1. Path Integral Control for Hybrid Dynamical Systems

Abstract: This work introduces a novel paradigm for solving optimal control problems for hybrid dynamical systems under uncertainties. Robotic systems having contact with the environment can be modeled as hybrid systems. Controller design for hybrid systems under disturbances is complicated by the discontinuous jump dynamics, mode changes with inconsistent state dimensions, and variations in jumping timing and states caused by noise. We formulate this problem into a stochastic control problem with hybrid transition constraints and propose the Hybrid Path Integral (H-PI) framework to obtain the optimal controller. Despite random mode changes across stochastic path samples, we show that the ratio between hybrid path distributions with varying drift terms remains analogous to the smooth path distributions. We then show that the optimal controller can be obtained by evaluating a path integral with hybrid constraints. Importance sampling for path distributions with hybrid dynamics constraints is introduced to reduce the variance of the path integral evaluation, where we leverage the recently developed Hybrid iterative-Linear-Quadratic-Regulator (H-iLQR) controller to induce a hybrid path distribution proposal with low variance. The proposed method is validated through numerical experiments on various hybrid systems and extensive ablation studies. 2. The VSPEC Collection: A suite of utilities to model spectroscopic phase curves of 3D exoplanet atmospheres in the presence of stellar variability

Abstract: We present the Variable Star PhasE Curve (VSPEC) Collection, a set of Python packages for simulating combined-light spectroscopic observations of 3-dimensional exoplanet atmospheres in the presence of stellar variability and inhomogeneity. VSPEC uses the Planetary Spectrum Generator's Global Emission Spectra (PSG/GlobES) application along with a custom-built multi-component time-variable stellar model based on a user-defined grid of stellar photosphere models to produce spectroscopic light curves of the planet-host system. VSPEC can be a useful tool for modeling observations of exoplanets in transiting geometries (primary transit, secondary eclipse) as well as orbital phase curve measurements, and is built in a modular and flexible configuration for easy adaptability to new stellar and planetary model inputs. 3. Hybrid Iterative Linear Quadratic Estimation: Optimal Estimation for Hybrid Systems

Abstract: In this paper we present Hybrid iterative Linear Quadratic Estimation (HiLQE), an optimization based offline state estimation algorithm for hybrid dynamical systems. We utilize the saltation matrix, a first order approximation of the variational update through an event driven hybrid transition, to calculate gradient information through hybrid events in the backward pass of an iterative linear quadratic optimization over state estimates. This enables accurate computation of the value function approximation at each timestep. Additionally, the forward pass in the iterative algorithm is augmented with hybrid dynamics in the rollout. A reference extension method is used to account for varying impact times when comparing states for the feedback gain in noise calculation. The proposed method is demonstrated on an ASLIP hopper system with position measurements. In comparison to the Salted Kalman Filter (SKF), the algorithm presented here achieves a maximum of 63.55% reduction in estimation error magnitude over all state dimensions near impact events.

4. Optimal Covariance Steering of Linear Stochastic Systems with Hybrid Transitions

Abstract: This work addresses the problem of optimally steering the state covariance of a linear stochastic system from an initial to a target, subject to hybrid transitions. The nonlinear and discontinuous jump dynamics complicate the control design for hybrid systems. Under uncertainties, stochastic jump timing and state variations further intensify this challenge. This work aims to regulate the hybrid system's state trajectory to stay close to a nominal deterministic one, despite uncertainties and noises. We address this problem by directly controlling state covariances around a mean trajectory, and this problem is termed the Hybrid Covariance Steering (H-CS) problem. The jump dynamics are approximated to the first order by leveraging the Saltation Matrix. When the jump dynamics are nonsingular, we derive an analytical closed-form solution to the H-CS problem. For general jump dynamics with possible singularity and changes in the state dimensions, we reformulate the problem into a convex optimization over path distributions by leveraging Schrodinger's Bridge duality to the smooth covariance control problem. The covariance propagation at hybrid events is enforced as equality constraints to handle singularity issues. The proposed convex framework scales linearly with the number of jump events, ensuring efficient, optimal solutions. 5. Black-box Uncertainty Quantification Method for LLM-as-a-Judge

Abstract: LLM-as-a-Judge is a widely used method for evaluating the performance of Large Language Models (LLMs) across various tasks. We address the challenge of quantifying the uncertainty of LLM-as-a-Judge evaluations. While uncertainty quantification has been well-studied in other domains, applying it effectively to LLMs poses unique challenges due to their complex decision-making capabilities and computational demands. In this paper, we introduce a novel method for quantifying uncertainty designed to enhance the trustworthiness of LLM-as-a-Judge evaluations. The method quantifies uncertainty by analyzing the relationships between generated assessments and possible ratings. By cross-evaluating these relationships and constructing a confusion matrix based on token probabilities, the method derives labels of high or low uncertainty. We evaluate our method across multiple benchmarks, demonstrating a strong correlation between the accuracy of LLM evaluations and the derived uncertainty scores. Our findings suggest that this method can significantly improve the reliability and consistency of LLM-as-a-Judge evaluations.

Abstract: Evaluation of large language model (LLM) outputs requires users to make critical judgments about the best outputs across various configurations. This process is costly and takes time given the large amounts of data. LLMs are increasingly used as evaluators to filter training data, evaluate model performance or assist human evaluators with detailed assessments. To support this process, effective front-end tools are critical for evaluation. Two common approaches for using LLMs as evaluators are direct assessment and pairwise comparison. In our study with machine learning practitioners (n=15), each completing 6 tasks yielding 131 evaluations, we explore how task-related factors and assessment strategies influence criteria refinement and user perceptions. Findings show that users performed more evaluations with direct assessment by making criteria task-specific, modifying judgments, and changing the evaluator model. We conclude with recommendations for how systems can better support interactions in LLM-assisted evaluations.

Abstract: We report the first measurement of the azimuthal anisotropy of J$/\psi$ at forward rapidity ($1.2<|\eta|<2.2$) in Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The data were collected by the PHENIX experiment in 2014 and 2016 with integrated luminosity of 14.5~nb$^{-1}$. The second Fourier coefficient ($v_2$) of the azimuthal distribution of $J/\psi$ is determined as a function of the transverse momentum ($p_T$) using the event-plane method. The measurements were performed for several selections of collision centrality: 0\%--50\%, 10\%--60\%, and 10\%-40\%. We find that in all cases the values of $v_2(p_T)$, which quantify the elliptic flow of J$/\psi$, are consistent with zero. The results are consistent with measurements at midrapidity, indicating no significant elliptic flow of the J$/\psi$ within the quark-gluon-plasma medium at collision energies of $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV., Comment: 369 authors from 72 institutions, 12 pages, 7 figures, 5 tables. v1 is version submitted to Physical Review C. Abstract: In this paper, we investigate the impact of hallucinations and cognitive forcing functions in human-AI collaborative text generation tasks, focusing on the use of Large Language Models (LLMs) to assist in generating high-quality conversational data. LLMs require data for fine-tuning, a crucial step in enhancing their performance. In the context of conversational customer support, the data takes the form of a conversation between a human customer and an agent and can be generated with an AI assistant. In our inquiry, involving 11 users who each completed 8 tasks, resulting in a total of 88 tasks, we found that the presence of hallucinations negatively impacts the quality of data. We also find that, although the cognitive forcing function does not always mitigate the detrimental effects of hallucinations on data quality, the presence of cognitive forcing functions and hallucinations together impacts data quality and influences how users leverage the AI responses presented to them. Our analysis of user behavior reveals distinct patterns of reliance on AI-generated responses, highlighting the importance of managing hallucinations in AI-generated content within conversational AI contexts.

Abstract: The $J/\psi$ and $\psi(2S)$ charmonium states, composed of $c\bar{c}$ quark pairs and known since the 1970s, are widely believed to serve as ideal probes to test quantum chromodynamics in high-energy hadronic interactions. However, there is not yet a complete understanding of the charmonium-production mechanism. Recent measurements of $J/\psi$ production as a function of event charged-particle multiplicity at the collision energies of both the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) show enhanced $J/\psi$ production yields with increasing multiplicity. One potential explanation for this type of dependence is multiparton interactions (MPI). We carry out the first measurements of self-normalized $J/\psi$ yields and the $\psi(2S)$ to $J/\psi$ ratio at both forward and backward rapidities as a function of self-normalized charged-particle multiplicity in $p$$+$$p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=200$ GeV. In addition, detailed {\sc pythia} studies tuned to RHIC energies were performed to investigate the MPI impacts. We find that the PHENIX data at RHIC are consistent with recent LHC measurements and can only be described by {\sc pythia} calculations that include MPI effects. The forward and backward $\psi(2S)$ to $J/\psi$ ratio, which serves as a unique and powerful approach to study final-state effects on charmonium production, is found to be less dependent on the charged-particle multiplicity., Comment: 301 authors from 69 institutions, 8 pages, 3 figures. v1 is version submitted to Physical Review D Letters. Abstract: The PHENIX experiment measured the centrality dependence of two-pion Bose-Einstein correlation functions in $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$~GeV Au$+$Au collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The data are well represented by L\'evy-stable source distributions. The extracted source parameters are the correlation-strength parameter $\lambda$, the L\'evy index of stability $\alpha$, and the L\'evy-scale parameter $R$ as a function of transverse mass $m_T$ and centrality. The $\lambda(m_T)$ parameter is constant at larger values of $m_T$, but decreases as $m_T$ decreases. The L\'evy scale parameter $R(m_T)$ decreases with $m_T$ and exhibits proportionality to the length scale of the nuclear overlap region. The L\'evy exponent $\alpha(m_T)$ is independent of $m_T$ within uncertainties in each investigated centrality bin, but shows a clear centrality dependence. At all centralities, the L\'evy exponent $\alpha$ is significantly different from that of Gaussian ($\alpha=2$) or Cauchy ($\alpha=1$) source distributions. Comparisons to the predictions of Monte-Carlo simulations of resonance-decay chains show that in all but the most peripheral centrality class (50%-60%), the obtained results are inconsistent with the measurements, unless a significant reduction of the in-medium mass of the $\eta'$ meson is included. In each centrality class, the best value of the in-medium $\eta'$ mass is compared to the mass of the $\eta$ meson, as well as to several theoretical predictions that consider restoration of $U_A(1)$ symmetry in hot hadronic matter., Comment: 401 authors from 75 institutions, 20 pages, 15 figures, 2 tables. v1 is version submitted to Physical Review C. Abstract: RadGrad is a curriculum initiative implemented via an application that combines features of social networks, degree planners, individual learning plans, and serious games. RadGrad redefines traditional meanings of "progress" and "success" in the undergraduate computer science degree program in an attempt to improve engagement, retention, and diversity. In this paper, we describe the RadGrad Project and report on an evaluation study designed to assess the impact of RadGrad on student engagement, diversity, and retention. We also present opportunities and challenges that result from the use of the system.

Abstract: High-momentum two-particle correlations are a useful tool for studying jet-quenching effects in the quark-gluon plasma. Angular correlations between neutral-pion triggers and charged hadrons with transverse momenta in the range 4--12~GeV/$c$ and 0.5--7~GeV/$c$, respectively, have been measured by the PHENIX experiment in 2014 for Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$~GeV. Suppression is observed in the yield of high-momentum jet fragments opposite the trigger particle, which indicates jet suppression stemming from in-medium partonic energy loss, while enhancement is observed for low-momentum particles. The ratio and differences between the yield in Au$+$Au collisions and $p$$+$$p$ collisions, $I_{AA}$ and $\Delta_{AA}$, as a function of the trigger-hadron azimuthal separation, $\Delta\phi$, are measured for the first time at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. Abstract: This data curation work introduces the first large-scale dataset of radial k-space and DICOM data for breast DCE-MRI acquired in diagnostic breast MRI exams. Our dataset includes case-level labels indicating patient age, menopause status, lesion status (negative, benign, and malignant), and lesion type for each case. The public availability of this dataset and accompanying reconstruction code will support research and development of fast and quantitative breast image reconstruction and machine learning methods.

17. A SIP AT A TIME: LABOR UNCERTAINTY WITHIN STARBUCKS

Abstract: Starbuck’s is the number one leading coffee company with over thirty-thousand locationsacross the world, while keeping a strong brand image. In 2021, Starbucks had the first store inBuffalo New York petition to unionize while over 300 stores slowly followed. Starbucks workersjoined Starbucks Workers United in hopes to improve working conditions and safety concerns.Now almost two years later, both Starbucks and their workers are in unknown territory that createschallenges amongst managers and their employees due to this stand still. I plan to uncover thechallenges and dynamics of managerial behaviors under the conditions of labor uncertainty alongthe lines of unionized versus non-unionized Starbucks locations. This capstone will uncover thedynamic of factors such as workforce demands, collective bargaining and shifts in the labormarket. I will go into detail around the unionization efforts, the process of negotiations betweenStarbucks and Workers United, and Starbucks adaptation to the evolving labor practices that havebeen put into place. I will also focus on Starbucks leadership approaches and how it relates to thechallenges between emotions with the partners and members of leadership who are not involvedwith the Union. Next, I will go into detail about the challenges managers and employees face withindividual reactions regarding strikes and walkouts, and what this means for Starbucks as a whole.This research will include how Starbucks can navigate this labor uncertainty while upholding theirthird-place standards and ethical employment practices.

Abstract: After decades of relative neglect, interest in Venus surges anew in the planetary science community and the public. New missions are planned and selected, and will pave the way to the decade of Venus, as new observations allow us to uncover some of the many mysteries our closest Solar System neighbor still harbors. Building on the legacy of past works, here, we discuss the state of our understanding of Venus, from both observation and modeling. We describe each of the envelopes of the planet, from its atmosphere to its interior with an eye for the most recent advances and current topics of interest. We then briefly discuss coupled modelling efforts to better constrain the evolution of the planet. Finally, we describe how the upcoming missions and concepts will further lift the veil on Venus' secrets.

24. Using Self-Efficacy Theory to Design Arduino Instruction for Novices: A Replication Study

Abstract: A replication study was conducted to determine the effectiveness of an instructional treatment based on self-efficacy theory when used with novice Arduino microcontroller users. Students (n = 32) in an introductory university agricultural systems technology course participated in a lesson on Arduino microcontrollers, circuit breadboarding, and Arduino programming which included four hands-on practice tasks, designed to provide students with positive mastery, vicarious and social persuasion experiences. Next, students completed a laboratory activity and were provided additional opportunities for mastery, vicarious, and social persuasion experiences. The one-group pretest-posttest design indicated the instructional treatment had significant (p < 0.001) and large effects in increasing students' interest in Arduino, breadboarding self-efficacy, programming self-efficacy, and Arduino knowledge. These findings were consistent with the original study and provided additional evidence for self-efficacy theory as an effective model for developing instruction for novice Arduino users. Students' written comments provided additional insight concerning the instructional treatment.

Abstract: Abstract: Organic carbon in seawater plays a significant role in the global carbon cycle. The concentration and composition of dissolved organic carbon reflect the activity of the biological community and chemical reactions that occur in seawater. From 2016 to 2019, we repeatedly sampled the oligotrophic northwest Sargasso Sea in the vicinity of the Bermuda Atlantic Time‐series Study site (BATS) to quantitatively follow known compounds within the pool of dissolved organic matter in the upper 1000 m of the water column. Most metabolites showed surface enrichment, and 83% of the metabolites had significantly lower concentrations with increasing depth. Dissolved metabolite concentrations most notably revealed temporal variability. Fourteen metabolites displayed seasonality that was repeated in each of the 4 yr sampled. Concentrations of vitamins, including pantothenic acid (vitamin B5) and riboflavin (vitamin B2), increased annually during winter periods when mixed layer depths were deepest. During diel sampling, light‐sensitive riboflavin decreased significantly during daylight hours. The temporal variability in metabolites at BATS was less than the spatial variability in metabolites from a previous sample set collected over a broad latitudinal range in the western Atlantic Ocean. The metabolites examined in this study are all components of central carbon metabolism. By examining these metabolites at finer resolution and in a time‐series, we begin to provide insights into the chemical compounds that may be exchanged by microorganisms in marine systems, data which are fundamental to understanding the chemical response of marine systems to future changes in climate.

Abstract: The PHENIX experiment has performed a systematic study of identified charged-hadron ($\pi^\pm$, $K^\pm$, $p$, $\bar{p}$) production at midrapidity in $p$$+$Al, $^3$He$+$Au, Cu$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV and U$+$U collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=193$ GeV. Identified charged-hadron invariant transverse-momentum ($p_T$) and transverse-mass ($m_T$) spectra are presented and interpreted in terms of radially expanding thermalized systems. The particle ratios of $K/\pi$ and $p/\pi$ have been measured in different centrality ranges of large (Cu$+$Au, U$+$U) and small ($p$$+$Al, $^3$He$+$Au) collision systems. The values of $K/\pi$ ratios measured in all considered collision systems were found to be consistent with those measured in $p$$+$$p$ collisions. However the values of $p/\pi$ ratios measured in large collision systems reach the values of $\approx0.6$, which is $\approx2$ times larger than in $p$$+$$p$ collisions. These results can be qualitatively understood in terms of the baryon enhancement expected from hadronization by recombination. Identified charged-hadron nuclear-modification factors ($R_{AB}$) are also presented. Enhancement of proton $R_{AB}$ values over meson $R_{AB}$ values was observed in central $^3$He$+$Au, Cu$+$Au, and U$+$U collisions. The proton $R_{AB}$ values measured in $p$$+$Al collision system were found to be consistent with $R_{AB}$ values of $\phi$, $\pi^\pm$, $K^\pm$, and $\pi^0$ mesons, which may indicate that the size of the system produced in $p$$+$Al collisions is too small for recombination to cause a noticeable increase in proton production., Comment: 480 authors from 78 institutions, 18 pages, 6 tables, 16 figures. v2 is version accepted for publication in Physical Review C. 36. Pay Attention to How You Drive: Safe and Adaptive Model-Based Reinforcement Learning for Off-Road Driving

Abstract: Autonomous off-road driving is challenging as risky actions taken by the robot may lead to catastrophic damage. As such, developing controllers in simulation is often desirable as it provides a safer and more economical alternative. However, accurately modeling robot dynamics is difficult due to the complex robot dynamics and terrain interactions in unstructured environments. Domain randomization addresses this problem by randomizing simulation dynamics parameters, however this approach sacrifices performance for robustness leading to policies that are sub-optimal for any target dynamics. We introduce a novel model-based reinforcement learning approach that aims to balance robustness with adaptability. Our approach trains a System Identification Transformer (SIT) and an Adaptive Dynamics Model (ADM) under a variety of simulated dynamics. The SIT uses attention mechanisms to distill state-transition observations from the target system into a context vector, which provides an abstraction for its target dynamics. Conditioned on this, the ADM probabilistically models the system's dynamics. Online, we use a Risk-Aware Model Predictive Path Integral controller (MPPI) to safely control the robot under its current understanding of the dynamics. We demonstrate in simulation as well as in multiple real-world environments that this approach enables safer behaviors upon initialization and becomes less conservative (i.e. faster) as its understanding of the target system dynamics improves with more observations. In particular, our approach results in an approximately 41% improvement in lap-time over the non-adaptive baseline while remaining safe across different environments.

39. Discernment of Children's True and False Memory Reports: Police Officers and Laypersons.

Abstract: Adults' ability to accurately evaluate children's statements can have far-reaching consequences within the legal system. This study examined the evaluations of police officers ("experts") and laypersons ("nonexperts") when presented with videotaped interviews of children aged 3 and 5 years who provided either true or false reports or denials. Participants were drawn from several counties in the eastern United States. Children's interview statements fell within four statement types: accurate reports, false reports, accurate denials, and false denials. Both groups of participants displayed overbelief in false denials. Several control variables predicted accuracy, including children's age and children's race. A significant interaction emerged: Experts (vs. nonexperts) had greater odds of being accurate when judging false reports (vs. false denials). These findings highlight the challenges adults face when distinguishing between various types of children's statements. The results have important implications for legal contexts, emphasizing that fact finders need to be mindful of the risks associated with both overaccepting false denials and accepting false reports.

40. The Simplest Walking Robot: A bipedal robot with one actuator and two rigid bodies

Abstract: We present the design and experimental results of the first 1-DOF, hip-actuated bipedal robot. While passive dynamic walking is simple by nature, many existing bipeds inspired by this form of walking are complex in control, mechanical design, or both. Our design using only two rigid bodies connected by a single motor aims to enable exploration of walking at smaller sizes where more complex designs cannot be constructed. The walker, "Mugatu", is self-contained and autonomous, open-loop stable over a range of input parameters, able to stop and start from standing, and able to control its heading left and right. We analyze the mechanical design and distill down a set of design rules that enable these behaviors. 41. Collision Detection for Multi-Robot Motion Planning with Efficient Quad-Tree Update and Skipping

Abstract: This paper presents a novel and efficient collision checking approach called Updating and Collision Check Skipping Quad-tree (USQ) for multi-robot motion planning. USQ extends the standard quad-tree data structure through a time-efficient update mechanism, which significantly reduces the total number of collision checks and the collision checking time. In addition, it handles transitions at the quad-tree quadrant boundaries based on worst-case trajectories of agents. These extensions make quad-trees suitable for efficient collision checking in multi-robot motion planning of large robot teams. We evaluate the efficiency of USQ in comparison with Regenerating Quad-tree (RQ) from scratch at each timestep and naive pairwise collision checking across a variety of randomized environments. The results indicate that USQ significantly reduces the number of collision checks and the collision checking time compared to other baselines for different numbers of robots and map sizes. 42. Saltation Matrices: The Essential Tool for Linearizing Hybrid Dynamical Systems

Abstract: Hybrid dynamical systems, i.e. systems that have both continuous and discrete states, are ubiquitous in engineering, but are difficult to work with due to their discontinuous transitions. For example, a robot leg is able to exert very little control effort while it is in the air compared to when it is on the ground. When the leg hits the ground, the penetrating velocity instantaneously collapses to zero. These instantaneous changes in dynamics and discontinuities (or jumps) in state make standard smooth tools for planning, estimation, control, and learning difficult for hybrid systems. One of the key tools for accounting for these jumps is called the saltation matrix. The saltation matrix is the sensitivity update when a hybrid jump occurs and has been used in a variety of fields including robotics, power circuits, and computational neuroscience. This paper presents an intuitive derivation of the saltation matrix and discusses what it captures, where it has been used in the past, how it is used for linear and quadratic forms, how it is computed for rigid body systems with unilateral constraints, and some of the structural properties of the saltation matrix in these cases.

43. Parent Expectations, Deaf Youth Expectations, and Transition Goals as Predictors of Postsecondary Education Enrollment

Abstract: This study used the National Longitudinal Transition Study--2 (NLTS2) data set to determine the effects of expectations and transition planning goals on the postsecondary education enrollment of deaf youth. Propensity scoring modeling results indicated that high expectations held by deaf youth and their parents significantly predicted postsecondary education attendance at 2- and 4-year colleges, and career and technical education (CTE) schools. College enrollment as a transition planning goal for deaf youth also significantly predicted enrollment in all three types of postsecondary education institutions. Postsecondary CTE school attendance as a transition plan goal for deaf youth did not make a difference in enrollment outcomes for CTE and 2-year college, and it significantly reduced their odds of attending 4-year college. Implications regarding expectations and transition plan goals are discussed.
