1. Coloniality-Decoloniality and Critical Global Citizenship: Identity, Belonging, and Education Abroad

Abstract

This article draws on existing literature, a large, multi-institutional dataset, and several case studies to explore two empirical questions: Do students of color (SOC) differ from white students in statistically significant ways in respect to the global learning goal of cultural humility? And what interactive effects do students and faculty from diverse backgrounds, diversity and inclusion advocacy, and diverse community contexts have on one another? We draw on existing literature and quantitative data to demonstrate that SOC tend to bring strengths to global learning experiences. We share several case studies to demonstrate how those strengths may lead to specific alliances regarding justice work in host communities, complicating any conception of students as visitors unattached to local justice struggles. Throughout the article, we draw on current literature and practice to present several questions at the intersections of education abroad, diversity, equity, inclusion, community-based global learning, and critical global citizenship.

Abstract

I have recently suggested that some of the processes involved in the collaborative composition of new music could be analogous to several ideas introduced by Izhikevich in his theory of cortical spiking neurons and simple memory, a process which he calls Polychronization. In the Izhikevich model, the evocation of simple memories is achieved by the sequential re-firing of the same Polychronous group of neurons which was initially created in the cerebral cortex by the sensual stimulus. Each firing event within the group is contingent upon the previous firing event and, in particular, contingent upon the timing of the firings, due to a phenomenon known as “Spike Timing Dependent Plasticity.” I argue in this article that the collaborative creation of new music involves contingencies which form a Polychronous group across space and time which helps to create a temporary shared memorial space between the collaborators.

Abstract

Begreberne profession og tværprofessionelt samarbejde har spillet en central rolle i de senere års uddannelsesreformer. Med afsæt i Ove Kaj Pedersens argument om, at der sker et skift fra velfærdsstat til konkurrencestat, belyser artiklen, hvordan professionernes autonomi svækkes gennem stærkere styring, og hvordan tværprofessionelt samarbejde samtidig giver stat og kommuner mulighed for at finde fleksible løsninger, når styringssystemerne kommer til kort. Med eksempler fra antropologiske deltagerobservationer viser forfatteren, hvordan professionelle på forskellig vis i praksis tilpasser sig til konkurrencestatens komplekse krav, og hvordan det bliver stadigt vanskeligere for de professionelle at opretholde en fælles professionsetos. The concepts of profession and interprofessional cooperation have played a central role in recent years' educational reforms. Based on Ove Kaj Pedersen's theory that the welfare state is transformed into a competitive state, the article shows how professions are destabilized through stronger governance. At the same time, interprofessional cooperation allows states and municipalities to compensate when governance systems get short. With examples from anthropological field observations, the author shows how professionals by applying various modes of judgment in practice seek to adapt to shifting and competing requirements and how it has become difficult for professionals to maintain a shared professional ethos.
