Binhon atrum Pic, 1922, an enigmatic genus and species described in the family Dascillidae based on a single female from Vietnam, is illustrated, diagnosed and formally synonymised with Plastocerus thoracicus Fleutiaux, 1918 (Elateridae: Plastocerinae). The species is recorded from China (Guangxi, Yunnan) for the first time. The taxonomic history of the genus Plastocerus Schaum, 1852 (not Plastocerus LeConte, 1853) with emphasis on its synonyms, is briefly summarised.

The hind wings of all known families and most subfamilies of Coleoptera are illustrated, annotated and discussed utilising the terminology of Kukalova-Peck and Lawrence (2004), with a few changes in nomenclature suggested by the senior author. The beetle families are discussed in 21 groups, based on recent classifications of Coleoptera. For each of these groups, the most recent works on phylogeny and classification are reviewed, and the wing characters are discussed to determine if some of the wing features might support or refute relationships based on recent molecular and morphological analyses. Part 1 includes a general discussion of wing structure divided into the following sections: hind wing fields, veinal systems (including the history of wing nomenclature), wing folding, wing edge and embayments, hinges and bending zones, cross-veins and braces, cells and other landmarks. It is followed by discussion of the first 14 groups (Archostemata to Elateroidea), 15 figures supporting general discussions, and 426 labelled wing images of the discussed groups, representing 380 genera.

The genus Paratrichapus Scott, 1926 currently comprises four species, one described from the Seychelles Islands in the Indian Ocean, one from Indonesia and two from New Zealand. Here, the first Australian species of Paratrichapus are described, as follows: P. australis sp. n., P. burwelli sp. n., P. christmasensis sp. n., P. metallonotum sp. n. and P. peckorum sp. n. Data on their geographic distribution and host fungi are provided, as well as an identification key.

†Tunguskagyrus, a Late Permian beetle fossil, was assigned to the adephagan family Gyrinidae in the original description. This placement was challenged in a recent study, where the genus was considered as part of a broad new concept of the extinct family †Triaplidae and transferred from Adephaga to Archostemata. Even though some structural features deviate from the typical pattern found in extant Gyrinidae, we maintain the placement of †Tunguskagyrus in the stemgroup of this family as the most plausibe interpretation. The suggested taxonomic changes concerning †Triaplidae (and †Schizophoroidea) are invalidated by an insufficient phylogenetic approach and several misinterpretations of the fossil imprints. The arguments are based on 1) general habitual similarity, 2) ubiquitous characters, 3) plesiomorphies, or 4) apomorphic conditions (compared to the Coleopteran groundplan) occurring in many beetle groups, strongly affected by homoplasy. The taxonomic shift of †Tunguskagyrus and the new concept of †Schizophoroidea and †Triaplidae are discarded due to the lack of a defined phylogenetic methodology and synapomorphies.

The Mesozoic fossil record of the family Cerophytidae is critically reviewed. The fossil data is combined with the characters of the recent representatives of Cerophytidae to build a new phylogenetic hypothesis of their relationships. Twenty-three in-group taxa and three out-groups were included in a maximum parsimony cladistic analysis based on 32 adult characters. The resulting tree confirms the family Cerophytidae as a monophylum with two weakly supported clades, segregating most of the extinct Mesozoic and extant genera into separate clades. The new concept of the family Cerophytidae is presented to reconcile characters of the Mesozoic and recent taxa, without recognition of Aphytocerinae Kirejtshuk, 2013. Lebanophytum Kirejtshuk and Azar (=Lebanophytidae Kirejtshuk in Kirejtshuk and Azar, 2013), originally placed in Cerophytidae, is removed from Elateroidea and placed in the cucujoid family Cryptophagidae. The family Lebanophytidae Kirejtshuk in Kirejtshuk and Azar, 2013, based on this genus, becomes a junior synonym of Cryptophagidae Kirby, 1826 (syn. nov.). The two species Praelaterium problematicum Dolin, 1973 and Elaterocoleus oculatus Dolin, 1973, originally included in the family Praelateriidae Dolin, are moved to the family Cerophytidae, and Praelateriidae Dolin, 1973 is regarded as a junior synonym of Cerophytidae Latreille, 1834 (syn. nov.). Jurassophytum cleidecostae Yu, Ślipinski and Pang gen. et sp. nov. from the Middle Jurassic Daohugou beds (Inner Mongolia, northeastern China), and Amberophytum birmanicum Yu, Ślipinski and Pang gen. et sp. nov., Necromeropsis minutus Yu, Ślipinski and Pang gen. et sp. nov., Brachycerophytum cretaceum Yu, Ślipinski and Pang sp. nov. and Cerophytum albertalleni Yu, Ślipinski and Pang sp. nov. from the Upper Cretaceous amber deposits of Myanmar are described and illustrated.

The species name Eucinetus bicolor Lawrence was proposed by Lawrence (2019, p. 155) for a new coleopteran species from eastern Victoria, Australia. However, this name was already used for the Palaearctic Eucinetus bicolor Reitter (1887, p. 514), currently combined as Nycteus bicolor (Reitter, 1887), and thus the names are primary homonyms according to ICZN Articles 53.3 and 57.2 (International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature 1999). To resolve this primary homonymy, in accordance with ICZN Article 60.3 (International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature 1999), Eucinetus linskyi is here proposed as a replacement name for Eucinetus bicolor Lawrence, 2019, non Reitter. This name is a patronym based on Marek Linský of Bratislava, Slovakia, who called my attention to this homonymy.

The generic classification of Lymexylidae is reexamined, particularly with reference to the Australian fauna. The transfer of the Madagascar genus and species Alcestoma serropalpoides Fairmaire (1895) from Melandryidae to Lymexylidae, proposed by Nikitsky in Nikitsky et al. (1998), is confirmed and the genus is considered to be a senior synonym of Protomelittomma Wheeler (1986), syn. n. The occurrence of the genus Alcestoma in Australia is noted and a new species, Alcestoma queenslandicum, sp. n. is described from northern Queensland. The genus Arractocetus Kurosawa (1985) is also recorded for the first time from Australia, but the species is not described. A new genus, Leptonetron, gen. n., is described, based on the type species Atractocerus victoriensis Blackburn, 1891, which is considered to be a senior synonym of Atractocerus tasmaniensis Lea, 1917, syn. n. A key is provided for the Australian genera and species of Lymexylidae and the evolution of the family is briefly discussed.

Dual-purpose crops are grazed during their vegetative phase and allowed to regrow to produce grain. Grazing slow-developing winter cereals (wheat, barley, and triticale) is common, but there is also potential to graze faster-developing spring cereals used in regions with shorter-growing seasons. Defoliation in faster-developing genotypes has risks of larger yield penalties, however, little is known about genotypic characteristics that may improve recovery after grazing. Four experiments examined 7 spring wheat and 2 barley cultivars with differing physiological attributes (phenological development rate, putative capacity to accumulate soluble carbohydrates, and tillering capacity) that may influence the capacity of spring wheat to recover after defoliation. Defoliated and undefoliated crops were compared to assess physiological differences between cultivars including recovery of biomass, leaf area and radiation interception at anthesis, and subsequent crop grain yield and yield components. All genotypes had similar responses to defoliation treatments indicating that the physiological attributes studied played little part in mitigating yield penalties after defoliation. Despite some differences in yield components amongst cultivars, defoliation did not adversely affect cultivars with different yield component combinations under non-water limited conditions. Later and intense defoliation (around GS30/31) resulted in large yield penalties (40%) which reduced both grain number and kernel mass. However, earlier defoliation (before GS28) induced small or insignificant yield penalties. Defoliation often reduced canopy radiation interception and crop biomass at anthesis but this rarely translated into large yield penalties. These studies further demonstrate that shorter season spring cereals can provide valuable forage (up to 1.2 t DM/ha) for grazing during early vegetative growth without inducing large yield penalties. This study suggests that beyond appropriate phenology, there were no other specific characteristics of cultivars that improved the recovery after grazing. Hence farmers don’t need specific dual-purpose cultivars and can still focus on those that optimize grain yield potential for a particular environment and sowing date. The timing and intensity of defoliation appear to be larger drivers of yield recovery in spring cereals and better understanding of these relationships are needed to provide grazing management guidelines that mitigate risk of yield penalties in dual-purpose cereal crops.

The first complete beetle body fossil from the Australian early Late Permian fossil site Belmont is described here, †Ponomarenkia belmonthensis sp. nov., attributed to a new extinct family †Ponomarenkiidae. Shortly before a dramatic biodiversity crisis at the end of the Palaeozoic, it documents profound transitions in the evolution of Coleoptera, today by far the most species-rich group of insects and the largest order of organisms. †Ponomarenkia displays transitional states of several important characters, excluding it from the ancestral earliest stem-group coleopterans (e.g. †Tshecardocoleidae), but also from the four ‘modern’ extant suborders. In contrast to †Tshecardocoleidae, †Permocupedidae and †Rhomboleidae, it lacks the ancestral very broad and apically truncated prosternal process and a broad prothoracic postcoxal bridge, features suggesting a position in Coleoptera sensu stricto, i.e. the crown group of beetles. Palaeoboganium jurassicum gen. et sp. nov. is described from the Middle Jurassic Daohugou formation in northern China. Palaeoboganium jurassicum is the first fossil representative of the enigmatic family Boganiidae, currently known from Gondwanan localities in South Africa, Australia and New Caledonia. Based on a phylogenetic analysis of adult external characters, Palaeoboganium is recovered as the sister group of Paracucujus Sen Gupta & Crowson and Metacucujus Endrödy-Younga & Crowson (Paracucujinae), whose adults pollinate cycads in Australia and South Africa. The genus Omma Newman (type species Omma stanleyi Newman) is revised and redefined based on extant species, with examination of additional fossil species. As a result, only the species O. stanleyi Newman is retained in Omma and a new genus, Beutelius gen. nov. (type species Omma mastersi MacLeay), is described to accommodate the remaining Australian species: B. mastersi (MacLeay), comb. nov., B. sagitta (Neboiss), comb. nov. and B. rutherfordi (Lawrence), comb. nov. A new species, Beutelius reidi sp. nov., is described from Melville Range Nature Reserve in New South Wales, Australia. Diagnoses and new records for extant Ommatinae, including the male of B. sagitta and female of B. mastersi, are provided, as well as a key to extant genera and species.

Two new species of Noteucinetus Bullians & Leschen and 12 new species of Eucinetus Germar are described from continental Australia and Tasmania. A key is given to the two genera and all described Australian species. The following new species are described: Eucinetus bicolor, sp. nov., Eucinetus bicolorellus, sp. nov., Eucinetus brindabellae, sp. nov., Eucinetus dorrigo, sp. nov., Eucinetus limitaris sp. nov., Eucinetus lorien, sp. nov., Eucinetus minutus, sp. nov., Eucinetus nebulosus, sp. nov., Eucinetus protibialis, sp. nov., Eucinetus similis, sp. nov., Eucinetus tasmaniae, sp. nov., Eucinetus tropicus, sp. nov., Noteucinetus ornatus, sp. nov., and Noteucinetus victoriae, sp. nov.

The classification of the subfamily Nitidulinae is reviewed, as it applies to those species occurring within Australia and its territories. Comments are made concerning the currently recognised tribes and generic “complexes” within this subfamily, Australian genera are briefly discussed, with reference to recent and proposed changes in their classification, and several new genera and species are described. The following new taxa are described: Aenigmoronia echinodes, gen. & sp. nov., Australycra similis, sp. nov., Austronitidula multimaculata, gen. & sp. nov., Cychramus splendidus, sp. nov., Lasiodites howensis, sp. nov. and Temnelytron nigrum, gen. & sp. nov. The following synonymy is proposed: Stelidota nigrovaria (Fairmaire, 1849) (= Aethinodes variabile Lea, 1921), syn. nov. The genus Testudoraea Kirejtshuk, 1986, stat. nov., is recognised as a distinct genus, and Perilopsis australis Kirejtshuk, 1990 is considered to be an unnecessary replacement name for Testudoraea flava Kirejtshuk, 1986.

The origin and early evolutionary history of polyphagan beetles have been largely based on evidence from the derived and diverse ‘core Polyphaga’, whereas little is known about the species-poor basal polyphagan lineages, which include Scirtoidea (Clambidae, Decliniidae, Eucinetidae, and Scirtidae) and Derodontidae. Here, we report two new species Acalyptomerus thayerae sp. nov. and Sphaerothorax uenoi sp. nov., both belonging to extant genera of Clambidae, from mid-Cretaceous Burmese amber. Acalyptomerus thayerae has a close affinity to A. herbertfranzi , a species currently occurring in Mesoamerica and northern South America. Sphaerothorax uenoi is closely related to extant species of Sphaerothorax , which are usually collected in forests of Nothofagus of Australia, Chile, and New Zealand. The discovery of two Cretaceous species from northern Myanmar indicates that both genera had lengthy evolutionary histories, originated at least by the earliest Cenomanian, and were probably more widespread than at present. Remarkable morphological similarities between fossil and living species suggest that both genera changed little over long periods of geological time. The long-term persistence of similar mesic microhabitats such as leaf litter may account for the 99 Myr morphological stasis in Acalyptomerus and Sphaerothorax . Additionally, the extinct staphylinoid family Ptismidae is proposed as a new synonym of Clambidae, and its only included species Ptisma zasukhae is placed as incertae sedis within Clambidae.

An addendum to the revision of the Australian ciid fauna contains descriptions of 17 new species, information on recently described Australian species, addition of one described species new to the fauna, and corrections to the previous revision. Keys are provided to the Australian species of Cis, Notapterocis, Orthocis and Paratrichapus. The following new species are described: Cis apodemus, sp. nov., C. bicolorellus, sp. nov., C. brachytrichus, sp. nov., C. christmasensis, sp. nov.; C. densus, sp. nov., C. depressus, sp. nov., C. howensis, sp. nov., C. incomptus, sp. nov., C. latemarginatus, sp. nov., C. macilentus, sp. nov., C. occidentalis, sp. nov., C. prominens, sp. nov., C. pycnostictus, sp. nov., C. rhaibocerus, sp. nov., Notapterocis acutus, sp. nov., N. nesiotes, sp. nov., and Orthocis inordinatus, sp. nov.. Orthocis flavipennis (Pic) is recorded from Australia for the first time, and the Australian record of O. auriculariae Lawrence (Lawrence, 2016) is considered to be based on misidentified specimens of O. flavipennis. Notes are also included on the recently described Australian species by Souza-Gonçalves & Lopes-Andrade (2017): Scolytocis australimontensis and Xylographella frithae, and those described by Souza-Gonçalves et al. (2018): Paratrichapus australis, P. burwelli, P. christmasensis, P. metallonotum and P. peckorum.

The larva of Lepicerus inaequalis Motschulsky was described by Lawrence et al. (2013) based on several early instars and one late instar collected among wet leaves and debris near Gamboa, Panama. The identification was based on collection of an adult Lepicerus in a similar habitat nearby and a combination of characters found in other myxophagan immatures but not known in other beetle larvae. We accepted this identification with some reservations, but a misinterpretation of one feature in the original description plus an unexpected new source of evidence makes it likely that our identification was incorrect. The one misinterpreted feature in this larva was the retraction of the ventral mouthparts. Reexamining the larvae, it was found that a pair of tendons extending mesally from the hypostomal rods were misinterpreted as maxillary bases. The mouthparts are definitely protracted, which is expected with long hypostomal rods. The new source of evidence is somewhat complicated, as explained below.

The genera of the nitiduline tribe Cyllodini occurring in Australia are reviewed and a key is provided for their separation. Each genus is discussed, with an emphasis on the Australian fauna, and an hypothesis is given concerning the source of the introduced Camptodes species and its connection with the program for biological control of Opuntia cacti. The specimens identified by Kirejtshuk (2003) as Macleayania amphotiformis (Reitter, 1880b) were found to represent two widely overlapping species later named by Olliff (1886) in the trogossitid genus Ancyrona. The following new genus and species are included: Cyllopallodes, gen. nov., Gymnocychramus bicolor, sp. nov., Pallodes nigroapicalis, sp. nov. The following new combinations and synonymies are also included: Coxollodes loriai (Grouvelle, 1906) (Pallodes) (= Pallodes opacus Grouvelle, 1906, syn. nov.); Cyllodes ruficeps (Reitter, 1880a) (Strongylus) (= Pseudocamptodes blackburni Grouvelle, 1902, syn. nov.; Pseudocamptodes fulviceps Grouvelle, 1906, syn. nov.); Cyllopallodes limbicollis (Reitter, 1880b) (Pallodes), comb. nov.; Pallodes beccarii Grouvelle, 1906 (= Pallodes gestroi Grouvelle, 1906, syn. nov.); Macleayania amphotiformis (Reitter, 1880b) (= Ancyrona amica Olliff, 1886, syn. nov.); Macleayania vesca (Olliff, 1886) (Ancyrona) comb. nov. The lectotypes of Camptodes humeralis (Brullé, 1842), Coxollodes loriai (Grouvelle, 1906), C. opacus (Grouvelle, 1906), Cyllodes fulvipes (Grouvelle, 1906), Pallodes beccarii Grouvelle, 1906, P. gestroi Grouvelle, 1906, and P. misellus Grouvelle, 1906 are designated. Information on and syntype information from Macleayania amica (Olliff, 1886), M. vesca (Olliff, 1886), Cyllodes blackburni (Grouvelle, 1906) and C. rufipes (Reitter, 1880a) are given.

This three-volume series represents a comprehensive treatment of the beetles of Australia, a relatively under-studied fauna that includes many unusual and unique lineages found nowhere else on Earth. Volume 2 contains 36 chapters, providing critical information and identification keys to the genera of the Australian beetle families included in suborders Archostemata, Myxophaga, Adephaga and several groups of Polyphaga (Scirtoidea, Hydrophiloidea, Scarabaeoidea, Buprestoidea and Tenebrionidae). Each chapter is richly illustrated in black and white drawings and photographs. The book also includes colour habitus figures for about 1000 Australian beetle genera and subgenera belonging to the families treated in this volume. This volume is a truly international collaborative effort, as the chapters have been written by 23 contributors from Australia, China, Czech Republic, Germany, Italy, Poland and USA.

OnysiusBroun, 1886, is transferred from the endemic New Zealand Chalcodryidae to Promecheilidae, reducing the number of genera of the former to two (Chalcodrya and Philpottia). Onysius shares several adult characters with Promecheilidae, including the abdominal ventrites 3 and 4 not connate and the tegmen subdivided into a basale and apicale (larvae are unknown). A key to the world genera of Promecheilidae is included.

Fossil Artematopodidae are rarely collected and previously confined to middle Eocene Baltic amber. Here we report the first definitive artematopodid, Sinobrevipogon jurassicus gen. et sp.n., from the Middle Jurassic Daohugou beds (c. 165 Ma) in Inner Mongolia, northeastern China. It exhibits a number of defining features of Artematopodidae, including paired carinae on prosternum and an internal apical interlocking tongue on the ventral side of each elytron. However, it differs from any modern Artematopodidae by having the mesocoxal cavitiy closed by the mesepimeron and the anterolateral edge of metanepisternum. The discovery of this new genus represents the earliest fossil record for Artematopodidae, highlighting the antiquity of the family. The systematic positions of Forticatinius Tan & Ren and Tarsomegamerus Zhang are discussed, and the latter is formally transferred to Artematopodidae. Phylogenetic relationships within Artematopodidae were investigated to elucidate the relationships between the two Jurassic genera and Recent genera. Eleven in-group taxa and two out-groups were included in a cladistic analysis based on 30 adult characters; the resulting tree recovered the family Artematopodidae in three clades: (i) Electribius authority, (ii) Ctesibius authority + Brevipogon authority + Sinobrevipogon + Tarsomegamerus and (iii) the remaining Recent genera, including Allopogonia authority.

A phylogeny of the cucujoid family Boganiidae (Coleoptera) is inferred for the first time based on a parsimony analysis of 102 morphological characters (70 adult and 32 larval). The analysis resulted in a monophyletic Boganiidae divided into two main clades, Boganiinae and Paracucujinae, each supported by a series of synapomorphies. The Boganiinae genera recovered were Afroboganium Endrody-Younga & Crowson and Boganium Sen Gupta & Crowson, whereas Paracucujinae includes Paracucujus Sen Gupta & Crowson, Metacucujus Endrody-Younga & Crowson, Athertonium Crowson and the New Caledonian Dzumacium caledonicum gen.n., sp.n. New specimen data and biological information for the Australian taxa are summarized with overviews on biogeography and comments on the fossil Jurassic Parandrexis Martynov (Parandrexidae). Two new species of Boganium, primarily from the Australian mallee are described: B. malleense sp.n. and B. medioflavum sp.n. Boganium malleense is recorded from flowers of Eucalyptus gracilis F. (Myrtaceae). Adults and larvae of Paracucujus rostratus Sen Gupta & Crowson are redescribed. Athertonium parvum Crowson is redescribed and Athertonium williamsi sp.n. is described from coastal New South Wales. Several host records for Athertonium are also presented.

In order to infer phylogenetic relationships within the extraordinarily speciesrich order Coleoptera, a cladistic analysis is performed, in which 516 adult and larval morphological characters are scored for 359 beetle taxa, representing 314 families or subfamilies plus seven outgroup taxa representing seven holometabolan orders. Many morphological features are discussed at length with accompanying illustrations, and an attempt is made to homologize these and employ a uniform set of terms throughout the order. The resulting data matrix is analyzed using the parsimony ratchet in conjunction with implied weighting. The resulting most parsimonious tree found the order Strepsiptera to be sister to Coleoptera, each of the four coleopteran suborders to be monophyletic and subordinal relationships as follows: (Archostemata + Adephaga) + (Myxophaga + Polyphaga), but without significant support for either clade. The topology of the remainder of the tree is consistent with many prior molecular and morphological analyses, with the monophyly of superfamilies Hydrophiloidea (sensu lato), Scarabaeoidea and Curculionoidea and many currently recognized families and subfamilies are well supported, with weaker support for Elateroidea, Cucujiformia and Phytophaga. External and internal features of the male postabdomen of Tetraphalerus bruchi were examined with a broad spectrum of morphological techniques and are described in detail. The conditions found in males of Tetraphalerus are compared to those in other archostematan beetles and members of other coleopteran suborders. The far-reaching reduction of the sternite I, structural modifications of sternite II, the retracted condition of the terminal segments, and ventromedially fused apodemes arising from the anterior margin of tergite IX are likely autapomorphies of Coleoptera. The male postabdomen of Tetraphalerus is less derived than in most other groups of Coleoptera. The sclerotized elements are symmetrical. In contrast to earlier statements on the archostematan male genital apparatus a distinctly developed, sclerotized basal piece is present. The aedeagus is trilobed and all elements of the copulatory apparatus are distinct. The muscular equipment is simple and moderately developed. All muscles (except the transverse muscles 61 and 62) occur pairwise and symmetrically. The distinct increase of the number of postabdominal muscles in representatives of the higher lineages of Coleoptera is likely linked with a torsion of the copulatory apparatus, which also results in asymmetries of the sclerotised parts. The testes of Tetraphalerus are long, multi-coiled tubes like in other archostematans, Myxophaga (Torridincola) and Adephaga. The presence of a deep notch on the parameres is a synapomorphy of Tetraphalerus and Omma. Curved parameres, a shortened distal portion, and a distinctly shortented penis are potential synapomorphies of Omma rutherfordi and Omma mastersi. The large size of the sclerotized part of the phallobase ('basal piece') and the division of the sclerotization of sternum IX are potential groundplan autapomorphies of Archostemata, with secondary modification of the latter feature in Cupedidae. The reduced condition of the sclerotization of sternum VIII is an apomorphic condition which has likely evolved independently in Tetraphalerus and Paracupes. Further anatomical investigation of the male genital apparatus of Coleoptera and holometabolous insects in general is required for a reliable morphological and phylogenetic interpretation. Concerning the presence or absence of particular sclerotizations (e.g., 'basal piece' of phallobase) histological section series and Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy can add more precise information to what can be observed using permanent preparations of macerated specimens. BACKGROUND Patients with arthrogryposis often report decreased ambulation and physical activity. Given that skeletal mineralisation is responsive to force, we identified the need to characterize bone mineral density and functional measures in this population, and conducted a cross-sectional study to establish a reference for future investigations. METHODS Thirty consecutive patients aged 5 to 18 years with either the diagnosis of amyoplasia or nonsyndromic arthrogryposis with predominantly lower extremity involvement underwent bone densitometry testing, and lumbar spine Z-scores were calculated against an age and sex-matched control population as is customary in children. Pediatric outcomes data collection instrument (PODCI) and functional independence measure for Children (WeeFIM) assessment forms were completed. Mean Z-scores, PODCI, and WeeFIM scores were calculated. We infer the first phylogenetic hypothesis for Latridiidae Erichson (Coleoptera: Cucujoidea). Portions of seven genes (18S ribosomal DNA, 28S ribosomal DNA, 12S ribosomal DNA, 16S ribosomal DNA, cytochrome c oxidase I and II and histone III) were analysed. Twenty-seven latridiid species were included, representing both subfamilies and more than half of the currently recognized genera. Eight outgroup taxa from other families of Cucujoidea were included. Parsimony and partitioned Bayesian analyses were performed on the combined dataset. In both phylogenetic analyses, the enigmatic Akalyptoischion Andrews (Latridiinae) was recovered outside of Latridiidae. The subfamilies Corticariinae and Latridiinae (without Akalyptoischion) were each recovered as monophyletic in both analyses. A new family, Akalyptoischiidae fam.n. is erected based on the results of the phylogenetic study and further support from adult morphology, key features of which are illustrated.

Purpose The purpose of this study was to present the authors' experience with corrective osteotomies of the forearm for supination contracture in children. Methods Fourteen patients with supination contracture of the forearm due to brachial plexus lesion (11), poliomyelitis residuals (2), or Monteggia fracture malunion (1) underwent distal ulnar osteotomy without fixation and subsequent midradial osteotomy with plate fixation to produce a position of greater pronation. A minimum of 6 months' follow-up was required to be included in the series. Results Ten boys and 4 girls whose mean age was 11 years underwent surgery between 1998 and 2006 to correct a supination contracture. The mean preoperative contracture measured 80 degrees of supination. The final mean postoperative correction was 104 degrees, whereas the final mean position of pronation was 24 degrees. Conclusions Distal ulnar and midradial osteotomies are effective in the treatment of supination deformities of the forearm with little risk of complication or need for additional surgery. Radial fixation is important, but ulnar fixation is not required. Both osteotomies must be complete before plate fixation of the radius to realize maximal correction. Level of evidence Level IV.

Prionocerites tattriei gen. and sp. nov. (Insecta: Coleoptera: Cleroidea: Prionoceridae) are described from Eocene amber associated with the Hat Creek Coal Formation, Kamloops Group, British Columbia, Canada. This is the first occurrence of the family Prionoceridae in the fossil record and from the Western Hemisphere.

Here we present a phylogeny of beetles (Insecta: Coleoptera) based on DNA sequence data from eight nuclear genes, including six single-copy nuclear protein-coding genes, for 367 species representing 172 of 183 extant families. Our results refine existing knowledge of relationships among major groups of beetles. Strepsiptera was confirmed as sister to Coleoptera and each of the suborders of Coleoptera was recovered as monophyletic. Interrelationships among the suborders, namely Polyphaga (Adephaga (Archostemata, Myxophaga)), in our study differ from previous studies. Adephaga comprised two clades corresponding to Hydradephaga and Geadephaga. The series and superfamilies of Polyphaga were mostly monophyletic. The traditional Cucujoidea were recovered in three distantly related clades. Lymexyloidea was recovered within Tenebrionoidea. Several of the series and superfamilies of Polyphaga received moderate to maximal clade support in most analyses, for example Buprestoidea, Chrysomeloidea, Coccinelloidea, Cucujiformia, Curculionoidea, Dascilloidea, Elateroidea, Histeroidea and Hydrophiloidea. However, many of the relationships within Polyphaga lacked compatible resolution under maximum-likelihood and Bayesian inference, and/or lacked consistently strong nodal support. Overall, we recovered slightly younger estimated divergence times than previous studies for most groups of beetles. The ordinal split between Coleoptera and Strepsiptera was estimated to have occurred in the Early Permian. Crown Coleoptera appeared in the Late Permian, and only one or two lineages survived the end-Permian mass extinction, with stem group representatives of all four suborders appearing by the end of the Triassic. The basal split in Polyphaga was estimated to have occurred in the Triassic, with the stem groups of most series and superfamilies originating during the Triassic or Jurassic. Most extant families of beetles were estimated to have Cretaceous origins. Overall, Coleoptera experienced an increase in diversification rate compared to the rest of Neuropteroidea. Furthermore, 10 family-level clades, all in suborder Polyphaga, were identified as having experienced significant increases in diversification rate. These include most beetle species with phytophagous habits, but also several groups not typically or primarily associated with plants. Most of these groups originated in the Cretaceous, which is also when a majority of the most species-rich beetle families first appeared. An additional 12 clades showed evidence for significant decreases in diversification rate. These clades are species-poor in the Modern fauna, but collectively exhibit diverse trophic habits. The apparent success of beetles, as measured by species numbers, may result from their associations with widespread and diverse substrates - especially plants, but also including fungi, wood and leaf litter - but what facilitated these associations in the first place or has allowed these associations to flourish likely varies within and between lineages. Our results provide a uniquely well-resolved temporal and phylogenetic framework for studying patterns of innovation and diversification in Coleoptera, and a foundation for further sampling and resolution of the beetle tree of life., Facultad de Ciencias Naturales y Museo

The former family Trachelostenidae is returned to tribal status in Tenebrionidae-Tenebrioninae and reconstituted to include Trachelostenus Solier, 1851 of southern Chile, currently in a separate family Trachelostenidae, Myrmecodema Gebien, 1943 of central Chile, currently in Stenochiinae-Cnodalonini, and Leaus MatthewsLawrence, 1992 of eastern Australia, currently in Tenebrioninae-Titaenini. The three genera are redescribed in both the adult and larval stages. Three new species: Leaus tropicalis sp.n. L. monteithi sp. n. and L. elusus sp. n. are described. Trachelostenine larval characters are compared with those of related tribes of Tenebrioninae: Titaenini, Heleini, Helopini, Helopinini, Ulomini and Toxicini. The Chilean genus Homocyrtus Dejean is briefly discussed and left incertae sedis in Tenebrionidae. Examination of Lagriola Kirsch (Lagriinae), originally associated with Trachelostenus, leads to the following name changes: Lagriola Kirsch, 1873 = Paratenetus Spinola, 1844, syn. n.; Paratenetus operosus (Kirsch, 1873) (Lagriola), comb. n.; Paratenetus championi, nom. n. for P. denticulatus Champion, 1886 nec P. denticulatus (Kirsch, 1873) (Lagriola) comb. n.

A larva is described which is presumed to be that of Lepicerus inaequalis Motschulsky based on several probable first instars and one later instar collected a few miles from and in a similar habitat to adult specimens of this species. The association is additionally based on several features also occurring in other known myxophagan larvae. A key is provided comparing these larvae with those of the other three families of Myxophaga.

A new genus of Ptilodactylidae, Lycomimus gen. n., based on L. bejsaki sp. n. from northern New South Wales and southern Queensland, Australia, is described. The genus is compared with other known ptilodactylid genera, and a key is provided to the genera occurring in Australia.
