mosquito vectors to control and prevent autochthonous Aedes-borne disease outbreaks. Abstract

Abstract Introduction Several clinical trials have established the efficacy and safety of dupilumab for treating atopic dermatitis (AD). However, literature remains scarce in reporting the long-term effectiveness, safety, and drug survival of dupilumab in real-world settings. This study aimed to describe the latter outcomes of dupilumab in patients with AD. Methods This Portuguese, multicentric, observational, retrospective study included consecutive adult patients with AD who initiated dupilumab between January 2019 and September 2023, with a follow-up period up to 30 months. Drug discontinuation and adverse effects data were used to estimate drug survival. Clinical assessments included the Eczema Area and Severity Index (EASI), pruritus numerical rating scale (NRS), and Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI). Results A total of 312 patients were included in the study, with 56.4% being male (median age of 30 years, range 18–83). The 30-month drug survival rate was 82.0%. During the study period, 12.5% of the sample (n = 39 patients) discontinued treatment: 7.3% due to treatment failure, 2.9% due to safety concerns, 1.3% due to complete disease control, 0.6% due to pregnancy, and 0.3% due to lack of compliance. Adverse events not leading to drug discontinuation were noted in 25.6% of the sample (n = 80). Conjunctivitis was the most frequently reported adverse event (17%), followed by facial erythema (9%). Abstract

Introdução: A peritonite continua sendo a infecção mais associada a Diálise Peritoneal (DP), causando perda desse método de Terapia Renal Substitutiva (TRS). As Micobactérias Não Tuberculosas (MNTs) são uma causa rara de peritonite em pacientes realizando DP. Embora seja raro, as principais MNTs causadoras de peritonite nos pacientes realizando DP são Mycobacterium chelonae e Mycobacterium fortuitum. Apesar de haver tratamentos bem estabelecidos para o manejo de pneumopatia causada por MNTs, há poucos dados disponíveis sobre o tratamento de infecções extrapulmonares por MNTs, principalmente peritonite. Objetivo: Relatar um Caso Clínico de Peritonite por Mycobacterium abscessus em um paciente que realizava DP. Método: Relato de caso e revisão da literatura. Resultados: Apresentamos um caso de paciente masculino, morador da zona rural do Estado de Goiás, de 65 anos de idade, que realizava DP há 02 anos, devido a Doença Renal Crônica G5 dialítica por Nefroesclerose Hipertensiva. Há 06 meses, o paciente apresentava peritonites recorrentes. Em abril de 2024, o paciente apresentou febre e dor abdominal importantes, procurando o Hospital das Clínicas-UFG (HC-UFG). Foi coletado liquido peritoneal e enviado para citologia, bacterioscopia pelo Gram e culturas; iniciado tratamento para peritonite bacteriana com Meropenem e Vancomicina. Durante a internação, a TRS do paciente foi modificada para Hemodiálise e o Cateter de Tenckhoff foi retirado. Durante a cirurgia de retirada do cateter, observou-se coleções purulentas intra-abdominais e o material foi enviado para cultura de bactérias, micobactérias e pesquisa direta de BAAR, o qual resultou positivo (+++). A cultura revelou uma MNT de crescimento rápido e o LACEN-GO identificou, por meio do MALDI-TOF, M. abscessus. Iniciado o tratamento empírico com Tigeciclina, Amicacina, Cefoxitina e Linezolida. Após a fase intensiva, o tratamento ambulatorial prosseguirá com Clofazimina, Claritromicina, Linezolida e Amicacina, sendo ajustado de acordo com o teste de suscetibilidade. Conclusão: Relatamos um caso raro de peritonite por M. abscessus, pois constatamos apenas 8 casos descritos na literatura. O avanço na medicina diagnóstica (MALDI-TOF) permitiu o diagnóstico ágil, porém a cultura é essencial para identificação da subespécie, uma vez que a subespécie M. abscessus abscessus e M. abscessus boletti implicam em pior prognóstico.

Abstract

Dimensional measurements are fundamental in microfluidic device manufacturing and performance. The main focus of this study is the measurement of the connection port sizes in microfluidic devices and components and, accordingly, the possible existence of fluid leaks determined using the flow rate error. The sizes associated with three different microfluidic systems were determined using laser interferometry and through an optical measuring instrument, with metrological traceability to national length standards. It was possible to infer the method with the greatest accuracy and lowest measurement uncertainty for characterizing this kind of system. In conclusion, the results of this work directly address the current lack of dimensions measuring methods of microfluidic components by providing a comprehensive comparison of different protocols, ultimately suggesting a preferred option for immediate application within the microfluidic industry.

Abstract

AbstractObjectives Generalized pustular psoriasis (GPP) is a rare, life-threatening skin inflammatory disorder. This study aimed to describe the disease course, treatment strategies, and healthcare utilization among patients with GPP in Portugal.Methods This multicentric, observational, retrospective study included consecutive adult patients with GPP undergoing a dermatology evaluation in different reporting institutions by experienced dermatologists between 2002 and 2023.Results A total of 59 patients were assessed. Most of the cohort had a previous history of plaque psoriasis (71%) and 83% presented at least one comorbidity. At the initial encounter, 64% of the cohort needed hospitalization. Systemic involvement was common, including fever (37%), and elevated white blood cell count and erythrocyte sedimentation rate/C-reactive protein (49%). Nearly, 73% of patients initiated systemic drugs, and 70% had to discontinue the first treatment. During the study, 98% of patients experienced at least one flare. At the last visit, 3.4% of patients had died, and 71.2% exhibited signs of active disease despite undergoing treatment.Conclusions Our study demonstrates that GPP is a chronic, debilitating condition associated with systemic involvement, frequent flares, and hospitalizations, despite receiving multiple systemic treatments. Improved disease awareness and new treatments are needed to improve patient care and decrease the burden of the disease.

13. Removal of metals and emergent contaminants from liquid digestates in constructed wetlands for agricultural reuse

Abstract

Given the increasing pressure on water bodies, it is imperative to explore sustainable methodologies for wastewater treatment and reuse. The simultaneous presence of multiples contaminants in complex wastewater, such as the liquid effluents from biogas plants, can compromise biological treatment effectiveness for reclaiming water. Vertical subsurface flow constructed wetlands were established as low-cost decentralized wastewater treatment technologies to treat the liquid fraction of digestate from municipal organic waste with metals, antibiotics, and antibiotic resistance genes, to allow its reuse in irrigation. Twelve lab-scale planted constructed wetlands were assembled with gravel, light expanded clay aggregate and sand, testing four different treating conditions (liquid digestate spiked with oxytetracycline, sulfadiazine, or ofloxacin, at 100 μg/ L, or without dosing) during 3 months. Physicochemical parameters (pH, chemical oxygen demand (COD), nutrients, metals, and antibiotics), the microbial communities dynamics (through 16S high-throughput sequencing) and antibiotic resistance genes removal (qPCR) were monitored in influents and effluents. Systems removed 85.8%–96.9% of organic matter (as COD), over 98.1% of ammonium and phosphate ions, and 69.3%–99.4% of nitrate and nitrite ions, with no significant differences between the presence or absence of antibiotics. Removal of Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Pb and Cr exceeded 82% in all treatment cycles. The treatment also removed oxytetracycline, sulfadiazine and ofloxacin over 99%, and decreased intl1, tetA, tetW, sul1 and qnrS gene copies. Nonetheless, after 3 months of ofloxacin dosing, qnrS gene started being detected. Removal processes relied on high HRT (14 days) and various mechanisms including sorption, biodegradation, and precipitation. Microbial community diversity in liquid digestate changed significantly after treatment in constructed wetlands with a decrease in the initial Firmicutes dominance, but with no clear effect of antibiotics on the microbial community structure. Removals above 85% and 94% were observed for Streptococcus and Clostridium, respectively. Results suggest that vertical subsurface flow constructed wetlands were a suitable technology for treating the liquid digestate to reuse it in irrigation agricultural systems, contributing to the circular bioeconomy concept. However, a more profound understanding of effective wastewater treatment strategies is needed to avoid antibiotic resistance genes dissemination.

Abstract

A infeção por Chlamydia trachomatis é a infeção bacteriana sexualmente transmissível mais frequente a nível global. A sua abordagem diagnóstica é desafiante pela existência de um grande número de portadores assintomáticos, e requer uma disponibilização apropriada de testes laboratoriais à população em risco. Em Portugal, a incidência da infeção tem crescido de forma consistente nos últimos anos, pelo que se impõe a necessidade de cuidados redobrados na identificação de casos, rastreio de contactos sexuais e aplicação de medidas terapêuticas eficazes. As presentes recomendações resultam da adaptação à realidade portuguesa dos consensos internacionais em termos de diagnóstico e terapêutica da infeção por Chlamydia trachomatis, e foram formuladas com o objetivo de uniformizar a gestão clínica e laboratorial dos casos sintomáticos e portadores não sintomáticos da infeção em Portugal à luz dos conhecimentos atuais.

16. Toscana Virus in Wild-Caught Sand Flies in Portugal, Findings from the National Vector Surveillance Network, 2023

Abstract

Phlebotomine sand flies play a crucial role in both human and veterinary medicine, acting as vectors for Leishmania parasites and most known phleboviruses. In Portugal, the REVIVE program, a comprehensive national surveillance network under the Ministry of Health, has included sand fly surveys since 2016. REVIVE aims to identify existing sand fly species in the country, determine which pathogens are circulating among them, and provide actionable insights for prevention and control measures when necessary. In this way, annually, from May to October, health technicians collect sand flies across mainland Portugal with CDC light traps. The collected sand flies are sent to the Centre for Vectors and Infectious Diseases Research for species identification and molecular screening of pathogens. On 21 September 2023, Toscana virus (TOSV), a well-known phlebovirus in the Mediterranean region due to its capacity to cause neurological disease, was detected in a pool of 30 sand flies collected in Algarve, the southernmost region of Portugal. A 668 bp partial sequence of the nucleoprotein gene shows similarity with TOSV strains from Spain. To our knowledge, this is the first detection of TOSV in its vector in this country, having previously only been reported in vertebrate hosts. These findings highlight the important role of ongoing surveillance efforts in monitoring and understanding the dynamics of sand fly-borne diseases in Portugal.

17. Implications between Induction Principles for $\mathbb{N}$ in Peano Arithmetic

Abstract

In introductory books about natural numbers, a common kind of assertion - often left as exercise to the reader - is that certain forms of induction on $\mathbb{N}$ (regular/ordinary, complete/strong) are equivalent one to each other and to the well-ordering principle. This means that if P1 and P2 are two of these principles, then, under all the other usually adopted postulates for the set of natural numbers (e.g., Peano axioms other than the induction axiom), P1 implies P2 and vice-versa. In this paper, we shows that, for a reasonable formalization, based on Peano arithmetic, some of the alleged implications between these principles hold only if an additional, independent condition is assumed, namely: every nonzero natural number is a successor. This condition is a consequence of the regular induction principle, but not of other induction principles. So, it is necessary to review all currently accepted implications between induction principles and similar statements in $\mathbb{N}$. From a list of 9 properties, usually considered induction principles (or equivalent to), we identify all valid and "almost valid" implications between them, as well as disprove all invalid implications by counterexamples, which consist of structures similar to Peano models, but not necessarily satisfying the Peano's induction axiom, and having an order relation adequately subordinated to the zero and the successors. Final remarks are made about what can and what cannot be proved if we weaken the assumptions about the order relation. The aim of this paper is to shed light on the need for more caution when alleging equivalence between induction principles for $\mathbb{N}$.

Abstract

Background: COVID-19 is primarily known as a respiratory illness; however, many patients present to hospital without respiratory symptoms. The association between non-respiratory presentations of COVID-19 and outcomes remains unclear. We investigated risk factors and clinical outcomes in patients with no respiratory symptoms (NRS) and respiratory symptoms (RS) at hospital admission. Methods: This study describes clinical features, physiological parameters, and outcomes of hospitalised COVID-19 patients, stratified by the presence or absence of respiratory symptoms at hospital admission. RS patients had one or more of: cough, shortness of breath, sore throat, runny nose or wheezing; while NRS patients did not. Results: Of 178,640 patients in the study, 86.4 % presented with RS, while 13.6 % had NRS. NRS patients were older (median age: NRS: 74 vs RS: 65) and less likely to be admitted to the ICU (NRS: 36.7 % vs RS: 37.5 %). NRS patients had a higher crude in-hospital case-fatality ratio (NRS 41.1 % vs. RS 32.0 %), but a lower risk of death after adjusting for confounders (HR 0.88 [0.83–0.93]). Conclusion: Approximately one in seven COVID-19 patients presented at hospital admission without respiratory symptoms. These patients were older, had lower ICU admission rates, and had a lower risk of in-hospital mortality after adjusting for confounders.

Abstract

RESUMO O presente artigo tem o objetivo de avaliar indicadores sociais e de saúde de municípios conforme a tipologia rural-urbano. Trata-se de estudo ecológico que utilizou dados oficiais de acesso público dos 853 municípios do estado de Minas Gerais, Brasil. Foram conduzidas análises descritivas e bivariadas através da Regressão de Poisson e Teste de Kruskal-Wallis. Do total de municípios, 547 (64,12%) são rurais. A maior média do Índice de Desenvolvimento Humano Municipal (IDH-M) foi observada entre os municípios urbanos. A maior média de cobertura da Estratégia Saúde da Família (ESF) foi verificada entre os municípios rurais, nos quais também foram demonstrados os melhores resultados para os indicadores de mortalidades infantil, prematura e por causas evitáveis, homogeneidade vacinal e prevalência de desnutrição. Os achados deste estudo evidenciam que uma maior cobertura da ESF está associada à ocorrência de melhores condições gerais de vida e de saúde das populações atendidas em municípios de tipologia rural. Recomenda-se aos gestores de saúde o fomento à consolidação da ESF em comunidades com contextos socioeconômicos e culturais desfavoráveis, como localidades rurais remotas e aglomerados urbanos, e o estabelecimento de ações intersetoriais com impacto positivo na saúde.

Abstract

Wound healing is a complex biological process involving a coordinated sequence of events aimed at restoring tissue integrity and function. Recent advancements in wound care have introduced novel therapies, with topical insulin application emerging as a promising strategy for promoting tissue healing. This study, involving 60 female cats (n = 60) undergoing elective spaying, aimed to evaluate the effects of topical fast-acting insulin on the healing process of surgical wounds. Each surgical suture was divided into two regions: the control zone (Zcr) without insulin application and the study zone (Zst), where insulin was applied topically for 10 min every 24 h over eight consecutive days. Assessment of suture healing was conducted using an adapted scale at two time points post-surgery: T1 (day 2) and T2 (day 8). Statistically significant differences were registered in the final healing scale scores between Zcr and Zst (p < 0.022), as well as for the parameter of regional fluid (p-value = 0.017). Additionally, at T2, all Zst regions exhibited wound closure, whereas Zcr did not, although not in a statistically significant manner. The observed discrepancy at T2 between the Zcr and Zst regions may suggest a potential benefit of utilizing insulin. No side effects resulting from the insulin topical application performed by the tutors were recorded in the Zst suture group. This study represents the first exploration of the benefits of topical insulin application for surgical wound healing in cats.

Panicum virgatum and Pennisetum alopecuroides, two non-food bioenergy crops, were evaluated for their capacity to phyto-manage trace metals (Pb, Zn, Ni, Fe, Mn, Co, Cr, and Cu) from municipal solid waste digestate after its application to a marginal soil. For that, 90-day vertical soil column mesocosm (columns with 0.6 × 0.2 m) experiments were carried out to assess 1) the impact of digestate application on the health of marginal soil, 2) plant effect on digestate-borne trace metals’ mobility along the soil profile (measuring total metal levels and fractionation in different soil layers by atomic absorption spectroscopy, and 3) plant growth performance and trace metal (Pb, Zn, and Cu) uptake capacity. The results showed that trace metals were mostly confined in the 0–0.2 m soil horizon over the course of the experimental period, migrating from the digestate-amended soil layer (0–0.1 m) to the layer underneath (0.1–0.2 m) within the first 21 days and remaining stable afterward. No evidence of the trace metals’ mobility to deeper soil layers was detected. Migration of trace metals was reduced in the presence of P. virgatum and P. alopecuroides, suggesting a phytoremediation (phytostabilization) effect. For both plant species, no trace metal accumulation in the roots was observed (bioconcentration factor 1). The growth of both plants was positively affected by municipal solid waste digestate application, which also improved soil quality (increased concentration of total organic carbon and available phosphorus, as well as cation exchange capacity and water holding capacity).

Abstract

Background: Home hospitalization (HH) is an alternative to conventional hospitalization, but literature data about bacterial skin infections treated in this setting is sparse. Objectives: The objective is to characterize the demographic and clinical features of the population admitted with acute bacterial dermo-hypodermitis (ABDH) in a HH unit; to evaluate if this model can be a safe alternative to hospital care; and to assess patients’ global satisfaction regarding their HH experience. Methods: Retrospective analysis of clinical data related to episodes of ABDH admitted to the HH unit of our institution in 7 years (2015-2022). A phone questionnaire was then applied for the evaluation of patients’ global satisfaction about HH. Results: We included 88 patients with a mean age of 66.6 years. Seventy-one (81%) were admitted directly from the emergency department and 16 (18%) from hospital wards. Forty-five (51%) had at least three associated comorbidities. Local complications occurred in 21 patients (24%) and systemic complications in 7 (8%). Eight patients (9%) were transferred back to hospital care during their HH and only 1 patient (1%) was readmitted after 3 months of discharge. The mean duration of HH was 13.8 days, and the mean duration of antibiotic treatment was 14.6 days. Regarding patients’ satisfaction, 41 participants (84%) rated home care with the maximum grade of satisfaction. For the participants with previous hospital stays (n = 39), 27 (69%) preferred HH to in-hospital care. Conclusion: This study suggests that, even though the population with ABDH admitted to HH is aged and has a high prevalence of comorbidities, HH is a safe and effective alternative to hospital care in the case of stable disease. It seems also to be associated with high rates of patient’ satisfaction.

Abstract

Apicotermitinae are soldierless termites highly abundant in tropical forests. The taxonomy of this subfamily is based on characters of worker cast and winged forms when present. However, the procedures necessary to dissect termite workers to observe their external and internal morphological characteristics are not well detailed in any study. Here, we describe a step-by-step protocol for worker dissection of soldierless termite species. We suggest the use of Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) for cleaning and visualization of the gizzard and enteric valve, and glycerin to remove tergites and sternites and describe in detail the dissection of the gizzard and enteric valve, and how visualize the insertion of Malpighian tubules.

Abstract

Micobactérias Não Tuberculosas (MNT) são relacionadas, predominantemente, à infecção do trato respiratório inferior em pacientes com lesão pulmonar e histórico de tuberculose pulmonar (TB). Os agentes etiológicos mais comuns são do complexo Mycobacterium avium, Mycobacterium kansassi e Mycobacterium abscessus. No entanto, novas MNTs, descritas como causa de doença pulmonar, possuem poucos dados referentes aos seus diagnósticos, tratamentos e desfechos como no caso de Mycobacterium nebraskense, patógeno descrito pela primeira vez em pacientes do Centro Médico Universitário de Nebraska. Temos como objetivo apresentar o caso de um homem, 70 anos, proveniente de Goiânia, Goiás, Brasil, com história de tosse produtiva e hemoptise de longa data. Negava febre e dispneia. Antecedente de TB adequadamente tratada há 12 anos, com sequelas bronquiectasias. Baseado em cultura prévia com crescimento de Micobacteria Não Tuberculosa de crescimento lento, grupo II de Runyon, encontrava-se em tratamento empírico com Rifampicina, Claritromicina, Etambutol e Estreptomicina há 15 meses. Tomografia computadorizada de tórax: opacificação subtotal do lobo inferior direito, bronquiectasias varicosas e císticas de permeio, de aspecto fibroatelectásico. Escarro da admissão identificou Mycobacterium nebraskense em cultura, sensível à Claritromicina e Sulfametoxazol+Trimetoprim, resistência intermediária à Amicacina e Moxifloxacina e resistência à Rifampicina e Ciprofloxacina. Trocado esquema para Sulfametoxazol+Trimetoprim, Claritromicina e Moxifloxacina. Após 1 mês paciente já apresentava remissão dos sintomas de tosse com expectoração e hemoptise. Após os 2 meses nova cultura do escarro veio negativa. Com 2 meses do uso do esquema, houve piora da função renal e em avaliação conjunta com a equipe de nefrologia optou-se pela suspensão dos 3 antimicrobianos. Em seguimento, paciente assintomático após 11 meses de suspensão da terapia empírica e dirigida por cultura. Testes de sensibilidade realizados para Mycobacterium nebraskense demostra sensibilidade para a maioria dos antimicrobianos atribuídos às MNTs, com descrição de resistência ao Etambutol. Em nosso caso houve sensibilidade para Claritromicina e Sulfametoxazol/Trimetoprim, o que nos leva a crer que sempre que possível os macrolídeos devem fazer parte do esquema terapêutico para esse patógeno.

Abstract

The digitisation of administrative tasks and processes is a reality nowadays, translating into added value such as agility in process management, or simplified access to stored data. The digitisation of processes of decision-making in collegiate bodies, such as Academic Councils, is not yet a common reality. Voting acts are still carried out in person, or at most in online meetings, without having a real confirmation of the vote of each element. This is particularly complex to achieve in remote meeting scenarios, where connection breaks or interruptions of audio or video streams may exist. A new digital platform was already previously proposed. It considered decision-making, by voting in Academic Councils, to be supported by a system that guarantees the integrity of the decisions taken, even when meeting online. Our previous work mainly considered the overall design. In this work, we bettered the design and specification of our previous proposal and describe the implemented prototype, and validate and discuss the obtained results.

Embora a Assembleia Geral da ONU tenha declarado 2021 como o Ano Internacional para a Eliminação do Trabalho Infantil, a realidade do Brasil é que os estudos acerca do fenômeno podem estar defasados. O presente artigo tem por objetivo apresentar informações acerca do trabalho infantil, constantes nas principais bases de dados utilizadas em estudos sobre o tema – Censo e Pnad’s do Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística (IBGE) - para em seguida apresentar informações de bases de dados oficiais alternativas a serem consultadas para o aprofundamento do estudo do fenômeno – Sistema de Avaliação da Educação Básica do Instituto Nacional de Estudos e Pesquisas Educacionais Anísio Teixeira (INEP) - de modo que seja possível analisar a relação entre estas diferentes fontes de informação; a utilização de diferentes metodologias de coleta; os prós e os contras da utilização de cada uma delas e da utilização destas em análises comparativas. Enquanto o Censo e as Pnad´s são respondidos pelos responsáveis pelo domicílio, o questionário Saeb é obrigatório para as escolas públicas e são respondidos pelas próprias crianças e adolescentes. O que faz do Saeb um banco de informações tão importante quanto o IBGE para a compreensão e enfrentamento do problema.
