This article examines the evaluations of nine pre-service school counselors who completed a practicum in an inner-city or urban, predominately African American school. A content analysis of the pre-service counselors' narrative evaluations was studied and six themes emerged: (a) Relationships and Interactions with Urban Students and Educators, (b) Cultural Differences, (c) Urban Schools and Environment, (d) Urban School Counseling Skills, (e) Urban School Counselor's Role, and (f) Urban Student Issues/Problems. Implications for urban school counselor educators and future research are given.

Introduction: Dex® is an alkaline carbohydrate (CHO) drink used preoperatively in patients fasting for elective surgery. Its utilisation in patients awaiting emergency surgery is yet to be ascertained. We undertook a study assessing patient satisfaction relating to the introduction of Dex® in trauma patients in a Level 1 adult trauma centre. Methods: Patients fasting for surgery, and able to receive clear fluids in compliance with local guidelines, were eligible for inclusion. Patient satisfaction scores for predetermined variables were recorded via an interval observer scale prior to and following the introduction of Dex® to the trauma unit. Results: Prior to the introduction of Dex® 14 satisfaction evaluations were completed. A further 13 evaluations were returned after Dex® was made available. Post-traumatic amnesia accounted for some patients being unable to complete the evaluation. Patients who completed the satisfaction evaluations after Dex® was introduced reported higher satisfaction in all but two variables ('Headache' and 'Staff Annoyance'). 'Hunger' median scores were 7 (95% CI, 5–8) prior to the introduction of Dex® and 3 (95% CI, 2–6) after its' introduction (p =.004). 'Thirst' median scores were 7.5 (95% CI, 6–10) and 4 (95% CI, 3–8) prior to and after Dex® introduction, respectively (p =.018). Conclusion: No adverse events or theatre timing related issues were associated with the use of Dex®. A larger randomised study of CHO drink supplementation in trauma patients fasting preoperatively is warranted to further evaluate these satisfaction endpoints as well as the other variables investigated in this study. It suggests that ultrasonography of the sacroiliac and lumbosacral regions, along with corticosteroid injections, are the most effective ways to address pain and inflammation.

This article examined school counselor dispositions (e.g., general self-efficacy, counselor self-efficacy, openness to change, commitment to counseling improvement/professional development) that predict data usage among K-12 professional school counselors. For the study, 130 professional school counselors from Maryland and Virginia completed the School Counselor Attribute and Data Usage Survey. Results indicated that school counselor self-efficacy and general self-efficacy best predict school counselor data usage. (Contains 4 tables.)

Intra‐articular (IA) hyaluronic acid (HA) is commonly used to treat equine arthritis. Inflammatory response or "joint flare" is a recognized potential side effect. However, the incidence and severity of inflammation following IA HA injection in horses is not well documented. This study compared the effects of two IA HA formulations of different molecular weight (MW) and a saline control on clinical signs and synovial fluid markers of inflammation in normal equine joints. Eight adult horses each had three healthy fetlock joints randomly assigned to treatment with either 1.4 mega Dalton HA, 0.8 mega Dalton HA or saline control once weekly for three weeks. Clinical evaluation and synovial fluid analysis were performed by blinded assessors. Outcomes of interest were lameness score, joint effusion score and synovial fluid white cell count and differential, total protein, viscosity and serum amyloid A. Joints injected with HA developed significant mild‐to‐moderate inflammatory responses often associated with lameness and joint effusion compared with saline control joints. The higher MW HA formulation elicited a significantly greater inflammatory response than the lower MW HA after the first injection. In HA injected joints, viscosity remained poor for the entire study. Both IA HA formulations in this study induced an inflammatory response in healthy equine joints. This may have implications for the use of HA in equine joints. The findings in this study are limited to the two HA formulations used. Further investigation of different HA formulations and the use of HA in normal and arthritic equine joints is warranted. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
