Search

Barnard’s Loop is a famous arc of Hα emission located in the Orion star-forming region. Here, we provide evidence of a possible formation mechanism for Barnard’s Loop and compare our results with recent work suggesting a major feedback event occurred in the region around 6 Myr ago. We present a 3D model of the large-scale Orion region, indicating coherent, radial, 3D expansion of the OBP-Near/Briceño-1 (OBP-B1) cluster in the middle of a large dust cavity. The large-scale gas in the region also appears to be expanding from a central point, originally proposed to be Orion X. OBP-B1 appears to serve as another possible center, and we evaluate whether Orion X or OBP-B1 is more likely to be the cause of the expansion. Recent 3D dust maps are used to characterize the 3D topology of the entire region, which shows Barnard’s Loop’s correspondence with a large dust cavity around the OPB-B1 cluster. The molecular clouds Orion A, Orion B, and Orion λ reside on the shell of this cavity. Simple estimates of gravitational effects from both stars and gas indicate that the expansion of this asymmetric cavity likely induced anisotropy in the kinematics of OBP-B1. We conclude that feedback from OBP-B1 has affected the structure of the Orion A, Orion B, and Orion λ molecular clouds and may have played a major role in the formation of Barnard’s Loop.

We present an overview and data release of the spectral line component of the SMA Large Program, \textit{CMZoom}. \textit{CMZoom} observed $^{12}$CO(2-1), $^{13}$CO(2-1) and C$^{18}$O(2-1), three transitions of H$_{2}$CO, several transitions of CH$_{3}$OH, two transitions of OCS and single transitions of SiO and SO, within gas above a column density of N(H$_2$)$\ge 10^{23}$\,cm$^{-2}$ in the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ; inner few hundred pc of the Galaxy). We extract spectra from all compact 1.3\,mm \emph{CMZoom} continuum sources and fit line profiles to the spectra. We use the fit results from the H$_{2}$CO 3(0,3)-2(0,2) transition to determine the source kinematic properties. We find $\sim 90$\% of the total mass of \emph{CMZoom} sources have reliable kinematics. Only four compact continuum sources are formally self-gravitating. The remainder are consistent with being in hydrostatic equilibrium assuming that they are confined by the high external pressure in the CMZ. Based on the mass and density of virially bound sources, and assuming star formation occurs within one free-fall time with a star formation efficiency of $10\% - 75\%$, we place a lower limit on the future embedded star-formation rate of $0.008 - 0.06$\,M$_{\odot}$\,yr$^{-1}$. We find only two convincing proto-stellar outflows, ruling out a previously undetected population of very massive, actively accreting YSOs with strong outflows. Finally, despite having sufficient sensitivity and resolution to detect high-velocity compact clouds (HVCCs), which have been claimed as evidence for intermediate mass black holes interacting with molecular gas clouds, we find no such objects across the large survey area., Comment: 44 pages, 41 figures

The Gemini North Adaptive Optics (GNAO) facility is the upcoming AO facility for Gemini North providing a state-of-the-art AO system for surveys and time domain science in the era of JWST and Rubin operations. GNAO will be optimized to feed the Gemini infrared Multi Object Spectrograph (GIRMOS). While GIRMOS is the primary science driver for defining the capabilities of GNAO, any instrument operating with an f/32 beam can be deployed using GNAO. The GNAO project includes the development of a new laser guide star facility which will consist of four side-launched laser beams supporting the two primary AO modes of GNAO: a wide-field mode providing an improved image quality over natural seeing for a 2-arcminute circular field-of-view and a narrow-field mode providing near diffraction-limited performance over a 20x20 arcsecond square field-of-view. The GNAO wide field mode will enable GIRMOS's multi-IFU configuration in which the science beam to each individual IFU will be additionally corrected using multi-object AO within GIRMOS. The GNAO narrow field mode will feed the GIRMOS tiled IFU configuration in which all IFUs are combined into a "super"-IFU in the center of the field. GNAO also includes the development of a new Real Time Controller, a new GNAO Facility System Controller and finally the development of a new AO Bench. The Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC) is the nearest dense star-forming region at $\sim$400 pc away, making it an ideal target to study the impact of high stellar density and proximity to massive stars (the Trapezium) on protoplanetary disk evolution. The OMC1 molecular cloud is a region of high extinction situated behind the Trapezium in which actively forming stars are shielded from the Trapezium's strong radiation. In this work, we survey disks at high resolution with ALMA at three wavelengths with resolutions of 0.095\arcsec (3 mm; Band 3), 0.048\arcsec (1.3 mm; Band 6), and 0.030\arcsec (0.85 mm; Band 7) centered on radio Source I. We detect 127 sources, including 15 new sources that have not previously been detected at any wavelength. 72 sources are spatially resolved at 3 mm, with sizes from $\sim$8 - 100 AU. We classify 76 infrared-detected sources as foreground ONC disks and the remainder as embedded OMC1 disks. The two samples have similar disk sizes, but the OMC1 sources have a dense and centrally concentrated spatial distribution, indicating they may constitute a spatially distinct subcluster. We find smaller disk sizes and a lack of large (>75 AU) disks in both our samples compared to other nearby star-forming regions, indicating that environmental disk truncation processes are significant. While photoevaporation from nearby massive Trapezium stars may account for the smaller disks in the ONC, the embedded sources in OMC1 are hidden from this radiation and thus must truncated by some other mechanism, possibly dynamical truncation or accretion-driven contraction., Accepted in The Astrophysical Journal, 9/21/2021

The SPitzer InfraRed Intensive Transients Survey (SPIRITS) searched for luminous infrared (IR) transients and variables in nearly 200 nearby galaxies from 2014 to 2019, using the warm Spitzer telescope at 3.6 and 4.5 μm. Among the SPIRITS variables are IR-bright objects that are undetected in ground-based optical surveys. We classify them as (1) transients, (2) periodic variables, and (3) irregular variables. The transients include eSPecially Red Intermediate-luminosity Transient Events (SPRITEs), having maximum luminosities fainter than supernovae, red IR colors, and a wide range of outburst durations (days to years). Here we report deep optical and near-IR imaging with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) of 21 SPIRITS variables. They were initially considered SPRITE transients, but many eventually proved instead to be periodic or irregular variables as more data were collected. HST images show most of these cool and dusty variables are associated with star-forming regions in late-type galaxies, implying an origin in massive stars. Two SPRITEs lacked optical progenitors in deep preoutburst HST images; however, one was detected during eruption at J and H, indicating a dusty object with an effective temperature of ∼1050 K. One faint SPRITE turned out to be a dusty classical nova. About half the HST targets proved to be periodic variables, with pulsation periods of 670–2160 days; they are likely dusty asymptotic-giant-branch (AGB) stars with masses of ∼5–10 M ⊙. A few of them were warm enough to be detected in deep HST frames, but most are too cool. Out of six irregular variables, two were red supergiants with optical counterparts in HST images; four were too enshrouded for HST detection.

G0.253+0.016, commonly referred to as "the Brick" and located within the Central Molecular Zone, is one of the densest ($\approx10^{3-4}$ cm$^{-3}$) molecular clouds in the Galaxy to lack signatures of widespread star formation. We set out to constrain the origins of an arc-shaped molecular line emission feature located within the cloud. We determine that the arc, centred on $\{l_{0},b_{0}\}=\{0.248^{\circ}, 0.18^{\circ}\}$, has a radius of $1.3$ pc and kinematics indicative of the presence of a shell expanding at $5.2^{+2.7}_{-1.9}$ km s$^{-1}$. Extended radio continuum emission fills the arc cavity and recombination line emission peaks at a similar velocity to the arc, implying that the molecular and ionised gas are physically related. The inferred Lyman continuum photon rate is $N_{\rm LyC}=10^{46.0}-10^{47.9}$ photons s$^{-1}$, consistent with a star of spectral type B1-O8.5, corresponding to a mass of $\approx12-20$ M$_{\odot}$. We explore two scenarios for the origin of the arc: i) a partial shell swept up by the wind of an interloper high-mass star; ii) a partial shell swept up by stellar feedback resulting from in-situ star formation. We favour the latter scenario, finding reasonable (factor of a few) agreement between its morphology, dynamics, and energetics and those predicted for an expanding bubble driven by the wind from a high-mass star. The immediate implication is that G0.253+0.016 may not be as quiescent as is commonly accepted. We speculate that the cloud may have produced a $\lesssim10^{3}$ M$_{\odot}$ star cluster $\gtrsim0.4$ Myr ago, and demonstrate that the high-extinction and stellar crowding observed towards G0.253+0.016 may help to obscure such a star cluster from detection., 17 pages, 7 figures. We present a newly enlarged census of the compact radio population towards the Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC) using high-sensitivity continuum maps (3-10 $��$Jy bm$^{-1}$) from a total of $\sim30$ h centimeter-wavelength observations over an area of $\sim$20$'\times20'$ obtained in the C-band (4$-$8 GHz) with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) in its high-resolution A-configuration. We thus complement our previous deep survey of the innermost areas of the ONC, now covering the field of view of the Chandra Orion Ultra-deep Project (COUP). Our catalog contains 521 compact radio sources of which 198 are new detections. Overall, we find that 17% of the (mostly stellar) COUP sources have radio counterparts, while 53% of the radio sources have COUP counterparts. Most notably, the radio detection fraction of X-ray sources is higher in the inner cluster and almost constant for $r>3'$ (0.36 pc) from $��^1$ Ori C suggesting a correlation between the radio emission mechanism of these sources and their distance from the most massive stars at the center of the cluster, for example due to increased photoionisation of circumstellar disks. The combination with our previous observations four years prior lead to the discovery of fast proper motions of up to $\sim$373 km s$^{-1}$ from faint radio sources associated with ejecta of the OMC1 explosion. Finally, we search for strong radio variability. We found changes in flux density by a factor of $\lesssim$5 within our observations and a few sources with changes by a factor $>$10 on long timescales of a few years., Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 17 pages, 12 figures

Deep, narrow-band \Ha\ and 6584 \AA\ [\Nii ] CCD images of the peculiar, infrared excess B[e] star MWC~922 reveal a collimated, bipolar jet orthogonal to the previously detected extended nebula. The jet consists of a pair of $\sim$0.15 pc segments on either side of MWC~922 separated by gaps. The most distant jet segments disappear $\sim$0.6 pc from the star. The northwest beam points to a faint emission-line feature 1.65 pc from MWC~922 that may be a terminal bow shock where the jet rams the ambient medium. The narrow opening-angle of the jet combined with an estimated internal sound speed of $\sim$10 \kms\ implies a jet speed $\sim$500 \kms . The previously detected nebula extends up to 0.6~pc to the southwest of MWC~922 at right angles to the jet and appears to be an extension of the compact, edge-on disk surrounding the star. It points toward the HII region Messier 16 located $\sim$1\degr\ ($\sim$30 pc in projection) to the southwest. This nebula and jet appear to be externally ionized by the ambient Lyman continuum radiation field and have electron densities of n$_e \sim$ 50 to 100 cm$^{-3}$. The southwest nebula and jet have similar surface brightness in \Ha\ and [\Nii ]. Faint 70 $\mu$m emission traces the southwest ejecta that likely originates from $\sim$50 K dust embedded in the photo-ionized plasma which may shadow the dimmer ejecta northeast of MWC~922. MWC~922 may be a massive member of the Serpens OB1 or OB2 associations surrounding Messier 16 and Sh2-54., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures, MNRAS, in press

Simeis 57 (HS 191) is an optically bright nebula in the Cygnus X region with a peculiar appearance that suggests an outflow from a rotating source. Newly obtained observations and archival data reveal Simeis 57 as a low-density (ne ~ 100 cm−3) nebula with an east-to-west excitation gradient. The extinction of the nebula is AV ≤ 2 mag. The nebula is recognizable but not prominent in mid- and far-infrared images. In its direction, half a dozen small CO clouds have been identified at VLSR = +5 km s−1. One of these coincides with both the optical nebula and a second CO cloud at the nebular velocity VLSR ≈−10 km−1. No luminous stars are embedded in these molecular clouds, nor are any obscured by them and no sufficiently luminous stars are found in the immediate vicinity of the nebula. Instead, all available data points to the evolved star HD 193793 = WR 140 (an O4-5 supergiant and WC7 Wolf–Rayet binary) as the source of excitation, notwithstanding its large separation of 50′, about 25 pc at the stellar distance of 1.7 kpc. Simeis 57 appears to be a part of a larger structure surrounding the HI void centered on HD 193793.

We present the first results from a CARMA high-resolution $^{12}$CO(1-0), $^{13}$CO(1-0), and C$^{18}$O(1-0) molecular line survey of the North America and Pelican (NAP) Nebulae. CARMA observations have been combined with single-dish data from the Purple Mountain 13.7m telescope to add short spacings and produce high-dynamic-range images. We find that the molecular gas is predominantly shaped by the W80 HII bubble that is driven by an O star. Several bright rims are probably remnant molecular clouds heated and stripped by the massive star. Matching these rims in molecular lines and optical images, we construct a model of the three-dimensional structure of the NAP complex. Two groups of molecular clumps/filaments are on the near side of the bubble, one being pushed toward us, whereas the other is moving toward the bubble. Another group is on the far side of the bubble and moving away. The young stellar objects in the Gulf region reside in three different clusters, each hosted by a cloud from one of the three molecular clump groups. Although all gas content in the NAP is impacted by feedback from the central O star, some regions show no signs of star formation, while other areas clearly exhibit star formation activity. Other molecular gas being carved by feedback includes the cometary structures in the Pelican Head region and the boomerang features at the boundary of the Gulf region. Mass accretion and ejection are the fundamental processes during the early stages of star formation. We have conducted the first extensive study of the accretion and outflow properties in Class 0/I proto-brown dwarfs (proto-BDs) using VLT SINFONI spectroscopy and spectro-imaging observations. The near-infrared spectra for the proto-BDs show prominent emission in the Paschen β, Brackett γ, Brackett 10–19, and several [FeII] and H2 lines. The detection of H2 lines from vibrational energy levels of ν = 1 to ν = 6 indicates the presence of both a cold (E(v,J) < 6000 K) and a hot gas component (E(v,J) > 20,000 K). The Class 0 proto-BDs show strong emission in the H2 lines but the [Fe II] lines are undetected, while the Class I objects show emission in both [Fe II] and H2 lines, suggesting an evolutionary trend in the jets from a molecular to an ionic composition. Extended emission with knots is seen in the [Fe II] and H2 spectro-images for 3 proto-BDs, while the rest show compact morphologies with a peak on-source. The peak velocities of the [Fe II] lines (≥100 km/s) are higher than the H2 lines (∼10-50 km/s), indicating that these lines trace different flow components. The accretion and outflow activity rates for the proto-BDs are in the range of (2×10−6 - 5×10−9) M⊙/yr. The outflow rate derived using the [Fe II] lines is at least an order of magnitude higher than H2 lines, indicating that [Fe II] traces a large fraction of the total outflow mass. A comparison with Class 0/I protostars indicates that there is no notable decline in the accretion and outflow activity or jet efficiencies over a wide range in bolometric luminosities from ~30 L⊙ down to ~0.03 L⊙., {"references":["Riaz & Bally, 2021, MNRAS, 501, 3781"]}

NGC 6240 is a luminous infrared galaxy in the local universe in the midst of a major merger. We analyze high-resolution interferometric observations of warm molecular gas using CO J = 3–2 and 6–5 in the central few kpc of NGC 6240 taken by the Atacama Large Millimeter Array. Using these CO line observations, we model the density distribution and kinematics of the molecular gas between the nuclei of the galaxies. Our models suggest that a disk model represents the data poorly. Instead, we argue that the observations are consistent with a tidal bridge between the two nuclei. We also observe high-velocity redshifted gas that is not captured by the model. These findings shed light on small-scale processes that can affect galaxy evolution and the corresponding star formation.

Takemura, H., et al., Applying dendrogram analysis to the CARMA-NRO C18O (J = 1-0) data having an angular resolution of ∼8″, we identified 692 dense cores in the Orion Nebula Cluster region. Using this core sample, we compare the core and initial stellar mass functions in the same area to quantify the step from cores to stars. About 22% of the identified cores are gravitationally bound. The derived core mass function (CMF) for starless cores has a slope similar to Salpeter's stellar initial mass function (IMF) for the mass range above 1 M o˙, consistent with previous studies. Our CMF has a peak at a subsolar mass of ∼0.1 M o˙, which is comparable to the peak mass of the IMF derived in the same area. We also find that the current star formation rate is consistent with the picture in which stars are born only from self-gravitating starless cores. However, the cores must gain additional gas from the surroundings to reproduce the current IMF (e.g., its slope and peak mass), because the core mass cannot be accreted onto the star with 100% efficiency. Coupled fire-atmosphere models are simulators that integrate a fire component and an atmospheric component, with the objective of capturing interactions between the fire and atmosphere. As a fire releases energy in the combustion process, the surrounding atmosphere adjusts in response to the energy fluxes; coupled fire-atmosphere (CFA) models aim to resolve the processes through which these adjustments occur. Several CFA models have been developed internationally, mostly by meteorological institutions and primarily for use as a research tool. Research studies have provided valuable insights into some of the atmospheric processes surrounding a fire. The potential to run CFA models in real time is currently limited due to the intensive computational requirements. In addition, there is a need for systematic verification to establish their accuracy and the appropriate circumstances for their use. The Bureau of Meteorology (the Bureau) is responsible for providing relevant and accurate meteorological information to Australian fire agencies to inform decisions for the protection of life and property and to support hazard management activities. The inclusion of temporally and spatially detailed meteorological fields that adjust in response to the energy released by a fire is seen as a component in developing fire prediction systems that capture some of the most impactful fire and weather behavior. The Bureau’s ten-year research and development plan includes a commitment to developing CFA models, with the objective of providing enhanced services to Australian fire agencies. This paper discusses the operational use of fire predictions and simulators, learnings from CFA models and potential future directions for the Bureau in using CFA models to support fire prediction activities.

In this paper we present the CMZoom Survey's catalog of compact sources (< 10'', ~0.4pc) within the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ). CMZoom is a Submillimeter Array (SMA) large program designed to provide a complete and unbiased map of all high column density gas (N(H$_2$) $\geq$ 10$^{23}$ cm$^{-2}$) of the innermost 500pc of the Galaxy in the 1.3mm dust continuum. We generate both a robust catalog designed to reduce spurious source detections, and a second catalog with higher completeness, both generated using a pruned dendrogram. In the robust catalog, we report 285 compact sources, or 816 in the high completeness catalog. These sources have effective radii between 0.04-0.4 pc, and are the potential progenitors of star clusters. The masses for both catalogs are dominated by the Sagittarius B2 cloud complex, where masses are likely unreliable due to free-free contamination, uncertain dust temperatures, and line-of-sight confusion. Given the survey selection and completeness, we predict that our robust catalog accounts for more than ~99% of compact substructure capable of forming high mass stars in the CMZ. This catalog provides a crucial foundation for future studies of high-mass star formation in the Milky Way's Galactic Center., 34 pages, 27 figures

FEEDBACK is a SOFIA (Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy) legacy program dedicated to study the interaction of massive stars with their environment. It performs a survey of 11 galactic high mass star-forming regions in the 158 μm (1.9 THz) line of [C II] and the 63 μm (4.7 THz) line of [O I]. We employ the 14 pixel Low Frequency Array and 7 pixel High Frequency Array upGREAT heterodyne instrument to spectrally resolve (0.24 MHz) these far-infrared fine structure lines. With a total observing time of 96h, we will cover ∼6700 arcmin2 at 14 1) angular resolution for the [C II] line and 6 3 for the [O I] line. The observations started in spring 2019 (Cycle 7). Our aim is to understand the dynamics in regions dominated by different feedback processes from massive stars such as stellar winds, thermal expansion, and radiation pressure, and to quantify the mechanical energy injection and radiative heating efficiency. This is an important science topic because feedback of massive stars on their environment regulates the physical conditions and sets the emission characteristics in the interstellar medium (ISM), influences the star formation activity through molecular cloud dissolution and compression processes, and drives the evolution of the ISM in galaxies. The [C II] line provides the kinematics of the gas and is one of the dominant cooling lines of gas for low to moderate densities and UV fields. The [O I] line traces warm and high-density gas, excited in photodissociations regions with a strong UV field or by shocks. The source sample spans a broad range in stellar characteristics from single OB stars, to small groups of O stars, to rich young stellar clusters, to ministarburst complexes. It contains well-known targets such as Aquila, the Cygnus X region, M16, M17, NGC7538, NGC6334, Vela, and W43 as well as a selection of H II region bubbles, namely RCW49, RCW79, and RCW120. These [C II] maps, together with the less explored [O I] 63 μm line, provide an outstanding database for the community. They will be made publically available and will trigger further studies and follow-up observations.

We studied a small comet-shape reflection nebula, located in the dark cloud SL 4 in the Vela Molecular Ridge cloud C, known as BBWo 192E (GM 1-23), and a young infrared cluster embedded into the nebula, for the evidences of recent star formation. We obtained the images of BBWo 192E in Halpha and [SII] lines and in SDSS i' with Blanco telescope at the Cerro Tololo Interamerican Observatory to discover new Herbig-Haro (HH) flows. 2MASS and WISE surveys were used for the search of the additional member stars of the cluster. We also studied proper motions and parallaxes of the cluster members with the aid of GAIA DR2. Five new groups containing at least 9 HH objects tracing several distinct outflows were revealed. A previously unreported reflection nebula and a number of probable outflow sources were found in the infrared range. The proper motions allowed selecting eight probable member stars in the visual range. Their parallaxes correspond to a mean distance 800 +/- 100 pc for this cluster. The bolometric luminosities of the brightest cluster members are 1010 L(sun) (IRAS 08513-4201,the strong source in the center of the cluster) and 2 to 6 L(sun) for the five other stars. The existence of the optical HH flows around the infrared cluster of YSOs suggests that star formation in this cloud is on-going around the more massive HAeBe star. By its morphology and other features this star-forming region is similar to the zone of star formation near CPM 19., 8 pages, 11 figures

We present an overview of the CMZoom survey and its first data release. CMZoom is the first blind, high-resolution survey of the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ; the inner 500 pc of the Milky Way) at wavelengths sensitive to the pre-cursors of high-mass stars. CMZoom is a 500-hour Large Program on the Submillimeter Array (SMA) that mapped at 1.3 mm all of the gas and dust in the CMZ above a molecular hydrogen column density of 10^23 cm^-2 at a resolution of ~3" (0.1 pc). In this paper, we focus on the 1.3 mm dust continuum and its data release, but also describe CMZoom spectral line data which will be released in a forthcoming publication. While CMZoom detected many regions with rich and complex substructure, its key result is an overall deficit in compact substructures on 0.1 - 2 pc scales (the compact dense gas fraction: CDGF). In comparison with clouds in the Galactic disk, the CDGF in the CMZ is substantially lower, despite having much higher average column densities. CMZ clouds with high CDGFs are well-known sites of active star formation. The inability of most gas in the CMZ to form compact substructures is likely responsible for the dearth of star formation in the CMZ, surprising considering its high density. The factors responsible for the low CDGF are not yet understood but are plausibly due to the extreme environment of the CMZ, having far-reaching ramifications for our understanding of the star formation process across the cosmos., Comment: Accepted for Publication in ApJS

We identify 45 protostellar outflows in CO maps of the Orion A giant molecular cloud from the CARMA-NRO Orion survey. Our sample includes 11 newly detected outflows. We measure the mass and energetics of the outflows, including material at low-velocities by correcting for cloud contributions. The total momentum and kinetic energy injection rates of outflows is comparable to the turbulent dissipation rate of the cloud. We also compare the outflow position angles to the orientation of C$^{18}$O filaments. We find that the full sample of outflows is consistent with being randomly oriented with respect to the filaments. A subsample of the most reliable measurements shows a moderately perpendicular outflow-filament alignment which may reflect accretion of mass across filaments and onto the protostellar cores., 22 pages, 11 figures in main text, 47 additional figures in appendices. We present a large-scale survey of the central molecular zone (CMZ) of our Galaxy, as well as a monitoring program of Sgr A*, with the AzTEC/Large Millimeter Telescope (LMT) in the 1.1 mm continuum. Our 1.1 mm map covers the main body of the CMZ over a field of $1.6 \times 1.1$ deg$^2$ with an angular resolution of $10.5''$ and a depth of 15 mJy/beam. To account for the intensity loss due to the background removal process, we combine this map with lower resolution CSO/Bolocam and \textit{Planck}/HFI data to produce an effective full intensity 1.1 mm continuum map. With this map and existing \textit{Herschel} surveys, we have carried out a comprehensive analysis of the spectral energy distribution (SED) of dust in the CMZ. A key component of this analysis is the implementation of a model-based deconvolution approach, incorporating the Point Spread Functions (PSFs) of the different instruments, and hence recovering a significant amount of spatial information on angular scales larger than $10.5''$. The monitoring of Sgr A* was carried out as part of a worldwide, multi-wavelength campaign when the so-called G2 object was undergoing the pericenter passage around the massive black hole (MBH). Our preliminary results include 1) high-resolution maps of column density, temperature and dust spectral index across the CMZ; 2) a 1.1~mm light curve of Sgr A* showing an outburst of $140\%$ maximum amplitude on 9th May, 2014 but otherwise only stochastic variations of $10\%$ and no systematic long-term change, consistent with other observations., Comment: Accepted for publication by MNRAS

A unique filament is identified in the {\it Herschel} maps of the Orion A giant molecular cloud. The filament, which, we name the Stick, is ruler-straight and at an early evolutionary stage. Transverse position-velocity diagrams show two velocity components closing in on the Stick. The filament shows consecutive rings/forks in C$^{18}$O(1-0) channel maps, which is reminiscent of structures generated by magnetic reconnection. We propose that the Stick formed via collision-induced magnetic reconnection (CMR). We use the magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) code Athena++ to simulate the collision between two diffuse molecular clumps, each carrying an anti-parallel magnetic field. The clump collision produces a narrow, straight, dense filament with a factor of $>$200 increase in density. The production of the dense gas is seven times faster than free-fall collapse. The dense filament shows ring/fork-like structures in radiative transfer maps. Cores in the filament are confined by surface magnetic pressure. This paper analyses images from 43 to 340 GHz to trace the structure of the Source I disk in Orion-KL with $\sim$12 AU resolution. The data reveal an almost edge-on disk with an outside diameter $\sim$ 100 AU which is heated from the inside. The high opacity at 220-340 GHz hides the internal structure and presents a surface temperature $\sim$500 K. Images at 43, 86 and 99 GHz reveal structure within the disk. At 43 GHz there is bright compact emission with brightness temperature $\sim$1300 K. Another feature, most prominent at 99 GHz, is a warped ridge of emission. The data can be explained by a simple model with a hot inner structure, seen through cooler material. A wide angle outflow mapped in SiO emission ablates material from the interior of the disk, and extends in a bipolar outflow over 1000 AU along the rotation axis of the disk. SiO $v=0$ $J=5-4$ emission appears to have a localized footprint in the warped ridge. These observations suggest that the ridge is the working surface of the disk, and heated by accretion and the outflow. The disk structure may be evolving, with multiple accretion and outflow events. We discuss two sources of variability: 1) variable accretion onto the disk as Source I travels through the filamentary debris from the BN-Source I encounter $\sim$550 yr ago; and 2) episodic accretion from the disk onto the protostar which may trigger multiple outflows. The warped inner disk structure is direct evidence that SrcI could be a binary experiencing episodic accretion., Comment: Accepted in the Astrophysical Journal

Multi-epoch narrow-band HST images of the bipolar Hii region Sh2-106 reveal highly supersonic nebular proper motions which increase with projected distance from the massive young stellar object S106~IR, reaching over ~30 mas/year (~150 km/s at D=1.09 kpc) at a projected separation of ~1.4' (0.44 pc) from S106~IR. We propose that S106~IR experienced a $\sim10^{47}$ erg explosion ~3,500 years ago. The explosion may be the result of a major accretion burst, a recent encounter with another star, or a consequence of the interaction of a companion with the bloated photosphere of S106~IR as it grew from ~10 through ~15 Solar masses at a high accretion rate. Near-IR images reveal fingers of molecular hydrogen emission pointing away from S106~IR and an asymmetric photon-dominated region surrounding the ionized nebula. Radio continuum and Brackett-gamma emission reveal a C-shaped bend in the plasma, either indicating motion of S106~IR toward the east, or deflection of plasma toward the west by the surrounding cloud. The Hii region bends around a ~1' diameter dark bay west of S106~IR that may be shielded from direct illumination by a dense molecular clump. Herbig-Haro (HH) and Molecular Hydrogen Objects (MHOs) tracing outflows powered by stars in the Sh2-106 proto-cluster such as the Class 0 source S106 FIR are discussed., 47 pages, 24 figures

We imaged the continuum and molecular line emission from Orion Source I (SrcI) with up to 30 mas (12 AU) resolution at 43, 99, 223, and 340 GHz in an attempt to probe the structure and chemistry of the circumstellar disk and bipolar outflow associated with this high mass protostar. The continuum spectral index ranges from $\sim$2 along the midplane of the disk to $\sim$3 along the edges, consistent with dust that is optically thick in the midplane but becomes optically thin at the periphery. Salt (NaCl) emission is visible where the dust is optically thin; it provides a unique tracer of the velocity field within the disk. All other molecules that we have mapped - H$_2$O, AlO, SiO, SiS, SO, and SO$_2$ - appear to originate primarily in the bipolar outflow. The base of the outflow is corotating with the disk. SiS shows a filamentary structure that is most prominent along the edges of the outflow. The molecular distributions suggest that Si and Al released from dust grains in the disk react with oxygen derived from H$_2$O to form SiO and AlO, and with SO and SO$_2$ to form SiS., Accepted in the Astrophysical Journal. 18 pages, 17 figures

Supernova (SN) 2014C is a unique explosion where a seemingly typical hydrogen-poor stripped envelope SN started to interact with a dense, hydrogen-rich circumstellar medium (CSM) a few months after the explosion. The delayed interaction suggests a detached CSM shell, unlike in a typical SN IIn where the CSM is much closer and the interaction commences earlier post-explosion; indicating a different mass loss history. We present near- to mid-infrared observations of SN 2014C from 1-5 years after the explosion, including uncommon 9.7 $\mu$m imaging with COMICS on the Subaru telescope. Spectroscopy shows that the interaction is still ongoing, with the intermediate-width He I 1.083 $\mu$m emission present out to our latest epoch 1639 days post-explosion. The last Spitzer/IRAC photometry at 1920 days post-explosion further confirms ongoing CSM interaction. The 1-10 $\mu$m spectral energy distributions (SEDs) can be explained by a dust model with a mixture of 69% carbonaceous and 31% silicate dust, pointing to a chemically inhomogeneous CSM. The inference of silicate dust is the first among interacting SNe. An SED model with purely carbonaceous CSM dust is possible, but would require more than 0.22 $M_{\odot}$ of dust, which is an order of magnitude larger than what observed in any other SNe, measured in the same way, at this epoch. The light curve beyond 500 days is well fit by an interaction model with a wind-driven CSM and a mass loss rate of $\sim 10^{-3} \, M_{\odot}\,\rm yr^{-1}$, which presents an additional CSM density component exterior to the constant density shell reported previously in the literature. SN 2014C could originate in a binary system, similar to RY Scuti, which would explain the observed chemical and density profile inhomogeneity in the CSM., Comment: Submitted to ApJ

We present Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) observations of $^{12}$CO2$-$1 emission from circumstellar material around the massive star $\eta$~Carinae. These observations reveal new structural details about the cool equatorial torus located $\sim$4000 au from the star. The CO torus is not a complete azimuthal loop, but rather, is missing its near side, which appears to have been cleared away. The missing material matches the direction of apastron in the eccentric binary system, making it likely that $\eta$~Car's companion played an important role in disrupting portions of the torus soon after ejection. Molecular gas seen in ALMA data aligns well with the cool dust around $\eta$~Car previously observed in mid-infrared (IR) maps, whereas hot dust resides at the inner surface of the molecular torus. The CO also coincides with the spatial and velocity structure of near-IR H$_2$ emission. Together, these suggest that the CO torus seen by ALMA is actually the pinched waist of the Homunculus polar lobes, which glows brightly because it is close to the star and warmer than the poles. The near side of the torus appears to be a blowout, associated with fragmented equatorial ejecta. We discuss implications for the origin of various features northwest of the star. CO emission from the main torus implies a total gas mass in the range of 0.2-1 $M_{\odot}$ (possibly up to 5 $M_{\odot}$ or more, although with questionable assumptions). Within the early Universe, ‘extreme’ star formation may have been the norm rather than the exception 1,2 . Super star clusters (with masses greater than 105 solar masses) are thought to be the modern-day analogues of globular clusters, relics of a cosmic time (redshift z ≳ 2) when the Universe was filled with vigorously star-forming systems 3 . The giant H ii region 30 Doradus in the Large Magellanic Cloud is often regarded as a benchmark for studies of extreme star formation 4 . Here, we report the discovery of a massive embedded star-forming complex spanning about 500 pc in the unexplored southwest region of the Large Magellanic Cloud, which manifests itself as a younger, embedded twin of 30 Doradus. Previously known as N79, this region has a star-formation efficiency greater than that of 30 Doradus, by a factor of about 2, as measured over the past ~0.5 Myr. Moreover, at the heart of N79 lies the most luminous infrared compact source discovered with large-scale infrared surveys of the Large Magellanic Cloud and Milky Way, possibly a precursor to the central super star cluster of 30 Doradus, R136. The discovery of a nearby candidate super star cluster may provide invaluable information to understand how extreme star formation proceeds in the current and high-redshift Universe. The relatively unexplored southwestern region of the Large Magellanic Cloud is host to a massive, embedded star-forming complex that rivals the star-forming efficiency of 30 Doradus. Its most luminous object could be a super star cluster in formation.

We present proper motion measurements of 37 jets and HH objects in the Carina Nebula measured in two epochs of H$\alpha$ images obtained $\sim 10$ yrs apart with HST/ACS. Transverse velocities in all but one jet are faster than $\gtrsim 25$ km s$^{-1}$, confirming that the jet-like H$\alpha$ features identified by Smith et al. (2010) trace outflowing gas. Proper motions constrain the location of the jet-driving source and provide kinematic confirmation of the intermediate-mass protostars that we identify for 20/37 jets. Jet velocities do not correlate with the estimated protostar mass and embedded driving sources do not have slower jets. Instead, transverse velocities (median $\sim 75$ km s$^{-1}$) are similar to those in jets from low-mass stars. Assuming a constant velocity since launch, we compute jet dynamical ages (median $\sim 10^4$ yr). If continuous emission from inner jets traces the duration of the most recent accretion bursts, then these episodes are sustained longer (median $\sim 700$ yr) than the typical decay time of an FU Orionis outburst. These jets can carry appreciable momentum that may be injected into the surrounding environment. The resulting outflow force, $dP/dt$, lies between that measured in low- and high-mass sources, despite the very different observational tracers used. Smooth scaling of the outflow force argues for a common physical process underlying outflows from protostars of all masses. We constrain the proper motions of five OB stars associated with candidate stellar wind bow shocks in the Carina Nebula using HST ACS imaging over 9--10 year baselines. These proper motions allow us to directly compare each star's motion to the orientation of its candidate bow shock. Although these stars are saturated in our imaging, we assess their motion by the shifts required to minimize residuals in their Airy rings. The results limit the direction of each star's motion to sectors less than 90 degrees wide. None of the five stars are moving away from the Carina Nebula's central clusters as runaway stars would be, confirming that a candidate bow shock is not necessarily indicative of a runaway star. Two of the five stars are moving tangentially relative to the orientation of their candidate bow shocks, both of which point at the OB cluster Trumpler 14. In these cases, the large-scale flow of the interstellar medium, powered by feedback from the cluster, appears to dominate over the motion of the star in producing the observed candidate bow shock. The remaining three stars all have some component of motion toward the central clusters, meaning that we cannot distinguish whether their candidate bow shocks are indicators of stellar motion, of the flow of ambient gas, or of density gradients in their surroundings. In addition, these stars' lack of outward motion hints that the distributed massive-star population in Carina's South Pillars region formed in place, rather than migrating out from the association's central clusters., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

High-mass stars have generally been assumed to accrete most of their mass while already contracted onto the main sequence, but this hypothesis has not been observationally tested. We present ALMA observations of a 3 x 1.5 pc area in the W51 high-mass star-forming complex. We identify dust continuum sources and measure the gas and dust temperature through both rotational diagram modeling of CH3OH and brightness-temperature-based limits. The observed region contains three high-mass YSOs that appear to be at the earliest stages of their formation, with no signs of ionizing radiation from their central sources. The data reveal high gas and dust temperatures (T > 100 K) extending out to about 5000 AU from each of these sources. There are no clear signs of disks or rotating structures down to our 1000 AU resolution. The extended warm gas provides evidence that, during the process of forming, these high-mass stars heat a large volume and correspondingly large mass of gas in their surroundings, inhibiting fragmentation and therefore keeping a large reservoir available to feed from. By contrast, the more mature massive stars that illuminate compact H ii regions have little effect on their surrounding dense gas, suggesting that these main sequence stars have completed most or all of their accretion. The high luminosity of the massive protostars (L > 10^4 solar luminosities), combined with a lack of centimeter continuum emission from these sources, implies that they are not on the main sequence while they accrete the majority of their mass; instead, they may be bloated and cool., Accepted in ApJ. International audience; Gemini Observatory has been awarded from the National Science Foundation a major fund to build a new state-of-the-art Multi Conjugate Adaptive Optics facility for Gemini North on Maunakea called GNAO. The current Telephone: 1+56 51 2205 642 baseline system will use two lasers each split in two to create an artificial constellation of four laser guide star to measure the distortions caused by the atmosphere. At least two deformable mirror conjugated to 0km and the main altitude layer above Maunakea will be used to correct these distortions. The facility will be designed to feed future instrumentation, initially a near infrared imager and potentially a visiting 4-arm multi object adaptive optics IFU spectrograph. 1 In this paper I will present the main characteristics of this exciting facility, its promises and its challenges. I will also present its conceptual design and results of trade studies conducted within the team and the Gemini Adaptive Optics Working Group. The expected first light is for October 2024.

Young massive clusters (YMCs) are the most compact, high-mass stellar systems still forming at the present day. The precursor clouds to such systems are, however, rare due to their large initial gas mass reservoirs and rapid dispersal timescales due to stellar feedback. Nonetheless, unlike their high-z counterparts, these precursors are resolvable down to the sites of individually forming stars, and hence represent the ideal environments in which to test the current theories of star and cluster formation. Using high angular resolution (1$^{\prime\prime}$ / 0.05pc) and sensitivity ALMA observations of two YMC progenitor clouds in the Galactic Centre, we have identified a suite of molecular line transitions -- e.g. c-C$_{3}$H$_{2} $($7-6$) -- that are believed to be optically thin, and reliably trace the gas structure in the highest density gas on star-forming core scales. We conduct a virial analysis of the identified core and proto-cluster regions, and show that half of the cores (5/10) and both proto-clusters are unstable to gravitational collapse. This is the first kinematic evidence of global gravitational collapse in YMC precursor clouds at such an early evolutionary stage. The implications are that if these clouds are to form YMCs, then they likely do so via the "conveyor-belt" mode, whereby stars continually form within dispersed dense gas cores as the cloud undergoes global gravitational collapse. We present an initial overview of the filamentary structure in the Orion A molecular cloud utilizing a high angular and velocity resolution C$^{18}$O(1-0) emission map that was recently produced as part of the CARMA-NRO Orion Survey. The main goal of this study is to build a credible method to study varying widths of filaments which has previously been linked to star formation in molecular clouds. Due to the diverse star forming activities taking place throughout its $\sim$20 pc length, together with its proximity of 388 pc, the Orion A molecular cloud provides an excellent laboratory for such an experiment to be carried out with high resolution and high sensitivity. Using the widely-known structure identification algorithm, DisPerSE, on a 3-dimensional (PPV) C$^{18}$O cube, we identified 625 relatively short (the longest being 1.74 pc) filaments over the entire cloud. We study the distribution of filament widths using FilChaP, a python package that we have developed and made publicly available. We find that the filaments identified in a 2 square degree PPV cube do not overlap spatially, except for the complex OMC-4 region that shows distinct velocity components along the line of sight. The filament widths vary between 0.02 and 0.3 pc depending on the amount of substructure that a filament possesses. The more substructure a filament has, the larger is its width. We also find that despite this variation, the filament width shows no anticorrelation with the central column density which is in agreement with previous Herschel observations., Comment: 19 pages, 20 figures. We have investigated the formation and kinematics of sub-mm continuum cores in the Orion A molecular cloud. A comparison between sub-mm continuum and near infrared extinction shows a continuum core detection threshold of $A_V\sim$ 5-10 mag. The threshold is similar to the star formation extinction threshold of $A_V\sim$ 7 mag proposed by recent work, suggesting a universal star formation extinction threshold among clouds within 500 pc to the Sun. A comparison between the Orion A cloud and a massive infrared dark cloud G28.37+0.07 indicates that Orion A produces more dense gas within the extinction range 15 mag $\lesssim A_V \lesssim$ 60 mag. Using data from the CARMA-NRO Orion Survey, we find that dense cores in the integral-shaped filament (ISF) show sub-sonic core-to-envelope velocity dispersion that is significantly less than the local envelope line dispersion, similar to what has been found in nearby clouds. Dynamical analysis indicates that the cores are bound to the ISF. An oscillatory core-to-envelope motion is detected along the ISF. The explosive outflows are a newly-discovered family of molecular outflows associated with high-mass star forming regions. Such energetic events are possibly powered by the release of gravitational energy related with the formation of a (proto)stellar merger or a close stellar binary. Here, we present sensitive and high angular resolution observations (0.85$''$) archival CO(J=3-2) observations carried out with the Submillimeter Array (SMA) of the high-mass star forming region G5.89$-$0.39 that reveal the possible presence of an explosive outflow. We find six well-defined and narrow straight filament-like ejections pointing back approximately to the center of an expanding molecular and ionized shell located at the center of this region. These high velocity ($-$120 to $+$100 km s$^{-1}$) filaments follow a Hubble-like velocity law with the radial velocities increasing with the projected distance. The estimated kinematical age of the filaments is about of 1000 yrs, a value similar to the dynamical age found for the expanding ionized shell. G5.89 is the thus the third explosive outflow reported in the galaxy (together with Orion BN-KL and DR21) and argues in favor of the idea that this is a frequent phenomenon. In particular, explosive outflows, in conjunction with runaway stars, demonstrate that dynamical interactions in such groups are a very important ingredient in star formation., Comment: Accepted by MNRAS Letters

In this paper we provide a comprehensive description of the internal dynamics of G0.253+0.016 (a.k.a. 'the Brick'); one of the most massive and dense molecular clouds in the Galaxy to lack signatures of widespread star formation. As a potential host to a future generation of high-mass stars, understanding largely quiescent molecular clouds like G0.253+0.016 is of critical importance. In this paper, we reanalyse Atacama Large Millimeter Array cycle 0 HNCO $J=4(0,4)-3(0,3)$ data at 3 mm, using two new pieces of software which we make available to the community. First, scousepy, a Python implementation of the spectral line fitting algorithm scouse. Secondly, acorns (Agglomerative Clustering for ORganising Nested Structures), a hierarchical n-dimensional clustering algorithm designed for use with discrete spectroscopic data. Together, these tools provide an unbiased measurement of the line of sight velocity dispersion in this cloud, $\sigma_{v_{los}, {\rm 1D}}=4.4\pm2.1$ kms$^{-1}$, which is somewhat larger than predicted by velocity dispersion-size relations for the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ). The dispersion of centroid velocities in the plane of the sky are comparable, yielding $\sigma_{v_{los}, {\rm 1D}}/\sigma_{v_{pos}, {\rm 1D}}\sim1.2\pm0.3$. This isotropy may indicate that the line-of-sight extent of the cloud is approximately equivalent to that in the plane of the sky. Combining our kinematic decomposition with radiative transfer modelling we conclude that G0.253+0.016 is not a single, coherent, and centrally-condensed molecular cloud; 'the Brick' is not a \emph{brick}. Instead, G0.253+0.016 is a dynamically complex and hierarchically-structured molecular cloud whose morphology is consistent with the influence of the orbital dynamics and shear in the CMZ., Comment: 29 pages, 19 figures, 1 table (including appendix).
