The implementation of a monolithic fiber-optically coupled CMOS-based TemCam-XF416 camera into our ultra-high vacuum (UHV) ultrafast reflection high-energy electron diffraction setup is reported. A combination of a pumpable gate valve and a self-built cooling collar allows UHV conditions to be reached without the need to remove the heat-sensitive device. The water-cooled collar is mounted to the camera housing and prevents heating of the detector upon bake-out of the UHV chamber. The TemCam provides an one order of magnitude higher spatial resolution than the previously used microchannel plate (MCP) based detector (Burle Chevron 3040FM) which enables a 30% higher resolution in reciprocal space. The low background intensity and the 4$\times$ lager dynamic range enables analysis of the diffuse intensity of the diffraction pattern like Kikuchi lines and bands. A key advantage over the previous MCP detector is the complete absence of the blooming effect, which enables the quantitative spot profile analysis of the diffraction spots. The critical behavior of the order-disorder phase transition in the buckled dimer structure of the Si(001) surface is investigated both theoretically by means of first-principles calculations and experimentally by spot profile analysis low-energy electron diffraction (SPA-LEED). We use density functional theory (DFT) with three different functionals commonly used for Si to determine the coupling constants of an effective lattice Hamiltonian describing the dimer interactions. Experimentally, the phase transition from the low-temperature $c(4 {\times} 2)$- to the high-temperature $p(2 {\times} 1)$-reconstructed surface is followed through the intensity and width of the superstructure spots within the temperature range 78-400 K. Near the critical temperature $T_c = 190.6\,\mathrm{K}$, we observe universal critical behavior of spot intensities and correlation lengths which falls into the universality class of the two-dimensional (2D) Ising model. From the ratio of correlation lengths along and across the dimer rows we determine effective nearest-neighbor couplings of an anisotropic 2D Ising model, $J_\parallel = (-24.9 \pm 0.9_\mathrm{stat} \pm 1.3_\mathrm{sys})\,\mathrm{meV}$ and $J_\perp = (-0.8 \pm 0.1_\mathrm{stat})\,\mathrm{meV}$. We find that the experimentally determined coupling constants of the Ising model can be reconciled with those of the more complex lattice Hamiltonian from DFT when the critical behavior is of primary interest. The anisotropy of the interactions derived from the experimental data via the 2D Ising model is best matched by DFT calculations using the PBEsol functional. The trends in the calculated anisotropy are consistent with the surface stress anisotropy predicted by the DFT functionals, pointing towards the role of surface stress reduction as a driving force for establishing the $c(4 {\times} 2)$-reconstructed ground state.

The topology of the electronic band structure of solids can be described by its Berry curvature distribution across the Brillouin zone. We theoretically introduce and experimentally demonstrate a general methodology based on the measurement of energy- and momentum-resolved optical transition rates, allowing to reveal signatures of Berry curvature texture in reciprocal space. By performing time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy of atomically thin WSe$_2$ using polarization-modulated excitations, we demonstrate that excitons become an asset in extracting the quantum geometrical properties of solids. The coupling energies between the buckled dimers of the Si(001) surface were determined through analysis of the anisotropic critical behavior of its order-disorder phase transition. Spot profiles in high-resolution low-energy electron diffraction as a function of temperature were analyzed within the framework of the anisotropic two-dimensional Ising model. The validity of this approach is justified by the large ratio of correlation lengths, $\xi_\parallel^+/\xi_\perp^+ = 5.2$ of the fluctuating $c(4 {\times} 2)$ domains above the critical temperature $T_\mathrm{c} = (190.6 \pm 10)$ K. We obtain effective couplings $J_\parallel = (-24.9 \pm 1.3)$ meV along the dimer rows and $J_\perp = (-0.8 \pm 0.1)$ meV across the dimer rows, i.e., antiferromagnetic-like coupling of the dimers with $c(4 {\times} 2)$ symmetry., Comment: Accepted for publication at Physical Review Letters on 02Feb23

We study theoretically effects of an anisotropic elastic strain on the exciton energy spectrum fine structure and optical selection rules in atom-thin crystals based on transition-metal dichalcogenides. The presence of strain breaks the chiral selection rules at the $\bm K$-points of the Brillouin zone and makes optical transitions linearly polarized. The orientation of the induced linear polarization is related to the main axes of the strain tensor. Elastic strain provides an additive contribution to the exciton fine structure splitting in agreement with experimental evidence obtained from uniaxially strained WSe$_2$ monolayer. The applied strain also induces momentum-dependent Zeeman splitting. Depending on the strain orientation and magnitude, Dirac points with a linear dispersion can be formed in the exciton energy spectrum. We provide a symmetry analysis of the strain effects and develop a microscopic theory for all relevant strain-induced contributions to the exciton fine structure Hamiltonian., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures

Elemental rhenium exhibiting type-II superconductivity has been previously reported to break time-reversal symmetry in the superconducting state. We have investigated an arc-melted sample of rhenium exhibiting type-I superconductivity. Low temperature zero-field muon-spin relaxation measurements indicate that time-reversal symmetry is preserved in the superconducting state. Muon diffusion is observed, which is due to quantum mechanical tunneling between interstitial sites. The normal state behavior is characterized by the conduction electrons screening the muons and thermal broadening, and is typical for a metal. Energy asymmetries between muon trapping sites and the superconducting energy gap also characterize the superconducting state behavior., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures

Two-dimensional halide perovskites are among intensely studied materials platforms profiting from solution based growth and chemical flexibility. They feature exceptionally strong interactions among electronic, optical as well as vibrational excitations and hold a great potential for future optoelectronic applications. A key feature for these materials is the occurrence of structural phase transitions that can impact their functional properties, including the electronic band gap and optical response dominated by excitons. However, to what extent the phase-transitions in two-dimensional perovskites alter the fundamental exciton properties remains barely explored so far. Here, we study the influence of the phase transition on both exciton binding energy and exciton diffusion, demonstrating their robust nature across the phase transition. These findings are unexpected in view of the associated substantial changes of the free carrier masses, strongly contrast broadly considered effective mass and drift-diffusion transport mechanisms, highlighting the unusual nature of excitons in two-dimensional perovskites.

Radiative recombination of excitons dressed by the interactions with free charge carriers often occurs under simultaneous excitation of either electrons or holes to unbound states. This phenomenon, known as the electron recoil effect, manifests itself in pronounced, asymmetric spectral lineshapes of the resulting emission. We study the electron recoil effect experimentally in electrically-tunable monolayer semiconductors and derive it theoretically using both trion and Fermi-polaron pictures. Time-resolved analysis of the recoil lineshapes is employed to access transient, non-equilibrium states of the exciton-carrier complexes. We demonstrate cooling of the initially overheated populations on the picosecond timescales and reveal the impact of lattice temperature and free carrier density. Both thermally activated phonons and the presence of free charges are shown to accelerate equilibration. Finally, we find strong correlations between relaxation times from recoil analysis and luminescence rise times, providing a consistent interpretation for the initial dynamics of trion/Fermi-polaron states.

We report an experimental study of temperature-dependent spectral lineshapes of phonon side-band emission stemming from dark excitons in monolayer and bilayer WSe$_{2}$. Using photoluminescence spectroscopy in the range from 4 to 100K, we observe a pronounced asymmetry in the phonon-assisted luminescence from momentum-indirect exciton reservoirs. We demonstrate that the corresponding spectral profiles are distinct from those of bright excitons with direct radiative decay pathways. The lineshape asymmetry reflects thermal distribution of exciton states with finite center-of-mass momenta, characteristic for phonon sideband emission. The extracted temperature of the exciton reservoirs is found to generally follow that of the crystal lattice, with deviations reflecting overheated populations. The latter are most pronounced in the bilayer case and at lowest temperatures. Our results add to the understanding of phonon-assisted recombination of momentum-dark excitons and, more generally, establish means to access the thermal distribution of finite-momentum excitons in atomically thin semiconductors with indirect bandgaps.

Atomically thin layered van der Waals heterostructures feature exotic and emergent optoelectronic properties. With growing interest in these novel quantum materials, the microscopic understanding of fundamental interfacial coupling mechanisms is of capital importance. Here, using multidimensional photoemission spectroscopy, we provide a layer- and momentum-resolved view on ultrafast interlayer electron and energy transfer in a monolayer-WSe$_2$/graphene heterostructure. Depending on the nature of the optically prepared state, we find the different dominating transfer mechanisms: while electron injection from graphene to WSe$_2$ is observed after photoexcitation of quasi-free hot carriers in the graphene layer, we establish an interfacial Meitner-Auger energy transfer process following the excitation of excitons in WSe$_2$. By analysing the time-energy-momentum distributions of excited-state carriers with a rate-equation model, we distinguish these two types of interfacial dynamics and identify the ultrafast conversion of excitons in WSe$_2$ to valence band transitions in graphene. Microscopic calculations find interfacial dipole-monopole coupling underlying the Meitner-Auger energy transfer to dominate over conventional F\"orster- and Dexter-type interactions, in agreement with the experimental observations. We experimentally demonstrate time-resolved exciton propagation in a monolayer semiconductor at cryogenic temperatures. Monitoring phonon-assisted recombination of dark states, we find a highly unusual case of exciton diffusion. While at 5 K the diffusivity is intrinsically limited by acoustic phonon scattering, we observe a pronounced decrease of the diffusion coefficient with increasing temperature, far below the activation threshold of higher-energy phonon modes. This behavior corresponds neither to well-known regimes of semiclassical free-particle transport nor to the thermally activated hopping in systems with strong localization. Its origin is discussed in the framework of both microscopic numerical and semi-phenomenological analytical models illustrating the observed characteristics of nonclassical propagation. Challenging the established description of mobile excitons in monolayer semiconductors, these results open up avenues to study quantum transport phenomena for excitonic quasiparticles in atomically-thin van der Waals materials and their heterostructures.

The exceptionally strong Coulomb interaction in semiconducting transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) gives rise to a rich exciton landscape consisting of bright and dark exciton states. At elevated densities, excitons can interact through exciton-exciton annihilation (EEA), an Auger-like recombination process limiting the efficiency of optoelectronic applications. Although EEA is a well-known and particularly important process in atomically thin semiconductors determining exciton lifetimes and affecting transport at elevated densities, its microscopic origin has remained elusive. In this joint theory-experiment study combining microscopic and material-specific theory with time- and temperature-resolved photoluminescence measurements, we demonstrate the key role of dark intervalley states that are found to dominate the EEA rate in monolayer WSe$_2$. We reveal an intriguing, characteristic temperature dependence of Auger scattering in this class of materials with an excellent agreement between theory and experiment. Our study provides microscopic insights into the efficiency of technologically relevant Auger scattering channels within the remarkable exciton landscape of atomically thin semiconductors., Comment: 17 pages, 6 figures

Atomically thin semiconductors provide an excellent platform to study intriguing many-particle physics of tightly-bound excitons. In particular, the properties of tungsten-based transition metal dichalcogenides are determined by a complex manifold of bright and dark exciton states. While dark excitons are known to dominate the relaxation dynamics and low-temperature photoluminescence, their impact on the spatial propagation of excitons has remained elusive. In our joint theory-experiment study, we address this intriguing regime of dark state transport by resolving the spatio-temporal exciton dynamics in hBN-encapsulated WSe$_2$ monolayers after resonant excitation. We find clear evidence of an unconventional, time-dependent diffusion during the first tens of picoseconds, exhibiting strong deviation from the steady-state propagation. Dark exciton states are initially populated by phonon emission from the bright states, resulting in creation of hot excitons whose rapid expansion leads to a transient increase of the diffusion coefficient by more than one order of magnitude. These findings are relevant for both fundamental understanding of the spatio-temporal exciton dynamics in atomically thin materials as well as their technological application by enabling rapid diffusion., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures, supplementary info (7 pages, 6 figures)

We experimentally demonstrate dressing of the excited exciton states by a continuously tunable Fermi sea of free charge carriers in a monolayer semiconductor. It represents an unusual scenario of two-particle excitations of charged excitons previously inaccessible in conventional material systems. We identify excited state trions, accurately determine their binding energies in the zero-density limit for both electron- and hole-doped regimes, and observe emerging many-body phenomena at elevated doping. Combining experiment and theory we gain access to the intra-exciton coupling facilitated by the interaction with free charge carriers. We provide evidence for a process of autoionization for quasiparticles, a unique scattering pathway available for excited states in atomic systems. Finally, we demonstrate a complete transfer of the optical transition strength from the excited excitons to dressed excitons, Fermi polarons, as well as the associated light emission from their non-equilibrium populations.

Two-dimensional hybrid perovskites are currently in the spotlight of condensed matter and nanotechnology research due to their intriguing optoelectronic and vibrational properties with emerging potential for light-harvesting and -emitting applications. While it is known that these natural quantum wells host tightly bound excitons, the mobilities of these fundamental optical excitations at the heart of the optoelectronic applications are still largely unexplored. Here, we directly monitor the diffusion of excitons through ultrafast emission microscopy from liquid helium to room temperature in hBN-encapsulated two-dimensional hybrid perovskites. We find very fast diffusion with characteristic hallmarks of free exciton propagation for all temperatures above 50 K. In the cryogenic regime we observe nonlinear, anomalous behavior with an exceptionally rapid expansion of the exciton cloud followed by a very slow and even negative effective diffusion. We discuss our findings in view of efficient exciton-phonon coupling, highlighting two-dimensional hybrids as promising platforms for many-body physics research and optoelectronic applications on the nanoscale.

Bound electron-hole excitonic states are generally not expected to form with charges of negative effective mass. We identify such excitons in a single layer of the semiconductor WSe2, where they give rise to narrow-band upconverted photoluminescence in the UV, at an energy of 1.66 eV above the first band-edge excitonic transition. Negative band curvature and strong electron-phonon coupling result in a cascaded phonon progression with equidistant peaks in the photoluminescence spectrum, resolvable to ninth order. Ab initio GW-BSE calculations with full electron-hole correlations unmask and explain the admixture of upper conduction-band states to this complex many-body excitation: an optically bright, bound exciton in resonance with the semiconductor continuum. This exciton is responsible for atomic-like quantum-interference phenomena such as electromagnetically induced transparency. Since band curvature can be tuned by pressure or strain, synthesis of exotic quasiparticles such as flat-band excitons with infinite reduced mass becomes feasible.

Monolayers of transition metal dichalcogenides present an intriguing platform to investigate the interplay of excitonic complexes in two dimensional semiconductors. Here, we use optical spectroscopy to study light-matter coupling and non-equilibrium relaxation dynamics of three-particle exciton states, commonly known as trions. We identify the consequences of the exchange interaction for the trion finestructure in tungsten-based monolayer materials from variational calculations and experimentally determine the resulting characteristic differences in their oscillator strength. It allows us to quantitatively extract trion populations from time-resolved photoluminescence measurements and monitor their dynamics after off-resonant optical injection. At liquid helium temperature we observe pronounced non-equilibrium distribution of the trions during their lifetime with comparatively slow equilibration that occurs on time-scales up to several 100's of ps. In addition, we find an intriguing regime of population inversion at lowest excitation densities that builds up and is maintained during 10's of picoseconds. With increased lattice temperature the equilibrium is established more rapidly and the inversion disappears, highlighting the role of thermal activation for efficient scattering between exchange-split trions.

Tightly bound excitons in monolayer semiconductors represent a versatile platform to study two-dimensional propagation of neutral quasiparticles. Their intrinsic properties, however, can be severely obscured by spatial energy fluctuations due to a high sensitivity to the immediate environment. Here, we take advantage of the encapsulation of individual layers in hexagonal boron nitride to strongly suppress environmental disorder. Diffusion of excitons is then directly monitored using time- and spatially-resolved emission microscopy at ambient conditions. We consistently find very efficient propagation with linear diffusion coefficients up to 10\,cm$^2$/s, corresponding to room temperature effective mobilities as high as 400\,cm$^2$/Vs as well as a correlation between rapid diffusion and short population lifetime. At elevated densities we detect distinct signatures of many-particle interactions and consequences of strongly suppressed Auger-like exciton-exciton annihilation. A combination of analytical and numerical theoretical approaches is employed to provide pathways towards comprehensive understanding of the observed linear and non-linear propagation phenomena. We emphasize the role of dark exciton states and present a mechanism for diffusion facilitated by free electron hole plasma from entropy-ionized excitons.

The interplay of optics, dynamics and transport is crucial for the design of novel optoelectronic devices, such as photodetectors and solar cells. In this context, transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have received much attention. Here, strongly bound excitons dominate optical excitation, carrier dynamics and diffusion processes. While the first two have been intensively studied, there is a lack of fundamental understanding of non-equilibrium phenomena associated with exciton transport that is of central importance e.g. for high efficiency light harvesting. In this work, we provide microscopic insights into the interplay of exciton propagation and many-particle interactions in TMDs. Based on a fully quantum mechanical approach and in excellent agreement with photoluminescence measurements, we show that Auger recombination and emission of hot phonons act as a heating mechanism giving rise to strong spatial gradients in excitonic temperature. The resulting thermal drift leads to an unconventional exciton diffusion characterized by spatial exciton halos.
