Abstract

AIM: To validate the ability of the Heidelberg Edge Perimeter (HEP) in detecting glaucomatous visual field (VF) defects compared to the Octopus Visual Field (OVF) Analyzer and to determine the test-retest repeatability of both modalities. METHODS: This prospective, cross-sectional study was conducted at Wills Eye Hospital, Philadelphia, PA. Glaucoma subjects and unaffected controls underwent VF testing using HEP standard automated perimetry (SAP) III 30-2 Adaptive Staircase Thresholding Algorithm (ASTA) FAST protocol and OVF G-TOP white-on-white strategy. Testing order was randomized. Pearson’s correlation coefficient was calculated for both mean deviation (MD) and pattern standard deviation/square root of loss of variance (PSD/sLV). Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were used to determine the diagnostic abilities of both modalities. Glaucoma subjects returned for repeat testing and intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) were calculated to assess test-retest repeatability. Abstract

To describe the characteristics and practice patterns of family physicians who regularly treat long-term care (LTC) residents in order to inform quality improvement strategies.Cross-sectional study involving a 2005 province-wide census of LTC residents' charts linked to additional health care administrative databases.All LTC homes in Ontario.Residents aged 66 years and older (n = 50375) and the family physicians (n = 1190) most responsible for their care.Distribution of LTC residents across family physicians, and physician demographic characteristics and practice patterns.The distribution of residents across physicians was highly skewed (median 27 residents, mean 42.5 residents). The care of 90.4% of residents was accounted for by 628 (52.8%) identified physicians. Family physicians practising in LTC facilities were more likely to be older (mean age 52.4 years vs 48.2 years, P.001) and male (82.4% vs 61.5%, P.001) than other family physicians. Urban physicians who provided care to LTC residents had bigger LTC practices than rural LTC physicians did (median 50 residents vs median 12 residents).About 600 family physicians are responsible for the regular care of more than 90% of LTC residents in Ontario and quality improvement efforts could be aimed at this relatively small group of physicians. Half of the urban physicians who practise in LTC homes are responsible for 50 or more LTC residents. This might represent a key part of their overall practice.

3. Development of ent-kaurene Oxidase-Based Conserved Intron Spanning Primers for Species Identification in the Genus Poa (Poaceae; Bluegrass)

Abstract

Interspecific hybridization has been attempted to combine the heat and drought of Poa arachnifera Torr. with the turf quality characteristics of several Poa species. Confirmation of an F1 hybrid through morphological analysis of vegetative and flowering characteristics is often time consuming and ambiguous. Ent-kaurene oxidase (KO) has been sequenced in rice, barley, and wheat. In rice, each of the five copies of KO gene has unique lengths for the first intron. Conserved intron spanning primers (CISP) can be used as a DNA marker to exploit variations of intron lengths that flank conserved gene sequences. In the present study, we developed CISP to sequence partial genomic fragments of the KO gene from seven Poa species. Through sequence analysis, species-specific primers were also developed to produce co-dominant markers that can be used to identify interspecific hybrids between Texas bluegrass and six other Poa species used in the present study.
