21. Special Educator Self-Efficacy: The Impact of Training and Experience

Abstract

In California, the longstanding insufficiency of special educators has compounded since the 2013-2014 academic year. Districts and state legislators have relied on the issuance of substandard permits (i.e., Provisional Intern Permits, Short-Term Staff Permits, and Intern Credentials) to counteract the shortage. However, the effectiveness of this approach has limited evaluation. This study evaluated differences between pre-service and in-service special educators' self-efficacy ratings. Special educators serving in California's Central Valley on substandard permits or valid teaching credentials (i.e., Preliminary and Clear Credentials) completed the Teachers' Sense of Efficacy Scale. Differences were assessed across several variables using independent t-tests and one-way ANOVAs. Significant differences emerged in special educators' self-reported levels of self-efficacy as a function of credential status, favoring those with valid credentials. The findings indicate a correlation between special educators' credential status (a proxy for training) and self-reported self-efficacy. The results of this study add to the research on special educators' self-efficacy by exploring the phenomenon among a newly emerged group of California-based special educators: substandard permit holders.

Abstract

In this work, the Common Model of Multi-phase Strength and Equation of State (CMMP) model was applied to tin. Specifically, calibrations of the strength-specific elements of the CMMP foundation were developed with a combination of experiments and theory, and then the model was validated experimentally. The first element of the foundation is a multi-phase analytic treatment of the melt temperature and the shear modulus for the solid phases. These models were parameterized for each phase based on ab initio calculations using the software VASP (Vienna Ab initio Simulations Package) based on density functional theory. The shear modulus model for the ambient β phase was validated with ultrasonic sound speed measurements as a function of pressure and temperature. The second element of the foundation is a viscoplastic strength model for the β phase, upon which strength for inaccessible higher-pressure phases can be scaled as necessary. The stress–strain response of tin was measured at strain rates of 10 − 3 to 3 × 10 3 s − 1 and temperatures ranging from 87 to 373 K. The Preston–Tonks–Wallace (PTW) strength model was fit to that data using Bayesian model calibration. For validation, six forward and two reverse Taylor impact experiments were performed at different velocities to measure large plastic deformation of tin at strain rates up to 10 5 s − 1 . The PTW model accurately predicted the deformed shapes of the cylinders, with modest discrepancies attributed to the inability of PTW to capture the effects of twinning and dynamic recrystallization. Some material in the simulations of higher velocity Taylor cylinders reached the melting temperature, thus testing the multiphase model because of the presence of a second phase, the liquid. In simulations using a traditional modeling approach, the abrupt reduction of strength upon melt resulted in poor predictions of the deformed shape and non-physical temperatures. With CMMP, the most deformed material points evolved gradually to a mixed solid–liquid but never a fully liquid state, never fully lost strength, stayed at the melt temperature as the latent heat of fusion was absorbed, and predicted the deformed shape well. 31. A Comparison of Success Trajectories among Nontraditional Students with Varying Abilities

Abstract

Graduate students with impairments achieve at lower rates than peers without impairments. A social model of disability perspective suggests that the disparity results from interactions between individual and situational traits rather than individual characteristics alone. This inquiry compared and contrasted experiences of overcoming academic disqualification among nontraditional post-baccalaureate participants with and without impairments. Comparisons occur within and across dyads: three participants with impairments were matched to participants without impairments and comparisons were made within their experiences and then across other dyads. Participants, regardless of impairments, wrestled with online learning and postponed assistance seeking, and relied on relationships as a source of support and learned to manage their time as a strategy for success. Those with learning needs used prescribed medication strategically and managed identity to avoid stigma or explore autonomy. The findings prioritize support for the agency of nontraditional graduate students for achieving degree completion.

42. Vietnamese Early Career Academics' Identity Work: Balancing Tensions between East and West

Abstract

Through a narrative analysis of 33 interviews with Vietnamese early career academics, we explore whether a Confucianist/collectivist academic context in Vietnam has a key influence on academics' identity work, within the embrace of encroaching managerialist practices. We show how these academics from 11 universities negotiated identity alignment and identity tensions between such cultural orientation and managerialism. On the one hand, a Confucianist ethic underpinning higher education in Vietnam is likely to encourage academics to engage in managerialist practices, as it promotes harmony and loyalty to their respective university and its global, 'excellence' goals. On the other hand, a cultural underpinning of collegiality can create tension with the individualist nature of managerialist practices. Our recommendations for universities in a similar context are to adapt the more individualistic performative approaches borrowed from the West by crafting their own collegiate, soft managerialist hybrid practices.

Under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, local education agencies or school districts are responsible to conduct child find activities within their agency or district boundaries. This responsibility entails collaborating with private school personnel on an annual basis. Through this qualitative study with a grounded theory approach, we explored the nature of interactions between public and private school personnel as they pertained to child find activities. This inquiry represents the first exploration of relationships between private and public schools within the context of child find activities.
