It is essential for the advancement of science that researchers share, reuse and reproduce each other’s workflows and protocols. The FAIR principles are a set of guidelines that aim to maximize the value and usefulness of research data, and emphasize the importance of making digital objects findable and reusable by others. The question of how to apply these principles not just to data but also to the workflows and protocols that consume and produce them is still under debate and poses a number of challenges. In this paper we describe a two-fold approach of simultaneously applying the FAIR principles to scientific workflows as well as the involved data. We apply and evaluate our approach on the case of the PREDICT workflow, a highly cited drug repurposing workflow. This includes FAIRification of the involved datasets, as well as applying semantic technologies to represent and store data about the detailed versions of the general protocol, of the concrete workflow instructions, and of their execution traces. We propose a semantic model to address these specific requirements and was evaluated by answering competency questions. This semantic model consists of classes and relations from a number of existing ontologies, including Workflow4ever, PROV, EDAM, and BPMN. This allowed us then to formulate and answer new kinds of competency questions. Our evaluation shows the high degree to which our FAIRified OpenPREDICT workflow now adheres to the FAIR principles and the practicality and usefulness of being able to answer our new competency questions.

This paper deals with the determinants of education-job match for higher-education graduates, using a logistic regression model to identify explanatory variables related to sociodemographic, academic trajectory and institutional characteristics. The empirical analysis is based on an anonymous online questionnaire administered to a sample of graduates, from 2014 to 2019, in Portuguese institutions, of which about five hundred observations were made. Although the boundaries between universities and polytechnics are less obvious today, there are still some differences between the two higher-education subsystems regarding education-job match. The main ones are related to the field of study, gender, and the need to move away from home to study and work. Factors that improve the probability of education-job matching, common to both subsystems, were also found, such as having i) studied ‘social sciences, commerce, and law’ and ‘engineering, manufacturing and construction’, ii) attained good final grades, and iii) participated in extracurricular activities involving complementary training.

Abstract To control the health impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, governments implemented various restrictive policies, such as stay-at-home orders and restrictions on internal movement, which had adverse effects on consumption and, consequently, on international trade. This was observed even for products intensively traded and minimally impacted in terms of production, such as wine. Thus, to work towards a better awareness of future crises, this study assesses the impact of government policy responses to COVID-19 on the international wine trade. A gravity model, a benchmark approach for studying the determinants of trade, is estimated using monthly data for 20 exporting countries and 214 potential importing countries. The findings suggest that, ceteris paribus, the value of wine export flows was inversely related to the intensity of government policy response in importing countries due to lower demand provoked by restrictive measures. This effect was considerably reduced, however, concerning wines coming from the Old World, which are inferred to be more resilient, a factor primarily attributed to their higher share of wines exported with geographical indications. On the other hand, only the exports from Old World countries were negatively influenced by restrictions on internal movements in the exporting country, which reflects a business model with a complex supply chain in which several intermediaries are involved, thus weakening the direct linkage between wine producers and consumers.

Although coronary angiography (CA) is the gold standard for coronary allograft vasculopathy (CAV) screening, non-invasive modalities have arisen as potential alternatives, such as coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA). CCTA also quantifies plaque burden, which may influence medical treatment. From January 2021 to April 2022, we prospectively included heart transplant recipients who performed CCTA as a first-line method for CAV detection in a single center. Clinical, CCTA, and CA data were collected. 38 patients were included, 60.5% men, aged 58±14 years. The most frequent cause of transplantation was dilated cardiomyopathy (42.1%), and the median graft duration was 10 years [interquartile range (IQR) 9]. The median left ventricle ejection fraction was 61.5% (IQR 6). The median calcium score was 17 (IQR 231) and 32 patients (84.2%) proceeded to CCTA: 7, 24, and 1 patients had a graded CAV of 0, 1, and 2, respectively. Most patients (37.5%) had both calcified and non-calcified plaques, and the median number of affected segments was 2 (IQR 3). The remaining six patients had extensive coronary calcification, so CA was performed: 4 had CAV1, 1 had CAV2, and 1 had CAV3. During follow-up (12.2±4.2 months), there were neither deaths nor acute coronary syndromes. After CCTA, therapeutic changes occurred in about 10 (26.3%) of patients, mainly related to anti-lipid intensification; such changes were more frequent in patients with diabetes after heart transplant. In this cohort, CCTA led to therapeutic changes in about one-quarter of patients; more studies are needed to assess how CCT may guide therapy according to plaque burden.

This study explored the view that distributors have towards the most valued wine attributes by consumers in the US market, applying the discrete choice experiments technique. Furthermore, to explore the extent to which the distributors’ perspective may reflect consumers’ preferences, the results are analyzed considering previous evidence with consumers in the same market. The results from a scaled multinomial logit, mixed logit and generalized logit models reveal similarities with consumer studies’ findings, especially for the influence of medals/awards, the origin of the wine, grape variety, and price, and it also identifies possible trends in the market. This evidence suggests that data collected using the knowledge and experience of wine distributors generates valuable information through a smaller sample at a lower cost than through applying consumer surveys, which is relevant in large markets with a higher number of consumers.

The moving image and the visual culture lay down a field of references between imaginary and projected image. Rite of Spring (a Manoel de Oliveira feature film from 1963) is a good exemple of this relationship. If, by one hand, it inaugurates inquisitive tools that will turn into recurring issues in the author’s vision of cinema, by stressing the distance between image and médium, by the theatricality of the performance and by the operative relationship constructed between rhythm and film editing, on the other hand, this film is also an excelent essay on the action of images, when confronted with the christian imaginary that we inherited through visual culture and ritual. This way, we propose to analyze Manoel de Oliveira’s Rite of Spring as a device for the comprehension of life’s theatricallity, and as game of mirrors with our mental images as well

ABSTRACT: Currarino triad is a rare syndrome, with less than 250 cases reported, and it includes a combination of sacrococcigeal bony abnormalities, anorectal malformations and the presence of a presacral mass. Here we present a case of a 48-year-old male patient with history of severe chronic constipation, who was incidentally diagnosed with a presacral during imagiological investigation, which was histologically proven to be a neurendocrine tumor.

Aim of study: This study aims to analyse how psychological factors related to the Covid-19 lockdown affected the frequency of wine consumption among Iberian consumers. Area of study: To achieve this goal, we used data collected from an online survey in Europe comprising 4489 observations from Portuguese and Spanish samples. Material and methods: Using an ordered probit model, we analysed the wine consumption frequency as a function of a set of explanatory variables related to psychological factors and also sociodemographic variables, motivation-related variables and consumption characterisation. Main results: For Spanish respondents the fear of isolation was a decisive factor in increasing the probability of a higher frequency of wine consumption. Meanwhile, in Portugal, the fear of an economic crisis was the psychological factor leading to a higher consumption frequency. Research highlights: In both countries, psychological factors influenced the frequency of wine consumption during the lockdown due to Covid-19. However, the impact of the Covid-19 crisis has been felt differently in Spain and Portugal. Differences can be observed in both psychological and behavioural attitudes that have influenced the frequency of wine consumption and could also indicate significant cultural differences.

Port wine industry can be considered as a case study of the effects of globalization, expressed at diverse levels, such as changes in habits of consumption and lifestyles, that lead to a decrease of consumption rates in the last years. The aim of this paper is to understand how to reverse the downward trend, proposing guidelines to increase Port wine competitiveness in the market. Therefore, the core of this research is to compare perception of wine firms and consumers, regarding the actual image and consumption of Port wine. A qualitative approach was applied including In-depth interviews with the directors of companies (n=20) and two focus groups with young consumers (n=15). Data were transcribed verbatim and content analysed. Results showed convergence between perception of wine firms and consumers regarding Port wine needs to increase its competitiveness in the market. Three main dimensions emerged, as the most important areas to develop: 1) promotion; 2) product adaptation to the market and 3) focus on innovation, mostly regarding the sensory characteristics of beverage, the packaging and the communication to consumers. This study aims to contribute to the growing field of wine marketing, which in special Port wine lacks research.

Price is a core component of both wine firms’ and consumers’ decision-making and so there has been a lot of analysis of the determinants of wine price. Most of the research has used the hedonic price function and assumed that the wine market is homogeneous with respect to both distribution channel and price segments. In this paper, a hedonic price function is estimated using data from a specialist retailer and a large supermarket, i.e., retailers in two different consumer market segments, niche and mass market, respectively. We conclude that the wine market is heterogeneous, and the importance of the various price determinants differs between distribution channels and, in the case of the specialist retailer, throughout the conditional statistical distribution of the price. This result may help the wine companies to place themselves in the market value chain.

Growing teratoma syndrome is a rare condition described in both testicular and ovarian cancer. We present a case of a 26-year-old male with known mixed germ cell tumor which exhibited new and progressive secondary lesions during imaging surveillance, later to be histologically characterized as teratomas.

The wine market is very heterogeneous and complex, being the knowledge of the behaviour and attitudes of consumers a key tool to design efficient marketing plans, namely in countries that are traditionally wine producers and consumers, such as Portugal. In this country, Port wine is an economic and cultural icon, but, in the last decade, total sales have been decreasing. Despite this trend the domestic consumption has been gaining relevance and therefore a focus to reverse the negative cycle of total sales. The main goal of this paper is to analyse the profile and behaviour of domestic Port wine consumers, identifying homogeneous market segments. For this purpose, an online survey was applied and random sample of 678 Portuguese Port wine consumers was collected. Using multivariate statistical techniques, three profiles of purchasers/consumers emerged: experienced, less experienced and inexperienced consumers. This segmentation shows that Port wine consumers can be grouped according to their involvement with the product, consumption occasion and price they are willing to pay. In addition to the academic contribution of wine market segmentation, the paper provides useful insights to be used in designing marketing plans, both by institutional stakeholders and wineries.

This study analyses recent trends (2006-2018) in Port and Douro wine exports and estimates their macroeconomic determinants. The results of the gravity equation reveal that the purchasing power in importing countries is the most important export determinant of Port and Douro wines. Therefore, in order to increase exports, the strategic decision-makers concerned with the industry should pay special attention to the markets in wealthier countries or with a high potential for economic growth, taking into account issues such as market access, adaptation to the market to wine consumption, and regulation.

Using export market shares as a measure of international competitiveness, this paper studies wine exports in terms of propensity and intensity. Based on data for the period 1999-2014, a two-part fractional regression model is applied. The results suggest that for importing countries GDP per capita, their own wine production, and EU membership have a positive effect on the probability of importing wine but tend to evolve inversely to market shares, as taste for variety becomes more important. Additionally, export propensity is positively affected by regional trade agreements, common language, similarity of religious culture, wine production in the exporting country, and the exporting country being from the Old World, while export intensity is boosted by common language and wine production in the exporting country. Bilateral distance has a negative effect on both margins of trade.

Export activities have become crucial to firms’ competitiveness, with determinants of export performance being a challenging field of research, since there is no consensus regarding the explained and explanatory variables or on the econometric methods to be used. Using a panel data of Portuguese wine firms, this paper aims to contribute to this debate, combining both resource- and institutional-based views of the firm. This paper tries to overcome the methodological hurdle, addressing sample selection issues and considering the fractional response nature of export performance. Given the pros and cons of each econometric approach, the Heckman selection model, the fractional probit model and the two-part fractional response model are estimated, and the results compared. From a public policy perspective, the results show that policies that promote wine firm size, labor productivity and wine promotion in third countries have a positive impact on export performance at firm-level. Age does not appear as a key factor on the internationalization of Portuguese wine firms.

This paper investigates the presence of spatial spillovers in firms’ productive (in)efficiency. For this purpose, a spatial stochastic frontier model is specified and estimated, accounting for spatial dependence and persistent and transient (in)efficiency. This approach is applied to a panel dataset from 2014 to 2019 of Portuguese wineries. Apart from the traditional input and output quantities used in the estimation of a production function, the novelty of this study is the inclusion of information on the firms’ exact location, which allows incorporating the neighboring dependence in the productive efficiency analysis. Empirical findings show that despite the Portuguese wineries’ technological positive dependence on spatial closeness for both inputs and outputs, the geographic closeness is not strong enough to provide overall productive efficiency gains.

The Demarcated Douro Region is one of the oldest demarcated wine regions, and the largest and the most heterogeneous mountainous wine region in the world. Viticulture covers 44,000 ha, and since 2001 an area covering 24,600 ha has been designated as the most representative territory of the Demarcated Douro Region, the Alto Douro Wine Region. This region is included in the list of World Heritage Sites as an evolving and living cultural landscape. The Demarcated Douro Region fits the terroir model, as its economy is based on wine (Porto wine and Douro still wines), supplemented by tourism. During recent decades, both activities have witnessed deep and structural changes, with consequences for the maintenance of the traditional characteristics of the cultural landscape that drove the UNESCO classification. With this issue in mind, the goal of this paper is to describe the recent evolution of the main economic activities of the Demarcated Douro Region. In particular, we aim to deepen the knowledge about the preferences of Portuguese visitors towards the Alto Douro Wine Region and its attributes, thus determining those that deserve preservation and, consequently, public attention. The results of a mixed logit model show that visitors assign highest utility to the preservation of vineyards supported by schist walls, followed by the agglomerations and the characteristic mosaic nature of the landscape. Additionally, respondents who are richer, employed, better educated, better informed regarding the culture of the site and more influenced by the listing are more willing to participate in preserving the cultural heritage of the region.

The Demarcated Douro Region (DDR) dates from 1756, when it was recognized as one of the first demarcated regions in the world. The DDR economic activities fit the terroir model and are based on wine and tourism. Both activities have witnessed deep and structural changes along the last three decades, with influence in the current socio-economic performance of the region. The objective of this paper is to present the recent evolution of the DDR wine filiere and tourism. The Port wine continues to be the star product of DDR, with almost 90% being exported. However, along the last decade the still wines evolved from being almost unknown to a position of a national and international recognition in market niches. The tourism in Douro region is connected to the wine filiere and tends to be structured under two dominant influences: the river and the terroir.

Since 2008 Portugal began to be influenced by a financial crisis, public budget troubles and an economic crisis. In line with the new economic paradigm within the EU, is publicly acknowledged that the overcoming of this crisis should be based on the production of transactional goods, where the agricultural sector deserves a special attention. The objective of this paper is to analyze the economic role of the Portuguese agricultural marketing cooperatives, including an overview of the Portuguese agricultural sector, the typology of Portuguese cooperatives and position in the agro food chain, the institutional environment, internal governance and performance of the agricultural cooperatives.

This paper aims firstly to examine the innovation within the cluster of a traditional European wine region (Region of the Douro - Portugal), characterized by the so-called model of terroir in wine, an economic structure supported by a large number of growers, small and medium-sized wineries and high regulation throughout the productive chain, which clearly emerges the question of tradition versus innovation. This research used grounded theory method and the results show that traditional companies remain in a region whose legislation hinders the radical innovations, but at the same time, ensures quality values. There is a transfer of traditional values of a specific product, the port wine, for new products recently launched in the market, and simultaneously a transfer of value-added of the port wine to the value of family ties with the production process and with the land of the Douro Region.

The Alto Douro Wine Region (ADW) was listed by UNESCO in 2001 as a living and evolving cultural landscape. Besides the physical diversity of the landscape, there is amultiplicity of actors involved in ADW preservation defi ned at three levels: i) instruments and public entities (in terms of land management); ii) property rights defi nition and liability management (asset level); and iii) stakeholders (as regard the preservation effects). In this paper, we defi ne the relevant attributes to formulate a program to preserve and safeguard the ADW, based on the evidence suggested in a previous study, on the results of a pretest and using information from public discussions and meetings with experts. The research carried out shows that the attributes to consider are: (a) terraced vineyards supported by schist walls, (b) landscape mosaic with agricultural diversity, including plots planted with and bordered by traditional crops, (c) traditional agglomerations and built heritage and,(d) a price, expressed by an annual tax increase per household.

La globalización está poniendo en cuestión la esencia de la gobernanza cooperativa y su estructura societaria, sobre todo en los países del Sur de Europa, como Portugal, donde muchos productores están organizados en cooperativas agrícolas tradicionales y de estilo mediterráneo. Este trabajo analiza los efectos de las variables de gobierno y control relacionados con el tamaño sobre dos indicadores de comportamiento alternativos: los ingresos transferidos a los miembros/socios y la estructura del capital. Los resultados sugieren que estas cooperativas atraviesan dificultades para mantenerse sostenibles en un mercado de vino global y más competitivo si siguen, en esencia, una política de máximo retorno al socio, reduciendo su capacidad para de mejorar la estructura de su deuda y capacidad para financiar inversiones más rentables, aunque con mayor riesgo, a largo plazo.

Cultural assets are increasingly being considered in the policies of social and economic development of territories due to spillover effects. However, since cultural assets are not transacted in the market, their use value should be calculated using indirect methods of evaluation or non market techniques. In this paper, the travel cost method was chosen to estimate the curve of demand in the Museum of Lamego which constitutes an important cultural item of the Alto Douro Wine Region, classified by UNESCO in 2001, as a world heritage site – a living and evolving cultural landscape. The results of the application of the Poisson model confirm the expected, that is, the probability of visiting the museum is positively influenced by the educational level, female gender and negatively by the travel cost.

In this paper we trace the emergence of a specific case of cultural policy: the example chosen is a UNESCO World Heritage site, namely the Alto Douro Wine Region (ADW) a portuguese living and evolving cultural landscape. In order to contextualize the particularities of the means that have been adopted for the management of the ADW, we use Throsbys (2001) typology of most commonly-used cultural heritage policy instruments. Additionally we draw on the arguments that are frequently used to support public intervention in this sphere. We conclude that ADWs management policy should: 1) use binding agreements to operationalize a range of measures that compensate farmers who become providers of cultural products; 2) strengthen education and information so as to promote greater physical access and personal appreciation of the ADWs cultural goods and services; and 3) formulate an integrated set of social policies able to mitigate the negative socio-demographic trends that characterize the region and its population.

Este artigo tem por principal objetivo analisar a problemática da inovação no âmbito do cluster de uma região vitivinícola europeia tradicional (Região Demarcada do Douro – Portugal), caracterizada pelo chamado modelo vitivinícola do terroir, uma estrutura econômica suportada por um elevado número de viticultores, pequenas e médias empresas vinícolas e elevada regulação ao longo de toda a cadeia produtiva, em que, claramente, emerge a questão da tradição versus inovação. A pesquisa utilizou o método Grounded Theory, e os resultados evidenciam uma concordância de as empresas permanecerem numa região tradicional, cuja legislação dificulta as inovações radicais, mas que, concomitantemente, assegura os valores da qualidade. Verifica-se uma transferência de valores tradicionais de um produto específico, o vinho do Porto, para os novos produtos lançados recentemente no mercado; e, simultaneamente, uma transferência do valor agregado do vinho do Porto para o valor do vínculo da família com o processo produtivo e com as terras da Região Demarcada do Douro.

Le Portugal est un pays à vocation essentiellement vinicole: il occupe la 5ème place du rang de l’Union Européenne et la 9 ème place du rang mondial. Le vignoble s’étend par tout le territoire national, cultivé en petites parcelles (1,3 hectares, la moyenne) ayant 300 crus différents, quelques uns d’entre eux uniques au monde possédant d’innombrables potentialités pour la production de vins différenciés. Dû essentiellement au porto, le vin est le produit agricole portugais le plus exporté, la production nationale étant de 7 millions d’hectolitres et la consommation étant de 5 millions d’hectolitres. Cet article présente une radiographie globale du secteur, organisée au niveau de la filière et du complexe. Malgré les faiblesses actuelles, à l’aide d’opportunités stratégiquement maîtrisées, le secteur vinicole portugais pourra atteindre une forte compétitivité, dans une économie ouverte et globale.

Dependendo a competitividade de um país do valor e crescimento sustentado da produtividade das organizações económicas que integram a sua economia, para complemento da informação proporcionada por indicadores parciais de performance, é de grande importância conseguirse um indicador capaz de captar as fontes e aferir de forma sintética, objectiva e adequada a evolução da produtividade das unidades como um todo. Este indicador é o índice de produtividade total dos factores (PTF), susceptível de ser quantificado através dos números índices de Malmquist, Fischer ou Törnqvist, prestando-se neste texto especial atenção ao primeiro. O índice PTF de Malmquist é calculado com base em funções distância em relação à função fronteira, recorrendo, para a estimação desta, a métodos deterministas não paramétricos (DEA) ou a funções estocásticas paramétricas (AFE). Para ilustrarmos o processo de cálculo, aplicamos os dois métodos a um panel equilibrado de 26 explorações agrícolas localizadas no Planalto Mirandês para o período 1990-97.

Neste trabalho é avaliada a eficiência produtiva anual, perspectivada na óptica do custo, das caixas de crédito agrícola mútuo (CCAM) pertencentes ao sistema integrado de crédito agrícola mútuo (SICAM), através da utilização de uma fronteira custo estocástica. Para a estimação da eficiência produtiva global, ou eficiência custo, as CCAM são assumidas como empresas multiproduto que comercializam dois produtos, crédito e outras aplicações financeiras, cujo objectivo é a minimização do custo variável, que é igual à soma do dispêndio com a compra de três factores produtivos, depósitos, trabalho e outros materiais. Os índices de eficiência, calculados com base numa função custo translogarítmica previamente estimada, sugerem que o SICAM pode melhorar a sua "performance" económica se todas as CCAM operarem de forma tão eficiente como as observações de melhor prática. Para um aumento dos níveis de eficiência poderá contribuir uma evolução positiva do rácio activo líquido por trabalhador, do grau de conversão dos depósitos em crédito e da autonomia financeira.
