Efficient surface passivation of perovskite solar cells (PSC) using treatment with ammonium salts is demonstrated as an efficient method to enhance the device performance, owing to the affinity between the amine group and [PbI6]4− octahedron. However, due to their high solubility in polar solvents (DMF/DMSO), ammonium salts are more difficult to use in passivation of the interface between the electron transport layer and perovskite thin film in n‐i‐p structured PSCs. In this report, this work successfully links the amine group with a fullerene through a series of increasing carbon chain length, from two to twelve methylene units (FC‐X, X = 2, 6, 12), and then introduce the synthesized molecules as interface passivation layers into SnO2‐based planar n‐i‐p PSCs. Results show that the interface passivation effect is highly dependent on the side‐chain length, and the longer chain length amine‐functionalized fullerene is more beneficial for the device performance. A power conversion efficiency as high as 21.2% is achieved by using FC‐12. The surface energy, perovskite crystallite size and electron transfer capacity correlate with the linker chain length. This work develops an amine‐induced anchored crystallization of perovskite to unravel the mechanism of this passivation effect. As expected, enhanced device stability is also observed in the FC‐12 passivated PSCs.

Tunable crystal growth offering highly aligned perovskite crystallites with suppressed deep‐level defects is vital for efficient charge transport, which in turn significantly influences the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Herein, a “precursor to perovskite‐like template to perovskite” (PPP) growth strategy is developed, using either MAAc or GuaCl precursor to induce a sacrificial thermal–unstable perovskite‐like template for (FAPbI3)x(MAPbI3)y perovskite growth. The self‐sacrificed intermediate template induces the formation of highly aligned perovskite crystals with greatly enhanced film crystallinity and suppresses deep‐level defect formation. Furthermore, it is proved that MAAc or GuaCl completely evaporates during the high‐temperature annealing process. The reduction in defect densities and nonradiative recombination enhances both carrier lifetime and charge dynamics, yielding impressive PCEs of 22.3% and 22.8% with a high open‐circuit voltage (VOC) of 1.16 V and an incredible fill factor (FF) of 81.5% and 79.4% for MAAc‐ and GuaCl‐based devices, respectively. These results suggest that the formation of the thermal–unstable perovskite‐like sacrificial template is a promising strategy to restrain the deep‐level defects in perovskite films toward the attainment of highly efficient and stable large‐scale PSCs as well as other perovskite‐based electronics.

The morphology of organic semiconductors is critical to their function in optoelectronic devices and is particularly crucial in the donor-acceptor mixture that comprises the bulk heterojunction of organic solar cells. Here, energy landscapes can play integral roles in charge photogeneration, and recently have been shown to drive the accumulation of charge carriers away from the interface, resulting in the buildup of large nanoscale electric fields, much like a capacitor. In this work we combine morphological and spectroscopic data to outline the requirements for this interdomain charge accumulation, finding that this effect is driven by a three-phase morphology that creates an energetic cascade for charge carriers. By adjusting annealing conditions, we show that domain purity, but not size, is critical for an electro-absorption feature to grow-in. This demonstrates that the energy landscape around the interface shapes the movement of charges and that pure domains are required for charge carrier buildup that results in reduced recombination and large interdomain nanoscale electric fields.

Bulk-heterojunction nanoparticle dispersions in water or alcohol can be employed as eco-friendly inks for the fabrication of organic solar cells by printing or coating. However, one major drawback is the need for stabilizing surfactants, which facilitate nanoparticle formation but later hamper device performance. When surfactant-free dispersions are formulated, a strong limitation is imposed by the dispersion concentration due to the tendency of nanoparticles to aggregate. In this work, pyridine end-capped poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT-Py) is synthesized and included as an additive for the stabilization of P3HT:indene-C60 bis-adduct (ICBA) nanoparticle dispersions. In the presence of acetic acid (AcOH), a surface-active pyridinium acetate end-capped P3HT ion pair, P3HT-PyH+AcO-, is formed which effectively stabilizes the dispersion and hence allows the formation of dispersions with smaller nanoparticle sizes and higher concentrations of up to 30 mg/mL in methanol. The dispersions exhibit an enhanced shelf-lifetime of at least 60 days at room temperature. After the deposition of light-harvesting layers from the nanoparticle dispersions, the ion-pair formation is reversed at elevated temperatures leading to regeneration of P3HT-Py and AcOH. The AcOH evaporates from the active layer, while the performance of the corresponding solar cells is not affected by the residual P3HT-Py in the devices. Enhanced nanoparticle stability is achieved with only 0.017 wt % pyridine in the P3HT/ICBA formulation.

Developing photostable compounds that undergo quantitative singlet fission (SF) is a key challenge. As SF necessitates electron transfer between neighboring molecules, the SF rate is highly sensitive to intermolecular coupling in the solid state. We investigate SF in thin films for a series of perylenediimide (PDI) molecules. By adding different substituents at the imide positions, the packing of the molecules in the solid state can be changed. The relationship between SF parameters and the stacked geometry in PDI films is investigated, with two-electron direct coupling found to be the main SF mechanism. Time-resolved emission and transient absorption data show that all of the PDI films undergo SF although with different rates and yields varying from 35 to 200%. The results show that PDI1 and 2, which are stacked PDI pairs twisted out of alignment along the highest occupied molecular orbital to lowest unoccupied molecular orbital transition, exhibit faster and more efficient SF up to 200% yield. We demonstrate that both triplet formation and decay rates are highly sensitive to the ordering of the molecules within a film. The results of this study will assist in the design of optimized structures with a fast SF rate and low recombination rate that are required for useful light harvesting applications.

Organic photovoltaic (OPV) efficiencies continue to rise, raising their prospects for solar energy conversion. However, researchers have long considered how to suppress the loss of free carriers by recombination—poor diffusion and significant Coulombic attraction can cause electrons and holes to encounter each other at interfaces close to where they were photogenerated. Using femtosecond transient spectroscopies, we report the nanosecond grow-in of a large transient Stark effect, caused by nanoscale electric fields of ∼487 kV/cm between photogenerated free carriers in the device active layer. We find that particular morphologies of the active layer lead to an energetic cascade for charge carriers, suppressing pathways to recombination, which is ∼2000 times less than predicted by Langevin theory. This in turn leads to the buildup of electric charge in donor and acceptor domains—away from the interface—resistant to bimolecular recombination. Interestingly, this signal is only experimentally obvious in thick films due to the different scaling of electroabsorption and photoinduced absorption signals in transient absorption spectroscopy. Rather than inhibiting device performance, we show that devices up to 600 nm thick maintain efficiencies of >8% because domains can afford much higher carrier densities. These observations suggest that with particular nanoscale morphologies the bulk heterojunction can go beyond its established role in charge photogeneration and can act as a capacitor, where adjacent free charges are held away from the interface and can be protected from bimolecular recombination.

A conceptual study of iterative coupling (IC) is performed, providing a unified description and new research directions. IC chain growth rates and functional group choice are analyzed, guiding construction of efficient schemes. The concept of cycle efficiency is defined as a more complete metric of experimental implementations of IC, and then applied to the main linear and exponential IC processes. The mathematical relations between individual reactions, cycles, and the iterative process as a whole are studied. Finally, macromolecule IC is proposed as a strikingly complementary process to standard IC, with potential to reduce the dispersity of non‐uniform samples. Due to its connection with the central limit theorem of statistics, it provides an unusually robust, powerful, and general method for scalable production of polymer samples with narrow distribution. In all, this contribution assists development of improved IC processes targeting low dispersity linear oligomers and polymers.

Vertically aligning fluorophores to the surface of a waveguide is known to be an effective approach to improve the optical quantum efficiency (OQE) of luminescent solar concentrators (LSCs). While the chromophore alignment assists waveguiding of the emitted photons to the LSC edges, it also significantly reduces the light-harvesting properties of the LSC. We report here a fluorophore pair consisting of a sphere-shaped energy donor and a rod-shaped emitter that was incorporated in LSCs to provide selective fluorophore alignment to address the reduced incident-light absorption issue. A liquid-crystal polymer matrix was used to perpendicularly align the rod-shaped acceptors to a favorable orientation for light guiding, while the sphere-shaped donor was randomly oriented to maintain its light-absorbing properties. The OQE of LSC devices with this selectively aligned donor-acceptor fluorophore system is 78% without significant loss of light-harvesting capability.

Solution and solution‐deposited thin films of the discotic liquid crystalline electron acceptor–donor–acceptor (A‐D‐A) p‐type organic semiconductor FHBC(TDPP)2, synthesized by coupling thienyl substituted diketopyrrolopyrrole (TDPP) onto a fluorenyl substituted hexa‐peri‐hexabenzocoronene (FHBC) core, are examined by ultrafast and nanosecond transient absorption spectroscopy, and time‐resolved photoluminescence studies to examine their ability to support singlet fission (SF). Grazing incidence wide‐angle X‐ray (GIWAX) studies indicate that as‐cast thin films of FHBC(TDPP)2 are “amorphous,” while hexagonal packed discotic liquid crystalline films evolve during thermal annealing. SF in as‐cast thin films is observed with an ≈150% triplet generation yield. Thermally annealing the thin films improves SF yields up to 170%. The as‐cast thin films show no long‐range order, indicating a new class of SF material where the requirement for local order and strong near neighbor coupling has been removed. Generation of long‐lived triplets (µs) suggests that these materials may also be suitable for inclusion in organic solar cells to enhance performance.

The light-harvesting efficiency of luminescent solar concentrators (LSCs) is encumbered by reabsorption of emission and concentration quenching. Energy transfer from a high-concentration donor to a low-concentration energy trap can reduce reabsorption losses while maintaining efficient light collection. Emissive aggregates enable this approach by reducing the impact of concentration quenching, which is detrimental to the entire energy transfer process. Here we describe a LSC that utilizes emissive aggregates as energy-transfer pairs for downconversion. We characterize the photophysics of a benzothiadiazole-based emissive aggregate, PITBT-TPE, that complements a highly emissive donor, DPATPAN, and functions as a highly emissive energy-transfer acceptor even at high concentrations in excess of 180 mM in the PMMA matrix. Monte Carlo simulations of LSCs that leverage these emissive aggregates as energy-transfer pairs predicted notable optical efficiencies at large concentrator dimensions. We demonstrate for the first time a LSC that utilizes donor and acceptor AIE chromophores to reduce reabsorption.

The exploitation of singlet fission (SF) materials in optoelectronic devices is restricted by the limited number of SF materials available and developing new organic materials that undergo singlet fission is a significant challenge. Using a new strategy based on conjugating strong donor and acceptor building blocks, the small molecule (BDT(DPP)2) and polymer (p‐BDT‐DPP) systems are designed and synthesized knowing that bisthiophene‐2,5‐dihydropyrrolo[3,4‐c]pyrrole‐1,4‐dione (DPP) has a low lying triplet energy level, which is further confirmed by time‐dependent density functional theory (TD‐DFT) calculations. TD‐DFT and natural transition orbital (NTO) analysis are conducted to gain insight into the photophysical properties and features of excited states in BDT(DPP)2, respectively. Femtosecond and nanosecond transient absorption spectroscopies are used to investigate the excited state kinetics in the synthesized compounds. Fast formation of triplet pairs in thin film of p‐BDT‐DPP and BDT(DPP)2 and the equilibrium formation of correlated triplet pairs and S1 from triplet–triplet annihilation in solution of BDT(DPP)2 are further evidence of SF in these compounds. The short triplet lifetime, as a result of fast biexcitonic recombination, provides additional support for triplet pair formation through singlet fission.

Achieving efficient bulk‐heterojunction (BHJ) solar cells from blends of solution‐processable small‐molecule (SM) donors and acceptors is proved particularly challenging due to the complexity in obtaining a favorable donor–acceptor morphology. In this report, the BHJ device performance pattern of a set of analogous, well‐defined SM donors—DR3TBDTT (DR3), SMPV1, and BTR—used in conjunction with the SM acceptor IDTTBM is examined. Examinations show that the nonfullerene “All‐SM” BHJ solar cells made with DR3 and IDTTBM can achieve power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of up to ≈4.5% (avg. 4.0%) when the solution‐processing additive 1,8‐diiodooctane (DIO, 0.8% v/v) is used in the blend solutions. The figures of merit of optimized DR3:IDTTBM solar cells contrast with those of “as‐cast” BHJ devices from which only modest PCEs <1% can be achieved. Combining electron energy loss spectrum analyses in scanning transmission electron microscopy mode, carrier transport measurements via “metal‐insulator‐semiconductor carrier extraction” methods, and systematic recombination examinations by light‐dependence and transient photocurrent analyses, it is shown that DIO plays a determining role—establishing a favorable lengthscale for the phase‐separated SM donor–acceptor network and, in turn, improving the balance in hole/electron mobilities and the carrier collection efficiencies overall.

Synthesis of fluorene‐based conjugated polyelectrolytes was achieved via Suzuki polycondensation in water and completely open to air. The polyelectrolytes were conveniently purified by dialysis and analysis of the materials showed properties expected for fluorene‐based conjugated polyelectrolytes. The materials were then employed in solar cell devices as an interlayer in conjunction with ZnO. The double interlayer led to enhanced power conversion efficiency of 10.75 % and 15.1 % for polymer and perovskite solar cells, respectively.

Luminescent solar concentrators (LSCs) are light harvesting devices that are ideally suited to light collection in the urban environment where direct sunlight is often not available. LSCs consist of highly luminescent compounds embedded or coated on a transparent substrate that absorb diffuse or direct solar radiation over a large area. The resulting luminescence is trapped in the waveguide by total internal reflection to the thin edges of the substrate where the concentrated light can be used to improve the performance of photovoltaic devices. The concept of LSCs has been around for several decades, and yet the efficiencies of current devices are still below expectations for commercial viability. There are two primary challenges when designing new chromophores for LSC applications. Reabsorption of dye emission by chromophores within the waveguide is a significant loss mechanism attenuating the light output of LSCs. Concentration quenching, particularly in organic dye systems, restricts the quantity of chromophores that can be incorporated in the waveguide thus limiting the light absorbed by the LSC. Frequently, a compromise between increased light harvesting of the incident light and decreasing emission quantum yield is required for most organic chromophore-based systems due to concentration quenching. The low Stokes shift of common organic dyes used in current LSCs also imposes another optimization problem. Increasing light absorption of LSCs based on organic dyes to achieve efficient light harvesting also enhances reabsorption. Ideally, a design strategy to simultaneously optimize light harvesting, concentration quenching, and reabsorption of LSC chromophores is clearly needed to address the significant losses in LSCs. Over the past few years, research in our group has targeted novel dye structures that address these primary challenges. There is a common perception that dye aggregates are to be avoided in LSCs. Following an initial work on the isolation of a single geometric isomer from an indene-C70 bisadduct (IC70BA) mixture, we report the full fractionation and identification of the bisadduct species in the material. Eleven fractions of IC70BA isomers were separated by high-performance liquid chromatography. A number of fractions contained relatively pure isomer species and their configuration were deduced using a variety of analytical techniques including (1)H and (13)C NMR and UV-vis spectroscopy. The electrochemical properties and the organic solar cell device performance were investigated for fractions where a reasonable quantity of sample could be isolated.

Bimolecular recombination in bulk heterojunction organic solar cells is the process by which nongeminate photogenerated free carriers encounter each other, and combine to form a charge transfer (CT) state which subsequently relaxes to the ground state. It is governed by the diffusion of the slower and faster carriers toward the electron donor–acceptor interface. In an increasing number of systems, the recombination rate constant is measured to be lower than that predicted by Langevin's model for relative Brownian motion and the capture of opposite charges. This study investigates the dynamics of charge generation, transport, and recombination in a nematic liquid crystalline donor:fullerene acceptor system that gives solar cells with initial power conversion efficiencies of >9.5%. Unusually, and advantageously from a manufacturing perspective, these efficiencies are maintained in junctions thicker than 300 nm. Despite finding imbalanced and moderate carrier mobilities in this blend, strongly suppressed bimolecular recombination is observed, which is ≈150 times less than predicted by Langevin theory, or indeed, more recent and advanced models that take into account the domain size and the spatial separation of electrons and holes. The suppressed bimolecular recombination arises from the fact that ground‐state decay of the CT state is significantly slower than dissociation.

Well‐defined semiconducting bottlebrush polymers are prepared using controlled polymerization methods. The electron donor semiconductor poly(3‐hexylthiophene), P3HT, is synthesized using Grignard metathesis polymerization. With appropriate norbornene end caps, the P3HT macromonomers are used to form the bottlebrush material via ring opening metathesis polymerization. The bottlebrush polymers are characterized and compared with linear P3HT materials, as well as high‐molecular‐weight commercial P3HT. It is found that longer polythiophene chains impart better semiconducting properties resulting in higher solar‐cell device performance. image

A single isomer of fullerene bisadduct, PC61PF, was obtained from commercially available fullerene derivative, PC61BM, in one pot over two steps. The tether-directed remote functionalization approach provided a very simple and fast method to produce a single isomer of fullerene bisadduct with good yield and easy purification. Bulk heterojunction organic solar cells containing the bisadduct was fabricated and tested.

A high molecular weight donor-acceptor conjugated polymer is synthesized using the Suzuki polycondensation method. Using this polymer, a single-junction bulk-heterojunction solar cell is fabricated giving a power conversion efficiency of 9.4% using a fullerene-modified ZnO interlayer at the cathode contact.

The regioselective synthesis of fullerene multiadducts was achieved from commercially available reagents in one pot over two steps. The configuration of the isolated regioisomers was determined using various NMR methods, UV-vis spectroscopy and electrochemical analysis with the structure of one isomer confirmed by single crystal X-ray analysis. Interesting variation in regioselectivity was observed when different amino acid reagents were used in the reactions. Theoretical calculations and additional experiments, such as deuterium exchange, led to a proposed mechanism for the regioselective product formation.

This account describes the work of our group in the area of organic photovoltaics in the past six years. The emphasis is on our experiences in the development of the organic materials, their characterization, scale-up and application in devices. We share our insight into the relationship between synthetic methods, molecular properties, bulk material properties and device performance.

Solution-processed organic photovoltaic cells (OPVs) hold great promise to enable roll-to-roll printing of environmentally friendly, mechanically flexible and cost-effective photovoltaic devices. Nevertheless, many high-performing systems show best power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) with a thin active layer (thickness is ~100 nm) that is difficult to translate to roll-to-roll processing with high reproducibility. Here we report a new molecular donor, benzodithiophene terthiophene rhodanine (BTR), which exhibits good processability, nematic liquid crystalline behaviour and excellent optoelectronic properties. A maximum PCE of 9.3% is achieved under AM 1.5G solar irradiation, with fill factor reaching 77%, rarely achieved in solution-processed OPVs. Particularly promising is the fact that BTR-based devices with active layer thicknesses up to 400 nm can still afford high fill factor of ~70% and high PCE of ~8%. Together, the results suggest, with better device architectures for longer device lifetime, BTR is an ideal candidate for mass production of OPVs.

This study investigates novel deposition techniques for the preparation of TiO2 electrodes for use in flexible dye-sensitized solar cells. These proposed new methods, namely pre-dye-coating and codeposition ultrasonic spraying, eliminate the conventional need for time-consuming processes such as dye soaking and high-temperature sintering. Power conversion efficiencies of over 4.0% were achieved with electrodes prepared on flexible polymer substrates using this new deposition technology and N719 dye as a sensitizer.

The results of a study on the effects of encapsulant pre-conditioning (drying) on the durability of "conventional" and "inverted" bulk-heterojunction organic solar cells based on P3HT:PCBM are presented. The architectures of the conventional and inverted devices were ITO/PEDOT:PSS/P3HT: PCBM/Al and ITO/ZnO/P3HT:PCBM/MoO3/Ag, respectively. Quantitative analysis of the moisture content, moisture out-gassing, and re-absorbing properties of flexible barrier encapsulant films under ambient conditions was conducted. The effect of moisture out-gassing from the encapsulation materials on device performance was studied and the lifetime of conventional and inverted devices was found to decline significantly for the devices encapsulated using materials without pre-conditioning. This study reveals the essential role of pre-conditioning of materials in the encapsulation of organic photovoltaic devices. Current-voltage characteristics exhibit a clear increase in the series resistance of the devices during storage under ambient conditions, and Spectroscopic Impedance analysis indicates that charge-transport resistance within the devices increases significantly during the degradation process. The results are consistent with the primary degradation mechanism being corrosion at the metal-electrode surface.
