The role of the military is often clear: identify, engage, and destroy the enemy. This is true of all conflicts throughout human history, with armies varying in complexity and scale. This function is distinct from that of policing, which aims to produce a structure to manage communities and provide public safety. The gap between these two paradigms has been rapidly reducing since 9/11, with the global threat of terrorism becoming a tool to justify increasing spending on securitization. This article speculates and debates this transition, demonstrating the key areas of discussion of targeted recruitment of military personnel or the challenge that such an approach has on the ideals of British policing. The piece hopes to examine current and historic discourse to examine whether this is a sleepwalk to authoritarian approaches or directed recruitment is simply an attempt to capture skills and talent to improve policing standards.

War is the most destructive of human actions, leaving a legacy of hatred, violence, and destruction which can often take decades to rebuild. The victims of war are endless, from those directly involved in the chaos, to the generations that follow and attempt to rebuild their shattered lives. Many experiences of the victims of war remain largely undiagnosed or even recognized, producing feelings of shame and fear that create the conditions for new conflicts to emerge. Academia is more than just analyzing data; it is the creation of a space in which to allow the recording of stories and reflections of those involved in major historical episodes. The piece hopes to provide an opportunity for just one military voice from the complex and chaotic period of “the Troubles” in Northern Ireland to speak and share their reflections to help understand the human cost of war.

In this period of global insecurity, sharing human experiences acts as a tool to preserve history, educate future generations, foster empathy, prevent revisionism, and honor those who have been affected by conflict. By sharing personal stories, individuals provide first-hand accounts of events, capturing the human perspective and emotions associated with war. This helps to preserve a comprehensive understanding of historical events. Hearing about the experiences of those who have lived through war can be a powerful educational tool. It allows people, especially the younger generations, to learn about the realities of armed conflict and the impact on individuals and societies. The voices from Ukraine in this article communicate the suffering, but also the hope of those caught up in the horrors, the losses and the fog of war.

Background: Current protein biomarkers are only moderately predictive at identifying individuals with mild traumatic brain injury or concussion. Therefore, more accurate diagnostic markers are needed for sport-related concussion. Methods: This was a multicenter, prospective, case-control study of athletes who provided blood samples and were diagnosed with a concussion or were a matched non-concussed control within the National Collegiate Athletic Association–Department of Defense Concussion Assessment, Research, and Education Consortium conducted between 2015 and 2019. The blood was collected within 48 h of injury to identify protein abnormalities at the acute and subacute timepoints. Athletes with concussion were divided into 6 h post-injury (0–6 h post-injury) and after 6 h post-injury (7–48 h post-injury) groups. We applied a highly multiplexed proteomic technique that used a DNA aptamers assay to target 1305 proteins in plasma samples from athletes with and without sport-related concussion. Results: A total of 140 athletes with concussion (79.3% males; aged 18.71 ± 1.10 years, mean ± SD) and 21 non-concussed athletes (76.2% males; 19.14 ± 1.10 years) were included in this study. We identified 338 plasma proteins that significantly differed in abundance (319 upregulated and 19 downregulated) in concussed athletes compared to non-concussed athletes. The top 20 most differentially abundant proteins discriminated concussed athletes from non-concussed athletes with an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.954 (95% confidence interval: 0.922‒0.986). Specifically, after 6 h of injury, the individual AUC of plasma erythrocyte membrane protein band 4.1 (EPB41) and alpha-synuclein (SNCA) were 0.956 and 0.875, respectively. The combination of EPB41 and SNCA provided the best AUC (1.000), which suggests this combination of candidate plasma biomarkers is the best for diagnosing concussion in athletes after 6 h of injury. Conclusion: Our data suggest that proteomic profiling may provide novel diagnostic protein markers and that a combination of EPB41 and SNCA is the most predictive biomarker of concussion after 6 h of injury.

In this article, we look at 21st-century warfare in the context of two great powers: Russia and America. Russian and American invasions and subsequent wars are evaluated in terms of why and how they are fought, legal and moral considerations, impact, outcomes, and consequences. The article examines similarities and differences in strategy and methods, expanding on the increasingly popular remote warfare. Finally, we assess the decisive role of science and technology in war, raising questions about the future of AI warfare.

OBJECTIVES/GOALS: The aim of thispaper is to raise awareness of the limitations of the current pMRI training paradigm and to recommend a standardization of skills to expand diversity among field-based neuroimaging technicians. METHODS/STUDY POPULATION: Currently, there are seven international brain research initiatives. The goal is to establish and understand the cultural values a society holds and how the outcomes of research may be adopted into societal practice. We must also consider the benefits of early detection amongst minoritized communities in neuroscience research. Neuroimaging in remote settings can allow patients to advocate more accurately for timely medical care which can lead to better health outcomes. According to the Journal of Neurological Sciences, neuroscience accounts for 9% of total medical publications. RESULTS/ANTICIPATED RESULTS: Neuroimaging research continues to evolve in terms of resolution and portability. T By harnessing diverse data, we are able to utilize advanced neuroimaging techniques and software technology to recognize trends amongst subgroups of individuals who were previously considered geographically inaccessible. DISCUSSION/SIGNIFICANCE: Despite the excitement and promise of portable neuroimaging devices, there is a fundamental need to establish standardized training procedures that can be accessed by individuals of all socioeconomic backgrounds.

Narratives on state and power are constructed and propagated through events such as the Platinum Jubilee, with all its grandeur, pomp and glory, and its stories of British military superiority, as well as the popular fictions of Hollywood films, the latest of which builds on the usual war narratives of heroism, risk and sacrifice, while concealing realities of weakness, decline and risk-free wars. The rise of high-tech assassins in drone warfare, which are heavily used by the UK and the US in the War on Terror, has eliminated combat and instead has turned killing into an unfeeling, amoral exercise of power, safely conducted from a distance.

BackgroundBy 2030, approximately 75 million adults will be living with Alzheimer disease and related dementias (ADRDs). ADRDs produce cognitive, emotional, and behavioral changes for persons living with dementia that undermine independence and produce considerable stressors for persons living with dementia and their spousal care-partners—together called a “dyad.” Clinically elevated emotional distress (ie, depression and anxiety symptoms) is common for both dyad members after ADRD diagnosis, which can become chronic and negatively impact relationship functioning, health, quality of life, and collaborative management of progressive symptoms. ObjectiveThis study is part of a larger study that aims to develop, adapt, and establish the feasibility of Resilient Together for Alzheimer Disease and Related Dementias (RT-ADRD), a novel dyadic skills-based intervention aimed at preventing chronic emotional distress. This study aims to gather comprehensive information to develop the first iteration of RT-ADRD and inform a subsequent open pilot. Here, we describe the proposed study design and procedures. MethodsAll procedures will be conducted virtually (via phone and Zoom) to minimize participant burden and gather information regarding feasibility and best practices surrounding virtual procedures for older adults. We will recruit dyads (up to n=20) from Mount Sinai Hospital (MSH) clinics within 1 month of ADRD diagnosis. Dyads will be self-referred or referred by their treating neurologists and complete screening to assess emotional distress and capacity to consent to participate in the study. Consenting dyads will then participate in a 60-minute qualitative interview using an interview guide designed to assess common challenges, unmet needs, and support preferences and to gather feedback on the proposed RT-ADRD intervention content and design. Each dyad member will then have the opportunity to participate in an optional individual interview to gather additional feedback. Finally, each dyad member will complete a brief quantitative survey remotely (by phone, tablet, or computer) via a secure platform to assess feasibility of assessment and gather preliminary data to explore associations between proposed mechanisms of change and secondary outcomes. We will conduct preliminary explorations of feasibility markers, including recruitment, screening, live video interviews, quantitative data collection, and mixed methods analyses. ResultsThis study has been approved by the MSH Institutional Review Board. We anticipate that the study will be completed by late 2023. ConclusionsWe will use results from this study to develop the first live video telehealth dyadic resiliency intervention focused on the prevention of chronic emotional distress in couples shortly after ADRD diagnoses. Our study will allow us to gather comprehensive information from dyads on important factors to address in an early prevention-focused intervention and to explore feasibility of study procedures to inform future open pilot and pilot feasibility randomized control trial investigations of RT-ADRD. ObjectiveThe aim of this study was to investigate phosphorylated tau (p-tau181) protein in plasma in a cohort of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) patients and a cohort of concussed athletes.MethodsThis pilot study comprised two independent cohorts. The first cohort—part of a Traumatic Head Injury Neuroimaging Classification (THINC) study—with a mean age of 46 years was composed of uninjured controls (UIC, n = 30) and mTBI patients (n = 288) recruited from the emergency department with clinical computed tomography (CT) and research magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings. The second cohort—with a mean age of 19 years—comprised 133 collegiate athletes with (n = 112) and without (n = 21) concussions. The participants enrolled in the second cohort were a part of a multicenter, prospective, case-control study conducted by the NCAA-DoD Concussion Assessment, Research and Education (CARE) Consortium at six CARE Advanced Research Core (ARC) sites between 2015 and 2019. Blood was collected within 48 h of injury for both cohorts. Plasma concentration (pg/ml) of p-tau181 was measured using the Single Molecule Array ultrasensitive assay.ResultsConcentrations of plasma p-tau181 in both cohorts were significantly elevated compared to controls within 48 h of injury, with the highest concentrations of p-tau181 within 18 h of injury, with an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.690–0.748, respectively, in distinguishing mTBI patients and concussed athletes from controls. Among the mTBI patients, the levels of plasma p-tau181 were significantly higher in patients with positive neuroimaging (either CT+/MRI+, n = 74 or CT−/MRI+, n = 89) compared to mTBI patients with negative neuroimaging (CT−/MRI−, n = 111) findings and UIC (P-values < 0.05).ConclusionThese findings indicate that plasma p-tau181 concentrations likely relate to brain injury, with the highest levels in patients with neuroimaging evidence of injury. Future research is needed to replicate and validate this protein assay's performance as a possible early diagnostic biomarker for mTBI/concussions.

BackgroundAlzheimer disease and related dementias (ADRD) are increasingly common conditions that disrupt the lives of persons living with dementia and their spousal care partners. At the time of ADRD diagnoses, many couples experience challenges that produce emotional distress and relationship strain. At present, there are no interventions to address these challenges early after diagnoses to promote positive adjustment. ObjectiveThe study protocol described here is part of the first phase of a larger program of research that aims to develop, adapt, and establish the feasibility of Resilient Together for Dementia (RT-ADRD), a novel dyadic skills-based intervention to be delivered over live video early after diagnosis, with the goal of preventing chronic emotional distress. This study will elicit and systematically summarize perspectives of ADRD medical stakeholders to inform the procedures (eg, recruitment and screening methods, eligibility, timing of intervention, and intervention delivery) of the first iteration of RT-ADRD prior to pilot-testing. MethodsWe will recruit interdisciplinary medical stakeholders (eg, neurologists, social workers, neuropsychologists, care coordinators, and speech language pathologists) from academic medical center clinics in the departments treating persons living with dementia such as neurology, psychiatry, and geriatric medicine via flyers and word-of-mouth referrals from clinic directors and members of relevant organizations (eg, dementia care collaboratives and Alzheimer disease research centers). The participants will complete electronic screening and consent procedures. Consenting individuals will then participate in a 30- to 60-minute qualitative virtual focus group, held either via telephone or Zoom, using an interview guide designed to assess provider experiences with postdiagnosis clinical care and to gather feedback on the proposed RT-ADRD protocol. The participants will also have the opportunity to participate in an optional exit interview and web-based survey to gather additional feedback. Qualitative data will be analyzed using a hybrid inductive-deductive approach and the framework method for thematic synthesis. We will conduct approximately 6 focus groups with 4-6 individuals in each group (maximum N=30 individuals; until saturation is reached). ResultsData collection began in November 2022 and will continue through June 2023. We anticipate that the study will be completed by late 2023. ConclusionsThe results from this study will inform the procedures of the first live video RT-ADRD dyadic resiliency intervention focused on the prevention of chronic emotional and relational distress in couples shortly after ADRD diagnoses. Our study will allow us to gather comprehensive information from stakeholders on ways to best deliver our early prevention–focused intervention and gain detailed feedback on study procedures prior to further testing. Abstract We review the concepts of legitimacy, trust, and legal cynicism in the context the debate about police legitimacy, discuss the extent to which these concepts relate to each other, and offer some early, speculative thoughts on a how relational model of legitimacy can extend beyond procedural justice concerns. Relying upon procedural justice theory, we emphasise the distinction between police legitimacy and legitimation: popular legitimacy is defined as public beliefs that legal authority has the right to rule (people acknowledge the moral appropriateness of legal authority) and the authority to govern (people recognise legal authority as the rightful authority), whereas legitimation is related to the criteria people use to judge the normative appropriateness of legal agents’ exercise of power (e.g., the extent to which police officers are trustworthy to behave in accordance with people’s normative expectations). Building on studies on legal cynicism and legal socialisation, we consider how other aspects of police conduct can send negative relational messages about people’s value within society and undermine their judgements about the legitimacy of legal authority - messages of oppression, marginalisation, and neglect over the life course. We conclude suggesting avenues for future research on public-police relations.

War is the most destructive of human conditions and can often sweep away the very essence of community and liberty. In this environment of chaos and destruction the most barbaric of crimes can be committed, driven by extremism and political interests. The wars of the 20th century have produced some of the worst abuses of power, with organized and systematic murder of many millions under the guise of protecting ethnic nationalism and liberty. It is both during and in the aftermath of war that investigators are tasked to examine the worst of these events, correlating evidence and preparing a case for court. The investigation into those at the “trigger level” can be influenced by a series of cultural, social, and political interruptions, which provides little in the way of a voice to the victims of such violence. The paper examines these factors and the difficulty of investigating such complex behaviors and bringing those responsible to justice.

The use of force by the state through its security services has been the topic of much debate, especially in recent years after the Black Lives Matter movement highlighted and protested against the treatment of black people by police officers. The state's use of force through the police and through military campaigns is closely examined and assessed in relation to both the treatment of ethnic minorities in the UK, and to the treatment of civilians by the US–UK coalition in the Middle East as part of the War on Terror. The violation of human rights, despite the principles, rules and laws already in place to protect them, is explored by examining the use of the prone position at home, and the tactic of airstrikes, the use of prohibited weapons and the treatment of detainees by UK forces abroad.

Abstract Worry about COVID-19 is a central topic of research into the social and economic consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic. In this paper, we present a new way of measuring worry about catching COVID-19 that distinguishes between worry as a negative experience that damages people’s quality of life (dysfunctional) and worry as an adaptive experience that directs people’s attention to potential problems (functional). Drawing on work into fear of crime, our classification divides people into three groups: (1) the unworried, (2) the functionally worried (where worry motivates proactive behaviours that help people to manage their sense of risk) and (3) the dysfunctionally worried (where quality of life is damaged by worry and/or precautionary behaviour). Analysing data from two waves of a longitudinal panel study of over 1000 individuals living in ten cities in England, Scotland and Wales, we find differing levels of negative anxiety, anger, loneliness, unhappiness and life satisfaction for each of the three groups, with the dysfunctionally worried experiencing the most negative outcomes and the functionally worried experiencing less negative outcomes than unworried. We find no difference between groups in compliance and willingness to re-engage in social life. Finally, we show a difference between the dysfunctionally worried compared with functional and unworried groups in perceptions of risk (differentiating between likelihood, control and consequence). This finding informs what sort of content-targeted messaging aimed at reducing dysfunctional worry might wish to promote. We conclude with some thoughts on the applicability of our measurement scheme for future research.

This study aims to explore the psychosocial factors and challenges affecting the lives of those who wear an ocular prosthesis following a traumatic eye injury. Thematic analysis of semi-structured interviews with eight individuals resulted in five themes: emotional devastation in the aftermath; moving forward; fear of negative social evaluation; keeping it normal - protecting self and close others; and threat of injury & blindness. Enucleation or evisceration of an eye causes significant emotional stress. Despite successful prosthetic restoration, many individuals continue to experience ongoing psychosocial challenges, as a consequence of their experiences of visible difference and visual impairment.

This paper examines the use of technology in warfare, from the Great War, with its use of artillery, to the War on Terror, with its breakthrough in air and drone power. The use of drones, due to their alleged precision, was meant to be ethical and legal. Strategic bombardment, it was claimed, could win wars. It would also cement the American claim of superiority, hegemony, and power in the war against terrorism. We ask if superior technology can guarantee victory and what that victory would look like, or whether its use can result in such human loss that a military victory becomes unconscionable. After the failure of technology to protect life in the 20th century, what has been achieved in the 21st century War on Terror? What constitutes a triumph and to what extent is that triumph a myth?

Background: Multi-tracer PET/SPECT imaging enables different modality tracers to be present simultaneously, allowing multiple physiological processes to be imaged in the same subject, within a short time-frame. Fluorine-18 and technetium-99m, two commonly used PET and SPECT radionuclides, respectively, possess different emission profiles, offering the potential for imaging one in the presence of the other. However, the impact of the presence of each radionuclide on scanning the other could be significant and lead to confounding results. Here we use combinations of 18F and 99mTc to explore the challenges posed by dual tracer PET/SPECT imaging, and investigate potential practical ways to overcome them.Methods: Mixed-radionuclide 18F/99mTc phantom PET and SPECT imaging experiments were carried out to determine the crossover effects of each radionuclide on the scans using Mediso nanoScan PET/CT and SPECT/CT small animal scanners.Results: PET scan image quality and quantification were adversely affected by 99mTc activities higher than 100 MBq due to a high singles rate increasing dead-time of the detectors. Below 100 MBq 99mTc, PET scanner quantification accuracy was preserved. SPECT scan image quality and quantification were adversely affected by the presence of 18F due to Compton scattering of 511 keV photons leading to over-estimation of 99mTc activity and increased noise. However, 99mTc:18F activity ratios of > 70:1 were found to mitigate this effect completely on the SPECT. A method for correcting for Compton scatter was also explored.Conclusion: Suitable combinations of injection sequence and imaging sequence can be devised to meet specific experimental multi-tracer imaging needs, with only minor or insignificant effects of each radionuclide on the scan of the other.

While investigating a signal of adaptive evolution in humans at the gene LARGE, we encountered an intriguing finding by Dr. Stefan Kunz that the gene plays a critical role in Lassa virus binding and entry. This led us to pursue field work to test our hypothesis that natural selection acting on LARGE—detected in the Yoruba population of Nigeria—conferred resistance to Lassa Fever in some West African populations. As we delved further, we conjectured that the “emerging” nature of recently discovered diseases like Lassa fever is related to a newfound capacity for detection, rather than a novel viral presence, and that humans have in fact been exposed to the viruses that cause such diseases for much longer than previously suspected. Dr. Stefan Kunz’s critical efforts not only laid the groundwork for this discovery, but also inspired and catalyzed a series of events that birthed Sentinel, an ambitious and large-scale pandemic prevention effort in West Africa. Sentinel aims to detect and characterize deadly pathogens before they spread across the globe, through implementation of its three fundamental pillars: Detect, Connect, and Empower. More specifically, Sentinel is designed to detect known and novel infections rapidly, connect and share information in real time to identify emerging threats, and empower the public health community to improve pandemic preparedness and response anywhere in the world. We are proud to dedicate this work to Stefan Kunz, and eagerly invite new collaborators, experts, and others to join us in our efforts.

Calling upon and assisting police officers are acts that link informal and formal mechanisms of social control. In this paper, we draw upon data from a survey of seven London electoral wards to investigate some of the factors predicting public willingness to assist police. We find that such cooperation is associated, first, with high levels of public trust in police; second, with confidence that local residents will intervene on behalf of the collective good; and third, with heightened concerns about disorder and the loss of authority and discipline in society. We conclude with the idea that cooperation may be influenced not only by peoples’ relationships with police, but also by their (real and imagined) relationships with each other. Notably, police may garner public cooperation when social cohesion is perceived to be high and when there seem to be challenges to the established moral order.

The FMR1 premutation is of increasing interest to the FXS community, as questions about a primary premutation phenotype warrant research attention. 100 FMR1 premutation carrier mothers (mean age = 58; 67–138 CGG repeats) of adults with fragile X syndrome were studied with respect to their physical and mental health, motor, and neurocognitive characteristics. We explored the correlates of CGG repeat mosaicism in women with expanded alleles. Mothers provided buccal swabs from which DNA was extracted and the FMR1 CGG genotyping was performed (Amplidex Kit, Asuragen). Mothers were categorized into three groups: Group 1: premutation non-mosaic (n = 45); Group 2: premutation mosaic (n = 41), and Group 3: premutation/full mutation mosaic (n = 14). Group 2 mothers had at least two populations of cells with different allele sizes in the premutation range besides their major expanded allele. Group 3 mothers had a very small population of cells in the full mutation range (>200 CGGs) in addition to one or multiple populations of cells with different allele sizes in the premutation range. Machine learning (random forest) was used to identify symptoms and conditions that correctly classified mothers with respect to mosaicism; follow-up comparisons were made to characterize the three groups. In categorizing mosaicism, the random forest yielded significantly better classification than random classification, with overall area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) of 0.737. Among the most important symptoms and conditions that contributed to the classification were anxiety, menopause symptoms, executive functioning limitations, and difficulty walking several blocks, with the women who had full mutation mosaicism (Group 3) unexpectedly having better health. Although only 14 premutation carrier mothers in the present sample also had a small population of full mutation cells, their profile of comparatively better health, mental health, and executive functioning was unexpected. This preliminary finding should prompt additional research on larger numbers of participants with more extensive phenotyping to confirm the clinical correlates of low-level full mutation mosaicism in premutation carriers and to probe possible mechanisms.

We examine international public opinion towards stem-cell research during the period when the issue was at its most contentious. We draw upon representative sample surveys in Europe and North America, fielded in 2005 and find that the majority of people in Europe, Canada and the United States supported stem-cell research, providing it was tightly regulated, but that there were key differences between the geographical regions in the relative importance of different types of ethical position. In the U.S., moral acceptability was more influential as a driver of support for stem-cell research; in Europe the perceived benefit to society carried more weight; and in Canada the two were almost equally important. We also find that public opinion on stem-cell research was more strongly associated with religious convictions in the U.S. than in Canada and Europe, although many strongly religious citizens in all regions approved of stem-cell research. We conclude that if anything public opinion or 'public ethics' are likely to play an increasingly important role in framing policy and regulatory regimes for sensitive technologies in the future.

AIM:To develop a short, enhanced functional ability Quality of Vision (faVIQ) instrument based on previous questionnaires employing comprehensive modern statistical techniques to ensure the use of an appropriate response scale, items and scoring of the visual related difficulties experienced by patients with visual impairment.METHODS:Items in current quality-of-life questionnaires for the visually impaired were refined by a multi-professional group and visually impaired focus groups. The resulting 76 items were completed by 293 visually impaired patients with stable vision on two occasions separated by a month. The faVIQ scores of 75 patients with no ocular pathology were compared to 75 age and gender matched patients with visual impairment.RESULTS:Rasch analysis reduced the faVIQ items to 27. Correlation to standard visual metrics was moderate (r=0.32-0.46) and to the NEI-VFQ was 0.48. The faVIQ was able to clearly discriminate between age and gender matched populations with no ocular pathology and visual impairment with an index of 0.983 and 95% sensitivity and 95% specificity using a cut off of 29.CONCLUSION:The faVIQ allows sensitive assessment of quality-of-life in the visually impaired and should support studies which evaluate the effectiveness of low vision rehabilitation services.

This paper examines new measures of fear of crime fielded in the European Social Survey. We use an analytical approach that combines statistical latent class modelling with pragmatic choices for the final classification of the responses into a six-category measure. We undertake an informal examination of the latent class solution in individual countries, and we show that frequency and impact indicators are reliable cross-national indicators (with configural or construct validity) of the experience of negative emotions about crime in people’s lives. Our subsequent estimation of levels of worry in 23 European countries sheds important light on the psychological patterning of worry about crime across Europe.

Use of 'smart drugs' among UK students is described in frequent media reports as a rapidly increasing phenomenon. This article reports findings from the first large-scale survey of pharmacological cognitive enhancement (PCE) among students in the UK and Ireland. Conducted from February to September 2012, a survey of a convenience sample of 877 students measured PCE prevalence, attitudes, sources, purposes and ethics. Descriptive and logistic regression statistical methods were used to analyse the data. Lifetime prevalence of PCE using modafinil, methylphenidate or Adderall was under 10%, while past regular and current PCE users of these substances made up between 0.3%-4% of the survey population. A substantial majority of students was unaware of and/or uninterested in PCE; however about one third of students were interested in PCE. PCE users were more likely to be male, British and older students; predictors of PCE use included awareness of other students using PCEs, ADHD symptomatology, ethical concerns, and alcohol and cannabis use. The survey addresses the need for better evidence about PCE prevalence and practices among university students in the UK. We recommend PCE-related strategies for universities based on the survey findings.

This paper offers a theoretical treatise that bridges the social and the psychological in risk perception research. We first outline research into the psychology of risk. We then speculate on the idea that people develop a structured narrative to risk, which includes morality, trust, and the dense social meaning of a danger and its impact. From this vantage point, we are better placed to move from psychological analyses of risk perception to the sort of analysis of culture that Mary DOUGLAS provides.
