Abstract

Field robotics applications, such as search and rescue, involve robots operating in large, unknown areas. These environments present unique challenges that compound the difficulties faced by a robot operator. The use of multi-robot teams, assisted by carefully designed autonomy, help reduce operator workload and allow the operator to effectively coordinate robot capabilities. In this work, we present a system architecture designed to optimize both robot autonomy and the operator experience in multi-robot scenarios. Drawing on lessons learned from our team's participation in the DARPA SubT Challenge, our architecture emphasizes modularity and interoperability. We empower the operator by allowing for adjustable levels of autonomy ("sliding mode autonomy"). We enhance the operator experience by using intuitive, adaptive interfaces that suggest context-aware actions to simplify control. Finally, we describe how the proposed architecture enables streamlined development of new capabilities for effective deployment of robot autonomy in the field., Comment: Accepted to the IEEE ICRA Workshop on Field Robotics 2024

Abstract

Next generation high contrast imaging instruments face a challenging trade off: they will be required to deliver data with high spectral resolution at a relatively fast cadence (minutes) and across a wide field of view (arcseconds). For instruments that employ focal plane wavefront sensing and therefore require super-Nyquist sampling, these requirements cannot simultaneously be met with a traditional lenslet integral field spectrograph (IFU). For the SPIDERS pathfinder instrument, we are demonstrating an imaging Fourier transform spectrograph (IFTS) that offers a different set of tradeoffs than a lenslet IFU, delivering up to R20,000 spectral resolution across a dark hole. We present preliminary results from the SPIDERS IFTS including a chromaticity analysis of its dark hole and demonstrate a spectral differential imaging (SDI) improvement of up to 40 $\times$, and a first application of spectro-coherent differential imaging, combining both coherent differential imaging (CDI) and SDI., Comment: Submitted to the proceedings of adaptive optics for extremely large telescopes 7

Abstract

ObjectiveTo document the recovery of vascular services in Europe following the first COVID-19 pandemic peak.MethodsAn online structured vascular service survey with repeated data entry between 23 March and 9 August 2020 was carried out. Unit level data were collected using repeated questionnaires addressing modifications to vascular services during the first peak (March - May 2020, "period 1"), and then again between May and June ("period 2") and June and July 2020 ("period 3"). The duration of each period was similar. From 2 June, as reductions in cases began to be reported, centres were first asked if they were in a region still affected by rising cases, or if they had passed the peak of the first wave. These centres were asked additional questions about adaptations made to their standard pathways to permit elective surgery to resume.ResultsThe impact of the pandemic continued to be felt well after countries' first peak was thought to have passed in 2020. Aneurysm screening had not returned to normal in 21.7% of centres. Carotid surgery was still offered on a case by case basis in 33.8% of centres, and only 52.9% of centres had returned to their normal aneurysm threshold for surgery. Half of centres (49.4%) believed their management of lower limb ischaemia continued to be negatively affected by the pandemic. Reduced operating theatre capacity continued in 45.5% of centres. Twenty per cent of responding centres documented a backlog of at least 20 aortic repairs. At least one negative swab and 14 days of isolation were the most common strategies used for permitting safe elective surgery to recommence.ConclusionCentres reported a broad return of services approaching pre-pandemic "normal" by July 2020. Many introduced protocols to manage peri-operative COVID-19 risk. Backlogs in cases were reported for all major vascular surgeries.

Abstract

ObjectiveDuring the COVID-19 pandemic, central venous access line teams were implemented at many hospitals throughout the world to provide access for critically ill patients. The objective of this study was to describe the structure, practice patterns, and outcomes of these vascular access teams during the COVID-19 pandemic.MethodsWe conducted a cross-sectional, self-reported study of central venous access line teams in hospitals afflicted with the COVID-19 pandemic. To participate in the study, hospitals were required to meet one of the following criteria: development of a formal plan for a central venous access line team during the pandemic; implementation of a central venous access line team during the pandemic; placement of central venous access by a designated practice group during the pandemic as part of routine clinical practice; or management of an iatrogenic complication related to central venous access in a patient with COVID-19.ResultsParticipants from 60 hospitals in 13 countries contributed data to the study. Central venous line teams were most commonly composed of vascular surgery and general surgery attending physicians and trainees. Twenty sites had 2657 lines placed by their central venous access line team or designated practice group. During that time, there were 11 (0.4%) iatrogenic complications associated with central venous access procedures performed by the line team or group at those 20 sites. Triple lumen catheters, Cordis (Santa Clara, Calif) catheters, and nontunneled hemodialysis catheters were the most common types of central venous lines placed by the teams. Eight (14%) sites reported experience in placing central venous lines in prone, ventilated patients with COVID-19. A dedicated line cart was used by 35 (59%) of the hospitals. Less than 50% (24 [41%]) of the participating sites reported managing thrombosed central lines in COVID-19 patients. Twenty-three of the sites managed 48 iatrogenic complications in patients with COVID-19 (including complications caused by providers outside of the line team or designated practice group).ConclusionsImplementation of a dedicated central venous access line team during a pandemic or other health care crisis is a way by which physicians trained in central venous access can contribute their expertise to a stressed health care system. A line team composed of physicians with vascular skill sets provides relief to resource-constrained intensive care unit, ward, and emergency medicine teams with a low rate of iatrogenic complications relative to historical reports. We recommend that a plan for central venous access line team implementation be in place for future health care crises.

26. Automated Writing Instruction and Feedback: Instructional Mode, Attitudes, and Revising

Abstract

This study evaluates high school students' perceptions of automated writing feedback, and the influence of these perceptions on revising, as a function of varying modes of computer-based writing instruction. Findings indicate that students' perceptions of automated feedback accuracy, ease of use, relevance, and understandability were favorable. Immediate perceptions of feedback received on a selected essay were minimally related to how and whether students revised their essays. However, attitudes formed over multiple sessions were significantly related to revising. More importantly, the mode of instruction appeared to influence how feedback perceptions shaped revising behaviors. Students who engaged in traditional writing-based training and practice seemed to focus on their own perceived writing abilities when deciding how to revise. In contrast, students who also received strategy instruction and game-based practice attended more carefully to the perceived quality of the automated feedback. Abstract

Automated writing evaluation (AWE) is a popular form of educational technology designed to supplement writing instruction and feedback, yet research on the effectiveness of AWE has observed mixed findings. The current study considered how students' perceptions of automated essay scoring and feedback influenced their writing performance, revising behaviors, and future intentions toward the technology. The manner in which the software was presented--claims about the accuracy and quality of the automated scoring and feedback--were modestly related to students' expectations and perceptions. However, students' direct experiences with the software were most strongly associated with their perceptions. Importantly, students' perceptions seemed to have minimal impact on their "in the moment" use of the software to write and revise successfully. Students revised and improved their essays regardless of their positive or negative views of the system. However, positive and negative perceptions significantly predicted future intentions to use the software again or to recommend the software to a friend. Implications for AWE design, implementation, and evaluation are discussed.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic put an abrupt end to face-to-face teaching at many colleges and universities. While numerous methods for synchronous and asynchronous teaching in lecture courses were quickly deployed, laboratory instruction presented a unique set of challenges. To develop online laboratories quickly would be a daunting task for an individual. However, contributions of many individuals could ease and hasten the transition to using virtual laboratories. The IONiC-VIPEr community of practice is one such community that sprung to action to provide virtual alternatives for inorganic chemistry laboratory instruction.

Abstract

Locoregional delivery of chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cells has resulted in objective responses in adults with glioblastoma, but the feasibility and tolerability of this approach is yet to be evaluated for pediatric central nervous system (CNS) tumors. Here we show that engineering of a medium-length CAR spacer enhances the therapeutic efficacy of human erb-b2 receptor tyrosine kinase 2 (HER2)-specific CAR T cells in an orthotopic xenograft medulloblastoma model. We translated these findings into BrainChild-01 (NCT03500991), an ongoing phase 1 clinical trial at Seattle Children's evaluating repetitive locoregional dosing of these HER2-specific CAR T cells to children and young adults with recurrent/refractory CNS tumors, including diffuse midline glioma. Primary objectives are assessing feasibility, safety and tolerability; secondary objectives include assessing CAR T cell distribution and disease response. In the outpatient setting, patients receive infusions via CNS catheter into either the tumor cavity or the ventricular system. The initial three patients experienced no dose-limiting toxicity and exhibited clinical, as well as correlative laboratory, evidence of local CNS immune activation, including high concentrations of CXCL10 and CCL2 in the cerebrospinal fluid. This interim report supports the feasibility of generating HER2-specific CAR T cells for repeated dosing regimens and suggests that their repeated intra-CNS delivery might be well tolerated and activate a localized immune response in pediatric and young adult patients. 49. How Do I Design a Chemical Reaction to Do Useful Work? Reinvigorating General Chemistry by Connecting Chemistry and Society

Abstract

Insights and methods from the chemical sciences are directly relevant to global challenges such as climate change, renewable energy generation and storage, water purification, and food production. However, these connections are often opaque to students in general chemistry courses, who may get lost in the weeds of stoichiometry, VSEPR, and gas laws, and fail to see the relevance of their studies to their lives and their communities. Herein we describe a redesigned first-year undergraduate chemistry course that grounds chemical content in relevant societal applications. Students engage in collaborative, inquiry-based learning through an adapted POGIL methodology, and the highly structured class activities help students learn soft skills that enable success in higher education. Significant course revisions sometimes face resistance from key stakeholders, including students, faculty, and administration. We offer a case study in framing broader disciplinary concerns through the lens of institutional values to increase buy-in among key stakeholders.
