With the increasing demand for modern high‐voltage electronic devices in electric vehicles and renewable‐energy systems, power semiconductor devices with high breakdown fields are becoming essential. β‐Gallium oxide (Ga2O3), which has a theoretical breakdown field of 8 MV cm−1, is being studied as a next‐generation power‐switch material. However, realizing a breakdown field close to this theoretical value remains challenging. In this study, an aerosol deposition‐manufactured Ga2O3 film boasting an extremely high breakdown field, achieved through thickness optimization, heat treatment, and a unique nozzle‐tilting method, is developed. This study explores the effect of oxygen vacancies on the dielectric constant, breakdown field, and microstructure of Ga2O3 films. Through these methods, Ga2O3 films with a denser (98.88%) and uniform surface, made less affected by oxygen vacancies through nozzle tilting and post‐annealing at 800 °C, are produced, resulting in appropriate dielectric constants (9.3 at 10 kHz), low leakage currents (5.8 × 10−11 A cm−2 at 20 kV cm−1), and a very high breakdown field of 5.5 MV cm−1. The results of this study suggest that aerosol‐deposited Ga2O3 layers have great potential to enable power switches with reliable switching.

Noise-vocoded speech has long been used to investigate how acoustic cues affect speech understanding. Studies indicate that reducing the number of spectral channel bands diminishes speech intelligibility. Despite previous studies examining the channel band effect using earlier event-related potential (ERP) components, such as P1, N1, and P2, a clear consensus or understanding remains elusive. Given our hypothesis that spectral degradation affects higher-order processing of speech understanding beyond mere perception, we aimed to objectively measure differences in higher-order abilities to discriminate or interpret meaning. Using an oddball paradigm with speech stimuli, we examined how neural signals correlate with the evaluation of speech stimuli based on the number of channel bands measuring N2 and P3b components. In 20 young participants with normal hearing, we measured speech intelligibility and N2 and P3b responses using a one-syllable task paradigm with animal and non-animal stimuli across four vocoder conditions with 4, 8, 16, or 32 channel bands. Abstract Lithium (Li) is the “holy grail” for satisfying the increasing energy demand. This is because of its high theoretical capacity and low potential. Although Li is considered as a potential anode material, dendritic Li growth and the limited electrochemical properties continue to hinder its practical application. Structure‐based self lithium ion (Li+) concentrating electrodes with high capacity and uniform Li+‐flux are recommended to overcome these shortcomings of Li. However, recent studies have been limited to structural perspectives. In addition, the electrokinetic principle of electrode materials remains a challenge. Herein, the space‐confinement‐based strategy is suggested for condensed Li+‐flux control in nanoscaled slit spaces that induce the dense Li growth on an anodeless electrode by using the stratified carbon pack (SCP). The micro/mesoporous slits of the SCP concentrate the electric field, which is strengthened by the space‐confined electric field focusing, resulting in the accumulation of Li+‐flux in the host. The accumulated Li+ in host sites enables a uniform Li deposition with high capacity at high current density stably. Furthermore, SCPs have great compatibility with LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 (NCM811) cathode, representing the outstanding full cell performance with Li deposited electrode which show the high specific of 115 mAh g−1 at 4 C during 350 cycles.

Tet methylcytosine dioxygenase 2 (TET2) is one of the most frequently mutated genes in myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). TET2 is known to involve a demethylation process, and the loss of TET2 is thought to cause DNA hypermethylation. Loss of TET2 function is known to be caused by genetic mutations and miRNA, such as miR-22. We analyzed 41 MDS patients receiving hypomethylating therapy (HMT) to assess whether TET2 mutation status and miR-22 expression status were associated with their clinical characteristics and treatment outcomes. Responsiveness to HMT was not affected by both TET2 mutation (odds ratio (OR) 0.900, p = 0.909) and high miR-22 expression (OR 1.548, p = 0.631). There was a tendency for TET2 mutation to be associated with lower-risk disease based on IPSS (Gamma = −0.674, p = 0.073), lower leukemic transformation (OR 0.170, p = 0.040) and longer survival (Hazard ratio 0.354, p = 0.059). Although high miR-22 expression also showed a similar tendency, this tendency was weaker than that of TET2 mutation. In summary, the loss of TET2 function, including both TET2 mutation and high miR-22 expression, was not a good biomarker for predicting the response to HMT but may be associated with lower-risk disease based on IPSS, lower leukemic transformation and longer survival.

In this multicenter phase II study, we evaluated the safety and efficacy of imatinib in patients with steroid-resistant chronic graft-versus-host disease (cGVHD) and evaluated the quality of life (QOL) of the enrolled patients using the Short Form 36 (SF-36) health survey questionnaire. Thirty-six patients who were diagnosed with steroid-refractory cGVHD and treated with imatinib between March 2013 and February 2019 received 100 mg/day of imatinib for 2 weeks. Depending on the patient’s condition and investigator’s decision, the imatinib dose was allowed to be increased by 100 mg every 2 weeks up to 400 mg/day. Patients who achieved stable disease (SD), partial remission (PR), and complete remission (CR) at 3-month response evaluations continued imatinib for up to 6 months. The majority of the patients had multi-organ cGVHD, with skin (63.9%), lungs (44.4%), mouth (38.9%), and eyes (38.9%) as the most common sites. The overall response rate was 58.3%, including 3 and 18 patients with CR and PR, respectively, and an overall decline in National Institutes of Health (NIH) severity scores was observed at study completion in the absence of significant adverse effects. The overall response rates were 70.5%, 66.7%, 34.8%, and 25% in patients with gastrointestinal, liver, skin, and lung cGVHD, respectively. Factors representing emotional well-being were significantly improved based on the patient-reported QOL evaluation using SF-36. The effect of imatinib on steroid tapering, which was notable in responders, was also present in 50% of those who achieved SD without worsening cGVHD. Imatinib exhibited therapeutic efficacy in steroid-refractory and steroid-dependent cGVHD with tolerable toxicity. Clinical Trial Registration: KCT0006785.

Background/Aims Immune reconstitution following allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is affected by multiple variables during the transplantation. Methods We assessed the clinical factors contributing to immune function reconstitution at 100 days post-allogeneic HSCT in 114 patients receiving fludarabine-based conditioning. Immunophenotypic analysis using flow cytometry was performed to evaluate the percentage and the absolute numbers of T-cell subsets, natural killer cells, and B-cells as clinical outcomes. Results Tacrolimus-based graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) prophylaxis, T-cell depletion, and acute GVHD were significantly associated with delayed immune reconstitution of T-cell subsets. The incidence of chronic GVHD was significantly increased in the normal recovery group compared to the abnormal group (p = 0.01). Epstein-Barr virus reactivation was more frequently observed in the abnormal group of T-cell subsets (p = 0.045). All viral reactivation events including cytomegalovirus reactivation appeared to be more frequent in the abnormal group of T-cell subsets. Conclusions The immune recovery status post-allogeneic HSCT was affected by GVHD prophylactic regimens, especially in cases receiving tacrolimus-based GVHD prophylaxis, T-cell depletion, and possibly those manifesting acute GVHD. Delayed immune reconstitution might increase the morbidity due to viral reactivation. Treatment strategies are needed to prevent infectious complications and enhance immune reconstitution based on the immune recovery status following allogeneic HSCT with fludarabine-based conditioning.

In this study, a simple method for quantifying the porous nature based on the permeability of the thin ceramic coating on microporous polyolefin flims used as separators in lithium-ion batteries is demonstrated. The air permeability of the ceramic coating was determined via the ideal laminate theory (ILT), which is widely accepted for multilayered films or well-defined laminates. This study mainly aims at introducing an ILT-based resistors-in-series model with the Gurley method and its potential applications in battery separators. We investigated a few previously reported examples of ceramic-coated separators to compare the air permeability of various ceramic coatings along with their base polyolefin films.

Abstract Background The response rate and survival improvement for rituximab, a CD20-targeting monoclonal antibody, have been demonstrated in marginal zone lymphoma (MZL) as monotherapy and in combination with chemotherapeutic regimens, yet relapses still occur despite treatment completion. Thus, extending the period of remission in MZL patients remains an essential goal. This multicenter, single-arm, open-label phase II study evaluated the survival efficacy of 2 years of rituximab-maintenance therapy in patients with stage III–IV CD20-positive MZL who had responded to first-line R–CVP (rituximab, cyclophosphamide, vincristine, and prednisolone). The objective of this study was to determine whether rituximab maintenance following R–CVP warrants further investigation. Methods Prior to rituximab-maintenance therapy, patients received 6–8 cycles of first-line R–CVP therapy for stage III–IV MZL. Rituximab (375 mg/m2), cyclophosphamide (750 mg/m2), and vincristine (1.4 mg/m2; maximum 2 mg) were administered via an intravenous infusion on day 1 of each 3-week cycle, while oral prednisolone (100 mg) was given on days 1–5 of each 3-week cycle. The patients who achieved complete response (CR), partial response (PR), or stable disease (SD) to R–CVP treatment, were prescribed rituximab-maintenance therapy which was administered intravenously at a dose of 375 mg/m2 every 8 weeks for up to 12 cycles. The primary endpoint was progression-free survival (PFS). Secondary endpoints were overall survival (OS) and treatment safety. Results 47 patients were enrolled, of whom, 45 (96%) received rituximab-maintenance treatment. Fifteen (33%) patients had nodal MZL. Following R–CVP first-line therapy, 20 (44%), 22 (49%), and 3 (7%) patients achieved CR, PR, and SD, respectively. After a median follow-up of 38.2 months, their observed 3-year PFS rate was 81%. During the rituximab-maintenance, 6 PR and 1 SD patients achieved CR following the administration of R–CVP. Elevated LDH and the presence of B symptoms were found to be significant prognostic factors for PFS (P = 0.003) and demonstrated a 3-year OS rate of 90%. Rituximab-maintenance therapy was well tolerated, and the common treatment-emergent adverse events were sensory neuropathy (18%), myalgia (13%), fatigue (9%), and neutropenia (9%). Conclusion Rituximab-maintenance therapy following first-line R–CVP demonstrated good PFS in patients with stage III–IV MZL, in addition to a favorable toxicity profile. Abstract In this research, a cable-type wall system that could replace the conventional aluminum curtain wall system for reinforced concrete high-rise buildings is proposed. The cable-type wall system is a newly developed system, which could be used as an existing exterior skin system, and can effectively support the wind load acting on the exterior of the high-rise buildings by the pre-induced initial tension force to the cable supporting the glass. The main advantages of the cable-type wall system are that the expense of construction could be reduced due to the simplicity of the construction. The experiment of structural analysis and air/water tightness was performed to evaluate its feasibility of industrialization. The structural performance of the cable-type wall system was evaluated through the structural analysis and the full-scale experiment to predict the initial pre-tension force and the design load displacement of the vertical one-way cable-type wall system that can be used for a typical floor of the high-rise building. The initial pre-tension force and structural behavior of the cable were analyzed by using the structural design program MIDAS-Gen. The maximum deformation value in the structural test was found to satisfy the AAMA condition, which is equal to the size of the facade skin system. The air/water tightness test was conducted to verify the performance. Test results show that the cable-type wall system satisfies the air/water tightness performance standards ASTM E283, E331 and AAMA 501.1-05 which are the most basic standards that the facade system must provide. As a result of this study, it is expected that the proposed cable-type wall system could be used for facade system, not only the structural performance but also air/water tightness performance are secured.

Spectral ripple discrimination (SRD) has been widely used to evaluate the spectral resolution in cochlear implant (CI) recipients based on its strong correlation with speech perception performance. However, despite its usefulness for predicting speech perception outcomes, SRD performance exhibits large across-subject variabilities even among subjects implanted with the same CIs and sound processors. The potential factors of this observation include current spread, nerve survival, and CI mapping. Previous studies have found that the spectral resolution reduces with increasing distance of the stimulation electrode from the auditory nerve fibers (ANFs), attributable to increasing current spread. However, it remains unclear whether the spread of excitation is the only cause of the observation, or whether other factors such as temporal interaction also contribute to it. In this study, we used a computational model to investigate channel interaction upon non-simultaneous stimulation with respect to the electrode-ANF distance, and evaluated the SRD performance for five electrode-ANF distances. The SRD performance was determined based on the similarity between two neurograms in response to standard and inverted stimuli and used to evaluate the spectral resolution in the computational model. The spread of excitation was observed to increase with increasing electrode-ANF distance, consistent with previous findings. Additionally, the preceding pulses delivered from neighboring channels induced a channel interaction that either inhibited or facilitated the neural responses to subsequent pulses depending on the electrode-ANF distance. The SRD performance was also found to decrease with increasing electrode-ANF distance. The findings of this study suggest that variation of the neural responses (inhibition or facilitation) with the electrode-ANF distance in CI users may cause spectral smearing, and hence poor spectral resolution. A computational model such as that used in this study is a useful tool for understanding the neural factors related to CI outcomes, such as cannot be accomplished by behavioral studies alone.

We evaluated whether blind subjects have advantages in auditory spectral resolution, temporal resolution, and speech perception in noise compared with sighted subjects. We also compared psychoacoustic performance between early blind (EB) subjects and late blind (LB) subjects. Nineteen EB subjects, 16 LB subjects, and 20 sighted individuals were enrolled. All subjects were right-handed with normal and symmetric hearing thresholds and without cognitive impairments. Three psychoacoustic measurements of the subjects’ right ears were performed via an inserted earphone to determine spectral-ripple discrimination (SRD), temporal modulation detection (TMD), and speech recognition threshold (SRT) in noisy conditions. Acoustic change complex (ACC) responses were recorded during passive listening to standard ripple-inverted ripple stimuli. EB subjects exhibited better SRD than did LB (p = 0.020) and sighted (p = 0.003) subjects. TMD was better in EB (p < 0.001) and LB (p = 0.007) subjects compared with sighted subjects. SRD was positively correlated with the duration of blindness (r = 0.386, p = 0.024). Acoustic change complex data for ripple noise change at the Cz and Fz electrodes showed trends toward significant correlations with the behavioral results. In conclusion, compared with sighted subjects, EB subjects showed advantages in terms of auditory spectral and temporal resolution, while LB subjects showed an advantage in temporal resolution exclusively. These findings suggest that it might take longer for auditory spectral resolution to functionally enhance following visual deprivation compared to temporal resolution. Alternatively, a critical period of very young age may be required for auditory spectral resolution to improve following visual deprivation.

Rechargeable lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have emerged as a key technology to meet the demand for electric vehicles, energy storage systems, and portable electronics. In LIBs, a permeable porous membrane (separator) is an essential component located between positive and negative electrodes to prevent physical contact between the two electrodes and transfer lithium ions. Among several types, microporous polyolefin membranes have dominated the commercial separator market for LIBs operated with liquid electrolytes, favored for their chemical and electrochemical stability, high mechanical strength, uniform pore size, and inexpensive manufacturing and materials cost. In this review, we summarize the principles and theoretical background underlying conventional manufacturing processes and newly emerging microporous polyolefin separators. Based on their mechanical and physical properties, as collected from the literature, we introduce a number of processing type-dependent characteristics and universal correlations among their properties. This will provide a macroscopic view on the subject and a guideline for the development of next-generation separators.

ABSTRACT Purpose The aim of this study was to evaluate the individual change of International prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) and Overactive Bladder Symptom Score (OABSS) in each patient by temperature conditions. Materials and Methods The severity of lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) was explored using the IPSS and OABSS questionnaires that were completed by 2.486 subjects (923 males and 1.563 females) aged 60 years and older. Korea Meteorological Administration data was used to determine daily average temperature and daily temperature difference on the interview dates at each site. Results The mean IPSS and mean age for males was 13.45±8.24 and 75.03±6.20 years, respectively. The mean OABSS and mean age for females was 4.41±3.10 and 73.74±6.03years, respectively. Previous studies have shown that concurrent vowel identification improves with increasing temporal onset asynchrony of the vowels, even if the vowels have the same fundamental frequency. The current study investigated the possible underlying neural processing involved in concurrent vowel perception. The individual vowel stimuli from a previously published study were used as inputs for a phenomenological auditory-nerve (AN) model. Spectrotemporal representations of simulated neural excitation patterns were constructed (i.e., neurograms) and then matched quantitatively with the neurograms of the single vowels using the Neurogram Similarity Index Measure (NSIM). A novel computational decision model was used to predict concurrent vowel identification. To facilitate optimum matches between the model predictions and the behavioral human data, internal noise was added at either neurogram generation or neurogram matching using the NSIM procedure. The best fit to the behavioral data was achieved with a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of 8 dB for internal noise added at the neurogram but with a much smaller amount of internal noise (SNR of 60 dB) for internal noise added at the level of the NSIM computations. The results suggest that accurate modeling of concurrent vowel data from listeners with normal hearing may partly depend on internal noise and where internal noise is hypothesized to occur during the concurrent vowel identification process.

Spectrotemporal modulation (STM) detection performance was examined for cochlear implant (CI) users. The test involved discriminating between an unmodulated steady noise and a modulated stimulus. The modulated stimulus presents frequency modulation patterns that change in frequency over time. In order to examine STM detection performance for different modulation conditions, two different temporal modulation rates (5 and 10 Hz) and three different spectral modulation densities (0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 cycles/octave) were employed, producing a total 6 different STM stimulus conditions. In order to explore how electric hearing constrains STM sensitivity for CI users differently from acoustic hearing, normal-hearing (NH) and hearing-impaired (HI) listeners were also tested on the same tasks. STM detection performance was best in NH subjects, followed by HI subjects. On average, CI subjects showed poorest performance, but some CI subjects showed high levels of STM detection performance that was comparable to acoustic hearing. Significant correlations were found between STM detection performance and speech identification performance in quiet and in noise. In order to understand the relative contribution of spectral and temporal modulation cues to speech perception abilities for CI users, spectral and temporal modulation detection was performed separately and related to STM detection and speech perception performance. The results suggest that that slow spectral modulation rather than slow temporal modulation may be important for determining speech perception capabilities for CI users. Lastly, test-retest reliability for STM detection was good with no learning. The present study demonstrates that STM detection may be a useful tool to evaluate the ability of CI sound processing strategies to deliver clinically pertinent acoustic modulation information.

Bladder outlet obstruction (BOO) caused by collagen deposit is one of the most common problems in elderly males. The present study is to investigate if human mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are capable of inhibiting collagen deposition and improve cystometric parameters in bladder outlet obstruction in rats. Human MSCs were labeled with nanoparticles containing superparamagnetic iron oxide (SPION), and transplanted in rat BOO lesion site. Forty 6-week-old female Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into four groups (group 1: control, group 2: sham operation, group 3: BOO, and group 4: BOO rats receiving SPION-hMSCs). Two weeks after the onset of BOO, 1 × 10 6 SPION-hMSCs were injected into the bladder wall. Serial T2-weighted MR images were taken immediately after transplantation of SPION-labeled human MSCs and at 4 weeks posttransplantation. T2-weighted MR images showed a clear hypointense signal induced by the SPION-labeled MSCs. While the expression of collagen and TGF-β protein increased after BOO, the expression of both returned to the original levels after MSC transplantation. Expression of HGF and c-met protein also increased in the group with MSC transplantation. Maximal voiding pressure and residual urine volume increased after BOO but they recovered after MSC transplantation. Human MSCs transplanted in rat BOO models inhibited the bladder fibrosis and mediated recovery of bladder dysfunction. Transplantation of MSC-based cell therapy could be a novel therapeutic strategy against bladder fibrosis in patients with bladder outlet obstruction.

Background Since it was suggested that B cells play a role in the pathogenesis of chronic graft-versus-host disease, rituximab, an anti-CD20 monoclonal antibody targeting B cells, has been shown to be effective in steroid-refractory, chronic graft-versus-host disease. However, most of the data were from small numbers of patients or retrospective analyses. We, therefore, conducted a multicenter phase II study to confirm the efficacy of this treatment strategy that targets B cells.Design and Methods We diagnosed and evaluated chronic graft-versus-host disease according to the National Institute of Health criteria for clinical trials on this condition. The treatment consisted of weekly intravenous infusions of rituximab for 4 weeks followed by monthly rituximab for 4 months. We evaluated the patients’ responses and monitored their disease activity until their final visit, which was on day 365. We also assessed the patients’ subsequent quality of life and serum levels of B-cell-activating factor of the tumor necrosis factor family.Results Among 37 patients enrolled (median age, 29 years; range 8–57 years), 32 patients responded to rituximab with 8 complete and 24 partial responses. Twenty-one patients maintained their response for 1 year, so their steroid treatment was discontinued or its dose reduced (21/37, or 56.8%), and their scores representing quality of life were improved although these changes were not statistically significant. The responses were better for clinical manifestations of the skin, oral cavity and musculoskeletal system (response rate, 71.4–100%) than for other organs. However, infectious complications and primary disease relapse accounted for the majority of treatment failure. The pre-treatment serum level of B cell-activating factor of the tumor necrosis factor family was not associated with better treatment outcome (P=0.147).Conclusions Rituximab could improve clinical responses and quality of life of patients with steroid-refractory chronic graft-versus-host disease, although such patients may need active prophylaxis against infection.

Educating primary care physicians about blood donation and transfusion is critical. The Division of Hematology and Oncology at Soonchunhyang University Seoul Hospital in Korea introduced an on-site educational program termed the Blood Donation Center Visiting Program in the clerkship education for final-year medical students. We evaluated the educational outcomes and changes in perception among medical students after the Blood Donation Center Visiting Program based on a survey. The program was implemented from 2021 to 2023. As part of the program, students visited a blood donation center each week, one group at a time. They gained practical knowledge about the blood donation process, and some students actively participated in blood donation. After the program, 287 students were eligible for an online survey of the program, of whom 203 participated in the survey. Among the 203 students, 126 (62.1%) donated blood during their visit to the blood donation center as part of the program, and 88.7% of the students reported an increase (from 71.4% to 90.1%) in their knowledge and willingness to donate blood. The onsite educational Blood Donation Center Visiting Program appears to have generated positive changes in perceptions among students and enhanced their knowledge about blood donation. Purpose: The role of allogeneic stem cell transplantation (alloSCT) in multiple myeloma (MM) treatment remains controversial. We conducted a retrospective, multicenter, nationwide study in Korea to evaluate the outcomes of alloSCT in Asian patients with MM. Materials and Methods: Overall, 109 patients with MM who underwent alloSCT between 2003 and 2020 were included in this study. Data were collected from the Korean Multiple Myeloma Working Party Registry. Results: The overall response rate and stringent complete response plus complete response (CR) rates were 67.0 and 46.8%, respectively, after alloSCT. At a median follow-up of 32.5 months, the 3-year probability of progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) rates were 69.3% and 71.8%, respectively. The 3-year probabilities of OS rates in the upfront alloSCT, tandem auto-alloSCT, and later alloSCT groups were 75.0%, 88.9%, and 61.1%, respectively. Patients who achieved CR before or after alloSCT had significantly longer OS (89.8 vs. 18 months and 89.8 vs. 15.2 months, respectively). Even though patients who did not achieve CR prior to alloSCT, those who achieve CR after alloSCT had improved PFS and OS compared to those who had no achievement of CR both prior and after alloSCT. Patients who underwent alloSCT with 1-2 prior treatment lines had improved PFS (22.4 vs. 4.5 months) and OS (45.6 vs. 15.3 months) compared to those with three or more prior treatment lines. Conclusion AlloSCT may be a promising therapeutic option especially for younger, chemosensitive patients with earlier implementation from relapse. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
