Abstract

Since its launch, the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer-02 (AMS-02) has delivered outstanding quality measurements of the spectra of cosmic-ray (CR) species, $e^{\pm}$, $\bar{p}$, and nuclei (H-Si, S, Fe), which have resulted in a number of breakthroughs. Besides elemental spectra, AMS-02 also measures the spectra of light isotopes albeit within a smaller rigidity range. In this paper, we use the precise measurements of He isotopes and the $^3$He/$^4$He ratio by AMS-02, together with Voyager 1 data, and investigate their origin. We show that there is an excess in $^3$He at higher energies compared to standard calculations assuming its fully secondary origin, which may indicate a source of primary $^3$He, or signify a change in the propagation parameters over the Galactic volume probed by the $^3$He/$^4$He ratio. We provide updated local interstellar spectra (LIS) of $^3$He and $^4$He in the rigidity range from 2-40 GV. Our calculations employ the self-consistent GalProp-HelMod framework that has proved to be a reliable tool in deriving the LIS of CR $e^{-}$, $\bar{p}$, and nuclei $Z\le28$., Comment: 30 pages, 20 figures, 18 tables, ApJ, in press

Abstract

We use the GALPROP cosmic ray (CR) framework to model the Galactic CR distributions and associated non-thermal diffuse emissions up to PeV energies. We consider ensembles of discrete, finite lifetime CR sources, e.g.\ supernova remnants (SNRs), for a range of creation rates and lifetimes. We find that global properties of the CR sources are likely not directly recoverable from the current `snapshot' of the historic injection and propagation of CRs within the Galaxy that are provided by the data. We show that models for the diffuse $\gamma$ rays based on the discrete/time-dependent scenarios we consider are able to explain LHAASO very-/ultra-high energy (VHE/UHE) $\gamma$-ray data with up to 50\% contribution by unresolved leptonic sources at the highest energies. Over the models that we consider, variations in the diffuse VHE emissions can be $\sim$25\%, which is comparable to those for steady-state models that we investigated in earlier work. Such variations due to the discrete/finite nature of the CR sources are an important factor that are necessary to construct accurate physical models of the diffuse emissions from the Galaxy at VHE/UHEs., Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures. Abstract

This document is comprised of a collection of updated preliminary parameters for the key parts of the muon collider. The updated preliminary parameters follow on from the October 2023 Tentative Parameters Report. Particular attention has been given to regions of the facility that are believed to hold greater technical uncertainty in their design and that have a strong impact on the cost and power consumption of the facility. The data is collected from a collaborative spreadsheet and transferred to overleaf.

4. Ballistic Entanglement Cloud after a Boundary Quench

Abstract

Entanglement has been extensively used to characterize the structure of strongly correlated many-body systems. Most of these analyses focus on either spatial properties of entanglement or its temporal behavior. Negativity, as an entanglement measure, quantifies entanglement between different non-complementary blocks of a many-body system. Here, we consider a combined spatial-temporal analysis of entanglement negativity in a strongly correlated many-body system to characterize complex formation of correlations through non-equilibrium dynamics of such systems. A bond defect is introduced through a local quench at one of the boundaries of a uniform Heisenberg spin chain. Using negativity and entanglement entropy, computed by the time-dependent density matrix renormalization group, we analyze the extension of entanglement in the model as a function of time. We find that an entanglement cloud is formed, detached from the boundary spin and composed of spins with which it is highly entangled. The cloud travels ballistically in the chain until it reaches the other end where it reflects back and the cycle repeats. The revival dynamics exhibits an intriguing contraction (expansion) of the cloud as it moves away from (towards) the boundary spin.

Abstract

The International Muon Collider Collaboration (IMCC) [1] was established in 2020 following the recommendations of the European Strategy for Particle Physics (ESPP) and the implementation of the European Strategy for Particle Physics-Accelerator R&D Roadmap by the Laboratory Directors Group [2], hereinafter referred to as the the European LDG roadmap. The Muon Collider Study (MuC) covers the accelerator complex, detectors and physics for a future muon collider. In 2023, European Commission support was obtained for a design study of a muon collider (MuCol) [3]. This project started on 1st March 2023, with work-packages aligned with the overall muon collider studies. In preparation of and during the 2021-22 U.S. Snowmass process, the muon collider project parameters, technical studies and physics performance studies were performed and presented in great detail. Recently, the P5 panel [4] in the U.S. recommended a muon collider R&D, proposed to join the IMCC and envisages that the U.S. should prepare to host a muon collider, calling this their "muon shot". Abstract

The Rabi-Stark model is a non-linear generalization of the quantum Rabi model including the dynamical Stark shift as a tunable term, which can be realized via quantum simulation on a cavity QED platform. When the Stark coupling becomes equal to the mode frequency, the spectrum changes drastically, a transition usually termed "spectral collapse" because numerical studies indicate an infinitely degenerate ground state. We show that the spectrum extends continuously from a threshold value up to infinity. A set of normalizable states are embedded in the continuum which furnishes an unexpected analogy to the atomic Stark effect. Bound states and continuum can be obtained analytically through two equally justified, but different confluence processes of the associated differential equation in Bargmann space. 16. Isolation and characterization of edible mushroom-forming fungi> from Swedish nature

Abstract

Fungi are a highly diverse group of organisms, of which only a small subset has been taken into cultivation for application in biotechnology and food industry. Accordingly, outside of a few model species, there is a lack of knowledge about the isolation and cultivation of fungi>. In this study, we isolated 17 wild strains of 14 different species of edible, mushroom-forming fungi> growing in Swedish nature. We documented their growth rates under different temperatures, investigated their fruiting characteristics, and compared the results to data obtained from common laboratory strains. Our results show that the strains from commercially cultivated species have a higher mycelial growth rate and tend to grow faster at higher temperatures than strains from less frequently cultivated species. The fruiting experiments led to successful fruiting of four newly collected wild strains, belonging to the species Hericium coralloides, Pleurotus pulmonarius, and Schizophyllum commune. Although some strains fruited on potato dextrose agar (PDA), more specific substrates such as straw or birch pellets indicated more potential for mushroom production. All newly isolated strains of this study have been deposited at the Westerdijk Fungal Biodiversity Institute (CBS) collection and are thereby made available for further studies and/or use in application in the food industry or biotechnology. Two species isolated in this study are entirely novel to widely used culture collections, and for nine species no Swedish strain has been deposited previously. The description of the mycelial growth and fruiting of the isolated strains in this study is a first step on their way to further use.

Abstract

We study how time-dependent energy fluctuations impact the dynamical quantum phase transitions (DQPTs) following a noisy ramped quench of the transverse magnetic field in a quantum Ising chain. By numerically solving the stochastic Schr\"odinger equation of the mode-decoupled fermionic Hamiltonian of the problem, we identify two generic scenarios: Depending on the amplitude of the noise and the rate of the ramp, the expected periodic sequence of noiseless DQPTs may either be uniformly shifted in time or else replaced by a disarray of closely spaced DQPTs. Guided by an exact noise master equation, we trace the phenomenon to the interplay between noise-induced excitations which accumulate during the quench and the near-adiabatic dynamics of the massive modes of the system. This article reviews and summarizes current reproduction and replication practices in political science. We first provide definitions for reproducibility and replicability. We then review data availability policies for 28 leading political science journals and present the results from a survey of editors about their willingness to publish comments and replications. We discuss new initiatives that seek to promote and generate high-quality reproductions and replications. Finally, we make the case for standards and practices that may help increase data availability, reproducibility, and replicability in political science.

Abstract

Abstract Introduction A study at Sahlgrenska University Hospital (SU) found significant variation in the treatment of ankle fractures, leading to the development of a structured treatment algorithm (TA). The TA aimed to standardise treatment and reduce the number of unnecessary surgical procedures. A follow-up study concluded that the number of surgeries had significantly decreased since the TA was introduced. However, the long-term effects of the TA and the reduced number of surgical procedures remain unclear. The aim of the study was to analyse the long-term effects of a structured TA for ankle fractures, focusing on complications and reoperation rates. Method The present study is a long-term follow-up of the same two cohorts of patients with lateral malleolar fractures of type AO/OTA44-B1, as studied in the previous studies on the TA for ankle fractures at SU. The current study compares a group of AO/OTA 44B1 fractures treated before introducing the TA, the pre-TA cohort (n = 410), with a group treated after introducing the TA, the post-TA cohort (n = 333). Both cohorts were followed for at least four years, and the outcomes were reoperation or complication. Reoperation was defined as any surgical procedure performed ≥ 30 days after the injury. Results The results highlight a statistically significant reduction in the reoperation rate for lateral malleolar ankle fractures from 7.1 to 2.4% (p = 0.006) after introducing a TA that reduced the number of primary surgical procedures. Hardware-related issues were identified as the dominant cause of reoperation in both cohorts. Three major reoperations were observed in the pre-TA cohort compared to none in the post-TA cohort. The present study revealed no increase in the frequency of reoperations (late surgeries) due to non-union. Conclusion The non-surgical treatment of stable ankle fractures does not lead to an increase in reoperations caused by non-union. A TA that reduces the need for primary surgical procedures for lateral malleolar fractures of type AO/OTA44-B1 has resulted in a significant decrease in reoperation rates and no increase in failure rates. This long-term follow-up demonstrates that a non-surgical approach to isolated lateral malleolar fractures is safe.

22. Teachers' Action Research as a Case of Social Learning: Exploring Learning in between Research and School Practice

Abstract

Although action research has a history of bridging gaps between research and school practice, challenges emerge when aligning a scientific approach with development work in schools and in collaboration between research and school practice. In this article, we aim to deepen the knowledge on teachers' action research as social learning in collaboration with a research-based PD leader. In this study, we follow two teachers conducting action research in a Swedish upper secondary school, in collaboration with a professional development (PD) leader who is also a doctoral student. Qualitative data have been used to write value-creation stories that illustrate the learning process throughout their collaboration. Our findings show how joint work between the teachers and the PD leader functions as a boundary process where two sets of practices -- classroom and academic -- are coordinated and contribute to the learning process.

Abstract

The order Sordariales is taxonomically diverse, and harbours many species with different lifestyles and large economic importance. Despite its importance, a robust genome-scale phylogeny, and associated comparative genomic analysis of the order is lacking. In this study, we examined whole-genome data from 99 Sordariales, including 52 newly sequenced genomes, and seven outgroup taxa. We inferred a comprehensive phylogeny that resolved several contentious relationships amongst families in the order, and cleared-up intrafamily relationships within the Podosporaceae. Extensive comparative genomics showed that genomes from the three largest families in the dataset (Chaetomiaceae, Podosporaceae and Sordariaceae) differ greatly in GC content, genome size, gene number, repeat percentage, evolutionary rate, and genome content affected by repeat-induced point mutations (RIP). All genomic traits showed phylogenetic signal, and ancestral state reconstruction revealed that the variation of the properties stems primarily from within-family evolution. Together, the results provide a thorough framework for understanding genome evolution in this important group of fungi.

32. On the trajectory of discrimination: A meta-analysis and forecasting survey capturing 44 years of field experiments on gender and hiring decisions

Abstract

A preregistered meta-analysis, including 244 effect sizes from 85 field audits and 361,645 individual job applications, tested for gender bias in hiring practices in female-stereotypical and gender-balanced as well as male-stereotypical jobs from 1976 to 2020. A “red team” of independent experts was recruited to increase the rigor and robustness of our meta-analytic approach. A forecasting survey further examined whether laypeople (n = 499 nationally representative adults) and scientists (n = 312) could predict the results. Forecasters correctly anticipated reductions in discrimination against female candidates over time. However, both scientists and laypeople overestimated the continuation of bias against female candidates. Instead, selection bias in favor of male over female candidates was eliminated and, if anything, slightly reversed in sign starting in 2009 for mixed-gender and male-stereotypical jobs in our sample. Forecasters further failed to anticipate that discrimination against male candidates for stereotypically female jobs would remain stable across the decades.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Poor post-amputation healing delays prosthetic fitting, adversely affecting mortality, quality of life, and cardiovascular health. Current residual limb assessments are subjective and lack standardized guidelines, emphasizing the need for objective biomarkers to improve healing and prosthesis readiness assessments. OBJECTIVE(S): This review aimed to identify predictive, diagnostic, and indicative chemical biomarkers of healing of the tissues and structures found in the residual limbs of adults with amputation. METHODOLOGY: This scoping review followed Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) and PRISMA-ScR guidelines. Searches using the terms “biomarkers,” “wound healing,” and “amputation” were performed across Web of Science, Ovid Medline, Ovid Embase, Scopus, Cochrane, PubMed, and CINAHL databases. Inclusion criteria were: 1) References to chemical biomarkers and healing; 2) Residuum tissue healing; 3) Repeatable methodology with ethical approval. Included articles were evaluated for quality of evidence (QualSyst tool) and level of evidence (JBI classification). Sources were categorized by study (e.g., randomized controlled trial or bench research), wound (diabetic, amputation, other), and model (human, murine, other) type. Chemical biomarkers repeated across study categories, and quantification methods were reported on. FINDINGS: From 3,306 titles and abstracts screened, 646 underwent full-text review, and 203 met the criteria for data extraction, with 76% classified as strong quality. 38 chemical biomarkers were identified across 4 to 50 sources, with interleukins (predictive, indicative, and diagnostic) and HbA1c (predictive) most prevalent, appearing in 50 and 48 sources, respectively. Other biomarkers included predictive blood markers (e.g., cholesterol, white blood cell counts), indicative growth factors, bacteria presence (predictive), proteins (predictive, indicative, and diagnostic, e.g., matrix metalloproteinases), and cellular markers (indicative and diagnostic, e.g., Ki-67, alpha-smooth muscle actin [α-SMA]). CONCLUSION: Predictive biomarkers identify comorbidities that may hinder healing, aiding in pre-amputation risk assessment for poor recovery. Indicative biomarkers monitor key biological healing processes, such as angiogenesis (the formation of new blood vessels), wound contraction, and inflammation. Diagnostic biomarkers provide direct insights into tissue composition and cellular-level healing. Integrating these biomarkers into post-amputation assessments enables continuous monitoring of the healing process while accounting for comorbidities, enhancing the objectivity of post-surgical healing management and ensuring more effective, personalized rehabilitation strategies. Other biomarkers included blood tests (cholesterol, white blood cell counts) and bacteria levels that predict healing, growth factors that indicate healing progress, and markers that diagnose tissue changes at a cellular level. Biomarkers that predict healing can identify issues like infections or poor nutrition that might slow healing, useful for assessing non-healing risks before amputation. Markers that indicate healing show how the healing process is progressing by tracking changes like decreases in inflammation or increases in tissue growth. Diagnostic biomarkers provide detailed information about the healing tissue at a cellular level. Abstract

The Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) light curve repository (LCR) is a publicly available, continually updated library of gamma-ray light curves of variable Fermi-LAT sources generated over multiple timescales. The Fermi-LAT LCR aims to provide publication-quality light curves binned on timescales of 3 days, 7 days, and 30 days for 1525 sources deemed variable in the source catalog of the first 10 years of Fermi-LAT observations. The repository consists of light curves generated through full likelihood analyses that model the sources and the surrounding region, providing fluxes and photon indices for each time bin. The LCR is intended as a resource for the time-domain and multi-messenger communities by allowing users to quickly search LAT data to identify correlated variability and flaring emission episodes from gamma-ray sources. We describe the sample selection and analysis employed by the LCR and provide an overview of the associated data access portal., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ Supplement Series

Abstract

The Galactic Center Excess (GCE) in GeV gamma rays has been debated for over a decade, with the possibility that it might be due to dark matter annihilation or undetected point sources such as millisecond pulsars (MSPs). This study investigates how the gamma-ray emission model ($\gamma$EM) used in Galactic center analyses affects the interpretation of the GCE's nature. To address this issue, we construct an ultra-fast and powerful inference pipeline based on convolutional Deep Ensemble Networks. We explore the two main competing hypotheses for the GCE using a set of $\gamma$EMs with increasing parametric freedom. We calculate the fractional contribution ($f_{\mathrm{src}}$) of a dim population of MSPs to the total luminosity of the GCE and analyze its dependence on the complexity of the $\gamma$EM. For the simplest $\gamma$EM, we obtain $f_{\mathrm{src}} = 0.10 \pm 0.07$, while the most complex model yields $f_{\mathrm{src}} = 0.79 \pm 0.24.$ In conclusion, we find that the statement about the nature of the GCE (dark matter or not) strongly depends on the assumed $\gamma$EM. The quoted results for $f_{\mathrm{src}}$ do not account for the additional uncertainty arising from the fact that the observed gamma-ray sky is out-of-distribution concerning the investigated $\gamma$EM iterations. We quantify the reality gap between our $\gamma$EMs using deep-learning-based One-Class Deep Support Vector Data Description networks, revealing that all employed $\gamma$EMs have gaps to reality. Our study casts doubt on the validity of previous conclusions regarding the GCE and dark matter, and underscores the urgent need to account for the reality gap and consider previously overlooked ''out of domain'' uncertainties in future interpretations., Comment: 56 pages, 25 figures; comments welcome! Abstract

Cosmic Rays (CRs) interact with the diffuse gas, radiation, and magnetic fields in the interstellar medium (ISM) to produce electromagnetic emissions that are a significant component of the all-sky flux across a broad wavelength range. The Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) has measured these emissions at GeV $\gamma$-ray energies with high statistics. Meanwhile, the High-Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) telescope array has observed large-scale Galactic diffuse emission in the TeV $\gamma$-ray energy range. The emissions observed at GeV and TeV energies are connected by the common origin of the CR particles injected by the sources, but the energy dependence of the mixture from the general ISM (true `diffuse'), those emanating from the relatively nearby interstellar space about the sources, and the sources themselves, is not well understood. In this paper, we investigate predictions of the broadband emissions using the GALPROP code over a grid of steady-state 3D models that include variations over CR sources, and other ISM target distributions. We compare, in particular, the model predictions in the VHE ($\geq$100 GeV) $\gamma$-ray range with the H.E.S.S. Galactic plane survey (HGPS) after carefully subtracting emission from catalogued $\gamma$-ray sources. Accounting for the unresolved source contribution, and the systematic uncertainty of the HGPS, we find that the GALPROP model predictions agree with lower estimates for the HGPS source-subtracted diffuse flux. Abstract

The low replication rate of published studies has long concerned the social science community, making understanding the replicability a critical problem. Several studies have shown that relevant research communities can make predictions about the replicability of individual studies with above-chance accuracy. Follow-up work further indicates that laypeople can also achieve above-chance accuracy in predicting replicability when experts interpret the studies into short descriptions that are more accessible for laypeople. The involvement of scarce expert resources may make these methods expensive from financial and time perspectives. In this work, we explored whether laypeople can predict the replicability of social science studies without expert intervention. We presented laypeople with raw materials truncated from published social science papers and elicited their answers to questions related to the paper. Our results suggested that laypeople were engaged in this technical task, providing reasonable and self-contained answers. The majority of them also demonstrated a good understanding of the material. However, the solicited information had limited predictive power on the actual replication outcomes. We further discuss several lessons we learned compared to the approach with expert intervention to inspire future works.
