We construct an interpolatory high-order cubature rule to compute integrals of smooth functions over self-affine sets with respect to an invariant measure. The main difficulty is the computation of the cubature weights, which we characterize algebraically, by exploiting a self-similarity property of the integral. We propose an $h$-version and a $p$-version of the cubature, present an error analysis and conduct numerical experiments.

We are interested in the Helmholtz equation in a junction of two periodic half-spaces. When the overall medium is periodic in the direction of the interface, Fliss and Joly (2019) proposed a method which consists in applying a partial Floquet-Bloch transform along the interface, to obtain a family of waveguide problems parameterized by the Floquet variable. In this paper, we consider two model configurations where the medium is no longer periodic in the direction of the interface. Inspired by the works of G\'erard-Varet and Masmoudi (2011, 2012), and Blanc, Le Bris, and Lions (2015), we use the fact that the overall medium has a so-called quasiperiodic structure, in the sense that it is the restriction of a higher dimensional periodic medium. Accordingly, the Helmholtz equation is lifted onto a higher dimensional problem with coefficients that are periodic along the interface. This periodicity property allows us to adapt the tools previously developed for periodic media. However, the augmented PDE is elliptically degenerate (in the sense of the principal part of its differential operator) and thus more delicate to analyse., Comment: 60 pages, 29 figures

This work concerns the analysis of electromagnetic dispersive media modelled by generalized Lorentz models. More precisely, this paper is the second of two articles dedicated to the long time behaviour of solutions of Maxwell's equations in dissipative Lorentz media, via the long time decay rate of the electromagnetic energy for the corresponding Cauchy problem. In opposition to the frequency dependent Lyapunov functions approach used in [Cassier, Joly, Rosas Mart\'inez, Z. Angew. Math. Phys. 74 (2023), 115], we develop a method based on the spectral analysis of the underlying non-self-adjoint operator of the model. Although more involved, this approach is closer to physics, as it uses the dispersion relation of the model, and has the advantage to provide more precise and more optimal results, leading to distinguish the notion of weak and strong dissipation., Comment: 68 pages, 4 figures

This work is devoted to the resolution of the Helmholtz equation $-(\mu u')' - \rho \omega^2 u = f$ in a one-dimensional unbounded medium. We assume the coefficients of this equation to be local perturbations of quasiperiodic functions, namely the traces along a particular line of higher-dimensional periodic functions. Using the definition of quasiperiodicity, the problem is lifted onto a higher-dimensional problem with periodic coefficients. The periodicity of the augmented problem allows us to extend the ideas of the DtN-based method developed for the elliptic case. However, the associated mathematical and numerical analysis of the method are more delicate because the augmented PDE is degenerate, in the sense that the principal part of its operator is no longer elliptic. We also study the numerical resolution of this PDE, which relies on the resolution of Dirichlet cell problems as well as a constrained Riccati equation., Comment: 45 pages, 15 figures

It is well-known that electromagnetic dispersive structures such as metamaterials can be modelled by generalized Drude-Lorentz models. The present paper is the first of two articles dedicated to dissipative generalized Drude-Lorentz open structures. We wish to quantify the loss in such media in terms of the long time decay rate of the electromagnetic energy for the corresponding Cauchy problem. By using an approach based on frequency dependent Lyapounov estimates, we show that this decay is polynomial in time. These results extend to an unbounded structure the ones obtained for bounded media in [18] via a quite different method based on the notion of cumulated past history and semi-group theory. This paper is concerned with the time-dependent Maxwell's equations for a plane interface between a negative material described by the Drude model and the vacuum, which fill, respectively, two complementary half-spaces. In a first paper, we have constructed a generalized Fourier transform which diagonalizes the Hamiltonian that represents the propagation of transverse electric waves. In this second paper, we use this transform to prove the limiting absorption and limiting amplitude principles, which concern, respectively, the behavior of the resolvent near the continuous spectrum and the long time response of the medium to a time-harmonic source of prescribed frequency. This paper also underlines the existence of an interface resonance which occurs when there exists a particular frequency characterized by a ratio of permittivities and permeabilities equal to $-1$ across the interface. At this frequency, the response of the system to a harmonic forcing term blows up linearly in time. Such a resonance is unusual for wave problem in unbounded domains and corresponds to a non-zero embedded eigenvalue of infinite multiplicity of the underlying operator. The present paper deals with the wave propagation in a particular two dimensional structure, obtained from a localized perturbation of a reference periodic medium. This reference medium is a ladder like domain, namely a thin periodic structure (the thickness being characterized by a small parameter $\epsilon > 0$) whose limit (as $\epsilon$ tends to 0) is a periodic graph. The localized perturbation consists in changing the geometry of the reference medium by modifying the thickness of one rung of the ladder. Considering the scalar Helmholtz equation with Neumann boundary conditions in this domain, we wonder whether such a geometrical perturbation is able to produce localized eigenmodes. To address this question, we use a standard approach of asymptotic analysis that consists of three main steps. We first find the formal limit of the eigenvalue problem as the $\epsilon$ tends to 0. In the present case, it corresponds to an eigenvalue problem for a second order differential operator defined along the periodic graph. Then, we proceed to an explicit calculation of the spectrum of the limit operator. Finally, we prove that the spectrum of the initial operator is close to the spectrum of the limit operator. In particular, we prove the existence of localized modes provided that the geometrical perturbation consists in diminishing the width of one rung of the periodic thin structure. Moreover, in that case, it is possible to create as many eigenvalues as one wants, provided that $\epsilon$ is small enough. Numerical experiments illustrate the theoretical results.

In this work, we investigate mathematical models for electromagnetic wave propagation in dispersive isotropic media. We emphasize the link between physical requirements and mathematical properties of the models. A particular attention is devoted to the notion of non-dissipativity and passivity. We consider successively the case of so-called local media and general passive media. The models are studied through energy techniques, spectral theory and dispersion analysis of plane waves. In this note, we exhibit a three dimensional structure that permits to guide waves. This structure is obtained by a geometrical perturbation of a 3D periodic domain that consists of a three dimensional grating of equi-spaced thin pipes oriented along three orthogonal directions. Homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions are imposed on the boundary of the domain. The diameter of the section of the pipes, of order $\epsilon$ \textgreater{} 0, is supposed to be small. We prove that, for $\epsilon$ small enough, shrinking the section of one line of the grating by a factor of $\sqrt$ $\mu$ (0 \textless{} $\mu$ \textless{} 1) creates guided modes that propagate along the perturbed line. Our result relies on the asymptotic analysis (with respect to $\epsilon$) of the spectrum of the Laplace-Neumann operator in this structure. We explore the spectral properties of the time-dependent Maxwell's equations for a plane interface between a metamaterial represented by the Drude model and the vacuum, which fill respectively complementary half-spaces. We construct explicitly a generalized Fourier transform which diagonalizes the Hamiltonian that describes the propagation of transverse electric waves. This transform appears as an operator of decomposition on a family of generalized eigenfunctions of the problem. We study the propagation of acoustic waves in a fluid that is contained in a thin two-dimensional tube, and that it is moving with a velocity profile that only depends on the transversal coordinate of the tube. The governing equations are the Galbrun equations, or, equivalently, the linearized Euler equations. We analyze the approximate model that was recently derived by Bonnet-Bendhia, Durufl\'e and Joly to describe the propagation of the acoustic waves in the limit when the width of the tube goes to zero. We study this model for strictly monotonic stable velocity profiles. We prove that the equations of the model of Bonnet-Bendhia, Durufl\'e and Joly are well posed, i.e., that there is a unique global solution, and that the solution depends continuously on the initial data. Moreover, we prove that for smooth profiles the solution grows at most as $t^3$ as $t \to \infty$, and that for piecewise linear profiles it grows at most as $t^4$. This establishes the stability of the model in a weak sense. These results are obtained constructing a quasi-explicit representation of the solution. Our quasi-explicit representation gives a physical interpretation of the propagation of acoustic waves in the fluid and it provides an efficient way to compute numerically the solution., Comment: 35 pages, 4 figures

This report is dedicated to the construction and analysis of so-called Generalized Impedance Boundary Conditions (GIBCs) used in electromagnetic scattering problems from imperfect conductors as higher order approximations of a perfect conductor condition. We consider here the 3-D case with Maxwell equations in a harmonic regime. The construction of GIBCs is based on a scaled asymptotic expansion with respect to the skin depth. The asymptotic expansion is theoretically justified at any order and we give explicit expressions till the third order. These expressions are used to derive the GIBCs. The associated boundary value problem is analyzed and error estimates are obtained in terms of the skin depth.
