We report paleomagnetic results from the Jurassic to Lower Cretaceous continental sedimentary succession exposed in the eastern limb of the Los Yariguíes anticlinorium, Eastern Cordillera, Colombia. About 820 m of a stratigraphic section of the upper part of the Girón Group (Angostura del Río Lebrija and Los Santos Formations) was sampled to construct a magnetic polarity stratigraphy. A total of 199 independent samples that yield interpretable and acceptable data have a characteristic remanent magnetization component (ChRM) isolated between 400 °C and 680 °C in progressive thermal demagnetization. Demagnetization behavior and rock magnetic properties are interpreted to indicate that hematite is the principal magnetization carrier with a possible contribution by magnetite in some parts of the section. After tilt correction, 123 samples are of normal polarity (declination [D] = 44.9°, inclination [I] = +9.7°, R = 110.64, k = 9.87, and α95 = 4.3°), and the other 76 accepted samples are of reverse polarity (D = 216.4°, I = −6.1°, R = 68.29, k = 9.72, and α95 = 5.5°). The statistical reversal test conducted on virtual geomagnetic poles is positive (class B). Based on paleontologic age estimates for the Cumbre and Rosablanca Formations, we assume a Berriasian age for the Los Santos Formation. The magnetostratigraphic data from the Girón Group strata are interpreted to suggest an age for the sampled part of the section between early Kimmeridgian and early Valanginian (ca. 157–139 Ma). The age of the Angostura del Río Lebrija Formation is estimated as between early Kimmeridgian and early Tithonian (ca. 157–146.5 Ma). The age of the Los Santos Formation is estimated between early Tithonian and early Valanginian (146.5–139.3 Ma). With our proposed, but nonunique, correlation with the Geomagnetic Polarity Time Scale, the Jurassic-Cretaceous boundary is interpreted to be located within the Los Santos Formation. The Girón Group is characterized by two periods of high (>8 cm/k.y.) and two periods of low (< 2 cm/k.y.) sedimentation rates. An inferred clockwise rotation of ∼44°, based on paleomagnetic declination data from the Girón Group, is similar to rotation estimates reported in some previous studies in the general area, and this facet of deformation could be related to local and regional response to displacement along regional-scale strike-slip faults.

The contact between the Daptocephalus to Lystrosaurus declivis (previously Lystrosaurus) Assemblage Zones (AZs) described from continental deposits of the Karoo Basin was commonly interpreted to represent an extinction crisis associated with the end-Permian mass-extinction event at ca. 251.901 ± 0.024 Ma. This terrestrial extinction model is based on several sections in the Eastern Cape and Free State Provinces of South Africa. Here, new stratigraphic and paleontologic data are presented for the Eastern Cape Province, in geochronologic and magnetostratigraphic context, wherein lithologic and biologic changes are assessed over a physically correlated stratigraphy exceeding 4.5 km in distance. Spatial variation in lithofacies demonstrates the gradational nature of lithostratigraphic boundaries and depositional trends. This pattern is mimicked by the distribution of vertebrates assigned to the Daptocephalus and L. declivis AZs where diagnostic taxa of each co-occur as lateral equivalents in landscapes dominated by a Glossopteris flora. High-precision U-Pb zircon (chemical abrasion-isotope dilution-thermal ionization mass spectrometry) age results indicate maximum Changhsingian depositional dates that can be used as approximate tie points in our stratigraphic framework, which is supported by a magnetic polarity stratigraphy. The coeval nature of diagnostic pre- and post-extinction vertebrate taxa demonstrates that the L. declivis AZ did not replace the Daptocephalus AZ stratigraphically, that a biotic crisis and turnover likely is absent, and a reevaluation is required for the utilization of these biozones here and globally. Based on our data set, we propose a multidisciplinary approach to correlate the classic Upper Permian localities of the Eastern Cape Province with the Free State Province localities, which demonstrates their time-transgressive nature.

Nineteen sites with 198 oriented-core samples have been collected from the Upper Permian-Lower Triassic volcanic rocks of Vien Nam Formation at Quynh Nhai locality, Son La Province, northwestern Vietnam. The characteristic remanent magnetization components carried by magnetite and hematite were successfully isolated from secondary components reveal a mean paleomagnetic direction Ds = 48.3°, Is = -10.0°, a95 = 8.0°, corresponding to a virtual geomagnetic pole located at l = 35.7°N, f = 217.4°E and a paleo-latitude of study area situated at 5.1°S during the Permian time. Compared with the Late Permian-Early Triassic pole of the South China Block (SCB), the data show that crustal elements of NW Vietnam have been close to, but not unequivocally a coherent part of the SCB, since the Late Permian. Development of the parallel NW-SE striking Song Ma and Song Chay orogenic belts did not involve the closure of wide (> 500 km) ocean basins.

Reliable ages of proximal conglomerates in the Cordilleran foreland basin that are associated with emplacement and erosion of major thrust sheets are essential for reconstructing the kinematic history of the Sevier fold-thrust belt. Although these conglomerates have been dated by palynology, their absolute ages have been difficult to determine because of their coarse-grained texture and a lack of marine interbeds and tuffaceous deposits. We collected sets of oriented samples from outcrops in northeastern Utah, USA, to construct an overall magnetic polarity stratigraphy that can be correlated to the geomagnetic polarity time scale (GPTS). We sampled fine-grained, hematitic interbeds in the Upper Cretaceous Echo Canyon Conglomerate and Weber Canyon Conglomerate. Common paleomagnetic and rock magnetic analyses were conducted, and several rock magnetic results indicated that the dominant magnetic carriers in these weakly magnetized rocks are hematite and very subordinate magnetite/titanomagnetite/maghemite and goethite. Demagnetization results show that hematitic, fine-grained sandstone to siltstone intervals carry a geologically stable magnetization with directions and polarity consistent with the Late Cretaceous geomagnetic field. A small percentage of samples carry a low laboratory unblocking temperature secondary overprint residing primarily in goethite. Magnetic polarity results indicate that the Echo Canyon Conglomerate is exclusively of normal polarity and that the younger Weber Canyon Conglomerate is of normal polarity in its lowermost part, reverse polarity in the middle, and normal polarity in the upper part of the sequence. The new data indicate that these coarse-grained strata were most likely deposited over the time span of the magnetic polarity Chron (C) 34n to C33r interval and the younger C33r to C33n interval; the former interval includes the Santonian-Campanian stage boundary (ca. 83.4 Ma/83.1 Ma). Palynological data suggest that these rocks span Coniacian-Santonian time (ca. 89–84 Ma); thus, the most parsimonious correlation of the normal polarity magnetozone of the Echo Canyon Conglomerate is with the youngest part of C34n Superchron, which is of ca. 30 Ma duration (ca. 115 Ma to 83.4 Ma/83.1 Ma). The normal polarity magnetozone of the lower part of the younger Weber Canyon Conglomerate likely correlates to the youngest part of C34n, whereas the reverse and normal magnetozone from the middle and upper parts of the Weber Canyon Conglomerate likely correlate to C33r and C33n, respectively. We infer that the Santonian-Campanian boundary resides in the lower Weber Canyon Conglomerate, which implies that deposition of the unit started prior to the C34n/C33r boundary age (ca. 83.4 Ma/83.1 Ma) and continued through the C33r and C33n chrons. Sediment provenance data and growth structures tie the Echo Canyon and Weber Canyon Conglomerates to emplacement of the Crawford thrust sheet. Based on the magnetic polarity data, as constrained by the biostratigraphic age estimates from these synorogenic deposits, we hypothesize that the principal displacement along the Crawford thrust started during the Coniacian (>C34n/C33r boundary age) and continued into the middle Campanian (

The Upper Triassic Chinle Formation is a critical non-marine archive of low-paleolatitude biotic and environmental change in southwestern North America. The well-studied and highly fossiliferous Chinle strata at Petrified Forest National Park (PFNP), Arizona, preserve a biotic turnover event recorded by vertebrate and palynomorph fossils, which has been alternatively hypothesized to coincide with tectonically driven climate change or with the Manicouagan impact event at ca. 215.5 Ma. Previous outcrop-based geochronologic age constraints are difficult to put in an accurate stratigraphic framework because lateral facies changes and discontinuous outcrops allow for multiple interpretations. A major goal of the Colorado Plateau Coring Project (CPCP) was to retrieve a continuous record in unambiguous superposition designed to remedy this situation. We sampled the 520-m-long core 1A of the CPCP to develop an accurate age model in unquestionable superposition by combining U-Pb zircon ages and magnetostratigraphy. From 13 horizons of volcanic detritus-rich siltstone and sandstone, we screened up to ∼300 zircon crystals per sample using laser ablation–inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry and subsequently analyzed up to 19 crystals of the youngest age population using the chemical abrasion–isotope dilution–thermal ionization mass (CA-ID-TIMS) spectrometry method. These data provide new maximum depositional ages for the top of the Moenkopi Formation (ca. 241 Ma), the lower Blue Mesa Member (ca. 222 Ma), and the lower (ca. 218 to 217 Ma) and upper (ca. 213.5 Ma) Sonsela Member. The maximum depositional ages obtained for the upper Chinle Formation fall well within previously proposed age constraints, whereas the maximum depositional ages for the lower Chinle Formation are relatively younger than previously proposed ages from outcrop; however, core to outcrop stratigraphic correlations remain uncertain. By correlating our new ages with the magnetostratigraphy of the core, two feasible age model solutions can be proposed. Model 1 assumes that the youngest, coherent U-Pb age clusters of each sample are representative of the maximum depositional ages and are close to (227 Ma) in age, and hence the biotic turnover event cannot be correlated to the Carnian–Norian boundary but is rather a mid-Norian event. Our age models demonstrate the powers, but also the challenges, of integrating detrital CA-ID-TIMS ages with magnetostratigraphic data to properly interpret complex sedimentary sequences.

The current model for the end-Permian terrestrial ecosystem crisis holds that systematic loss exhibited by an abrupt turnover from the Daptocephalus to the Lystrosaurus Assemblage Zone (AZ; Karoo Basin, South Africa) is time equivalent with the marine Permian–Triassic boundary (PTB). The marine event began at 251.941 ± 0.037 Ma, with the PTB placed at 251.902 ± 0.024 Ma (2σ). Radio-isotopic dates over this interval in the Karoo Basin were limited to one high resolution ash-fall deposit in the upper Daptocephalus AZ (253.48 ± 0.15 (2σ) Ma) with no similar age constraints for the overlying biozone. Here, we present the first U-Pb CA-ID-TIMS zircon age (252.24 ± 0.11 (2σ) Ma) from a pristine ash-fall deposit in the Karoo Lystrosaurus AZ. This date confirms that the lower exposures of the Lystrosaurus AZ are of latest Permian age and that the purported turnover in the basin preceded the end-Permian marine event by over 300 ka, thus refuting the previously used stratigraphic marker for terrestrial end-Permian extinction., The end-Permian is associated with major changes in both marine and terrestrial biodiversity. Here, Gastaldo et al. present high resolution dating of the Lystrosaurus Assemblage Zone in the Karoo Basin, South Africa, demonstrating that the marine crisis did not mirror a coeval event on land.

The relative roles of tectonics and global climate in forming the hydroclimate for widespread eolian deposition remain controversial. Oligocene loess has been previously documented in the interior of western United States, but its spatiotemporal pattern and causes remain undetermined. Through new stratigraphic record documentation and data compilation, we reveal the time transgressive occurrence of loess beginning in the latest Eocene in the central Rocky Mountains, that expands eastward to the Great Plains across the Eocene-Oligocene transition (EOT). Our climate simulations show that moderate uplift of the southern North America Cordillera initiated drying in the Cordilleran hinterland and immediate foreland, forming a potential dust source and sink, and global cooling at the EOT expanded the drying and eolian deposition eastward by causing retreat of the North American Monsoon. Therefore, the eolian deposition reflects continental aridification induced both by regional tectonism and global climate change during the late Paleogene.

The initiation of intraslab earthquakes and their location depend on multiple factors such as slab heterogeneity, pre-subduction anisotropy, thermal parameters and the metamorphic history of the lithosphere slab. As a result, these failures occur over a range of temperature-pressure conditions through different mechanisms. Therefore, to unravel the intricacy of intraslab seismicity, it is crucial to investigate the details of failure mechanisms using multiple datasets, at different scales. Details on rupture mechanisms are now accessible through advanced, high-resolution seismologic approaches. However, seismologic archives are limited to events of the past few decades. Further, quasi-synchronous multiple-source mechanisms can be challenging to distinguish from seismic data only. Alternatively, the geologic records of intraslab seismicity, preserved in pseudotachylytes, provide a higher spatiotemporal resolution than seismic data, resulting in direct insight into the rupture triggering mechanisms.. These fault rocks also inform, over the geologic timescale, on the integrated deformation history of the slab. Despite this fact, only a handful of natural exposures have been investigated, and these include localities in Corsica, Italy, Zambia, and Japan. In addition, despite some strain rate limitations, deformation experiments, conducted using a wide range of starting materials and over broad pressure-temperature conditions, may further constrain the causes of intraslab rupture. These experiments, being intrinsically performed on relatively small rock volumes cannot capture large scale aspects of intraslab deformation. Finally, numerical modelling may overcome some of the above limitations as long as accurate and realistic parameters are chosen. Ultimately, our review shows that to fill the gap in our knowledge of intraslab seismicity, we need a multiscale-multimethod approach that integrates seismologic, geologic, experimental and numerical perspectives.

The vertebrate-fossil record in the Karoo Basin has served as the accepted model for how terrestrial ecosystems responded to the end-Permian extinction event. A database of several hundred specimens, placed into generalized stratigraphies, has formed the basis of a step-wise extinction scenario interpreted by other workers as spanning the upper Daptocephalus (=Dicynodon) to Lystrosaurus Assemblage Zones (AZ). Seventy-three percent of specimens used to construct the published model originate from three farms in the Free State: Bethel, Heldenmoed, and Donald 207 (Fairydale). The current contribution empirically tests: (1) the stratigraphic resolution of the vertebrate record on these farms; (2) whether a sharp boundary exists that delimits the vertebrate assemblage zones in these classic localities; and (3) if the Lystrosaurus AZ is of early Triassic age. We have used a multi-disciplinary approach, combining lithostratigraphy, magnetostratigraphy, vertebrate biostratigraphy, and palynology, to test these long-held assumptions. Previously reported vertebrate-collection sites have been physically placed into a litho- and magnetostratigraphic framework on the Bethel and Heldenmoed farms. The reported assemblage-zone boundary is used as the datum against which the stratigraphic position of vertebrates is compared and a preliminary magnetostratigraphy constructed. We find specimens of the Daptocephalus AZ originate in the Lystrosaurus AZ (as currently defined) and vice versa, and discrepancies between reported and field-checked stratigraphic positions below or above the assemblage-zone boundary often exceed 30 m. Hence, the utility of the data set in defining a sharp or abrupt biozone boundary is questionable. We further demonstrate the presence of a stratigraphically thick reverse polarity magnetozone that encompasses the reported assemblage-zone boundary, implying that these rocks are not correlative with the end-Permian event, which is reported to lie in a normal polarity chron. A latest Permian age is supported by palynological data from the Lystrosaurus AZ on the Donald 207 (Fairydale) farm, with equivalence to Australian (APP602) and Eastern Cape Province assemblages. We conclude that the turnover from the Daptocephalus to Lystrosaurus Assemblage Zones is more protracted than envisioned, it is not coincident with the end-Permian event as recognized in the marine realm, and little evidence exists in support of a three-phased extinction model based on vertebrate assemblages in the Karoo Basin.

The stratigraphic section at Bethulie, South Africa, is reported to contain the vertebrate-defined Permian–Triassic boundary succession in the terrestrial realm of the Karoo Basin. The model of vertebrate turnover, from the Daptocephalus to Lystrosaurus Assemblage Zones, tightly constrains the boundary sequence to a short stratigraphic interval where siltstone color begins to change from greenish gray to grayish red, the latter color interpreted to be a consequence of aridification. The biological response to this facies change has been termed “the Great Dying,” and the sedimentary rocks that are preserved are ascribed to a playa lake depositional setting. This drying event is believed to be contemporaneous across the basin, although previous studies have shown that the facies appears at multiple horizons at all purported Permian–Triassic boundary sections in the basin. Here, we report results of a multidisciplinary effort to characterize the vertebrate assemblage-zone boundary interval exposed at Bethulie using the lithostratigraphic, petrographic, geochemical, and rock magnetic properties of these rocks. In this stratigraphic succession at its “type” location, the 3-m thick assemblage-zone boundary interval is distinguished by thick beds of greenish-gray, greenish-gray mottled to grayish-red, and grayish-red siltstone, all of which change facies characteristics laterally along strike. Specifically, about 220 m to the southeast of the type section, sediments lose all grayish-red coloration, whereas the interval becomes laminated to the northwest. Petrographically, most siltstone is homogenized, with few burrows and small-scale cross-bedded structures with mudchips. There are no gypsiferous or calcareous beds, nor is there evidence of disturbed structures, authigenic breccia, or pseudomorphs associated with dessication. Mean elemental composition of both greenish-gray and grayish-red beds are indistinguishable, geochemically, and both are dominated by illite and chlorite clay species. Mossbauer spectroscopic analyses reveal the presence of a small concentration of fine-grained hematite in the grayish-red siltstone, with its presence mainly found as coatings on clay minerals. Rock magnetic experiments (isothermal remanent magnetization, acquisition and backfield DC demagnetization; magnetic hysteresis; susceptibility vs. temperature) yield data that demonstrate no essential differences between the different colored siltstones. And, both lithologies host mangnetite/maghematite and hematite. Our results do not support the previous interpretation that this inferred Permian–Triassic boundary interval represents the onset of playa lake deposits under conditions of aridification. Rather, our evidence supports the existence of a “wet” landscape at what is considered the Daptocephalus/Lystrosaurus assemblage-zone boundary.

The type-section of the Blackwater Draw Formation (BDF) consists of a series of five paleosol horizons developed on eolian deposits and an overlying surficial soil. Previous work has shown that magnetic properties (e.g., χ, ARM, and IRM) as a function of depth in this type-section, display both magnetically enhanced and magnetically depleted signals for different paleosols. To better understand the magnetic mineralogy responsible for these varying responses, various rock-magnetic experiments, scanning electron microscopy, and Mössbauer spectroscopy were conducted on representative samples from the six soil units which constitute the BDF type-section. Our results show that sub-micron hematite [with a minor contribution from single-domain sized hematite (Hc = ∼500 mT) dominates all the soils in terms of weight percent concentration. Whereas, low coercivity (Hc = ∼35 mT or less) magnetite/maghemitized-magnetite grains, largely in the PSD state (Mr/Ms=∼0.14 +/– 0.03588, Hcr/Hc=∼2.68 +/– 0.298789), dominate the magnetic signal. Magnetically depleted soils show a relatively higher proportion of goethite, while magnetically enhanced soils show an increased contribution from SP/SSD magnetite/maghemite phases.By combining our data-set with geochemically-derived climofunctions, we have correlated the magnetically preserved, depleted, and enhanced sections of the type-section to three distinct environmental phases (I-III). The basal sediments of Phase I displays relatively homogenous (neither enhanced nor depleted) magnetic properties due to relatively arid conditions and minimal alteration of southerly derive eolian sands. Conversely, Phase II-III represents a change in weathering intensities and provenance, resulting in a mix of southerly derived sands and northerly derived silts. Phase II, experienced greater precipitation levels, resulting in the dissolution of Fe-oxide phases and thus magnetic depletion. The uppermost Phase III experienced intermediate precipitation intensities resulting in magnetic enhancement.Using previously published age models we tentatively interpret these changing environmental conditions to be influenced by the Middle-Pleistocene Transition (1.2-0.7 Ma), where the Earth’s climatic cycles shifted from a ∼41 kyr to ∼100 kyr cycles. However, ambiguities persist due to uncertainties in the currently published age model. Due to the complexity of the magnetic signal, we recommend future studies utilize a holistic approach, incorporating rock-magnetic, geochemical, and microscopy observations for more accurate reconstruction of regional paleoenvironments.

The mid-Pleistocene transition is a time interval between ca. 1.2 and 0.7 Ma during which a shift occurred from ~41 k.y. glacial-interglacial cycles to ~100 k.y. cycles. Although the mid-Pleistocene transition has been well documented in global marine records, its effects in continental environments, including North America, are incompletely understood owing to the paucity of terrestrial sediment records spanning the entire Quaternary. A notable exception is the ca. 1.4 Ma and younger Blackwater Draw Formation, an extensive eolian sequence on the Southern High Plains of the United States. Intervals of the Blackwater Draw Formation section that are inferred to span the mid-Pleistocene transition can be divided into pre–, syn–, and post–mid-Pleistocene transition parts. Weathering profiles in the pre–mid-Pleistocene transition section are dominated by weakly developed soils formed in arid environments, as evidenced by well-expressed pedogenic carbonate horizons, lack of clay formation during hydrolysis, and magnetically soft, coarse-grained magnetite/maghemite populations. Conversely, the syn– and post–mid-Pleistocene transition intervals demonstrate an increase in weathering intensity by an abrupt increase in clay content formed in part by hydrolysis of feldspars, soil profiles that demonstrate leaching and illuviation, and a fining-upward grain size of the magnetite/maghemite population. Sedimentologic, geochemical, and rock-magnetic data are consistent with a southern and coarser sediment source derived from the Pecos River drainage prior to the mid-Pleistocene transition, followed by a mixture of northern and southern sources during and after the mid-Pleistocene transition. Overall, our results indicate that pre–mid-Pleistocene transition conditions on the Southern High Plains were arid with wind energy sufficient to mobilize sand sheets out of the Pecos River and deposit them on the plateau. The syn– and post–mid-Pleistocene transition environments reflect somewhat wetter conditions and potentially an influx of silt from the north, in addition to continued sand derived from the Pecos River valley. The wetter conditions and silt influx may have resulted from longer-lived and more robust glacial activity in the Northern Hemisphere that characterized the post–mid-Pleistocene transition Earth system.

Based on field geology, seismic reflection profiling data and isopach maps, the structural deformation pattern, timing of deformation, and mechanism of formation of the western part of the NE Qaidam Basin (including the Pingtai Uplift, Lenghu and Eboliang structural belts) during the Mesozoic and Cenozoic eras have been investigated. Several anticlines in the Lenghu and Eboliang structural belts are generally characterized by double fault systems at different structural levels. At shallower crustal levels, a thrust fault system dominates and at lower levels positive flower structures accommodate oblique shortening, and these are mainly separated by weak strata layers in the Upper Xiaganchaigou Formation, of late Eocene age. Left-step en echelon distributed normal faults and trailing extensional imbricate fan structures consistently demonstrate that the Lenghu and Eboliang structural belts are dominated by dextral transpressional deformation. The western part of the NE Qaidam Basin experienced an initial stage of extension in the Jurassic, which was associated with the formation of several NW-striking normal faults. We hypothesize that most of the deep compressional structures and shallow anticlines were formed due to the SW-directed thrusting of the Qilian Shan since the early Eocene, as a far-field effect of the Indo-Asian “hard” collision. The NNE-directed shortening was associated with dextral transpressional deformation within the western part of the NE Qaidam Basin that took place after the deposition of the Shangyoushashan Formation, of middle-late Miocene age. We interpret this phase of deformation to have been an integral part of the pulsed growth of the whole Tibetan Plateau.

Sedimentary deposits in midlatitude continental basins often preserve a paleoclimate record complementary to marine-based records. However, deriving that paleoclimate record depends on having well-exposed deposits and establishing a sufficiently robust geochronology. After decades of research, we have been able to correlate 77 tephra beds exposed in multiple stratigraphic sections in the Death Valley area, California, United States. These correlations identify 25 different tephra beds that erupted from at least five different volcanic centers from older than 3.58 Ma to ca. 32 ka. We have informally named and determined the ages for seven previously unrecognized beds: ca. 3.54 Ma tuff of Curry canyon, ca. 3.45 Ma tuff of Furnace Creek, ca. 3.1 Ma tuff of Kit Fox Hills, ca. 3.1 Ma tuff of Mesquite Flat, ca. 3.15 Ma tuff of Texas Spring, 3.117 ± 0.011 Ma tuff of Echo Canyon, and the ca. 1.3 Ma Amargosa ash bed. Several of these tephra beds are found as far northeast as central Utah and could be important marker beds in western North America. Our tephrochronologic data, combined with magnetic polarity data and ^(40)Ar/^(39)Ar age determinations, redefine Neogene sedimentary deposits exposed across 175 km^2 of the Death Valley area. The alluvial/lacustrine Furnace Creek Formation is a time-transgressive sedimentary sequence ranging from ca. 6.0 to 2.5 Ma in age. The ca. 2.5−1.7 Ma Funeral Formation is typically exposed as a proximal alluvial-fan facies overlying the Furnace Creek Formation. We have correlated deposits in the Kit Fox Hills, Salt Creek, Nova Basin, and southern Death Valley with the informally named ca. 1.3−0.5 Ma Mormon Point formation. In addition, our correlation of the late Pleistocene Wilson Creek ash bed 15 in the Lake Rogers deposits represents the first unambiguous sequences deposited during the Last Glacial Maximum (marine isotope stage [MIS] 2) in Death Valley. Based on this new stratigraphic framework, we show that the Pliocene and Pleistocene climate in Death Valley is consistent with the well-established marine tropical/subtropical record. Pluvial lakes in Death Valley and Searles Valley began to form ca. 3.5−3.4 Ma in the late Pliocene during MIS MG5. Initiation of lakes in these two hydrologically separated valleys at the same time at the beginning of a cooling trend in the marine climate record suggests a link to a cooler, wetter (glacial) regional climate in North America. The Death Valley lake persisted until ca. 3.30 Ma, at the peak of the M2 glaciation, after which there is no evidence of Pliocene lacustrine deposition, even at the peak of the Northern Hemisphere Glaciation (ca. 2.75 Ma). If pluvial lakes in the Pliocene are an indirect record of glacial climate conditions, as they are for the Pleistocene, then a glacial climate was present in western North America for ∼200,000 yr during the Pliocene, encompassing MIS MG5−M2. Pleistocene pluvial lakes in Death Valley that formed ca. 1.98−1.78 Ma, 1.3−1.0 Ma, and ca. 0.6 Ma (MIS 16) are consistent with other regional climate records that indicate a regional glacial climate; however, Death Valley was relatively dry at ca. 0.77 Ma (MIS 19), when large lakes existed in other basins. The limited extent of the MIS 2 marsh/shallow lake in the Lake Rogers basin of northern Death Valley reflects the well-known regional glacial climate at that time; however, Death Valley received relatively lower inflow and rainfall in comparison.

Stratigraphic sections in the Bogda Mountains, NW China, provide detailed records of late Permian–Early Triassic terrestrial paleoenvironmental and paleoclimatic evolution at the paleo-mid-latitude of NE Pangea. The sections are located in the Tarlong-Taodonggou, Dalongkou, and Zhaobishan areas, ~100 km apart, and ~5000 m in total thickness. An age model was constructed using seven high-resolution U-Pb zircon CA-TIMS dates in the Tarlong-Taodonggou sections and projected to sections in two other areas to convert the litho- and cyclo-stratigraphy into a chronostratigraphy. Sediments were deposited in braided and meandering streams, and lacustrine deltaic and lakeplain-littoral environments. A cyclostratigraphy was established on the basis of repetitive environmental changes for high-order cycles, stacking patterns of high-order cycles, and long-term climatic and tectonic trends for low-order cycles (LC). Sedimentary evidence from the upper Wuchiapingian–mid Induan Wutonggou LC indicates that the climate was generally humid-subhumid and gradually became variable toward a seasonally dry condition in the early Induan. Lush vegetation had persisted across the Permo–Triassic boundary into the early Induan. A subhumid-semiarid condition prevailed during the deposition of mid Induan–lower Olenekian Jiucaiyuan and lower Olenekian Shaofanggou LCs. These three LCs are largely continuous and separated by conformities and diastems. Intra- and inter-graben stratigraphic variability is reflected by variations in thickness, depositional system, and average sedimentation rate, and results in variable spatial and temporal stratigraphic resolution. Such stratigraphic variability is mainly controlled by paleogeographic location, depocenter shift, and episodic uplift and subsidence in the source areas and catchment basin. A changeover of plant communities occurred during the early Induan, postdating the end-Permian marine mass extinction. However, riparian vegetation and upland forests were still present from the mid Induan to early Olenekian, and served as primary food source for terrestrial ecosystems, including vertebrates. Correlation of the vascular plant evolutionary history from the latest Changhsingian to early Induan in the Bogda Mountains with those reported from Australia and south China indicates a diachronous floral changeover on Pangea. The late Permian–Early Triassic litho-, cyclo- and chrono-stratigraphies, constrained by the age model, provides a foundation for future studies on the evolution of continental sedimentary, climatic, biologic, and ecological systems in the Bogda region. It also provides a means to correlate terrestrial events in the mid-paleolatitudes with marine and nonmarine records in the other parts of the world.

Ultramafic pseudotachylytes have been regarded as earthquake fossils formed at mantle depths (i.e., >30 km). Here we show that pseudotachylytes hosted by ultramafic rocks from three localities have distinct magnetic properties. Fresh host-peridotites contain only small amounts of coarse-grained magnetite. In contrast, the ultramafic pseudotachylytes contain variable amounts of significantly finer magnetite that formed coseismically through melting. Among each locality, magnetite abundance in the pseudotachylytes ranges over several orders of magnitude (4~2000 ppm), and magnetic grain size varies considerably (from single domain to multidomain). Because the host-peridotites are compositionally similar, the pseudotachylyte magnetic properties are interpreted to primarily reflect the physical and cooling conditions prevailing during seismic slip. Further, the examination of laboratory-produced ultramafic pseudotachylytes shows that quenching does not produce superfine magnetite. We hypothesize that the magnetic properties of ultramafic pseudotachylytes are controlled by fO2 and in consequence vary systematically with depth of formation. Therefore these properties can be used to assess if the ruptures producing the earthquakes that these pseudotachylytes represent nucleated at actual mantle depths or at shallow depths during exhumation of mantle rocks.

Changes in the record of vertebrate-assemblage zones in the Karoo Basin, South Africa, serve as a model for the response of terrestrial ecosystems to the end-Permian biotic crisis. Vertebrate turnover from the Daptocephalus to Lystrosaurus Assemblage Zone is believed to have begun with the appearance of subtle siltstone-color variance and is coeval with a unique, laminated lithofacies, both of which are interpreted by other workers to represent evidence for an aridification trend. The laminated facies consists of interbedded greenish-gray and dark reddish-gray siltstone, with coloration of the latter reported as a function of an increasing eolian component. The current study combines stratigraphy, petrography, geochemistry, and rock magnetic properties of an interlaminated succession and lateral equivalents at Old Lootsberg Pass in the Eastern Cape Province to determine whether such subtle color variance is a function of aridification and, hence, climate change. Siltstones were evaluated from intervals both below and above a pedogenic nodule-bearing feldspathic wacke that is physically correlated over a > 0.5 km distance. The lower succession consists of interbedded greenish-gray ( sensu latu ) and reddish-gray ( sensu latu ) siltstone in which undisturbed and minimally disturbed primary sedimentary, along with few secondary biogenic structures, are interpreted to represent deposition in an abandoned channel-fill complex. Massive greenish-gray and dark reddish-gray siltstone above the channel complex demonstrate that coloration is variable across laterally equivalent strata. Both lithologies were assessed using X-ray fluorescence, X-ray diffraction, Mossbauer spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy with EDS, and bulk magnetic susceptibility, stepwise acquisition of an isothermal remanent magnetization (IRM), and backfield direct field demagnetization. Our data indicate that there is no statistically significant difference in major-element concentrations between lithologies and that subtle color difference is a function of the presence of fine ( Lystrosaurus Assemblage Zone was not arid. In contrast, the landscape was wet, that allowed for the continued growth of a Permian-age flora under conditions of high water table that experienced temporal fluxes in the hydrological regime promoting spatial color modification of sediment.

Vertebrate paleontologists have proposed a model for the terrestrial end-Permian event in the Karoo Basin, South Africa. The scenario envisions vegetational collapse that resulted in a phased extinction of vertebrate taxa in the uppermost Daptocephalus Assemblage Zone and overlying Lystrosaurus Assemblage Zone. These biodiversity patterns are placed into composite stratigraphic sections at key localities, several of which are in close spatial proximity. We present a stratigraphic framework at two of these localities, Old Lootsberg Pass and Tweefontein, physically correlated over ∼ 2 km distance into which new and previously reported fossils are placed. Glossopterid-dominated megafloras occur in both the Daptocephalus and Lystrosaurus biozones, along with palynological assemblages. The anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) is widely used to analyze magmatic flow in intrusive igneous bodies including plutons, sills and dikes. This method, owing its success to the rapid nature of measurements, provides a proxy for the orientation of markers with shape anisotropy that flow and align in a viscous medium. AMS specimens typically are 25 mm diameter right cylinders or 20 mm on-a-side cubes, representing a volume deemed statistically representative. Here, we present new AMS results, based on significantly smaller cubic specimens, which are 3.5 mm on a side, hence∼250 times volumetrically smaller than conventional specimens. We show that, in the case of frictional melts, which inherently have an extremely small grain size, this small volume is in most cases sufficient to characterize the pseudotachylyte fabric, particularly when magnetite is present. Further, we demonstrate that the mini-AMS method provides new opportunities to investigate the details of frictional melt flow in these coseismic miniature melt bodies. This new method offers significant potential to investigate frictional melt flow in pseudotachylyte veins including contributions to the lubrication of faults at shallow to moderate depths.

The end-Permian extinction records the greatest ecological catastrophe in Earth history. The vertebrate fossil record in the Karoo Basin, South Africa, has been used for more than a century as the standard for understanding turnover in terrestrial ecosystems, recently claimed to be in synchrony with the marine crisis. Workers assumed that systematic turnover at the Dicynodon assemblage zone boundary, followed by the appearance of new taxa directly above the base of the Lystrosaurus assemblage zone, is the continental expression of the end-Permian event and recovery. To test this hypothesis, we present the first highprecision age on strata close to the inferred Permian-Triassic boundary. A U-Pb isotope dilution–thermal ionization mass spectrometry zircon age of 253.48 ± 0.15 Ma (early Changhsingian) is from a silicified ash layer ~60 m below the current vertebrate-defined boundary at Old Lootsberg Pass (southern South Africa). This section yields newly discovered plants and vertebrates, and is dominated by a normal polarity signature. Our collective data suggest that the Dicynodon-Lystrosaurus assemblage zone boundary is stratigraphically higher than currently reported, and older than the marine extinction event. Therefore, the turnover in vertebrate taxa at this biozone boundary probably does not represent the biological expression of the terrestrial end-Permian mass extinction. The actual Permian-Triassic boundary in the Karoo Basin is either higher in the Katberg Formation or is not preserved. The currently accepted model of the terrestrial ecosystem response to the crisis, both in this basin and its extension globally, requires reevaluation.

Late Miocene plutons in coastal Chiapas, Mexico, represent the roots of an extinct magmatic arc. Miocene granitoids of calc-alkaline composition and arc chemistry intruded into and were deformed within the Tonala mylonite belt in the middle to upper crust. The mylonite belt is a crustal-scale shear zone extending along the western margin of the Chiapas Massif for ∼150 km. Deformation is characterized by a dominantly subhorizontal lineation and subvertical foliation along a strikingly linear zone that trends ∼310°. Mylonitic fabrics contain ambiguous but dominantly sinistral shear indicators. Intrusions are interpreted as syntectonic on the basis of similar U-Pb zircon crystallization age estimates (ca. 10 Ma) and the cooling age estimates obtained on neoformed micas in the mylonite. The plutons are elongated, their long axis is parallel to shear zone, and some plutons show markedly asymmetric outcrop patterns, with sheared tails that trail behind the intrusions and that are consistent with sinistral displacement. Parts of plutons were mylonitized by continuous deformation in the Tonala shear zone, locally developing intricate pseudotachylyte and cataclasite veins slightly oblique to the mylonite foliation. Outside of the shear zone, plutons preserve magmatic fabrics. These observations are consistent with features common to syntectonic granites interpreted to have been emplaced along strike-slip shear zones in a transpressional setting. We interpret the Tonala mylonites as representing a relict transform boundary that was slightly oblique to the Polochic-Motagua fault system, which accommodated over 100 km of sinistral displacement between the Chortis block (on the Caribbean plate) and Chiapas (on the North America plate) in late Miocene time.

This Special Publication provides a snapshot of our understanding of volcanic processes through the use of palaeomagnetic and rock magnetic techniques. Here, we provide a context for the book, placing individual chapters within the milieu of previous work, including some magnetic techniques that were not used in the particular studies described herein. Thermoremanent magnetization is a powerful tool to understand processes related to heating and cooling of rocks, including estimating the temperature of emplacement of pyroclastic deposits, which may allow us to better understand the rates of cooling during eruption and transport. Anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility and anisotropy of remanence are used primarily to investigate rock fabrics, and allow the interpretation of flow dynamics in dykes, lava flows and pyroclastic deposits, as well as the location of the eruptive vents. Rock magnetic characteristics can help in the correlation of volcanic deposits but also provide means to date volcanic deposits and to better understand the processes of cooling of the deposits, as the magnetic minerals can change with temperature. In addition, volcanic rocks may be key recorders of past magnetic fields, allowing a better understanding of changes in field intensity and, perhaps, providing clues of how the magnetic field is formed. Over the past several decades, palaeomagnetic and rock magnetic techniques have been applied to numerous problems in volcanology. Since Aramaki & Akimoto’s pioneering study in 1957, which used natural remanent magnetization (NRM) data to qualitatively estimate the temperature of emplacement of selected pyroclastic deposits in Japan (Aramaki & Akimoto 1957), many studies have utilized and refined the approach of using progressive thermal demagnetization data to estimate emplacement temperatures of pyroclastic deposits and have demonstrated the utility of this approach in many settings. Another extensively utilized technique is that of anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS), which was first applied to pyroclastic volcanic rocks by Ellwood (1982) on ignimbrites in the San Juan Mountains, SW Colorado, USA, to estimate flow fabrics and, in that study, to infer source locations through triangulation. It is staggering to think of the number and diversity of AMS studies on volcanic rocks that have been undertaken since that time, in a bit more than three decades! Remanent magnetization characteristics have long been used to correlate volcanic rocks and such data, together with rock magnetic properties, have been employed to study crystallization and cooling processes (e.g. Schlinger et al. 1988; Wells & Hillhouse 1989). As techniques have been refined, and the sensitivity, precision, reliability and/or speed of measurements for an array of modern instrumentation all have improved, workers have been able to study volcanic problems in more detail, pulling out details of the processes that have not previously been considered. In addition, the types of problems addressed have diversified considerably. We intend this Special Publication to provide a representative suite of contributions that help to summarize the current array of studies that apply palaeomagnetism and rock magnetism to volcanic processes, and to stimulate further research in this exciting science!
