This study interrogates the concept of fictionality in the premodern Arabic tradition through probing into different readings of Ibn al-Muqaffaʿ’s Book of Kalīla and Dimna. Instead of presupposing the applicability of the modern concept of fictionality, I suggest to use the concept as a hermeneutic category that can encompass different perspectives on what exactly is fictional in a text. After identifying the challenges of defining fictionality in the pre-modern Arabic textual tradition, I shall look into some of the readers of Ibn al-Muqaffaʿ’s translation between the third/ninth and sixth/twelfth centuries to unpack different modalities. Some readers such as Ibn Qutayba in his ʿUyūn al-akhbār (Essential Accounts) and Ibn ʿAbd Rabbih in his al-ʿIqd al-farīd (The Unique Necklace) foreground the ethical function of parables and gnomic sayings and ignore the fact that most of Kalīla wa-Dimna’s stories contain animal characters. Others such as al-Yamanī in his Muḍāhāt amthāl kitāb Kalīla wa-Dimna (The Analogues of Kalīla wa-Dimna’s Parables) and al-Bīrūnī in his Geography of India tackle the ontology of fictionality from the perspective of reliability versus unreliability associated to Ibn al-Muqaffaʿ’s claim over the authenticity of his transmission of “the Indian book.” Finally, focusing on Ibn Sīnā’s and Ibn Rushd’s Commentaries to Aristotle’s Poetics, I show how Kalīla wa-Dimna as a prime example of parables (amthāl) and invented stories belongs to rhetorical discourse and has to be distinguished from poetic discourse which generates images (takhyīl). By opposing the two types of discourse — poetry and stories from Kalīla wa-Dimna — in terms of both their ontological status and their functionality, they portray, I argue, a different taxonomy of fictionality. Although all these various readers might agree that Kalīla wa-Dimna contains fictive content, the different interpretations defy a classification of Kalīla wa-Dimna within the modern dichotomy of fictional versus factual narrative but allow us to uncover different ontological and pragmatic modalities of fictionality in the premodern past.

Die steigenden Preise für Energie und natürlich die Erhöhung sämtlicher Lebenshaltungskosten sind und waren gesellschaftliche Kernthemen in den vergangenen Jahren. Die warnenden Stimmen wiesen zunächst lediglich auf die wachsenden Strom- und Baukosten und somit auf die Spitze des Eisbergs hin. In letzter Konsequenz schlittern viele Menschen aufgrund der gestiegenen Lebenshaltungskosten in die Insolvenz und sind finanziell nicht mehr in der Lage ihren familiären Verpflichtungen nachzukommen. Die vorliegende Diplomarbeit behandelt daher ein Thema, das eine nicht unerhebliche Anzahl von Familien in Österreich besonders in Zeiten der aktuellen Krise beschäftigt. Dreh- und Angelpunkt bildet die Frage, wie im Falle einer drohenden oder gar bestehenden Zahlungsunfähigkeit mit bereits fälligen sowie künftigen Unterhaltsforderungen umzugehen ist. Um dieses Thema zu erarbeiten, ist es unumgänglich, sich mit der Exekutionsordnung, der Insolvenzordnung wie auch mit dem geltenden Unterhaltsrecht näher auseinanderzusetzen. In den ersten Kapiteln dieser Diplomarbeit werden daher die Grundlagen der Exekutionsordnung, der Insolvenzordnung sowie des Unterhaltsrechts dargelegt. Darauf aufbauend wird in weiterer Folge die Möglichkeit der Exekution von Unterhaltsforderungen im Exekutionsverfahren behandelt und ein besonderes Augenmerkt auf die Unterhaltsexekution auf das Arbeitseinkommen gelegt. Darüber hinaus wird die Relevanz des Unterhaltsexistenzminimums als auch der Vorratspfändung erläutert. Anschließend werden die in § 382 Z8, §§ 382a, 382j EO geregelten familienrechtlichen Verfügungen thematisiert. Überdies werden die Möglichkeiten der Unterhaltsberechtigten im Insolvenzverfahren des Unterhaltsschuldners eingehend beschrieben. Dabei wird ein besonderes Augenmerk auf die offenen Unterhaltforderungen des Unterhaltsberechtigten vor und nach Eröffnung eines Insolvenzverfahren gelegt. Abschließend stehen Teile des ‚Internationalen Vollstreckungsrechts‘ im Fokus, wobei auch darauf eingegangen wird, wie ausländische Bruchteilstitel in Österreich vollstreckt werden können. In diesem Kontext wird zum Abschluss einer Gerichtsstandsvereinbarungen, die Frage der Anerkennung und Vollstreckung von Unterhaltstiteln in Österreich und die Anwendbarkeit der Europäischen Kontenpfändungsverordnung sowie der Europäische Unterhaltsverordnung erörtert. The rising prices for energy and, of course, the increase in all costs of living is and have been core social issues in recent years. Initially, the warning voices merely pointed to the growing cost of electricity and construction and thus to the tip of the iceberg. In the last consequence, many people slip into insolvency due to the increased cost of living and they´re no longer financially able to meet their family obligations. This thesis therefore deals with a topic that concerns a not inconsiderable number of families in Austria, especially in times of the current crisis. The central question is how to deal with already due and future maintenance claims in the case of an impending or even existing insolvency. In order to deal with this issue, it is necessary to take a closer look at the Execution Code, the Insolvency Code as well as the current alimony law. In the first chapters of this thesis, therefore, the basics of the Execution Code, the Insolvency Code and the maintenance law are presented. Based on this, the possibility of executing maintenance claims in execution proceedings will be dealt and special attention will be paid to the execution of maintenance claims on earned income. In addition, the relevance of the subsistence minimum as well as of the stock garnishment is explained. Subsequently, the family law orders regulated in § 382 Z8, §§ 382a, 382j EO are discussed. Furthermore, the possibilities of the maintenance beneficiaries in the insolvency proceedings of the maintenance debtor are described in detail. Special attention is paid to the outstanding maintenance claims of the maintenance creditor before and after the opening of insolvency proceedings. Finally, parts of the 'International Enforcement Law' are in focus, including how foreign fractional titles can be enforced in Austria. Last but not least, the possibility of concluding a jurisdiction agreement, the question of recognition and enforcement of maintenance titles in Austria and the applicability of the European Account Attachment Regulation and the European Maintenance Regulation are discussed in this context. With the aim to improve the design of metal complexes as stabilizers of noncanonical DNA secondary structures, namely, G-quadruplexes (G4s), a series of cyclic dinuclear Au(I) N-heterocyclic carbene complexes based on xanthine and benzimidazole ligands has been synthesized and characterized by various methods, including X-ray diffraction. Fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) and CD DNA melting assays unraveled the compounds’ stabilization properties toward G4s of different topologies of physiological relevance. Initial structure–activity relationships have been identified and recognize the family of xanthine derivatives as those more selective toward G4s versus duplex DNA. The binding modes and free-energy landscape of the most active xanthine derivative (featuring a propyl linker) with the promoter sequence cKIT1 have been studied by metadynamics. The atomistic simulations evidenced that the Au(I) compound interacts noncovalently with the top G4 tetrad. The theoretical results on the Au(I) complex/DNA Gibbs free energy of binding were experimentally validated by FRET DNA melting assays. The compounds have also been tested for their antiproliferative properties in human cancer cells in vitro, showing generally moderate activity. This study provides further insights into the biological activity of Au(I) organometallics acting via noncovalent interactions and underlines their promise for tunable targeted applications by appropriate chemical modifications.

Hintergrund: Die vorgestellten Daten demonstrieren das klinische Ergebnis von Patienten, die sich eine Hüfttotalendoprothese (THA) unterzogen haben. Als Zugangsweg wurde der minimal-invasive, direkt anteriore Zugang in Einzelschnitttechnik gewählt (MIS-DAA). Die Patientin wurden bis zwölf Monate nach Operation beobachtet. Methoden: Es wurden die Daten von 73 Probanden mittels der folgenden Fragebogen ausgewertet: Harris Hip Score (HHS), eXtra Short Musculoskeletal Functional Assessment questionnaire (XSFMA), Short Form 36 (SF-36) health survey und Patient Health Questionaire 9 „deutsch“ (PHQ-9 D). Zur Schmerzmessung kam eine visuelle Analogskala (VAS von 0-4) zum Einsatz. Daneben wurde die Aktivität mit Hilfe des Schrittzählers Stepwatch™ Activity Monitor (SAM) und eines 25m Gehtests auf Zeit (T25-FW) erfasst. Während der gesamten Aufzeichnung wurden auch Komplikationen erfasst. Ergebnisse: Zwölf Monate nach der Operation verbesserten sich die HHS-Werte signifikant von 55,2 präoperativ auf 92,4 (Werte 0 – 100). Der FSFMA Funktionsscore fiel ebenfalls signifikant von 39,4 auf 10,3 und der Beeintrachtigungsscore von 47,0 auf 15,8. Der Score für die Physis (PCS) stieg im SF 36 signifikant von 27,5 präoperativ auf 47,5 nach zwölf Monaten. Der Score für mentale Gesundheit (MCS) fiel dagegen sogar leicht von 57,6 auf 55,0. Dagegen fiel die Prävalenz der mittels PHQ-9 D gemessenen Somatisierungsstörungen von elf auf einen Fall. Die Schmerzreduktion durch die Operation zeigte sich durch einen Rückgang auf der VAS von 2,41 auf 0,35 zwölf Monate postoperativ. Die durchschnittlich täglich absolvierten Lastwechsel nahmen laut Schrittzählermessung signifikant von 5113 präoperativ auf 6402 zu. Außerdem stieg die Gehgeschwindigkeit im T25-FW signifikant von 22,06 s (= 1,13 m/s) auf 18,14 s (= 1,38 m/s). Es wurden keine schwerwiegenden Komplikationen, wie z.B. Transplantatlockerungen, festgestellt. Zusammenfassung: In der Zusammenschau der Ergebnisse zeigt sich ein Jahr nach MIS-DAA-THA, dass die Patienten eine signifikant bessere Funktion, Aktivität und weniger Schmerzen aufweisen. Der MIS-DA-Zugang ist sicher und weist keine erhöhte Komplikationsrate auf., Background: The presented data show the clinical outcome of patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty (THA) using a minimally invasive single-incision direct anterior approach (MIS-DAA) up to twelve months after surgery. Methods: The data of 73 arthroplasties were evaluated using the following questionaires: Harris Hip Score (HHS), extra short musculoskeletal functional assessment questionnaire (XSFMA), Short Form 36 (SF-36) health survey and the Patient Health Questionaire 9 „german“ (PHQ-9 D). A visual analogue scale (VAS from 0-4) was used zu measure pain. Additionally all patients activity was monitored utilizing a Stepwatch™ Activity Monitor (SAM), and a timed 25 m foot walk (T25-FW). Also complications were monitored for the entire 12 months. Results: Twelve months after surgery the HHS Score increased significantly from 55.2 preoperatively to 92.4 (out of 100). XSFMA functional index scores droped from 39.4 to 10.3 while the bother went down form 47.0 to a score of 15.8. Both scores showing a significant improvement. The SF-36 physical component score (PCS) was 27.5 ahead of the operation and did rise significantly up to 47.5 twelve months later, while the mental component score (MCS) dropped slightly, but significantly from 57,6 to 55.0. In opposition the PHQ-9 D showed a decline oft he prevalence of somatic disorders from elven cases pre-OP to one afterwards. Pain was significantly reduced by the operation, showing values dropping from 2.41 to 0.35 on a visual analogue scale (VAS).The mean cycles per day rose significantly up to twelve months after arthroplasty from 5113 of 6402 cycles per day. Furthermore, the obtained outcome for the T25-FW showed a significant increase in walking speed from 22.06 s (=1.13m/s) to 18.14 s (= 1.38 m/s). The were no severe complications, e.g. loosening of the implant, to be found. Conclusion: In summary the outcomes show that 1 year after MIS-DAA-THA patients show a significantly better function, activity and reduction of pain. The MIS-DAA is safe and shows no increased signs of complications.

This chapter picks up the century-old communist idea that this system will one day evolve to dominate the capitalist system. Now that China is successfully catching up, it not only has gained considerable weight globally but it is also an emerging power in its own region of South East Asia. Immediately, the question arises as to whether this emerging power is going to use its growing power to emerge as a dominant economic hegemon, which, not being purely market-oriented, may change the rules of the game in international business and economics away from free competition on a levelled playing field to something else that the today rich countries may not turn out to be superior in. This question, of course is reminiscent of the equally century-old fear of a China with diverging norms and values.

The aim was to evaluate the activity of seven medicinal, anti-inflammatory plants at the hH4R with focus on defined chemical compounds from Curcuma longa. Activities were analyzed with membrane preparations from Sf9 cells, transiently expressing the hH4R, Gαi2 and Gβ1γ2 subunits. From the methanolic extract of C. longa curcumin (1), demethoxycurcumin (2) and bis(4-hydroxy-cinnamoyl)methane (3) were isolated, purified with HPLC (elution-time 10.20, 9.66, 9.20 min, respectively) and together with six additional extracts, were characterized via radioligand binding studies at the hH4R. Compounds from C. longa were the most potent ligands at the hH4R. They exhibited estimated K i values of 4.26–6.26 µM (1.57–2.31 µg/mL) (1); 6.66––8.97 µM (2.26–3.04 µg/mL) (2) and 10.24–14.57 µM (3.16–4.49 µg/mL) (3) (95% CI). The estimated K i value of the crude extract of curcuma was 0.50–0.81 µg/mL. Fractionated curcumin and the crude extract surpassed the effect of pure curcumin with a K i value of 5.54 µM or 2.04 µg/mL [95% CI (4.47–6.86 µM), (1.65–2.53 µg/mL)]. Within this study, defined compounds of C. longa were recognized as potential ligands and reasonable lead structures at the hH4R. The mode of anti-inflammatory action of curcumin was further elucidated and the role of extracts in traditional phytomedicine was strengthened.

Adding interactions to topological (non-)trivial free fermion systems can in general have four different effects: (i) In symmetry protected topological band insulators, the correlations may lead to the spontaneous breaking of some protecting symmetries by long-range order that gaps the topological boundary modes. (ii) In free fermion (semi-)metal, the interaction could vice versa also generate long-range order that in turn induces a topological mass term and thus generates non-trivial phases dynamically. (iii) Correlation might reduce the topological classification of free fermion systems by allowing adiabatic deformations between states of formerly distinct phases. (iv) Interaction can generate long-range entangled topological order in states such as quantum spin liquids or fractional quantum Hall states that cannot be represented by non-interacting systems. During the course of this thesis, we use numerically exact quantum Monte Carlo algorithms to study various model systems that (potentially) represent one of the four scenarios, respectively. First, we investigate a two-dimensional $d_{xy}$-wave, spin-singlet superconductor, which is relevant for high-$T_c$ materials such as the cuprates. This model represents nodal topological superconductors and exhibits chiral flat-band edge states that are protected by time-reversal and translational invariance. We introduce the conventional Hubbard interaction along the edge in order to study their stability with respect to correlations and find ferromagnetic order in case of repulsive interaction as well as charge-density-wave order and/or additional $i$s-wave pairing for attractive couplings. A mean-field analysis that, for the first time, is formulated in terms of the Majorana edge modes suggests that any order has normal and superconducting contributions. For example, the ferromagnetic order appears in linear superposition with triplet pairing. This finding is well confirmed by the numerically exact quantum Monte Carlo investigation. Second, we consider spinless electrons on a two-dimensional Lieb lattice that are subject to nearest-neighbor Coulomb repulsion. The low energy modes of the free fermion part constitute a spin-$1$ Dirac cone that might be gapped by several mass terms. One option breaks time-reversal symmetry and generates a topological Chern insulator, which mainly motivated this study. We employ two flavors of quantum Monte Carlo methods and find instead the formation of charge-density-wave order that breaks particle-hole symmetry. Additionally, due to sublattices of unequal size in Lieb lattices, this induces a finite chemical potential that drives the system away from half-filling. We argue that this mechanism potentially extends the range of solvable models with finite doping by coupling the Lieb lattice to the target system of interest. Third, we construct a system with four layers of a topological insulators and interlayer correlation that respects one independent time-reversal and a unitary $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry. Previous studies claim a reduced topological classification from $\mathbb{Z}$ to $\mathbb{Z}_4$, for example by gapping out degenerate zero modes in topological defects once the correlation term is designed properly. Our interaction is chosen according to this analysis such that there should exist an adiabatic deformation between states whose topological invariant differs by $\Delta w=\pm4$ in the free fermion classification. We use a projective quantum Monte Carlo algorithm to determine the ground-state phase diagram and find a symmetry breaking regime, in addition to the non-interacting semi-metal, that separates the free fermion insulators. Frustration reduces the size of the long-range ordered region until it is replaced by a first order phase transition. Within the investigated range of parameters, there is no adiabatic path deforming the formerly distinct free fermion states into each other. We conclude that the prescribed reduction rules, which often use the bulk-boundary correspondence, are necessary but not sufficient and require a more careful investigation. Fourth, we study conduction electron on a honeycomb lattice that form a Dirac semi-metal Kondo coupled to spin-1/2 degrees of freedom on a Kagome lattice. The local moments are described by a variant of the Balents-Fisher-Girvin model that has been shown to host a ferromagnetic phase and a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ spin liquid at strong frustration. Here, we report the first numerical exact quantum Monte Carlo simulation of the Kondo-coupled system that does not exhibit the negative-sign problem. When the local moments form a ferromagnet, the Kondo coupling induces an anti-ferromagnetic mass term in the conduction-electron system. At large frustration, the Dirac cone remains massless and the spin system forms a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ spin liquid. Owing to the odd number of spins per unit cell, this constitutes a non-Fermi liquid that violates Luttinger's theorem which relates the Fermi volume to the particle density in a Fermi liquid. This phase is a specific realization of the so called 'fractional Fermi liquid` as it has been first introduced in the context of heavy fermion models., Durch Hinzufügen von Wechselwirkungen zu topologisch (nicht-)trivialen, freien Fermion-systemen können im Allgemeinen vier verschiedene Effekte entstehen: (i) Im Fall von symmetriegeschützen topologischen Bandisolatoren können Korrelationen durch langreichweitige Ordnung einige der schützenden Symmetrien spontan brechen, sodass die topologischen Randzustände eine Bandlücken aufweisen. (ii) In (Halb-)metallen mit freien Elektronen können Wechselwirkungen im Gegenzug langreichweitige Ordnung erzeugen, welche wiederum einen topologischen Massenterm induzieren und so eine nicht-triviale Phase dynamisch erzeugen. (iii) Korrelationen können außerdem zur Reduktion der topologischen Klassifikation freier Fermionsystemen führen, indem sie adiabatische Manipulationen zwischen zuvor verschiedenen Zuständen ermöglichen. (iv) Wechselwirkungen können langreichweitig verschränkte topologische Ordnung in Zuständen wie Quanten-Spin-Flüssigkeiten oder fraktionellen Quanten-Hall-Zuständen erzeugen, die nicht durch wechselwirkungsfreie Systeme dargestellt werden können. Im Laufe dieser Dissertation benutzen wir numerisch-exakte Quanten-Monte-Carlo Algorithmen um verschiedene Modelsysteme zu untersuchen, die (potentiell) eines der vier Szenarien darstellen. Als Erstes untersuchen wir zwei-dimensionale, $d_{xy}$-Wellen, spin-singlet Supraleiter, die relevant für Hochtemperatur-Supraleiter wie den Cupraten sind. Dieses Model repräsentiert lückenlose Supraleiter und weist chirale dispersionslose Randzustände auf, die durch Zeitumkehr- und Translationssymmetrie geschützt sind. Wir führen die übliche Hubbard-Wechselwirkung entlang des Randes ein um die Stabilität in Bezug auf Korrelationen zu untersuchen und beobachten ferromagnetische Ordnung im Fall von repulsiven Wechselwirkungen sowie Ladungsdichtewellen und/oder zusätzliche $i$s-Wellen-Paarung bei attraktiven Kopplungen. Eine Molekularfeldanalyse, die zum ersten Mal bezüglich der Majorana Randzuständen formuliert wird, deutet an, dass jede Ordnung normale und supraleitende Beiträge enthält. Diese Erkenntnis wird durch die numerisch-exakte Quanten-Monte-Carlo Untersuchung gut bestätigt. Als Zweites betrachten wir spinlose Elektronen auf einem zwei-dimensionalen Lieb-Gitter die der nächsten-Nachbar Coulombwechselwirkung ausgesetzt sind. Die Niedrigenergiemoden des freien Teilsystems bilden Spin-$1$ Dirac-Fermionen mit verschiedenen möglichen Massentermen. Bei einem davon wird die Zeitumkehrsymmetrie gebrochen und ein topologischer Chern-Isolator erzeugt, was die Hauptmotivation dieser Untersuchen darstellt. Wir verwenden zwei verschiedene Arten der Quanten-Monte-Carlo Methoden und finden stattdessen die Bildung von Ladungsdichtewellenordnung, welche die Teilchen-Loch-Symmetrie bricht. Zusätzlich führt dies, durch die verschieden großen Untergitter die Lieb-Gitters, zu einem endlichen chemischen Potential und treibt das System weg von Halbfüllung. Wir argumentieren, dass dieser Mechanismus möglicherweise die Breite von lösbaren Modellen mit endlicher Dotierung erweitert, indem das Lieb-Gitter an das Zielmodel von Interesse angekoppelt wird. Als Drittes konstruieren wir ein System, bestehend aus vier Schichten eines topologischen Isolators, mit Wechselwirkungen zwischen den Schichten, das eine unabhängige Zeitumkehr- und eine unitäre $\mathbb{Z}_2$ Symmetrie respektiert. Vorangegangene Untersuchungen legen nahe eine von $\mathbb{Z}$ auf $\mathbb{Z}_4$ reduzierte topologische Klassifikation, zum Beispiel durch das Aufspalten entarteter Nullmoden in topologischen Defekten, sofern die Korrelationen entsprechend entworfen wurden. Unsere Wechselwirkungen sind den Regeln dieser Analysis folgend gewählt, sodass ein adiabatischer Pfad zwischen Zuständen, deren topologische Quantenzahl sich um $\Delta q=\pm4$ unterscheiden, existieren sollte. Wir benutzen einen projektiven Quanten-Monte-Carlo Algorithmus um das Phasendiagramm des Grundzustandes zu bestimmen und erhalten, zusätzlich zum nicht-wechselwirkenden Halbleiter, einen symmetriegebrochenen Bereich der die nicht-wechselwirkenden Isolatoren voneinander trennt. Frustration reduziert die Größe dieser Region mit langreichweitiger Ordnung bis sie durch einen Phasenübergang erster Ordnung ersetzt wird. Im betrachteten Parameterbereich gibt es keinen adiabatischen Pfad, der zuvor verschiedene nicht-wechselwirkende Zustände ineinander überführt. Wir schließen daraus, dass die beschriebenen Regel zur Reduktion, die oft die Korrespondenz zwischen dem Probeninneren und dem Rand verwenden, notwendig aber nicht hinreichend sind und dass es hierzu weiterer Studien bedarf. Als Viertes betrachten wir Leitungselektronen auf einem Honigwabengitter, die einen Dirac Halbleiter verkörpern, und Kondo-gekoppeln diese mit Spin-$1/2$ Freiheitsgraden auf einem Kagomegitter. Die lokalen Momente werden durch eine Variante des Balents-Fisher-Girvin Models beschrieben, welches nachweislich eine ferromagnetische Phase und eine $\mathbb{Z}_2$ Spinflüssigkeit bei starker Frustration beherbergt. Wir berichten hier über die erste numerisch-exakte Quanten-Monte-Carlo Simulation des Kondo-gekoppelten Systems, die kein negatives Vorzeichenproblem aufweist. Wenn die lokalen Momente einen Ferromagneten bilden, überträgt dies einen antiferromagnetischen Massenterm auf das System der Leitungselektronen. Bei starker Frustration bleiben die Dirac-Fermionen masselos und das Spinsystem bildet eine $\mathbb{Z}_2$ Spinflüssigkeit. Aufgrund der ungeraden Anzahl von Spin-Freiheitsgraden pro Einheitszelle stellt dies keine Fermiflüssigkeit dar und verletzt das Theorem von Luttinger, dass das Fermivolumen mit der Teilchendichte der Fermiflüssigkeit verbindet. In this collective article, members of the AnonymClassic project discuss various aspects of their work on the textual tradition Kal��la and Dimna. Beatrice Gruendler provides a general introduction to the questions being considered. This is followed by a number of short essays in specific areas, organized into three categories: codicology, literary history and theory, and the digital infrastructure of the project. Jan J. van Ginkel summarizes the challenges involved in editing the Syriac versions of Kal��la and Dimna; Rima Redwan explains the AnonymClassic team���s approach vis-��-vis the transcription and textual segmentation of Arabic manuscripts; Khouloud Khalfallah follows this with an overview of the types of data that are recorded for each codex that is integrated into the project; Beatrice Gruendler, in a second contribution, shares some preliminary results from the analysis of interrelationships among manuscripts; and Rima Redwan, also in a second contribution, discusses the sets of illustrations, or ��image cycles��, that are found in many copies of Kal��la wa-Dimna. Moving into the realm of literary history and theory, Isabel Toral poses a range of questions relating to the status of Kal��la and Dimna, as (arguably) anonymous in authorship and as a fundamentally translated book; Johannes Stephan explores the references to Kal��la wa-Dimna found in various medieval Arabic scholarly works; and Matthew L. Keegan confronts the problem of the genre(s) to which Kal��la wa-Dimna might be assigned and the exceptional ��promiscuity�� of the text. The last section of the article, on digital infrastructure, contains two contributions: Theodore S. Beers describes a web application that the team has created to facilitate the consultation of published versions of Kal��la and Dimna, and, finally, Mahmoud Kozae and Marwa M. Ahmed offer a more comprehensive discussion of the digital tools and methods ��� specialized and in some cases developed ��in-house�� ��� on which the AnonymClassic project relies.

In the early phase of transition, which began in the 1990s, Central and Eastern European countries (CEECs) pursued economic restructuring that involved massive injections of state support. With reference to the history of state aid in centrally planned economies, we investigate state aid practices of CEECs since attaining full EU membership. We analyse whether their state aid policies during and after transition challenged European state aid legislation, and whether these fit into the EU strategy of ‘less but better targeted aid’. The data-based analysis is complemented with some indicative insights from state aid in the steel industry as well as the financial service sector to suggest that there is today no significant difference in state aid law application between East and West any more – the new EU members have further caught up by better aligning to the objectives of the State Aid Action Plan.

Phenytoin (PHT), valproic acid, and modern antiepileptic drugs (AEDs), eg, remacemide, loreclezole, and safinamide, are only effective within a maximum of 70%-80% of epileptic patients, and in many cases the clinical use of AEDs is restricted by their side effects. Therefore, a continuous need remains to discover innovative chemical entities for the development of active and safer AEDs. Ligands targeting central histamine H3 receptors (H3Rs) for epilepsy might be a promising therapeutic approach. To determine the potential of H3Rs ligands as new AEDs, we recently reported that no anticonvulsant effects were observed for the (S)-2-(4-(3-(piperidin-1-yl)propoxy)benzylamino)propanamide (1). In continuation of our research, we asked whether anticonvulsant differences in activities will be observed for its R-enantiomer, namely, (R)-2-(4-(3-(piperidin-1-yl)propoxy)benzylamino)propaneamide (2) and analogs thereof, in maximum electroshock (MES)-, pentylenetetrazole (PTZ)-, and strychnine (STR)-induced convulsion models in rats having PHT and valproic acid (VPA) as reference AEDs. Unlike the S-enantiomer (1), the results show that animals pretreated intraperitoneally (ip) with the R-enantiomer 2 (10 mg/kg) were moderately protected in MES and STR induced models, whereas proconvulsant effect was observed for the same ligand in PTZ-induced convulsion models. However, animals pretreated with intraperitoneal doses of 5, 10, or 15 mg/kg of structurally bulkier (R)-enantiomer (3), in which 3-piperidinopropan-1-ol in ligand 2 was replaced by (4-(3-(piperidin-1-yl)propoxy)phenyl)methanol, and its (S)-enantiomer (4) significantly and in a dose-dependent manner reduced convulsions or exhibited full protection in MES and PTZ convulsions model, respectively. Interestingly, the protective effects observed for the (R)-enantiomer (3) in MES model were significantly greater than those of the standard H3R inverse agonist/antagonist pitolisant, comparable with those observed for PHT, and reversed when rats were pretreated with the selective H3R agonist R-(α)-methyl-histamine. Comparisons of the observed antagonistic in vitro affinities among the ligands 1-6 revealed profound stereoselectivity at human H3Rs with varying preferences for this receptor subtype. Moreover, the in vivo anticonvulsant effects observed in this study for ligands 1-6 showed stereoselectivity in different convulsion models in male adult rats.
