- Abstract
This study aimed to examine associations between gross motor skills and executive functions (EF) in a large sample of Australian preschool-aged children. Of 566 children (mean age = 3.2 ± 0.4 years, 51.2% girls), locomotor, object control, and total skill competence were significantly associated with visual spatial working memory and inhibition (p < 0.05). Total skill competence was associated with shifting and locomotor skills were significantly associated with self-regulation (p < 0.05). Static balance was significantly associated with inhibition and shifting (p < 0.05). In boys, an association between object control skills and visual spatial working memory was observed. In girls, an association between static balance and visual spatial working memory, phonological working memory, and shifting was observed. The identification of significant associations between gross motor skills and different EFs is an important contribution to the growing evidence on the relationship between motor skills and EFs in early childhood.

16. Educator Perceptions of Free-Flowing Routines in Early Childhood Education and Care
- Author

Collins, Tian J., Jones, Rachel A., and Tonge, Karen L.
- Abstract
There is ongoing interest in free-flowing routines in early childhood education and care settings (ECEC), however little is known about educators' perceptions of free-flowing routines. Therefore, the aim of this study was to explore the perceptions of educators regarding free-flowing routines. A focus group and five semi-structured interviews were conducted. Four main themes were identified: learning outcomes, learning opportunities, team characteristics, and pedagogy and practice. Free-flowing routines may offer additional affordances for children's learning compared to structured routines, such as greater independence and agency for children, sustained time to engage in child-led learning, and deeper engagement in learning. Quality pedagogical practice was perceived as being highly important in free-flowing routines. It is recommended that ECEC settings implement an aspect of free-flowing routines for part, or all of the day, and be open to the learning opportunities that this may present for children. With further research, there is potential to better understand routines that best support children's learning and development in ECEC, as well as opportunities to influence national and international policy and curricula.

17. Clothes, Sensory Experiences and Autism: Is Wearing the Right Fabric Important?
- Author

- Abstract
Tactile defensiveness in autistic individuals is the least investigated sensory modality. The current multi-component, explorative study aimed to understand the experiences of ten autistic adults regarding tactile defensiveness and fabrics, using semi-structured, one-to-one interviews. Participants were asked to discuss the effects of seven provided samples of fabrics and were also asked to bring their 'favourite' fabric (s) and express their thoughts about their choices. Using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis and Content Analysis, the findings showed that some fabrics can impact individuals' reported wellbeing. Participants' experiences with several stimuli appeared to have helped them implement coping strategies. By understanding tactile defensiveness, society could move towards increasing autism-friendly approaches with appropriate fabrics. Recommendations for future research, policy and practice are also discussed.

- Abstract
Background: Healthy eating (HE) and physical activity (PA) are essential for children's health and well-being. Innovative approaches, informed by formative research, are crucial to promoting these behaviors. Experiential learning, involving active, hands-on approaches, may be an effective way to encourage healthy behaviors in children. Children's museums could contribute to health education by providing a variety of educational opportunities. Purpose: To inform the design of an experiential learning Healthy Living program for children at an Australian children's museum. Methods: A qualitative study involving focus group discussions with 23 caregivers and in-depth interviews with 6 staff were conducted to explore perceptions of caregivers and staff working in an Australian children's museum (Discovery Space) relating to potentially effective experiential learning strategies for promoting children's healthy behaviors. Data were transcribed verbatim and thematically analyzed in NVivo 12. Results: Key considerations for promoting HE and PA children through experiential learning activities include involving caregivers, engaging children through processes such as providing choice and stimulating curiosity, and selecting appropriate activity types such as simple, engaging, fun, hands-on, sensory play, and music-based activities. Translation to Health Education Practice: Experiential learning activities that address these key considerations can promote HE and PA in children and should be studied in future studies. Competencies and sub-competencies in two areas of responsibility, (I) Assessment of Needs and Capacity and (V) Advocacy, were addressed.

- Abstract
The quality of the preschool environment may affect preschooler's levels of physical activity and sedentary time. In this paper, we aimed to assess the quality of the preschool movement environment and associations between the movement environment and children's physical activity and sedentary time in Norwegian preschools. A sample of 71 departments within 46 preschools provided data on the Movement Environment Rating Scale (MOVERS). 794 children aged 3--5 years provided accelerometer data (ActiGraph GT3X+). Associations were examined using multivariate pattern analysis. Our results indicate that the movement environment is of minimal quality in Norwegian preschools. We found positive associations for light and moderate intensity physical activity and negative associations for sedentary time with the overall MOVERS score, as well as for several items and sub-scales. Our findings suggest that higher quality of the preschool movement environment is associated with more movement and less sedentary time.

BF Psychology - Abstract
Chronically ill children are an often-overlooked subgroup of the school-aged population. There is a small subsection of research that explores caregivers' experiences of engaging with the education system, but little research on children's school experiences, and even less understanding of what might be influencing their experiences. Caregivers and children who are chronically ill often experience the same event but from different positions, and the experience of one often impacts the other. Therefore, this research sought to explore the perceptions of both children and their caregivers in the hope of developing an understanding of what impacts educational experiences. This study used Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) to explore chronically ill children and their caregivers' experiences of the education system. Two families participated in this research, and six semi-structured interviews were conducted, three with chronically ill children, and three interviews with their caregivers. The children were aged 11-16, currently attending an education setting and had received their diagnosis of their chronic illness at least one year ago. All children had an attendance of below 90% which was perceived by caregivers to be a result of their health condition. Using the six steps of IPA (Smith et al., 2009), the transcripts were annotated, analysed, and interpreted. Six superordinate themes were identified for caregivers: (a) Collaborating with school, (b) The perceived impact on the child, (c) School isn't for chronically ill children, (d) Despite everything ..., (e) The emotional impact, and (f) Hopes, fears and the future. For children, five superordinate themes were noted: (a) The adults around the child, (b) The impact on the child, (c) the role of peers, (d) what is helpful?, and (e) Hopes for the future. Both caregivers and children noted three key areas that impacted positively on school experiences: Friendships, key adults in school and the benefits of blended learning. Participants noted systemic processes and a perceived lack of understanding as key factors in negative educational experiences.

- Abstract
Background: Adults with intellectual disabilities have historically been hindered, rather than supported, in their desire to form loving relationships. This paper sought to explore with them what kinds of support they wanted in the 21st Century. Method: Semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with 40 adults with intellectual disabilities in the United Kingdom. Results: Participants placed a high value on having a partner and being supported to maintain and develop a loving relationship. The factors which constrained them in achieving this included a lack of social opportunities, barriers created by social care services and limits on them exercising autonomy. Facilitating factors included access to specialist dating agencies, strong family and staff support and opportunities to learn about relationships. Conclusions: The importance of a loving relationship as a source of pleasure and meaning in the lives of adults with intellectual disabilities who are often disadvantaged in many other spheres of life is emphasised.

- Abstract
The advent of new technologies and increased access to robust connectivity is reshaping the K-12 landscape for teaching and learning. School districts nationwide are leveraging digital instructional materials and resources to deliver transformative and impactful personalized learning opportunities for students and to enhance the administrative coordination of school business. Educators are striving to meet the needs of the modern workforce including the need to develop life-long learners that can adapt to ever changing jobs and careers as technology continues to disrupt the digital age workplace. This report advocates for equitable, reliable, robust broadband access both on and off campus to prepare all students for life and work. This report builds upon SETDA's earlier work, including its groundbreaking Broadband Imperative series of reports and State Broadband K12 Leadership reports. Exemplars highlight states and districts where robust bandwidth has already positively impacted teaching and learning. [For the summary, see ED604818. - Abstract
The State Educational Technology Directors Association (SETDA) and its state member leaders play a pivotal role in driving high-speed broadband access to all students to best prepare them for college and careers. Complementing the 2016 "State K-12 Broadband Leadership: Driving Connectivity and Access" (see ED569341), this publication highlights the importance of state leadership and the various ways states strive to support districts and schools. Students deserve these equitable opportunities both on and off campus. States demonstrate leadership through legislation, initiatives, partnerships, statewide broadband networks, regional networks, and/or statewide purchasing consortia to facilitate reliable, cost-effective internet access for districts. States are also developing strategies to help ensure all students have adequate internet access both on and off campus, whether it is publicizing affordable home internet options; the availability of free internet at community locations; or the ability to provide Wi-Fi on school buses. With state leadership to ensure connectivity and access, districts and schools can achieve their goals for digital learning for all students. No one state has the same policies or practices, yet all states are providing leadership. [Additional funding for this report was provided by Parana River Group (PRG).]

Despite being one of the largest collections of their type in Europe, the Early Bronze Age halberds in Scotland have not been catalogued or analysed since Coles' 1968-9 work. Accordingly, every halberd in Scotland was recorded and catalogued to assess the size and level of preservation of the assemblage. Experimental work using a replica halberd was designed to determine the combat capabilities and limitations of the weapon, and to determine the extent of damage inflicted on the blades during interpersonal combat. Prior to this, experiments using a replica Middle Bronze Age dirk from Friarton, Perthshire were designed to establish the methodology and experimental protocol. During the creation of the experimental protocols, parameters considered included the design and manufacture of the replica, the human tissue analogue used, the layout and audience for the experiment, and the subsequent data analysis. The experimentally derived data on the dirk were compared with extant catalogue data to investigate whether the damage inflicted on the replica blade could be observed on the prehistoric dirks. Following the methodology and experimental protocol refined following the investigations with the replica dirk, the replica halberd experiments were then undertaken, first using SynboneTM as a skeletal tissue proxy, and secondly a pig carcass as a soft tissue proxy. The damage to the replica halberd blades observed following the experiments was analysed and compared to the newly-catalogued prehistoric halberd assemblage An interpretative model synthesising all the halberd data was then derived as one possible interpretation as to the uses and distribution of the halberds; the halberds were shown experimentally to be functional combat weapons, able to be used effectively with no great amount of training or mobility, and the mending and conservation evidence in the prehistoric assemblage is hypothesised to be linked to their role as combat and political power proxies in long-distance communication networks across northern Europe.

- Abstract
The clinical heterogeneity of autism spectrum disorders majorly challenges their genetic study. Autism spectrum disorders symptoms occur in milder forms in the general population, as autistic-like traits, and share genetic factors with autism spectrum disorders. Here, we investigate the genetics of individual autistic-like traits to improve our understanding of autism spectrum disorders. We meta-analysed four population-based genome-wide association studies investigating four autistic-like traits -- 'attention-to-detail', 'imagination', 'rigidity' and 'social-skills' (n = 4600). Using autism spectrum disorder summary statistics from the Psychiatric Genomic Consortium (N = 46,350), we applied polygenic risk score analyses to understand the genetic relationship between autism spectrum disorders and autistic-like traits. Using MAGMA, we performed gene-based and gene co-expression network analyses to delineate involved genes and pathways. We identified two novel genome-wide significant loci -- rs6125844 and rs3731197 -- associated with 'attention-to-detail'. We demonstrated shared genetic aetiology between autism spectrum disorders and 'rigidity'. Analysing top variants and genes, we demonstrated a role of the immune-related genes "RNF114," "CDKN2A," "KAZN," "SPATA2" and "ZNF816A" in autistic-like traits. Brain-based genetic expression analyses further linked autistic-like traits to genes involved in immune functioning, and neuronal and synaptic signalling. Overall, our findings highlight the potential of the autistic-like trait-based approach to address the challenges of genetic research in autism spectrum disorders. We provide novel insights showing a potential role of the immune system in specific autism spectrum disorder dimensions.

- Abstract
State education leaders are committed to providing leadership to ensure that all students have access to personalized, engaging learning experiences supported by digital instructional materials and resources. With the transformation to digital learning, more and more states are enacting policies and guidelines to support the implementation and utilization of digital instructional materials, applications and resources. This publication highlights how state policies and guidance are supporting the transformation to digital learning, specifically the policies and processes around the selection, curation, procurement and funding of digital instructional materials. Evidence of state leadership in these areas--equity of access; accessibility for all students; interoperability; and student data and privacy--is highlighted throughout this publication. One will also find specific examples of state policies and guidance and district exemplars highlighting how state policies facilitated the use of digital instructional materials in the classroom to personalize learning. Findings suggest that the number of states with guidance and policies supporting the use of digital instructional materials continues to increase each year. This trend reflects the overall shift towards the implementation of digital instructional materials and the opportunity for educators to use digital applications and resources to support student learning.

Background: There is a lack of evidence regarding 24-hour movement behaviors of young children from low- and middle-income countries. This study examined Mongolian preschoolers' adherence to the World Health Organization's guidelines for physical activity, sedentary behavior, and sleep; their associations with health indicators, and the feasibility of the SUNRISE International study in Mongolia. Methods: Preschool-aged children were recruited from 5 kindergartens in urban and rural areas of Ulaanbaatar city and Tuv province in Mongolia. Physical activity and sedentary behavior were measured by an ActiGraph accelerometer worn for 5 consecutive days. Screen time and sleep were reported by parents. The National Institute of Health and Early Years Toolboxes were used to assess motor skills and executive function, respectively. Results: One hundred and one children participated in the study (mean age = 4.82 y, boys = 58), with 88% (n = 89) having complete data for analysis. The proportion of children who met the recommendations for physical activity, sedentary screen time, and sleep was 61%, 23%, and 82%, respectively. Only 7% met all recommendations. Meeting the sleep recommendation individually (P =.032) and in combination with the physical activity recommendation was associated with better gross (P =.019) and fine (P =.042) motor skills. Spending more time in physical activity was positively correlated with motor development. Results confirmed that the SUNRISE study protocol was feasible, age-appropriate, and enjoyable for children. Conclusions: The results of the SUNRISE pilot study will help inform the SUNRISE Mongolia main study and lay the groundwork for future research into children's 24-hour movement behaviors in Mongolia.
