Summary.-Stress in the school environment of 269 elementary school children attending Grades 4, 5, and 6 of a metropolitan school district were assessed using the School Stress Questionnaire. The effects of sex, ethnic background minority vs non-minority), type of classroom placement (regular education versus special education), and family structure (traditional versus nontraditional or divorced) were investigated. Children from nontraditional or divorced families had significantly higher school stress than children from intact families. The possibility that these results are a reflection of society's negative attitudes toward children living in nontraditional families is raised.

Midlife developmental concerns of returning women students included a focus on the future, the experience of a culminating event, and a mentor relationship. Needs assessment and other programs should reflect these concerns. (Author/JAC)

Introduction: Few studies have directly investigated impulsivity in Huntington’s disease (HD) despite known changes in dopaminergic and frontal functioning, changes that have been associated with impulsivity in other disorders and in the normal population. This study sought to further categorize impulsivity in HD through examining differences in self-reported impulsivity between community controls and HD patients, the relationship between executive dysfunction and impulsivity, and the relationship of a reward/punishment behavioral inhibition task in relation to these self-report measures. It was expected that HD patients would report higher impulsivity and executive dysfunction and that these measures would relate to a reward/punishment behavioral inhibition task.Method: The Barratt Impulsivity Scale (BIS–11) and Behavioral Inhibition/Behavioral Activation Scale (BIS/BAS) were completed, and the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and a reward-based flanker task with punishing and rewarding conditions were administered to 22 HD patients and 14 control participants.Results: HD patients reported higher trait impulsivity (BIS–11) and executive dysfunction (Frontal Systems Behavior Scale, FrSBE) but not increased impulsivity on the BIS/BAS relative to controls. Higher BIS–11 scores were related to increased self-reported executive dysfunction and the attention/working memory factor of the MMSE. On a reward/punishment behavioral inhibition task, BAS was uniquely related to increased accuracy on rewarding trials of the flanker task, but was not related to punishing trials in HD patients.Conclusions: The relationships found suggest that trait impulsivity is reported higher in HD and may not be driven by altered reward evaluation and the appetitive nature of stimuli but rather by increased executive dysfunction and lack of sensitivity to punishment. Impulsivity in HD may represent a combination of trait impulsivity, altered dopaminergic circuitry, and executive dysfunction. Understanding impulsivity in HD is important as it is related to increased risk to the patient and difficult behaviors for the caregiver, and sheds light on the disease process. The effects of infant suckling patterns on the post-partum resumption of ovulation and on birth-spacing are investigated among the Gainj of highland New Guinea. Based on hormonal evidence, the median duration of lactational anovulation is 20·4 months, accounting for about 75% of the median interval between live birth and next successful conception (i.e. resulting in live birth). Throughout lactation, suckling episodes are short and frequent, the interval changing slowly over time, from 24 minutes in newborns to 80 minutes in 3-year olds. Maternal serum prolactin concentrations decline in parallel with the changes in suckling patterns, approaching the level observed in non-nursing women by about 24 months post-partum. A path analysis indicates that the interval between suckling episodes is the principal determinant of maternal prolactin concentration, with time since parturition affecting prolactin secretion only in so far as it affects suckling frequency. The extremely prolonged contraceptive effect of breast-feeding in this population thus appears to be due to (i) a slow decline in suckling frequency with time since parturition and (ii) absence of a decline over time in hypothalamic–pituitary responsiveness to the suckling stimulus. Capillary blood glucose monitoring devices (CBGMs) that incorporate "wipeless" technology recently have been designed and marketed for hospital use. Our objective was to evaluate three such devices for accuracy and precision, comparing them to a popular device that utilizes older technology and to a reference standard. Blood glucose level was simultaneously determined on the CBGMs and a reference standard. Results were analyzed for precision by performing repeated measurements of a single sample and for accuracy across the entire range of determinations. Clinically relevant subsets of the entire range also were detemnined and arbitrarily defined as low (<60 mg/dL), normal (60 to 140 mg/dL), high (141 to 300 mg/dL), and very high (>300 mg/dL). We found that accuracy and precision of these devices varied considerably. Lack of accuracy was particularly evident upon analysis of the clinically relevant subset ranges of blood glucose levels. Consequently, routine evaluation of CBGMs should include analysis of clinically relevant subset ranges of blood glucose levels.
