Circulation control is a viable active flow control approach that can be used to meet the NASA Subsonic Fixed Wing project s Cruise Efficient Short Take Off and Landing goals. Currently, circulation control systems are primarily designed using empirical methods. However, large uncertainty in our ability to predict circulation control performance has led to the development of advanced CFD methods. This paper provides an overview of a systematic approach to developing CFD tools for basic and advanced circulation control applications. This four-step approach includes "Unit", "Benchmar", "Subsystem", and "Complete System" experiments. The paper emphasizes the ongoing and planned 2-D and 3-D physics orientated experiments with corresponding CFD efforts. Sample data are used to highlight the challenges involved in conducting circulation control computations and experiments.

The investigation of the flow over a cylinder with a hemispherical nose at an angle of attack is presented. Experiments were conducted in a 6 ft x 6 ft low-turbulence tunnel. The focus of this research is the separated region as well as the evaluation and testing of a new diagnostic tool, a fiber-optic laser-Doppler probe. A two-fold contribution is offered. On one hand, pressure distributions are provided along a fine grid over the body. On the other hand, a feasibility study is presented on the use of a fiber-optic LDV probe which can obtain data from inside the model.

The NASA Langley Low Turbulence Pressure Tunnel has been used to conduct an experimental study of the flow around a series of circular cylinders; the models used consisted of a baseline, smooth cylinder together with a cylinder that could be reconfigured with six different arrangements of two types of surface irregularity. Mean lift and drag forces were measured on all seven model configurations, and correlations were made between unsteady pressure in the wake region and fluctuating lift forces, in order to identify coherent structures.

The design, fabrication, and validation of the Basic Aerodynamic Facility (BARF), developed for the direct comparison of three-dimensional laser velocimetry (LV) and hot-wire techniques at transonic speeds, are discussed. To accommodate the installation of the three-dimensional orthogonal LV system in the BARF, the transonic slots were redesigned to house windows, and the test section mounting was redesigned to facilitate LV transversing. Two-dimensional and three-dimensional code validation tests of the LV test section showed uniform mean flow through the test section to sonic speeds, and fluctuating pressure measurements at subsonic speeds which are consistent with facilities with good flow quality.

The experimental techniques employed by NASA researchers to obtain a high volume throughput of data in a study of high-lift multielement airfoils using a laser velocimeter (LV) are detailed. The two-dimensional LV system recorded mean velocity, turbulence intensities, Re shear stresses, skewness and kurtosis of the flow. A computer-controlled positioning mount for the LV allowed automated surveys of the flows with a 0.001 in. positioning accuracy. The flow was seeded with oil droplets and additional refinement of the wind tunnel controls permitted rapid speedup at selected areas of the flowfield over specific regions of the airfoil. Surface pressure taps furnished data for selecting regions for more detailed investigation. The data processing capabilities processed 30-40 samples every 10 min in an automated mode. Profiles of the data were computed automatically to furnish graphical displays on demand. Numerous samples of the data displays generated are provided.

An experimental low speed study of the separating confluent boundary layer on a NASA GAW-1 high lift airfoil is described. The airfoil was tested in a variety of high lift configurations comprised of leading edge slat and trailing edge flap combinations. The primary test instrumentation was a two dimensional laser velocimeter (LV) system operating in a backscatter mode. Surface pressures and corresponding LV derived boundary layer profiles are given in terms of velocity components, turbulence intensities and Reynolds shear stresses as characterizing confluent boundary layer behavior up to and beyond stall. LV derived profiles and associated boundary layer parameters and those obtained from more conventional instrumentation such as pitot static transverse, Preston tube measurements and hot-wire surveys are compared.

The boundary-layer equations for two-dimensional incompressible flow are integrated numerically for the flow over a flat plate and a Howarth body. Injection is introduced either impulsively or periodically along a narrow strip. Results indicate that injection perpendicular to the wall is transmitted instantly across the boundary layer and has little effect on the velocity profile parallel to the wall. The effect is a little more noticeable for flows with adverse pressure gradients. Injection parallel to the wall results in fuller velocity profiles. Parallel and oscillatory injection appears to influence the mean. The amplitude of oscillation decreases with distance from the injection strip but further downstream it increases again in a manner reminiscent of an unstable process.
