We report on temperature-dependent soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) measurements utilizing linearly polarized synchrotron radiation to probe magnetic phase transitions in iron-rich Fe1+yTe. X-ray magnetic linear dichroism (XMLD) signals, which sense magnetic ordering processes at surfaces, start to increase monotonically below the N\'eel temperature TN = 57 K. This increase is due to a progressive bicollinear antiferromagnetic (AFM) alignment of Fe spins of the monoclinic Fe1+yTe parent phase. This AFM alignment was achieved by a [100]-oriented biasing field favoring a single-domain state during cooling across TN. Our specific heat and magnetization measurements confirm the bulk character of this AFM phase transition. On longer time scales, however, we observe that the field-biased AFM state is highly unstable even at the lowest temperature of T = 3 K. After switching off the biasing field, the XMLD signal decays exponentially with a time constant {\tau} = 1506 s. The initial XMLD signal is restored only upon repeating a cycle consisting of heating and field-cooling through TN. We explain the time effect by a gradual formation of a multi-domain state with 90 deg rotated AFM domains, promoted by structural disorder, facilitating the motion of twin-domains. Significant disorder in our Fe1+yTe sample is evident from our X-ray diffraction and specific heat data. Structural engineers play an increasing role in ensuring the transition towards a more sustainable construction sector: a) they are responsible for the design of the most resource- and energy-intensive part of buildings and infrastructure, and b) they regularly interact with architects, contractors, and clients, and hence are full stakeholders in the overall decision process. Traditionally, structural engineers follow two paths to reduce structure environmental impacts: 1) minimizing the volume of material, and 2) adopting low impact (e.g. low carbon) materials. A third strategy that has recently re-emerged in practice and research is the reuse of structural components over multiple service cycles, which allows drastically reducing raw material use, reprocessing energy, and waste. Therefore, employing reuse strategies in structural design has considerable potential to reduce structure environmental impacts further. Although reuse is not new, systematic adoption in practice implies an important paradigm shift: rather than manufacturing components after the structural system has been designed, the system must be synthesized from a stock of available components. The first part of our contribution provides an overview of historic and contemporary structures that efficiently reuse structural components. It also highlights the influence of component reuse on the structural design process. The second part presents a new computational tool for the conceptual design of structures from a stock of reclaimed elements. The tool combines Combinatorial Equilibrium Modelling, graphic statics, efficient Best-Fit heuristics, and Life Cycle Assessment to explore different design options in a user-interactive way and with almost real-time feedback. The method applicability is demonstrated through a realistic case study for the design of a complex 3D spatial structure made of reclaimed structural elements originating from deconstructed buildings in Switzerland. The investigation of the magnetic phase transitions in the parent compounds of Fe-based superconductors is regarded essential for an understanding of the pairing mechanism in the related superconducting compounds. Even though the chemical and electronic properties of these materials are often strongly inhomogeneous on a nanometer length scale, studies of the magnetic phase transitions using spatially resolved experimental techniques are still scarce. Here, we present a real space spin-resolved scanning tunneling microscopy investigation of the surface of Fe1+yTe single crystals with different excess Fe content, y, which are continuously driven through the magnetic phase transition. For Fe1.08Te, the transition into the low-temperature monoclinic phase is accompanied by the appearance of a chevron-patterned structural ordering due to the four 90° rotational domains of the monoclinic lattice. Each of the structural domains contains locally commensurate nanoscale diagonal double stripe antiferromagnetic spin order domains with π-phase slips accross domain boundaries. In the low-temperature phase of Fe1.12Te, on the other hand, the chevron pattern gets rather narrow and less well-defined, and an additional 90° rotated component of the spin-order with local plaquette order emerges. The simultaneous imaging of spin and structural order we show here gives valuable insights into the nature of the magneto-structural domains of Fe1+yTe near the tricritical point, which presumably add to the understanding of the mechanism of superconductivity in the related Fe1+yTe x Se1−x material. Varying excess Fe content in Fe1+yTe single crystals drives both magnetic and structural phase transitions, which are imaged by a real space spin-resolved probe. A team led by Roland Wiesendanger from Hamburg Unisersity with colleagues from Aarhus University present a real space spin-resolved scanning tunneling microscopy investigation on the surface of Fe1+yTe single crystals with different excess Fe content. They found that for Fe1.08Te, the low temperature monoclinic phase not only accompanies a chevron-patterned structural order, but also hosts local nanoscale diagonal double stripe antiferromagnetic spin orders, whereas for Fe1.12Te, the chevron pattern becomes less apparent, but a local plaquette order emerges along with a rotated spin-order. The simultaneous imaging of spin and structural order gives valuable insights into the nature of the magneto-structural domains of Fe1+yTe and the mechanism of superconductivity in related material.

Magnetotransport constitutes a useful probe to understand the interplay between electronic band topology and magnetism in spintronic devices. A recent theory of Lu and Shen [Phys. Rev. Lett. 112, 146601 (2014)] on magnetically doped topological insulators predicts that quantum corrections $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}\ensuremath{\kappa}$ to the temperature dependence of conductivity can change sign across the Curie transition. This phenomenon has been attributed to a suppression of the Berry phase of the topological surface states at the Fermi level, caused by a magnetic energy gap. Here, we demonstrate experimentally that $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}\ensuremath{\kappa}$ can reverse its sign even when the Berry phase at the Fermi level remains unchanged. The contradictory behavior to theory predictions is resolved by extending the model by Lu and Shen to a nonmonotonic temperature scaling of the inelastic scattering length showing a turning point at the Curie transition.

The electronic structure of thin films of FeTe grown on Bi

The electronic structure of thin films of FeTe grown on Bi$_2$Te$_3$ is investigated using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, scanning tunneling microscopy and first principles calculations. As a comparison, data from cleaved bulk \FeTe taken under the same experimental conditions is also presented. Due to the substrate and thin film symmetry, FeTe thin films grow on Bi$_2$Te$_3$ in three domains, rotated by 0$^{\circ}$, 120$^{\circ}$, and 240$^{\circ}$. This results in a superposition of photoemission intensity from the domains, complicating the analysis. However, by combining bulk and thin film data, it is possible to partly disentangle the contributions from three domains. We find a close similarity between thin film and bulk electronic structure and an overall good agreement with first principles calculations, assuming a p-doping shift of 65~meV for the bulk and a renormalization factor of around 2. By tracking the change of substrate electronic structure upon film growth, we find indications of an electron transfer from the FeTe film to the substrate. No significant change of the film's electronic structure or doping is observed when alkali atoms are dosed onto the surface. This is ascribed to the film's high density of states at the Fermi energy. This behavior is also supported by the ab-initio calculations.

We studied the temperature dependence of the diagonal double-stripe spin order in one and two unit cell thick layers of FeTe grown on the topological insulator Bi_2Te_3 via spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy. The spin order persists up to temperatures which are higher than the transition temperature reported for bulk Fe_1+yTe with lowest possible excess Fe content y. The enhanced spin order stability is assigned to a strongly decreased y with respect to the lowest values achievable in bulk crystal growth, and effects due to the interface between the FeTe and the topological insulator. The result is relevant for understanding the recent observation of a coexistence of superconducting correlations and spin order in this system., Comment: 16 pages and 4 figures

We report scanning tunnelling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM/STS) studies on one and two unit cell (UC) high FeSe thin films grown on Bi

We report on the structural and electronic properties of a single bismuth layer intercalated underneath a graphene layer grown on an Ir(111) single crystal. Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) reveals a hexagonal surface structure and a dislocation network upon Bi intercalation, which we attribute to a $\sqrt{3}\times\sqrt{3}R30{\deg}$ Bi structure on the underlying Ir(111) surface. Ab-initio calculations show that this Bi structure is the most energetically favorable, and also illustrate that STM measurements are most sensitive to C atoms in close proximity to intercalated Bi atoms. Additionally, Bi intercalation induces a band gap ($E_g=0.42\,$eV) at the Dirac point of graphene and an overall n-doping ($\sim 0.39\,$eV), as seen in angular-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We attribute the emergence of the band gap to the dislocation network which forms favorably along certain parts of the moir\'e structure induced by the graphene/Ir(111) interface., Comment: 5 figures

Máme zprávy o zhášení jednotlivých Ni adatom momentů na Te-zakončeného BI2 Te2Se a Bi2Te3 topologických izolátor povrchy. Tento efekt je známý jako chybějící x-ray magnetické cirkulární dichroismus pro rezonanční přechody L3,2 Částečně naplní do Ni 3d stavů teorie odvozené od obsazení nd = 9,2. Na základě srovnávací studie Ni a Fe pomocí řádkovací tunelový mikroskop a ab initio výpočtů jsme schopni se týkají konkrétního prvku Tvorba moment na místní kritérium Stoner. Naše teorie pořady dělal, zatímco Fe adatoms vytvářejí velké spin momenty z MS = 2.54μB s out-ofrovině anizotropie v důsledku dostatečně velkou hustotu stavů na Fermiho energie, Ni zůstává hluboko pod prahem na efektivní Stoner pro tvorbu místní moment. S úrovní Fermi setrvání v mezera bulk band po adatom depozice, nonmagnetic Ni a přednostně out-of-rovině orientované magnetické Fe s podobnými strukturálními reality na BI2 TE2 Se plochy představují ideální platformu pro studium účinků off-on time-obrácení porušení symetrie na topologické povrchových stavů. We report on the quenching of single Ni adatom moments on Te-terminated Bi2 Te2Se and Bi2Te3 topological insulator surfaces. The effect is noted as a missing x-ray magnetic circular dichroism for resonant L3,2 transitions into partially filled Ni 3d states of theory-derived occupancy nd = 9.2. On the basis of a comparative study of Ni and Fe using scanning tunneling microscopy and ab initio calculations, we are able to relate the element specific moment formation to a local Stoner criterion. Our theory shows that while Fe adatoms form large spin moments of ms = 2.54μB with out-of-plane anisotropy due to a sufficiently large density of states at the Fermi energy, Ni remains well below an effective Stoner threshold for local moment formation. With the Fermi level remaining in the bulk band gap after adatom deposition, nonmagnetic Ni and preferentially out-of-plane oriented magnetic Fe with similar structural properties on Bi2 Te2 Se surfaces constitute a perfect platform to study the off-on effects of time-reversal symmetry breaking on topological surface states.

Homojunctions between Bi$_2$Se$_3$ and its Mn-doped phase are investigated as a sample geometry to study the influence of spin degrees of freedom on topological insulator properties. $n$ quintuple layers (QLs) of Bi$_2$Se$_3$ are grown ontop of Mn-doped Bi$_2$Se$_3$ by molecular beam epitaxy for $0\le n \le 30\,$QLs, allowing to unhamperedly monitor the development of electronic and topological properties by surface sensitive techniques like angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy. With increasing $n$, a Mn-induced gap at the Dirac point is gradually filled in an "hourglass" fashion to reestablish a topological surface state at $n \sim 9\,$QLs. Our results suggest a competition of upwards and downwards band bending effects due to the presence of an n-p type interface, which can be used to tailor topological and quantum well states independently., 5 pages, 5 figures

The operation of ground-coupled heat pumps in combination with solar collectors requires comprising knowledge of the heat pump behavior under non-standard conditions. Especially higher temperatures and varying flow rates in comparison to non-solar systems have to be taken into account. Furthermore the dynamic behavior becomes more important. At ISFH, steady-state and dynamic tests of a typical brine/water heat pump have been carried out in order to analyze its behavior under varying operation conditions. It has been shown, that rising source temperatures do only significantly increase the coefficient of performance (COP), if the source temperature is below 10–20 °C, depending on the temperature lift between source and sink. The flow rate, which has been varied both on the source and the sink side, only showed a minor influence on the exergetic efficiency. Additionally a heat pump model for TRNSYS has been validated under non-standard conditions. The results are assessed by means of TRNSYS simulations.
