Due to the major role of the sun in heating the earth's surface, the atmospheric planetary boundary layer over land is inherently marked by a diurnal cycle. The afternoon transition, the period of the day that connects the daytime dry convective boundary layer to the night-time stable boundary layer, still has a number of unanswered scientific questions. This phase of the diurnal cycle is challenging from both modelling and observational perspectives: it is transitory, most of the forcings are small or null and the turbulence regime changes from fully convective, close to homogeneous and isotropic, toward a more heterogeneous and intermittent state. These issues motivated the BLLAST (Boundary-Layer Late Afternoon and Sunset Turbulence) field campaign that was conducted from 14 June to 8 July 2011 in southern France, in an area of complex and heterogeneous terrain. A wide range of instrumented platforms including full-size aircraft, remotely piloted aircraft systems, remote-sensing instruments, radiosoundings, tethered balloons, surface flux stations and various meteorological towers were deployed over different surface types. The boundary layer, from the earth's surface to the free troposphere, was probed during the entire day, with a focus and intense observation periods that were conducted from midday until sunset. The BLLAST field campaign also provided an opportunity to test innovative measurement systems, such as new miniaturized sensors, and a new technique for frequent radiosoundings of the low troposphere. Twelve fair weather days displaying various meteorological conditions were extensively documented during the field experiment. The boundary-layer growth varied from one day to another depending on many contributions including stability, advection, subsidence, the state of the previous day's residual layer, as well as local, meso-or synoptic scale conditions. Ground-based measurements combined with tethered-balloon and airborne observations captured the turbulence decay from the surface throughout the whole boundary layer and documented the evolution of the turbulence characteristic length scales during the transition period. Closely integrated with the field experiment, numerical studies are now underway with a complete hierarchy of models to support the data interpretation and improve the model representations.

We report an increase in winter (DJF) cyclone densities in the areas around Svalbard and in northwestern Barents Sea and a decrease in cyclone densities in southeastern Barents Sea during 1979–2016. Despite high interannual variability, the trends are significant at the 90% confidence level. The changes appear as a result of a shift into a more meridional winter storm track in the high‐latitude North Atlantic, associated with a positive trend in the Scandinavian Pattern. A significant decrease in the Brunt–Väisälä frequency east of Svalbard and a significant increase in the Eady Growth Rate north of Svalbard indicate increased baroclinicity, favouring enhanced cyclone activity in these regions. For the first time, we apply composite analysis to explicitly address regional consequences of these wintertime changes in the high‐latitude North Atlantic. We find a tendency toward a warmer and more moist atmospheric state in the Barents Sea and over Svalbard with increased cyclone activity around Svalbard. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article presents information on the social issues in Cook Islands. Crime in the Cook Islands has been very mild compared to other countries. However, the 2002-2003 year revealed a growing problem with crime, and an apparent decline in morals and ethics. The Cook Islands has been identified as the third highest exporter into New Zealand of illegal products such as turtle meat and shells, as well as giant clam meat. One of the government's continuing problems centers on its offshore banking industry, which has been targeted by countries such as the United States. It has tried unsuccessfully to get the Cook Islands removed from the list of eleven countries blacklisted by the Financial Action Task Force for questionable activities.

ABSTRACT Can exposure to a doctored photograph of a plausible yet fictitious childhood event create false memories in adults? Twenty years ago, (Wade, K. A., Garry, M., Don Read, J., & Lindsay, D. S. (2002). A picture is worth a thousand lies: Using false photographs to create false childhood memories. Psychonomic Bulletin & Review , 9 (3), 597-603) found that half of the participants reported false beliefs or memories after multiple interview sessions about a doctored photograph of themselves as children on a fictitious hot air balloon ride. In this replication, which rigorously recreated the method and procedure of Wade et al. (2002), participants were interviewed over three interview sessions using free recall and imagery techniques about three true and one fictitious childhood event photos. The balloon ride was modified to a culturally appropriate target event - a Viking ship ride - to ensure that the doctored photograph was functionally equivalent. The results showed almost identical patterns in the two studies: 40% (n = 8) of the participants reported partial or clear false beliefs or memories compared with 50% (n = 10) in the original study. The participants who reported false memories reported detailed and coherent memory narratives of the Viking ship ride not depicted in the doctored photograph. Our study successfully replicating the results of Wade et al. (2002), suggest that memories can relatively easily be implanted, regardless of cultural setting.

Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) patients with unmutated immunoglobulin heavy chain (IgHV) are at risk of early disease progression compared to patients with mutated IgHV. As a preventive strategy, we treated 19 previously untreated CLL patients with unmutated IgHV in a phase 1/2 trial (clinicaltrials.gov, NCT03939234) exploring the efficacy and toxicity of a therapeutic cancer vaccine containing peptides derived from programmed death ligand 1 (PD-L1) and ligand 2 (PD-L2), hoping to restore immunological control of the disease. According to the International Workshop on Chronic lymphocytic Leukemia (iwCLL) response criteria, no patients obtained a response; however, during follow-up, one patient had complete normalization of the peripheral lymphocyte count and remained in biochemical remission after a follow-up time of 15 months. At the end of treatment, one patient had progressed, and 17 patients had stable disease. During follow-up with a median time of 23.5 months since inclusion, seven patients had progressed, and eight patients had stable disease. The median time to first treatment (TTFT) from diagnosis was 90.3 months with a median follow-up time of 50.1 months. This apparent favorable outcome in TTFT needs to be investigated in a randomized setting, as our population may have been biased. More than 80% of patients obtained vaccine-specific immune responses, confirming the immunogenicity of the vaccine. The vaccine was generally well tolerated with only grade I-II adverse events. Although there were some signs of clinical effects, the vaccine seems to be insufficient as monotherapy in CLL, possibly due to a high tumor burden. Objectives: The study investigated the association between socio-economic status (SES) and self-reported chronic disease (CD) among the Palestinian population in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, and whether this association was similar in the refugee camps., Methods: We used data from representative samples in 2006 and 2010 collected by the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics. SES was defined by education, wealth and employment status. Associations between SES and CD were analysed and stratified by living in or outside refugee camps., Results: CD prevalence increased among men and decreased among women in all SES categories and the Odds Ratio for CD was higher inside than outside the refugee camps, except for women in 2006. In both 2006 and 2010 the odds ratio of CD was higher among the lowest SES groups. The pattern of the negative association between SES and CD was similar in and outside the refugee camps., Conclusions: We found that the highest burden of CD is among those with low SES. In spite of a higher CD Odds Ratio in the refugee camps, the pattern of association between SES and CD did not differ in the refugee camps.

Background: The purpose of the study was to estimate life expectancy and the average lifetime with and without chronic disease among male never smokers, ex-smokers and smokers living in the West Bank of the occupied Palestinian territory., Methods: The study used a life table for the West Bank male population and Danish relative risk estimates for death for smokers and ex-smokers vs. never smokers and utilized data from the Palestinian Family Survey 2010. Expected lifetime with and without chronic disease was estimated and the contributions from the mortality and the morbidity effect to smoking related difference in average lifetime with and without chronic disease were assessed by decomposition., Results: In the West bank 40% of the male population are smokers. Life expectancy of 15-year-old Palestinian men who would never start smoking was 59.5 years, 41.1 of which were expected to be without chronic disease. Ex-smokers could expect 57.9 years of remaining lifetime, 37.7 years of which without disease. For lifelong heavy smokers (> 20 cigarettes per day), the expected lifetime was reduced to 52.6 years, of which 38.5 years were without chronic disease. Of the total loss of 6.9 years of life expectancy among heavy smokers, the mortality effect accounted for 2.5 years without and 4.4 years with disease, whereas the morbidity effect was negligible., Conclusions: The high prevalence of smoking causes a considerable loss of life years and lifetime without chronic disease. We recommend the Palestinian health authorities to enforce the anti-smoking law.

Ex-smokers could expect 57·9 years of remaining life time, 37·7 years (35·9-39·4) of which would be without chronic disease. For life-long heavy smokers, the expected lifetime was 52·6 years, of which 38·5 years (37·3-39·7) would be without chronic disease. Of the total loss of 6·9 years of life expectancy in heavy smokers, the mortality effect accounted for 2·5 years without disease and 4·4 years with disease, whereas the morbidity effect was negligible. The morbidity component of the decomposition accounted for 1·7 years with disease for moderate smokers and 2·9 years without disease for ex-smokers., Interpretation: The high prevalence of smoking causes a considerable loss of life-years and life time without chronic disease. Results from studies based on microinfusions into seizure controlling brain sites (area tempestas, medial septum, perirhinal cortex, posterior piriform cortex) have shown that procyclidine, muscimol, caramiphen, and NBQX, but not ketamine, exert anticonvulsant effects against soman-induced seizures. The purpose of the present study was to examine whether levetiracetam (Keppra(®)) may enhance the anticonvulsant potency of the above drugs to become optimally effective when used systemically. Levetiracetam has a unique profile in preclinical models of epilepsy and has been shown to increase the potency of other antiepileptic drugs. The rats were pretreated with pyridostigmine (0.1mg/kg) to enhance survival and received anticonvulsants 20 min after onset of seizures evoked by soman (1.15 × LD(50)). The results showed that no single drug was able to terminate seizure activity. However, when levetiracetam (LEV; 50mg/kg) was combined with either procyclidine (PCD; 10mg/kg) or caramiphen (CMP; 10mg/kg) complete cessation of seizures was achieved, but the nicotinic antagonist mecamylamine was needed to induce full motor rest in some rats. In a subsequent experiment, rats were pretreated with HI-6 (125 mg/kg) to enhance survival and treatment started 40 min following seizure onset of a soman dose of 1.6 × LD(50). LEV (50mg/kg) combined with either PCD (20mg/kg) or CMP (20mg/kg) terminated seizure activity, but the survival rate was considerably higher for LEV+PCD than LEV+CMP. Both therapies could also save the lives of rats that were about to die 5-10 min after seizure onset. Two HLA-A2-positive patients with advanced stage IV melanoma were treated with monocyte-derived dendritic cells (DC) pulsed with either tumor peptide antigens from gp100, MART-1 and MAGE-3 alone or in combination with autologous oncolysates. Clinically, the rapid progression of disease was substantially stalled and both patients were alive for more than 15 months after initiation of therapy. Specific CTL reactivity against several tumor antigens was detectable in peripheral blood, which declined just before reactivation of disease progression. Furthermore, CD3 zeta-chain expression detected by Western lotting was decreased in PBL at this time. In summary, our data confirm that DC-based vaccinations induce peptide-specific T cells in the peripheral blood of advanced-stage melanoma patients. Although successful induction of systemic tumor antigen-specific CTL may not lead to objective clinical tumor regression, their presence are indicative of a prolonged survival., (Copyright 2001 Wiley-Liss, Inc.)
