Abstract

In this presentation, we will describe the development of a proof of concept (POC) which will allow the linking of publications deposited in HAL, the French open archive (https://hal.archives-ouvertes.fr/) developed by the CCSD (center for direct scientific communication https://www.ccsd.cnrs.fr/en/home/) and data or datasets deposited in NAKALA (https://nakala.fr/) developed by Huma-num (https://www.huma-num.fr/), the French research data repository for SSH data. We will highlight how we have addressed some technical issues in order to build the POC, and the possible re-use of the results of its achievement.

Abstract

This presentation follows a workshop session that was held at the beginning of the DARIAH Annual Event 2023 in Budapest, HU. An informational booklet, designed by Tom Gheldof, details each of the DH Masters which we were able to investigate. It helped nourish our discussions during the workshop and thus is included as well. Postgraduate education in Digital Humanities (DH) has often led to careers for students in either the research or cultural heritage sector. Traditionally, the relationship between industry and Cultural Heritage institutions has typically been conceived as a collaboration to leverage funding mechanisms and develop projects to pursue a common interest, such as a technical innovation, or a knowledge sharing endeavour. The skills acquired within Digital Humanities (DH) taught postgraduate degrees are interdisciplinary and therefore transferable by their very nature, something that has been recognised among larger multinational companies. Indeed, a strong humanities education and familiarity with our methods can be an asset for business. Best practices for data stewardship and data management are similar whether one focuses on cultural heritage data, or business data, even if there are particularities. Yet among small and medium enterprises (SMEs) the proposition of employing a graduate from a field that is still in its relative infancy compared with more traditional disciplines can be seen as a risk. It therefore becomes necessary to identify the gaps, and indeed niches that rest between the current provision of training among DH scholars at a postgraduate (Masters) level, and the needs of the companies and future employers of DH graduates. Indeed, greater collaboration and fluidity between the cultural heritage and academic sphere, and that of business, via the DH alumni, can lead to greater outcomes for both, as these students can bring the best practices of both sectors in their future careers, thereby enriching both sectors and establishing interpersonal links (and the collaboration that grows from these links) via their networks. In light of this, it becomes necessary to foster internships that encourage and nurture experimental data spaces between cultural heritage, industry and academia. This paper will therefore share the conversation around the relationship between taught postgraduate DH programmes and industry by presenting the outcomes of a joint working-group workshop to be held on the periphery of the DARIAH Annual Event 2023. Furthermore, it will also include the results of preparatory surveys and interviews with directors and coordinators of various DH postgraduate programmes across Europe, specifically identifying the challenges and professional issues experienced by both DH Masters directors, and their alumni. This paper addresses the following key objectives: Identify the professional challenges and (new) employment opportunities of DH postgraduate taught programmes and their alumni at the European scale. Identify the benefits such a collaboration and exchange between the two sectors can bring. Identify opportunities and good practices of internships with industry and cultural heritage institutions, and their associated challenges. Strengthen the networking opportunities between master degrees, in such a way that expertise can be mapped at a pan-Infrastructural level to share and exchange trainers and trainees in the frame of Erasmus mobilities or Erasmus Mundus programmes. Our presentation will give visibility to these outputs, as a first step in a long-term effort to improve collaboration between industry, cultural heritage institutions and academia (specifically taught postgraduate DH degrees) in the frame of research infrastructures.

6. EOSC-Pillar Use case 5 - FAIR principles in data life-cycles for Humanities

Abstract

This task aims toidentify and develop use cases based on Social Sciences and Humanities(SSH) communities engagement. In order to do that, we will rely onconsortia funded by Huma-Numand other partners from DARIAH (e.g. Italy and Germany). Another focus will be done on the link between data and publication. HAL, the French national open archive created by CCSD, provide a specific portal for SSH communities to deposit and delivertheir publications in open access. CCSD will work with Huma-Num to link publications on HAL to research data in data repositories, especiallyNakala,the data repository from Huma-Num dedicated to SSH. This case will bea model for linking with other data repositories used in SSH communities. The first step ofbuilding the relationship between the publications deposited in HAL and the data deposited in Nakalahas been taken, using the APIs available in each of the repositories. The relations thus created will be displayed, exported and harvestable. In order to be able to synchronise the relationships established in both platforms, we did the technical choice of using the MERCURE protocol and installed a MERCURE server for this purpose. Then the next steps are to be able to ensure that the links made manually between data and publicationscan be synchronisedand shared at will. Learn more

Abstract

This document describes the revised activity plan for Task 5.4 “Training modules on FAIR-oriented research data management tools and solutions”, as well as the methodology, the selected specific training themes and the type of delivered and planned events. The plan is drafted in accordance with EOSC-Pillar objective 03 (“O3 - Co-ordinate with other initiatives to achieve harmonisation across different regions, countries, and transnational research communities to build a truly inclusive EOSC”) and 04 (“O4 - Promote the uptake of FAIR data practices and services at national levels and across scientific communities and national borders”). This deliverable is an updated version of “D5.3 - Training Plan”, which was substantially changed due to the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak. Whereas the themes substantially remained the same, the methodology was strongly adapted to focus on specific scientific communities and different profiles within research performing organisations. This new methodology was supported by the collaboration with institutions and Research Infrastructures in the planning and delivery of the training events. The new approach is proved successful and indicators are reported to demonstrate the performance achieved. The objective of delivering at least 10 training courses on data management shared tools and solutions was achieved. EOSC-Pillar collaborated jointly with a number of projects, initiatives, organisations and Research Infrastructures to deliver training events and engage the EOSC community. Indicators presented in this deliverable show that EOSC-Pillar managed to train and engage more than 1000 participants between M1 and M18 since its start.

10. EOSC-Pillar MS26: Communications Proof of Concept between NAKALA and HAL

Abstract

This deliverable specifies the development of the proof of concept (POC) which will allow the linking of publications deposited in HAL (including its HAL-SHS portal), the French open archive developed by the CCSD, and data or datasets deposited in Nakaladeveloped by Huma-num, the French research data repository for SSH data. It describes the workflow to be set up between the two repositories, the creation of the bidirectional relationship between publications and data, prospection for the implementation of tools to visualize these links in the two repositories, and finally how to expose these relationships and publish them, so that they are available, findable and usable by research communities (and by all citizens).

Abstract

Through this White Paper, which gathers contributions from experts of 3D data as well as professionals concerned with the interoperability and sustainability of 3D research data, the PARTHENOS project aims at highlighting some of the current issues they have to face, with possible specific points according to the discipline, and potential practices and methodologies to deal with these issues.During the workshop, several tools to deal with these issues have been introduced and confronted with the participants experiences, this White Paper now intends to go further by also integrating participants feedbacks and suggestions of potential improvements.Therefore, even if the focus is put on specific tools, the main goal is to contribute to the development of standardized good practices related to the sharing, publication, storage and long-term preservation of 3D data.

Abstract

International audience; With this White Paper, which gathers contributions from more than 25 experts of 3D imaging, modellng and processing, as well as professionals concerned with the interoperability and sustainability of research data, the PARTHENOS project aims at laying the foundations of a comprehensive environment centered on the researchers' practices concerning 3D digital objects.The topics addressed in the document are meant to help to ensure the development of standardized good practices relating to the production, the handling, the long-term conservation and the reuse of 3D objects. Therefore, even if the focus is put on technical questions (formats, processing, and annotation), the White Paper also identifies the need to clarify the legal status of 3D objects, in order to facilitate their reuse(s) in non-research contexts, in particular in Museums.

Abstract

A comprehensive set ofPARTHENOS Guidelines to FAIRify data management and make data reusableis focusing on the topic of common policies. This compact guide offers twenty guidelines to align the efforts of data producers, data archivists and data users in humanities and social sciences to make research data as reusable as possible based upon the FAIR Principles. Each guideline has recommendations for both researchers and archives as it is recognised that different priorities may apply to each case. The guidelines result from the work of over fifty PARTHENOS project members. They were responsible for investigating commonalities in the implementation of policies and strategies for research data management and used results from desk research, questionnaires and interviews with selected experts to gather around one hundred current data management policies (including guides for preferred formats, data review policies and best practices, both formal as well as tacit).
