Comparative literature--Russian and German ,Collective memory and literature ,History, Modern - Abstract
This thesis compares the work of the Soviet-Jewish author Vasilii Grossman and the West German Nobel Laureate Heinrich Böll in the context of memory studies. It particularly analyses these authors' fictional representations of the Stalinist and National Socialist regimes, predominantly in texts written after 1945. In contrast to traditional approaches to the study of post-atrocity fiction that focus on depictions of victimhood and psychoanalytic notions of trauma, this project highlights the need to consider the ways that literature thematizes morally ambiguous experiences of historical violence that do not sit comfortably into categories of 'victim' and 'perpetrator'. To do so, the thesis critically draws on and develops two theoretical prisms through which to compare Grossman's and Böll's works. First, the concept of 'implication', which denotes ambiguous and indirect forms of involvement in structural violence (Rothberg 2019). Second, the notion of 'moral injury', which highlights the psychological consequences of committing, witnessing or failing to prevent an act that transgresses the individual's personal moral code (Litz et al. 2009; Pederson 2021). These lenses provide a transformational means of studying Grossman's and Böll's literary approaches by elucidating their underappreciated focus on reckoning with ambiguous types of association with historical violence. On the one hand, they highlight the authors' shared preference for multi-vocal narratives that emphasize the complexity of individual perspectives on the past. On the other hand, they show the writers' similar broader conceptualizations of memory, which cast remembrance of as an ever-evolving, critical task that begins with the individual. Overall, the analysis reveals not only fresh insights into Grossman's and Böll's works, but also new avenues for broader comparison between post-National Socialist German and post-Stalinist Russian literatures and for the study of memory literature across contexts.

16. A framework for combining model calibration with model-based optimization in virtual engineering design workflows

629.8 - Abstract
In recent years, the development of complex engineering products has seen a movement towards increasing levels of virtualisation using expensive black-box simulations. One of the main factors driving this trend is the rapid increase in available computational resources. As computational capabilities are further developed, projects which used to be infeasible are now possible. When using a virtual engineering design process, once the structure of the simulation model has been built, there is a need to perform both calibration and optimization in order to ensure that the resulting outputs presented to a decision maker correctly represent the optimal solutions. Both of these stages require the use of model evaluations to determine the efficacy of new parameterizations and designs. Such usage becomes a problem when there is only a limited budget of evaluations available within the design process for both stages. This problem is reinforced further by the current practice of considering the two stages as separate problems where there is only a limited transfer of knowledge between them, rather than a linked process. The question that is posed within this research is whether there would be any benefits to adopting a linked approach to the calibration and optimization of expensive multi-objective design problems. In order to determine an answer to this question, it is first essential to set out a mathematical formulation for the joint problem of calibration and optimisation. In order to assess any newly developed methods, it is necessary to devise a set of benchmark problems that contain both model parameters and control inputs that are required to be determined. This is achieved through the adaptation of pre-existing problems from the optimization literature as well as the development of a new component that fits within the Walking Fish Group (WFG) framework. A new alternating combined methodology is developed with the aim of gaining information within more relevant areas of the search space to improve the efficiency of the evaluations used. This new alternating method is further expanded to incorporate surrogates with the aim of improving knowledge sharing between the stages of model calibration and optimization. It is found that the use of the new alternating method can improve the final parameter sets obtained by the calibration, when compared to the classical approach. The extended alternating approach also offers superior calibration, in addition to achieving faster improvement in convergence of the optimiser to the true Pareto front of optimal designs.

The ubiquitous pollution of the environment with microplastics, a diverse suite of contaminants, is of growing concern for science and currently receives considerable public, political, and academic attention. The potential impact of microplastics in the environment has prompted a great deal of research in recent years. Many diverse methods have been developed to answer different questions about microplastic pollution, from sources, transport, and fate in the environment, and about effects on humans and wildlife. These methods are often insufficiently described, making studies neither comparable nor reproducible. The proliferation of new microplastic investigations and cross-study syntheses to answer larger scale questions are hampered. This diverse group of 23 researchers think these issues can begin to be overcome through the adoption of a set of reporting guidelines. This collaboration was created using an open science framework that we detail for future use. Here, we suggest harmonized reporting guidelines for microplastic studies in environmental and laboratory settings through all steps of a typical study, including best practices for reporting materials, quality assurance/quality control, data, field sampling, sample preparation, microplastic identification, microplastic categorization, microplastic quantification, and considerations for toxicology studies. We developed three easy to use documents, a detailed document, a checklist, and a mind map, that can be used to reference the reporting guidelines quickly. We intend that these reporting guidelines support the annotation, dissemination, interpretation, reviewing, and synthesis of microplastic research. Through open access licensing (CC BY 4.0), these documents aim to increase the validity, reproducibility, and comparability of studies in this field for the benefit of the global community.

- Abstract
The use of three-dimensional printing in chemistry education has expanded greatly in the past 10 years. The technique has been used to demonstrate a range of concepts including molecular structure, orbitals, and point groups; to produce chemical equipment such as cuvettes and columns; and even to print out mathematical shapes and functions. Here, 3D printing is used to create physical models of two-dimensional NMR spectra and HPLC chromatograms to facilitate student understanding of these challenging concepts. The target audience are undergraduate and postgraduate students as well as university teachers and researchers. Methods to create and print tangible models of the data are presented using the Mathematica and MATLAB programming environments. The models can then be used as useful teaching tools to assist with developing representational competence. The underlying data for the models may be created in-house or obtained from online databases. Instructions to convert the raw data to 3D printable files are provided, and the options for optimizing the resulting files are discussed. These innovative physical models allow students, particularly those who are visual and/or tactile learners, to better understand the complex information presented in multidimensional spectra and chromatograms and enhance student understanding of these forms of data.

- Abstract
BACKGROUND: Drp1 (dynamin-related protein 1), a large GTPase, mediates the increased mitochondrial fission, which contributes to hyperproliferation of pulmonary artery smooth muscle cells in pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). We developed a potent Drp1 GTPase inhibitor, Drpitor1a, but its specificity, pharmacokinetics, and efficacy in PAH are unknown. METHODS: Drpitor1a's ability to inhibit recombinant and endogenous Drp1 GTPase was assessed. Drpitor1a's effects on fission were studied in control and PAH human pulmonary artery smooth muscle cells (hPASMC) and blood outgrowth endothelial cells (BOEC). Cell proliferation and apoptosis were studied in hPASMC. Pharmacokinetics and tissue concentrations were measured following intravenous and oral drug administration. Drpitor1a's efficacy in regressing monocrotaline-PAH was assessed in rats. In a pilot study, Drpitor1a reduced PA remodeling only in females. Subsequently, we compared Drpitor1a to vehicles in control and monocrotaline-PAH females. RESULTS: Drp1 GTPase activity was increased in PAH hPASMC. Drpitor1a inhibited the GTPase activity of recombinant and endogenous Drp1 and reversed the increased fission, seen in PAH hPASMC and PAH BOEC. Drpitor1a inhibited proliferation and induced apoptosis in PAH hPASMC without affecting electron transport chain activity, respiration, fission/ fusion mediator expression, or mitochondrial Drp1 translocation. Drpitor1a did not inhibit proliferation or alter mitochondrial dynamics in normal hPASMC. Drpitor1a regressed monocrotaline-PAH without systemic vascular effects or toxicity. CONCLUSIONS: Drpitor1a is a specific Drp1 GTPase inhibitor that reduces mitochondrial fission in PAH hPASMC and PAH BOEC. Drpitor1a reduces proliferation and induces apoptosis in PAH hPASMC and regresses monocrotaline-PAH. Drp1 is a therapeutic target in PAH, and Drpitor1a is a potential therapy with an interesting therapeutic sexual dimorphism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
