Abstract

The Border Collie (BC) is one of the breeds most commonly and severely affected by idiopathic epilepsy (IE), though little is known regarding the genetic factors that may increase this breed’s susceptibility. We conducted a genome-wide association study (GWAS) meta-analysis including up to 123 cases and 187 controls utilising three array-genotyped study sets and used genotype imputation to increase the resolution to whole genome level. Cases were BC diagnosed with IE with at least a tier I level of confidence; controls were BC over the age of 8 years reported by owners to have never had a seizure. We tested 28 SNPs in an independent BC replication set (up to 288 cases and 372 controls), identifying three SNPs (two on chromosome 11, one on chromosome 16) showing evidence of a reproducible association with IE. Whole genome sequence (WGS) analysis of 12 cases and five controls, and follow-up genotyping in the replication set, enabled fine-mapping of the three IE-associated regions. Separately, we searched for rare, common, and fixed risk variants directly through WGS analysis of 12 cases compared against 59 dogs of 35 different breeds not known to have a high prevalence of epilepsy. Following filtering for candidacy and subsequent follow-up in our extended case-control set, we identified common variants, and rare case-specific variants. These findings provide evidence that IE in the BC is a heterogeneous disease with higher and low impact DNA variants contributing to risk and will help improve our understanding of the aetiology of IE.

41. Comprehensive School Reform: Perspectives from Model Developers.

Abstract

With the help of programs such as the Comprehensive School Reform Demonstration (CSDR) program--which provides funding to schools to help them improve student performance--the number of models for school reform has increased in recent years. These models of reform represent a wide range of ideas about the best ways to effect change in low-performing schools. In May 2000, model developers from CSDR schools, along with other educators, met in a 2-day conference to discuss the challenges in adopting comprehensive reform models and in making them work. This article presents the developments from that conference and serves as a guide for those looking to implement change in their schools. Specifically, it discusses six common issues that emerged from the conference as keys to successful and meaningful educational improvement. The six issues are as follows: (1) the crucial resource of time; (2) state and district policies that support change; (3) getting off to the right start; (4) strong, consistent district and school leadership; (4) ongoing professional learning; (5) evaluations aligned with goals and sensibly timed; and (6) sustained vision and momentum over the long haul. 42. Foreign Language Training in U.S. Undergraduate IB Programs: Are We Providing Students What They Need to Be Successful?

Abstract

A growing number of U.S. business schools now offer an undergraduate degree in international business (IB), for which training in a foreign language is a requirement. However, there appears to be considerable variance in the minimum requirements for foreign language training across U.S. business schools, including the provision of "business" language courses, and in what is viewed as "competence" or "fluency" in a foreign language. Similarly, business schools differ in their procedures for how the foreign language requirement is applied to foreign native speakers and/or to speakers of heritage languages. This study reports the results of an online survey that was sent to 226 schools offering a major or concentration in IB. The findings from 79 reporting schools indicate that the level of proficiency expected of foreign language learners in the IB program continues to vary widely, that few schools require a course in the business aspects of the foreign language, and that there is inconsistency in what is meant by foreign language "competence" and "fluency," as well as in the treatment of foreign native speakers and heritage speakers of foreign languages. The results question whether students who satisfy the minimum foreign language requirements in undergraduate IB programs are adequately prepared for the professional IB world.
