Search

Planets form from the same cloud of molecular gas and dust as their host stars. Confirming if planetary bodies acquire the same refractory element composition as their natal disc during formation, and how efficiently volatile elements are incorporated into growing planets, is key to linking the poorly constrained interior composition of rocky exoplanets to the observationally-constrained composition of their host star. Such comparisons also afford insight into the planet formation process. This work compares planetary composition with host-star composition using observations of a white dwarf that has accreted planetary material and its F-type star wide binary companion as a reference for the composition of the natal molecular gas and dust. Spectroscopic analysis reveals abundances of Fe, Mg, Si, Ca, and Ti in both stars. We use the white dwarf measurements to estimate the composition of the exoplanetary material and the F-type companion to constrain the composition of the material the planet formed from. Comparing planetary material to the composition of its natal cloud, our results reveal that the planetary material is depleted in moderate refractories (Mg, Si, Fe) relative to the refractory material (Ca, Ti). Grouping elements based on their condensation temperatures is key to linking stellar and planetary compositions. Fractionation during formation or subsequent planetary evolution leads to the depletion of moderate refractories from the planetary material accreted by the white dwarf. Sufficient analytical conditions for separability in composite quantum systems are very scarce and only known for low-dimensional cases. Here, we use linear maps and their inverses to derive powerful analytical conditions, providing tight bounds and extremal points of the set of absolutely separable states, i.e., states that remain separable under any global unitary transformation. Our analytical results apply to generic quantum states in arbitrary dimensions, and depend only on a single or very few eigenvalues of the considered state. Furthermore, we use convex geometry tools to improve the general characterization of the AS set given several non-comparable criteria. Finally, we present various conditions related to the twin problem of characterizing absolute PPT, that is, the set of quantum states that are positive under partial transposition and remain so under all unitary transformations., Comment: 21 pages, 5 figures

A posteriori analysis based upon a recently proposed non-dissipative large-eddy simulation framework for transcritical wall-bounded turbulence has been carried out. Due to the complexities arisen in such flows, the discretization requires kinetic-energy- and pressure-equilibrium-preservation schemes to yield stable and non-dissipative scale-resolving simulations. On the basis of this framework, the objectives are to (i) compute wall-resolved and wall-modeled large-eddy simulations of a high-pressure transcritical turbulent channel flow, and (ii) assess the thermofluid performance with respect to a direct numerical simulation. In this regard, three different subgrid-scale stress tensor models have been considered, together with models for the unresolved scales of the filtered pressure transport equation and equation of state. In terms of wall-modeling, models based on the "standard law of the wall" and velocity-temperature coupled approaches have been assessed. The results show that for the wall-resolved approaches, the subgrid-scale stress tensors examined slightly deviate from the time-averaged velocity and temperature reference profiles. In terms of bulk performance, it has been found that the Nusselt number and skin-friction coefficient are relatively well captured at the cold and hot walls, respectively. While heat transfer phenomena are fairly well reproduced, particularly the Prandtl and heat flux trends along wall-normal direction. Additionally, the wall-modeled strategies improve the recovery of first-order statistics, although they do not attain the profile in the log-law region. However, they enhance the wall metrics and the heat flux prediction. It is, thus, concluded that dedicated efforts by the research community are needed to improve the prediction accuracy of existing subgrid-scale and wall models for wall-bounded transcritical turbulence.

We present HIP 8522, a young solar twin with the lowest detected lithium, potentially a field blue straggler or the result of episodic early accretion. Its stellar parameters ($T_{\rm eff} = 5729 \pm 7$ K, $\log g = 4.532 \pm 0.016$ dex, $\rm{[Fe/H]} = 0.005 \pm 0.010$ dex, $v_{t} = 1.08 \pm 0.02$ km s$^{-1}$) and chemical composition were determined via spectroscopic equilibrium using high resolution spectra ($R = 60~000-165~000$). The age of HIP 8522 was estimated to be an upper limit of $<$1 Gyr through isochrone fitting and was further confirmed using chemical clocks. Spectral synthesis of the lithium line at $\sim$6707.8 \AA\ yielded an upper lithium abundance limit of $A(\rm{Li}) <$ 0.8 dex. This value is unusually low for solar twins of similar age, which typically have $A(\rm{Li})$ values ranging from 2.0 to 3.3 dex, suggesting that $\sim$2 dex of lithium is missing. We investigate various scenarios, such as planet engulfment, sub-stellar mergers, and extra mixing. However, two distinct hypotheses provide plausible explanations for the significant depletion of lithium: one suggests that HIP 8522 is a field blue straggler formed by the merger of a close binary, while the other proposes that HIP 8522 experienced early episodic accretion. The young solar twin HIP 8522 presents an exceptional opportunity to rigorously test stellar evolution models and gain crucial insights into the internal mixing mechanisms responsible for the significant destruction of lithium.

Mixing and heat transfer rates are typically enhanced when operating at high-pressure transcritical turbulent flow regimes. The rapid variation of thermophysical properties in the vicinity of the pseudo-boiling region can be leveraged to significantly increase the Reynolds numbers and destabilize the flow. The underlying physical mechanism responsible for this destabilization is the presence of a baroclinic torque mainly driven by large localized density gradients across the pseudo-boiling line. As a result, the enstrophy levels are enhanced compared to equivalent low-pressure cases, and the flow physics behavior deviates from standard wall turbulence characteristics. In this work, the nature of this instability is carefully analyzed and characterized by means of linear stability theory. It is found that, at isothermal wall-bounded transcritical conditions, the non-linear thermodynamics exhibited near the pseudo-boiling region propitiates the laminar-to-turbulent transition with respect to sub- and super-critical thermodynamic states. This transition is further exacerbated for non-isothermal flows even at low Brinkman numbers. Particularly, neutral curve sensitivity to Brinkman numbers and perturbation profiles of dynamic and thermodynamic unstable modes based on modal and non-modal analysis, which trigger the early flow destabilization, confirm this phenomenon. Nonetheless, a non-isothermal setup is a necessary condition for transition when operating at low-Mach/Reynolds-number regimes. In detail, on equal Brinkman number, turbulence transition is accelerated and algebraic growth enhanced in comparison to isothermal cases. Consequently, high-pressure transcritical setups result in larger kinetic energy budgets due to larger production rates and lower viscous dissipation.

We analyse high-resolution ESPaDOnS/CFHT spectra of 20 very metal-poor stars ([Fe/H]~$<-2.0$) in the solar neighbourhood (within $\sim2$ kpc) selected to be on planar orbits (with a maximum height of $\lesssim4$ kpc). Targets include 11 prograde and 9 retrograde stars, spanning a wide range of eccentricities ($0.20-0.95$). Their chemical abundances are consistent with those observed in the Galactic halo but show a smaller spread, with no notable difference between progrades and retrogrades. This suggests a common chemical evolution and likely a shared formation site (except for one star). In this case, chemical evolution models indicate that the formation site would have had a baryonic mass of $\sim1.4\times10^9\msun$, similar to classical dwarf galaxies. High-energy supernovae and hypernovae are needed to reproduce the [X/Fe] up to the Fe-peak, while fast-rotating massive stars and neutron star merger events explain the [X/Fe] of the neutron-capture elements. The absence of Type Ia supernova signatures suggests a star formation duration of $\lesssim1$~Gyr. Cosmological zoom-in simulations support the scenario that an in-plane infall of a single system could disperse stars over a wide range of angular momenta during the early Galactic assembly. We propose that these stars originated in a proto-Galactic building block, which we name Loki. Less likely, if progrades and retrogrades formed in two different systems, their chemical evolution must have been very similar, with a combined baryonic mass twice that of a single system. Forthcoming surveys will provide a large and homogeneous dataset to investigate whether Loki is associated with any of the known detected structures. The sub-Jovian desert is a region in the mass-period and radius-period parameter space, typically encompassing short-period ranges between super-Earths and hot Jupiters, that exhibits an intrinsic dearth of planets. This scarcity is likely shaped by photoevaporation caused by the stellar irradiation received by giant planets that have migrated inward. We report the detection and characterization of TOI-3568 b, a transiting super-Neptune with a mass of $26.4\pm1.0$ M$_\oplus$, a radius of $5.30\pm0.27$ R$_\oplus$, a bulk density of $0.98\pm0.15$ g cm$^{-3}$, and an orbital period of 4.417965(5) d situated in the vicinity of the sub-Jovian desert. This planet orbiting a K dwarf star with solar metallicity, was identified photometrically by TESS. It was characterized as a planet by our high-precision radial velocity monitoring program using MAROON-X at Gemini North, supplemented by additional observations from the SPICE large program with SPIRou at CFHT. We performed a Bayesian MCMC joint analysis of the TESS and ground-based photometry, MAROON-X and SPIRou radial velocities, to measure the orbit, radius, and mass of the planet, as well as a detailed analysis of the high-resolution flux and polarimetric spectra to determine the physical parameters and elemental abundances of the host star. Our results reveal TOI-3568 b as a hot super-Neptune, rich in hydrogen and helium with a core of heavier elements with a mass between 10 and 25 M$_\oplus$. We analyzed the photoevaporation status of TOI-3568 b and found that it experiences one of the highest EUV luminosities among planets with a mass M$_{\rm p}$ $<2$ M$_{\rm Nep}$, yet it has an evaporation lifetime exceeding 5 Gyr. Positioned in the transition between two significant populations of exoplanets on the mass-period and energy diagrams, this planet presents an opportunity to test theories concerning the origin of the sub-Jovian desert., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A on September 4, 2024

Barium (Ba) stars are chemically peculiar stars that show enhanced surface abundances of heavy elements produced by the slow-neutron-capture process, the so-called s-process. These stars are not sufficiently evolved to undergo the s-process in their interiors, so they are considered products of binary interactions. Ba stars form when a former Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) companion, which is now a white dwarf, pollutes them with s-process-rich material through mass transfer. This paper presents a detailed chemical characterization of two newly discovered Ba giants. Our main goal is to confirm their status as extrinsic s-process stars and explore potential binarity and white dwarf companions. We obtained high-resolution spectra with UVES on the Very Large Telescope to determine the chemical properties of the targets. We perform line-by-line analyses and measure 22 elements with an internal precision up to 0.04 dex. The binary nature of the targets is investigated through radial velocity variability and spectral energy distribution fitting. We found that both targets are enhanced in all the measured s-process elements, classifying our targets as Ba giants. This is the first time they are classified as such in the literature. Additionally, both stars present a mild enhancement in Eu, but less than in pure s-process elements, suggesting that the sources that polluted them were pure s-process sources. Finally, we confirmed that the two targets are RV variable and likely binary systems. The Milky Way is a mosaic of stars from different origins. In particular, metal-poor accreted star candidates offer a unique opportunity to better understand the accretion history of the Milky Way. In this work, we aim to explore the assembly history of the Milky Way by investigating accreted stars in terms of their ages, dynamical properties, and chemical abundances. We also aim to better characterize the impact of incorporating asteroseismic information on age and chemical abundance calculations of metal-poor accreted stars for which TESS data is available. In this study, we conducted an in-depth examination of 30 metal-poor accreted star candidates, using TESS and Gaia data, as well as MIKE spectra. We find satisfactory agreement between seismic and predicted/spectroscopic surface gravity (log g) values, demonstrating the reliability of spectroscopic data from our methodology. We found that while age determination is highly dependent on the log g and asteroseismic information used, the overall chemical abundance distributions are similar for different log g. However, we found that calcium (Ca) abundances are more sensitive to the adopted log g. Our study reveals that the majority of our stars have properties compatible to those reported for the Gaia-Sausage-Enceladus, with a minority of stars that might be associated to Splash. We found an age distribution with a median of 11.3 Gyr with lower and upper uncertainties of 4.1 and 1.3 Gyr respectively when including asteroseismic information. As regarding some key chemical signatures we note that these stars are metal-poor ([Fe/H]) < -0.8), alpha-rich ([alpha]/Fe] > 0.2), copper-poor ([Cu/Fe] < 0 ) and with chemical abundances typical of accreted stars. We present a detailed study of the chemical diversity of the metal-poor Milky Way (MW) using data from the GALAH DR3 survey. Considering 17 chemical abundances relative to iron ([X/Fe]) for 9,923 stars, we employ Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Extreme Deconvolution (XD) to identify 10 distinct stellar groups. This approach, free from chemical or dynamical cuts, reveals known populations, including the accreted halo, thick disc, thin disc, and in-situ halo. The thick disc is characterised by multiple substructures, suggesting it comprises stars formed in diverse environments. Our findings highlight the limited discriminatory power of magnesium in separating accreted and disc stars. Elements such as Ba, Al, Cu, and Sc are critical in distinguishing disc from accreted stars, while Ba, Y, Eu and Zn differentiate disc and accreted stars from the in-situ halo. This study demonstrates the potential power of combining a latent space representation of the data (PCA) with a clustering algorithm (XD) in Galactic archaeology, in providing new insights into the galaxy's assembly and evolutionary history.

Aims.We conduct a high-precision differential abundance analysis of the remarkable binary system HD 240429/30 (Krios and Kronos, respectively), whose difference in metallicity is one of the highest detected in systems with similar components to date (approximately 0.20 dex). A condensation temperature TC trend study was performed to search for possible chemical signatures of planet formation. In addition, other potential scenarios have been proposed to explain this disparity. Methods. Fundamental atmospheric parameters (Te f f , log g, [Fe/H], vturb) were calculated using the latest version of the FUNDPAR code employing high resolution MAROON-X spectra. We applied a full line-by-line differential technique to measure the abundances of 26 elements in both stars with equivalent widths and spectral synthesis taking advantage of the non-solar scaled opacities. Results.We found a difference in metallicity of approximately 0.230 dex, being Kronos more metal rich than Krios. The analysis encompassed the examination of the diffusion effect and primordial chemical differences, concluding that the observed chemical discrepancies in the binary system cannot be solely attributed to any of these processes. The results also shown a noticeable excess of Li by approximately 0.56 dex in Kronos, and an enhancement of refractories with respect to Krios. A photometric study with TESS data was carried out, without finding any signal of possible transiting planets around the stars. Several potential planet formation scenarios were also explored to account for the observed excess in both metallicity and lithium in Kronos. Planetary engulfment is a plausible explanation, considering the ingestion of an exceptionally large mass, approximately approximately 27.8M_Earth, but no scenario is definitively ruled out., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures

PLATO (PLAnetary Transits and Oscillations of stars) is ESA's M3 mission designed to detect and characterise extrasolar planets and perform asteroseismic monitoring of a large number of stars. PLATO will detect small planets (down to <2 R_(Earth)) around bright stars (<11 mag), including terrestrial planets in the habitable zone of solar-like stars. With the complement of radial velocity observations from the ground, planets will be characterised for their radius, mass, and age with high accuracy (5 %, 10 %, 10 % for an Earth-Sun combination respectively). PLATO will provide us with a large-scale catalogue of well-characterised small planets up to intermediate orbital periods, relevant for a meaningful comparison to planet formation theories and to better understand planet evolution. It will make possible comparative exoplanetology to place our Solar System planets in a broader context. In parallel, PLATO will study (host) stars using asteroseismology, allowing us to determine the stellar properties with high accuracy, substantially enhancing our knowledge of stellar structure and evolution. The payload instrument consists of 26 cameras with 12cm aperture each. For at least four years, the mission will perform high-precision photometric measurements. Here we review the science objectives, present PLATO's target samples and fields, provide an overview of expected core science performance as well as a description of the instrument and the mission profile at the beginning of the serial production of the flight cameras. PLATO is scheduled for a launch date end 2026. This overview therefore provides a summary of the mission to the community in preparation of the upcoming operational phases.

The chemical composition of a star's atmosphere reflects the chemical composition of its birth environment. Therefore, it should be feasible to recognize stars born together that have scattered throughout the galaxy, solely based on their chemistry. This concept, known as "strong chemical tagging", is a major objective of spectroscopic studies, but has yet to yield the anticipated results. We assess the existence and the robustness of the relation between chemical abundances and birth place using known member stars of open clusters. We followed a supervised machine learning approach, using chemical abundances obtained from APOGEE DR17, observed open clusters as labels and different data preprocessing techniques. We found that open clusters can be recovered with any classifier and on data whose features are not carefully selected. In the sample with no field stars, we obtain an average accuracy of $75.2\%$ and we find that the prediction accuracy depends mostly on the uncertainties of the chemical abundances. When field stars outnumber the cluster members, the performance degrades. Our results show the difficulty of recovering birth clusters using chemistry alone, even in a supervised scenario. This clearly challenges the feasibility of strong chemical tagging. The most metal-poor stars provide valuable insights into the early chemical enrichment history of a system, carrying the chemical imprints of the first generations of supernovae. The most metal-poor region of the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy remains inadequately observed and characterised. To date, only $\sim4$ stars with [Fe/H]~$<-2.0$ have been chemically analysed with high-resolution spectroscopy. In this study, we present the most extensive chemical abundance analysis of 12 low-metallicity stars with metallicities down to [Fe/H]~$=-3.26$ and located in the main body of Sagittarius. These targets, selected from the Pristine Inner Galaxy Survey, were observed using the MIKE high-resolution spectrograph at the {\it Magellan-Clay} telescope, which allowed us to measure up to 17 chemical species. The chemical composition of these stars reflects the imprint of a variety of type~II supernovae (SNe~II). A combination of low- to intermediate-mass high-energy SNe and hypernovae ($\sim10-70\msun$) is required to account for the abundance patterns of the lighter elements up to the Fe-peak. The trend of the heavy elements suggests the involvement of compact binary merger events and fast-rotating (up to $\sim300\kms$) intermediate-mass to massive metal-poor stars ($\sim25-120\msun$) that are the sources of rapid and slow processes, respectively. Additionally, asymptotic giant branch stars contribute to a wide dispersion of [Ba/Mg] and [Ba/Eu]. The absence of an $\alpha-$knee in our data indicates that type Ia supernovae did not contribute in the very metal-poor region ([Fe/H]~$\leq-2.0$). However, they might have started to pollute the interstellar medium at [Fe/H]~$>-2.0$, given the relatively low [Co/Fe] in this metallicity region., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. Turgor is the driving force of plant growth, making possible for roots to overcome soil resistance or for stems to counteract gravity. Maintaining a constant growth rate while avoiding the cell content dilution, which would progressively stop the inward water flux, imposes the production or import of osmolytes in proportion to the increase of volume. We coin this phenomenon stationary osmoregulation. The article explores the quantitative consequences of this hypothesis on the interaction of a cylindrical cell growing axially against an obstacle. An instantaneous axial compression of a pressurized cylindrical cell generates a force and a pressure jump which both decrease toward a lower value once water has flowed out of the cell to reach the water potential equilibrium. In a first part, the article derives analytical formula for these force and over-pressure both before and after relaxation. In a second part, we describe how the coupling of the Lockhart's growth law with the stationary osmoregulation hypothesis predicts a transient slowdown in growth due to contact before a re-acceleration in growth. We finally compare these predictions with the output of an elastic growth model which ignores the osmotic origin of growth: models only match in the early phase of contact for high stiffness obstacle.

Tensor Networks are graph representations of summation expressions in which vertices represent tensors and edges represent tensor indices or vector spaces. In this work, we present EinExprs.jl, a Julia package for contraction path optimization that offers state-of-art optimizers. We propose a representation of the contraction path of a Tensor Network based on symbolic expressions. Using this package the user may choose among a collection of different methods such as Greedy algorithms, or an approach based on the hypergraph partitioning problem. Aims. We explore different scenarios to explain the chemical difference found in the remarkable giant-giant binary system HD 138202 + CD-30 12303. For the first time, we suggest how to distinguish these scenarios by taking advantage of the extensive convective envelopes of giant stars. Methods. We carried out a high-precision determination of stellar parameters and abundances by applying a full line-by-line differential analysis on GHOST high-resolution spectra. Results. We found a significant chemical difference between the two stars (0.08 dex), which is largely unexpected considering the insensitivity of giant stars to planetary ingestion and diffusion effects. We tested the possibility of engulfment events by using several different combinations of stellar mass, ingested mass, metallicity of the engulfed object and different convective envelopes. However, the planetary ingestion scenario does not seem to explain the observed differences. For the first time, we distinguished the source of chemical differences using a giant-giant binary system. By ruling out other possible scenarios such as planet formation and evolutionary effects between the two stars, we suggest that primordial inhomogeneities might explain the observed differences. This remarkable result implies that the metallicity differences that were observed in at least some main-sequence binary systems might be related to primordial inhomogeneities rather than engulfment events. We also discuss the important implications of finding primordial inhomogeneities, which affect chemical tagging and other fields such as planet formation. We strongly encourage the use of giant-giant pairs. They are a relevant complement to main-sequence pairs for determining the origin of the observed chemical differences in multiple systems. The Gaia-ESO Survey is an European Southern Observatory (ESO) public spectroscopic survey that targeted $10^5$ stars in the Milky Way covering the major populations of the disk, bulge and halo. The observations were made using FLAMES on the VLT obtaining both UVES high ($R\sim47,000$) and GIRAFFE medium ($R\sim20,000$) resolution spectra. The analysis of the Gaia-ESO spectra was the work of multiple analysis teams (nodes) within five working groups (WG). The homogenisation of the stellar parameters within WG11 (high resolution observations of FGK stars) and the homogenisation of the stellar parameters within WG10 (medium resolution observations of FGK stars) is described here. In both cases, the homogenisation was carried out using a bayesian Inference method developed specifically for the Gaia-ESO Survey by WG11. The WG10 homogenisation primarily used the cross-match of stars with WG11 as the reference set in both the stellar parameter and chemical abundance homogenisation. In this way the WG10 homogenised results have been placed directly onto the WG11 stellar parameter and chemical abundance scales. The reference set for the metal-poor end was sparse which limited the effectiveness of the homogenisation in that regime. For WG11, the total number of stars for which stellar parameters were derived was 6,231 with typical uncertainties for Teff, log g and [Fe/H] of 32~K, 0.05 and 0.05 respectively. One or more chemical abundances out of a possible 39 elements were derived for 6,188 of the stars. For WG10, the total number of stars for which stellar parameters were derived was 76,675 with typical uncertainties for Teff, log g and [Fe/H] of 64~K, 0.15 and 0.07 respectively. Given the massive spectroscopic surveys and the Gaia mission, the Milky Way has turned into a unique laboratory to be explored using abundance ratios that show a strong dependency with time. Within this framework, the data provided through asteroseismology serve as a valuable complement. Yet, it has been demonstrated that chemical traits can not be used as universal relations across the Galaxy. To complete this picture, it is important to investigate the dependence on metallicity of the chemical ratios employed for inferring stellar ages. We aim to explore different combinations of neutron-capture, odd-Z and $\alpha$ elements as a function of age, particularly focusing on their metallicity dependence for a sample of 74 giant field stars. Using UVES observations, we derive atmospheric parameters and high-precision line by line chemical abundances (<0.04 dex) for the entire set of spectra. Stellar ages are inferred from astereoseismic information. By fitting chemical-age trends for three different metallicity groups, we estimated their dependence on metallicity. We found that the stronger chemical-age relations ([Zr/$\alpha$]) are not necessarily the ratios with the smaller dependence on metallicity ([Ce/$\alpha$] and [Ce/Eu]). We confirm the [n-capture/$\alpha$]-age trends for evolved stars, wherein the most significant correlation is evident in stars with solar-metallicity, gradually diminishing in stars with lower iron content. The lack of homogeneity within the metallicity range highlights the intricate nature of our Galaxy's star formation history and yield production. Metallicity dependence in s-process element yields and the impact of radial stellar migration challenge the reliability of using chemical abundances alone to date stars. In radio-frequency trap, the temperature of ion ensembles converges towards a hot equilibrium due to radio-frequency heating. This effect is detrimental to the stability of trapped ensembles and is the justification of cooling. The intensity of this radio-frequency heating increases with the amplitude of the radio-frequency field $q_x$. Using an analytical empirical formula, we show that the lifetime of the ion ensemble $t_0$ under cold condition increases with $q_x$ according to a power law $t_0\propto q_x^A$, and does not vary significantly for the several ion quantities $N$ tested. The temperature of the explosive onset $B$ decreases linearly with $q_x$. We also show that non-linear instabilities due to trapping parameters decreases $t_0$ and $B$, and produce a local increase of heating rate for certain temperature ranges., Comment: 6 pages including the 29 references, 4 figures, 2 tables. We present a photometric characterization of 208 ultra-cool dwarfs (UCDs) with spectral types between M4 and L4, from 20-second and 2-minute cadence TESS light curves. We determine rotation periods for 87 objects (42 percent) and identify 778 flare events in 103 UCDs (49.5 percent). For 777 flaring events (corresponding to 102 objects), we derive bolometric energies between 2.1e30 and 1.1e34 erg , with 56 superflare events. No transiting planets or eclipsing binaries were identified. We find that the fraction of UCDs with rotation and flaring activity is, at least, 20 percent higher in M4-M6 spectral types than in later UCDs (M7-L4). For spectral types between M4 and L0, we measure the slope of the flare bolometric energy-duration correlation to be gamma = 0.497 +/- 0.058, which agrees with that found in previous studies for solar-type and M dwarfs. Moreover, we determine the slope of the flare frequency distribution to be alpha = -1.75 +/- 0.04 for M4-M5 dwarfs, alpha = -1.69 +/- 0.04 and alpha = -1.72 +/- 0.1 for M6-M7 and M8-L0 dwarfs, respectively, which are consistent with previous works that exclusively analysed UCDs. These results support the idea that independently of the physical mechanisms that produce magnetic activity, the characteristics of the rotational modulation and flares are similar for both fully-convective UCDs and partially-convective solar-type and early-M stars. The EMPATHIC project aimed to design an emotionally expressive virtual coach capable of engaging healthy seniors to improve well-being and promote independent aging. One of the core aspects of the system is its human sensing capabilities, allowing for the perception of emotional states to provide a personalized experience. This paper outlines the development of the emotion expression recognition module of the virtual coach, encompassing data collection, annotation design, and a first methodological approach, all tailored to the project requirements. With the latter, we investigate the role of various modalities, individually and combined, for discrete emotion expression recognition in this context: speech from audio, and facial expressions, gaze, and head dynamics from video. The collected corpus includes users from Spain, France, and Norway, and was annotated separately for the audio and video channels with distinct emotional labels, allowing for a performance comparison across cultures and label types. Results confirm the informative power of the modalities studied for the emotional categories considered, with multimodal methods generally outperforming others (around 68% accuracy with audio labels and 72-74% with video labels). Stellar chemical abundances have proved themselves a key source of information for understanding the evolution of the Milky Way, and the scale of major stellar surveys such as GALAH have massively increased the amount of chemical data available. However, progress is hampered by the level of precision in chemical abundance data as well as the visualization methods for comparing the multidimensional outputs of chemical evolution models to stellar abundance data. Machine learning methods have greatly improved the former; while the application of tree-building or phylogenetic methods borrowed from biology are beginning to show promise with the latter. Here we analyse a sample of GALAH solar twins to address these issues. We apply The Cannon algorithm to generate a catalogue of about 40,000 solar twins with 14 high precision abundances which we use to perform a phylogenetic analysis on a selection of stars that have two different ranges of eccentricities. From our analyses we are able to find a group with mostly stars on circular orbits and some old stars with eccentric orbits whose age-[Y/Mg] relation agrees remarkably well with the chemical clocks published by previous high precision abundance studies. Our results show the power of combining survey data with machine learning and phylogenetics to reconstruct the history of the Milky Way., Comment: Accepted in MNRAS journal. Phylogenetic methods have long been used in biology, and more recently have been extended to other fields - for example, linguistics and technology - to study evolutionary histories. Galaxies also have an evolutionary history, and fall within this broad phylogenetic framework. Under the hypothesis that chemical abundances can be used as a proxy for interstellar medium's DNA, phylogenetic methods allow us to reconstruct hierarchical similarities and differences among stars - essentially a tree of evolutionary relationships and thus history. In this work, we apply phylogenetic methods to a simulated disc galaxy obtained with a chemo-dynamical code to test the approach. We found that at least 100 stellar particles are required to reliably portray the evolutionary history of a selected stellar population in this simulation, and that the overall evolutionary history is reliably preserved when the typical uncertainties in the chemical abundances are smaller than 0.08 dex. The results show that the shape of the trees are strongly affected by the age-metallicity relation, as well as the star formation history of the galaxy. We found that regions with low star formation rates produce shorter trees than regions with high star formation rates. Context. Large spectroscopic surveys devoted to the study of the Milky Way, including Gaia, use automated pipelines to massively determine the atmospheric parameters of millions of stars. The Gaia FGK Benchmark Stars are reference stars with Teff and log g derived through fundamental relations, independently of spectroscopy, to be used as anchors for the parameter scale. The first and second versions of the sample have been extensively used for that purpose, and more generally to help constrain stellar models. Aims. We provide the third version of the Gaia FGK Benchmark Stars, an extended set intended to improve the calibration of spectroscopic surveys, and their interconnection. Methods. We have compiled about 200 candidates which have precise measurements of angular diameters and parallaxes. We determined their bolometric fluxes by fitting their spectral energy distribution. Masses were determined using two sets of stellar evolution models. In a companion paper we describe the determination of metallicities and detailed abundances. Results. We provide a new set of 192 Gaia FGK Benchmark Stars with their fundamental Teff and logg, and with uncertainties lower than 2% for most stars. Compared to the previous versions, the homogeneity and accuracy of the fundamental parameters are significantly improved thanks to the high quality of the Gaia data reflecting on distances and bolometric fluxes., Comment: accepted in A&A

We introduce a class of Bayesian bidding games for which we prove that the set of pure Nash equilibria is a (non-empty) sublattice and we give a sufficient condition for uniqueness that is often verified in the context of markets with inelastic demand. We propose a dynamic that converges to the extrema of the equilibrium set and derive a scheme to compute the extreme Nash equilibria.

Quantum sensors provide unprecedented magnetic field detection sensitivities, enabling these to extend the common magnetometry range of applications and environments of operation. In this framework, many applications also require high spatial resolution magnetic measurements for biomedical research, environmental monitoring and industrial production. In this regard, Optically Pumped Magnetometers (OPMs) are considered as prominent candidates, but are impaired in size with micrometer scale magnetic particles, e.g. magnetic droplets. In order to address this limitation, here we study the effects of adding a micrometer-to-millimeter magnetic guide to a miniature OPM. This device is applied to detect Fe3O4 magnetic droplets flowing at rates up to $25$ drop./s in a microfluidic channel. The computed spatial resolution is $300$ $\mu$m and the measured SNR is larger than $15$ dB for the different sizes of considered magnetic droplets.

We study the formation of particle-imbalanced quantum droplets in a one-dimensional optical lattice containing a binary bosonic mixture at zero temperature. To understand the effects of the imbalance from both the few- and many-body perspectives, we employ density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) simulations and perform the extrapolation to the thermodynamic limit. In contrast to the particle-balanced case, not all bosons are paired, resulting in an interplay between bound states and individual atoms that leads to intriguing phenomena. Quantum droplets manage to sustain a small particle imbalance, resulting in an effective magnetization. However, as the imbalance is further increased, a critical point is eventually crossed, and the droplets start to expel the excess particles while the magnetization in the bulk remains constant. Remarkably, the unpaired particles on top of the quantum droplet effectively form a super Tonks-Girardeau (hard-rod) gas. The expulsion point coincides with the critical density at which the size of the super Tonks-Girardeau gas matches the size of the droplet., Comment: Main text: 16 pages, 11 figures. The Walras approach to equilibrium focuses on the existence of market prices at which the total demands for goods are matched by the total supplies. Trading activities that might identify such prices by bringing agents together as potential buyers and sellers of a good are characteristically absent, however. Anyway, there is no money to pass from one to the other as ordinarily envisioned in buying and selling. Here a different approach to equilibrium -- what it should mean and how it may be achieved -- is offered as a constructive alternative. Agents operate in an economic environment where adjustments to holdings have been needed in the past, will be needed again in a changed future, and money is familiar for its role in facilitating that. Marginal utility provides relative values of goods for guidance in making incremental adjustments, and with money incorporated into utility and taken as num\`eraire, those values give money price thresholds at which an agent will be willing to buy or sell. Agents in pairs can then look at such individualized thresholds to see whether a trade of some amount of a good for some amount of money may be mutually advantageous in leading to higher levels of utility. Iterative bilateral trades in this most basic sense, if they keep bringing all goods and agents into play, are guaranteed in the limit to reach an equilibrium state in which the agents all agree on prices and, under those prices, have no interest in further adjusting their holdings. The results of computer simulations are provided to illustrate how this works.

The Gaia-ESO Survey is a public spectroscopic survey that has targeted $\gtrsim10^5$ stars covering all major components of the Milky Way from the end of 2011 to 2018, delivering its public final release in May 2022. Unlike other spectroscopic surveys, Gaia-ESO is the only survey that observed stars across all spectral types with dedicated, specialised analyses: from O ($T_\mathrm{eff} \sim 30,000-52,000$~K) all the way to K-M ($\gtrsim$3,500~K). The physics throughout these stellar regimes varies significantly, which has previously prohibited any detailed comparisons between stars of significantly different type. In the final data release (internal data release 6) of the Gaia-ESO Survey, we provide the final database containing a large number of products such as radial velocities, stellar parameters and elemental abundances, rotational velocity, and also, e.g., activity and accretion indicators in young stars and membership probability in star clusters for more than 114,000 stars. The spectral analysis is coordinated by a number of Working Groups (WGs) within the Survey, which specialise in the various stellar samples. Common targets are analysed across WGs to allow for comparisons (and calibrations) amongst instrumental setups and spectral types. Here we describe the procedures employed to ensure all Survey results are placed on a common scale to arrive at a single set of recommended results for all Survey collaborators to use. The combination of microwave and microfluidic technologies has the potential to enable wireless monitoring and interaction with bioparticles, facilitating in this way the exploration of a still largely uncharted territory at the intersection of biology, communication engineering and microscale physics. Opportunely, the scientific and technical requirements of microfluidics and microwave techniques converge to the need of system miniaturization to achieve the required sensitivity levels. This work, therefore, presents the design and optimization of a measurement system for the detection of bioparticles over the frequency range $0.01$ to $10$ $\mathrm{GHz}$, with different coplanar electrodes configurations on a microfluidic platform. The design of the measurement signal-chain setup is optimized for a novel real-time superheterodyne microwave detection system. In particular, signal integrity is achieved by means of a microwave-shielded chamber, which is protected from external electromagnetic interference that may potentially impact the coplanar electrodes mounted on the microfluidic device. Additionally, analytical expressions and experimental validation of the system-level performance are provided and discussed for the different designs of the coplanar electrodes. This technique is applied to measure the electrical field perturbation produced by $10$ $\mathrm{\mu m}$ polystyrene beads with a concentration of $10^5$ $\mathrm{beads/mL}$, and flowing at a rate of $10$ $\mathrm{\mu L/m}$. The achieved SNR is in the order of $40$ $\mathrm{dB}$ for the three coplanar electrodes considered.

The non-linear dynamics of large ion clouds ($N \geq 256 $ ions) trapped in radio-frequency traps and coupled to laser-cooling give rise to a bistable behaviour of the temperature. Numerical simulations of the free evolution of a large three-dimensional spherical cloud is used to characterise how the oscillating field amplitude and the ion number control the rf heating rate and the switching between the two stable states. We show that the heating rate does not significantly depends on the ion number but strongly depends on the oscillating field. This exhibits the major role played by the density of the ensemble. The competition between the radio-frequency heating and the laser cooling is also discussed. The eighteenth data release of the Sloan Digital Sky Surveys (SDSS) is the first one for SDSS-V, the fifth generation of the survey. SDSS-V comprises three primary scientific programs, or "Mappers": Milky Way Mapper (MWM), Black Hole Mapper (BHM), and Local Volume Mapper (LVM). This data release contains extensive targeting information for the two multi-object spectroscopy programs (MWM and BHM), including input catalogs and selection functions for their numerous scientific objectives. We describe the production of the targeting databases and their calibration- and scientifically-focused components. DR18 also includes ~25,000 new SDSS spectra and supplemental information for X-ray sources identified by eROSITA in its eFEDS field. We present updates to some of the SDSS software pipelines and preview changes anticipated for DR19.
